MUCC - Ryuusei 2006
First off, on a personal note: This poll makes me so proud. MUCC was one of my favourite bands and seeing so many new listeners enjoy one of my favourite songs makes me so happy I could cry. :') This is exactly what the "yes, heard before"/"yes, first time" options are for, for me. 💖
MUCC is a Japanese visual kei rock band, formed in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1997. "Ryuusei" is also featured on the album Best of Mucc, a compilation album released in 2007 which contains 16 tracks compiling the "best" songs of the band, and was released simultaneously with the Worst of Mucc compilation album. "Ryuusei" has not been used in anime as most of the rebloggers have been talking about, however MUCC have let other songs be used for that.
"Ryuusei" recieved a total of 69,9% yes votes which is quite funny considering the band is also known as 69 due to the Japanese words for 6 and 9 matching the pronunciation of their name. 😂😂😂

What fans say:
Rise of the Guardians:
It's a fun story with good writing and really interesting characters.
I was drawn in by the white haired anime boy when the trailers first dropped, I was further drawn in by the fact that he was also dead (Hurt/comfort angst potential is HOUGH) But also the visuals are absolutely gorgeous and I fell in love with the story of hope and faith and of wanting to be seen. It's such a wholesome movie and I've watched it repeatedly when it came out in theatres. Did I also mention the SOUNDTRACK?! ACK-! I love it!!!
I was here when this film was HUGE on Tumblr and I get so much nostalgia over it, sure, it was a little cringe*, but I had fun and that's what matters <3
The Emperor's New Groove:
Funny, memorable, guy turns into a llama.
This bad boy can fit so many memes! A great movie. Really good story about empathy. Fantastic villain. Fun family dynamics. The main character is FLAMBOYANT. Kronk is in this. I don't know what else you could possibly want. Oh yes, 2D animation my beloved.
The movie has a pretty silly concept but still contains plenty of heart and themes of cooperation and friendship. Plus all of the characters are iconic. They tend to be just a little bit horrible but still loveable (or at least extremely entertaining to watch).
I have loved this movie for 20 years; like 10 years ago I managed to convert my mom and now it’s our Thanksgiving movie. Infinitely quotable. The fact that Patrick Warburton is genuinely so tone-deaf that Kronk’s humming of the Mission: Impossible theme is UNRECOGNIZABLE.
Has the best character development of all time and also a himbo who likes to cook and Eartha Kitt!! my brother and i would always watch this movie on road trips it’s iconic and the best scene is definitely when Kuzco wakes up as a llama in the countryside and both he and Pacha freak the hell out and Kuzco goes “LLAMA FAAAAAACE” it is HILARIOUS amazing movie fr
It’s so well done! The voice acting is great, the whole movie is campy and fun, and it’s a movie about learning to care about other people.
*Mod note: we embrace the cringe in this house.

i imagine quite a few followers of mine, over the last few days, have been looking at my blog and wondering to themselves, 'what is milgram, and why won't she shut up about it?'
well, lads, this post is for you.
Tumblr media
WHAT IS MILGRAM, AND WHY I WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT IT: a masterpost
milgram is a bit difficult to explain. here's the short version: imagine the popular reality show 'survivor', only instead of real people, it's anime characters. instead of a desert island, it's a magical jail that makes you sing. and instead of an assortment of swimsuit-clad hotties, it's ten highly unstable individuals who have all been, to some degree, involved in a murder. does that clear things up? no?
well, here’s the long version:
a teenager called es wakes up in an eerie, mystical prison, in a guard's uniform, with no memory of who they are or why they're here. the helpful mascot character, a talking rabbit named jackalope, explains that this prison is called milgram, and es is its sole guard and jury. the prison contains ten prisoners, all of whom had committed some sort of murder, although the prison's definition of 'murder' can be a bit loose. none of the prisoners are quite sure how they got there, either, but it's clearly detached from the outside world, and they have no means of contacting anyone from home.
es' job is fairly straightforward. they have to get to know each prisoner, and then decide whether to 'forgive' or 'condemn' them. (this is often translated as voting 'innocent' or 'guilty', but rest assured, everyone is actually guilty. the question is not whether they've committed the murder -- it's whether they're considered justified in doing so.) there will be three trials: for each one, each prisoner will offer their testimony, and receive their verdict. their future in the prison will be affected accordingly.
the prison has a nifty schtick: the prisoners don't testify, exactly. instead, they're connected to a special machine that takes their innermost thoughts, feelings, and memories... and turns them into absolute bangers, paired with epic anime music videos. yes. their fate is decided based on the music video produced by their brain. what happens to those forgiven, and those condemned? well... that will be revealed in time.
that's that for the in-universe setup. in reality, milgram is an interactive multimedia franchise that delivers its story primarily through a series of youtube music videos. the songs are composed by renowned vocaloid producer deco-27 and the videos produced by otoiro. if you're into vocaloid at all, that's probably all you need to know it looks and sounds awesome. (if you're not: i'm telling you that right now.) each character's video has a distinct visual and musical style tailored to their personality, which makes for a very unique and diverse experience. and seriously, all those songs slap.
but the key gimmick is this: es is you. after each character's music video is released, a poll goes up where the viewers can vote to decide whether to forgive or condemn. the majority vote is then canonized, and future story developments will be affected by it.
milgram also explicitly urges you not to vote based strictly on morality. you can vote for whatever reason you'd like. maybe you just find this character cool, and want them to have a good time. maybe they annoy you, so you want them to suffer. maybe you just think this particular verdict would make for some really neat story developments! there's no right or wrong, which makes for some really fun and varied fandom discussions.
another aspect that makes it really engaging to me, is that the music videos -- meant to be the fruit of each character's subconscious -- are rarely straightforward. most of them require some degree of analysis on the viewers' end, and there's no concrete canon explanation provided for most of them. this creates really rich and interesting community discussion! nothing like watching a video for the first time, having no idea what to make of it, and scrolling down to read some passionate fan's frame-by-frame, 5000 word breakdown. it's awesome!
with ten prisoners (plus es, who is not nearly as much of a blank slate as the story would initially have you believe), every fan is guaranteed to find their own little blorbo. each character is incredibly fucked up in their own special way! they're all professionally voice acted and, in addition to their songs, have accompanying voice dramas where you can get to know more about them.
with the first two trials (=seasons) out of three complete, now’s a good time as any to jump in!
OKAY, SO HOW DO I GET INTO THIS THING?
first, a warning: in case that wasn't clear from all the murder, this is not a feel-good series. your favorite blorbo will inevitably turn out to be a horrible person who does horrible things, and will have horrible things happen to them. the videos include, in addition to the obvious violence and murder, themes of abusive relationships, bullying, suicide ideation and child abuse. and that's just off the top of my head.

