Can you tell me where in the myths Ares is the protector of mistreated ones? I don't mean any kind of modern interpretations, but rather some credible sources to show that any of ancients perceived him that way. I can't find any myths also where he protect any women outside his family. I do like Ares but I don't want to make claims that are wrong and you seem to know a lot about him.

And what is your opinion on the festival of Ares where no women were allowed? Doesn't that contradict the festival where he was feasted upon by women?

Interesting!

Well, there is no such a source that directly claims that Ares is "the protector of the mistreated". It is a general belief that was conducted from his mythology. I first heard the phrase "Protector of the mistreated" from one of my visits to a museum here in Greece, as an archeologist explained some scenery.

I had the same question just like you, and what I did of course was to research more this term, and by reading and interpreting, the conclusion was the same.

Let me be more specific.

Ares avenged his daughter's sexual assault by Hallirothios. Poseidon demanded Ares to be tried on Areios Pagos. It was the first try to have happened. Avenging a rape in ancient times was something out of logic, because women didn't have the rights they have today, especially in ancient Athens, were the incident took place. Ares surprised everyone with his action. All the male gods voted for Ares' guilt, but all the female goddesses voted for Ares' innocence. Ares was finally acquitted of all charges, because Athena's vote counted as double. That speaks volumes. Ares gave voice to the rights of the mistreated women by sexual abuse, to which all of the goddesses agreed.

Also, Ares was the first one of the gods to defend Olympus against the Aloadai. Both the Aloadai claimed to be wedded to Hera and Artemis, after their conquer. Ares came to defend Olympus and the honor of his mother and sister. And the most surprising thing is that Ares and Artemis do not interact much in Greek mythology, apart from both siding with the Trojans in the Trojan War. There are no whatsoever myths about these two. And what is more interesting is the fact that when Ares was trapped, Artemis and Hermes freed him. That means that Artemis may have appreciated Ares' stance towards her.

And I wanna disagree to the fact that Ares supported only his family. Once upon a time, there was a typical Greek miserable woman, wedded to an abusive husband. That woman wanted to get out of that life and she trained herself and the women in her town in martial arts. Then, when they were trained enough, they slew all the men in the town and left to a land to built their own feminine city. They opposed many enemies on the road there, and Ares was impressed by that woman's initiative. Ares, for tge first time ever, descended from Olympus to the mortal world to meet this woman and offer her a favor. She would build him a temple in his name, and he will make the feminine tribe one of the most fearful and feared tribe of women all around the word. The woman accepted the offer, and she was described as Otrera, the first queen of the Amazons and Ares' bride. From Otrera's rise till the fall of the Amazon nation, Ares kept his promise to always protect and be there for them. He helped those mistreated women to build a huge empire and leave and even greater legacy behind them....

Now, about the festival of Ares that no women were allowed, there is not much to say. Greeks had their own ways to worship a god, for their own reasons. It seems fair that if there was a feast were no men were allowed, then there should have been one were no women were allowed.

To sum this up, there is no such a source that directly claims Ares to be the protector of the mistreated. It is just a title that was appraised to him by his contribution to such cases. Some things have a deeper meaning, which only can be conceived through research! Thanks for the question! 😉😄

Athena and Ares Kids

False- Favored daughter of Athena. Best War strategist, greatest Archer of her siblings. Her father died when she was young, leaving her defenseless. Single-handedly got to camp at the age of 6. Oldest member of camp. Joined the Hunt at 16.

Etho- Always planning something. Typical gray eyes, used to have black hair. Went on a quest and came back with a scar, white hair, and very broody. Disappeared after a few years- unknown.

Gem- Gets along great with the Demeter cabin. Came to camp with Sausage, Fwhip, and Zed and now they are all honorary found family. Great swordswoman. Joined the Hunt at 14.

Impulse- Smart. Great tinkerer and craftsmen. His Dad was an inventor, and alive. Can craft almost anything, honorary brother of Hephaestus cabin and Skizz. Tango and he get into lots of fire trouble. Not the best at being strategy smart, or good at fighting, but great with people.

Pearl- Greatest daughter of Ares. Blood-thirsty. Has several mood swings. Great with plants, love playing pranks, and loves fighting the best. Knows how to weild several weapons. Once fought her own father and won. Came to camp when she was 8. Don't talk about her dad.

Puffy- Great strategist, fighter, and people person. Loves kids. Will fight anyone for the kids. Veteran Camper. Came back to help.

Reddoons- showed up at camp, found out he was a son of Ares, then disappeared. May or May not be working with the enemy.

Tapl- great Archer, and that's kinda it. Knows how to get out a situation. Very bored. Wished his dad was Apollo.

Techno- Greatest son of Ares. One of the few people who can beat Pearl, Liz, False, and Dream. Wished he was a son Athena. Doesn't like his dad. Tries to not be bloody thirsty like his dad, but in the heat of battle- well. Was brought to camp by Phil. In college. Mom died at War.

Xisuma- Veteran camper. Basically the adult supervision. Has the best plans. Took False in and helped her, along with several others, dubbing themselves as Hermits. Has a stygian sword, gift from Hades and Joe after helping them in the Underworld- yes he's been to the underworld, he's been to several places. Waves the fans off- but let's be real this guy was SICK back in his day.

