💫what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback?

This might be hard to explain, but the comments which "get" what I've tried to say in a piece of work. I think most people in fandom are just reading for fun, which is fine, but it tends to only be a few people who really dig into the deeper themes that I was touching on. Quite a lot of the time these topics or themes are important to me in some way, so when people notice them, it makes me feel seen, would be the best way to put it.

🌈is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?

All of the longfics tbh, I put months before writing them just into outlining, but most people can probably see that. 😂 In terms of shorter ones that I struggled with, Beneath Still Waters was pretty rough for me, even though I really like the end result. It's darker than I usually go, so I was a bit worried about what my readers would link, but at the same time I've always loved gothic horror short stories, so I was agonising over making sure I wrote the genre well.

Howdy that is me ‼️

Chrysopoeia is a Haikyuu fantasy AU that I left unfinished from 2016, and I read the notes I had for it recently and remembered how much I adored the idea. So I want to pick it back up! The first 2 chapters are here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/5608300

The plot follows different houses of alchemist/magic users based off the different teams in the anime as they work to summon spirits for the crown for an unkown reason, while a revolution begins to brew from rumored spirits that have gone AWOL. Insert court intrigue, magic worldbuilding and whump, and a large web of character connections 💫

As for Hobbit fics!!! I have two projects I'm working on.

1) hello my old heart

This is a canon-compliant fic where Bilbo goes back to the Shire and tries to cope with his loss, along with raising Frodo, and over the years he begins to see the ghosts of three particular dwarves around Bag End. Cue sadness, emotional whump, and some healing squeezed in there hopefully! I've written a few pages for it, but the fic is mostly in the outline stages.

2) Our Future Days AU

This is the BIG BOY!!! It's my grand fix-it AU longfic where nobody dies and Frodo gets raised in Erebor and Bagginshield become girldads via cabbage patch hobbit babies 💫

It's also largely in the planning stages but I've written about 1k into the first chapter. The worldbuilding has been SO MUCH FUN and includes (but not limitied to): one spreadsheet to track ages and events, dozens of reference bookmarks, and a 60+ slide powerpoint to keep track of floor plans/layouts for various locations. I'm......maybe having TOO much fun with the worldbuilding and need someone to kick my ass into gear actually writing it 🥲

on a more serious note though I genuinely LOVE your writing so much- like, I’m not very confident in my own ability to Longfic TM, so I find myself subconsciously analyzing your writing style along with others to try and improve (you’re literally one of my writing inspos!!)

I love this plot concept so so much and the way the plot progressed throughout part 1 literally had me hooked from the start (are we just going to ignore the fact that Sampo had his house blown up at the beginning 😭??) anyways as a certified whump/angst enjoyer I rate this an 11/10

Literally any feedback that isn't, like, mean (which...I haven't actually received negative feedback yet, so hooray for that). I think the next year I'm covering in my longfic will actually be somewhat fun because I'm planning on writing more Leia-and-Han-bonding-on-missions stuff. And I'm just starting to get a plan together for another multichapter that I think will be fun to write as long as I get the tone right -- but that's in the super beginning stages, so I'm not sure when it'll see the light of day.

i mean, what author doesn't love long comments? ahfndhfdfd- but i know long comments is a bit of a cop out answer, especially since they take a lot of energy and not everyone can do it. i do really love comments that just- react viscerally! when people scream and sob! and i also love hearing about the things that they liked. like, you could honestly just quote all the lines you enjoyed and i'd eat it up. just... comments that get specific my beloved

in the end, i just adoooore getting comments in general tho fhdnfdhf, i love all the ones i get! if you've ever commented on something i've written, whether it's on tumblr or ao3, i love you <3

ohh this one is hard because most of my wips are kind of... paused atm? been mainly writing requests lately. i haven't started on the next longfic i wish to pursue ;;; that being said, the wips that are paused will eventually get posted, no? can't decide on one so i'll just show a few below the cut because it might get a little long!

i. i've had the "locked in the freezer" bingo prompt as a wip since... april, actually. this was my very first venture into writing twst. might have to rewrite a bit of it but i hope i can finish it someday. i just have one chapter left :') (surprise, it's not silver angst! or... diasomnia at all, really. which is probably why i keep slacking)

ii. a longfic i started a while back based off one of @olivebranch311's au, which we'd been talking about in dms ;u; don't know how much i can reveal atm apart from it being dubbed the containment breach au. something about researchers and inhuman entities.

iii. i'll post about my daemon au someday. i just... keep forgetting to write up the masterpost...