T1 MUSIC VIDEOS:  you can find every video from the first trial, in order, HERE.

Why I Love The Voices
I decided that regardless of the poll results, this is something I will be posting.
If it results in a yes, this will serve as an explanation for my weird fixation and why I will continue to post about them for the way I see them.
If it results in a no, this will be my last post about them, and will explain and apologise for my obsession.
Flash back to sometime in 2023, my boyfriend messaged me on Discord and invited me to watch him play a demo of a horror-romance visual novel.
I watched it and saw him pick his decisions, and instantly fell in love with the game.
I looked at the other paths we didn't get online and I decided I had to at least see the full version when it came out.
I even had a waifu picked out (it was, and still is, The Adversary).
Now at the time, I wasn't too focused on the Voices. I liked Contrarian and thought Stubborn was based, but I didn't really dwell on them too much. I was more focused on the different versions of the Princess.
Later that year, the full game came out and me and my boyfriend were hype. We got into a Discord call, and he streamed the game. I was fascinated by all the routes we went through. All the Princesses, all the Voices, and all the moments with the Shifting Mound.
At that point, I was starting to see the appeal of the Voices and even yelled in excitement when Contrarian showed up in The Fury, like "Hey! It's our old friend!" I found myself seeing their points of view more than most people would have their first time playing.
My boyfriend played, and I watched intensely like it was a movie at the cinema. I hadn't figured out what made the Voices so appealing to me yet, until we got to the ending. Literally, the moment the Voice of the Hero showed up, I finally understood.
Him, and the other Voices, felt like a connection deeper than the romance we had with the Princess. They felt like family to me. And that's why I love them.
I looked up the other routes online and eventually bought the game for myself so I could explore it. It's one of the few games I've managed to 100% complete. I started posting about it on Tumblr and now my blog is filled with nothing but my brainrot.
Why, though? That's... complicated. During November of 2023, I had gotten a different game I was hyped for all year, but because the controls focused on moving your body, and I was out of shape, I could only do a little bit of it the day I got it, and then I got sick and couldn't play it for a while.
And then things got really ugly for me.
My Internet had decided to fizzle out to the point that it was cutting out by the minute and when it did decide to connect in a semi-stable way, it was so bad I could only watch videos at a maximum of 480p. Yes, that bad.
Not to mention I was suffering from stress coming from my real life family, preparations for Christmas and money troubles.
I needed something to cling to. Anything to cling to. And as if I could hear them in my own head, the Voices were there when I needed them.
That's when I started posting about them. I was just getting my thoughts out there, and before you knew it, I had become a regular poster in this wonderfully weird community. And it was so much nicer than other communities I'd been part of.
Thinking about them and sharing my thought about them helped me get through a hard time, and if you've seen my posts, you know just how hard this time has been for me even recently.
I hope you can forgive me for being so selfish. Regardless of the poll results, I will still continue to love the Voices.
Thank you for reading.

And Now It's Time for Silly Songs with Larry: the part where Larry comes out and Sings a Silly Song.
That's right, the VeggieTales Villain Song Showdown is in it's final days, and that means it's time for the Very Veggie Silly Song Showdown!
Tumblr media
Playlist is Here. First Round of Polls (barring any major hang-ups) should go up on Sunday.
Match-up list and more details on how the bracket was formed under the cut.
Now, a couple of things: This is every song from a VeggieTales episode that fills the spot traditionally held by Silly Songs with Larry (so yes we do have Love Songs with Mr. Lunt, Obscure Broadway Showtunes, etc.) plus a few that even if they aren't in that specific spot, they're a non-traditional episode equivalent (feature film credits songs, song-compilation-episode premiered songs, and Lost Puppies because it just feels like a silly song).
This number of songs (and the number there would be if I did JUST the official ones) is... not traditional tournament compatible. So, to try to make this as fair as possible, I had to get creative.
First, and the easiest to see on the visual bracket, Semifinals will be Top 3 of the Left and Top 3 of the Right (as opposed to Top 2).
Second, there are 3 Round 1 "Themed" Match-ups. These do get to skip a round, which I'm not a fan of because I feel like it gives them a free pass; however, these also have 3 songs in each, which means to move on it has to beat 2 other songs as opposed to 1, and in my mind that makes it harder, so I'm thinking maybe hopefully it evens out? (If you don't like it... it's VeggieTales Silly Songs, don't take it so seriously).
These themed match-ups also serve as a way to compare similar songs. We've got the three Boyz in the Sink songs (Bellybutton, Mess Down in Egypt, and Bubble Rap), the three Christmas songs (Oh Santa, 8 Polish Foods of Christmas, and Wrapped Myself Up for Christmas), and three Pirates Who Don't Do Anything but-not-their-original-theme-song Songs (Do the Moo Shoo, Credits Song, and Rock Monster).
So that's how I tried to work with there being a non-easily-bracketable number of songs. And as far as how the match-ups were distributed: it looks random, but it's not? It was a lot so I don't want to try to describe it in too much detail, but it is based on grouping them in chronological order, pitting the groups against each other and putting them on opposite sides and in different branches of the bracket. Basically, trying to delay any potential rematches of the ten in the Ultimate Silly Song Countdown until as late in the tournament as possible.
Anyway, now for the actual Match-ups:
Left Side:
A.1: "The Water Buffalo Song" vs "Monkey"
A.2: "Lost Puppies" vs "Astonishing Wigs"
A.3: "Dance of the Cucumber" vs "Sneeze if you Need To"
A.4: "SUV Song" vs "Best Friends Forever"
B.1: "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" vs "Donuts for Benny"
B.2: "The Blues with Larry" vs "Happy Tooth Day"
B.3: "Yodeling Veterinarian of the Alps" vs "Where Have All the Staplers Gone?"
B.4: "My Baby Elf" vs "The Perfect Puppy"
C.1: "Endangered Love" vs "The Hopperena"
C.2: "The Gated Community" vs "My Golden Egg"
C.3 (Boyz in the Sink): "Bellybutton Song" vs "A Mess Down in Egypt" vs "Bubble Rap"
Right Side:
A.1: "The Hairbrush Song" vs "The Biscuit of Zazzamarandabo"
A.2: "Larry's High Silk Hat" vs "Supper Hero"
A.3: "I Love My Lips" vs "Sippy Cup"
A.4: "Schoolhouse Polka" vs "Kilts and Stilts"
B.1: "Song of the Cebu" vs "Pants"
B.2: "Pizza Angel" vs "Asteroid Cowboys"
B.3: "His Cheeseburger" vs "Goodnight Junior"
B.4: "Lance the Turtle" vs "Mac and Cheese"
C.1 (Bonus Pirates [Round 1 Pass]): "Do the Moo Shoo" vs "The Credits Song" vs "Rock Monster"
C.2: (Christmas [Round 1 Pass]): "Oh, Santa!" vs "The Eight Polish Foods of Christmas" vs "Wrapped Myself Up for Christmas"

