As someone who lives in Texas (unfortunately) I find it SO FUNNY when people make keith overwhelmingly southern. Like, cmon yall. Texas history 101, the cowboy era ended a long ass time ago, most of us DONT wear cowboy hats anymore. Why the fuck would keith ride a horse???? Nobody does that unless they own horses??? And horses are incredibly expensive???
Like, I understand cowboy aus, and historical aus, but if Texas, in 2024, isn't like that (the stereotypes are so wild) then why would it be like that in approx 2314?
Very few wear cowboy hats or boots. Very few have horses, and NOBODY rides them to school, ffs. Keith is not a farmhand.
Some texas stereotypes that are true, however...
-yeah we say yall nonstop
-ain't, wouldja, couldn't've, etc.
-confederate flag is less common here, normally you see the "come and take it" or the "don't tread on me"
-if keith ever went to public school, 1/3 of his classmates or more are Latino
-most Texans know moderate amounts of Spanish
-we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and most ppl think it's Mexican independence day (it's not)
-barbecue.
-chili WITHOUT BEANS YOU HEATHEN
-will fight over food, family, or football
-either you support the Dallas Cowboys or the Houston Texans. Any other team is sacrilege. Once you make this choice, it WILL have effects on your social life.
-football is basically king here lol, none of the other stuff in school gets nearly the funding
-people living in rural areas (like Keith's dad) often own guns, and not pistols either-- rifles and shotguns, usually
-NOBODY SAYS YEEHAW. at least not unironically
-Texans will ironically say yeehaw, rootin-tootin, etc bc we are aware of our history and think it's wack
-were not all racist, but everyone knows at least one person who is (usually an older family member)
-mind your gotdamn manners at the table. Get those elbows away from your food
-sir and ma'am for strangers
-open doors for old people. You don't have to be a man to do this.
-please and thank you is SO important, people will assume things about you otherwise
-if you don't have a church, you miss out on a lot of community (coming from a non-religious person)
-most people here are Baptist, on that note (Hispanic people contribute to the Catholic population, but still, Baptist is #1)
-internet service is awful unless you're in a city
-we WILL close all schools for 2 inches of snow/ice
-we laugh at hurricanes, and then do our best to help our Houston neighbors
-but everybody hates Houston and Dallas, unless you live there
-most people are okay with Austin, San Antonio, etc
-EL PASO IS TINY, AND HALF OF IT IS IN MEXICO (and is called Ciudad Juárez there)
-beer is god. And God has no problem with drinking. (According to beliefs here)
-gambling is illegal here, but we love it, so states like Oklahoma have built casinos RIGHT ON THE STATE BORDER so that we can drive a bit and gamble as we please
-everybody's dad drives a truck. Otherwise people assume he's got a small pp

btw 🌐mercury went 🌐retrograde today in 🌐aries so heres my unsolicited advice for those who wish to seek it🐣:
Ok.So. the next month everyones thoughts and speech moving faster than usual. people may become uncharacteristically impulsive w/ their words, a confrontational competitive & potentially argumentitive energy. ego fragility especially cus chiron is heavily involved. take !extra conscious! measures !towards S l o w ing down, take a moment of introspection before u speak/react, re-read before posting, strongly consider other's perspectives. lest ye be caught w foot in mouth 😣 its going to b a common theme this cycle so if it Does happen just try to see the lesson in it but dont dwell. in regards to work/projects if you dont think it needs more time it does.
And be forgiving of ppl who may be acting out of pocket, or lashing out..ppl gonna be easily offended this month & prone to self victimization(chiron). people are gonna be saying some crazy shit LOL. dont escalate, just diffuse, have patience, gentleness, there's a lot to process rn and many are caught in the motions without energetic guidance.! This has been building since march 18 when mercury first entered its pre-shadow period so u may have noticed this stuff happening already.
