Dreamful Memories
A story in which childhood friends find out they are soulmates.
Soulmates are two individuals who are predestined to spend the rest of their lives together. At least that is what we are taught as we grow closer to the age of sixteen. It was greatly stressed that both individuals have to be sixteen in order for the ‘dreamful memories’ to start. Two days ago I turned the lucky sixteen. Unfortunately, my predestined person has not.  Therefore, I am left with the built up anticipation that has been distilled in my mind since the age of ten.
“Happy birthday Kacchan!” Midoriya Izuku’s voice excitedly bounced off the classroom’s walls.
Bakugo grumbled his appreciation leaving Midoriya smiling brightly. It’s not everyday that the hot tempered blonde shows any form of gratitude. Growing up with him, Midoriya and I quickly caught onto this character trait. So it was only natural that the interaction between the two left a smile of my own plastered on my face.
“How’s it feel to finally be sixteen Kats?” I cooed in his ear.
“Not any different.” He spat back.
Chuckling, I sat back in my chair satisfied with his answer and reaction. The hairs on the back of his neck had stood up and the tips of his ears flushed bright red. Unlike Midoriya, I never let my admiration for Bakugo and his quirk render me standing my ground against the blonde. Over time my admiration turned into something more. I don’t recall when or how but soon after the realization every wish upon a star was dedicated to him.
“What if Bakugo is Y/N’s soulmate!?” Mina exclaimed as if she had read my thoughts.
“That’d be so awesome! Childhood friends turned soulmates!” Denki chimed in.
Before Bakugo or myself could respond, Mr. Aizawa entered the classroom. The start bell chimed soon after. Instead of focusing on the review for our upcoming exams my attention was used on calming the rapid pounding in my chest. The previous comments circled my mind and made it difficult to calm my heart.
“One could only wish.” I mumbled with small hopes that my words were heard.
~Time Skip~
She wore a sweet knee length dress. One that was made in her favorite color. Her hair was loose from its normal pulled back style. She was sitting in her usual place in the park. Under the tallest cherry blossom tree. My feelings for her only grew stronger day by day. But I couldn’t tell her that. We have three more years until we both turn sixteen. Which means we find out who our predestined life partner is.
“Stop standing over there like a creep and come join me.”
Without any hesitation I strided over and sat next to her. The book in her hands being one of her favorites. Her delicate hands traced under the words she read. Once she was done with the page she placed her marker and closed the book.
“Something’s wrong. What is it?”
“I dislike how well you can read me.”
She giggled softly. Her laugh is a sound I can listen to on repeat. The way her eyes squint when she’s really happy.
“Will you be my soulmate?” I blurted
The light in her eyes shined brighter. The pounding in my chest quickened in pace and the temperature of my face rose. That was such a stupid thing to ask.
“You know it doesn’t work that way. No matter how much either of us would like for that to be the case.”
She’s right. No matter how much either of us want to be each other's soulmates it can’t happen. Our soulmates are predestined way before we’re even born. Only the deities in charge are responsible.
“One could only wish though, right?”
She pushed herself up from the ground and dusted her dress off. She looked back down towards me and extended her hand. I hesitated before taking her hand and using her help to pull from the ground. Her hand was soft. They always were.
“One could only wish.” I repeated softly.
Nearly falling from my bed I jumped out very clumsily once waking up. The dream. The memory. It was one that I led Bakugo to believe I had forgotten about. So many different emotions flowed throughout my entire body. To say I was happy was an understatement. Bakugo Katsuki is my soulmate. I swung my door open to leave only to find myself tumbling backwards. I looked to see who it was I had run into. Staring back at me were the all too familiar crimson eyes I grew up staring at.
“K-Kats, what’re you doing here?”
“Probably for the same reason that you’re rushing out.”
The Dreamful Memories. He turned sixteen yesterday which meant that both of us saw a memory in our sleep. I wonder what memory played for him. I don’t have too many intriguing ones.
“It was the day you got your quirk.”
He looked away shyly. I remember the day very vividly. It just so happened to be the day that the two of us met. I took notice of his pajamas and disheveled hair. He rushed across the dorm the moment he woke up.
“For me it was our conversation under the cherry blossom tree.”