anyone who used to be an avid reader:
do any of y'all feel like at some point in the past ... 5-10 years, or maybe even as recently as the last 3 years, that some significant shift happened in your brain and now you like for some reason have a really really hard time reading anything longer than like a few hundred words? Like even the idea of starting something new, especially if you know it's going to be long, is just immediately exhausting?
This goes especially for my fellow writers, specifically novelists. Do y'all feel like in the past few years you have become almost numbed to the magic of both reading and writing, in particular anything long-form? Do you also feel like there has been a big shift in the willingness of others to read your writing?
And lastly, are you able to better focus on comics/shows/visual media but the idea of purely text stories seems exhausting and/or overwhelming, despite the fact that you used to love reading books?
Alternately, do you perhaps ONLY read and have little to no interest in doing anything else BUT reading, and this has also developed in recent years?
I have this vibe that this is maybe a widespread thing and not just me and my depression/anxiety sapping the magic out of my favorite things in life, but I don't really have any proof for it so I just want to see if other people feel the same.
I'll make a poll just so it's easier for more people to respond since we're talking about willingness/interest to read or write anything long xD

On a scale of Blegh to Slay Girl, which OB character design is the best and worst?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll be talking about my own thoughts in this post, but if you're interested in seeing a larger sample size's opinion on this question, you can check out the results of this poll! Vil was initially hardcore in the lead, but over time (I think because someone datamined and shared Malleus's full body OB design during the period in which the poll ran) Malleus overtook him.
From personal Blegh (worst/least liked) to Slay Girl (best/most liked):
Azul — This is the first “real” look we’ve had of his true form, and it doesn’t leave a good impression on me. It’s not that I don’t like Azul’s look as an octopus, the proportions of his tentacles just seem… off?? Like I feel like they should be much longer than they actually are. Additionally, the design of the tentacles makes them look plasticy and fake, almost like pool toys you’d blow up and then whack around in the water.
I also feel like because of Azul being an octopus, the design feels a little empty and the designers overcompensated by cover up the empty space (ie slapping random stuff on). The placement of the shells on his lower body is very weird on him, and compared to his collar (the necklace, the coral spiking off his shoulders) there’s not a lot happening here. The harsh black blot against the grey-purple of his skin also looks very jarring (which, as you’ll see, will continue to be a point of contention for me as we get into other OBs). Perhaps the only element I like in Azul’s OB is his crown, which resembles King Triton’s (you know, after Ursula yoinked it from him). It’s not too much embellishment like the elements at his collar, and it’s not oddly placed like the shells are.
Vil — I like his sleeves, veil, and little metal talons!! I also appreciate this his single glowing eye has blot running down like tears or running mascara! … That’s about it. I find that nothing else about his look does it for me 💦 Vil’s chest feels… oddly empty?? It’s like he has no form at all there because of how unnaturally smooth it is. And while I kind of get where the devs are going with the religious imagery and the incorporation of peacock feathers, I don’t think it all visually meshes very well together. The blot that his fabric fades into ends up looking like weird clumps of hair sticking onto the ends of Vil’s train and sleeves because no one was there to hold them up for him to keep them clean.
His crown is meant to make him look regal and imposing, but I just giggle a little because it looks so… chunky that it comes off as comedic and top-heavy (like he’ll keel over from the weight of it any second now). Yes, I understand it’s the same crown as that of the Beautiful Queen; I just think the extra things they added to it (ie the peacock feathers in the halo) gives additional weight that isn’t needed. I’m not sure if I get the weird spikes at his waist either; it was probably to better color distribute the scarce white in his look, but I feel like some other design element would have made it look less disjointed.
Malleus — This look is what I jokingly call “Nosferatu”; it reminds me a LOT of a stereotypical vampire, from the cape and slicked back hair to the zombie-like tint to the skin and draconian is this considered a pun clothing. The skin (being a reference to Maleficent) is, of course, a muted green color. That… just makes Malleus look hella seasick to me DX maybe like he has some cyanosis coming on??? In any case, I don’t like it. hdisbskskxos ANOTHER THING, THE GLOW IN THE DARK/LIGHT UP HORNS AND TAIL ARE SO FUNNY 😂 It doesn’t make me take him seriously as a threat when he’s over here lighting up like a lava lamp.
The main thing that makes me like this design a little over Vil’s is that the colors of neon green and deep blue-purple offer a greater contrast between the super dark parts of his clothing. There are also little details I appreciate, like how the blot on Malleus’s face forms little black scales like that of a dragon or a lizard and the continuous incorporation of thorns throughout the design. There are thorns over his torso, thorns crawling up his waist, thorns forming the “cage” of his skirt, and thorns climbing up from his cape—it really sells the imagery that his own insecurities and loneliness are swallowing him. The thorns on his chest are of particular interest to me 👁️ It’s like Malleus has “walled off” his heart to intruders, refusing to let them into his perfect dream world where no one leaves him. It just works well thematically!!
Jamil — I know Jamil’s OB design is really unpopular. I didn’t initially like it that much either, but the more and more I thought about it, the more I realized that while I don’t think the outfit is awful, it’s Jamil’s physical traits that drive people off from him. I actually really enjoy many elements of his OB: the tattered veil, how his skirt flares out at the end, the shoes, the beads, the draping cloth of his sleeves… The problem is, that’s not what my eyes are immediately drawn to. I’m way too busy staring at his snake hair and fake facial hair to notice anything else 😂
The snake hair looks so goofy (I think because of them lacking a lot of detail), and I'm not sure if the hair turban was a good choice either. I think it gives kind of clashing ideas as well??? The idea of snake hair invokes thoughts of Medusa, who is more closely linked to Greek mythology (which, thematically speaking, is more of an Ignihyde thing than a Scarabia thing; I’m not saying that Idia should have snake hair, but the fact that it was put on Jamil who had no association with Greek mythology may feel slightly off). The blot pooling at his chin and forming pseudo facial hair is also pretty silly (I know it's to mimic Jafar's goatee, but it's still weird to see on Jamil). Altogether, it creates a weird initial impression, especially when combined with the various over-the-top facial expressions Jamil makes while in this form.
