Quick Info
Current Location: Anywhere from my series. (Just ask and I will be more than happy to tell you!)
Available for interaction, asks, and role play!
Hello and welcome to my interaction blog! This is primarily featuring my book series that I will be making that I plan on getting published and turning into an animation series in the future!
Yes, there will be angst, drama, horror, romance, adventure, action, comfort, heartbreak, and fantasy. Just a warning but there will be blood and some medical procedures, however, I will not go into extreme detail as they did in the movie Saw, so don't be afraid to interact!
🌌🐉🌌🐉🌌
RULES
Any anon is allowed! Just, please nothing nasty or disgusting! Of course, Angst and fight scenes, as well as horror is allowed!
Absolutely no NSFW in asks, an interaction, or in role-play, the farthest I will go is critical injuries, wounds but no extreme gore, a character bringing a child into the world but will not be too descriptive, and mental health issues and trauma.
You may send or tag me in role-play starters.
Please try to refrain from sending spam.
Once I start making pixel art, reblogs are greatly appreciated.
Please refrain from tagging me in any art or stories of a highly suggestive nature, save for what is listed above. It makes me very uncomfortable.
Please be patient! I am only one person who is in college and with real life problems. I am mostly doing this for fun and to spread the word of my series.
🌌🐉🌌🐉🌌
CONTENT WARNINGS
Yes, I mostly intend for this blog to be fun and interactive, I do want to explore some topics that are darker than usual so, please keep these in mind!
Body horror, scars, descriptions of panic attacks/meltdowns, use of caps, blood, violence, mild to moderate to severe body horror, war (via my character's flashbacks and experiences and possible plot points), possible self-harm, suicidal thoughts, implied gore, implied death, implied cannibalism, these next few will have a warning just in case, on-screen gore, on-screen death, on-screen cannibalism.
I will probably make a lot of out-of-character posts as I have a lot of ideas and thoughts! I will label them accordingly in case no one wants to see them.
🐉🌌🐉🌌

One last thought before I take this test:
My Ghostface is similar to Reaper from Overwatch: he can turn into a mist-like substance and can hold a physical form!
The Entity replaced his cells with auric cells to grant him these types of power, and since the realm is so full of fog 24/7… that’s why he can do that :>>
When he does take off his mask, the only thing you can see are his teeth; clear white, with sharp canines that have gore on them when he wants to spook the survivors lol

Note
have 2, 17, 28, and a free space from the gw2 asks! :D (i feel like i've missed a couple instances of you reblogging ask games recently, though i could be making that up alsjkdfadf, but i caught this one! xD) @kerra-and-company
Oooooh! These call for pics and long answers 😁
Thanks so much for these! 🥰
2. fave profession :
I got to say Guardian because I have a long history of playing paladins and valiant knights on several games (*cough* 12 years of WOW *cough* ) and I absolutely adore Anwen but, I've been playing a lot on my Necro lately and Æthnen has become my first character to go to if I want to chill, do map exploration or even meta events. I play him as a Reaper but rarely use the greatsword 😅 I feel like Trahearne would not have gone anywhere this kind of weapons of not for Caladbolg 😅 and since, for now, it's Anwen who weilds it...🌹
17. Your glider? (if you don’t have one, the one you want the most)
I got a few actually ^^' Elianora, both Anwens, Æthnen and Galaëd all have their own, personal glider that I wouldn't use on any other character no matter how much I love the skins, they're theirs!
Eli shifts between the Fox Spirit Glider, which fits her personality and is a little nod to her mini (you guessed! a fox!) and the Elemental Fury Glider.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anwen Evergreen has the Crystalline Dragon Wings since (at least - jury’s still out regarding Anwen’s becoming as a dragon champion) Aurene's ascension.
Tumblr media
Her elementalist counterpart, Anwen Swynwr has the Spellforged Glider (that her Guardian-self had before she used the crystalline wings)
Tumblr media
Galaëd has the Lunar backpack and assorted glider! The funny part is, for other characters I chose the glider based on their story / personality. For Galaëd it was the other way ‘round. I got the Lunar backpack in a Black Lion chest, so I decided he loved fireflies and stars. From there @lilypixy pointed the connection with the Moon Shield, Canach being its current bearer, and bam! Two sylvari who thought they had found what the dream had showed them only to have their whole perspective shifted (Galaëd with the Green Knight, Canach with the Moon Shield).