✨What's a fic you've posted you wish you could breathe life into again and have people talking about it? (or simply a fic you wish got more credit)

I have more than one answer for this question. Definitely Deathless, and The Sins of Heaven. Probably more. It sucks not being fandom famous anymore. Damn. I feel so pushed aside and irrelevant, so any of my darkfics getting life again would be fun. In the Dark never got life breathed into it for some reason, but god, it'd be awesome if that happened. And actually I just passed Three Birds, One Stone while scrolling to find In the Dark, so that one too.

Already answered, but the comments we used to do with each other's longfics where we'd take notes while reading and then post so it was like a liveblog.

💘Is there any posted fic you want to rework/re-edit/re-write?

If I had the time and patience and inclination, I'd rework Eucatastrophe from the ground up. There's a lot of it that, in retrospect, I wish I could have done better. Mainly stuff to do with the mirror-people, and the pacing at the beginning.

💫what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback?

I love analysis and speculation the most, tbh. When people are throwing around theories and/or connecting thematic bits to other bits, I'm having the best time.

💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

Characters, probably - a good plot can often be ruined by bad characterisation, worldbuilding is okay but a million times better with characters to drive it. I can forgive bad grammar and spelling if the characterization makes me happy enough, figurative language isn't strictly necessary, but god i love characterization.

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

I expected like, two people max to be interested in Syzygy. Because it's a niche fic for a niche pairing with an extremely niche concept and a very high wordcount. Needless to say, the amount of people who've been enthusiastic about it - in the comments, tags, and/or my inbox - has just been delightful. Thank you all.

💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it.

least kudos'd fic - the lavender for luck remix I did from Janus's POV! I really enjoyed taking the flip side of the limited perspective of that fic, and I think I nailed what I set out to do there - make a fic that would be satisfying to someone who read the original and wondered 'hey, what about Dee?'

🎙️which one of your fics would you like someone to make a pod-fic of?

The answer to that one is almost always 'the one I'm writing right now'. (Seriously. Mystery Longfic podfic would make me Yell.)

But actually, for real? I think Cassandra Fallacy would make a great podfic with a narrator who's willing to do a Janus impression and keep it up, relentlessly and to the point of being infuriating, for several hours.

uh, sword fights. through writing this i have discovered the EXTREME joy of writing sword fights (and gun fights) (janus brought a sword to a gunfight) (he's fine just full of hubris and one (1) hole in his skin) i don't know if you guys will enjoy reading them as much as i've enjoyed writing them, because it's notoriously difficult to write enjoyable fight scenes of any type, but........ i hope i'll get it right. because, as mentioned above, extreme joy.

It’s a tie between some kind of written, incoherent screaming and very detailed rants about what a person liked. Any comment will make me giddy like a school girl, but I will scream just a bit louder for those two

🦋what are you most insecure about when you post a fic?

Uhhhh all of it? 😅😅 If I were to get down to it, probably the fear that I haven’t actually written anything good. Somehow my descriptions didn’t give the right effect, or the mood is off, or I prattled on too long about one thing so the balance is off. The perfectionist in me wants it to be perfect and that leads to a lot of doubt. I’ve gotten better about managing that, but part of the reason the brain monkeys want validation so much is that I want to know if I actually managed to write the thing decent.

Okay so I just finished outlining the post-trespasser longfic for Ellana that I keep talking about but never write.

If I do it right, it’s gonna be emotionally devastating. I’m very excited.

Also at some point Zevran appeared and is now actually gonna have a major supporting role so that’s gonna be a trip.

You also are all gonna meet Ellana’s younger sister whom I adore but I have yet to write anything for.

💘Is there any posted fic you want to rework/re-edit/re-write?

Right now I am working on tightening up Encore, but the changes won't really affect the story itself.

There's a lot of stuff in W3 I wish I could change/rewrite, but those changes would be more substantial so I'm just learning to be happy with how it is.

To branch away from Mtl, every now and the I get the urge to rewrite my Fallout longfic. It would be my third time writing it (originally published in 2013 and rewritten in 2015) and I think I'm finally in a place with my writing where I could do it properly. In 2020 I wrote chapter 0 as a comic and every now and then I'll open the draft again, but eh. I have enough big projects.

💫what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback?

I love seeing people pointing out the little details in my stories or sharing their own interpretations/experiences. It's incredibly flattering and gratifying to know people are reading my work that closely and connecting to it.

I'm particularly excited for the way that I think my Hawk Goes Home (working title for the longfic) piece has been able to sit with the experience of unfixable loneliness (no spoilers but I swear to fuck it will have a good ending I realize that this does not sound positive as it stands). It was cathartic to write, and I sure hope it's cathartic to read. Relevant excerpt:

BJ had a few drinks downstairs, reluctant to go upstairs to the bedroom. He was hoping Peg would be asleep by the time he decided to turn in.