Riddle — Here’s the part where I admit I probably ranked Riddle high due in part to nostalgia and because I’m really into Alice in Wonderland motifs 🤡 I think it’s a nicely balanced design, not only because of the even distribution of black and red in the dress (plus white as a much needed accent color), but you very clearly get the “Queen of Hearts” vibe without the very obvious overabundance of hearts everywhere. There’s a lot of neat little details, like the roses at his waist, the “spider legs” of playing cards, the loops of the bow that form a “heart” behind him, and the incorporation of suits into his choker and various other areas.
One thing that I think helps Riddle really stand out is just how small he is compared to everyone else; his OB outfit helps to further emphasize that, with the length of his dress’s train curling around him. We see the size difference highlighted in the battle against him as well. Riddle’s Phantom looks over him while he floats slightly hunched over, as if a puppet on strings. It makes me think of how his mother still has a strong hold on him, so she’s the one “in control” of his strings, the one influencing his toxic behavior. That lends Riddle’s OB a lot more personality in my eyes.
Idia — Cringe lines aside, I like how different and dynamic Idia’s OB is! The electronic mouth guard helps him be a lot more expressive than he usually is, and all the blue flames and swirling blot creates a super distinctive look. (I’m especially a fan of the vortex of blot that makes up the lower half of his design.) Blue and black work really well together, and I also feel like that color combination is good for emphasizing the sleek, cybernetic armor Idia sports, with the black part being metal and the blue part being the lights/energy/magic/electricity coursing through that powers it.
I guess the one big con against Idia’s design is that it doesn’t much resemble Hades. However, I tend to find that I have a preference for more subtle design elements in OBs, so I don’t really mind this. There’s enough sprinkled in to get the idea, from the stripe of cloth hanging from Idia’s clavicle to the slender (resembling the robes of Hades), pointed fingers of his gloves (again, similar to Hades), and even the vortex of his armor (like the spirits of the underworld swirling around). A lot of the tech elements help make Idia stand out and tie back to the trauma he experienced, so I think retaining the robotic nature of the OB is a must!
Leona — The single major qualm I have with this design is his lack of footwear 🥲 I never want to see bare feet (I won’t go into detail, but let’s just say it’s related to a traumatic childhood memory). Other than that, I think this is the most cohesive design of the OB boys. It's not too much, but it's also not too little, and the colors aren't too garish, nor too much black. The slicked back hair and furry collar resemble a lion's mane, and even something as understated as Leona's silhouette is made to better resemble his Disney counterpart (Scar's body shape is replicated using a corset of sorts). The blot covering his hands also gives him sharper nails, similar to a lion's claws. Leona's jewelry is also an interesting choice; the necklaces, of course, resemble the teeth of a predator, but everywhere else the jewelry seems very shackle and chain-like, perhaps alluding to how Leona feels resigned to his fate because of something he cannot control (his birth order). He's trying to break free of those attempts to keep him down, rebelling against people's low expectations of him.
The fabric that's draped over his lower half is a little on-the-nose; it's ramshackle and stitched together, resembling "scars" (geddit, cuz "Scar"). In the context of an OB though, I think I can overlook this. All of them feel broken, so seeing torn and ruined elements only makes sense. You can see his tail chilling inside of that cage of stitched fabric, but just barely because there's also golden cloth in front mostly covering it. To me, this is a good thing because tails on humanoid characters kind of unnerves me 😅
Anyway, those are my thoughts on all the OB designs ^^ I hope that was at least somewhat interesting to read.

Best Underrated Anime Group E Round 2: #E7 vs #E3
#E7: Teenage boys use empathy to solve problems for youkai
#E3: Sending us penguins will NOT fix our terminally ill sister, but thanks anyways
Details and poll under the cut!
Tumblr media
#E7: The Morose Mononokean (Fukigen na Mononokean)
youtube
Summary:
Without realizing it, a high schooler named Ashiya Hanae shows kindness to a youkai and is subsequently possessed by it on the first day of class. The spirit clings to his shoulder, making him progressively sicker each day. After a week of collapsing on his way into school, Ashiya notices a “Help Wanted” flyer for an exorcism service in the nurse’s office. Desperate, he calls the service, only to find that it is run by his grumpy classmate.
Abeno Haruitsuki prefers youkai to humans, sleeps through class, and is the master of a sentient tea room called the Mononokean, where youkai come for help with their problems. It turns out that they’re mostly benign, and exorcising them to the Underworld is safer for them. Ashiya convinces Abeno to exorcise the spirit possessing him, but Abeno demands he work part-time for the Mononokean as repayment. Abeno’s intimate knowledge of the spirit world and Ashiya’s empathetic nature form a great contrast as they work together.
Propaganda:
The Morose Mononokean is a beautifully written and animated coming-of-age story— with youkai, which can only ever make a piece of media better. The characters, both human and youkai, are fully three-dimensional, and although there isn’t much of an overarching plot in the first season/early manga chapters, the episodic stories contribute to the growth of both Ashiya and Abeno; their juxtaposed methods of problem-solving, and the way they affect and learn from each other’s perspectives as they become closer, are very satisfying both to analyze and to experience on an emotional level. Beyond the writing, the art is outstanding as well. The designs for the youkai characters are frequently adorable, occasionally terrifying, and always quite original, brilliantly incorporating characteristics of existing creatures in novel ways. The occasional visits to the Underworld are always a visual treat, with vibrant colors and a unique animation style painting the backdrop. Both the art and the characters are delightful and moving, and the OP is a banger. As a connoisseur of urban fantasy, Fukigen na Mononokean’s focus on emotion over action has made it my all-time favorite anime in the genre.

