“Detective.”

There’s just something about the way Connor speaks. The cadence, the pitch, the enunciation of each word. It’s painfully evident that he isn’t human. Everything about him is so machine-like that even his perfect, human-like exterior could not fool anyone. However it is something you got used to. Hearing the android speak your name and call you ‘Detective’ back a while ago felt somewhat unsettling. Now it’s so easy to recognize that it almost makes you feel at ease.

“Do you seriously think I’m an android? I don’t wanna deal with those fucking machines, either. I’d be glad if you put a bullet through them rather than me.”

Turns out hearing him fake being a human is ten times more terrifying than his android speech patterns could ever hope to be.

This was not part of the plan.

You were sent with a unit to patrol around the streets for any android who still hadn’t been brought back or destroyed. You weren’t a fan of this whole assignment, but felt better than the rookies who were sent out to shoot humanoid robots as their first field mission probably did.

It would be fine, is what you told yourself, because you didn’t feel anything towards Cyberlife’s creations enough to be completely uncomfortable with the idea of their blue blood on your hands, though it wasn’t ideal. You could manage. Until the first person you came across happened to be the one android you genuinely cared about.

“I don’t think he’s one of them…” one of your fellow officers murmurs next to you. You suddenly become very aware of the gun he, too, is holding and pointing towards the target. Fuck. As if the situation wasn’t bad enough.

At least this idiot’s performance seems to be fooling them.

You wait one second, then sigh on the second, and finally lower your gun on the third. “You shouldn’t be here.” you say casually, prompting your colleagues to relax and the atmosphere to lighten a little. Your heart is in your throat, however. “We’ve got orders to round up every android we see around here. You should go home. This isn’t exactly safe.”

“I know, I know.” he sighs, rolling his eyes a little, “I was gonna leave anyways, thanks.”

Your coworkers mumble to themselves about how disagreeable this guy’s attitude is and it’s enough for them to miss the wink the latter sends your way as he leaves. You almost regret not shooting a bullet through his head.

Still, you sigh in relief, setting your gun back at your side and running a hand over your face. You don’t think you can continue patrolling in peace. There’s one too many questions in your mind and the key to answering them is escaping from your grasp.

You take the phone in your pocket and pretend to get a call, moving it to your ear and looking at the members of your team. “I’ll join up with you later.” you say, gesturing towards your phone. They nod and walk away, and you do the same, feeling more relieved than ever that these people see you as a leader of sorts. They won’t question you on anything. You hurry towards the direction your so-called partner left to the moment they’re out of sight.

A rooftop door, stairs, and more stairs. You’re jogging down like you’re chasing a criminal on the run. You’re down to the fifth floor out of eight when someone grabs your arm and pulls you out a door.

“Wha—” you try to yell, but a cold hand settle over your mouth. Your body relaxes but your expression tenses. Connor. “Let me go,” you mumble incoherently, surprisingly succeeding in getting him to let you step away.

You sigh and shake your head, turning around abruptly. His ‘human costume’ (which really just was a grey suit jacket thrown over what should’ve been his Cyberlife uniform, glasses, and a cap to hide his LED) is already gone, replaced by his usual attire, just missing his jacket.

“What the hell was that about?” you ask, annoyed, pointing towards the staircase (back there, on the roof) and the android simply shrugs. “Connor.”

“I was undercover, Detective. I thought someone as smart as you would recognize that much.” he says, his tone back to normal. You’d feel relieved if he wasn’t being so irritating. “Was I wrong?”

Your face drops. “No. I figured as much. But what for?” you sigh, crossing your arms.

“Same mission as always.”

“Who are you chasing? Did you find the place?”

“I have no reason to tell you.”

It only clicks then that while you know about Connor continuing his mission after being laid off the case, you’re not part of it anymore. He had to be sent back to Cyberlife, and you should’ve been forgetting about him entirely. You’re still DPD, and you have orders to shoot Androids on sight— Which you clearly aren’t following. He’s right. He has no reason to tell you.

Still.