overall its a good time to slow everything down & unplug so u can learn more about yourself. april is said to be the wildest month of 2024 for many reasons i wont delve in rn but its gonna be a wild ride from start to finish, there could be some real miracles this month especially towards the end. and even tho merc rx can bring communication upsets, i think this aries energywill also unearth some really genius stuff up out of ppl who werent feeling courageous enough before. people who have a good heart & kind intentions will surely have no problem letting thoughts flow freely. so buckle up & let's enjoy the ride ganbatte minasaaaan xDDD

My april films list
The Scar/Blizna (1976): When I was in college my roommate was in a Polish class and she had access to a library of films and we watched a lot of Krzysztof Kieślowski and they are all good, I think. This one is about a mid level manager who inherits a white elephant of a project: clear a forest to build an industrial plant. The local people and the forest itself turn against him. It's magical realism with that Slavic touch of fatalism that always feels relevant.
Sweetie (1989): I saw this in the 90s at a film festival and so it was a bit of a shock when The Piano came out and it felt like you could not have two more different films at least on the surface, but both are directed by Jane Campion. Sweetie is a frank and often dark comedy about an ungovernable woman--a cautionary tale about the infantilisation of women, seen through the eyes of her long suffering sibling.  Akira (1987): Iconic anime with a beautiful smooth style. Copied so frequently it can look a bit basic to those who've grown up with its imitators, but the heart of it is a great score and atmospheric noir setting that make the set pieces like the night motorcycle ride through Tokyo the perfect accompaniment to millennial angst. Near Dark (1987): Katherine Bigelow's shot at the sexy vampire genre features most of the cast of Aliens as a troop of vampires who follow around a Confederate soldier. Bill Paxton does an entertainingly nasty turn as one of the baddies. Feels like an Aliens/Lost Boys AU and that is a compliment, really.
Cleo from 5-7 (1962): Not to be like this already in what amounts to a two sentence blurb, but the summary for this film describes Cleo as a hypochondriac? Excuse me but she is waiting around to find out if she has cancer. It seems to me that this is a movie about the way women are dismissed and not seen, even when they are famous and actually the center of attention wherever they go. On the surface she looks like a spoiled diva, but behind the scenes we see she is frightened and lonely. Anyway fuck the patriarchy and Free Cleo! Twelve Angry Men (1957): We rewatched this because my son is on some weird reddit sub thread discord where everyone rpgs as jurors from this movie...I'm not joking. Imagining a super niche fandom for Jack Warner. It exists. THe internet is a wild place. Anyway, this holds up. Don't mix up Syndey Lumet and Sydney Pollack like I did, lol. Embarrassing!
Ashes and Diamonds (1958): Polish film master, Andrez Wadja's be bop riff on neo realism, is a chronicle of the final day of German occupation, and a Hail Mary attempt by a young resistance fighter to wrest the country back from the Soviet Army which is already there. It's a hopeless mission, born of drunken desperation in smokey back rooms, one that comes apart in daylight. It's feels like Rebel without a Cause, but like...he has a cause? There a sense of tragic waste that mirrors Nicholas Ray's vision of restless American youth. Scoop (2024): A rather weak entry in the behind the scenes journalism drama genre that I seem to be unable to resist in any form. This has Billy Piper as a booking agent who manages the coup of getting Prince Andrew to sit down for an interview with the press about the pedophilia allegations. Your average episode of The Thick of It, probably has more meat than this made for TV film.
The Two Popes (2019): For those playing along at home this was my fourth time watching this. What can I say, two of my fave old lovies flirting away in Pope costumes. It's a comfort film. You are not immune to propaganda. Bulworth (1998): Featuring just about every working black actor of the era, this movie was kind of ahead of its time. About a liberal politician who is so depressed about the state of his party being owned by powerful business interests that he decides to commit suicide by hiring a hitman to kill him so that his family will at least get the insurance. Warren Beatty at his most ridiculous, this is underrated gem.
