hello (from here) review!
REVIEW: Hello (From Here) by Chandler Baker and Wesley King
This book was sent to me by BookishFirst in a giveaway! Many thanks to BF and Penguin books for the free review copy!
TRIGGER WARNINGS: parental death, COVID-19, AIDS, generalized panic disorder, panic disorder, and racism. If any of these things upset you, maybe be a bit wary about this book. All of the warnings listed are very prevalent throughout the book. Take care of yourselves, bookworms!
This was such an adorable book that takes place in COVID-19 times. It was extremely relatable, and it really felt like all of the characters were real people. In fact, I was convinced that Arlo Oxley was a real celebrity, and was very disappointed to see otherwise when I looked him up 😂 Apparently, I'm really easy to fool.
Max and Jonah were both very likable and I enjoyed all of their scenes, whether it be together or apart. The anxiety representation was absolutely amazing and it never felt like it was romanticizing mental illnesses, which always feels like a breath of fresh air.
The ending felt so complete and it definitely ended right. There was one thing that happened that made me extremely mad at Jonah, but once there was backstory, he was back to being one of my favorite contemporary boys. All in all, I really liked this book! I look forward to reading more of both of the author's writing in the future!

✨✨REVIEW✨✨
Beasts of Prey by Ayana Gray~5🌟
This was an ARC that I won in a BookishFirst giveaway. Thank you so much to BookishFirst and the publishers for providing this copy for review! Definitely be sure to get this book when it releases in September!
I seriously loved this book so much. I loved that it was split between three main POVs, Adiah (first person, told in past), Koffi (third person, told in present), and Ekon (third person, told in present). It was such a unique reading experience!
Next is the writing style. 10/10! I loved Ayana's writing style so much! It really transports you to the world of Lkossa! I can't wait for the sequel!! Koffi and Ekon are such amazing characters and I want to be back with them so bad. The magic system was unique and you can tell it took a while to put together. It's so thought out and I really appreciated it.
The whole story/setting was very African inspired and it was brilliantly done! In the author's note, Ayana says that the language (yes!! There's a whole new language! Think Ravkan or Kerch from the Grishaverse) was based off of the Swahili language, which is such a cool language to build off of. I loved the addition of new plants (edible and deadly) and animals (mostly deadly) in the Greater Jungle. It made it feel like it was a real place.
The twist at the end... I will never get over it! It leaves the reader wanting more, and I was just in shock for the last 20 pages. I even started to tear up a little. Definitely be sure to read the trigger/content warnings (I'll post them in the comments!), and go preorder Beasts of Prey NOW!!!
(Swipe for synopsis! Sorry for the typo on slide two, it should say Shetani 🙃)

REVIEW: Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon
Date read: July 10th, 2021
Stars: 4.5/5
Let's start out with a quick little content warning for this book! There are discussions of divorce and death, so if that's upsetting to you, be careful and take care of yourself 💕   Wow! Nicola Yoon's books really never cease to amaze me! Her writing is so amazing and I've genuinely enjoyed every book she's put out thus far.    Instructions for Dancing is very fast paced, stuffed with loveable characters, and the twists are awesome! Evie is such a great character and I'd honestly love to read more of her story. X is really cool, too. From his first introduction, I knew I would like him!    This book is also very focused on Evie's parents separation, and even though I've never been through something like that, I could definitely sympathize with her. There's also a killer friend group. All of the characters are unique and loveable, and it's exactly what you need in a contemporary!

REVIEW: The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
Date read: July 7th, 2021
Stars: 4/5
This book was honestly such a wild ride. It was really gripping from the first line: "They've never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart." I mean, c'mon, that's epic.   It was a very fast read, which I really like for fantasies. The characters are all fairly fleshed out and likeable. I think I was a little mislead from the synopsis, thinking that the Shadow King was going to have The Darkling vibes, but in reality he was a 19 year old new king who was way less cutthroat than I was expecting. Once I realized he wasn't like that, though, I was able to get through it.    There was a lot of characters. I definitely mixed some of them up at some point. Especially when they all had fairly similar names (in my opinion) and while that was a tad complicated at times, it was still bearable.   I really liked Levenseller's writing style! It really helped to get across that while Alessandra is mature, she's still young and has opinions from both of those features.    The ending was very unexpected and while I wasn't the biggest fan of it, it was wrapped up nicely. I'm looking forward to reading her other books and the (possible?) sequel to TSBU! I believe it's about Alessandra's sister: Chrysantha. She wasn't in the book besides letters from her, but I am interested to see what her story is.

REVIEW: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
Date read: June 11th, 2021
Stars: 4/5
This has taken me such a long time to finally gather my thoughts, and I apologize for that! This book was really such a wild ride and it definitely took some time to figure out what was happening, but I think I've finally got it! I really appreciated that RQ went straight into action instead of a long, dragged out beginning. Sometimes slow beginnings of books really annoy me, so I liked that it was a quick start. The book as a whole was really fast-paced, so that was amazing too. I also really like Victoria Aveyard's writing style, which gives me a lot of hope for Realm Breaker! I really enjoyed the plot and the characters were, for the most part, likeable. Mare seems to be a very reliable narrator, which is great. I loved the divide between Red and Silver bloods- it gave me major Shadow and Bone meets The Hunger Games vibes. The only thing I really didn't like about the book (which now writing it down, probably won't make too much sense unless you've read it) is the constant never knowing who's good or bad. It got kind of frustrating at some points, and I don't really like to feel mad while reading. But, while it wasn't my favorite aspect, it made for some pretty good plot twists, which I always appreciate. Anyhow, I am going to continue with this series (I'm already around 200 pages into Glass Sword) and definitely read Realm Breaker soon! I really enjoyed this book and I'm excited to see where the rest of the story will go! MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD- I don't ship Mare with anyone at the moment, and I'm already ~200 pages into Glass Sword. Cal is probably the best option out of him, Maven (who I now very much dislike), and Kilorn (who seems like a nice guy, but whose name is horrendous), but I can honestly see her ending up with either of them. Soooo, uh, yeah. That's my review!