You grab his arm when he threatens to walk away. You’re not sure what you want to say, but you’re not done talking. He lets you. “Connor.”

“Detective.” he says. You straighten your back and sigh, not breaking eye contact. He tilts his head to the side and his LED flashes yellow for an instant. “You’re angry.”

Of course you’re angry. He’s infuriating. There’s something about how logical and dead-set on following every single rule he is that makes Connor the most annoying individual you’ve ever talked to. Everything he does has to be for his mission. Every single thing.

“Do threats work with you?” you ask blankly, “If you don’t tell me where it is, I’ll get Cyberlife to bring you back, and all that?”

When he takes a step closer to you again, forcing your back to press against the wall, and his LED does not even threaten to change hues, you’re taken aback. Just a bit. It’s the same kind of frustrated attitude you would’ve expected from a human after saying what you just did. But not Connor.

He doesn’t seem frustrated, though. And you know he can look annoyed. He just doesn’t. So he must not be. And you want to find what it is he’s doing exactly, stepping closer to you without even saying a word, but your brain feels like it’s short-circuiting at the distance between you two. You know he does everything for his work. Does he think you have new information on deviants? Does he really believe you would call Cyberlife on him? Is he using his stupid interrogation module on you? Whatever it is makes you even more annoyed.

The silence feels heavy. It makes things worse. It gives your brain time to process how this is making you feel and it’s no good at all. “What?” you break the silence, tone somewhat irritated.

“I’m trying to understand the reason why you’re so angry at me.” he explains simply, like it makes sense. His eyes narrow a bit and the LED at the side of his head flickers yellow for a moment. “And no, Detective. Threats don’t work on me. Not when I can tell you’re lying so easily.” he adds, quieter.

“Shut up.” you scoff.

“I dont think I will.”

“Connor.”

“— However,” he interrupts, “I can step away from you at any moment if you tell me to.”

“No.”

“No?”

What— No?! You register the word after saying it and sigh, face contorting into a somewhat pained expression. You panicked and said it, your mind processing his offer as him leaving you again— With no information and nothing to ease your stupid worries. Now it just sounds odd.

Is that embarrassment?

“You didn’t finish what you were trying to do, did you? You haven’t told me why I’m angry yet. Since you apparently care so much.” you say, tone sounding much softer than before. Your apparent discomposure took away all the bitterness from your voice. Interesting.

Truth be told, Connor knows why you’re angry. He’s not letting you in on the details of what he’s doing despite the time you spent working as partners a very short while ago. He’s spent enough time with people, and you especially, to know that after forming some kind of bond with a work partner, it would be frustrating not to receive information about their mission the way you used to from them—

Especially considering he was still chasing after something you both knew about. Jericho. But he cannot tell you about that. Not… Right now.

What he really was trying to do was evaluate how much of a threat you really could be to his investigation. He didn’t sense any hostility before and he doesn’t now, and you could’ve shot him but you didn’t. But it’s not enough. He needs more time— More evidence that it’s fine. That’s why he pulled you here in the first place. That’s why he pressured you to talk.

He needs to make sure killing you isn’t necessary.

“Because I posed a threat to the stability of your current mission earlier. You wouldn’t have been able to shoot me had I been discovered, and your reaction to your colleagues shooting me would’ve jeopardized your job itself.” he answers.

This reasoning would make sense.

“That’s not it.” you sigh.

Your heartbeat is slowing down. No good. Connor leans his arm on the wall next to you and moves closer. Your heartbeat picks up in speed. It’s almost alarming. So maybe he won’t ever know why your heart beats so heavily against your ribcage. So he just has to pressure the right places and demand answers. He unfortunately can’t allow you to relax. He won’t get anything out of you if you’re calm. You’re much too turbulent for that.

Or maybe he’ll just have to ask. In a normal way.

“Detective, what’s wrong with you?”

The sound of the radio attached to your side breaks this prolonged silence with the promise of separation. You take it, eyes not leaving Connor’s, and listen to your colleague speak. You tell them you’ll be right there. You’re not one to be late. He knows you’ll really leave this time— Too far away for him to hope to talk to you again, if anything goes awry.