Great Expectations (1974) After revisiting this version, I went back to David Lean, which is no surprise. This is a made for TV movie that has a lot of familiar faces from 50s British film including Robert Morley and my boi Anthony Quayle. Michael York is Pip. Heat (1995): I might become slightly obsessed with Michael Mann after watching all this moody atmosphere punctuated with bursts of violence, with long passages set to a synth score that made Chris Fleming want to crash his car. Some beautiful lighting and camera work in the final set piece which takes place on an airport runway. Iconic and yet, bloated and overlong and I just don't know why I like it so much? Maybe it's Al Pacino's reactions which are just so off the wall in some scenes, and the disconcerting normality of the other people in the same scenes, ya know? Like they are in two different movies. I shot Andy Warhol (1996): Watched this for Jared Harris (who is adorable as always and terrific as always and completely sinks into the role as always) and came away remembering why Lily Taylor was a 90s icon/IT girl and boy can she act. Like wow. Andy Warhol is the title character, but it's more about Valerie Solanas the radical feminist lesbian who shot him because she believed he stole her work. (The movie implies that he did, a little bit...). Her SCUM manifesto remains controversial to say the least, but her story is a utterly heartbreaking, told with humanity and nuance. Actually a great choice for Pride month because it talks about gay history and it's not pretty or comfortable but it's necessary to learn. Hopscotch (1980): Delightful comedy starring Walter Matthau and Judy Collins as a spy couple. Combines actually decent spy thriller with actually funny stuff and it's romantic and sweet as well.

take what u can carry, josephine mary
april 30, 2024 - 07:30
this weekend was a whirlwind of vibrant nights, moments overflowing with life's richest hues— a euphemism for "drinking the weekend away" lol.
it was an after-party to some party, we rode the city's pulse down the governor's road, landing in dasma just because we couldn't find a parking spot in my place in carmona (we still got asses driven back in carmona because we're stupid lol— also, i stepped on a shit. fucking hell.)
i didnt know dasma was just a 25 minute drive away, If only ive known earlier—i might've asked out that charming tumblr girl from dasma. but yeah, i guess that ship sailed a lonh time ago. lol.
anyway, there we were, lost in the blur of laughter and libations, drifting into slumber only to wake and toast to the dawn once more. then just like that, monday morning barged in, bringing with it the inevitable hangover and the rush of reality. thank the heavens for orange juice, the ultimate cure-all. i stole a few moments of sleep before facing the workweek, i couldn't help but reflect on the wild ride we had. we might do it again this week, but damn we're old. we shall see. this weekend felt like the maine's forever halloween album, and i fucking love it.

reflecting on 2023, thoughts for 2024, long personal post
How would I sum up 2023? Well, it's certainly been productive. Securing a permanent position at a university I adore is unreal, and I still subconsciously assume there's been a mistake and they'll fire me any day now. After what was essentially 7 years of precarity, having professional stability is absolutely wild. I love my job, I love my students, I love my colleagues, and it's insane to me that I seem to have actually "made it" professionally.
My second book is coming out with a Big Publisher and that's very nice too. I don't have much emotional attachment to that project, but it took a lot of work and I'm satisfied that it is reaching its appropriate conclusion. I will make, I am sure, zero money out of it, but that's academic publishing for you lol
I gave my first keynote paper at a (cute, small) conference, so that was also a milestone. I also organised a very successful conference in which like 1/4 of the speakers cited my work, which was absolutely surreal and made me want to disappear into the ground.
I made a huge amount of progress on my novel, it's pretty much finished, and my one real resolution for 2024 is to make a proper effort to get it published. I'll wait until my academic book is out to start that process, but that's the one resolution I'm setting for myself. I don't know if I'll have any luck (it's not exactly a book with mass appeal) but I want to at least give it a shot.
Healthwise, well. It's been a ride. A good ride, but a ride nonetheless. I switched medications for my chronic illness, coming off a really major one and getting onto a much milder one, as I've been basically asymptomatic. This is good news all round: I've adapted well to the new meds, and I don't have to deal with all the nasty side effects of the old meds (they fuck you up long term). The main problem I have now is that I can't drink much alcohol, but that's a small price to pay for good health.
But one side effect of the medication was weight gain. I gained around a stone after I'd been on it for a year but I figured that was just "not being in your early 20s anymore" weight gain. Turns out nope! I haven't weighed myself lately but I have visibly lost a lot of weight and it's a little disconcerting to be suddenly, well, very skinny again. I look much younger and smaller. It's not bad, it's just a stark difference to adjust to and not something I was expecting to happen in my 30s.