#E3: Mawaru Penguindrum
youtube
Summary:
For the Takakura family, destiny is an ever-spinning wheel, pointing passionately in their direction with equal tides of joy and sorrow before ticking on to the next wishmaker. With their parents gone, twin brothers Kanba and Shouma live alone with their beloved little sister Himari, whose poor health cannot decline any further.
On the day Himari is given permission to temporarily leave the hospital, her brothers take her out to the aquarium to celebrate, where the family's supposed fate is brought forth with her sudden collapse. However, when Himari is inexplicably revived by a penguin hat from the aquarium's souvenir shop, the hand of fate continues to tick faithfully forward.
With her miraculous recovery, though, comes a cost: there is a new entity within her body, whose condition for keeping her fate at bay sends the boys on a wild goose chase for the mysterious "Penguin Drum." In their search, the boys will have to follow the threads of fate leading from their own shocking past and into the lives of other wishmakers vying for the Penguin Drum, all hoping to land upon their chosen destiny.
Propaganda:
Do you like weird artsy stuff? Do you love magical girls? How about weird, messed up character dynamics? Then boy oh boy, Mawaru Penguindrum is the show for you! The show starts out funny enough, but will quickly spiral into an intense and intricate plot, involving fate, the mafia, magical destiny-rewriting spells, and penguins. Which yes, before you ask, the funny penguins are in fact plot relevant.
Penguindrum isn’t really a show about all that stuff though, even though it is. It’s a very symbolic story, about living under the crushing heel of capitalism, and the quiet poison of the societally expected nuclear family dynamic. I could write an essay on each and every single one of the characters, as they’re all given a lot of depth and time to grow. Every character has their own baggage that, one way or another, ties back to someone else. Everyone in this show is connected in some way shape or form, and that’s really highlighted when everything starts to fall apart. Be warned: this show is NOT a light watch! If you’re the type of person who gets really into deciphering symbolism and creating your own meaning from pieces of media, then this show is for you!
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Flashing Lights/Flickering Images, Gender Identity/Sexuality Discrimination, Guns, Incest, Kidnapping, Nudity, Pedophilia, Rape/Non-Con, Smoking, Suicide, Bomb Threats/Attempts and Terrorisim
It’s a very major plot point. This show is HEAVILY based off the 95 Tokyo Sarin Gas Attacks, so if content like that is triggering to you, tread lightly.

What's your favorite costume version for all the batkids?
Oooh okay!! I'll go through a bunch but there are batkids I just don't have strong opinions on in this subject (namely Damian and Duke I'm so sorry)
1. So for Dick obviously the finger stripes are top quality but listen. Listen.
Tumblr media
I know it's over the top. I know it's ridiculous. I know he's showing a ridiculous amount of boob and that can't be safe. But tell me that it's not PEAK Dick Grayson. Overdramatic, over the top, sexy and impractical. Is it a good outfit for fighting crime in? Not even a little. Is it my favorite of every single one of his outfits?? Abso fucking lutely.
2. Jason's outfits post robin are all variations on the same theme, and while I like the hoodie look just fine, ultimately I'm here to be as horny as possible about Jason Todd and the leather jacket look is PEAK so
Tumblr media
I m e a n
Tumblr media
I think we can all agree that this is just. I want to sit on his lap. And just. Wiggle around a little till I'm comfortable. Don't talk to me
3. Tim has gone through a lot of costume variations - there was actually a poll a few weeks ago to decide which was the best one and at the time I voted for option 3:
Tumblr media
And I think I voted for it mostly because of what it symbolizes, because if I'm going to be honest, the one I find the most visually compelling is his current suit:
Tumblr media
I just think it's so elegant! Should he narratively still be Robin right now? Absolutely not. Do I think that this design is ridiculously aesthetically pleasing? Yes yes I do.
4. Cass is a character who hasn't had many costume designs, but they've all been really distinct from one another. My personal favorite is the Batgirl outfit:
Tumblr media
It's just so scary!!! Like it really defines her in so many ways, both as a person and as a vigilante, but the stitch on the mask is just so fucking horrifying and I LOVE it
5. Final one for now (again so sorry Damian and Duke you have good costumes I just don't have strong opinions about them 😭) Steph!!! Like Cass, not many costumes, but they all feel like her, which I love. The Batgirl outfit and modern Spoiler costume are both phenomenal, like genuinely I don't think she has a flop. However I really like the OG:
Tumblr media
She's just a shadow!! She has no face!!! She chooses to dress in bright purple eggplant and yet she's still seamlessly blending into the shadows and it's SO GOOD. The only other character who does this is literally batman. I'm just. Ugh I'm in awe of this design it's so good
Thank you for asking this was so much fun to compile!!!!! And now I have all these photos saved in my phone to just bring out like "these are my blorbos" and show to strangers like grandmothers do with their grandkids
(I already had the thigh photo saved I'm not going to even pretend otherwise)

