Black hair appreciation on IWTV
AMC's Interview With The Vampire does such a great job showcasing the beauty and versatility of black hair. These are some a few of my favourite black hair appreciation moments on the show:
Louis' many hairstyles throughout the decades, inspired by the real hairstyles black men wore during those time periods.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonus points for them styling Jacob's real hair instead of using cheap looking wigs like some other tv-shows do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mama Du Lac's fro and Grace's updo at her wedding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Claudia putting a headscarf in her hair before bed. I also love the use of hair – her transitioning from cute plaits to sophisticated updos, to show that she has matured from a little girl into a young woman.

An honourable mention also goes to Lestat playing with Louis' hair during an intimate moment, something that we rarely get to see on screen.

Come in, I have a story to tell...
[EXTRACTION]
Trapped in a submerged house, I have nothing but time to sort through a pile forgotten memories in some part of my mind.
I am awoken by an uncomfortable silence. There are no footsteps trotting about in the halls, no rummaging in the kitchen or the sound of conversing voices throughout the house. There's no microwave buzz, boiling kettle, not even a sitcom jingle or informercials playing on a television. I sit up, then swing my legs to the side of the bed and with a groaning effort ease up to my feet. I stumble around then out the bedroom and into the hall. My heavy head has my body lean as I use the walls of the hall for support. Scanning the rooms I walked by before. One bedroom with a gold striped comforter halts me at its doorway. As I pass through the frame my eyes dart around the room. The stained covers draw my attention, even with the bed made trying to conceal it's traits. Visions from recollection play out one after the other. Here layed a forbidden love, where we rolled around in sinful pleasures. Taking a few bites out of life for fleeting joy, here we disobeyed scriputured law. Ultimately the eleventh hour came upon us and sadly we weren't worth the repentance. Afraid waterfalls would turn to rains of punishment prayers were believed to be our only saviour. I knew we were always doomed! The end of us began when we did. Parked away from the light in the discretion of the night, velvet tightly wrapped my manhood. Harmonious huming made beautiful music in my ears one last time. For that very same fateful night we quit our love. I have since abandoned beliefs -of a religion that was never mine- because it cost me you. I was so sure that I've I've you go. Alas, our sins still stain your covers and my memory.

Kiasi - The Alternate Universe.
Kiasi: Episode 2 (short)
[EXTRACTION]
Crouched over by the door, I brace for impact. The wave crashes against the granite walls and in my bones I feel the surge throughout the house. As the water washes overhead, I rapidly blink my eyes open adjusting my sight after having them so tightly shut. Under the door water creeps in. I cock my head up to see the house is still intact. Standing in the small puddle in the foyer, I lean over peering through the open plan space to the glass doors. Outside is nothing but darkness. Gazing up the stairs, perhaps from higher ground I can better assess this situation. Wasting no time, I take off up the flight striding over steps in my ascent. At one end of the hall a switch click opens circuit to a line of lights that come on one after the other. Following them straight to the master bedroom, I pass by the other rooms without looking inside. The lights in the master come on as soon as I enter, halting me for a second. Rushing to the doors that lead to the terrace, with squinting eyes I try to make out the scene. Upon inspection my sight reveals a terrifying discovery; the entire house is submerged. An acute case of panophobia sets in and many thoughts race around in my head. Fear first occupies my chest then migrates downwards, where a knot draws tight in my stomach. Stepping away my legs give in. Wet prints stain the floor where I've stepped from the puddle pooling under the door. My thoughts coupled with sudden stress trigger a migraine. Betrayed by my brain its like it fires live rounds at the inside of my skull that hurts as I attempt to arrange my thoughts. Still I try to replay all the events of the day as if they were code or signs of some sort. From the serene view on the beach I revered the sun and sky. Lured in by the house I let myself inside, got too comfortable and lost all sense of time. That's when without warning, a wave rolled in. I am struggling to think clearly when emotions take me over and rip tide any decision to do something. Every word recedes from the shores of my lips causing me stutter while gurgle jumbled thoughts. In dire need of a lifeguard, I jump to action attempting to save myself. Then an off the scale sharp pain fires in my head and this time loud voices scream all at once from the inside. I aggressively claw at my head as the pain shoots down my spine. In an agony, I'm wailing at the voices to stop! Surprisingly, amidst this ordeal I fight the urge to stay crumpled on the floor. With much effort and an immense struggle, I muster the strength to be stand rigid in stance. With all this internal chaos, it takes me a moment to fix my focus and dive deep into the intricate parts of my intellect far beyond the primitive reach. Individualizing each voice in the act of separation, one by one I have them disperse in every direction. Pushing every one further away from me until they sound like fading echoes. Easing my concentration, I feel my brain come away from the walls that incase it and the pain subsides. I sense the water level rise overhead and the pressure increasing as the weight of the water bears down on the foundation of the house. Silence fills the spaces and I wonder how I could have known to do that. Stumbling around the master exhausted, I eventually collapse on the king size bed then fix my head's position for better comfort. Before the eyelids close completely, I notice a water stain forming right above the bed. It looks a lot like...