I've also adjusted my hormone regimen. I don't have any long term plans (i never do lol) but I've been enjoying playing more with feminine presentations. I'm just, comfortable with my body and happy with who I am. How about that!
Mental healthwise, hoo boy. Let's address my being cursed by an ancient amulet and becoming crushingly obsessed with the fictional villain of The Hunger Games. I haven't spoken about this on here but The Shivering Season is significantly informed by my own experiences with different forms of abuse and mental health problems, and I have been processing a lot while writing it. Sometimes I've had anxiety attacks while writing, which never happens to me! There was a point before Christmas I was having anxiety attacks at random everyday, just hanging out watching TV, because it seems I was bringing so much stuff to the surface. And I seem to have worked through some things, because the intrusive sexual abuse thoughts/fantasies I have experienced compulsively for, idk, 15+ years have gone. Completely gone. Really, really weird! I need to go back to therapy about this but I just don't know how to explain "I became obsessed with The Hunger Games and now I have 70% less trauma" in a normal way.
And I have been extremely manic these past 2 months. That is probably obvious from how I've been posting, but jesus christ. I wake up at 5am, I fall asleep at 11pm (and as someone who historically needs 8-9 hours every night, this is significant). I write thousands of words almost every day. I am generally inclined to periods of mania, but this is extremely intense and it has lasted since the start of November. I'm scared of crashing, both because this hyperproductivity is giving me a lot of positive brain chemicals and because I don't know what kind of person I'll be if it goes. Will the intrusive thoughts come back? I don't want them to! I've been very happy without them!!
And that's the conclusion, really: I've had a very happy year. I'm mistrustful of happiness, but I am still happy. I don't know what to expect of 2024, but I am optimistic, and content, and marvelling at in what a good place I'm in now compared to how I was.
Happy new year!

Vinny's 2023 fics!!
I'm so proud of all the writing I did in 2023!! I learned so much that I'm so excited to apply to my projects for 2024 <3
Not Whole, Not Holy Rating: Explicit Word count: 2,752
Moody, quiet, and introspective, this piece explores endverse!Cas and endverse!Dean find a little bit of solace in each other among their crumbling world. Best described by the tag: Not hurt/comfort, not hurt/no comfort, but some secret third thing.
A Midsummer Night's Dean Rating: Teen+ Word count: 16,948
A wild ride of a casefic loosely based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Featuring love potions, Dean having chronic foot-in-mouth-disease, Cas being SO down bad it's dangerous, and Sam wanting to be literally anywhere else but here. I've been told this fic has made people laugh so hard, it has awoken children and brought concerned family members a'knocking on doors.
Innervate A series currently containing two fics, with a few more additions planned! This series follows Cas' developing relationship to his body and how he navigates through the world with it. It's full of fun science and anatomy, alternate angel lore, and LOTS of UST between Dean and Cas (don't worry, it will get resolved... eventually lol. This is a series-long slow burn)
Check out Prelude as a sampler for vibes (full disclosure-- this was a WIP for a LOOOOOONG time so while this fic was uploaded in 2023 the writing is far older than that)
Then for a more cohesive story (and tbqh way stronger writing), pop on over to Ask Me Why My Heart's Inside My Throat
Spellbound Rating: Explicit Word count: 4,764
A one-shot exploring the Master/Apprentice relationship of Sam and Rowena. Let's be real here. They have insane magic sex and I feel like not enough ppl talk about it. EYE barely even scratched the surface with this one. The quickest summary I got for this one: Sam's cardinal virtue is that one a hot woman speaks, he listens.
Long Black Cloud Coming Down Rating: Gen Word Count: 3,540
Taking place prior to s1, teen!Dean has to act quick and think fast when Sammy suddenly comes down with a fever. He can't let his thoughts race too far though, or he just might start believing that whatever's going on is more than just a fever and a snow storm.

Books of 2024: THE GIRL IN RED by Christina Henry.
