Abraham Levi and the creation of the doors of time

(This is a translated and extended version of a couple of posts I published about this topic some time ago @asongofstarkandtargaryen )

I was thinking about other issues related to Emdt, and then some things began to occur to me about Abraham Levi and how he came to put these doors into operation and the sources from which you may have been inspired or taken ideas for his work in relation to the gates and time travel.

Isabella: What do you want from me, Abraham?

Now we see Abraham Levi (a man in his 60s, thin, weak in appearance, but with a firm voice)

Levi: Protection for my family. In exchange I offer you the work to which I have dedicated my whole life… The Book of Doors…

Levi shows him the book. Isabel looks at him strangely.

Levi: Part of it has been burned. I saved it from the synagogue fire.

She turns the pages carefully… Only sees diagrams, drawings…

Isabella: I only see doodles and numbers.

Levi: They are keys to the Doors of Time. With them you can travel in time.

Isabella: (Smiles) That's impossible.

Levi: It's not. I myself have traveled to the day that King Alfonso inaugurated the Toledo School of Translators. I also went to my own past to see my mother's joy when she brought me into the world.

Isabella: Do you expect me to believe in those fantasies?

Levi sighs deeply: he must give definitive proof

We see Isabel as a girl (9 years old) saddened with a wound on her hand next to a lady-in-waiting and a guard… An old man (the same Levi with the same age as in the previous sequence), applies an ointment to her hand .

Off Levi: …he cured your hand with an ointment made from the traitor's root.

Isabella looks at the face of the old man who helps her… the same one she has now, many years later, in front of her

Isabella: It was you! But… you were the same age you are today and 30 years have passed. That... that's magic!

Levi: Science that is ahead of its time is always called magic. (Points to the book) I offer you to be the queen of Time. Will you protect my family?

Location

A first point that I would like to comment on is the possible location of the place where Abraham kept his book.

Abraham Levi is a rabbi from the city of Toledo, and he himself says that the book was in the synagogue.

That is to say, it is a specific one, and due to the dates, taking into account that the mission of the episode 1×04 Una negociación a tiempo takes place in the year 1491 and is located in Toledo, since it has practically all the ballots that Abraham was a rabbi of the synagogue del Tránsito, also known as the synagogue of Samuel ha Levi. (The first gif shows one part of the synagogue)

Today the synagogue houses the Sephardic Museum, a museum about Jewish history of the Iberian peninsula.

(Extra: In the intro of the 1-3th seasons, there's a moment in which there are several keys, and the most common thought is that there are keys in the intro because of the aesthetic of the timedoors, but they haven't any locks and one of my thoughts is that they're a reference of the tale of the keys of the Jews who were expelled in 1492. It's said that they took the keys of their houses with them and kept them generation after generation, hoping to one day return and open the locks of their old homes.)

The fact is that the origin of this synagogue dates back to the middle of the 14th century, when Samuel Ha Levi Abulafia (Úbeda, Jaén, Andalusia, 1320-Sevilla, Andalusia, 1360), who was treasurer and counselor of Peter I (Burgos, Castile and Leon, August 30, 1334-Montiel, Ciudad Real, Castile-La Mancha, March 23, 1369), ordered to build it, presumably as a private synagogue of his palace, where currently the House-Museum of El Greco, the painter Doménikos Theotokópoulos (Herakleion, Crete, October 1, 1541-Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, April 7, 1614) is located. Perhaps it could be that Abraham was a relative or descendant of Samuel, so it could make sense that Abraham was in the synagogue that his ancestor had built.

I have focused a lot on the Tránsito synagogue, but it is not the only one in the city, it is usually estimated that there were about 10 synagogues in the city during the Middle Ages, of which some only a few remains remain today, and another that is still standing, which is the synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, also known as the Greater Synagogue, probably built in the 12th century. Unfortunately, as a result of the pogrom of 1391 that the Jewish quarters of some of the main cities of the peninsula suffered, most of the synagogues are either destroyed due to the assaults and popular revolts against the Jewish quarters or are seized by the Catholic Church, as this was the case of the synagogue of Santa María la Blanca.

Subsequently, the only synagogue that was officially preserved as such until the end of the 15th century was the Tránsito synagogue, I suppose that it was preserved that way because it was "private". In the year 1492, the synagogue was requisitioned by Isabella I (Madrigal de las Altas Torres, Ávila, Castile and Leon, April 22, 1451-Medina del Campo, Valladolid, Castile and Leon, November 26, 1504) and Ferdinand II (Sos del Rey Católico, Zaragoza, Aragon, March 10, 1452-Madrigalejo, Cáceres, Extremadura, January 23, 1516) and handed it over to the Order of Calatrava.

Within the known history of the Tránsito synagogue, I don't remember if there was a concrete tale of a fire, although it could be that it was damaged as a result of an assault on the Jewish quarter.

Inspirations and origins of the doors

One of the things that mentions Abraham is the School of Translators of Toledo, it is thought that probably the antecedent of this group was created in the 12th century by the archbishop of Toledo, Raimundo de Sauvetât, but it would not be organized as a true institution until the 13th century during the reign of Alfonso X the Wise (or the Astrologist, for his passion and wide knowledge about astrology) (Toledo, November 23, 1221-Sevilla, April 4, 1284), in which Jews, Muslims and Christians worked, in charge of translating into different languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Latin, old Spanish...) the almost lost works of the great Greek thinkers at that time or the translations of some Muslim intellectuals such as Averroes (Córdoba, Al-Andalus, Almoravid Empire, April 14, 1126–Marrakech, Almohad Empire, December 17, 1198) and Avicenia (Bukhara, Great Khorasan, Iran, c. 980-Hamadan, Iran, 1037) of other ancient Greek treatises. And in general they work on medicine, mathematics, astrology, astronomy, philosophy, alchemy, magic and even instruction books for games such as chess, tables and dice.

The thing is, this which has to do with the theme of Abraham and the gates?

One of the things I was thinking about Abraham and the School of Translators in relation to the creation of the gates is that perhaps Abraham had at some point access to some of the texts translated by the school, some treatise related to astrology, philosophy or magic probably, and take ideas that may have been crucial in developing what the doors would be.

Some of them are the Astromagic Book and the Picatrix, which in short, in what they extended was in knowledge of astrology and philosophy, which are used in magic that can be obtained and used by the magician thanks to the astral power of the stars and the planets.

There are several more treatises and books, but it is true that the Picatrix is considered a very important work within these magic manuals of the time, its original name is Ghayat al-hakim, which can be translated as the goal or the end of the wise, and was probably written in the 10th or 11th century by the mathematician, alchemist, astronomist and astrologist Maslama Ibn Ahmad al-Mayriti (or al-Magriti) (Madrid,950-Cordoba, Andalusia, 1007), the latter being interpreted as "the Madrilenian", author of the Treaty for building astrolabes and other mathematical and astronomical calculations, and he was the astrology counselor of al-Manṣūr/ Almanzor "the Victorious" (castle of Turrush, Fuentes de Cesna, Granada or Torrox, Málaga, Andalusia, 939-Medinaceli, Soria, Castile and Leon, August 9, 1002), háyib and chancellor of the Caliphate of Córdoba during the rule of Hisham II (Córdoba, June 11, 965 – Córdoba, May 18, 1013)

Fun fact: In 2015 the extrasolar planet Upsilon Andromedae d, located about 44 light years from Earth, in the Andromeda constellation, was renamed as Majriti, in honor of al-Mayriti.