Tumblr media
And last but not least, Æthnen (aka my Trahearne clone for the two in the back 😁) has been very much nurtured back to health by the Exalted after the campaign of Maguuma, and as such he has the Exalted Glider (complete with Luminate’s Backplate Exalted Shoulders and Auric Weapons)
Tumblr media
Avalwyn (my other Trahearne clone, yup I got two of them, don’t rub me the wrong way or I’ll show you my third! 😅) aka Druid!Hearne also has the Fox Spirit one, as a little nod to his Fernhound Caliborn.
Tumblr media
28. What is your favorite legendary weapon?
I loved collecting stuff for Kudzu! I still have to upgrade the precursor to its actual Legendary form but I had a great time collecting the seeds for it! It tingled my herbalist sense nicely and fitted quite well in Anwen's themes and story!
And of course, since I'm an eenie-meanie I just have to collect Mordremoth's weapons for Æthnen ! I'll probably go with the staff but if @lilypixy 's conjecture is right and next Necro elite spec has the hammer as its weapon I will full on embrace it and give Trahearne a very nice not at all corrupted by any dragon what are you on about hammer!
Tumblr media
Let Trahearne smash things with a hammer! He deserves it!
Tumblr media
Mordremoth, dead, somewhere in the Mists, with its siblings : I gave my Champion my weapons! Look how stylish he is!
Kralk, being the only lucid one in their brood, probably : Fucked up a perfectly good scion is what you did! Look at him, he’s got anxiety!
Tumblr media
Edit : I forgot the free space! I used a random number generator and got 37, so...
37. Your favorite HoT event?
I have to say the Octovine! Yeah of course it's extremely infuriating when you get slackers and auto attackers but if run right it's so very satisfying! The loot is sweet and even the 'Event failed' cutscene is heartbreaking!
Apart from that I would say the first event from the Pale Reavers outpost, in Verdant Brink! That was the moment I truly felt the weight of the mantle of Commander (and I loved it 😅🤣), when you make a stand atop that cliff with the wreckage of the fleet still burning on the horizon and the mordrem swarming below — especially when Laranthir's so relieved and happy to see you!

have 2, 20, 31, and 37 from the gw2 asks! :D @kerra-and-company
Tumblr media
Have Yasu for the picture, @kerra-and-company!!! I'm really sorry for the spacing on this one. It did something weird with what I had saved on notepad vs transferring it to tumblr.
02] Fave profession?
I have…made my way down the line in the light armors to be honest??? I started out a die-hard elementalist fan, especially core game. I had a WP build that was really amazing with the toughness, crit bleeds, and all around condi damage. Had to wrangle it a little bit when we got the trait line update, losing a line and whatnot… Never got into the Elites—until I gave Weaver a shot but by that point…
I kinda fell into Necromancer hell?? Granted, the class was already one of my most numerous in my line up. But then Reaper got thrown into the mix with…I think another WP build? So I pretty much exclusively played with Reaper!Necromancer once I had it unlocked. Which took a while… Raiden was my main and still is for things I'm unsure of or know that I need a reliably livable character. He's got 30k health right now.
But. Hilariously. I think my current favorite class is Mesmer, specifically the Virtuosso Elite. I still can't really stand the class straight as it is, my brain just can't fathom the clones I guess. Which is hilarious considering I'm a Gemini, you'd think I'd like having multiple faces that go boom. So yeah. Mesmer!
20] Your favorite map?
Core map favorite would have to be…Queensdale. Boring, I know, but I know the map pretty darn well. I have fond memories of events that no longer happen—or at least ones that no longer trigger the way I remember them. There's a bunch of fond memories on that map for me.
With the introduction of Living Story, HoT/PoF/EoD…Dragonfall. I hate the verticality of the map but I really do love the variety that you see in that map. I love the meta event for the map as well.
31] Your favorite character from personal story?
Personal story I'm going to take as Core story. Because there's too many amazing faces in the expansions and everything. Laranthir is absolutely a favorite, a favorite high up on that list. He always makes me happy when he shows up in story, even though it's not a lot in Core unless you choose Vigil. I have a lot of mainstream favorites, really. So if I have to choose one that's not…Tonn and Ceera. I love their story, as heartbreaking as it is. But they're good beans.
37] Your favorite HoT event?
I don't really have a favorite??? I don't really frequent the events in the HoT maps as much as I should, probably. I can't really think of any that stand out, either. Most events I do anymore tend to follow HP trains. The skritt events in Auric Basin aren't absolutely terrible and I do enjoy following them around. And the metas in any of the HoT maps are a good time, if long.

