✦ What is your absolute all-time favourite idea you’ve ever had?
The one that inspired the novel I'm writing right now, The Sorcerer's Apprentice! Initially, I just wanted to explore the relationship between two individuals at completely polar opposite moments in life: one, an elderly character, preparing to die and looking back; and the other, a youthful character, just beginning to come into their own, in early adulthood, still figuring out who they are and what they believe in, facing forward. It would be a lie to say that the novel isn't still very much built around this dynamic, between the elderly sorcerer Valeriano and his young apprentice, Altaluna. But it's grown from the original idea to incorporate issues and topics I hadn't expected; climate change, environmental disaster, colonialism and neocolonialism, the body as a machine, contemporary theories of perception, abusive family dynamics, and more. These topics and their associated plot/world ideas are likewise what makes The Sorcerer's Apprentice my favourite written piece to date. It's like the more I dig, the more I enjoy what I'm doing. If the first idea was compelling but lukewarm, the accumulation of ideas that has ensued as I attempt to do the initial idea justice has taken it to the next level.
✦ Is there a question you’ve been asked that really stands out to you and that you still think about sometimes?
Not that I can think of off the top of my head! Sorry :S I wish I did.
✦ What is your favourite part of being a writer? What parts could you take or leave?
The trouble is, you can't have any of it without all of it, so this is a bit of a trick question, to which I don't really have a clear answer. I love it all. I hate it all. I struggle every step of the way. And I have the time of my life, always.
✦ What is your greatest motivation to write/create?
It's changed over the years! As a child, I just liked exercising my imagination. In my teens and early twenties, I wrote to escape or to envision the life I wanted, the person I wanted to be, and how I wanted to be perceived by others. Now, my greatest motivation is rage. I am one very pissed-off adult lol I suppose the difference is also that now I actually have something to say, something I feel is worth saying. And I feel that very strongly, which helps me get over the bad days at the desk where no words are coming or where I doubt my capacity to write at all. Because it doesn't matter. This -the message of my novel- has value to me. It's more important than my small personal feelings of insecurity or ups and downs. So I'll find a way. That's my motivation. It's not really that I want to write, it's that I have to. It's that I can't live in a world where this isn't said ~ and where it isn't said the way I'd like to say it.
✦ What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever read or been given as a writer?
The best advice I ever received was from a world-renowned author in his 90s who told me that it (writing) never gets any easier, so basically, your choices are either quit or keep going with the knowledge that it's never going to magically turn into a picnic, no matter how much experience/talent you have. I also got some lovely advice a couple years ago from (I think?) Anne Lamott in her writer's memoir Bird By Bird. In one of the chapters, she mentions that if you lack inspiration, you can always write to get your own back, aka. you can always write as a way to avenge yourself. And that just flipped a switch in my brain. I don't think I'd be writing The Sorcerer's Apprentice without that little seed she planted.
✦ What do you wish you knew when you were first starting out writing?
Nobody knows what they're doing. You'll never be more prepared than you are right this minute. But also, you have to live a little before you can know what you want to say ~ the same way you have to live a little to figure out who you are. Writing is organic. It grows with you. You have to let yourself grow, so the writing can follow.
✦ What is your favourite story you’ve written to completion? Link it if you’d like and can!
I don't have a favourite completed story to share, so I'm sharing a link to my current WIP, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a fantasy novel exploring the interplay between colonialism, capitalism, and environmental catastrophe through the fraught relationship between a mysterious sorcerer and his protogé.
✦ Which of your characters would you say has the most controversial mindset? Why do you say so, and how do you personally feel about their ideals?
Valeriano, the antagonist of The Sorcerer's Apprentice, is the only character I've ever written whose views are absolutely despicable in almost every way. I'd be very concerned if my readers don't find his mindset controversial. The man is sexist, racist, and classist; he discriminates against any LGBTQ+ classification that isn't his own (biphobia, anti-lesbian, etc.), he's morally perverse, and he bristles with a sense of in-born superiority. In short, he represents the polar opposite of my own personal views and ideals.
✦ If you, when you first started writing, met you now, what would younger you think?
A younger me would definitely not recognise me, let alone understand why I'm writing what I'm writing. And that's how it should be! I'm glad little me enjoyed a time when all that mattered were unicorns and fairies, and the world was bright, open, and good. I wouldn't take that away from little me for all the world, not for anything. Plus, I have the lingering feeling that little me would be proud of me anyway. Even if she doesn't quite get it. She'd trust me and my choices. We'd be different, but we'd be cool, you know?

desire - failure- guilt - hide
I shall join you in the emo band names
desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?
Nicolette wants, more than anything, her mother. She's just a young woman not ready to face the world alone, and she wants her mother to guide her. Is she open about it? Well, no, because no one around her cares about her except her ex, and her ex knows what she did already. As for fulfilling it, well, she got what she wanted, but did she really want what she got?
failure: What's your OC's greatest failure? Have they been able to move past it? Does anyone else know about it?
See the above, but at the risk of spoilers, she actually didn't fail her goal so much as fail to comprehend to problems that achieving it would cause. In fact, objectively, she succeeded very well at the thing she tried to do, more than anyone, especially her, realizes for quite a while. But there is a reason it was forbidden...
guilt: What is your OC guilty about? How do they handle their guilt? Do they try to avoid guilt, or do they accept it?
At first, Nicolette feels guilt primarily for her perceived failure, followed by generalized guilt for being alive. As the story unfolds and the enormity of her mistakes become clear to her, the guilt really piles on, for the people she's hurt, for the problems she's caused, and for the selfishness that led her there to begin with.
hide: What does your OC hide? Why do they hide it?
The reanimated corpse of her mother. I think the reasons are obvious.