His attention shot back towards me quickly. The surprise was well written across his face. Relief washes over me once my mentality grasped the fact that he was not upset.
“You remember?”
“Mhm. It’s a conversation that’s filled me with so much hope and sorrow at the same time. I realized my feelings for you that day and began to wish on every star that night. Every wish I made was in hopes of having you as my soulmate.”
“What now? Now that we know? What happens next?”
The smile across my face only grew in size. I’m unsure what it is that soulmates are supposed to do after their discoveries. But I do know what I want to do at this moment.
“This.”
Without a second thought I grabbed ahold of his shirt collar and pulled him closer. I then pressed my lips against his gently. His lips were soft and tasted of spice. Pulling out of his daze, Bakugo started to kiss me back. I couldn’t help but smile into the kiss.
“I wouldn’t want to be anyone else’s soulmate.” We both mumbled.

The Letter
Dear Levi,
If you’re reading this, that means my time finally arrived. I want to start off by saying thank you. Thank you for allowing me to talk your head off. You were a very genuine friend. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to have you a part of my life. Even though our friendship was short-lived. I cherished every moment. Can I tell you something? This has got to be the thing I regret the most. Keeping my family in the dark of my diagnosis was the hardest decision in this whole ‘sick’ journey; Your company made it not so lonely. Speaking of family; y/n. Remember them? My sibling? I know, since my passing, you have been watching over them. Without my asking, too. Thank you. The only way I know this is because you’re reading this letter right now. I told y/n to give it to you when your paths crossed. I just hope it wasn’t too long after my departure that it happened. Anyway, can I ask you a favor? Please keep watching over them? They may look completely put together now, but I know they’re suffering inside. Y/n has always been the silent sufferer type. Just one thing the two of you have in common. Hint. Hint. You’re the only one that I can really trust to look over them. Now on a different note. You weren’t much of a talker when it came to your personal life, so I did some digging. Please don’t be mad. I’ve one other thing to ask of you, and that is to live your life without holding onto all the pain you’re hiding. What you have had to endure was something that no individual should have to go through. Open that tea shop you’re always fantasizing about. That is, if you haven’t already. You deserve to be happy, Levi. I’m watching you from up here. You best believe that every rainstorm that comes around will be my doing. Until next time, Levi.
                                                                                              ~Signed Erwin.

Lavender Tea Storms
I rushed into the nearest, open, door as the rain started coming down quicker.
“Sorry but we’re closed.”
A monotone voice rang through my ears. I looked around the place, which I took notice of being a tea cafe, and found the owner of the voice. It was a short statured man, whose back was turned to me, and he looked to be cleaning. I noticed that there were not any other people inside the place aside from him and I.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t realize. I’m only trying to find some shelter until the rain dies down and you happen to be the nearest, unlocked door.”
The man turned towards me after my reply and I was able to recognize him immediately. He has been a regular at my book shop for awhile now. I think, to be exact, a year now. He showed up one day and has been coming every weekend. He would come in pick a book and leave once he finished reading it. I was always curious about him; Just never brought myself to introduce myself to him. I found joy out of just admiring him from afar. From the look in his eyes I could tell that he recognizes who I am.
“Well in that case, is there anything I can make for you? On the house.”
“Oh no I’m okay. I’d hate to make you dirty up what you just cleaned.”
“I insist.”
His stare was almost too intimidating. Taking a short breath I gave into his persistence and spoke.
“Early Grey with lavender please.”
His cold stare lightened up and a soft smile, almost missable, was placed on his face.
“You’ve good taste.”
“It has been my favorite for as long as I can remember. It’s such a relaxing brew. Can never go wrong with it I say.”
I moved from in front of the door, over to a table closer to the counter. The cafe fell silent after my statement. I pulled my, nearly, soaked jacket off and carefully placed it over the back of the chair next to me. Hopefully it can dry some before I have to leave.
“Do you own or just work at the book shop?”
“I own it.”
“For how long?”
“Since the previous owner died. It was actually given to me by him.”
“So you knew him?”
“He was my brother. Did you?”
Silence. I watched as his body tensed and untensed as if he was having a mental battle. He knew Erwin and by the looks of it they were close. Then it hit me.
“You’re Levi aren’t you?”
