Hel (old norse) Hell(e) (old english)

Her name comes from a root meaning, covered or hidden kinda like Hades and Frau Holle, and like a helmet or a helm, which is also the name of the realm which she resides in Helheim (old norse=Hel) also meaning “the grave” or to be put in your grave this land is not a place of punishment like the Christian Hell, it was more of a waiting place where Lady Hel takes in the “unchosen souls of the dead”. Helhiem was believed to be guarded by a giant wolf it’s disputed whether it’s her brother Fenrir or another wolf named Garm, Helheim is in one of the nine realms which is Niflheim, her plate and knife are named “hunger” and “famine”

She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess (or a jötunn) Angrboða; her brothers are Fenrir (Vánagandr or Fenris) and Jörmungandr (Midgard serpent). Some don’t realize the gods and giants aren’t different races but different families and titles as Hel was born of a god/goddess parent she has the title of goddess but she can also be referred to as a giantess.

She appears as half-blue or sometimes some say it translate to black both mean she’s half corpse/rotting and the other half is a flesh colored beautiful woman, she’s known to appear to her followers as either or both if she feels the need to scare you or shock you she may come as her rotting side or if she wants to come off more motherly she may show up as her flesh side, some say she has white or black hair it varies to person.

She also had a 3 legged horse also known as “Hel-horse” a scrawny boney white/yellow horse which in the “prose edda” she brought plague and death

She’s said to lead an army of undead souls into battle during Ragnarok to fight in a valley against the undead warriors of valhalla (Old Norse: Valhǫll) aka the hall of the slain or hall of the corpse.

She appears in Baldrs draumar and the Voluspa in the poetic edda also known as the “Elder edda”.

In Baldrs draumar you see her when she refuses to give Baldrs soul back to the other gods and keeps him in Helheim unless everything in the universe weeps for his “death” (gods in norse mythology don’t “die” they’re reborn in a way) when one giantess refuses to weep Hel keeps Baldr in Helheim till Ragnarok. It was known she treated him fairly and even gave him a seat beside her as a guest of honor in her hall.

Ullr was another god who visited Niflheim often so he often visited Hel in Helheim.

Why she was thrown from Asgard is disputed; some believe it was due to her looks that she made the other gods uncomfy, or that like her brothers the Æsir gods condemned her before she really did wrong leading to a self fulfilling prophecy, or that Odin gifted the hall to her.

Hel is the queen of afterlife and the caretaker of the dead in some sources she was also the main god who made decisions on judgements for who received punishments in Helheim as not all who went to Helheim go as punishment and it was said that Helheim had 2 sides.

Cancer - upg, she’s “the one who hides or is covered”, since Cancer’s animal is the crab, and that is an animal that is covered by its hard shell. Many individuals that work with Lady Hel associate her with being motherly, but also strict. Cancer is the sign of nurturing, and emotions so it makes sense.

As for other zodiac signs, I would consider any zodiac signs near the end of the cycle. The zodiac cycle is associated with the cycle of life and death; so near the end of the cycle is going to be death. This could be signs like Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. There is no historical basis for this, as Norse Paganism didn’t really document or use zodiac signs.

RUNES HISTORY AND FACTS

There are many types of rune systems, including Younger Futhark, Anglo-Frisian Futhorc, Medieval runes, and Elder Futhark, which are the ones I’ll be talking about.

The Younger Futhark (long twig) has 16 runes and is typically used in translation with Old Norse. It was used in Scandinavia during the Viking Age, from 800 A.D to 1200 A.D.

Then you have Anglo-Frisian (Frisian being Dutch), which had around 30 runes and was used in Britain. It’s also known as Anglo-Frisian Futhorc.

The latest and closest to us is the Medieval Runes, which fall back into a 24 system (like Elder Futhark) with the Roman/Latin alphabet, which is also used in translation to Old Norse.

Finally, the Rune system we’re talking about is the Elder Futhark used in a 24-rune system and is used to translate proto-European languages (proto-Germanic, high Italic, proto-English, etc, NOT Old Norse!) None of the names of the Elder Futhark have truly been written down; they have come from reconstruction and guesswork from scholars. The names have come from Old English/Gothic sources and the Rune poems that feature names and pieces associated with names.

Norse=Runa English=Rune both meaning “a secret” or “mystery”

Old Norse=Rún Old Irish=Rún Middle Welsh=Rhin “to whisper” “secret” or “mystery”

Scots=Roun “To whisper” or “speak often about one thing”. It’s also associated with the Rowan tree in Scots, which is a very well-known magical tree in many folklores (also known as the “rune tree” or “the whisper tree”).

It was believed the Elder Futhark came from the Rome/Latin alphabet and had ancient Greek relations—due to the closeness of the Germanic tribes there and the mingling of Elder Futhark and High Italic.

The runes were not traditionally used as magical symbols. they were used in divination but were not considered magical themselves until later centuries, far after the Viking Age when they became popular as magical symbols. The furthest back they were found to be used was theorized to be Germania, as typically (but not always) female diviners would “cast lots” which were believed to later influence the Norse people to cast the runes. It was widespread for Norse kings, warlords, and explorers of this time to have a rune caster or diviner with them wherever they traveled. Diviners and Rune Casters at this time were well respected and always welcomed into people's homes.