Madrid was founded in 9th century by the emir Muhammad I of Córdoba (Córdoba, 852- Córdoba, 886), who established the first permanent settlement by building a watchtower in the middle valley of the river Guadarrama (the watchtower turn into an alcazar and then in the 18th century was replaced with the current Royal Palace).This watchtower had the function of guarding the passage towards the mountain range of Guadarrama. Madrid was a military site formed by the Medina (from the arabic Madinat, the city, intramural neighborhoods, there are several spanish towns whose name has the word Medina in it: Medina del Campo, Medina de Pomar, Medina de Rioseco, Miño de Medina, Brahojos de Medina, Villaverde de Medina, Medinaceli, Almedina, Medina Sidonia, Medina de las Torres, Mediñá, Medina Azahara...) and the Almudaina (from the Arabic al-mudayna, citadel), Madrid's Cathedral is named after this, the Santa Maria de la Almudena and the woman name Almudena.

Madrid comes from Mayrit/Magrit:

-Mayrit: from the Arabic “Mayra”, which translates as mother or womb, and the suffix “it”, which means place

-Magrit: a hybrid between the Arabic word “Maǧra”, which means channel or water course, and the suffix romance "it", which indicates abundance, thus conforming the meaning of "place abundant in waters"

Its name refers to the abundance of aquifers and the Manzanares River, and since the foundation of the city the Muslims as masters in channeling water, they used various techniques such as the use of the noria, the storage and distribution of water through ditches, canals and pools, and the qanat, or use of groundwater through conduction.

In fact, it's said that the primitive coat of arms of Madrid was formed by a flint that emerged from the water. In addition, it would have had these two sentences: "I was built on water, my walls of fire are" making reference about the abundance of water, on the one hand, and to the walls of the city, made of silex, that produced sparks and fire in contact with projectiles.

And then I look the etymology of La Mancha (Toledo is the capital of Castile-La Mancha) is funny because it's like quite the opposite. I mean there are some rivers like the Tagus, but still it's quite accurate. There are different theories. One would suppose that the toponym "Mancha" would be pronounced in Arabic as Manxa or Al-Mansha, which translates as "land without water", "land of espartos" or "dry land", and another as Manya, translated as "high plain", "plateau" or "elevated place".

About other interesting details is that the first famous person who was born in Madrid was an astronomist and the flag and the coat of arms of the city of Madrid are related with stars. The flag of the community of Madrid is seven stars divided in two lines at the center in a red field, and the COA is a she-bear with an arbutus, surrounded by a blue bordure with seven white stars, both the flag and the COA are reference to the Ursa Minor or Ursa Maior constellation (7 starts, a she-bear). The first coat of arms of Madrid with the bear consisted in a bear in a field with the Ursa Minor constellation on the animal's back and with the North Star on its tail, because the Polaris star and thus the constellation was important for orienteering for several cultures that established in the region since the Carpetans (one of the Celtiberian tribes, their area was called Carpetania, located in the community of Madrid ans some partsof Castile- La Mancha)

Maybe the reason why the headquarters of the ministry are located in Madrid, instead of Toledo, is because it's a tribute of Abraham Levi to al-Mayriti and his Picatrix. At first someone would say that the ministry is located in Madrid, because it's the capital of Spain, it wasn't until 1561 that the city didn't became the capital.

A deltail relared with these theme: The intro of seasons 1-3 begins with a starry night over Madrid. The Almudena cathedral can be seen in the landscape of the city.

Returning to the main theme, I think that the book of doors can be considered another kind of treatise on astromagic, but later than the others and that it has been the work of Abraham when taking references from other books on astromagic, but although in traditional treatises formulas and magical rituals for all kinds of purposes, Abraham focused on the creation of the doors.

Specifically, the formulas to open these connections between two different times and places are mere speculation because the writers have not focused on giving an exact explanation.

As data is that the internal magical scheme of the doors is clearly inspired by the design of a classic element of the cabal, the Tree of Life. Kabbalah is a mystical study and interpretation of sacred texts that peaked during the Middle Ages, twelfth and thirteenth centuries, specifically by authors from the south of France and Spain.

In the tree of life the 10 emanations of God are represented when creating the universe. And that it is suggested that it is also the structure of the microcosm within the human being, and that similarity is what connects it with the rest of the macrocosm and is also divided into various levels according to the four elements: water, fire, earth and air, and levels of Emanation, Creation, Formation and physical world and in three pillars, rigor or severity, balance and mercy. Then also each of the 10 spheres is associated with some attribute of creation, a planet or a celestial body and a number.

In the episode 3×09 El Cisma del tiempo, it is shown what the internal "code" of the doors is, and therefore the scheme is clearly inspired by the Tree of Life of the Kabbalah.

Bringing together the elements of the cabalistic tree with what has already been mentioned with astromagic, I would say that Abraham may have designed the doors based on placing a combination of letters that are equivalent to numbers (such as the kabbalah system), which may be used to indicate the year and the coordinates of the two places that a time gate connects. Perhaps through numerical coordinates as such and a date, or perhaps this is also accompanied by the position of the stars in the connected places and times, as well as perhaps connecting the two different combinations of the location of the stars , would generate some kind of magical reaction or energy that would allow time travel between both points.

Although there are also some questions about how Abraham created all the existing doors considering that from his point of view in the 15th century, a large number of doors would lead to the future, to years that have not yet passed or to places that such Abraham probably could not know under normal conditions, such as the doors that connect a place with some place in America or some other place that in the past was a Spanish colony. It may also be that he was experimenting with the combinations of numbers in the code and resulted in traveling to other parts of the world (like Abraham suddenly appearing in Havana or Cartagena).

Some points regarding the doors that from the point of view of the time of Abraham is that when he created them, perhaps several of them were located in the time of Abraham or before and that as the years have passed, like most of the doors the time is continuous (except for example some that are in a loop), since time has elapsed normally. I say this because of "time is what it is" and you cannot travel to the future beyond the year in which the main Ministry is located, although it is something quite relative.

Another option is that when Levi was experimenting and creating what the doors would be, he wouldn't put limits on how long to go, and he created doors that led to other times after his own.

Another hypotheses about the doors located in America or elsewhere is that perhaps originally they were not located there, but later someone who knew very well the operation and internal codes of the doors, wanted to move several of those doors to other places, to have better access to them or whatever.

Although I suppose that the internal codes are not mastered by everyone, and the only people apart from Abraham that we have heard that work with directly manipulating some characteristic of the doors are the "technicians" of the current ministry who are mentioned a couple of times throughout the series. From what is intuited, they are Ministry workers who handle a kind of digitized collection of the door codes, and manipulate them from a "computerized" method, we suppose that this computerized registry of the doors may have given rise to the temporary error alert system that is seen in 4×00 Antes de que no haya tiempo, or the mobiles with which the ministry workers can call other times, I suppose that the technicians implanted a chip in the phones with a special operating system that is directly connected to the computer registry of the doors.

Grace is a young adult that suffers sleep paralysis disorder. It is weird. Sometimes at 3 am she wakes up unable to move or speak, feeling a huge weight on her body from her toes to her face. This usually lasts for a minute but it feels longer. She is awake but she can’t move her fingers, or even shout for someone to wake her up. It’s random. It doesn’t happen every day, or every year, but when it happens is for a couple of nights. As soon as she has one, the next day fears to fall asleep.

BAT SHIT CRAZY

The Director’s Girlfriend Cut

Grace opens a new browser in the desktop computer at the reception. She types Craigslist, clicks on casual encounters and posts an ad. She giggles as she types “Lamb in search for a lion.” And on the message writes: Looking for a play date for naked twister. No creeps. Hits send and hears a loud motor near by. Then the steps of someone. A biker comes swinging a large gun and wearing a dodgers baseball cap. He asks her: “Where is the slut?” Grace did nothing but answer: “Room 13.” It was the only room occupied. She didn’t know if the woman that check in earlier was his wife, but she wasn’t going to compromise her well-being; after all, he looked like and acted like a temperamental caveman with a huge gun. She just answer the truth: “Room 13.” Grace is smart like that.

