One problem with irrevocably hating him is that it's not like there isn't fic tropes where a party has unrequited love but settles for dating someone else and sublimates. Just usually it's one of the otp, so our sympathy is with that character and it's all "justified" in the end because eventually it's revealed to be #Actually Requited Unrequited Love. We don't often stand in the shoes of the person who was dated by someone deeply infatuated for another & is only a 'stand-in'.
Like ok in the case of Unknown - several people in fandom have commented that probably Yuan dated or hooked up in the 4 years he was in NY. If that happened, it's likely he picked someone who reminded him of Qian.... but we're not thinking about how that person would feel. We're thinking about what this means for Yuan.
That's why I'm intrigued by the concept. It flips a toxic scenario from the way we often look at it in fanfic/dramas.
Now let me make one thing clear: I will not defend Ming. That man is fucked up. I will probably also curse him multiple times throughout the show. But do I hate him? The short answer is no. I just think he's really - like really - stupid.
And I will feel bad for him at one point. There, I said it.

I love the angsty set up of,
wow how could I get so lucky, this is too good to be true *happy sigh*
narrator: it was, in fact, too good to be true

Heheheh this is the toxic set up I like!
I mean, if he's only banging/dating you because you look like his unobtainable crush, nothing good is gonna happen.
Finished first ep and so far it's vvvv close to the novel, yay!!!

tgcf is like if xie lian was faced with the trolley problem every single day and every day he said "i'll choose a third option!" and that option was throwing himself in front of the trolley to stop it but instead it flips over and kills/maims everyone on both tracks and xie lian himself

what's the opposite of a daddy kink? like, if a fictional character reminds me at all of my dad in any way - instantly unfuckable. unable & unwilling to envision this man having sex or being the object of sexual desires; his naked body is dead to me rip.

Nothing in the last few years of cdramas will ever be as jaw droppingly glorious as Ling Buyi’s “father’s” party which can be summed up as:
Dad: what did you bring me for my birthday present, son?
Ling Buyi: wholesale family annihilation, UNCLE!
If Hamlet was half as decisive and bloodthirsty, the play would have a happy ending and be about 30 minutes long.

I'm not an expert but I've seen some confusion, so here, in a few words:
Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red Moon Pact, starring Gong Jun and Yang Mi. Is supposedly gonna air first, even though chronologically, it happens last (or at the same time as Sword and Beloved). Happy Ending for sure.
Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Love in Pavillion, starring Liu ShiShi and Zhang Yunlong (have never seen them in anything, but heard great things). Is the story of the parents. Gong Jun's mother (played by Shen Yue) is second FL and is sisters with the main FL. We know for sure the main couple will have a son but who knows about happy ending. This will likely air after Red Moon Pact.
Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Sword and Beloved. Starring Cheng Yi and Li Yitong. Cheng Yi is the son of the main couple in Love in Pavillion and is cousins with Gong Jun lol This is still filming or wrapped recently, so don't hold your breath on this one. It will air next year at the earliest.
For reference, Red Moon Pact wrapped production in late 2022 and it just got airing license.

I totally agree that uncle emperor killed Prince Ling actually because of Yanxi. He let the treason slide this long, what changed was Yanxi returned & obviously couldn't let what happened to his mom go. Plus Yanxi being pulled back & forth between palace and house, pulled between dad & uncle like in that family banquet. With Yanxi back in front of him, as the uncle who felt this is the one family member who doesn't want to replace him, who he raised (who he cultivated personally!)... he really couldn't stand the idea of competing for that loyalty/affection.
The emperor both couldn't have it that Yanxi murdered his father, because then killing a family member was a line that Yanxi crossed. And that would turn him into a potential threat and things would never be the same. But the emperor also couldn't stand the idea that their relationship could weather such a betrayal and that kind of filial loyalty could exist between them - as you say, he wants to be the only sky for his nephew. So the emperor takes the revenge for him.
Using the chestnut cakes!!!!!! The cakes he had brought to child!Yanxi to comfort him about his dead mom, he uses to troll & torment his mom's murderer before killing him in the same way she died. Based tbh.
The emperor gets a little poetic in his big gestures to Favorite Nephew. First round in adulthood, he called back baby boy to the palace to hide behind a screen in the throne room to hear himself framed for treason... And then the emperor publically rejects the idea by way of familiarity (I taught him to write MYSELF) & has the commander of his special sevice basically beaten to death as his officials watch. The untouchable guy everyone feared went out like that.
Yanxi gestured back by cutting his face to prove he doesn't want to be crown prince - (I don't need to amass power, uncle, I have you in my corner)(you trust me, I trust you)
Another ritual of trust games was the investigation into the mother's death. In most other dramas, I'd expect he's hiding the investigation from everyone. But the surprising reveal that he wasn't! He made no efforts to hide it from his uncle and says openly, I don't lie to you, I've got this secret agenda. And the emperor is like, all right I got you. Doesn't impede him in any way. In return, Yanxi doesn't hide what he finds. Then he obviously wants to kill his dad, for both the mom AND his sister - and this is where he feels betrayed, because the emperor grounds him to chill out and tells him not to take revenge. Which bothered me when I watched it, because I was like... wait. wtf is the emperor doing?! This was an Unspoken Fucked Up Trust Game Thing you had going on here. Uncle, you broke the rules!
That's when uncle emperor waits for Yanxi to leave and immediately tells the eunuch they're gonna serve justice. Because OF COURSE. Of course this itself was another level - the emperor wanted to see Yanxi being filial to HIM by obediently making peace with that monster, because his uncle asked him to.... trusting the emperor knows best, after being being put in a cruel "time out". But Yanxi did it, he really did force myself back to that house. And though he gripped his sword, he mastered his rage and didn't act against his father.
And his uncle rewarded him - paid into the unspoken trust when Yanxi opened this investigation without hiding it, that he'd have his resolution.
They're fucked up & toxic & fascinating to me. It's a damned shame that the ML's acting isn't elevating the material.

Heroine's common sense is pretty delightful.
Also this? Yikessssss, Yanxi, yikes!!!!

Someone import a therapist or perhaps a self-help book for this dude about not doing what your abusive father figure wants even if you don't want it so as to try to please them. ENMESHED IN THE WORST WAY OMG.
Honestly, I love her.

Aaaand she dumps him. Yeah, it's supposed to be so emperor won't have a lever against him to make him do crazier and crazier things to prove empy is stll n1 for Yanxi but I'd also like to think it's self-preservation on her part - nothing good would come of being enmeshed with that psycho an in-law!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A delightful paradox - empy punished the Shens extra because Yanxi pleaded for them so if Yanxi is unattached and heartless he actually doesn't have to do as much heinous stuff. And once Yanxi mentions to the emperor he and FL broke up, emperor is all "awwww, that's too bad, oh you can let Shens go now." It's beginning to occur to me that he didn't kill Yanxi's dad for treason per se, but because he wants to be the only sky for his nephew and he's gonna fuck him up until he gets there and stays there. That is fascinating. Honestly, there are bones of a truly interesting, dark and dysfunctional story here, buried by a surface, inconsistent script and lacking acting.