You turn the radio off and put it back where it was. “Hope you succeed, then.” you say, bitter, and push yourself up to start walking away.

“Take care of yourself, Detective.” Connor says. Asks. The words come out before he can really think. Something about your voice and this whole atmosphere made him… Feel uneasy. Like he needed to say something. If this is how your partnership ends, he doesn’t believe it should be on such a sour note. He cares doesn’t dislike you at all, so why should it?

You stagger a little, seemingly stopping in your tracks, but moving again no more than a second later. “You too, Connor.”

Somehow, goodbyes had never seemed so sad.

valentina could see it as if it was written all over you the moment you entered the gym — you were a first timer.

the way your eyes darted around the building, clearly having no set plan on what you wanted to do, to how you paused and seemed unsure when you were trying to use a machine you had obviously never touched before, she knew you'd probably never been to a gym before that day.

it was a common enough occurrence, though, so she paid no mind to you at first. what reason did she have not to? but she couldn’t help the curiosity piquing in her mind as you lingered on her thoughts…

so she was quite surprised to have her workout interrupted by you, wandering up to her and shyly asking how to operate the bench she was using.

and she even surprised herself when, rather than counter you disrupting her routine with an annoyed look or rude comment like she’d do to anyone else, she completely ceased her workout to respond to you.

“oh, this? no way, this is way too much for someone just starting. let me show you somethin' better.”

and just like that, the two of you became acquainted by her whisking you off to work out together.

it was simple enough of a day — you stretched together, chatted, she offered you her special enhanced water to ensure you stayed hydrated (and pretended her heart didn’t skip a beat when you accepted), and finally, she deemed you ready to actually begin to exercise.

it didn’t take long for valentina to fall for you after that. you were so attentive, so curious for her! the way you tilted your head as she explained the various buttons and modes for her favorite workout machines, the little “oh!” you exclaimed when you understood something, those cute noises you made when you did your stretches…

the lady was usually so dedicated to her body. the fact that she had grown so keen on helping you with yours was definitely a first for her.

“look at you! you’re getting the hang of it so fast!” she’d praise when you successfully did a rep on your own.

“awh, your form’s way off. let me help you…” she’d say with teasing pretend disappointment when your posture wasn’t right.

the way you thanked her every time you got something done with her help was enough to drive her wild! you were just so cute! so fucking cute! you were exactly her type!

and she was just so helpful, you thought. every time someone dared to interrupt your time together, they were met with valentina snapping at them, demanding they'd buzz off and leave the two of you be. any fears you might've had of being harassed by crude gym goers was completely quelled with her by your side.

you could've almost believed that the weight she dropped on the foot of the guy who started to bother you when she had stepped away probably didn't slip from her hands on accident... but what proof did you have? the guy was leaving anyway...

by the time the day had ended and you were ready to go home, you had gotten far more done than you ever expected to. and sure, you were sore and ready to collapse, but your new friend was nice enough to order you an uber home! something she wish she'd done when she first started, she claimed. having your address was a nice bonus, too... but she definitely didn't think about that.

the two of you came to sort of an agreement when the day had ended and you were ready to go. you exchanged numbers, deeming each other as training buddies of sorts, and said your goodbyes. it made her heart swell knowing you liked her enough to come to her every time you came to the gym!

valentina had never felt this way towards anyone she had met before that point, but she grew to like the rapid pounding in her heart when the two of you interacted. the rush was even better than working out.

so when you parted, she made sure to mark her calendar to the day you'd return. she was gonna be ready. she'd push you even harder, she decided.

she was gonna make your heart race the same way you'd made hers.

- I like to imagine they have a lot of movie nights cause scott just orders a ton and still rents movies from that place I forget the name of where Kim works 😭 most nights acott would prolly pick the movie but sometimes wallace gets a chance. idrk what kinda movies he would like but I feel at least once he would waste his turn to purposefully rent a movie he knows scott would hate just to see him suffer <3 true love. in his defense he had to sit through the sonic movie (or if it takes place in 2004 then sonic ova) at least a hundred times.