The guy who looks like the gang leaders of the Hell Angels, walks to the room abruptly stops at Room 13, lights-up a cigarette and kicks the door down. Sees his wife, a 30 something blonde amazonian woman in four with a 60 year old has been weightlifter. The biker points the gun and says: “Lift this.” The wife whins and says: “Fuck! Why do you have to be so dramatic?”. He responds: “Are you coming home, baby? The biker and his wife and leave the motel and get on the truck and pass by a white 1995 White Marquis.

In the reception Grace is calling 911 as she is counting the money that she just took from the dead guy in room 13. She liked money, easy money, especially the money she can get of silly old creeps.

Grace: “Hi, there is a dead body, in room 13 at the HeartBreak hotel.” Looks up and sees a man all dress in black. He has style, and everything he is wearing seems expensive. Grace tries to hide the cash in the drawer hoping the guy didn’t see it but it was too late, Gary knows how to pay attention.

He is tall and slender, has wrinkles around his eyes and long curly blond hair. She hangs up the phone and asks him: “Are you Gary, the one that booked the meeting room for this weekend?”. The Heartbreak motel had a quasi “convention center”. In reality it used to be the cafeteria but it never had any clients. No one was at that motel to have a coffee and a club sandwich. The regular clients were close to broke families that wanted to take their kids to Disneyland but couldn’t afford it. And trailer drivers that had long routes and needed a rest on their way for deliveries. And of course people that pay the night only to use it for a couple of hours to do “the dirty”.

Gary: “Yes, that’s me (looks at her name tag) Grace. I’m Gary. Looks confused and guesses right: “Did someone died, Grace?”

Grace: “Yes, I just called the police. Your room is ready, it’s the biggest one we have room 23” and hands him the key. Gary was the only guy that called to reserve a room that day and asked about the “convention center.” He need it for a new business that had to do with the oldest profesión but it was going to upload for millions of people to see. You can guess exactly what was he about.

Gary was born a hustler, but word got around when he started ripping his investors, gambling all the money and moving from town to town. Gary had just enough money to start another shady business. Now he wanted to reclute beautiful young ladies and he knew the most beautiful ones ended up in Los Ángeles. Because he was low in funds he booked it in Anaheim, where this story takes place.

Gary grabs the key and starts walking to his room and turned to Grace and asks her: “Are you going to be here for the weekend, Grace?” Gary does that with women that finds attractive saying their name in almost every sentence.

Grace: “Yes, I work here. Like all the time.” She didn’t like that question, judged him already as a creeper like most man. She looks at her screen and notifications from craigslist are still raining. Closes the tab, and hears sirens near by.

Grace: “The police has arrived, I’ll see you later.” And steps out of the reception and she is wearing an almost see throughout summer dress that looked like lingerie. Gary stares at her long legs and decides to go to his room.

Police arrived to heartbreak hotel. Roy, a Native American cop and Laura, a hispanic bombshell murder detective pull out of the car. Laura starts bitching about how tacky is this motel. It has always given her bad vibes with that sign that the hotel had. It was a big ass neon heart bleeding from a dagger in the middle. Laura says to Roy: “This should be our victim, that sign, why are people so cringe?” Roy doesn’t say anything mostly because he is a regular client that loved the company of lady’s of the night. As he walk he asked to himself if the hot girl was still working there. He had a crush on Grace, like everyone else.

Grace comes out of the reception and says: “The body is in Room 13.”

Chapter 1

Grace is one of those characters that grew up in a foster home. Her foster father had a scar near his left eye, probably from ‘the botched abortion his mom try to have’ she once said to a friend as she gestured with her hand fashioning as a hook. Her foster father, Juan, was an hispanic immigrant who married Violet. They meet years ago on vacation trip to Mazatlán Mexico. Juan was only eighteen, and Violet 31. The vacation never ended, two months later he was already married and living in Henderson, Nevada.

Juan always dreamt of being a father. and they didn’t have to be his own.

Grace has three foster siblings: Rose, Mary and Jesus.

CHAPTER 2

Gary was an odd duck. if one would allow their thoughts to run wild and imagine someone that deserve everything he got, that was Gary. Gary was mental, and knew how to make money. Growing up under the care of Lucia, an italian opera signer that gave up her life in the Opera to raise an angel. She enroll herself community college to take an Early Childhood Education Diploma, so she make her son a king. Dale, the father, was an excellent accountant for the jews in Houston, Texas. He knew how to work those books like nobody else. His affection for Gary was about doing things together, teaching him how to change a tire, took him on Sundays to play tennis, and talk about numbers and how to budget and always have your shit together for tax season. Dale had it togheter and also starting going to agnostic group meetings to see who was really who? And how can we make some business about it.

Gary, as he holds his raquet on his left hand preparing to start the game asks his father: “how many times i have to beat you old man?” Dale answers; “Until you learn how to lo lose.” Gary whispered: “Never.” and dubbed on the air as if he was an action hero. Gary loved his old man, he taught him the most brilliant thing in the world: Critical thought and how to make money with it. It was brilliant. Explain the ABCs Always Be closing, in the age of consumption and capitalism. Life is life that: ready, set, play, match, love. Gary also grew up watching Scarface on tv. No matter at what time he turn on the tv and it was playing he had to watch it. Gary only called one women by “baby”and that was Michel Pfeiffer. Gary stares a you and says to tv screen: “baby, you are a doll.”

There was no internet back on Gary’s young days, so everyone had toys. Gary grew up when the first atari went to market. He also had a dirt bike and went to Karate Clases, he got as far as brown belt, but then in a twist with destiny meet his first love. Her name was Gabriela. He didn’t not know how to approach it so he shower her with gifts. The first day he saw her was outside of a 7eleven, with her friends having liters of waters and chewing gum.” He asked his friends that were on the car with him if someone knew her and one answered: “Yes, she is my cousin.” Gary went all out and sent her a glove-roses-teddy bear arrangement with hand written invitation to meet for romantic purposes. That was it, now Gary had to make money to show Gabriela a good time.

Gary graduated as an Arquitect at 26. Before he graduated he use to party all the time. To fund his lifestyle he was selling on the down low. Anything you want. If this story was being told in todays era the job is like a door dash, but his deliveries included: buzz, smokes, cigarettes and the contacts of the most mortally corrupt girls in town. Soon those kinds of favors started getting more expensive and dangerous. Gary was taking advantage of all the tools the world with internet had to offer. He was making a killing.

Chapter 3

Juan did not met Grace through the foster system. One day when driving with his first wife, Violet saw a 17 year old girl walking on the road. Violet looks at Juan and tells him: “Poor angel, we have to help her.” Violet was older than Juan, and missed the baby train by choice. She is a believer, and whispers her own prayers to her guardian angel. Touches her heart pendant and asks Juan: Can we keep her?”

On the way to the police station Juan asks Grace questions like: “Are you lost?” Grace answers: “no, I escaped” Juan: “Where you in danger? What happened?” Grace looks through the window of the car and told Juan a story of being abducted by some dark creatures. That she was running away from her home because she came from an abusive household, she was an orphan adopted by a crazy couple of christians.

Juan thought that the girl was in that age that would entertain those kinds of thoughts while being under the influence. Maybe she just lost her friends in a rave and wonder off. Juan told Violet and Grace, that maybe today wasn’t the day they will ask help from the authorities. “Most of the time… they only make things worse.” Juan sighs as he makes a turn.