Then in the myths, we find where Odin discovers the runes and shares them with the other gods. Later the gods share them with humanity. The god Odin stabbed himself with his spear, Gungnir, and hung himself from Yggdrasil for 9 days and nights without food or water sacrificing himself for the runes till they appeared to him in the Well Of Urd. This myth differs depending on the source you found it on. Then in the Havamal 80’ page, 31 of Jackson Crawford's translation of the Poetic Edda (elder edda), it states, “What you ask the runes will prove true; they are gifts of the Aesir, made by the gods and painted by Odin. You’ll learn best with your mouth shut.”

Bind runes

Bind runes are 2 or more runes combined to make one bigger Bindrune. Used historically as a way to shorten up writing or just as a fun way to write, we now use them as stronger versions of runes, or as a way to have many runes together without having to write them all out.

Famous ones, Vegvisir and Aegishjalmaur (Helm of Awe) aren’t runes or bind runes, but instead Sigils that came around centuries after the Viking Age, and were found to be from the 1800s. Vegvisir is a path finder, not a compass. The Helm of Awe is used as a warding symbol but historically wasn’t actually used for anything as far as our sources note.

🌿Plant Spirit Devotion: Herbal Altars

So this is alittle unorthodox but I've been keeping/tending an Altar specifically for my current Herbal Ally, atleast for the duration of my active devotional to that Plant Spirit (my post about Plant Spirit Devotionals). Currently my altar is set up for Rosemary pictured below. The Purpose of these altars is not to worship or revere the Spirit in the same way that my Persephone Altar exists to venerate the goddess. In my mind a Herbal Altar exists as a dedicated space for the spirit which acts as a reminder of the spirit throughout the day, while the aromatics of the Herbs themselves and the general energy of the Plant is allowed to suffuse the area.

My Rosemary Altar pictured above contains the following:

Fresh Rosemary: Personally I think the most important thing on a Herbal Altar should be the plant itself, ideally a living plant but when that is unavailable the best alternative is fresh plant matter.

Dried Rosemary: Failing fresh plant matter, dried herbs can work just as well.

Rosemary Essential Oil: An essential oil or similar product made using the plant represents the myriad forms the Herbal Ally can take in your Practice.

A Herbal Flash card for Rosemary: This card not only has beautiful artwork depicting the Herb but on the opposite side contains information revolving around Rosemary's mundane and magical properties allow with a short botanical dossier. This is a representation of the Plants properties and what you can learn from it.

An associated Tarot/Oracle card: In My case I like to have a representative Tarot card for my Herbal Allies, I use the Bottanical Deck by Jessica Bott which happens to have a Card for Rosemary.

A tea light candle dressed in Rosemary oil and dried Rosemary: A representative of the Herb role in rituals, and in my broader practice. I plan on burning this on the last day of my devotional.

Residence/Palace:

It’s very reminiscent to the forests of Northwestern U.S. but also the Canadian forests (Boreal Forests). He doesn’t have a palace per say, more like a secured area that he spends alone time in. He’s an adventurer, a nomad even, he explores and is on “the hunt” always. His “base” is close by a open body of water, unsure if it’s a lake or an ocean. Which ties into his seafaring, and water associations. Tall dark evergreen, pine, more commonly and abundantly spruce.

Days of the Week:

Monday - Northwest has strong associations and ties to the Moon due to the wolf symbolism. Because of this, the Moon is known to rule over emotions and intuition. To work with Northwest’s energy more on Mondays, tie into the current moon phase (research moon phase meanings) and set up a to-do list for Tuesday. This would be the stock up supplies, check inventory, and set plans to tackle adventuring and the rest of the week. Don’t let the day slip by, and make use of the time you have. Tomorrow is the day of action, so set plans today.

Tuesday - Mar’s day, the day of action, movement, and direction. If yesterday was using the base with Northwest, today is the first day of movement and energy. Set forth with the plans, set your sights on your goals. Focus, and drive toward them with as much energy as you can muster. Get the large and scary tasks on the to-do list done today! You’ll have the most momentum and energy behind you to back you up.

Moon - Has the most emotional connection to us. Controller of the tides, and since bodies have water in them, also controller of humanity (in some senses). The phases, and position of the Moon are very important in many cases. The Moon is the reflection of the illumination of the Sun, working alongside Earth’s shadow. The Moon in many cases is feminine, so it’s an interesting choice for Northwest. However, this is due to the wolf symbolism within himself. Working alongside the moon phases, is very important to Northwest. From Labyrinthos, the Moon is also responsible for the unconscious mind, instincts, habits, moods, and creativity. The most important for Northwest is instincts, and habits. The transit time for the Moon in astrological signs is 2-3 days, very reminiscent about how much a traveler he is. Not spending much time in one location for too long before moving onto the next.