- I don't think scott would particularly be scared of horror movies but whenever they watch one wallace would definitely tease and try to freak him out. scott would get very annoyed and insist his teasing isn't working and in his defense it isn't!! it's a shitty 80s slasher film or at least he thinks until all the lights are off and there's weird noises outside. suddenly he's tugging on wallace and holding onto him without even realizing.

^^ I j wanna make a point bc I don't want this to come off as like babying or ooc or even fetishizing cause i think scott could definitely handle horror movies. I don't think he's a horror fanatic but he has respect for the classics. it's like wallaces relentless teasing after an especially scary horror movie he hasn't seen, in the middle of the night, with particular weird noises outside. it's like a rly specific situation cause he's usually fine with horror. i didn’t rly sleep last night yap sesh below the cut

missed mayday festivities because i am debilitatingly socially anxious but then went camping for a friends bday and felt refreshed by being able to see soooo many stars and be outside…(and go on the most extreme hike of my life dude omfg)

while we were camping my digi cam fell out of my pocket when i laid on the ground to look at the sky and stars and it stormed that night and my camera got destroyed. hoping the sd card is salvageable..

creepy had hella ticks on him (including one thats head got stuck in his uhh..wiener lol) went to the vet got em removed in total there were 8 (!!) that we found. he has so much fur man idk there could be some more on him but at least they’d be dead atp because i ALSO finally got a flea tick preventative that he can take monthly. it’s been impossible to get a vet appointment anywhere, especially at the clinic i’ve been taking him to since he was a bb. praying he didn’t contract anything from the ticks…we’ll get a blood test sometime in september-december

bestie soup told me u could see the northern lights in the city last night + they sent me some pics but i pulled a leg muscle skating n it hurt too bad to waddle over to the overpass (plus there’s been several shootings in my neighborhood the past couple weeks outside my building so i don’t rly like going out at night rn anyway)

yesterday oomf texted the gc n said a friend of a friend asked him where to listen to my music online bc they loved my set :’)) the last time i played a show was the beginning of march!!!! that made me feel rly good so now i have more incentive to finally upload things to soundcloud again. might work on that later today…like. might,…finally post something

he said he sent them a link to my old bandcamp and i forgot i never deleted my music there i only scrubbed my sc so i went over n listened to what i posted. it was kinda cute. in 2020 i started using ableton for the first time consistently and actually tried to figure out how to make stuff w it so everything f from that time is like. ahh. i’d do that so different now!! but at the time i was so proud of myself and that makes me feel kinda fuzzy (in a good way) like noticeable artistic growth yanno? n also knowing that version of myself who was constantly suffering and seeking an End still felt excited abt what i was making. it’s cute. my old self is someone ive made peace w and hold close to my heart in the ‘it’s different now and it’s Awesome’ way like fuck yea lil buddy you got clean and made it out alive. that’s sick

some of my old music goes hard asf too tho. a lot of unreleased stuff on my google drive i dug thru after listening to my bandcamp i don’t even rly remember making but i was like :0 !!

i was up until 5:30am working on a flyer !! i wanna make more flyers!! i miss making flyers. i’m outta practice and using procreate bc i don’t have photoshop anymore so still a newbie on the program front but i think. i did a good job and it looks cool so that’s nice

My head is full of thoughts of him but none of the thoughts are cohesive cuz in all my years I still don't fully understand him

He's a guy who comes off as lighthearted and carefree but when you really look at him I think he's such a hardworking person. He only eats food that's healthy for him, never eating anything just because he wants to; god knows being a teacher is such a difficult job, grading papers, teaching a classroom of teenagers who didn't choose to be there, so much paperwork; in his diary, he says that he always takes notes on how every lesson goes and he plans each lesson 3 days in advance.

After finishing work at school, he works another job, one that's actually very strenuous and physically demanding and loud and surrounded by so many people. When does he practice?