In the meantime, he listened to the radio, feeling odd and hollow and off balance. The old songs from the 30s and 40s made him melancholy, rife with longing for the nostalgic warmth of a life he’d never had. He frowned through a run of three songs he remembered Hawkeye singing in surgery.

He poured himself a few fingers of scotch, and leaned back in an armchair, his eyes closed.

The rain was bucketing, the air damp and cold. BJ couldn’t feel his toes. The body under his hands steamed, the red-purple shine of an exposed intestinal tract hot in his grip as he checked for perforations. It was his fifteenth or fiftieth hour. His third-ever marathon surgery in Korea. He was new, and green, and green. He was starved, but couldn’t bring himself to eat; watching Hawkeye passively chew a bite of a baloney sandwich by leaning back from an open abdomen, where a soldier’s punctured stomach leaked half-digested C-rations into the surrounding cavity, horrified him. He felt like he might cry, but knew he couldn’t. It might blur his vision at a critical moment in the surgery.

All at once he felt himself start to collapse. Not physically, but psychically, spiritually. Something internal and critical started to crumble, and his hands no longer felt like his own. His breath came in staggered, uneven gasps, his vision tunnelling. He couldn’t go on like this. It simply wasn’t possible. He wasn’t strong enough. This was the end of his road. He was going to snap, and his brain would gently, paternalistically separate him from reality for his own good, and he’d never get back. End of.

Hawkeye cleared his throat, and said something BJ didn’t hear.

Somebody touched his elbow, maybe. He didn’t notice. He was doing an incredible job with the surgery, he noted from a thousand miles away. His hands were amazing. They didn’t even need him.

“Someday I’ll meet you again,” somebody was saying.

No. Singing.

BJ glanced up, struggling to control the vector of his gaze.

“Tell me where, tell me when,” Hawkeye sang. He was no Frank Sinatra, but his voice was strong, and clear, and warm. It was the sort of voice you liked better than a radio voice, because you knew it really meant what it was singing. A voice with feeling, that was it.

“Each night I’ll wish on a star,” Hawkeye sang, catching his eye. He might’ve been smiling under his mask. It was impossible to tell. “That you stay as you are!”

“You have my heart, but my heart wonders when,” BJ joined in, trying to reach the high note that Hawkeye seemed to manage so effortlessly as the feeling returned to his hands, “we’ll meet again.”

Dear one, this is our fate! Partings and sad goodbyes, sang the Hawkeye in his head. BJ was beginning to suspect that he’d always live there, that there would always be one Hawkeye Pierce, frozen at age thirty, looking out from behind his eyes. Never changing, always charming and a little sad, until BJ was old and bent and eighty-nine. And the Hawkeye in his head would stay young forever. It seemed, somehow, exactly what he deserved.

Dear one, I’ll always wait—wait for that blue horizon! Hawkeye sang, two years distant.

Turner Layton played the piano beautifully, BJ thought. His chest was starting to hurt, so he socked the rest of his drink and turned the radio off. He stumbled getting up the stairs, his limbs loose and his head full of the past.

🎀 - ooouu okay um. Generally I’m pretty happy with the way I do dialogue! It’s at least one of the most fun parts of the writing process, letting each character bounce off each other, trying to get the voices right. I’m also kind of proud of some of the prose sometimes, specifically the flow of it - I like my writing to sound a bit like a poem sometimes, when read aloud. (Fun Game: read a chapter of txtFile and try to tally up how many times I use alliteration. I feel like I do it a lot and tbh I really like the effect it gives)

💫 - My absolute FAAAVOURITE thing ever is when people leave their theories in the comments of longfics. Watching ppl guess at how each part of the narrative might string together is so, so satisfying from the creator’s standpoint. It’s so entertaining watching people get it wrong and thrice as much watching people get it right. There is NOTHING that gets me grinning harder re: fic comments than someone just absolutely nailing it on the head (absolute torture tho when you can’t TELL them that bc that’s SPOILERS lmao). Also, anything along the lines of “I’m scared.”

💞 - It’s the love. Not in the slashfic sense - it’s the love of the characters, and the medium, and it’s the love of the art of making. Speaking for the fanfic scene, there are few things more fulfilling than being able to pour your time and energy into responding to something that meant something to you - be that a book or video game or anything - and then being able to share that with others, and all enjoy that love together. It’s about putting your own self into the stories that matter to you, and showing the world what that looks like through your eyes - showing people how YOU read the book, or watched the show, or played the game, is just this really soulful and personal experience that not much else can replicate.
