Chủ đề của cả 3 tracks trong EP Goblin đều được lấy cảm hứng từ câu chuyện #TheWonderfulWizardofOz của tác giả L. Frank Baum. Theo như những gì Sulli chia sẻ trong showcase đặc biệt giới thiệu EP này thì “On the Moon” là một bài hát có giai điệu u buồn kể về cô bé có mối giao cảm đặc biệt với con búp bê của mình. (1)
Trong nguyên tác The Wonderful Wizard of Oz của #LFrankBaum thì không có câu chuyện hay nhân vật nào như lời bài hát mô tả. Nhưng trong phiên bản điện ảnh Oz the Great and Powerful thì #Disney đã sáng tạo thêm nhân vật China Girl - một cô búp bê sứ. China Girl là cô búp bê sứ duy nhất còn “sống” sau khi gia đình làng mạc của cô bị hủy diệt bởi một phù thủy ác, có điều cô không thể đi lại được do phần chân đã bị vỡ. Khi vô tình gặp Oz và được Oz dùng keo dán lại phần chân ấy, cô búp bê sứ nguyện ý đi theo giúp đỡ Oz tìm lại năng lực phù thủy, để từ đó cô có thể trở thành một cô bé bằng xương bằng thịt và có một gia đình để yêu thương. Sự gắn bó của chúng ta với búp bê - ngoài việc chúng chỉ đơn giản là một phiên bản nhỏ bé lý tưởng hóa của một con người - thực tế lại phản ánh nhiều khía cạnh trong phức cảm hành vi và thực hành văn hóa của con người.
Búp bê từ lâu đã được cho là có sức mạnh ma thuật, gắn liền với niềm tin tôn giáo, với các nghi lễ và cả truyền thống gia đình. Chỉ cần nhìn vào chức năng sử dụng búp bê như thế nào tương ứng với thời gian và địa điểm là ta có thể thấy sự phản ánh những phát triển toàn cầu lớn, những thay đổi xã hội và tác động của các sự kiện lịch sử quan trọng như nhập cư hay chiến tranh. Dù được sử dụng theo cách nào, như một món đồ chơi thông thường, một công cụ kể chuyện, một học cụ giáo dục hay để hỗ trợ về tinh thần cho con người trong những hoàn cảnh hoạn nạn - thì búp bê vẫn luôn giữ một vị trí quan trọng trong rất nhiều nền văn hóa khác nhau.
Tình cảm, sự tôn sùng của đứa trẻ đối với búp bê tương ứng với mối liên kết giữa người mẹ và đứa trẻ có lẽ là những ý niệm sớm nhất mà chúng ta từng gắn cho búp bê. Rõ rệt nhất là trong các giai đoạn biến động của lịch sử hay dấu mốc trưởng thành của đứa trẻ.
Từ xưa, các bậc cha mẹ đã sử dụng búp bê như một công cụ giải trí và giáo dục để giữ cho trẻ bận rộn hoặc dạy dỗ chúng về các vấn đề trong cuộc sống. Trải qua nghịch cảnh từ những chuyến đi dài ngày đầy nguy hiểm và thông qua những giai đoạn trưởng thành, những con búp bê đó đã đạt được đến một mức độ ý nghĩa cá nhân, có vai trò như người bạn đồng hành với trẻ em trong một thế giới mới lạ.
Tuy búp bê gốm sứ đã xuất hiện tại Trung Quốc từ 2000 năm trước công nguyên nhưng họ đã giữ bí mật sản xuất trong nhiều thế kỷ. Phải tới năm 1710 thì châu Âu mới bắt đầu khám phá ra các phương pháp tráng men rồi búp bê bằng sứ tráng men mới xuất hiện tại khu vực này. Thời đó phương pháp sản xuất chưa hoàn thiện nên các sản phẩm tráng men sau một thời gian sẽ có vết rạn, vết nứt khiến món đồ trở nên dễ bể vỡ.