Also, when does he eat? He'll have Tei's breakfast in the morning, then have what, canteen food at school?? Then what'll he have after that? Some days he comes home so late he probably doesn't even get dinner. Does he have the time??

Then ik he likes to watch anime at night so how much does he sleep? He has bath in morning and probably has lengthy skincare routine. Bet you any money he shaves.. Even waxes.

Look, I'm basically saying, how much damn time to himself does he even have? Ik Eri said he comes home holding shopping bags everyday but he also often splashes out on Eri too, spending a lot on her and the dolls. I think it's cute.

But he has a reputation for being lighthearted and carefree, as if he has no responsibilities or worries. He acts like that and purposely doesn't talk about the work he does, probably cuz he just doesn't like talking about that stuff anyway? I always wonder about why he never tells anyone about him being a drummer - you'd think it'd be something he'd boast about? All the cheering fans? But he keeps it a secret..

Either way. I rly don't remember the url even tho I rly rly wish I did but someone said that Tei's treatment of Yuri is purposeful so that he gets a reputation of not just being carefree but also an incompetent joke. Because they share a room, Yuri somehow found out about Tei's secret desires, so Tei purposefully makes people want to not take Yuri seriously so that of he ever tells anyone about Tei, they won't believe him

Yuri is so confusing and fascinating and amazing and sweet and cute and complicated..

He explains, on the date he takes Eri on, that he isn't just a flirt for fun: he simply mirrors the love that other people are already giving him. He says that he does this because it's both in his concept and because he believes it to be the polite thing to do

However, he also displays that he has difficulty understanding what other people are feeling, often misunderstanding that Eri isn't angry when she very much is and constantly finds her actions and emotions confusing. I think possibly the funniest instance of this is when the Korean teacher is so obviously flirting with him, giving him home baked muffins and asking him to eat with her but he doesn't even realise that she's flirting and he speaks to her sincerely and calmly, actually declining to eat lunch with her.

He only ever responds to people's love, never initiating it himself, but he says that Eri is the first/only person he's ever wanted to initiate love with. I think tho that his love for her is his way of thanking her for buying and loving him in the first place, which is very sweet.

He's so fascinating to me because I don't- I still don't understand him. I love him.

Wait! I just thought of something. Yuri's issue always reminds me of a quote from Bojack Horseman: "Everybody loves you. But nobody likes you." He is surrounded by people who love him but don't like him. They only really like him for his looks, for who he is on the surface. Their love for him is insincere so therefore, the love he mirrors to them is insincere too.

He's only really used to experiencing and mirroring that insincere kind of love. So is that why he didn't understand that the Korean teacher was flirting? Because she knows him better than most the other people who flirt with him, and potentially does love him sincerely since she made homemade muffins for him. Because her love for him is sincere, is that why he didn't understand what she was feeling? He thought she was just being nice and took the muffins out of politeness

A particular quote that interests me about Yuri is one in which he implies he knows people's love for him is not sincere. After Eri leaves the club, he chases after her, and she asks him why he left since people will surely miss him if he's gone. But he responds with something to the effect of "they won't even notice I'm gone" which I think speaks such volumes about him, his character, his beliefs, and his attitude towards those people

He comes off as such a player but he knows they don't really care about him and by his choice to follow Eri, he doesn't damn care about them either. He understands that their love is superficial but superficial love is the only thing he does understand.. When he realises that the reason he wants to give things to Eri is because his love for her isn't superficial, he doesn't know what to do. It's too unfamiliar to him, on top of the fact that it's against his concept

No wonder he got identity crises n shit, man. Who the hell is he? Is he all the superficial surface level shit he mirrors from everyone else? Is he someone capable of sincere love? Who is he?? God damn.