Uranus - At first I didn’t understand his reasoning for Uranus, following suit of his days of the week I thought the secondary choice was going to be Mars. The revolution period of Uranus is slow, given it’s distance from the Sun. It’s rotation time instead though is surprisingly quick. A general consensus about Uranus, is that it’s an individual planet, on its lonesome, and rebellious. Known for eccentricity, unpredictable changes, rebellion, reformation, invention, creation, and futuristic. Freedom and creativity are important to this planet, as well as Northwest. I think this is more of a hidden characteristic about him, but it makes a lot of sense. Although wolves are known to be pack animals, in many modern adaptions they are taken on as loners. Northwest doesn’t and does go with eh flow, but sometimes the flow is very harmful and there has to be rebellion and change. That’s where he comes into play. Forward thinking, and agile.

His eyes glitter like gold a bright blinding light of the sun's true heat that beats down on a day's work, the spirit of determination and the feeling that fuels someone to get up after a long battle or long hard work, he who sits in the deep roots of man (humanity). He has a very lion feel, someone who is deeply proud and brave. A deep lion symbolism can be found with him. He has a more human, animal, and “godly” form. Much like South, the godly form is a form that is very blinding and cannot be seen with the naked eye. He has a sun pendant as seen below. 

Palace,Residence:

Savanna biome, with grasslands biome a bit, tall dry grass, clay huts and houses, sun symbolism, South’s sky palace in the West (makes since if he’s Southeast that the palace would be to the West, since to the East it would be East’s residence). He does have a palace, but it’s really only accessible to him and those he personally invites. So it feels like a very weird cultural blend, like he was worshipped in multiple different cultures. Which makes sense solar deities are highly popular, since the Sun is super important. 

Ruling, Domain:

Southeast rules over wild life, specifically in the Savanna biome. Fire, has deep associations with the suit of wands in tarot, courage, conviction, control, determination, patience, perseverance, decisions, investment, fruition, discovery, enthusiasm, charisms, independence, passion, optimism

Domain: He prefers to keep his personal domain private, only those personally selected can visit and see it. They are then sworn to secrecy and cannot speak about the domain, unless the other people were also selected to visit.

West is gracious and regal but never harsh or untimely. She appreciates decent formality. Her eyes and hair are bejeweled with stars. There is no true “color” to her iris but I’d describe it as a black-ish purple. Her hair is long but is obviously coiled with very defined curls which are very soft. Her skin is highly pigmented to a near jet black and amongst this I can see glimpses of shimmers and glittery constellations on her body. She wears a type of tiara on her head that has 3 small silver star symbols on it. Her body moves likes water, there is no “structure” to her shape; she is extremely flowy.

She feels like a “zing!” when she touches you. Suddenly, I am highly aware of the part of my arm that I requested she touch and I seem to have stronger clairvoyance after the touch. This is just the effects it had on me, of course. What’s interesting is that she is gentle with her words, her movements, everything but the effect it has on me, personally, is still strong and powerful.

West is gender-fluid but seems to lean towards she/they pronouns and to me she presents in a feminine manner. If that is different to you then absolutely embrace it!

The 3 Stars

On her crown/tiara we see two stars on the outside which are similar to Nsoroma (Child of God within Adinkra symbols). This symbol represents the divinity of humans and faith but also represents getting through hardship and still remaining “holy”. Usually referring to having faith for the Supreme Being, The One, The Creator, The Universe (however you choose to label it).

The star in the middle is similar to the Star within Vodou Vévé that represents Ife, also known and documented as the Star of Life (seen with a snake and rod aka the Rod of Asclepius). This symbol is used within medicinal spaces! It, generally speaking, represents healing, rejuvenation, and recuperation.

To West, upon asking what the meaning meant to her, she explains that the stars are her connection to humanity as well as the divine. She elaborates that the stars are to guide herself to others who require assistance and wish to become in tune with their intuition and spiritual-selves. She usually handles very “dark” situations where a flashlight shouldn’t be given, as it is too obvious and may alert the attacker. So, stars are her choice of weapon.

The energy of their Palace is that it's time and galactic based and inspired from, it's elegant and beautiful. Respecting her wishes I will not be detailing visuals, and symbolism. I do ask that if you want to visit, to properly and respectfully reach out, and wait West's response.

Wednesday - The hump day. It’s the middle of the week where we are usually the most exhausted and simply want the week to be over… but it is also the day of Mercury. West can assist practitioners with communication and the idea of letting go / moving on. She is the epitome of Mercury; intellect, travel, networking, perceiving… clairvoyance. She will help you gently confront people and situations that you, perhaps, have been avoiding. The best day to devote to her is Wednesday.

September 13th holds a lot of significance to West. The Tower and The Death card are the best representations of this day. A day for renewal and honesty. Pure honesty. Extreme tragedies, fights, and emotions are celebrated an remembered on this day (a time where communication didn’t go so well). Historically, natural disasters, deaths and chaotic events have happened on this day (wildfires, floods, eathquakes, celebrity deaths, etc). On this day, remember and refresh.