Khi búp bê sứ xuất hiện những vết nứt, các bậc cha mẹ thời đó thường nói với những đứa trẻ rằng các vết nứt này xuất hiện là bởi búp bê sứ đã hút lấy những giấc mơ xấu khi con ngủ, đã giữ cho con tránh xa khỏi những tội lỗi và những bận tâm ưu phiền mỗi ngày. Đó cũng chính là chủ đề mà Sulli đã chọn để viết nên “#OnTheMoon”. (3)
“Cùng lên mặt trăng nào
Kìa em, sao trông em buồn thế?
Bé con, em có nghe thấy chị không?
Trên chuyến tàu tốc hành thiên hà chỉ có hai ta
Chị nguyện cầu cho chuyến tàu này sẽ chạy mãi chẳng ngừng

Vòng tay ôm chặt cô búp bê nhỏ, tôi chìm vào giấc ngủ
Nơi giấc mơ ngọt ngào ẩn hiện, nơi mọi nỗi sợ được xua tan
Qua đôi vai, cô bạn nhỏ đón lấy mảng ký ức không màu
Hô biến, rồi trả lại chúng với hình hài rực rỡ trong tôi

Cô gái nhỏ trong “On The Moon” có một cô búp bê bằng sứ, tin lời mẹ nên cô gái nhỏ cho rằng mọi giấc mơ đẹp mình từng mơ, mọi nỗi lo mình từng có đều được xóa bỏ nhờ cô búp bê sứ đó. Cô gái nhỏ không còn sợ những giấc ngủ, không còn đòi mẹ kể câu chuyện cho tới cái kết cuối cùng, mọi chuyện dù sao cũng sẽ ổn, nhờ có búp bê sứ. Rồi các vết nứt xuất hiện ngày càng nhiều, cô bé tự hỏi “Kìa, sao trông em buồn thế?” “Cô búp bê hạnh phúc ngày nào đâu rồi?”
“Chuyến tàu tốc hành thiên hà duy chỉ có hai ta
Nhưng giờ chị chỉ muốn thức dậy
Những tiếc nuối vương vấn còn đọng lại bao đêm
Cùng những mảng xám ký ức, nay đã trở lại
Từ sâu thẳm, những lời nguyện cầu thầm thì trong trái tim nhỏ bé này lại vang vọng”
…
Thế rồi sự gắn kết của cô bé với búp bê sứ đã vượt qua nỗi sợ hãi trong giấc ngủ, cô bé cho là chỉ cần mình thức dậy thì búp bê sứ sẽ không còn những vết nứt nữa. Khi búp bê sứ vỡ thành nhiều mảnh, cô bé tỉnh giấc giữa đêm và tin rằng mọi ký ức không đẹp cùng những nỗi sợ hãi bị kìm giữ trước kia đang dần quay trở lại.
Cá nhân mình rất bất ngờ khi biết #Sulli tự viết lời bài hát này, con bé còn biết sử dụng câu chuyện của chính mình trên nền câu chuyện của người khác nữa mọi người ạ. Có chơi đùa với câu chữ, có những đoạn rất khó chọn cách dịch phù hợp mà ngay cả khi đọc Engtrans mình vẫn không thấy thỏa mãn về ngữ nghĩa.
“사랑의 삶과 가장 거짓된 세상에
다정한 손짓 아래 의미를 담아”
(Cả Engtrans và các bản tiếng Việt mình từng đọc qua đều dịch hai câu này rất hay, nhưng vẫn chưa đủ, vì nó không chỉ mô tả mối quan hệ của đứa trẻ với búp bê mà nó còn thể hiện tâm trí non nớt của đứa trẻ khi nhìn ra thế giới bên ngoài.) (4)
Cần phải nói thêm rằng, tựa tiếng Hàn của On The Moon là #온더문, trong đó “문”/ “mun” ngoài việc là ký âm của “Moon” trong tiếng Anh, thì từ “문” trong tiếng Hàn có nghĩa là “Cánh cửa” (danh từ), khi dùng như động từ sẽ mang nghĩa “mím chặt môi”/ “trả lại”/ “trả nợ”/ “quy hồi”.