boom boom pow 💥🤯😏 anon here again!! thanks for your thoughtful response to my ask 🥺🫶🏼 honestly, i could do a whole analysis on your characters bc they’re so complex and real. and speaking of your characters … I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY HATE ON OUR OC!!!😡 maybe it’s an elder sister thing but i feel for her bearing the weight of the world on her shoulders and trying to do right. at the end of the day, she doesn’t owe anyone anything but i completely understand why she’d feel indebted to the jeons. how do you pay back someone who essentially altered your path in life and continued to support you? she sacrificed so much of her time and health at the company … she deserves to finally pursue other things outside of the internal guilt/debt she has tied to the jeons.

try putting yourself in her shoes … she initially had no experience in the corporate world, got the internship, got mistreated by her first manager, then switched over as hoseok’s assistant. do you know how stressful it is to jump into your role let alone multiple new roles at your job (possibly with little training or mentors)? then jk comes into the picture and he was an awful boss to her initially and she experienced so much imposter syndrome despite being with the company for over 8 years! yet every time there was a change or hurdle, oc persevered and adapted. she is always in survival mode — being in that constant state is exhausting and demoralizing. she did what she had to in order to make it through the next day. so no, she is not weak or stupid. 😡

i can see how some people are frustrated at the current state of chap 11, but that’s the beauty of drama in writing. characters aren’t going to be perfect. it gives us readers the opportunity to marinate on the intricacies of fictional characters going through life similar or completely different to ours. thanks for creating that world and these special characters, mimi 💕

And her being on survival mode is true!! This is a woman who's trying to better her life and give back to her mother. She put her all in a job that she doesn't rly know much of who she is and what she likes outside of it. This is a constant thought she has, which contributes to her doubting JK bc even she doesn't know what she's like outside of a role she's had for years. Work is such a big part of our identity and she's just experiencing that even more strongly, especially since she also doesn't have any passions outside of it.

Also, when I write my characters, I make sure they're flawed. Not toxic, but flawed. They're not out here intentionally hurting people they care about or self-sabotaging for the sake of it. There's always something underneath, and they don't change in an instant.

And I also do hope that despite this being fanction, somehow you guys get to relate to them somehow in thought or feeling or approach. Some have shared that it's allowed them to reflect on themselves and that's amazing! Pls know that I see you! 🥹🥹

I love the way you drew that izuru doodle! I always thought Izuru in the anime looked too... not like he was a science experiment, but your Izuru just looks so much more realistic and it's heartbreaking but Izuru's existence is heartbreaking so. Anyway

I don't rly know anything about him, BUT i thought a lot about the deets of the whole talent thing, even talked to my rly smart friend about it

So like. We know he's constantly bored because he's so insanely capable and smart that nothing is any kind of challenge and therefore illicits no reaction. Also it's very possible that his brain just got messed with way too hard and it ruined the emotions part, one way or another (like hyper-dysthemic depression, idk if that's the word they still use but let's say I'm familiar with it).

I figure that, since nothing is a challenge, he doesn't even need to focus his talents, meaning it's either constantly running like a million computer programmes, or he just falls into the appropriate talent without needing to think about it- instinct basically, or rather, forcefully carved brain-paths.

Now bear with me I'm not a native english speaker. So when you do something often, and it works for you somehow, it opens a pathway in your brain to make it easier to access this action or thought, like sheep walking the path path over and over until it's a little grooved road. This is something people with talents of action (fighter, runner, programmer etc) definitely made in themselves, but it got artificially pressed into Izuru. So, he has these deep brain grooves that he effortlessly falls into when appropriate, because it's what all his brains are used to doing. It's extra effortless because he doesn't really care what it is, how it works, as long as it just does. His reactions might therefore be, creepily accurate in every situation, or completely inappropriate. Someone hugs him and he gives a great hug back because that's just what his body does, even if there's no emotion in it, because he's an Ultimate Babysitter or something. Or, someone hugs him and he breaks their arms, because his Ultimate Assassin talent kicked in and he just didn't care / try / have time to get out of that brain groove. And like, why would he? It worked then, it works now.