Kiasi - The Alternate Universe.
Kiasi: Episode 1 (section 2)
[EXTRACTION]
After a few moments of utter relaxation, I open my eyes to a dark house. The day had come to an end, the sun had set and it is night out. Quickly, I sit up looking around in panic. I jump up from my nestle of regret thinking how the owners must be on their way home. My first thought is to sneak out through the kitchen, into the foyer and out the front door. Probably not the best idea but I've already made up my mind. So, I grab my coat and start making my way toward the door. But just as I am about to open it, I hear a rumble followed closely by a tremor felt deep in my chest. Looking back across the dark room, I slowly walk to the windows facing the beach but can't see anything outside. I reach for the light switches on the wall, flicking a few until the porch lights come on. In dismay I watched a wave grow and hurdle towards the house. Standing still in fear I wait for my legs to move but after a few seconds go by, nothing. I'm stunned and planted firmly to the floor. As the tremors get louder, finally the delayed flight mode sets in and I'm running back to the foyer. I look back but the big house makes it seem like I'm barely covering any ground. Darting into the foyer I crash into a small welcome table, inadvertently sending a vase with flowers to a shattered end on the floor. Fallen over the toppled table, I hurriedly try to get back to my feet but fail. On the floor, I turn back scurrying to the door with all hope dissipating. Across the foyer and through the window, the wave is closing in. There, in a perfect metaphor (which I will come to realise later) all my doubts, fears, worries, failures and broken/abandoned dreams hit the windows and engulf the house with a quaking force.

Kiasi - The Alternate Universe.
Kiasi: Episode 1 (section 1)
[EXTRACTION]
For a dark and silent moment, my minds whereabouts are unknown. Suddenly, there is a smell of saltiness in the air. Grains of sand fill my shoes and I open my eyes to the sight and sound of rushing water, foaming toward me then gradually retreating. Above the horizon, the sun sets and feels warm on my face.
I've never been to the to the beach. I've heard stories, seen films, admired wallpaper pictures but never actually been to any beach. Yet, somehow this is the place of my great escape. I turn away from the pastel organic canvas to see a stream of spectacular modern beach houses stood at attention. One house however, looks nothing like the others. Crisp lines accentuate godly geometrics, a glass terrace, large tinted windows and deep granite grey shimmering walls. A true design behemoth flaunting its architecture confidently. Mesmerized, it takes me little time to walk up to its wide crystal clear sliding glass door. Instead of knocking, I gently push the door open and walk inside. As if I've done many times before, after placing my coat on a hook I sleekly slide the door shut behind me. The inside of the house is like an interior design magazine spread. Slightly pretentious for my liking but certainly pleasing to the eye. Mahogany floors, complement shades of darker green, gold and yellow furniture against pearl white walls. Everything's intently placed and walking around I feel comfortable moving through this open plan space. I am particularly drawn to the cozy corner section with a cork floor surrounded by small shelves filled with books and complete with a cushioned windowsill bench. The view out the window is of the beach and above is a windowed ceiling portion streaming in sunlight. The industrial style kitchen flows in with the dinning area. Accepting a warm invitation, I make my way to the lounge and sit down on the sofa -merely interested in it's seemingly supreme level of comfort. It's nice but feels startlingly familiar. Laying down, I look up at the high ceiling. With the sound of water washing up on the shore, a calm feeling sweeps over my body and I close my eyes to enjoy that complete surrender to luxury.