We took a trip to Red River Gorge this weekend, and I both started and finished this book while we were there! It was a very speedy read.
While I did really enjoy the genre-savvy protag, I was expecting more Wolf Presence in a Little Red Riding Hood retelling, either literally or metaphorically (I mean, come on, look at that cover??). There were a couple references to (metaphorical) wolves and one coyote-man comparison early on (also metaphorical), but it felt like the Wolf Motif mostly was dropped, which was an Interesting Choice™, given that the plot entire was Red walking through an apocalypse and the forest to her grandmother's house. (Yes, she really goes by Red, which is not her name--she just really likes her red outerwear.)
This was also much more ongoing-apocalypse than post-apocalypse, and said apocalypse is referred to in-book as "the Cough" (publication date: June 2019?? wild). Family Units are endangered and fall sick on page, be warned! In addition to the Cough, there's also quite a bit of gore (via both brutal axe murders (self defense) and chest bursting a la Alien (which is the in-book comparison lol--see "genre-savvy protag")(admittedly this chest bursting subplot did feel very What The Hell Is This Fresh Bullshit, and not exactly cohesive with the rest of the story...not sure why that's in there lmao)).
Again: Quick read! Not super complicated or twisty, but it was a nice simple read after making it through THE BITCH QUEEN CHRONICLES, and I'm glad I read it for my own LRRH retelling reasons.
#books of 2024#book photography#my photography#the girl in red#christina henry#lrrh#forreal though i am SO GLAD i didn't try to start this one while my whole family actively had COVID lmaoooo#(we just got over it finally)#and it was perhaps not the BEST choice to take to an isolated cabin in the woods but i WAS right that the forest walks vibes were on point#SERIOUSLY WHERE WERE THE WOLVES#AT LEAST A WOLF!!#i really thought one character we met toward the end might be Wolfish but. he was just a genuinely nice guy#that was lowkey a disappointment ngl#also the Cough/crawler thing felt. out of place and unresolved.#like she (the author) could've picked ONE of those threads they weren't both necessary??#and then the chest bursting/crawler thing wasn't. resolved. at all??#like the protag even said in narration she was just gonna let it go not her business??? also disappointing.#(it also happened with like five pages left in the whole book so. not sure what else to expect)#the whole book was literally trying to get to grandma's but it wasn't a beat for beat fairy tale retelling#(mine is beat for beat. or it will be. when i get to revising.)#(but we both have fucked up post apocalyptic viral/bacterial end of world scenarios leading to our Reds so i thought maybe a good comp.)#(not actually a good comp besides vibes though.)#OH AND SASHA (mine) AND RED (henry's) ARE BOTH NARRATIVELY AWARE#like red knows genre stuff (horror movies and scifi and survivalist things)#but i want sasha to be aware that she's In The Fairy Tale but weirdly and meta about it. so there's SOME similarity but not quite the same.#i did not like how her whole family dies horrible deaths#(spoilers i suppose)#(but you know by the first chapter that she's alone so. is it a spoiler.)#anyway i have a surprising amount of thoughts about this actually so i guess it did something to my brain?? which is nice?? i guess?#easy prose and very predictable otherwise lol

Im always in a minority, story of my life 😂 i like it here tho. Its not crowded lol
I don’t think we have an equivalent, people definitely would’ve made noise about it by now if we did. We can’t even get melatonin without a prescription. And for a hot minute they almost took pain killers off the shelf and made people go see a doctor if they wanted paracetamol or ibuprofen. Like what??? Thankfully that didn’t happen, but that’s the mindset we gotta deal with.
When i was in America i could take a bottle of melatonin off the shelf in target… like?????? The dream.
We do have regular cough syrup so I could maybe try that…
So i was on twitter (a ‘reliable’ source im sure. Also side note, it was so frkn complicated to get a twitter account. Elon made me do maths… MATHS! So i am making this worth my while and i made a ghost accnt so i could haunt lol) and saw apparentlyyyyyy snc said explore videos were coming back in 2024. What do you think?
- aussie anon
You can't even get melatonin??? Wow! That's wild.
Oh be careful with the old twitter. It can get...messy sometimes, lol.