It is so creepy that Meyer made nearly all of her main characters forever underaged. I don't think that she's a predator and it's pretty clear (IMHO) that Meyer idolizes youth. But it's just so gross that Nessie will always look "18, 20" or that most of the Cullens are stuck emotionally and physically in their teens or that the Pack LOOKS like they're in their twenties but most of them are in their teens. Would it really be THAT different if they were all solidly in their 20s/30s? Really?

I would sort of get it if she set out to write a YA novel, in that to be in that genre you need to be writing about people in that age group. But she has said before she was just writing it for herself, and her original sequel (Forever Dawn, which served as the basis for Breaking Dawn eventually) wasn't considered YA enough because it was about getting married and having a child. So she wasn't writing this, at first anyway, as a YA story and so wouldn't have been limited with the ages. New Moon and Eclipse WERE written with a YA audience in mind, though, which might explain some of the wolf pack ages (but doesn't explain them appearing to age up to 25 which is not YA).

I do think it has a lot to do with SM nearing 30 when she started writing it. With that milestone birthday looming over her, she might have been preoccupied with the idea of being young and beautiful forever, and so we get a lot of vampires stuck forever under the age of 30. Our "parent" vampires are . . . 23 and 26. The oldest female vampire given an age in the guide is Mary, who is . . . 28. 28 is our elderly lady vampire guys. And don't get me wrong, I have sympathy for SM on that front. Society really, REALLY hammers home this terrible idea that woman need to be young to be desirable/important/interesting and it's awful. I think we've all felt that pressure. You look at Hollywood and these male actors in their 40s, 50s, 60s, are still considered sexy and are still leading men but any woman over the age of 30 is playing a Mom and someone over 40 is a Grandma. Things might be starting to get a little better on this front, but I can understand the cultural forces that might have put SM in that mindset. Maybe she was fantasizing about the glory days of high school, I don't know.

Personally, I think the story would have worked better for me if everyone were a bit older. I KNOW the intention is that E/B are true love and Bella knows exactly what she wants and what she's doing, I know that is the Authorial Intent. It's, um, pretty clear. But there was always a part of me that was like "okay but she's in high school how COULD she know?" "she's never had another relationship are we SURE?" etc. If she had been a bit older, had seen a bit more of the world, I might have been able to buy into this premise a little bit better.

And there was some comment SM made after BD when people didn't like it, where she was saying that like maybe the teenage fans didn't get it, but the mom fans get it because there was nothing sexier than seeing your husband become a father to your kids or something to that extent and like, sure, but he's physically SEVENTEEN. It's so strange to conceptualize Edward Cullen, eternateen, as a--forgive the expression--as a DILF. Which seems to be what she was going for! And again would have worked so much better if he and Bella were older!

Honestly even setting it in college rather than high school would fix so many of the problems. Bella's a junior in college and took a semester abroad and has seen more of the world and like then maybe I would be able to more easily buy into the idea that she is 100% certain about eternity with a guy she literally just met (remember, she thought Prom was her ritual turning into a vampire and was totally on board with it, when they had been dating for like, a month? Two?). And Edward as the mature, sexy husband and father works better if he's not literally 17-years-old.

The Chop Chop Lady

Sometime in the late ‘50s or early ‘60s, Lucila Tolentino Lalu left her hometown of Candaba, Pampanga, to try her luck in Manila. She initially worked as a waitress at a small bar and apparently, she was really good with money. Her hard-earned money, which she saved quite wisely, was enough to start several ventures—Lucy’s House of Beauty, a salon on Mayhaligue St. and Pagoda, which is a restaurant and cocktail lounge / nightclub located along Rizal Avenue in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

During this time, Lucila also met Aniano de Vera, a police officer who was married, but who nevertheless fell in love with her. Soon, the two began living together in a common-law marriage, and their union was blessed with a child. Like any career woman, Lucila was adeptly juggling her businesses and family life at 28 years old.

Then one summer day in 1967, Lucila disappeared. None of the old newspaper clippings mentioned whether Lucila’s family members or friends reported her missing.

On May 28, police officers found human body parts: a woman’s pair of legs, cleanly cut in four pieces, wrapped with a newspaper dated May 14th. The legs were found in a garbage can along Malabon St. not far from Pagoda. The garbage collector who found the parts said that they were cold to the touch, as if they had come from the freezer. He also noted that the toes were well-pedicured, like they belonged to someone well-to-do.

At first, police officers and the media thought they may match the badly decomposed, severed hand that had been found just a few days earlier in front of a barber shop along Recto Avenue. However, this theory was discarded after checking the decomposition rates on both body parts.

Almost a day later, a torso with arms were found along EDSA, near Guadalupe Bridge. These parts were also wrapped in newspaper, this time dated May 23. The body was identified to be Lucila’s, whose fingerprints were on file when she applied for a police clearance, back when she had just arrived in Manila.

Homicide investigators noted that whoever killed Lucila was someone skilled with the knife, or have some sort of medical knowledge since the parts were expertly cut. In initial reports, they also mentioned that, since the body parts were frozen and scattered in different parts of the city, they were looking for someone with an access to a huge freezer and an automobile.

Several suspects were rounded up, most of them Lucila’s lovers. First was Florante Relos, a 19-year-old waiter at the Pagoda whom Lucila had supported. However, Florante was drinking with his friends during the time of the crime and he was released. He also did not have any motive to kill Lucila, the person who was both his lover and provider. She even rented out a “love nest” in Cubao where he could stay. However, the cashier at Pagoda also said that Lucila had already broken up with Florante. During the night of the murder, she also told Florante and his friends that Lucila may be at the beauty parlor if they wanted to see her. Some witnesses even said they saw her being dragged by Florante and his friends into a taxi in front of the parlor. These accounts were never verified.

The second suspect was Aniano, Lucila’s common-law husband for seven years. Many already knew that they were having problems. Their six-year-old child had been staying at Lucila’s mother in Caloocan. Aniano was also prone to fits of anger and jealousy, having fired off his service gun three times in Lucila’s Pagoda and Beauty Parlor, the month before she disappeared.

The night of her disappearance, Aniano claimed to have had dinner with her in the beauty parlor at about 6:30 p.m. He left immediately after. Some witnesses, including some of Lucila’s relatives, said that around the time Aniano left, they even saw her in the salon, sleeping. However, this contradicts Florante’s earlier testimony that he and Lucila had met, around 7:30 the same night, in another cocktail lounge on Rizal Avenue.

There was another suspect, an executive of a printing firm who was also said to be Lucila’s lover. He was never named in any of the reports, only that he was suspected because of a cardboard material used in wrapping newsprints that was found under the torso of Lucila. This mystery man seemed to have an alibi for the night and this angle wasn’t explored any further.

The last suspect was someone who came forward due to his “guilty conscience”: a 28-year-old dentistry student, Jose Luis Santiano. It was June 15, 1967 when news broke out that a “handsome young man” son of a retired PC colonel, married and father of five, confessed in his own handwritten statement that he experienced a “mental blackout” but remember strangling Lucila to her death. Jose Luis was also one of Lucila’s lovers and was one of the boarders of the spare rooms in her parlor.

In his initial testimony, he said that Lucila had tried to seduce him, and that when he refused, she threatened to create a scandal. This was when Jose Luis lost his mind and killed her. In his testimony, he even mentioned disposing of the head in Diliman, Quezon City and carrying parts of the body in paper bags and boxes while commuting in taxis and jeepneys. Police later found traces of dried blood underneath Jose Luis’ bed where he said he kept the body before disposing of it. It was never mentioned in old news reports if the head was ever found. Three days later, Jose Luis was singing a different tune. He retracted his earlier statement, saying he wasn’t the murderer but just an “unwilling witness” to the murder which was in fact committed by three men. While the murder did happen in the mezzanine of the parlor where Jose Luis’ room was, he said that two men killed Lucila while another man held him hostage while pointing a gun at him. A fourth man appeared the following morning and planted evidence, the blood, in his room. Over the next few days, he allegedly also received notes, reminding him to keep silent.