Conversation
🐇 Unconscious Transcendentals
Uranus in the 8th: The magician plays hopscotch through this auric field, appearing and disappearing, invited or intruded, a playful ghost is fine but a weeping and demanding ghost is rather not
Neptune in the 8th: The scent of death always lingers close by, tempting the person with seductive elusions, they can make lovers mad with their sexual ceremony, the Grim Reaper answers and offers to show a hallucinatory heaven
Pluto in the 8th: The person is infused, attached to the rituals that are regulated from the unconscious, what may seem from the outside to be pointless or nonsensical actions is the magic ceremony that natural instinct and intuition commands them to perform everyday

The Guild Wars 2 Screenshot Master Post
Originally wrote this (the location list specifically) as a beefy Reddit comment cause I was bored. Bringing it to Tumblr for the benefit of the community here, with some bonus tips on how to take better screenshots! I am writing this as I spend two weeks away from my PC/GW2, so I could be missing things.
Taking Screenshots
If your PC can handle it, GW2 Hook/ReShade is always a boon, but it's by no means required. I use a preset called "oh shiny" that makes blacks darker, whites pop out more, edges sharper, and colors generally more vibrant. It's like GW2 Remastered - highly recommend it, but you might get addicted.
Shaders or not, lighting is a pretty crucial thing. Use the natural light, usually sunlight, to show off all the details of the outfit or armor. An inky mass or blinding glowy orb is not always that appealing. But I'll save the rant about Permafrost and Shadow Abyss, which only make the problem worse, for later. Night in GW2 is pretty lackluster in most places for screenshots, unless you are showing off things that glow in the dark, in which case IMO you're much more limited as to the places that will look best. For instance, the Grove and parts of Maguuma typically look nice at night.
Camera positioning tips:
You usually want to keep your FoV on the low side. Vary your pics between full-body, waist-up, etc.
Play around with vertical and horizontal position, as well as FoV, between pictures to add variety. These sliders can also help you capture skill animations and VFX that might be difficult to handle otherwise.
You can take close-up screenshots/headshots of your character by positioning them in front of a wall or other path-blocking object, then spinning the camera around so you can see your character's face. You want your FoV slider to be all the way down, and depending on race and pose of choice (emotes like /crossarms are fun) you will probably need to adjust vertical position (near). Back up from the obstruction as necessary if there is any clipping.
A Few Epic-Looking Skills to Start With
Elementalist - Tempest overloads, most Weaver dual attunement skills
Mesmer - Most autoattack chains
Necromancer - Reaper greatsword 2
Engineer - Holosmith skills and Photon Forge
Ranger - Longbow autoattack; snap a pic when the bow string and arrow are drawn back. Druid staff skills. Soulbeast merge stuff.
Thief - Dagger/dagger 3, pistol/pistol 3, staff and rifle skills
Guardian - Greatsword 2, DH longbow and F2, most Firebrand skills (including axe)
Revenant - Most skills look awesome
Warrior - Axe 5, most Berserker and Spellbreaker skills
My Favorite Places (and who I brought there)
(Feel free to contribute more!)
Kryta
Greatheart Weald, Queensdale - beautiful enchanted-looking autumnal forest. Make sure the corrupted oakheart is dead. (Meli)
Phinney Ridge, Queensdale - Just some nice sky lighting and open space. (Meli)
Forests in Lake Doric are generally really pretty. (Meli)
Divinity's Reach has a lot of good spots for slice-of-life pics. (Meli, Aloysia, Geanais)
Wynchona Woods, Harathi Hinterlands - nice trees. (Meli)
Mountainroot Lair, Harathi Hinterlands - splashes of pink and some really fun cave flora. (Meli)
Ascalon
Many spots around the Black Citadel are excellent for legionnaires. I've taken great pics of some of my charr all over the city, and I even brought my little mechanic asura to the molten scrapyard for a photo shoot. (Andromache, Medeia, Sarri)
Much of Fireheart Rise, especially the area around the Citadel of Flame - Even if your look isn't molten, sometimes you can use the scorched ground as an accent to go with skill VFX. (Andromache)
Open spots on the Plains of Ashford have really nice lighting. (Old iteration of Andromache; I also took some open space pics of her as a Rev that I did not keep.)
