I feel like the gender dynamics are a major part of the widespread fascination with taylor/travis tbh but would be curious for your thoughts if you feel comfortable sharing

i'd be interested in your thoughts tbh. my very summarized thoughts are that... the world loves a prom king and queen like travis and taylor because at the end of the day, our (general) view of gender is still very traditional. and it's great that they are a power couple but they also still neatly slot into our perception of gender in het relationships.

ie, travis is extremely masculine (in looks, career, wealth, status), but he's emotionally evolved, which makes him very appealing. but the masculinity is still essential to the appeal. (this is what got me in trouble last time sooooooo i am bracing myself here.)

actually, taylor and travis both subvert a big part of their expected gender roles: travis is a very masculine but emotional guy, "written by a woman." taylor is very feminine, but she's also extremely ambitious, career-minded, and wealthy.

so their relationship is extremely traditional in a lot of ways but i also think about how their financial/career equality makes them a power couple. and even the term power couple is full of gendered expectations.

Most probably a guy will come in, they will offer you something, an idea maybe? (Altho be fucking careful, this whole situation is very effy). I genuinely dont know what's happening... like legit this group confuses the fuck out of me, so idk if u should take this offer... dont get desperate and i know u r desperate but it's almost like the cards are telling me to tell you to not trust this person but to use their idea. Almost like listen to their advice and take their advice but not with them in the plan..

Im gonna give u an example so u understand; you live in an abusive household, and u wanna escape it. Listen, Polin has been my Roman Empire for months now, but this fandom is WILDIN’.

Chunks of this fandom who claim to be Polin fans seem to hate either Colin or Penelope and I’m just like… why are you here, then, if you refuse to empathize or even TRY to understand either critical half of the pairing?

“Colin can’t see what’s in front of him and he insulted her in front of his peers!! GROVEL; I hope Pen moves onto Debling!!!”

First of all, you’re not a Polin fan if you hate Colin so much you want her to move on to someone else. Second of all: yeah, no. Yes,Colin put his foot in his mouth, arguably in a big way because of status, but plenty of people in real life have experienced saying something that came off poorly to a group of people. Everything we know about Colin’s character tells us he is going to feel horrible about it; he’ll apologize, MEAN IT, and she’ll forgive him. She has her own apologies to make.

Believe it or, it is NORMAL for people to grow into romantic feelings slowly. Stop punishing Colin for discovering who he is by experiencing his own character arc with his own mistakes. He’s allowed to have flaws; he’s allowed to work through his insecurities!

Tbh, most of the criticisms I see of Colin are pretty surface-level and petty, so I don’t give them much real estate in my brain because they’re just… bad, lol.

On the flip side -

“Penelope feels entitled to Colin’s feelings; she’s selfish and the fucking worst!!”

S3 Penelope: *overhears Colin say he would never court her; BELIEVES him - decides she’s going to stop wasting her time, move on, and look for a serious suitor and marriage prospect a) as is expected of her in this era and b) so that she has security, especially considering her family’s dire financial straits.*

“Oh my GOD, this is so anti-Polin, how could she POSSIBLY even THINK about accepting a proposal from anyone but Colin?! GTFO”

SIGH, 1) we have NO IDEA how this plot line is going to pan out: Lord Debling may or may not be serious about her, we don’t know what that even looks like, or for how long. The show synopsis historically likes to play with the fandom expectations a lot. He may possibly propose… and if he does, it would clearly exist as a sort of parallel to S1…. but 2) GOD FORBID Penelope entertain the idea, despite very real fears and evidence that would lead her thinking it would likely be her ONLY proposal… or that even if Colin proposed post heavy-petting session, how on EARTH could she think that he would be doing it out of honor-bound obligation and not love. 🙄 Her potentially considering a proposal isn’t anti-Polin; it’s a realistic response and consideration to two (and likely an additional half) seasons worth of external and internal stressors that are tying into her character development.

Penelope’s heart is fragile for a multitude of reasons due to her home life, her prior experiences with Colin and Eloise AND the rest of the ton - it’s incredibly frustrating for people to ignore why she would potentially not believe Colin even if he DID confess / give her a marriage proposal, just like it’s frustrating when people don’t try to understand why Colin might struggle with his own feelings.