The police insisted that Jose Luis did it, especially since they found a hammer with bloodstains in the mezzanine, as well as the knife and razors in his initial testimony. They claimed that he was merely following his lawyer’s suggestion of retracting his statement. When Jose Luis was being held by the NBI, they also received bomb threats to let the murder suspect go. He was released later on and some even say that Jose Luis is still alive and living abroad.

Without any new leads, the investigators reached a dead end and the case remains unsolved.

Two Gods and A Vampire

The silence was beyond nerve wrecking, the team of righteous heroes sat unmoving in a judgmental stupor. You were sure their minds were working overtime trying to piece together the many chips being tossed about in the living area by a specific pain in the ass Norse god. You didn’t know what to say but you needed to figure something out, and considering you were sure everything in the compound was being recorded and monitored, it needed to be believable.

“Not that it hasn’t been explained before, but I was used as a stand-in for their mutated super soldier serum remake that was botched. I was practically dead when they took me from that village, no thanks to you,” The venom in your voice made it clear to Loki that he was to blame for leaving you there for the people that were after him. He didn’t know that it wasn’t Hydra, or that they weren’t the ones to revive you but it was close enough to the truth, you had been used by Hydra but that didn’t happen until the 60’s. The partial truth didn’t register in his mind as a lie, he felt genuinely horrible at leaving you to those pests experiments. You hoped it was enough to take the pressure off of you as you asked the team a question, trying to change the topic of conversation.

“Why is Friday offline, and what’s with the no lights? I thought I was walking into a trap or something,” you couldn’t help but wonder what the reasoning behind it was.

“Oh, point break over there “accidentally” shot out our electric box by beaming down too close to the compound. Friday is undergoing some maintenance so this doesn’t happen again,” Stark answers while glaring at Thor for his transgression. That calms your nerves a bit, they weren’t trying to trap you and they didn’t suspect anything.

Yet. Your subconscious held the nagging suspicion that sooner rather than later you were gonna be forced to show them your hand.

You’d leave without a trace before revealing yourself to them, no need to let them in on the darker avenues of the afterlife. That would be a problem for another day though. Shrugging off your leather jacket, you take your leave and head to your room to shower and relax. Not bothering to listen to the continuing conversation taking place between the team and the two gods, you start your after battle self care routine feeling less nervous now that you were away from Loki.

You didn’t know what it was about the god that had you so frazzled. He left you for dead in that small village, not bothering to at the very least bury you properly. The sword had pierced close to your heart, not directly through it, but that didn’t matter. You still bled out on the muddy path that led to the town's hermit who just happened to be a vampire. An extremely old and disciplined vampire that took pity in his cold heart for a young maiden bleeding out next to horse shit. One blood transfer later and you were waking up on a bed of furs, the icy cold venom had flooded your body leaving you frozen in time in your 23 year old body. You could barely remember the actual date but you placed your turning around the early 1800s, losing track and not bothering to care enough to write it down. Besides, the last thing you needed was to have someone snoop and find out you were older than the big bad criminal organization Hydra. Unaware of the conversation taking place across the compound, you settle into your routine.

“Are you certain about this brother? Lady Y/N may be older than she appears but you're saying she's in her 200’s,” Thor whispers to Loki in Asgardian as the team talks amongst themselves.

“240 give or take and I am certain, Thor. There’s something very different about her but I’m quite positive she is the same maiden that helped me escape those wretched trials. Time has not touched her in the slightest,” Loki whispers back in Asgardian as well, so even if one of the mortals hears them speak they won’t understand.

“Should I-,”

“Don’t say a word to Odin, we don’t know what she is for sure but even you know he would gladly collect her like his precious relics and bend her to do his bidding,” Loki cuts Thor off, the hatred for Odin seeping into his voice unwillingly. Thor only nods to convey he understands, not wanting to upset his brother further.

Loki continues after a moment of silence, ”I’ll consult someone that may have the answers we seek if I cannot produce them without help,” Thor looks confused for a moment until Loki speaks again, “I have been missing the scenery in New Orleans of late.”

As the gods continue to speak, Natasha listens very carefully while maintaining conversation with Clint about his and Kate’s escapades the other night while she was on a mission. Truthfully, she had always had a sneaking suspicion that y/n wasn’t telling the full truth about her past but that was her preference and she couldn’t fault her for that. However, if it was true what Loki was saying, the team needed to know who she was, no exemptions.

Looking at her phone while still listening to both conversations, she reserved a hotel room in New Orleans for the following day so she could see what Loki would find out. Secrets got people killed, a lesson Natasha had learned the hard way. She also knew secrets kept people safe but the situations varied. This was one of those times where she wanted to determine the outcome before it became a bigger issue, one that couldn’t be settled with a simple explanation.

“Hey Clint, mind doing me a favor?” Nat asks with a small smile. It was time she cashed in a couple of favors.

Gracie Made All Of Annette's Dresses

Alright, let's get started!

So, I had been thinking about this for a while and I was like: Why not have Gracie learn sewing? Considering she's lived through the 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s, it wouldn't be ridiculous thing to pick up maybe a lesser known talent. So, I got to thinking of narratives:

Gracie is a mostly forward person, but even as she grew up, she had a divided taste in fashion, especially in the 80s. On one hand, she loved the vibrant neon colors and fabric that came with the new decade, but sometimes the mother in her turned her head from the more newer designs. Gracie guessed the girl from the 50s inside her preferred more classic and somewhat conservative looks to what else was being worn nowadays [80s]. Just don't get her started on two-piece bikinis! (It was one thing having the top part as a mermaid, where there was nothing to show from the waist below, but the bottom part was something she still needed getting used to.)

But that didn't mean she didn't enjoy new ideas! Working in a restaurant as a manager paid the bills but she enjoyed working on her artwork most of all (tied with spending time with her daughter, Annette.)

However, she wasn't blind. Her daughter was entering her teen years and for the curly, blonde hair she inherited from her father, Annette - to the dimples, high cheekbones, and rose cheeks - got all the beauty from Gracie, which made both of them head-turners, unfortunately.

However, unlike her mother's reservations, Annette was immersed in the 80s trends of big hair, scrunchies, leg warmers, fingerless gloves, leotards , oversized shirts, plastic bangles, large funky earrings in neon shades, mesh accents, fanny packs and pearl necklaces (probably the only thing in regards to accessory Gracie appreciated!)

Gracie HATED it all! The 80s was very materialistic and all about flaunting wealth and who payed the price for all these fancy and designer clothes!? Where did the pearls come from? How much labor went into sewing a shopping out clothes to stores? What about the work laborers and the excessive need to mass-produce at fast rates? What happened to quality over quantity!?

(Annette got these lectures every time she asked for something out of a catalog and just beared with it.)

In some ways, it was lucky enough that Gracie preferred handcrafted quality items, with the occasional vintage jewelry found in second-rate stores and market stalls. She enjoyed the classics, but there was something divine in wearing something handmade. Back when her husband was alive and she lived on the military base with him, she had told this to a friend and fellow army wife one day, who reckoned her an "Old Soul" and suggested she take up sewing if she disliked name-brand clothes so much. At the time, she never considered it, but it wasn't a foreign concept. She grew up in a well-to-do family and her mother always made her dresses for special occasions. From her evening gowns to her school formal, perhaps there was something to it that she could do for her future child. Alas, it wasn't easy, but she had her mother and local wives to help with her exciting projects! Even once she left, she never really stopped making dresses.

If anything, she found it challenging to make dresses to prove to Annette that homemade was better than store brand! And especially bring the 50s to the 80s!