Aurora
Summary: Kyle underestimates how easy it is to just say whatever comes to mind when you're tired, so does Kenny.
Warnings: swearing, accidental confessions, check Ao3 port for full tags
Authors Note: the stargazing fluff won the poll, so I hope ya'll enjoy it. it took me a bit longer to write than expected, but I'd say the visualizations turned out pretty good. I was sort of going for a warm feeling, like, home cooked meals 'n fuzzy blankets, but in written form- it's just a soft and fluffy fic, with a very specific vibe I tried to emulate.
Tumblr media
Kyle really wishes he was a heavy sleeper when the sound of his phone vibrating atop his desk wakes him up. He just listens for a brief moment, staring at the dull ceiling of the bedroom he's been trapped in for so many years. He reaches out to answer it and pulls it relatively close to his ear.
"Whoever's calling, you're going to get kicked in the nuts so hard your heart skips a beat," Kyle threatened, his grogginess counters it easily. For a second he thinks they hung up, then their voice comes across the receiver.
"Damn okay, never call the smartest guy I know ever again," Kenny said, a bit of a chuckle on his voice.
That hot-wires something in Kyle because he's sitting up and swinging his legs over the edge of the bed. Any previous sleepiness is easily stifled and snuffed out. He glances to his clock, "Your sleep medication wore off early again?"
Kenny gave a hum, "Yep, can't have anymore until two AM because it's a prescription, and I can't have it off schedule. And, and, and- you know how it is."
"Right, so you decide to call me at midnight because why?" Kyle asked as he stood up and made his way to his closet. It's not like he's falling asleep again anytime soon, might as well slip into something more practical. He grabs a jacket and his hat, pajama pants are perfectly practical.
"There's like, northern lights tonight man, they're supposed to start at twelve forty," Kenny explained, Kyle found euphoria on his voice. The McCormick gave a light sigh and Kyle could perfectly envision his expression, "It's kind of dumb, but, I think it's cool."
"It is cool," Kyle said defensively. He tugged on his jacket as he spoke, "Super cool. And I'm not just saying that either," He is. A little bit. But Kenny doesn't need to know that.
"Thanks," Kenny said quietly, "The other guys said it was lame when I brought it up earlier. I'm getting off track."
"You are," Kyle said as he reached for the door handle.
"Basically, I'm on my way to your house right now. Meet me out front so we can go to Starks Pond and look at the sky?" Kenny asked nervously.
Kyle can feel the heat rising to his face at the connotations of Starks Pond. He's stunned into silence as his mind races with the fact that Kenny's asking him to go to Starks Pond. The place where many confess, or go fishing, or confess, or kayak, or confess-
"So, that's a no?" Kenny asked, snapping Kyle from his thoughts with ease.
"Should I grab a blanket?" Kyle answered with.
"If you're too weak to handle a little bit of cold," Kenny said, a playful challenge to his words.
Kyle gives a pleased hum, "I'll meet you out front man."
"Yes! Thanks in advance! Love you bro!" Kenny exclaimed, words assaulting Kyle's ears at a slightly higher decibel than the rest.
"Love you too bro," Kyle said, hiding the crack in his voice as best as he could before Kenny hung up. He heaved a full body sigh as he grabbed a light, fuzzy blanket from his bed.
What has he gotten himself into?
Well, to start, a night outside with his best friend slash long time crush. Of course, no one knows about his absolutely debilitating crush on Kenny aside from his journals. So, he's roped himself into sitting around Starks Pond, fucking stargazing with Kenny. And he has to be normal that entire time? He just, he has to stay on his side of the line, and not, under any circumstance, cross over onto Kenny's. Which is a lot easier to do when Cartman is standing around, or if Stan is in the room. This time, there is no one to stifle him from getting a little bit too close to play off as 'just friends' and he knows, deep down, that he will fuck this up.
To reiterate, what has he gotten himself into?
-/-/-/-
"I never took you for a starry kind of guy," Kyle said as he tugged the blanket over his shoulders a little tighter.
Kenny shrugged, "I just think they look cool," He leaned his head back, hands rested behind it, "I don't know a whole lot, but, I know enough."
"Neat," Kyle answered with.
Snow crunched under their boots as they crossed from somewhat icy concrete to snowy grass. There's almost a serenity to it. The stillness of the air, the clouds only faintly spread across the sky, the deafening sound of his heartbeat ringing in his ears. It's silent, and for Kyle it isn't a comfortable one. Kenny looks rather fine with it, a hint of a smile on his face as they circle Starks Pond to the old gnarled tree that's long since lost it's last leaves.
"When are they starting?" Kyle asked, the abruptness caught Kenny off guard. He tilted his head to face Kyle so face he's sure it gave the blonde whiplash.
"What?" Kenny answered with, a perplexed look clear on his face. He shoved his hands a little deeper into the pockets of his parka.
"The northern lights. The reason we came out here. When does the light show start?" Kyle asked, he was laughing a bit, he didn't know why. He's pretty sure he's grinning, he can feel wisps of cold on his teeth. He shuffles his blanket a bit.
"Right! Northern lights, fuck man. Nearly forgot. Should be starting soon," Kenny said sheepishly. He brings the heel of his palm to his forehead in one brisk motion. He gives Kyle a bit of a smile, "Thanks for reminding me, I swear to god man, those sleep meds are messing with me."
"You're never this out of your mind man, never," Kyle said with a nod of agreement as tapped the steel tipped toe of his boot against the trunk of the tree. He did it until a chip of bark came off.
"It feels like those things are keeping me up at night, not down," Kenny rambled back as he paced around the tree. He was running out of things to say, "You don't mind getting wet?"
"What?" Kyle asked, bluntly at that. He just stared at Kenny.
"Like, sit on the snow. It melts. It's wet. We could lay out the blanket," Kenny offered, he gesticulated vaguely as he spoke. He clasped his hands in front of his chest, "I'm not standing up as we watch the light show."
Kyle leaned against the tree before sliding down, the blanket caught on the bark. He kept his knees hitched, he patted the spot beside him and Kenny dropped down. The snow crunched as it compacted under his weight, one leg outstretched and the other bent. He leaned against Kyle a bit, the redhead threw some blanket over his shoulders.
"Thanks," Kenny whispered out, and the cold biting at his face was the only excuse Kyle could form for the red rising to his cheeks.
He murmured back a soft, "You're welcome."
Kyle let his head rest on Kenny's, the blonde barely repressed a smile. He leaned his head atop the redhead's shoulder just a bit more, arms crossed over his chest to hold in the heat. The fabric was thin, worn down over many years of use, and restitched where it tore. He glanced up to the sky, the faintest wisps of green were starting to show amidst the inky ocean of stars.
He pointed to the part of the sky where the color was starting to waver, "Dude."
Kyle followed where he pointed, "Cool."
The green hues curled and splayed across the sky in rivulets of neon color. The headiest almost silvery greens lay at the bottom and faded up into a deep pink. The further out he looked, it almost turned to a golden haze, still distinct in striking patterns.
"I love you, Kyle," Kenny said, words coming out seamlessly as he pushed himself against Kyle a little bit more.
"Love you too, Kenny" Kyle echoed back, he barely registered what he saying until Kenny lifted his head up.
The blonde reared back on his knees, catching Kyle in eye contact, "Really?"
Kyle nodded, "Yeah," Why bother lying? He knew he'd fucked it up.
"Cool," Kenny said, there was a short circuit somewhere in his head as he wedged his way between Kyle's legs. He was on autopilot and Kyle wasn't shoving him off. He slumped back, Kyle's chest pressed flush against Kenny's back, "Cool."
Kyle paused to let the word soak in, "Cool?"
"Yeah, cool," Kenny echoed back, "It's pretty damn cool that you love me. Because I love you."
"Yeah, that is pretty cool," Kyle said quietly, he rested his hands at Kenny's abdomen. He pressed a kiss to the top of Kenny's head, "Pretty fucking cool."