Some of y’all really don’t understand people like Penelope who have been told their entire lives that they are not enough, are terrified of putting themselves out there by being emotionally vulnerable and potentially rejected for the fundamental aspects of who they are… even though some of y’all claim to identify with Colin when he has his OWN STRUGGLES WITH SOME OF THESE SAME FEARS. And it’s almost worse because Pen is painfully SHY: You don’t just magically become confident one day because you decided to be; it is a constant battle against negativity that eventually becomes heavily internalized… it takes years of work unlearn those thought patterns, especially when you’re surrounded by people insulting and rejecting your to your face (her family) or behind your back (the way the ton talks about her family… it’s likely Pen heard gossip about herself, whether individually or as an extension of her family PLENTY)… with an added dose of also being ignored when not actively insulted.

It would not shock me at ALL if Penelope genuinely considers a Debling proposal. All of Colin’s actions in S1 and S2 have ultimately taught her that he is never going to return her feelings; she is likely going to be pretty oblivious to his own romantic realizations this season because why would she look for or entertain those hopes again? Some of y’all complain that she is selfish about Colin’s romantic feelings (which lol, I disagree strongly, but sure hypothetically, I’ll allow it) … so then when she tries to move on by listening to him and his actions she’s suddenly… punishing him and undeserving of him?? When she would have every reason to be skeptical of these feelings coming from seemingly nowhere when he starts of the season trying to find her a husband? NAH fam, she’s doing what anyone with any sense of emotional self-preservation would do: move on and try to be content, even if she knows she’ll always love Colin in her heart.

AND even if Penelope develops potentially fond feelings for Debling… do you really think it’s unrealistic for a 19 year old young woman who has done nothing but pine over a man who is oblivious to it (or worse, finds a romantic relationship with you laughable… in her eyes), who has not had ANYONE be romantically interested her… to maybe get a little fluttery around someone who is reasonably nice looking and shows her genuine interest right off the bat? Spoiler Alert: that is probably exactly what would happen because it’s a heady feeling!!!

This entire plotline is either a parallel to the Marina situation, or a reference to the book line that basically has Colin going “Oh shit, what if I had never realized Pen is the love of my life?? What if someone else had seen how amazing she was and snatched her up??” - Maybe it’s even both! Deep breath: it’s a just plot device for Polin to realize they’re made for each other.

Colin and Pen are going to be on their own journeys this season that fly in the face of what the other is going through. Colin is grappling with newfound romantic feelings for Penelope (while likely struggling to trust them because he thought he loved Marina but lol no he didn’t, so how is he supposed to know???) while also battling against former (and potentially current) impulsive actions… and Penelope is fighting for her LIFE trying to bury her feelings and move on because she’s trying to protect her heart because Colin literally said out loud he’d never want her AND she’s likely thinking of her security. They are both grappling with internal conflicts that oppose the other and THAT is what is going to make the tension and development so good… and that’s without even addressing all the LW stuff that needs to get worked through!

I need y’all to flex that empathy muscle a little and realize that this isn’t about fucking fan-service, or you projecting your own experiences onto these characters (or even the weird self-insert “I am/want to be this character” or “I want to fuck this character”) - you can relate to these characters but ultimately it’s about the STORY - it’s about exploring these characters realistically in how they would react to their own traumas and lived experiences, and how what they think they want/need comes into conflicts with their counterparts.

This is a romantic DRAMA, and these characters are going to have their ups and downs… and it’s a Shondaland drama for better or worse, so you KNOW it’s going to get messy (good lord just look at S2 and how far that “love” triangle went… I’m hopeful for the new show runner because she’s a fan).

Polin will be canon because they unreservedly CHOOSE the other and it will be glorious, so everybody chill the fuck out and stop shitting on my imperfect, emotionally fragile yet beautifully relatable, evolving lovers. They are the BEST fucking ship, but most of this fandom doesn’t deserve them tbh. They’re both messes in their own ways, and honestly? If they were real, neither Colin nor Penelope would tolerate this slander y’all are throwing at the other.

LEAVE COLIN AND PENELOPE ALONE AND LET THEM MUDDLE THEIR WAY TO TRUE LOVE. 🤬

Something I’ve seen people criticise about the Percy Jackson tv show so far (including myself tbh) was that Gabe wasn’t as bad as he was in the books and they’ve “toned down” his abuse. He isn’t physically abusive like in the books, he never actually hit Percy but it’s implied that he does hurt Sally when Percy’s at boarding school, and I’m sure this was to make the show more child-friendly but I don’t think Gabe is “just an asshole” now. I think they just changed the kind of abuse he does. This might also be the reason Sally is less passive and stand up to him more (but we know she has stood up to Gabe at least once in the book).