The Debutante Dress (Age 16- 1981)

Ah, the debutante ball. A girl's coming out to society and the elegance of being accepted as a lady - and there was just something about that flowing white, silk dress that Gracie just loved! When she had the first opportunity to be a part of one, it was for charity and her mother convinced her. To be frank, the etiquette lessons were a bore and the only real excitement was the dance lessons. Looking back, those lessons did pay off whenever she had to attend functions with her husband. She and Julia had been selected and their escorts had been Max and Karl (perhaps that was the only reason Julia took fancy to the entire event.) It had been held at the Cloudland Ballroom and been an invigorating event! She danced all night in the gown her mother made for her and she felt like the wind gliding through the air.

So perhaps it was destined that the very ballroom (unaware of its drastic fate) would be danced upon by Gracie's daughter, the very floor where she once danced with her first love and later met and fell in love with her future husband! Annette however wasn't taking being a debutante so well and fought every minute of it. It took time to get her stubborn daughter to get used to the idea and perhaps her hand-sewn dress also helped:

Halloween Costume

This one caused a fight between mother and daughter. See, while Annette wasn't going all-out Disney, she requested a princess dress that would make her stand out. And Gracie did just that, only it mirrored something more traditional with a red cloak when what Annette wanted was something more glamorous. The fight wasn't bad (compared to the ones they'd have in the future) but it did leave Gracie a bit heartbroken and the girls in separate rooms. Eventually, Annette came around and apologized, saying she'll still wear it. (Which she wouldn't regret seeing as a lot of people enjoyed a more realistic take of medieval fantasies!)

First Date

Annette had her first date! Gracie knew that he was taking her out on a beach date (Sugtons Beach) and wanted to express just that. Turns out her date was the one who was commented Annette on her Halloween costume! Annette had nothing to wear and consulted with Gracie again, this time asking if she owned anything and could modernize it. Well...Gracie did have something, but though she herself thought it could have been done better, Annette loved it! [10 points to whoever recognizes such a design from H2O!]

Year 11 Formal (age 17 - 1982)

The formal was the first dance Annette had gone without a date and was just going with her girlfriends. She turned out to like her mother's sewing skills and told her she didn't want anything too fancy to go in. However, she begged her to make it something 80s-like! But alas, Gracie could only grant that request so much before she had her artbook in one hand and needle & thread in another! [With a reference to a dress Tiffany Lamb (Annette) to rein the 80s!)

Wedding Guest

Annette and Gracie had been invited to a wedding! Well, it was more of a vow renewal, as the couple were old friends of parents back when they lived on the base and had a bit of a nostalgic touch! Considering Gracie was a bit of the same way, she found an old dress she owned when she was 16 and spruced it up a bit for Annette.

Dance Party Dress

After so much time and begging, this would be the ONLY dress Annette got from her that even resembled the 80s glitz and glam they once fought over. To be fair, the glitz existed in the 60s but she wasn't a fan of them. However, Annette was over the moon once she saw this:

Yearbook Photos

Annette may have been getting only a headshot for her school yearbook photos, but Gracie wanted to make memories. With the help of a friend, she and Annette took pictures all over Brisbane to add to the photo album. And once again that pesky beauty the mother and daughter shared cropped up when someone thought it was a genuine photo shoot and tried to recruit Annette into modeling! Gracie herself was a model in her teens and while she can say she had a good experience, there was a reason she never joined the industry full time! Luckily for her, Annette was more into becoming an inspiring chef than photos.

Year 12 Formal (age 18 - 1983)

At this point, Gracie had decided to take her daughter's advice and try to at least incorporate modern 80s with the classic 50s, and at the right time. Unlike the last formal, this time, Annette had a date, Gracie decided to do something to reflect the occasion. It also hit her how much she changed herself at 17 (most, she would never bring herself to tell Annette) and found herself designing a dress that brought back an old memory.

Gracie's 50th Birthday (age 25 - 1990)

There must have been a hint of irony in the world as for as Gracie knew. For weeks, her daughter had been quite secretive and she couldn't guess why. And when she questioned her son-in-law, he had the nerve to be cheeky and not confide in her daughter's secrets (but then again, that's how she knew he was the one for Annette!). However, during that time, she had asked once more for a dress. At the time, it had been year's and the last thing she made was the veil and reception dress for her daughter's wedding (the wedding dress she wore ended up being the one from the Debutante ball.) However, that night of her 50th birthday, Annette presented her a gift: A seafoam blue dress with pearls that she recognized as being something out of the 80s (irony Is that she liked the dresses when the 90s hit!) Annette has made it - with help, as she didn't inherit the skill from her mother and grandmother. She, Annette, and her son-in-law went out to what she thought was some fancy dinner...when it was revealed to be a small dance hall with the theme: Cloudland. Everyone they knew from friends (old and new) to coworkers, and even strangers she befriended who kept in touch, attended the party. She did raise an eyebrow at Annette being fit for the 50s while she was in the 80s...at least until an old song started playing and Annette asked her to dance...dance to the very song she fell in love with her father to. And then, she told her the most surprising news: She was to be a grandmother.

I saw this “100 OTP questions” by @the-moon-dust-writings and figured I'd procrastinate:

1. Who loves flower crowns more?

Neither of them really, but Asami might make Iroh wear one just to laugh at him.

2. Who is the one who likes to cuddle?

Iroh. Asami likes it, too, but he usually initiates.

3. Who has awful taste in music?

Honestly, both of them. Asami likes terrible dance music and Iroh likes obscure combinations of horns and bells and stuff from different cultures.

4. Who is the meme lover?

Asami thinks they’re funny. Iroh doesn’t quite understand.

5. How did their second date go?

Iroh tried to take Asami somewhere very fancy, but the wait was too long. They ended up making out in a shadowy doorway down the street and missing their reservation entirely. Iroh was mortified, but Asami dragged him around the corner to a low-key noodle shop that has since become their favorite restaurant.

6. How many children do they want/have?

Asami thinks about three. Iroh, as many as Asami will agree to.

7. Who hides the weapons?

Iroh hides weapons for Asami around the house so she’ll always have something on hand. In a drawer in the kitchen, on her nightstand, etc. He knows she can take care of herself… and he stashes weapons for her anyway. Asami rolls her eyes but secretly thinks it’s sweet.

8. Who is the better dancer?

Asami. She likes dancing, and learned formal dancing in school. Iroh can’t dance at all, having skipped out on all his lessons as a child after bribing his instructor. He thought dancing is boring, but likes dancing with Asami and lets her lead.

9. Do/Did they have a theme wedding?

No. They quite deliberately have a very normal wedding, including cutting out a lot of the more stuffy Fire Nation customs because Iroh doesn’t want Asami to feel out of place not having any family present.

10. What do their parents think of them dating?

Hiroshi Sato is livid, and actually tried to have Iroh assassinated from prison. His little girl, marry a firebender? A prince of the firebenders? Iroh’s parents are more accepting. Izumi initially thinks Asami is too young and gives Iroh a hard time about how quickly he got serious, but quickly comes around when it’s clear Asami is very mature for her age. Within a year Iroh’s parents are both hounding him on when he’ll make it official.

11. Are they a super sappy couple?

They are that couple everybody hates.

12. How did they get together?

They meet during the Equalist revolution, but don’t get together until long after. Iroh has a crush on Asami almost immediately, but spends forever sitting on it thinking it wasn’t the right time and trying to be friends until one day he just kind of slips up and kisses her. She kisses him back. It turns out Asami liked him, too, but she isn’t great at reading people and had no idea he was interested.

13. Who asked the other to get married?

Iroh just kind of blurts it out one day.