This is also, I want to interpret, somewhat why hes so GOSH darn bored. He got so good at protecting himself from all the pain and confusion that he just cut it all off entirely; VERY common trauma response. Some of it is definitely also the surgeries and the absolutely cacophony in his brain and his hyper-understanding- that's what keeps it up- but what started it might've just been a plain and simple coping mechanism. Also feels like that's why Hajime can come back fully; a) he decided to and he's a very wilful guy and his power is being human and I love him so he just did it, b) he was able to get out of that deep deep groove, feel his entire spectrum of emotions again and activate those pathways, and is once again able to kind of access them. It'll take time and effort to get to where he was, but it's happening! There's... dare I say.... hope?

Sidenote this is all based on / inspired by my experiences with depression (as a symptom or the whole thing idk) of the active-but-emotionally-dead variant, not nearly as serious as brain surgery fuckups but nonetheless sth I can connect. Just now realized I might be more invested in this than I thought.

This one is moreso Haji-zuru, but I imagine that he'd be both very easily bored and would often just peace out in his head bc nothing is fun (should not be left alone for too long bc he'll get too deep into his blank stasis), while ALSO chasing any real emotion ferociously, just like, honing in on anything that catches his feels. Which can be nice! Feelings are somehow novel and familiar to him. But also not nice because sometimes, the feeling is a bad one. Just because it makes you feel something doesn't mean that it's good for you and others.

Also the reflexes and such. Might be a hard habit to break.

Sidenote I generally err on the nurture side of philosophy and do not understand the talent thing. Everyone is memories, memories and thoughts are basically ALL we are, how can Izuru have the active parts of the memories only and nothing else. How can he be The Ultimate Babysitter without actually taking any of that in?? He can do the actions but not access anything that shapes them and that's honestly an interesting concept. Boggles the mind. No wonder he's fucked up he's fucking me up.

listening to homestuck made this world is so fuckin weird. like it's very good. also

idk rn they're talkin a lot abt hussies author commentary in the books and where I'm at there's a lotta talk between michael and cmrn abt authorial responsibility and how hussie takes responsibility for the work when it's convenient for them (This Was My Idea Wasn't It Good) and when it isn't they're like These Characters Are Just People You Can't Control (But Also I Manipulate The Characters Like A God And Put Them Through Trials For Them To Grow)

it's very interesting uhh engaging with this work as a fictive when so much of the conversation is highlighting that These Characters Are Not Real, Andrew Hussie Wrote Them On Purpose

it often feels like me and dave homestuck are just two different daves and he feels super real to me sometimes. like he's just another guy i could've seen in the time tunnels or whatever (obviously my exomemories did not happen. i know this)

but yeah it's ALSO true that Andrew Hussie Wrote These Characters On Purpose and these guys live in hussies mind and were manipulated by them like playdoh onto the webbed page

AND as cmrn said in episode 5 pt 2 "homestuck changes as the audience changes." this world and therefore the people in it are a living breathing thing with Andrew Hussie and the homestuck team and an Entire Readership breathing life into it yknow

and even now there's such a huge community around it keeping it alive even after the homestuck renaissance in 2019 and after hussie kind of abandons the postcanon stuff

idk ig i don't rly have a point here im just thinking. it's sure something seeing all the parts that move to make homestuck exist

Cinema Studies Minor Gets Super Into Analyzing K-Pop Videos 2.1

Disclaimer: I'm still a student, no where near an expert, I will be wrong in some technical aspects. Also my interpretations are my opinion which means you may disagree and that's okay. Awesome even! Just be normal about it fr. This is also very out of order bc that's how my brain works. Also I am but a baby loretiny, which means my interpretations are shaky at best compared to what's been established. But the lore is confusing anyway so....

Why Not Film?

I mean like filming on film stock. Because there is a film grain/noise... (overlay? mask? idk man i'm not an editor I forgot my terms) texture to parts of the video that I think is supposed to evoke the idea of a security camera (I would have LOVED some high-angle shots to drive this home but oh well) BUT could also just be representing that it's old/in the past because it is also in black and white.

the texture is especially evident on San's face. I think they just put a noise filter over this part, which creates grain that you'd find on old film

So why not just film on film stock? It's expensive and cumbersome my guy. they filmed this between schedules like.... digital editing and stuff is just so much easier.

