Thinking out loud about the meaning of “(Not) a Devil”
(For the sake of this post, the angel in black will be nicknamed “Angel”, and the demon in white will be nicknamed “Devil”.)
I’ve passively wondered what, exactly, makes Angel and Devil the species they are. The point to them is their contradiction, of course; Devil is clad in white and has more ‘upbeat’ lyrics on the surface, and Angel is clad in black and has lyrics that are more ‘bad’-sounding. So, what exactly is being judged to make them their species?
I think that Devil is marked as evil because of she lies to hide the ugly truth, and Angel is marked as good because she is honest about her flaws. I also think that they represent the internal conflict of one person.
For Devil, she downplays…
“No worries, everything’s fine!”
“This contract is “just in case””
… And straight-up lies about…
“This is just a silly joke song”
“Calm down, that’s just a rumor”
… Herself, and the world around her.
Her solo in the middle of the song is all about this; knowingly lying to others, saying “It’s for your own good,” and that “Your dreams can come true” while knowing that their salaries will be exploited. She acknowledges that she is lying to and tricking these people (“Ah, highly addictive things always hide a trap”), but seems to insist that she’s not doing any wrong in her insistence that, “You overlooked the TRUE angel!”
She’s doing it for what she believes is others’ own good, but she still lies to and manipulates others. That’s what makes her a demon.
As for Angel, she describes herself as only being a “part-time” patrician (aristocrat), but immediately follows that lyric up by admitting that, really, she’s just a plebeian who only preaches to herself. That she’s “drained, oh-so drained” from living a lie, and “introspective and in prayer,” which implies internal conflict.
After describing herself as in “another clandestine rendezvous with myself”, Angel then goes on to say, “I guess we need to break up”, which implies a break-up with herself. And immediately after that line, Devil begins to sing; reassuring those around her that this song isn’t serious. I think this is meant to imply that these two are the same person. This, on top of the line, “Both devil and angel? That’s archangel-level stuff!”, which implies that Devil and Angel are both one being, which is what makes it ‘archangel-level’.
Angel’s solo is all about how her halo, and how it tightens around her neck to choke her. She lies, but it’s only in order to get her halo to loosen; we’re supposed to understand Angel’s reason for lying. She’s sympathetic. And then, her next lyrics…
“Let’s cover-up in white paint, get lost in the part and play / It gets easier when you lie, go on, try it”
Seems to be referring to Devil, because of the specific lines calling out someone dressing up in white to get lost in lies, and a part they play.
So, Angel is a sympathetic figure who is honest about her flaws. She does bad things, of course, but she admits to it and doesn’t try to dress it up. That’s what makes her an angel.
However, I do think that Devil is supposed to be sympathetic, as well. Specifically because of the line, “Though you may doubt me, though you may hate me”, followed by Angel seemingly taunting her with the line, “Smile and play the part, Angel, Angel.” We know that Devil considers herself ‘the true angel’, so we can assume that this is Angel poking fun at her. Devil is saying that those around her don’t like her because she’s a demon, and Angel is saying, “Oh, just smile and play the part, like you always do, since you’re so perfect.”
This emphasis on “playing a part” has me thinking that the person who they make up is doing just that.
Outwardly, they are more like Devil; they lie to others to hide ugly truths about herself, possibly in relation to religion (which explains the Abrahamic religious motifs in the lyrics). Playing their part, faking a smile.
But inwardly, they know their flaws, they know that they’re covering up everything in white paint. But, like Angel expresses with loosening her halo with her lies, she doesn’t feel safe if she doesn’t lie. “It gets easier when you lie.”
I also think that it’s possible that the person who Angel and Devil make up is in love with someone. A theme of romantic love is very prominent in the chorus of the song, and I don’t think that’s for no reason. This love is something that Angel, the one more honest with herself, is alright with and wants to indulge in (“Don’t we all want to be loved?”), but which Devil, who hides ugly truths with pretty lies, seems against (“If you’re still gonna be hooked, if you’re still gonna fall in love…”).
We don’t really know a lot about this romantic love plot, though, as the song is mainly focused on Angel and Devil’s contradictory natures. But the presence of these lines in something as important as the chorus makes me think that perhaps it is what started this internal conflict.
So, basically, TLDR:
Devil is a demon because she lies to cover up ugly truths, while Angel is honest about her misgivings. That is what made them both their species.
The two of them represent the internal conflict of one person, who is outwardly lying like Devil, but who is internally Angel, in that they know their flaws, and want to be more honest about them (but feel like they can’t out of fear). What this person is exactly lying about is not clear, but it is seemingly about themself, and/or their religion (which would explain the religious motifs).
This internal conflict was seemingly kicked off by this person gaining romantic interest in a person.
The song is all about this internal conflict, and the contradictions present in this person’s outward self and inward selves.
WOW, this ended up longer than it had any right to be. Can you tell that this song occupies a lot of my brainspace?