Gabe is emotionally and financially abusive. We don’t know much since he wasn’t in much of the first episode (I’m assuming we’ll find out more as the show continues) but we do know that 1) he answers Sally’s phone + owns the car and 2) he doesn’t work but still gambles (like in the book, just online this time). Him answering Sally’s phone is a sign that he’s probably very controlling over her. This is added by the fact that despite her being the sole earner, Gabe owns the car.

The fact that Gabe doesn’t work (Percy says Sally is the only one employed) is a departure from the book where Gabe worked as a manager for an electronics store or something. This might signal financial abuse because he gambles Sally’s single income away. Gambling online might mean he gambles far larger amounts than he would with just his friends (like he does in the books) and on one income, that’s a big deal. There may only be enough money left to pay the bills and stuff or Sally has to work even more shifts to pay the bills because he gambles everything away. In the book, Sally works at a candy store at Grand Central and whilst we don’t know her job at this moment in the tv show, we can assume she works the same job meaning she’s got a low salary. This means Sally can’t afford to get away from him because he gambles all their money.

I’m sure we’ll learn more as the show continues but these are my thoughts about Gabe after thinking about his character for the past few days. I could be wildly wrong but for now, I feel confident in my opinions (mostly at least). I think some people forget we’re only 2 of 8 episodes into this season and so stuff that’s been left out so far could be revealed later and so judgements on character development and plot points should wait until later. There’s literally only 2 episodes so far.

Despite everything, Dally has a strict code of ethics for things he personally considers important; honour amongst thieves (greasers), loyalty to the gang, doesn't throw others under the bus, never cheats at jockeying, considering he gives Sylvia a ring which symbolises being 'Dally's' I don't think he's a cheater (this one is just me and that doesn't erase any other possible problems). It's the very reason Johnny admires him and calls him gallant.

So I think if he ever did find himself with a baby (his own, tbh I don't think Dally would give a shit about some random baby), he'd feel obliged to be there for it and fulfil his responsibilities. Whether this means financially supporting them, teaching them to become tough and strong (if a boy), protecting them and being strict with them (if a girl, because it's the 60-70s, gender biases and stereotypes are common; definitely the kind of dad who tells his daughter not to be a slut), etc. He'd definitely be a flawed father but he's still one.

Johnny, on the other hand, just wouldn't want a child ever imo, even though he could be a good parent. He's emotionally intelligent and observant, we see him take on a protective role with Pony and taking care of him, etc. But it's different from with anyone in the gang because they're more or less equals and look out for each other. They've built and strengthened their bonds through life and its hardships and have chosen each other. A random baby or child means nothing to him. He's not going to be mean to it or anything and would want the best for it but he would never want to take responsibility for one.

Now that the final SoKP episodes have passed thru my eyes... Things I miss from the novel:

* Sorry but Jiang Xuening should have killed You Fangyin's murderer with her own hands.

* Jiang Xuening becoming obsessed with Xie Wei's cooking, such that she loves to quietly hang out in the kitchen with him whenever there's a break in the scheming. It's their safe space.

* Jiang Xuening going from being in the palace and part of the target/victims of the rebellion in Life 1 to being one of the financial backers of it in Life 2 and accompanying their fighting forces as they move up through the country as Xie Wei outsmarts the emperor & Xue family & Lord Pingnan's forces at the same time. Spending her 2 years away building the capital needed to help spearhead the rescue of the princess and then go to fuck up the emperor who sent his sister a letter to end her life for the benefit of the country.... (chef's kiss)

* The glorious revolution and making the royal family kill each other to save themselves in order to demonstrate the type of people they are

* Jiang Xuening moving into Kunning Palace at the end, as basically the unofficial minister of finance. She ended up in the same place at the end, but hearts & minds are changed and so the result is different

* Jiang Xuening putting the pieces together that the princess died in the 1st life due to her pregnancy & the emperor cutting ties (intrigue!) Team Fuck The System helping her safely give birth to her son, who she loves despite his origin. Our fav lesbian never has to get married to another dude and can just chill with her son, the cabinet of ministers, and her Ning Ning (with psycho husband in tow, but hey nobody's perfect 😂). Using her power to spread schools for women's literacy with Xie Wei terrifying the detractors into submission.