Kiasi - The Alternate Universe.
Kiasi: Quantum jumping.
[EXTRACTION]
I'm going on a little trip. To reach the designated destination it's imperative I am in the right frame of mind. I don't think I have ever done this the wrong way and I am certainly not saying there is a right way. However, sharp and accurate concentration is key. After a deep breath, closing my eyes and clearing my mind, I let free every emotion, every memory, who I was, who I am and who I want to be. Unshackle inhibitions and pull away from everything that I think I know and some of what I've been taught. Forgetting about tracing the outlines, those borders are enclosures. In fact loose the lines all together! Letting liberated colours flow out and into one another, lucid and hypnotic, vibrant and alluring. This is when the psyche begins to accelerate in hyper speed. Intractable, weightless, suspended. Now envisioning myself elsewhere, in a world/reality entirely new. Where life as I know it has been rearranged, this is where I like to think of myself as the cobbler. Changing the perspective by repairing worn out soles that have followed, lead and hiked one particular path. To then step into bespoke shoes ready for a their journey. Once in the new fitted, laced pair I feel a switch in my brain. Floating above the dream realm like a kite loose from a child's grasp, I move toward the marvelous Kiasi. Drifting further and further away from the known reality, my skin tingles as I pass through the smoky border.

Kiasi - The Alternate Universe.
Kiasi: Introduction
[EXTRACTION]
What is an ideal environment for liberating the mind? I know some days alone with your thoughts can be daunting and that question is a result of a young man who spends too much alone. For me, it is a space where free thinking forms wild thoughts that will give me a temporary escape from reality.
Years ago, I started constructing something I did not quite understand. As I grew older and became more in tune with this known reality, I dismissed anything one would consider "imaginary". But what was once another adolescent experience is today the alternate universe existing as Kiasi. A Swahili word meaning 'amount' or 'quantum'. Where our primary reality referred to as Vide e'Centro-Vita, is a portal streaming light out from this dimension. Encapsulating it is the 600-cell dream realm called, Hexa'revarum. Its transparency allows the bright starlike centre to light up Kiasi. Circling Vide'C'Vita & Hexa'revarum is a green, red and purple gas border. I think of it like a boundary for the unimaginable worlds beyond it. Because over the border but not too far from the edge is the matriarch, Mahali-Amani. A world that birthed the alternate universe. In the earlier stages of it's build, some years ago, I coded many alternate realities into this one world. The overloaded system failed of course and the world literally blew up. A younger me could not understand what caused the devastating happening that left parts of me scattered in the vast abyss of my cortex. Then a little over a decade later I figured it out and decided to return to Kiasi. Only to find a self-evolved universe! During the dreaded year of isolation, my hopes were to find solace where I would retreat to rebuild the main world and its reality. I thought to take some elements of dreams from Hexa'reverum which would inspire new ideas impossible to recreate in my primary reality. But after that first jump I realised it was already a finished world. Also, the revived mother-world brought other smaller worlds to life! I am unsure as to how many there are but I want to explore each of their realities.
There's one more world, it looms on the outskirts of the universe. Multiple dark grey cyclones viscously swarm the atmosphere giving it a murky marble appearance. It is a frightening I call Maru; a Sesotho word for clouds. Where this giant came from, I don't know. All the offspring that grow as parts of me and the mother-world -while they vary in size- they are miniature compared to Maru. So how did this world come to be?

Dear Flower,
Teach me to grow like you. Teach me to be bold and blossom in my own beauty. Teach me how to get attention (recognition) without demanding it. You do all this all so effortlessly, without a single word.
Teach me.