Which leads me to the next section:

K-Pop's Obsession with Wong Kar-Wai

STEP PRINTING!!!! 8/10FPS!!!!! STREAKS!!!! WE! LOVE! IT!

I fucking love this effect which WKW first did by filming (on stock) at 8 frames per second (fps) and then repeating the same frame 3 times to create that streakiness. Filming at a low frame rate then playing it at a higher one (usually 24 fps, which I'm guessing is also what they used for this trailer, 24-32(ish) fps is the cinematic standard) creates fast motion. This process is called step-printing.

The subject(s) would stay still/ move very slowly while filming to give the effect that everything is moving fast around them while they're normal speed. Super cool, gives sense that time is passing around them and/or isolation from others, which is what I think is intended here since HJ and the teezers are isolated from society as they're trying to fight against the government. sweet sweet storytelling through style. OBSESSED!

But also: K-Pop in general is OBSESSED with WKW's style. I will make a list of MVs that rep that eventually, but off the top my head, Mamamoo's mv for wind flower is inspired by Fallen Angels. The color grading, cinematography, the scene references etc.

Ateez and Metropolis

Now for something completely different: Before I get into it I really want to emphasize how fucking instrumental cinema was in globalization, because when cinema first became an industry it TRAVELED like TRAVELED. and resulted in a mix of styles since the fucking like 1920s. AMAZING

Okay so speaking of 1920s, let's get into IT! German Expressionism was a film movement that was born out of post-WW1 Germany and society's need to express (ha) the horrors of war they went through and since hyperinflation fucked up the economy so much, film companies were like "spend whatever" and blew budget on super elaborate film sets and facilities.

Expressionism is focused on the physical and really emphasizing features and such. It's hyperbolic as show in the screen shot from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari:

The subject's face is deepened by the make-up and lighting and shows their state of mind, a mindless corpse being controlled by another power (think Master/Puppet, but we don't have time to rly get into post WW1 Ger's anxieties)

It's also hyperbolic, as I said, which sometimes takes form in the sets. Specifically the establishing shots. These would traditionally be miniatures or painted, as they are easy and you can see how they're similar:

1- Metropolis & 2- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Notice anything? The lines maybe? Perspective? Symmetry? These are all qualities seen in German Expressionism which I will get into in a momement but first. Let me explain why I use Metropolis as an example. In short, they already referenced it in Guerrilla:

ok so idk about Magnum Opus but . you can hear it in the silence is probably the most personal fic i have ever written and the closest to a magnum opus i’ll ever get bc 1. i relate so deeply to mike wheeler as is and this was kind of how i interpreted his struggle w his identity and coming into himself just as a teenager navigating that weird place between high school and college and figuring out your interests and who u are,, and 2. full disclosure bc we’re all Friends here i Did write this fic right after a long distance relationship ended earlier in the summer which definitely influenced my decision to write it in the first place and 3. idk! there were so many aspects of this fic that were just me projecting, like mike getting the older sister mentor figure he deserves (i love nancy but she is Not the greatest older sister ok) and learning to take his time w things when you feel like u dont have enough of it,, anyways i would say this fic is probably my Favorite ive written ! it’s rly hard for me to reread my works but this one ive read back a few times and i actually. enjoy it?

i might be hoping about this is also rly special to me because IDK i just want what they have in this fic so bad dsdfjsdfj like. tender intimacy w someone who knows u better than u know urself! never having to feel like a burden to someone who loves u because they r happy to take care of u even when u can’t do the same,, idk i just think will byers deserves everything good in the world, and i really liked exploring his relationship to illness/his past trauma in this fic, especially since it was my first time writing established relationship! i Did have to step away from my laptop multiple times while writing this to scream into my pillow (literally im not exaggerating guys) because it was just so soft! and i felt so Lonely! anyways this is also a very special fic to me ik im literally the one who wrote it but GODDAMN i made myself sad.