Hellion Forest, Iron Marches (Meli)
Anya's Strawberry Patch, Diessa Plateau
Shiverpeaks
Open ice areas in Wayfarer Foothills and Frostgorge Sound have good lighting for lighter-colored looks. (Eirwen, Geanais)
Drakkar Lake, Frostgorge Sound (Eirwen)
Dimotiki Waters, Frostgorge Sound - The prettiest underwater area in the game, short of perhaps Bitterfrost.
Naui Waters, Timberline Falls - It looks like Tahoe! (Meli)
Blizzard Basin/Hailstone Floe, Bitterfrost Frontier - amazing lighting on the ice that works best on lighter looks. (Eirwen)
Griffon Old Growth, Bitterfrost Frontier - uniquely pinkish light. (Geanais)
Tarnished Coast
Caledon Forest is always a great place to take a sylvari - loads of good spots including Astorea, the Verdence, Morgan's Spiral (as long as Risen aren't attacking), Briarthorn, and Hamlet of Annwen (as long as hylek aren't occupying). There's also the tengu wall as a backdrop for South or East Asian-inspired looks. (Jaya, Caerridwen, Elainyn, Siofra)
The Grove, just, all of it, especially at night. There are a couple spots where there are swarms of fireflies, and there's also the hidden Garden of Dawn which is a bit overused - but that's 'cause it's good! (Elainyn, Geanais)
Rata Sum has cute spots for asura slice-of-life pics. There are balconies on the lowest level with some nice sky views for both day and night. I haven't liked Metrica as much, though. (Ryxxi, Nexxa, Silaane)
Orr
(I haven't done a lot of pics here. Sorry.)
All six temples of the gods have some nice spots, if I recall correctly. Orr in general is just pretty nice for the right kind of look.
Pyrite Peninsula, Malchor's Leap - A gold-plated bright spot in the middle of zombie hell, and a place I don't see often enough in others' screenshots. (Eirwen)
Artesian Waters, Cursed Shore - The whole thing isn't accessible outside of a single story chapter and reforging Caladbolg; there are some nice spots in there though. (Caerridwen)
Maguuma
The oasis in Dry Top (Caerridwen)
Bongo's Bungalow, Verdant Brink - Lots of fun jungle props to play around with. (Ligeia)
On top of airship wreckages in Verdant Brink - the higher up the better; great sunlight. Best for the crash survivors. (Sarri)
Tarir and Exalted pylons, Auric Basin - Golden shinieeesssss. (Jaya, Lyri)
Morwood Wilds, Auric Basin - Extra wild and jungley. Cool green lighting. (Jaya; I coulda sworn I took pics of Lyri here but I may have replaced them.)
Burnished Quarry, Auric Basin - It's just pretty, ok?
Dragon's Stand north lane has some nice nooks and crannies; the whole area has cool ominous lighting. (Jaya, Eirwen)
Chak tunnels in both Tangled Depths and Dragon's Stand can look nice.
Rata Novus, Tangled Depths - cyber things for sci-fi looks. (Silaane)
Elona
A lot of the desert (including LS4 areas) just looks really good. Even the Desolation has great pic spots. Open sand in Crystal Desert looks especially good, as well as all the cities/towns/temples. I kinda have a weakness for the architecture... (Kyveli, Aanisa, Farhana, Tyra)
Sandstrewn Shrine, The Desolation - Ethereal white-blossomed trees and a very "clean" landscape. (Tyra)
Garden of Seborhin, Domain of Vabbi (Aanisa, Farhana, Tyra)
City of Lights above Desert Highlands - if you can get to this place at night, so worth.
Miscellaneous
Draconis Mons has really nice orange lighting and a natural setting. (Caerridwen)
Ember Bay has a pretty sweet lens flare. It's also orange but better for fiery looks.
Lion's Arch Aerodrome has interesting lighting and the area works well for steampunky looks. (Sarri)
The back side of the trading post in LA (blue tile wall), and the golden wall right inside the Black Lion Vaults, are amazing backdrops if you've got some camera position skills. (Aurea, older outfit for Tyra)
Other Game Modes
Edge of the Mists has some nice spots (temple ruins etc.) but beware of roamers. (Ryxxi)
The middle of Desert Borderlands is a Tarir-esque ruined temple. (Jaya, Lyri?)