For the tree poll I had to go with Legend. He already runs full speed into trees with his Pegasus Boots for items or to talk with the tree or just as a convenient way to stop. I don’t see why having wings would change this habit.
Do they have hollow bones in your Wing Au? Do they have to be more careful not to hurt them selves?
And I think Four has Pegasus Boots but I can’t remember if he also rams trees with his face.
"I can't remember if he also rams trees with his face" actually made my day oh my god it just gave me the greatest mental visual thank you I'll have to draw that now!😂
I actually hadn't answered my own poll about the trees but your justification for why it would be Legend FULLY convinced me so it's canon now sorry I don't make the rules (I actually do). But I can already hear him in the distance squawking and cursing Hylia and the others for laughing cause he finally has people who can and will laugh at him for all of his bad habits.😂 I know that Four does have Pegasus Boots and I'm prettyyyyy sure he also rams trees with his face but for some reason I feel like he does it with more dignity than Legend if that makes any sense?
As for your question about them having hollow bones, I will give the very vague answer of yes, they do have hollow bones so they can like...fly, but at the same time they also probably won't break anything running into trees. They are heroes afterall! They're built different! Most of them at least. Some Links are definitely more...fragile than others. :))))
So yes, while all the Links do have wings and share certain bird characteristics they are also mostly human so I believe that they really only need to be careful about any injuries to their wings. Turns out hauling around a broken wing and/or a wing with severed muscles can be very difficult and dangerous when you're on the road fighting monsters 24/7.

WELCOME TO THE A3! PLAY SHIP BATTLE ROYALE!
"Holy shit, another Tumblr poll!?" you ask. Well. Yes. Why? Um. My friends brought up the idea and I have terrible impulse control. ANYWAY.
DO YOU LIKE A3! PLAYS!? DO YOU LIKE MAKING THE FUNNY LITTLE A3! PLAY CHARACTERS KISS!? BOY, DO I HAVE THE POLL FOR YOU!
Welcome, one and all, to the A3! Play Ship Battle Royale, where we pit our favorite a3 play ships against other people's favorite a3 play ships and hopefully spawn either a couple new ao3 fic tags, a silly crossover piece of art, a newfound appreciation for a3 plays, or...! I ran out of stuff. But you get the gist.
SUBMISSION RULES AND GUIDELINES
- The ship must be a play ship. The characters do not have to be from the same play! Extended playverse ships are allowed, provided that at least one person in the ship is a canon play character AND you can provide a visual of the extended play character/s. Ships between a play character and an actor are NOT allowed for the bracket at this time (but maybe it'll change in the future).
- The play ship in question does NOT need to be a main troupe/mixed play. Ships from other plays like Royal Blue or Inner Palace are allowed!
- Play characters must be within an appropriate age range with one another. I'll leave that to your discretion as to what counts as "appropriate", but as a general rule: no adults with anyone younger than college age. Also, please don't submit ships where the characters are related to one another.
- You do not have to ship the actors who play the characters, as long as you ship the play characters themselves. (Just as an example, you can submit Luke/S, even if you don't ship Citron/Tsuzuru.) Specifically, though, I will not accept ships played by Juza/Kumon/Muku, or Azami/Sakyo, even if the play ship is technically okay. I won't consider those submissions.
- In case I get a lot of submissions (like, a lot of submissions), I'll do my best to provide a mix of popularity in the poll. In case that a certain actor pairing has a lot of submitted play ships, I'll likely just choose two or three of them. If your submitted ship didn't make it, I'm really sorry! ><
- Submissions that don't follow the rules will not be considered. Also, if a certain pair makes me wildly uncomfortable, I probably won't consider it, sorry. Unless it's, like, really, really popular or something.
POLL RULES AND GUIDELINES
- Be nice to each other in the notes! If I see the shooters of any particular ship being nasty, I will give one (1) warning only. If you can't get your act together after that, I will disqualify the ship.
- Propaganda is allowed and encouraged! Silly crack fics are allowed and encouraged! Funny art is allowed and encouraged! I want everyone's brain juices to start flowing!
- This poll is run by one person, so please be patient! And please be nice, I'm fragile.
GOT THAT? YOU CAN SUBMIT YOUR SHIPS HERE!
(submissions will be open until may 19, or i'll close them if i get way too many submissions that i start struggling.)
Special shoutout to some of the other tournaments that inspired this! @weirdass-shiptournament and @a3rarepairstournament in particular! Heart emojis.
(last note, i won't be submitting any ships myself, but if you're interested in hearing my personal play ships, um. i guess you can ask, but it might take a while for me to get back to you because dms scare me, lol.)