14. Who stays up too late and makes stupid jokes?

Asami is the night owl. Iroh makes the bad jokes.

15. Who is the nerd?

Oh my god, both of them. Asami is more of the classic nerd. Iroh is more of a dork.

16. Who knows the most obscure facts?

Iroh.

17. Who makes the other a flower crown?

Two questions about flower crowns out of 100?? Changing this to who is more dominant in bed. Asami.

18. Who likes to read?

Iroh. They both do, but he’s much more into it.

19. Who bothers the other person while the other person reads?

Asami. She has the shorter attention span.

20. Who tutors the other?

They both would in different subjects. Asami is better at math, physics, etc. Iroh is better at philosophy and languages.

21. Do they have similar taste in movies?

No. Asami likes gory slasher films and lots of action. Iroh scoffs and thinks they’re dumb. Asami, in turn, thinks his period dramas can be kind of boring, and refuses to count documentaries as movies. But there’s a healthy overlap in things like Vikings and Game of Thrones.

22. How do their personalities complement each other?

Asami helps Iroh lighten up a bit, drawing him out of his shell, and gives him an anchor and a sense of home. She’s more social than he is, and a lot of her friends eventually become his. But she’s also quiet enough and serious enough that she doesn’t tire him out and can feed his need for downtime. Iroh, in turn, loves seldom but deeply, and gives Asami the kind of fierce, unconditional love and stability she needs. He’s also genuinely interested in her projects, is smart enough to follow most of it, and is one of the only people who can occasionally beat her in Pai Sho. They have a lot of fun together just being nerds.

23. How do they tell everyone that they are going to be having a kid/adopting a child soon?

They don’t have to tell anybody. It’s all over Iroh’s face like a big neon sign.

24. Who has better fashion sense?

Asami, but not by much. She’s more up to date with trends, while Iroh’s style is clean and classic.

25. Who will punch someone out if they are rude to their partner?

Hoo boy, both of them. Do not go there.

26. What songs do they sing together in the vehicle?

Neither of them sing in the satomobile. Iroh has a decent voice, but he’s a bit private about it. Asami mostly hums.

27. What other couple would your otp get along with?

Iroh quickly becomes BFFs with Bolin. Asami and Opal aren’t quite as close, but they like each other’s company and have fun as a foursome. They also get along quite well with Pema and Tenzin.

28. Who likes to prank the other?

Iroh tries more often. Asami’s pranks are more successful.

29. Who is the one who loves to take pictures?

Iroh, though generally Korra is the picture taker in the group.

30. How would they react if they found out they were soul mates?

Iroh raises an eyebrow. “Hmm.” Asami only shrugs. They both already knew that.

31. Where would they live?

They like Republic City and decide to stay downtown, first in an apartment and eventually a larger townhouse.

32. What type of dragon would they own, if they could have one?

Whichever one Iroh made friends with. Asami is a bit wary of animals and would need him to convince her it was safe.

33. If they were both vampires, what type of vampires would they be?

The kind that live in a beautiful house with perfect collections that took hundreds of years to make. Iroh has first editions of everything in a giant library, arranged in a complex system only he understands. He’s working on his 14th language. Asami has invented artificial blood and doesn’t miss sunburns. Occasionally she’ll throw one of those big fancy vampire balls just so they can both get dressed up. They’re pretty happy.

34. What would they dress up as, for Halloween?

They once went as Lady Tienhai and the last king of Mo Ce because picking something obscure and historical was the only way to get Iroh into a costume.

35. Can they name each other’s favourite food?

Kind of. They are both really into food, so picking a favorite is hard. But if the question is can they order for one another, absolutely.

36. Do they have pet names for one another?

Asami sometimes calls Iroh “General Hotstuff” when she’s teasing. Iroh sometimes calls Asami “sex pretzel” when he’s 1000% sure they are alone.

37. How do they cheer each other up?

Asami is more of a gift giver. She’ll show up with Iroh’s favorite take-out or make him something in her workshop—anything to make him feel special and valued. Iroh is all about quality time, and will swing by Asami’s office to haul her out on surprise dates. He also gives great hugs.

38. Do they show a lot of PDA?

No. Iroh is very uncomfortable with PDA, especially when he’s in uniform. Asami follows his lead.

39. How old were they when they got together?

Asami was 19-20, Iroh 24-25.

40. Who is the one that would bring the puppy home?

Iroh, 100%. He’s such a sucker.

Yes, though Asami is the only one who really tries.

Asami moved in with Iroh, so it’s very basic. White walls, perfectly made bed, a neatly organized desk in the far corner by the window. He’s a total minimalist, having spent most of his adult life on a ship. Asami added a very fluffy comforter in *gasp* a color and lots of pillows.

They’d take turns, and at some point Asami would turn it into a contest.

Iroh. Asami is a terrible cook.

Iroh.

Not crazy, but Iroh and his ex are not on good terms. He doesn’t like to talk about it.

Asami, purple. Iroh, black. He gets annoyed when people get him so much red stuff.

Iroh. He fired Asami from the kitchen, something they are both grateful for.

Asami, at least out loud. Iroh mostly swears under his breath.

Probably Asami, unless it was about the kids. If anyone comes for Iroh’s kids, they’d better hide.

Some version of “I miss you” or random pictures of stuff. They generally only text when Iroh is away as they’re both busy during the day.

Asami has a shorter fuse. Iroh is more ridiculous when he loses his shit.

Not really.

Asami will lay on top of Iroh on the couch like a sandwich. It’s the only position she seems to be able to nap in.

Iroh covers a lot of the basics. He sets a schedule, makes lunches, tells bedtime stories, is more likely to help with the homework. Asami is the one who gets them around and does most of the interacting with teachers, other parents, etc. They share things fairly equally.

Iroh.

68. Who listens to more vulgar music?

Asami.

69. Do either of them have secrets even the other doesn’t know?

Yes. Asami can be secretive about some of her projects, both out of an abundance of caution but also because she likes a big reveal. Iroh keeps some past relationship stuff close, and will occasionally read a steamy romance novel for “tips.”

Bolin and Opal

71. Do they tip the waiter/waitress on their date?

Iroh tips very well.

72. How do they work out a fight?

Asami yells. Iroh yells back. One of them storms off. The other one waits about half an hour then goes to find them, usually with an offering of food. There are hugs. Somebody cries. Then they finally talk it out before falling asleep together.

73. Who brings home an illegal pet?

Asami. She is less likely to have a pet, but if she does, it’s going to be a weird one.

74. What side of the bed do each of them sleep on?

Iroh is on the side by the window because he likes to get up with the sun.

75. What is their favorite photo of them two together?

There’s a photo Korra took at the beach where Iroh has Asami thrown over his shoulder right before dunking her in the water. This is the picture he takes with him when he’s deployed.

76. Who takes longer in the bathroom?

Asami.

77. Who has more songs on their ipod?

Iroh. If you can call them songs.

78. What movie did they first see together?

Iroh took her to Last Days of the Sun Warriors. She fell asleep. He said the book was better.

Asami thinks Iroh’s butt looks great in jeans. Iroh got Asami a red silk robe from the Fire Nation and likes to see it fall off.

80. Who makes jokes during inappropriate times?

Iroh.

81. At what age do they discuss the possibility of children?

Mid-20s, though they don’t have them until a little later.

82. What do they love about each other the most?

Iroh likes that Asami is tough and smart and a problem-solver. Asami likes that Iroh is kind and brave and has a strong moral compass.

83. Who is the one that sees the big picture, while the other focus’s on the small details?

They are both big picture people, which is sometimes a problem. Of the two, Asami is probably better at details, but she’s also forgetful.

84. What would they write on their partner’s social media’s for their anniversary?

Asami would probably put up a picture of them and say something brief but sweet. Iroh doesn’t really understand social media and would just paste a heart-eyes emoji.