The fractal lobby is pretty cool. Bonus points if you get action shots in the blue portal's VFX. (Ryxxi, Silaane)
Cleared raid instances are your friend, too! I have only really taken some nature-y pics in Salvation Pass, but if you wanted to take pics of a White Mantle cosplay there are ample spots for that in multiple wings. Mythwright Gambit is also downright gorgeous as a whole. (Ligeia - so far)

The Tree
Part 2 of coaxing myself into writing again: 1 h flash fiction, unedited.
564 words.
On her way inside, Effy ran into DEATH as much as the Grim Reaper ran into her. Maurice side-stepped the crumpled pair, taking care not to crush any of the hourglasses rolling all over the place beneath his mallets, and made a dash for the garden shed. DEATH looked through her like any odd mortal as he spoke directly to her soul.
CHILD, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN.
Effy recovered from her shock and tears started flooding down her cheeks. DEATH’s question droned inside her head like a funeral bell. The Grim Reaper picked up his hourglasses by the bulk and stuffed them inside his robe. Given the number anyone would have expected his frail frame to bloat like a horny frog but that’s not how things worked around here. DEATH wouldn’t admit it, but Maurice knew his boss cared more about the aesthetics of reaping than the actual soul recycling itself.
Effy didn’t respond. How could she, with her face buried in my gown, DEATH thought. To make matters worse, he could hear snotty noises coming from down below. Now, he didn’t technically hear them in the strict sense of the word; he more or less grew aware that his flawless entity was being soiled by arhythmic breathing and guttural vibrations. Being all bone, he was very sensitive to vibrations. Maurice always said he brought the “good type” to work, unfaltering smile and all that. DEATH didn’t quite understand what he meant but his underling appeared to be indulging his high spirits as he spoke.
Maybe some high spirits would make the stains go away too… DEATH bounced the thought around like a pebble in a bucket. Maurice came yapping back from the shed, clutching the first iron bladed tool he got into the misassembly he called his hands. At that breakneck pace, some strings were due to come apart again. Maybe he would revert to something with a higher tensile strength the next time Maurice dropped his nose into the child’s soup. Steel wire would probably do. Or maybe some of those new fibres his new arrivals had been wearing.
MAURICE, MY SCYTHE, DEATH beckoned with an outstretched arm while keeping his eyes on the child. Three years had passed in her world but she still hadn’t grown above his femur. In fact, she hadn’t grown at all. Maurice hesitated.
“My lord, it… Something must have-”
DEATH wrinkled his phalanges insistently and his underling fell silent. The staff felt unfamiliar… Gone was the knobbly wood he had grown accustomed to. DEATH spun his head with a resounding snap. Instead of his gnarled companion, the death-bringer, the blade all gods and even dandelions yield to, Maurice had given him-
A RAKE.
DEATH’s monotone voice could not accentuate a question or an outcry but both were very much implied.
CHILD, WHERE IS MY SCYTHE. Effy refused to face his scolding sockets and sniffled.
“Sir, we must leave! Now!” Maurice insisted. “The sovereign is on his final breaths! The protocol…” DEATH looked Maurice dead in the eye--something he was very good at.
THE SOVEREIGN IS WORTHY OF THE SCYTHE. I CARE NOT THAT HIS DOMINION THINKS OF HIM AS A WEED. EVERYONE GETS THE SCYTHE.
Something above his underling’s shoulder caught his attention: a crater ten paces wide and a serious lack of shade.
WHERE IS MY TREE.
“The fae took it…” Effy bubbled.
THE FAE TOOK MY TREE.
“No, the scythe! We played and they wouldn’t give it back,” she sobbed. “I took the tree.”

RPG Minis Guide: Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica (Rakdos)
Tumblr media
The next round of miniatures will be focusing on the Rakdos! You can see my prior round ups for Gruul, Dimir, and Golgari
Rakdos was fun to pull together. There’s a lovely spread from actually horrifying to honestly a bit silly, and i think that fits best for whatever “vibe” you want at a time. Plus a lot of the minis can be free handed and have minor alterations made to have some more... unsettling details.

I met the kindest person tonight!
I popped into Auric Basin to see when the meta was and accidentally ported into the middle of a group that was going off to fight the Vinetooth Prime. We beat it! A couple of us stood around talking after, & since I was on a character that didn’t have much in the map, asked if anyone would help me with the Quetzal one. This guy agreed, & we got our ass kicked the first time, but then he came back with his reaper & wrecked shop. We stood around talking for a little bit about necros & other classes we found fun, then went to help someone else with the Balthazar HP. After that, we just ran around a little, doing some gathering & continuing to chat until the meta started. He was so chill, very patient with me when giving suggestions on classes I hadn’t really played before. I had mentioned that I was intimidated by raids, & was not even very good at fractals, so he even invited me to his guild, where they do raid training!
