Happy Black History Month!

This Black History Month I'd like to celebrate the genre that makes us jump at every unknown noise, brings us nightmares, and has us up late turning the page in anticipation of what will happen next - Black Thriller & Horror! There has been a lovely uptick in the publishing of Black Thrillers and Horror in the past few years where Black protagonists are solving complex mysteries, fighting against all forms of supernatural beings, and sometimes a combination of both. I've had so much fun reading all of these novels and am greatly looking forward to what 2024 has to bring.

When creating a list of Black Thriller/Horror writers I must begin with the queen, Tiffany D. Jackson. Her first book "Monday's Not Coming" was a perfectly written thriller with a plot twist that hit with a gut punch that I'm still recovering from. Since then she's been on a streak with hit after hit after hit. Her latest, The Weight of Blood, is a book you cannot miss.

When Springville residents—at least the ones still alive—are questioned about what happened on prom night, they all have the same explanation … Maddy did it. An outcast at her small-town Georgia high school, Madison Washington has always been a teasing target for bullies. And she's dealt with it because she has more pressing problems to manage. Until the morning a surprise rainstorm reveals her most closely kept Maddy is biracial. She has been passing for white her entire life at the behest of her fanatical white father, Thomas Washington. 2023 also gave us two amazing debut thrillers and I, for one, cannot wait to see what these two authors cook up next.

Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington

I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me by Jamison Shea

And to round out this list, we also gotta point out the fellas who are also killing it with the Thriller/Horror genre.

Promise Boys by Nick Brooks

The Getaway by Lamar Giles

The Forest Demands Its Due by Kosoko Jackson

Arghhhhhhhhh!!!!! 🥺🥺🥺 I'm goona miss the bayview murder club / the bayview crew. I'm completely and totally smitten by Karen m mcnamus's bayview world. And I loved how in every book the members kept increasing and they all become kind of a found family.

Myyyy Goddddd 😮😮 In One of Us Is Back : the secrets, the plot twists and the tension, the juicy characters made my jaw drop.

Romance subplot was magical ✨😇

I am head over heels for every character present in this books - Nate and Bronwyn are ENDGAME, they are infinite. Addy is the bravest. Kris and Copper have my heart. Maeave is so damn intelligent and along with Luis, they are so cute. Phoebe and Knox were totes adorable and deserve everything. Supporting characters - phenomenal.

I enjoyed reading Jake and Simon's chapters. And how everything came back to them in the end.

The endinggggggg Ugh so beautifully written and so well deserved.🫶🏻🫶🏻

My thoughts on

The Midnight Club (2022)

I just finished watching The Midnight Club last night and couldn't help feel how it was like a beautiful work of art left unfinished. When I started the show, I was really impressed by the way the foundation was laid but several things were left unexplained but we'll get there later.

First off, let's talk about the true essence of the show; the stories. While I absolutely loved the way the characters expressed their unconscious/concious desires through the stories knowing that they wouldn't come true, that the future they paint will continue to remain trapped behind words, I couldn't help but feel that we could've been introduced to this world in a better way.

By the time we learn about Natsuki's story regarding the Japanese myth, it's already progressed into a "frenzy of jump scares" which completely ruined the atmosphere for me and I found myself wanting it to be over as soon as possible.

The next thing I wish to address is Ilonka's character. She is a complex teen who is unable to accept the terminal nature of her life and that she cannot be saved. Initially, I liked her drive to survive but as the episodes carry on, we see her completely lose herself in the desperate attempt to grasp what's left of her life. Her character itself had multiple flaws which were further enhanced by the fact that so many things about her were left unexplained.

Why was Ilonka having visions?

Was it because of her medication? Maybe. But it could also, be due to her being most open to the spiritual aspect of the place. She openly sought to achieve wellness through the nature and was engrossed by the past which might've manifested in the form of visions. Maybe her sharing these thoughts with Kevin was the reason for his own visions.

Another aspect of the show I really wanted to see were the stories coming together in the end (as we had in the haunting series) but was really underwhelmed. There were too many plot holes which raised a lot of questions.

Who is Dr. Georgina Stanton?

In the final episode, her ties to the Paragon are hinted at. I personally found myself drawing ties between her and Regina Ballard (Aceso). Regina, upon performing the ritual had lost her hair which kinda made me think if Stanton had also tried to do the same for her son (resulting in the loss of her hair, being the only survivor).

Who are the old ghosts?

This really got me scratching my head finding answers. Maybe they're yet again manifestations of the negative emotions arising in the kids but I'm not sure. Also, how is Kevin connected to the old woman and why does Ilonka keep seeing her where Kevin is?

All these are left unanswered which really irks the viewers to know more.

(I have not read the books and all my interpretations are solely based on the show)

The story of Marty’s generation of technologists— and mine, the one that came afterward — is that we overestimated the liberatory power of technology and ignored its risks.

This is a profoundly ahistorical view: no one writes (or reads) cyberpunk because they think it’s all gonna be fine. And no one founds — or works for — an organization like the Electronic Frontier Foundation because they’re confident that technology can only be used for good.

A better way to talk about that era is to contrast Marty and Marcus. Both still hold out hope for better technology, and both are committed to making it happen, but Marcus is still new to the fight, full of energy, unscarred by bruising defeats in the long fight for human liberation.

Marty, by contrast, is 40 years into the struggle, and he’s watched tech devolve into “five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of text from the other four.”

Marcus is fighting to keep what he has; Marty is fighting to get back what he lost.