85. Who is bad at math?

Iroh. He’s not bad, per se, but Asami is very, very good.

Asami.

87. Who does stuff on impulse?

Both of them in different ways. Asami is generally more flexible. Iroh usually has a plan but makes big decisions completely off the cuff.

88. How do they comfort each other when they are helpless to do anything about the situation?

Lots of physical touch. Iroh will kind of just wrap himself around her in one giant, whole body hug. Asami will spend some time cursing out whomever is causing the issue, then let him lay his head in her lap and give Iroh a good head scratch or massage.

89. What is an inside joke they have?

There was one time they had sex in Asami’s office at Future Industries, so occasionally she’ll drop things like, “feel like coming by the office?” with a suggestive eyebrow waggle. Iroh is, predictably, very embarrassed. Also interested.

90. Who makes the other smile with almost no effort at all?

Asami: *exists* Iroh: *smiles*

91. What is their favourite holiday?

New Years is a big deal in the Fire Nation. Iroh loves his family and likes going home, and Asami has grown to love it almost as much.

92. Who is the one that is calm and collected while the other is angry and destructive?

They take turns. Both of them can have quite a temper when pushed too hard.

93. What is their favourite board game to play?

They’re both big Pai Sho fans, but can get into any kind of strategy game. Nobody really likes to play them though, they're too good.

94. Who accidentally sets something on fire?

Asami. Iroh hasn’t had a fire accident since he was four.

95. Who has the car ready while the other is robbing the store?

Asami. She’d rob the store, too, but no way is she letting Iroh drive.

96. What artist/group did they go to for their first concert?

Iroh booked a private box at the Republic City Opera, thinking that was an impressive thing he should do on a date. It turns out neither of them like opera, and by the end they were both making fun of it.

97. Who sleep talks?

Asami. Iroh thinks it’s funny.

98. Who is the more social one?

Asami, by a long shot.

99. What are their karaoke songs?

Neither of them would really sing karaoke, but Iroh cannot hold his liquor like at all so if he ever got really plastered Asami might be able to drag him up there. By which point he’d be too far gone to have an opinion on the song and would sing just about anything.

100. Who would get up on stage and make a fool of themselves just to make the other laugh?

Asami.

1. He was precocious enough to know, at 5 years old, that he wanted to change his name (x)

2. He has a bunch of nicknames: Sandy Amberg, Young Sandwich, etc. but the most endearing one is 'Droidy', his family's name for him (x)

17 Curious Facts About Cincinnati’s Findlay Market

There Can Be Only One Findlay Market is the last remaining public market in Cincinnati, surviving the demise of eight other markets on Canal (1829-64), Court (1864-1914), Sixth (1829-1960), Pearl (1804-1934), Wade (1848-98), and Fifth (1829-70) streets, the Jabez Elliott Flower Market (1890-1950) and Farmers Wholesale Market (c. 1815-1967). Findlay Market is the oldest continuously operated public market in Ohio.

Hand-Me-Down Bell When the old Pearl Street Market was razed in 1934, its antique tower bell was salvaged and installed at Findlay Market. The bell is rung on the morning of each market day.

Not Just For Shopping Cincinnati’s public markets offered more than food. They were popular venues for political meetings, served as polling sites during elections, and rallying spots for volunteer militia during emergency musters.

A City And A Market Honor General Findlay The Market is named for James Findlay (1770 - 1835), who purchased a large plot of land in what was then unincorporated territory north of Cincinnati. Findlay was an early settler, pioneer merchant, two-time mayor, U.S. congressman, and general in the Ohio militia. During his service in the War of 1812, he built a military outpost named Fort Findlay in Hancock County, Ohio. The City of Findlay grew up around the fort.

Old Tippecanoe & Findlay William Henry Harrison campaigned for the U.S. Presidency twice, unsuccessfully in 1836 and successfully in 1840. During his campaigns, he established headquarters in Cincinnati at the home of his good friends, James and Jane Findlay, on the east side of Broadway, between Third and Fourth.

Remember The Ladies Although Findlay Market also memorializes the general’s wife, Jane Irwin Findlay (1769 - 1851), her biography does not appear on the historic marker at the intersection of Race and West Elder streets. It is likely that she had as much to do with creating Findlay Market as her esteemed husband. Construction on the market began almost immediately after her will was probated in 1852. Mrs. Findlay also had a brief but prominent role in United States history. When William Henry Harrison was elected president in 1840 his wife Anna was too ill to travel. Her place as acting first lady was filled by Harrison’s daughter-in-law, Jane Irwin Harrison, assisted by her aunt, Jane Irwin Findlay, who was then seventy-three.

What Street? Although early references call it the Findlay Street Market, the market is located, and always has been, in the middle of Elder Street. Findlay Street runs a block north of the market.

The Market Has Two Founding Dates The cornerstone of Findlay Market was installed in October 1852. Construction dragged on for years because of disputes with contractors and difficulties with the new and unfamiliar all-iron design. The market didn’t open for business until 23 February 1855.

Innovative Iron The Findlay Market building was designed by Alfred West Gilbert (1816-1900), a civil engineer who was the city’s official surveyor and a member of the Water Works board. Gilbert’s open-air pavilion employed a durable but unconventional cast and wrought iron frame, but no walls. It was among the first buildings constructed in the United States with this method, and among the few that have survived.

Shop At Your Own Risk For its first 60 years, Findlay Market was only an open-air shed, with no plumbing or electricity. Meat hung in the breeze, exposed to dust and flies. Market butchers stored meat in nearby brewery tunnels or relied on delivered ice. Renovations in 1902 and 1915 enclosed the structure and introduced water, refrigeration and lighting.

Boss Cox’s Racket While running Cincinnati as his own private fiefdom, George Barnsdale Cox let no detail escape his clutches. He saw to it that his friends got great deals on Findlay Market stalls, which they could “sublet” to actual vendors at exorbitant rates.

Early Promotions In connection with renovations in 1915, the Findlay Market Improvement Association ran several promotional events. In one, a brand-new $2 bill was hidden somewhere among market displays as a prize for the first shopper to find it. The Association also sponsored a red-head day at Chester Park.

Findlay Market Was Late To The Parade Although Findlay Market is synonymous with Opening Day in Cincinnati, Greg Rhodes, Cincinnati Reds team historian, has documented that the parade preceded the market’s involvement by at least 30 years. The Cincinnati Reds marked their initial home game with a parade between 1890 and 1902. When the team pulled out, booster clubs stepped in to run an annual parade. Findlay Market was not involved until 1920.

Butchers Only Until the 1930s, only meat vendors were allowed to rent stalls inside the Findlay Market building. Everyone else, including vegetable dealers, purveyors of pickles and spices, the butter and egg men and the fishmongers, were restricted to outdoor spaces.

Unhappy Centennial In 1954, just after Findlay Market celebrated its 100th birthday, Cincinnati’s City Planning Commission staff recommended demolishing the historic market and replacing it with “ a modern shopping center with an adequate parking area in line with modern planning concepts.”

An Erstwhile Municipal Utility In 2004, the City of Cincinnati transferred management of the market to the non-profit Corporation for Findlay Market. For the previous 152 years, Findlay, like all other public markets in town, had been managed as a municipal service by Cincinnati’s city government.

Necessary Renovation Although Findlay Market has been upgraded, repaired and restored on several occasions, the 1974 make-over was more urgent than some of the others. After the official re-opening, marked by Governor John Gilligan cutting a ribbon of sausages, a reporter asked an architect if he had done anything to retain the old-fashioned flavor of the place. “I developed some mechanical rats,” he said, “to run across the floor to make the old folks feel at home.”