I believe they hinted at it somewhere, possibly xplrclub... but I don't think it'll be what people may be expecting/wanting (circa 2018 snc abandoned). They just can't do that anymore. They've got too much riding on their shoulders, and I honestly don't even think they want to do the dangerous shit like that, really. I also don't think it'll hit as well as people think it will - people want 2018 snc, but they aren't 2018 snc anymore, so it won't feel the same.
But, low risk abandoned, or places like Chernobyl where they can pay to explore legally? Sure, I could see them trying to work it in here and there. I think they'd like to get out of the paranormal rat race every once in a while, anyway, and why not go back to the other thing they were known for that they know will bring in views? They could probably find a couple places that mix haunted and abandoned, get a twofer out of the deal 🤣.

I’m making an introduction post. I don’t know how to introduce the introduction post so. Here it is
Hi! I’m Lake. I’m queer and nonbinary and I use they/them, it/its, and xe/xem pronouns!
I’m 19 years old, I will be turning 20 in August 2024. As of right now, I’m in my second year at Western Michigan University with a double major in English: Creative Writing and Psychology. I am also engaged to my wonderful partner, Jay (they/he)!
If you follow me, you can expect an absolutely wild mixture of posts lol. I love Star Trek: TNG, I love the Legend of Zelda, I love the X-Files, but I also often reblog posts about social justice/activism stuff and queer stuff. Also just anything I find funny or interesting. My tumblr is for me, and all of you are just along for the ride :) /lh
Some other facts about me! I have ADHD, I love hockey, I play video games a lot (mainly minecraft and tloz), I love to write, I have a huge collection of funky/fun earrings and I wear a different pair every day, and I have one tattoo currently but want more in the future!!
If you ever want to reach me for any reason, I’m more frequently active on my insta, @/cozy_lake. I’m on here fairly often as well, I just never check messages or asks because I’m bad at remembering to do that lmao.
Anyway, I also don’t know how to end this so yeah!! That’s a little about me! I hope you enjoy my chaotic blog :D

andie!! i am dropping by with some good music and new year wishes! 🎶🎉 thank you so much for being part of my 2023 🥹 you are so incredibly sweet and soooo cool omg like!!! i adore how organised you are!! and how creative you are!!!
as a year end pick, my favourite read from you is: lay low (take it slow) omg bsjbsj (tho i think when i get to the rest of your masterlist... i'll love everythign asfbasj) WAAH i just! love the way you write!! i go through em sooo fast 🥹
if i may ask!! 🥺 (pls feel free not to answer if uncomfy!!) how was 2023 for you? what’s a favourite thing (anything) you discovered this year? do you have any reflections from the past year? any resolutions for the next? 🥹
Hi Selly my beloved angel princess. 🥺 Happy New Year to you!! You have absolutely been such a bright spot in my 2023 and I can't thank you enough not only for how sweet you are to me but for everything you contribute making fandom a fun place. Not only are your fics incredible but you jump around leaving questions like little presents and I think you are magic. 🥺
2023 was pretty good! A wild ride with many ups and downs, but definitively better than 2022 lol. I discovered sooo many good things this year. I read more x reader fic this year than I ever have before and found some absolute standouts that I will be returning to again and again. I also found a new favorite pubbed fiction author Everina Maxwell (if you like gays smooching in space, I highly recommend lol), I made a zillion new fandom friends, and I got to spend a lot of time with the people I love!!
I think, reflecting on 2023, some of the biggest mistakes I have made come from comparing myself to other people, being impatient, and fearing misunderstanding. In 2024 I'd like to be so much more intentional about how I handle certain unexpected situations, and more conscientious of how self-doubt shapes my attitudes and interactions!! I try always to do my best, but I will try to do even better in the coming year!!
What about you?? Got any resolutions in 2024??

