Oh it's an invitation to ask you about your little guy?? Is it??? Tell me about him then. I want to know aaaalll of it. Gimme the lore
I think whatever lore I scrabble together, plot holes and all, the most important thing is:
Apollo’s whole thing is that he isn’t supposed to exist, no matter what he thinks or does can change that
he’s all about. love. hand in loveable hand he wants everyone to get out of this alive
when an evoker creates a vex in a normal Minecraft world, they usually pick up the soul of whatever’s around them and turn it into a vex. That can be anything- a cow, a pig, a sheep, chickens, zombies, creepers, enderman, you name it. The stronger the vex the more souls there are in it, so on an easy world it’d be 1-2, normal would he 2-3 and on a hard world it’d have anywhere from 3-6 souls. once they have the souls they fuse them together and then infuse the pure rage from being attacked, and then the vex’s existence can be summarized into: “I exist. I am going to kill”
on the flip side of that, a vex created by the world is NOT infused with rage. they can be any number of souls (like Apollo is 5) and instead of being infused with rage they just. Exist. And they get to decide what to do with their existence.
Apollo was created by accident. Oleander’s soul was on its way to the death game when it ended up colliding with four other souls, and then Apollo got spat out into the mesa with zero direction. The universe didn’t tell him anything. All he knows is “I exist, and I’m supposed to live”
so for the first hour or so before he meets Wicker, he does good ol’ starting minecraft things, gathering wood, getting food, etc, and he dives into his memories and finds out about the souls, the mobs he used to be. in the beginning, he can only really remember what they were, their names, and how they died. but as time passes he learns more about them than just how they died, but a lot of that is pretty boring.
the cow lived in a cow pen until it was killed by accident
the frog was on its way to a froglight farm in the nether and it ended up dying from fall damage at the very last moment
the creeper spawned, fell on someone, and exploded
the stray fell into a lava pit covered by one of them floating layers of snow
Oleander was a pirate, a prince, and Apollo can’t really tell but he thinks he died willingly.
uhh so he finds all that out and decides that because his one mission in this world is to Live, that means he must be like. These mob’s shot at a second life? Or he’s meant to be fulfilling their final wish, or just. He thinks he’s supposed to be all of these things he used to be.
So that’s what he tries to do- it’s why he’s obsessed with slime and froglights, because of the froglight farm- it’s why he has no qualms about blowing up King that one time, it’s why he tries to keep a bow on him as much as possible. He is all of the things he used to be to some degree- at least he thinks so. He thinks this is what he’s supposed to be
So he tries to keep the lives safe. which is a good idea because they’re like his life force, but he’s keeping them around because he thinks he’s supposed to let them rest or whatever, not that they’re the thing that’s literally keeping him alive
then comes. why did he give them away so much? He gave one to Wicker as a sort of. “You said you wanted to be my buddy. Can I trust you? I’m going to trust you. I am choosing to trust you, that you won’t betray me and run away” and he gave her a choice to take one of his lives, she did, and then she kept it- and him- safe for a LONG time
and that initial life giving makes him okay with giving his lives away later. He can trust Annabelle, so if she needs him to give up a life for them to live longer without enemies then he will. He gives the creeper to King, and then Wicker gives the stray to Jayce, and Apollo then extends the kind of trust he has for Wicker onto Jayce
so another part of Apollo is just. He trusts people he shouldn’t. But that ties back into the “hand in lovable hand” thing, he wants everyone to live and that means trusting everyone
After he’s forced to start trusting Jayce he just. Does. and it’s easy to do, Jayce is fun and nice to be around and an easy person to trust
As Apollo loses more of his lives he starts to lose more of himself - he’s maybe realizing that oh. Maybe he isn’t all of these mobs. maybe what he’s doing isn’t actually doing anything, but that- that can’t possibly be true, if that was true then he just spent his whole existence doing something that didn’t matter-
Wicker goes red.
That’s when the real turning point is- he’s sort of grappling with lots of things when he’s yellow, the Void is talking in the back of his head, telling him to jump to jump come down come jump jump jump we’ll catch you jump and when wicker goes red that’s what does it for him, he can’t do anything because his soulmate isn’t allowed to look at him what is he supposed to do with himself??
So Jayce and Pyre take him to the deep dark, and it isn’t the Void but the skulk is close enough and he jumps, falls into the beyond just like Oleander did, and now he’s got one life left and he thinks it’s Oleander, because now he remembers everything Oleander was supposed to be. he’s what’s left of Oleander, so that must make him His Legacy, right? because- because surely all of this wasn’t for nothing
he gets quiet, only talks when he feels like he needs to. everything he did was for nothing. everything he thought he was turned out to be nothing at all. there isn’t anything worth fighting for now, they’re going to die, and he KNOWS they’re going to die because the void is still there in the back of his head, something like a timer or a chant, you’ll die you’ll die you’ll die you’ll die and they'll die too
he thinks back on his lives, and it’s a coincidence that he died in all the same ways his precious lives did, but maybe it isn’t just coincidence and instead some sign from the universe that there’s a chance for him to live again just like they did. there’s one death left, and one way to get it.
he doesn’t ask wicker to do it. He’s asked her to kill him before, offered himself up as a failsafe in case they can’t get a boogey kill in time and wicker has said no time and time again so he can’t ask them. He thinks Jayce would be the same- mostly he just doesn’t want his allies to kill him.
so he goes to Mikey, because there’s someone who looks like Mikey in Oleander’s memories and Oleander trusts not-mikey, so why can’t Apollo trust real mikey? he’s also heard whispers of mikey maybe being a god and he needs all the help he can get, really.
so he begs mikey to kill him, and Mikey does. Apollo hopes and prays that he’ll live again, that he’ll respawn in Wicker’s world, prays that he meets Caroline and together they wait together for Annabelle to come home. He hopes that maybe- just maybe- his existence is proof that some mobs get a second chance.
he doesn’t respawn.
there’s an hour in the void where he talks to Oleander, confesses everything he thought he knew. he regrets not saying goodbye. and Oleander listens.
because he’s oleander’s soul, he gets fused back into Oleander and that’s that.
oleander gets to talk to Annabelle, then goes back to his own world after aos ends. He goes to build a grave for Apollo and thinks about what the little pixie told him, and decides to try to bring him back after wondering “Why do I get to live and he doesn’t? He was only ever trying to be kind.”
apollo is revived after a LOT of trial and error and weird magic, and Oleander hand-delivers him across the void in a disney treasure planet esque spaceship, and badda bing badda boom ranchers reunited!!
a few months pass where he gets to live and be himself and he picks the name Tupper, and then they find Jayce and then strawberry cream happy ending :3