He continued to stay silent.
“You don’t have to reply.”
I reached inside my bag for the letter Erwin left for Levi. It was stated in his final will for, strictly, me to give it to him. As I was about to push myself from my chair a nice steaming cup of tea was placed in front of me. It smells absolutely beautiful. Before he walked away I held the letter out to him.
“Erwin left this for you. He stressed it in his will that I was to give this to you the moment our paths crossed on their own.”
He stared at the envelope for a moment before taking it and retreating back behind the counter. I watched as he turned his back from me. An action I recognized quickly. He wanted to hide his emotions. As he read the letter I turned my focus back on the tea. While we were talking I noticed how delicately he prepared the cup of tea. I could see how passionate he was about making tea. I picked the small cup up and gently blew on the hot beverage before taking a sip.
“I don’t think I've ever made this same tea this good.”
I glanced over towards the silent male. His breathing was slightly labored. He was either holding back his tears or silently crying hoping I wouldn’t hear. I turned to the window and noticed that the rain cleared up. Using that as an excuse I rose from my seat and gathered my things. I walked over and placed the now empty tea cup and saucer on the counter behind Levi.
“The rain has cleared. I appreciate your great hospitality. It was a pleasure to meet you Levi. I heard nothing but great things about you from my brother. I hope to continue seeing you at the shop. You’ll be seeing me here more often; You make the perfect lavender earl grey tea I’ve ever had.”
With that said I made my exit and started my walk home. ‘Oh you knew what you were doing the moment you started telling me about Levi didn’t you Erwin?’

Unexpected Return pt. 2
I gazed up at the ceiling above me as I replayed the events from last week through my mind. A soft knock on my door pulled me from my thoughts. I turned to the now opened door to see Steve standing in the doorframe.
“How are you feeling?”
“Mentally or Physically?”
“Both?”
“I’ll start with physically. The amount of pain I am in is indescribable. It feels like I’m continuously being stabbed again.”
“And mentally?”
I turned my gaze back to the ceiling with a sigh. Mentally, I was a mess. A broken mess.
“Mentally… I’m not okay. I keep replaying what happened last week. It’s a broken record in my mind. Losing him destroyed me and now? I’ve no idea what to do. They’ve brainwashed him, Steve.
“I know, but we cannot give up on finding him.”
“How do you suppose we do that? Stark has practically forbidden any of us from searching him out!”
“Tony has his reasons. All we need to do is trust his process. Besides, you’re in no condition to be out and about anyways.”
“Not even for some coffee and fresh air?”
“Now that’s over exaggerating. Get dressed and meet me out front.”
Before I could say anything else, he was gone. I wasn’t intending to go now. Seems like I’ve no choice now.
~Time Skip~
The cafe that Steve brought me to was nice. The atmosphere was exactly what I needed at the moment. However, there was this unsettling feeling sitting in the pit of my chest. Something wasn’t right.
“Something doesn’t feel right, Steve.”
“I sense it too.”
With his response, I activated my power and did a quick mental sweep of the area. I let out a gasp upon my results.
“Steve. It’s not safe here.”
“What did you find out?”
“I think it’s Bucky. I’m not entirely too sure, but it’s the same mindset from last week’s fight.”
“And you’re positive?”
“I can’t say for sure. There’s something off about it. It’s not entirely the same mindset.”
“Almost like something, or rather someone, altered it?”
“Do you think?”
“Your powers are very strong.”
The idea of my powers actually affecting Bucky caused my heart to race. Using my power again, I locked onto the targeted mind. Maybe I can get him to communicate with me.
‘James? Is this you?’
No response. Just silence.
‘Who are you and how do you know my name?’
Yes! A response. It’s him. With my heart racing I looked around in an attempt to physically locate him.
‘You’re not going to find me. Now answer my question. Who. Are. You?’
‘y/n l/n.’
‘Impossible. She died a long time ago.’
So that’s the story they told him. How am I going to explain to him why I am still alive?
‘Sorry to break the news to you, but whoever told you that story lied. I am y/n l/n and I am very much alive.’
His aura changed. The emotion he was feeling was the same glimpse I got from him last week before passing out. He was more than confused.