It’s just really nice to run into someone randomly like that, it really made my night!

How Charlie Watts Defined The Rolling Stones’ Sound: A Musical Exploration
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Charlie Watts’ drums were the foundation of The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote the songs, got the most press, and were the most visible members, but Watts dictated the style. Besides being named to Vanity Fair’s “Style” Hall of Fame, Watts kept the Stones’ sound intact and impeccable, regardless of whatever the songwriters brought into the studio.
There is an incident recounted in the 2010 memoir Life, by Richards and James Fox, about a mid-1980s party which hits the nail on the head. Mick drunk-dialed Charlie’s hotel room in the middle of the night to invite him to a party which was raging. Jagger demanded to know “Where’s my drummer?” Watts showed up. He’d showered, shaved, put on a suit and a tie, beautiful shoes, freshly shined, and “you could smell his cologne.” He walked up to the Rolling Stones’ frontman, grabbed him by the lapel, and told him “Don’t ever call me your drummer again. You’re my fucking singer,” and punched Mick in the face.
Charlie Watts, the now, sadly late, great drummer for the Rolling Stones, didn’t capture the spotlight of his bandmates, and never became as iconic as some of his iconic contemporaries. Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham had power, and a double bass sound which could reach the bowels of the earth. Keith Moon was as much a shooting star over his kit as he was in his rock and roll life. Neal Peart had almost as many individual drum heads as Rush’s songs had time signatures, while Ringo Starr made complicated time changes sound easy.
Watts didn’t take solos, wasn’t a bombastic or showy player, and never graduated from the basic four-piece drum set, usually Gretsch in basic black, and preferably circa 1957. Even Ringo’s later Ludwig kit had five pieces. But Charlie leads the band from the bottom of his 22″ x 14″ bass drum, 16″ x 16″ floor tom, 12″ x 8″ mounted tom, and 14″ x 5″ snare. No gongs, no double bass drums.
Watts was not flamboyant. He was solid, laying down methodical beats with minimal fills, and only basic rolls. He could do them, and effortlessly, but he saved them for meaningful moments like 1968’s “Jigsaw Puzzle.” Ever-present, Watts never got in the way, even dropping eighth-note hi-hats to give room to snare. He moves seamlessly through shuffle, psychedelia, disco, reggae, or funk. Charlie drummed in riffs and hooks. They were simple, unique, and got stuck in your mind. His jazz training put a swing feel to strict patterns. He made regular rock-and-roll beats dance and bounce.
We’ve chosen an album’s worth of hot rocks that showcase Watts at his understated best. Turn it up, and appreciate a master at work.
“Come On”
The Rolling Stone’s first single, a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Come On,” was released in June 1963. Just when you think Watts will never deviate from his boogie woogie shuffle, his drum fills counterpoint the song’s break, and give the key change more importance. He rides the cymbal for just a few sparse bars before he brings the song to an almost surprised stop.
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”
Richards’ fuzzed out lead is the standout hook, but the tambourine couplets proved to be the key to the band’s first Number One, (“I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” from June 1964. Watts pounds the beat so relentlessly we know he will never be satisfied. This is four on the floor at its sexiest until disco, and Watts’ brief moment alone just pounds it harder.
“Get Off My Cloud”
Watts serviced the song and the unified sound. He was the one of the most restrained beat-keepers of his generation, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t drive a song through the simplest of iconic and aggressive repetitions. For the verses, Watts plays exactly the same fill every two bars, and defines the  movement. He simplified Chris White’s beat on the Zombies’ “What More Could I Do” to its most propulsive framework on “Get off of My Cloud,” for a run which could be considered the song’s most recognizable hook.
“19th Nervous Breakdown”
After the initial stumble over Brian and Keith’s guitar opening, Charlie lays down a jazz feel for most of “19th Nervous Breakdown,” from 1966. But he takes the choruses to another level with cymbal crashes and rolling toms. Wyman brings his own individual bass rumble to bridge the strings and skins, but when Watts lets out with break intros you feel an oncoming breakdown in your nervous system.