Bek- strongest Ares kid. Both physically and will. Doesn't use weapons- only fists.

Welsknight- Doesn't like his dad, but understands the honor and need of War. Man came from a line of knights, holds up chivalry. Veteran person. Visits sometimes. Best friends with X, went on several adventures with him, like that time he held up the sky or killed a hydra or fought a Titan- ya know stuff.

Quig- Uses sword and only sword. Quick, in everything. Doesn't like to talk much. Great friends with Pete. In college. Dad died in shooter stampede. Hates guns.

Pete- Veteran camper. Earned a chariot in battle. Has pet birds. Great Archer and sword fighter. Green eyes that can peirce the soul or make you eat your vegetables.

Pigical- Also doesn't like his dad- surprising I know. Uses fast and nimble combat. Tries to be a pacisft. Weak. Very kind though. His mom banished him.

Boffy- most cruel son of Ares. Uses a scythe. Great fighter, but also very dangerous. Rumors said he tortured his victims, enjoying death. Disappeared. No one knows where, hopefully not to the enemy.

Muka- carries a gun. Son of Ares with modern weapons. Has a pet mechanical wolf. Disappeared, but more of a loner. Found the other camp, kinda just chills. Great mom visits regularly.

Bb makes a trade with the worst warlord doflamingo information and alliances for the famous phoenix

Corazon tries to warn law away from the guilded cage that doflamingo keeps. Tries to tell him the man inside is too broken.

“He talks all the time.” Law rolls his eyes, with a proper amount of exasperation of a 10 year old can produce. “You just suck at listening.”

For the second time law shocks both Corazon the brother and rocinate the marine into silence. It’s stupid, it is and reckless and every other thing he shouldn’t be doing because he’s already pushing it with law half the time. But Corazon sits in front of the cage during his watch. The man inside is haggard, blood matting shaggy hair and cuts that ooze. One piercing blue eye stares back out from the damage.

“Are, you.. ok?”

A beat, then raspy laughter breaks out quickly dissolving into a wet cough. “A marine masquerading as a pirate asks if I’m ok.” The man tilts his head, as words pour out in choppy gasps. “Sounds like the start of a bad joke.”

- Corazon now has to steal law and marco away from doflamingo.

-Marco does help slow the spread of amber lead

- marco is mostly sane still but he’s also very very traumatized: bb kinda tortured him into breaking so that’s a thing. He was kept drugged and chained for a long time

- white beard is still looking for marco

- doflamingo goes celestial with marco quite a bit (my property and all)

When the day comes that Cora-san is taking Law, he knows he has to take Marco with them. With Law passed out and half-delirious with fever in the little single-mast dingy he's 'acquired' (a bad day for the kid), he uses his fruit to it's fullest extent.

The man is awake-eyes barely open with crusted old blood staining his eyelashes-when he silently slips past the usual guard. The key in the lock, normally a loud clanking thing, is utterly soundless. The creaking, groaning resistance of the rusty hinges of the cage have only specks of falling dirt to signal their protest. Marco lifts his head just barely, eyes pulling as wide as they can. A cut under his jaw drips red.

Cora-san pulls on a pair of gloves he stole and sets about removing the seastone thorns and chains in total absence of sound. By the end he's sweating with the effort-each thorn and nail pulling a harsh jerking movement from the man that makes no noise. Marco's wounds steadily worsened and blood flows freely to the floor of the cage.

But the moment the last cuff slides off, Marco throws himself backwards. Blue and gold heat rushes to fill the space and Rocinante staggers to the other side of the small cage to watch in silent awe.

The Phoenix is beautiful, and angry. It's eyes scream murder and it's beak opens when the flames properly clear, but just as the half-hour preceding didn't, no sound comes. Rocinante knows they're running out of time for this to work, so he offers a hand to the man-turned-creature and, finally, lets his voice be known.

"We need to go. I have a way off this island."

The Phoenix's eyes narrow to dangerous slits, but it's wings draw in and the fire sheds off it's body like feathers. The man, Marco, stands in it's place utterly pristine. An enviable power, Rocinante thinks only to himself as they sneak away.

An enviable power indeed, he thinks again as Marco-without a word or even the suggestion of help-puts his healing hands on Law and the flush of the boy's fever fades within minutes.

The thought changes, envy caving under something else, as days turn to weeks seeking answers for Law's condition. Marco disappears on the second island they visit and for an hour or so Rocinante thinks that he's taken off, returned to his father's fleet that he speaks of only fondly with a tired smile. Instead he returns just as Rocinante and Law do to their transport, his shoulders pulled back confidently.

He says nothing of his disappearance.

Then, the night that he finds the fruit, Law's fruit, something changes. He falls, bleeding out, against the most valuable treasure chest in the world believing Law is safe knowing Marco is waiting for the kid just offshore in a raft. He passes out knowing he won't wake up.

He wakes up.

Curled up against his side near his hip is Law, patches of white skin already gaining color. Standing at the end of the bed is a nurse in the most unprofessionally tight set of scrubs he's ever seen. Sitting in a chair to the side of the bed, behind Law's tiny back, is Marco with his head tilted back and eyes closed, snoring lightly.