Never Let Me Go Ep 12 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
Probably the show I'm most worried about sticking the finale this week.
Last time, we mostly collected all of the pieces and set the stage for the finale. Everyone either pointed a gun or had a gun pointed at them last week, except for Chanon who had a somewhat rushed reconciliation with Palm before exiting the story. The power of gay love brought Tanya out of her coma. We also scattered Mam's ashes. Kit is a terrible villain, who seemed to genuinely believe he could make Palm hurt Neungdiao. Palm demanded Kit shoot him. Neungdiao demanded Palm shoot him. Kit demanded Chopper shoot him. Neungdiao demanded Kit shoot him. So, someone is definitely getting shot today.
I shouldn't laugh, but Phuwin's face in these ransom messages is sending me.
I want to believe in Chopper, but I don't trust him showing up in all black.
Episode Title: Forever. Pack it in, everyone. We all were wrong on the poll.
Nat is so good. I like how they've had him playing villains or sketch dudes lately.
Phuwin's reaction as Neungdiao seeing Palm get shot is convincing. I like when they let Phuwin play big emotions. First noticed it on The Gifted: Graduation.
He shot his dad! I'm so glad Perth joined GMMTV. Pairing him with Nat was a big brain decision.
Well, we did foreshadow Palm's shoulders last episode.
Whoever it was that shot Kit's arm is really good.
Neungdiao, hands covered in Palm's blood, being pulled away from the door to surgery by Ben and Chopper is a fantastic visual.
Perth is a pretty crier.
I saw @respectthepetty posting earlier about the romantic chemistry between Perth and Chimon and have to agree. I hope they have time to workshop the romance before they start filming Dangerous Romance.
Phuwin and Pond are really pretty. I liked Pond joking in the latest BTS that Phuwin's mom would hit him if he didn't say her son was pretty.
Palm losing feeling in one of his legs has to be devastating for someone as physically active as him.
We can't have two minutes of physical therapy without Palm running away in a preview. I swear.
Love where Ben's mind is at. My boy is consistent.
Big fan of Nuengdiao being stubborn and not letting Palm shove everyone away during his treatment.
Palm doesn't seem optimistic about telling Tanya.
Yes, Palm, take what Tanya said in the worst way possible.
These two and the running away notes.
Ah yes, the bar. Why is Palm alone? I feel like Chanon would want to be here to help Palm and connect with Mam's life.
I love Jojo. Now we get to watch Palm reminisce about sweet moments we didn't see earlier on the beach.
Phuwin has hips!!
I still think Tanya should manage the business and let Nuengdiao go to school.
I love Tanya. She said, "Go get your man."
Palm you can't be naming the bar after him and wearing the branded hat if you're also trying to distance yourself.
Oh my these two are so cheesy.
Palm be getting on my damn nerves about not accepting Nuengdiao's money.
I'm with Nuengdiao. He was clearly flirting from jump.
Hey, that was a pretty good final kiss.
Final Verdict: 8, Recommended. I enjoyed a lot of individual pieces in this show, but I don't think it all comes together exactly. I don't think I ever understood Palm's initial attraction and devotion to Nuengdiao, and some of the major machinations felt a bit forced. Still, I enjoyed all of the performances, and genuinely came to appreciate Pond between this and Dirty Laundry. I think if you are looking to enjoy bodyguard romance with class barrier, this show will do fine.

cause me for a second about to screech incoherently to the void
OKAY so going back over I found the guides I like for Old English pronunciations because I'm not good at it and can never remember how to pronounce things. So on the poll I was gushing in tags about where the word orange came from. In Old English we just used yellow-red or red-yellow, or technically the word was "geoluread." In today's English there's a few ways it could be read. "Geo" would likely use a "j" soundish like "geology." "Lu" and "luh" are fairly similar in modern and old English so just "uh" like "put." "Read" could be "red" or "reed."
SO I'm probably butchering how I say things (like I said still practicing) and explaining but this ramble is for fun so 'tis fine. I think the "eo" would be considered a front vowel so the "g" is said similarly to our "y" sound is "yes." "Eo" is better explained by this specific area of the website I'm on right now (lots I'll just between but this one has examples) as "like the 'e' in bed gliding to the 'o' in 'cough'" so "eh-aw" almost? Or the "aw" and "ough" in "awesome" and "cough" are identical in my accent (Texan accents do that fairly often.) Then of course the "luh" sound, and then "ea" is described as "ai" in fail. I saw fail differently from the speaker but from other descriptions and guides it seems similar to "ey-ah." Not exactly but I suck st describing things.
Y'all. "Geoluread" put together ("g" "eo" "lu" "read"). The best I can visualize it is "yeh-oh" "luh" "rey-ahd"
When we say yellow or at least the way I've grown up talking there's the slightest hint of an "o" between "eh" and "l." Just from how your move your mouth (same reason what did you becomes didja and what you becomes whatcha." Voicing the "o" in "eol" snf NOT voicing it has your mouth move almost the exact same way.
Geoluread is spelled so strangely to me but it's LITERALLY JUST YELLOW RED. IT'S THE SAME THING AS IT WAS IN THE 11TH CENTURY LMAO
And this also is cool to me (I am bored in class with nothing to do have been typing for well over ten minutes about a fruit word) is English has evolved a LOT but spelling and lexicon seem to have changed a lot more than pronunciation from Old English. This word is hard for me to pronounce because (and true for a lot of Old English words) the vowels have you holding your tongue a lot further back than speaking Modern English. That's a fun quirk I like about today's English—compared to a lot of similar languages (I.e. Spanish and French I believe? Been a bit since I've looked into this) we have a tongues naturally resting a lot higher (on roof of mouth vs bottom). And Modern English seems to pronounce sounds with the tongue closer to or touching the teeth than Old English does. I know of the Great Vowel Shift so I'm wondering if that whole 15-16th century language drama was the cause? I have done research on it but I don't have IPA Symbols memorized yet so it's hard to tell what the shift was responsible for and what is just the passage of time changing things.
So this is what I do if I get bored enough at school apparently. Lose my mind over pronunciations of words centuries ago because I saw one (1) poll about whether orange the color or orange the fruit came first (it was the fruit. Wasn't until Margaret Tudor around a century later I think that it was recorded to describe a color.)