Và “#설리” “Sulli” ~ Có thể viết thành “Sully”, một danh từ mang nghĩa Buồn tẻ/ hoen ố/ xỉn màu. Khi dùng như động từ: Làm hỏng, làm ố, làm bẩn, làm mất giá trị, làm xấu mặt.
Vô tình hai ý nghĩa này hóa ra khá là match với nội dung của “On The Moon” thật... (5)

Cuối cùng là một review ngắn về #Dorothy mà mình vô tình thấy trên Reddit:
“Cá nhân tôi thích nhìn nhận các bài hát trong EP này giống như một câu thần chú. Câu thần chú mà bạn thường lẩm nhẩm để nhắc nhở bản thân rằng đâu đó trong bạn vẫn luôn tồn tại hy vọng. Nhân vật Dorothy trong bài hát cùng tên được định nghĩa bởi một danh sách gồm nhiều lời miêu tả khác nhau, những loại hình tính cách đối lập xung đột trực tiếp với chính chúng. Dorothy tràn đầy tình yêu, nhưng cũng không ít ghen tị. Cô nàng vừa là sa mạc khô cằn, đồng thời cũng là tảng băng trôi lưu lạc giữa đại dương. Cô ấy đa diện và chân thực, rụt rè và muốn tự giấu mình. Tất cả những điều trên đều là Dorothy. Giống như một loại thuốc cảm cúm, vừa đắng mà cũng lại vừa ngọt.
Mọi điều đều chỉ hướng cho thấy cô ấy cảm thấy trống rỗng, như thể chẳng còn hy vọng hay thiết tha điều gì. Thế giới này chỉ còn ngập tràn sự trống rỗng và những giấc mơ bị lãng quên. Nhưng ngay cả khi biết rằng thiên đường dành cho cô không tồn tại, thì Dorothy vẫn giữ hy vọng cho tương lai. Mặc dù hy vọng ấy nằm sâu dưới nước, lại khó tiếp cận, có điều nó vẫn sẽ ở đó.” (6)

Bởi vì câu chuyện The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) được ra đời tại Mỹ cùng thời với #Victorian Era tại Anh nên mình nghĩ những chi tiết sau đây cũng khá thú vị.
1. Chính tác giả của The Wonderful Wizard of Oz đã chia sẻ rằng câu chuyện này được lấy cảm hứng rất nhiều từ #AlicesAdventuresinWonderland (1865) của #LewisCarroll. Rõ ràng nhất có lẽ là bối cảnh một cô gái nhỏ muốn chạy khỏi hiện thực rồi rơi vào vùng đất thần tiên của trí tưởng tượng, các nhân vật tồn tại trong đó đều là hiện thân của những con người/ những hình mẫu có thật trong cuộc sống của cô. (7)
2. Cái tên China Girl trong phiên bản của Disney hoàn toàn không có nghĩa là Cô gái Trung Hoa, mà nên hiểu là Cô gái gốm sứ tráng men :)) Bởi công nghệ sản xuất gốm sứ tráng men thời ấy tại Châu Âu và cả Mỹ được phỏng theo phương pháp của Trung Hoa. Thời đó, gốm sứ đã qua công đoạn tráng men sẽ được thêm tiền tố “China”, người ta gọi China porcelain, China doll để xác nhận món đồ sành sứ đó đã được tráng men theo kiểu Trung Hoa. (3)
3. Không liên quan nhiều đến bài hát của Sulli nhưng vô tình lại rất #SMCU=)) Ấy là trong film #OztheGreatandPowerful của Disney có một đoạn thoại khá tối nghĩa, khi Oz được nhờ cậy giúp một cô bé phải ngồi xe lăn có thể đi lại được. Cô bé ngồi xe lăn là phiên bản thực của búp bê sứ, Oz tái tạo lại nhân vật này là bởi anh ta áy náy vì đã lừa dối cô bé, muốn hoàn thiện ước mơ của cô trong thế giới tưởng tượng.