Scrunkore Media "Thread" 2023: Part 5
I got burnout and never got back into it so I'm hella simplifying it lol shit happens
Tumblr media
the scrunko core has burned out, rebooting
50) Wendell & Wild (Movie, 2022)
A lovingly crafted stop-motion animated movie with some good old kid-friendly horror vibes and a punky attitude, even starring a pretty nice transmasc character that I'm super happy to see. It's a nice story with a good visual style and a lot of heart, and I think Key and Peele being involved is pretty funny honestly. [4★]
51) Murder by Numbers (Switch, 2020)
Decent enough Picross game with a basic detective narrative stringing it together that I'm not really a huge fan of, but it does its job and I appreciate the adorable robot as well as some of its representation. And no idea how they got the composer from Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick, lmao [3★]
52) Pokémon Picross (GBC, Unreleased)
Yeah, this was better than the 3DS one, it's just basic Picross that doesn't do much (only real mechanic it adds is being able to change the music) but that's still better than the shitty mobile game model. They really should have just released this, it was straight-up finished and I even got a cart that works on original hardware because I think that's neat. [3.5★]
53) Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch, 2020)
Going to be killed for playing this as my first Paper Mario but who cares, this game is cool in spite of its awkward battle system (which DOES kinda suck). Just a fun adventure with typical quirky writing and some surprisingly powerful moments, plus an excellent soundtrack, I'm sure some of the earlier games are better but I did play this one and did enjoy it. [4★]
54/55) Knives Out/Glass Onion (Movies, 2019/2022)
Incredible pair of detective movies, both full of really engaging writing and directing work that keeps you invested and never stops being entertaining to watch, surely still really good on a rewatch too. They also really fuckin' hate rich people, especially the second one which is woke as hell and has one of my favourite endings in anything, so that's what some might call "based". I can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does for the third Benoit Blanc movie, which is apparently meant to be a 2024 release. [5★]
56) Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Comics, 2018-Present)
These are some damn enjoyable comics, telling some fun and generally quite well-written stories set after the events of Sonic Forces with a cast of really cool characters. Honestly kind of ride or die for Tangle and Whisper, but original villains like Dr Starline are great to read too. Early highlight is definitely the Metal Virus arc, but the more recent stuff with Surge was excellent too. Safe to say the team behind these stories know their shit. [4.5★]
57) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Movie, 2023)
They really did it, they went out of their way to make a bigger and better sequel to one of the greatest animated movies I've seen, and it's very possible that they succeeded... but we won't know until the second part comes out, which looks unfortunately unlikely to be any time soon because production sucked. Still, what we did get is yet another gorgeously animated spectacle with a cool storyline, everyone knows that. [4.5★]
58) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Movie, 2023)
One of the only parts of the MCU that I cared about more or less concluded with this movie, and fuck it might be the best one in the trilogy. Rocket's harrowing backstory really hits out with that theme of some jerkass playing god, and the core adventure of the film is pretty engaging too, just as cool as ever. Plus it's now confirmed Vocaloid exists in the MCU lol [4.5★]
59) The Suicide Squad (Movie, 2021)
Another instance of James Gunn making an actual good superhero movie, this time making a good adaptation of something that previously had a bit of a shit one. I appreciate the kinda edgy nature of the titular squad that was handled solidly here, and their antics are honestly pretty funny. Fun action sequences too, and it's honestly really cool how much the movie thinks rats are awesome (they kind of are tbh). Peter Capaldi, the best version of Doctor Who, playing a mad scientist role is also just... really good. [4★]
60) Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (Movie, 2022)
Man fuck Disney, this is obviously the best version of the Pinocchio story and their attempt to overshadow it was lame as hell. I quite like the darker take on the story with themes of death and war around Italy's rise of fascism (Tom Kenny Mussolini is crazy btw), and of course the stop-motion animation is really quite excellent. Always love to see movies made in such a way. [4★]
61/62) Sonic and the Secret Rings/Black Knight (Games, 2007/2009)
Yeah, I get why the storybook duo of games have a bad reputation, because the motion control gimmicks kinda suck, but Secret Rings suffers from it far more than Black Knight, and that still has the cool ideas and solid writing combined with a great soundtrack (both games have this). Maybe the mission-based level structure isn't great, but there's some fun stuff to be found in these. Wish they were better though. [2.5★/3.5★]