* When they try to use the Jiang family in the capital to threaten XW and he's like, so what? I was gonna pay back those bastards next for Ning'er so you're saving me time lmaaaaaaoooo

* Speaking of which tbh I prefer the lack of a last ditch bandaid on the Jiang family relationship. She's let all of the pain of the past go and isn't personally seeking to take anything away from them in this life... but she is just done with it. Dad is nicer but he's let his wife behave like this and has been mostly hands off. Feels sorta like Story of Minglan to me - letting the favoritism & emotional abuse happen while playing nice guy. In both novel & drama, he spends years not protesting how Jiang Xuening is cast as the troublesome, uncouth, inferior model. But then the drama decides to rehabilitate them. (Though to be fair, even the drama was half-hearted on this 'wash', cause at the end she's mentioning they're not close and in the last scenes the parents are with the sister and Ning'er is with her found family.)

Improvements in the drama:

* I liked that we got to see Jiang Xuening tell multiple people that she loves XW before she gives him her answer. The angst of it being uncertain what conversations she's having with the princess & ZZ, the risk that she's going to abandon XW for being a hot mess... it made for good dramatic tension in the novel. But for the ROMANCE and creating a sense that the feelings he has are truly returned... It makes the ship better.

* The relationship that FL and ML had with the fake Xue Dingfei was richer. He was a standout for me.

* Yan Lin had a happier ending. He really stole my heart in this 2nd life and like Jiang Xuening I felt no need to see him haunted by his vile actions in another universe. It was emotionally satisfying in the drama to see him at peace. You got us all rooting for him.

* Consolidated the Lord Pingnan plot! We really didn't need to get into their factions and introduce more antagonists.

* Consolidated the You Fangyin romantic interests - no need for a marriage of convenience with 1 dude and then Xie Wei's buddy also carrying a torch.

* I felt like the drama gave Zhang Zhe more personality and I did find it delightful when he was "fighting" side by side with Xie Wei.

* Xue Shu (the Xue daughter) felt like a more developed, fully realized antagonist.

* As much as it "sings" in the narrative to have her end up in Kunning Palace with power in the government at the end of the novel (that was brilliant)... maybe emotionally it spoke to me more to see her initial wish from the start of her rebirth fulfilled. Her original reborn goal was to avoid reentering the palace & exit-out of everything to have a quiet life of peace. None of that power ever made her happy.

* Marriage scenes of the otp thank uuuuuuuuu

* No and actually.. After her royal marriage in the 1st life she definitely doesn't need another big celebration. And with her messed up family relationships and his dead parents... Them doing the marriage ceremony all on their own, cause it's another pact between them, makes a lot of sense and I dig it.

* The reverse callback of whispering while she's waiting for a kiss to say "I'm yours" instead of "get out" 👌👌👌

I had not heard of that song before, and I love how it represents the cycle of abuse, especially through the act of gift giving.

As for whether this fits the batkids, it depends on one's perception of Bruce. Is he the type to constantly buy his children's affection? He has money he can throw around and isn't afraid to do it. Would he use his money to buy every monetary need of his children while also hoping to wield it as proof of his love?

I personally think it fits. For Dick, he lives in crappy apartments in Bludhaven because he can be financially independent from Bruce that way. There's a bit to analyze there with their relationship, but it's understandable to want to provide for yourself at a young age if your guardian constantly uses money as a means to control you.

For Tim, this song might relate to his bio parents and Bruce. While Jack and Janet weren't necessarily physically abusive, they were emotionally neglectful (Jack after the coma was portrayed as emotionally abusive). They could have provided Tim with gifts and luxury to try to excuse their absence. If Tim had complained, they could have guilted him with the things they bought and provided. Others around Tim would have berated him as well if he said he'd rather have his parents than expensive skateboards (or whatever his parents gave him).

The shitty part is the vicious cycle one can find themselves in until they are financially independent. There's the fight and anger and emotions that occur. The cooldown. The appeasement (in love bombing and gifts). The gaslighting, blaming, and guilt tripping ("I only got so mad at you because of what you did," "I apologized already," "I didn't yell at you,"). The fight again. The stages can get mixed up, but it happens again and again.

If one wants to speculate, they can add this as another reason Tim made up a fake uncle (whether from his experience with his own parents or from Bruce).

I have a song similar to this, but from the viewpoint of the abuser. "This is Love" by Air Traffic Controller details what gaslighting might happen and the dangers hidden by a person claiming "this is love" despite what they are doing not being that.

There's various kinds of abuse and tactics used. Stay safe, y'all.