‘Your mindset is right though. I shouldn’t be alive. I should’ve died of old age and natural causes just a few years back. Unfortunately, the cards were not on my side for the life that I wanted. I was abducted by hydra, who used me for their experimental gains. They altered my DNA causing my, from what I’ve assumed, eternal life. The powers I have come from them. I suffered years of torture before being deemed an unfit, or in other terms failed trail. Fortunately enough, my life was spare and I was dumped in the middle of no where.’
‘How do you expect me to believe that?’
‘Fair enough. Okay then. Explain to me how you’re still alive.’
Nothing but silence. I attempted to search for him again. This time I was able to spot him.
‘You want to know the only difference between the two of us? You had the luxury of having your mind wiped of all of our memories. Myself. Well I had to suffer a hundred years without you. I remember everything about you almost as if I met you yesterday.’
I watched his movements as he looked up. Steel eyes meeting my e/c ones.
‘I’d give anything to have you by my side again.’
‘We could never go back to the way we were.’
‘No we can’t. But that’s why the future is called the future. I’ll give you the time to ponder. But it won’t be long before Tony Stark and law enforcement finds you.’
‘And when they do? What happens then?’
‘Well lets hope they all bring the right mindset to the battlefield. Because one thing that never changed about me. Is how much I’m willing to sacrifice for you.’
‘Why though?’
‘Because I fell in love with a man named Bucky Barnes. And I never stopped loving him.’

Unexpected Return pt. 1
~Flashback~
1937. The year that had everyone lined up outside of every bookstore possible. All for the one book that caused a craze before its release; The Hobbit. I, however, found myself pushing through the mass of people. Amongst the unpleasurable crowd, I managed to push my way into a clearing. As did another person, a very attractive one at that. I smiled before speaking out to him.
"You would think that Howard Stark was in town with all this ruckus."
The male let out a soft chuckle before responding.
"You are right about that one."
"I'm y/n by the way."
I stuck my hand out for him to shake. He smiled and grabbed my hand. He didn't shake it; Instead, he turned my palm down and kissed the skin above my knuckles. His action caused my cheeks to heat up.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, y/n. I'm James, though you can call me Bucky."
"The pleasure's all mine, Bucky."
I smiled up at him and gazed into his steel-blue eyes.
~End Flashback~
Years later, I find my gaze locked on those familiar blue eyes. Except this time it wasn't much of a pleasant meeting. I had no time to react to his attack before I felt a pain shoot through my abdomen.
"Y/N!"
Steve's voice yelled out as I fell to the ground. I looked back up at the male in front of me. His hand held high above him as he grasped his blade. Before he could bring his arm down, I grabbed his ankle and, with the strength I had left, used my powers to pull a memory from his brainwashed mind.
~Memory~
"I still can't believe you joined without consulting with me first."
I faked a pout as I stood in front of the tracks, with Bucky by my side. I had my arms crossed over my chest as I looked over at him.
"All that I am doing is for you."
He grabbed my arms and pulled me closer to him.
"How is joining the Army for me? To me, it seems like you want to get away from me."
"That's where you're wrong. You deserve to live in a safe and better world than the one we have now. I'd like to have the satisfaction that I helped give you that world."
"Ugh. There you go, melting my heart again."
I grabbed his cheeks and pulled him closer to me. I pressed my forehead against his and gave a small smile.
"Just don't die on me, Barnes."
"How can I when I haven't even married you yet?"
"That requires you to ask for my hand."
"Well..."
My eyes widened as he stepped back and knelt down on his knee. I watched as he pulled a velvet box from his coat pocket.
"I'm no good with words, but I want you to know that you are all I think about; Day and night. I want to spend all my days with you. So will you y/f/n y/l/n marry me?"
"Of course I will!"
With my answer, I fell into his arms as happy tears rolled down my cheeks.
~End Memory~
I let out a cough, as I had no more strength. The taste of iron filled my mouth as the crimson colored liquid fell from my mouth. I gazed up at the male, still hovering over me. The blade was no longer in his hand; Instead, it lay on the ground next to me. A fleeting look of panic crossed his gaze before he turned and ran away from the scene.
"y/n!"
Steve and the others were now surrounding me. All I could do was watch the receding figure disappear.
"B-buck-ky."
I spit out before everything around me turned black.
