The wattpad issue.

Sooo I’m not sure if I’m late to the party but I’ve done some digging regarding the MASSIVE issue that many fic writes have with the new content guidelines. As far as I gathered from it they are upping the age of consent in their stories from 16 to 18. Which means if you write about two adults that are 18 and above, you should be fine.

And yes, they do hold the right to remove content, however, that only seems to apply to very, very explicit sexual content and specific content that includes animals in said content. As the guidelines word it "content that only serves for arousal" so what I take from it is that they remove books that are exclusively smut. If you write a whole fic and then throw in one or two smut chapters that should be fine.

Maybe I was just lucky but as someone who writes about adult themes AND includes smut chapters in all of my work I haven’t been affected yet. But who knows what the future might bring.

someone on tiktok wanted a Bridgerton inspired marauders fic based in 1800s to be written, so I decided to take it upon myself, but I must ask: do people prefer reading stuff on Ao3 or wattpad?? I usually used tumblr so someone who has written on both please help me out here.

I finished reading all of my open Ao3 tabs, and decided to move on to Wattpad and holy shit.

The fics had shorter chapters, less chapters, worse spell check, from off characterization to just plain wrong characterization, angst just for angst sake, some less than PG scenes and themes without tagging it or putting it in the description, entire paragraphs dedicated to what a character was wearing, and 90% of them were discontinued or on hiatus.

Oh, and the author notes in the middle of paragraphs. And in between chapters. Honestly if the note is nulled, for instance, a hiatus note, and the hiatus is over, please delete it! I found a fic with a lot of chapters, and thought it would be a fun read. When I checked the chapter list, there were 3 chapters at most, and 3-5 Authors note chapters in between each one. I didn't end up reading it.

It was also so hard to find anything I wanted, because when I used search, I typed in one FANDOM SPECIFIC keyword, and the first five fics that popped up weren't even from that fandom. They weren't crossovers either. I had to look at reading lists just to find fics to sort through.

There's no way to filter either! If I look up a ship name, I have to sort through the smut, oneshot books, unnecessary angst, and art books, just to find one fic that fits my criteria of "fluff of this one ship".

Now I know why my fics were so bad when I was younger, I had no clue about Ao3, so I was only exposed to Wattpad fics.

Hi, anon!

No, I don’t have an account (for a good reason actually). When I first started I looked at the options and obviously AO3 and Wattpad were the go to. While AO3 defo is made for posting fanfiction and doesn’t require an account to read on there I felt overwhelmed with how the website works (and unfortunately also how it is designed). It’s also a little annoying that they don’t have an app as far as I’m concerned. I just don’t have the patience to always log in and off whenever I feel like writing something down real quick. Wattpad also has better copyright laws (even for fanfics) so I don’t have to worry that stuff gets stolen or translated into other languages without my consent, which tends to happen on AO3 quite often.

Why did no one tell me that fairy tales count as their own fandoms on AO3?

I’d always avoided fanfic and fandom culture because seeing other people’s (entirely subjectively) Wrong Opinions on existing IP tend to make me irrationally angry (and that is something I’d like to work on Not Doing—why do I do that?) but!!! Straight-up fairy tale retellings? That aren’t AUs of copyrighted media?? Taking the tools of modern transformative fiction and applying them to traditional tale types and thus creating a hybrid between the very new and the very old???

#this is so so exciting #like this is going to be my access point into online fanfic culture I need for ALL the analysis I want to do #on continuing traditions of what makes a retelling and appropriation of the broadcast into the folk levels #AHHHHH #first person #grad school fodder #but also this just means I have a ton more retelling to read through! #without having to account for the bias of a traditional publishing house and editor #I suspect ao3 itself is going to reveal a stylistic bias of people already inclined to post there for other non fairytale works #but to my outsider understanding it’s not a self contained social media platform the way wattpad was #it’s more of a hosting site? so it’s not uncommon for authors to derive traffic from external vs internal sources? #which would theoretically indicate a lot more stylistic variation #we will see we will see!!! so much to see!!!