“Paint It Black”
“Paint It, Black” from 1966 might be the most insane performance from the steadiest drummer in rock. Watts rolls, spins, fills, triplets, paradiddles, and marching bands like he’s an army of percussive attackers. This might be his answer to Ringo Starr’s performance on “Rain.” Even among the sitar, Hammond B3, and Mick’s magnetic menace, Watts cannot be denied nor ignored. He’s playing like he’s got an extra palm and we can only imagine how many red doors he could paint to drive the point home.
“Sympathy for the Devil”
Seemingly complex, because of the congas by Rocky Dijon and Wyman’s African shekere shaking, Watts’ drums on “Sympathy for the Devil” are amazingly low-key. They propel the song, and give it that hypnotic insistence. But listen as Watts restrains every urge to fill an empty space. He plays the emptiness, suspense comes between the beats, and Watts never gives in to temptation. He sticks to the basic samba rhythm, which was loosely inspired by Kenny Clarke’s “A Night in Tunisia,” and lets the evil rise to the surface with subtlety a man of wealth and taste could appreciate.
“Street Fighting Man”
“Street Fighting Man” (1968) is an auric nightmare, especially for anyone trying to recreate the sound. Watts used a 1930s practice drum kit, and mounted tambourine-sized skins to small brackets. The “marching charging feet” can almost be heard in the hollow reverb. He gets a large sound, and yet it sounds squeezed in from another room, or coming in through the windows.
“Gimme Shelter”
“Gimme Shelter,” from Let It Bleed (1969), is masterwork of suspense and exaltation. It opens with guitar licks which sound muted by an apocalyptic overcast. Jimmy Miller’s guiro lets the audience know this is no day at the beach, as opposed to the scraped wooden agogo of The Drifters’ “Under the Boardwalk.” Then Watts rains down over everyone in a thunderous downpour. While Mick looks for shelter, Watts brings the storm. Lightning doesn’t even have to strike twice, as the drums continue the same relentless current the band drowns in. The only life preserver in site is the snare. Watts is on full restraint, which makes it all the more menacing.
“Honky Tonk Women”
“Honky Tonk Women” has a more identifiable cowbell than any song other than “Mississippi Queen.” But don’t fear the reaper, death is the furthest thing from the Stones’ mind in this sordid sip of southern comfort. Charlie is so loose on this song, it feels like he’s using a love seat as a drum stool. He takes his time catching up to the band from the very beginning. It honestly feels like he has to be reminded to come in on the three-note-fill before he kicks into the groove.
“Fingerprint File”
“Fingerprint File” is not a well-known song from the band. It closes the Rolling Stones 1974 album It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll, and is the funkiest Watts has ever sounded. Richards leads through the wah-wah, Jagger is on the heavily phased rhythm guitar, Mick Taylor is on bass to free Wyman up for synthesizer. Also at the sessions are the funkmaster Billy Preston on clavinet, and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The Beatles got their title for Rubber Soul from an insult which was hurled at the Stones at the time. This song proves they are capable of more than plastic soul. Watts’ hi-hat work should be studied at Julliard.
“Emotional Rescue”/”Miss You”
A lot of bands “went disco” in the 1970s and 1980s. But The Rolling Stones produced it organically. This is mainly because of Charlie Watts. He was always a master at four-on-floor, and had already proved he’d been listening to the soul sounds of the same period. For “Miss You” from the 1978 Some Girls album, he and Wyman take the most iconic of the genre’s cliches and make it their own. Between the bass octave jumps and the Philadelphia-inspired drumming, this and “Emotional Rescue” were dance floor naturals.
The Charlie Watts Orchestra – “Stompin at the Savoy”
Charlie Watts is known as a one band man, but he’s been playing with jazz ensembles on the side almost throughout the Rolling Stones’ later periods. He’s toured and recorded with his own big band jazz unit, the Charlie Watts Orchestra, which included Jack Bruce on cello. As you can hear in “Stompin at the Savoy,” Watts is an expert ensemble player, who really lets go when having a good time.
Casual mentions
Watts drives “Not Fade Away,” a Stones cover of a Buddy Holly classic, with a tumultuous take on the Bo Diddley beat. He completely reinvigorates its already-electric rhythm, and tops from the bottom. The live version of “Midnight Rambler” contains a very subtle duet between Charlie and Mick. “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” from Sticky Fingers, might be the tightest riff from the rhythm section.
Charlie Watts has laid his last grooves, but he’s left volumes of inspiration.