🍩 for the ask game! For tales of the librarian? Though of you prefer a different one that's fun too.
@duckingwriting
Hi Duck, thanks for the ask, sorry it's taken so long to get back to you.
🍩 [Donut] What's the weirdest thing someone eats in your WIP? What's the best thing?
Hmm, this is a tough one as I don't really talk much about what people eat in the Tales of the Librarian series. I honestly don't think there's anything too weird that anyone would eat, though I think eating something that was made by a squiggly-diddle-fied pot or pan or something would be very weird indeed (there's probably some sort of aftertaste that is best not to think about too hard when you consider what squiggly diddles do.... I'll make a worldbuilding post about those so everyone can have some sort of context for this part of the answer. Be prepared to be either thoroughly weirded out or mildly disgusted).
As for the best thing anyone eats; I think that's probably the custard pies made by the Toreguarde council chambers resident cook. Apparently the recipe is an old family one and there's some sort of secret ingredient involved that Martha refuses to share any information about. One of her apprentices makes a really nice lamb stew that all the council members constantly rave about. Sadly Selene doesn't get to eat that very often given how often Schreiber wants to get any Triumverate meetings over and done with as quickly as possible, so there's rarely any time for actual meals. Selene will confess to being a bit jealous of the members of the council that work in the chambers full time due to this.

You already got a few trick or treat asks so how about something different!
Uhhhh- a treat or trick! No. Trit or treak? Lol 🤕
Just, Happy Halloween!
Here's some candy: 🍫🍫🍫🪥🍫🍫 >:)
Ooooh candy😄 Thanks, bestie! Happy Halloween! Hope you get all your favorite treats!👻🦇🎃🍫🍭🍬
(Fun fact: I'm actively avoiding the bag of candy I bought for trick-or-treaters. So far, I've been successful but there's still two-ish days to go😔🤞)
I'm gonna go with treat and drop a cookie recipe inspired by Embers of Eternity (and here's the scene to go along with it!) (also sorry for the U.S. measurements! They're all I know😅):
Butter Chip Cookies:
Ingredients: 1 cup salted butter, browned ½ cup granulated sugar 1 cup light brown sugar 1 - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 eggs 2 ¼ cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup mini chocolate chips, divided
Directions:
In a small pot, brown butter over medium heat. Stir constantly and watch carefully. It will take a few minutes for the butter to begin to turn brown. Once the butter begins to turn, remove from heat and continue to stir until the butter is a caramel-brown color.
Pour butter in a large mixing bowl to cool and set aside.
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. Using a mixer, beat butter, brown sugar, sugar, and vanilla together. Add half of the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix to incorporate, then add the remaining flour mixture until combined.
Add the eggs, mixing until well combined. Let the dough rest for a few minutes.
Scoop dough into balls and place on baking sheet with room for cookies to spread.
Bake at 375°F for about 10 minutes or until golden.
Recipe Notes:
Flour may be substituted for a one-to-one gluten-free flour alternative. It doesn’t change the recipe at all.
I personally like to use 1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract, but you should listen to what feels right in your soul.
Letting the dough rest before scooping it into cookies is to help prevent them from spreading too thin and is essential to baking a proper butter chip cookie.
If, for whatever reason, a whole batch of cookies isn’t needed all at once, still form all of the cookies and place whatever quantity of the unbaked cookie dough is unneeded on a baking sheet and place in the freezer until the dough is frozen. Store in a sealed airtight container and thaw as needed before baking them to enjoy.

For the Fantasy Ask Game with The Art of Empty Space:
KING - How long have you been working on this WIP and its world?
&
WIZARD - Who is your favourite character in this WIP? Describe them!
--@ceph-the-ghost-writer
thanks for the ask, Ceph! this has been sitting in my drafts for ages now 😅
KING
Looks like I made a folder for it in Nov 2022, which means it was probably kicking around in my head a bit longer than that :) But by far, most of the work that's been put into it was done during November 2023 (it was my NaNo project).
WIZARD
Lienzo, hands down. he knows it, the other characters know it, and it's a problem. he loves poetry, coffee, and alternating between making Baz's life hell and obsessing over him (then making his life hell for occupying so much of Lienzo's brainspace). he's made of 50% sass, 25% abandonment issues, 25% Bad Decisions, and 0% binder safety. he's my disaster child and i love him

WIP Tropes Tag
My thanks to @sam-glade for tagging me here!
Rules: highlight the tropes that feature in your WIP
Gentle tags for: @mariahwritesstuff @thedahliafrog @aalinaaaaaa @late-to-the-fandom
I'll preface this by saying: I don't know tropes that well and I don't think many of these apply here . . . but for The Tectomany Saga, I'll do my best!
Found Family | The Chosen One | The Martyr | Surprise, Bitch! You thought I was dead | Enemies/Rivals put together for a project | Teen gets kidnapped; parent goes on killing spree to find them | Happy Ever After | Black and White Morality | Fight scene turns into a make-out session | Only one bed | The airport/train/bus station love confession | AUs | Amnesia story | Villain and hero fall in love | Love triangles | Bookworm falls for the bad guy | Killing off the audience’s fave characters | Smalltown falls for Big-City | Princess kisses a frog & gets Prince Charming | Villain redeemed | Protagonist beats “best in the world” | Enemies to friends to lovers | It was all a dream! | Coming of age story

33 and 34 for the weirdly specific character asks!!!
Yay! Thanks for the ask!
From this ask list
How do they greet someone they dislike / hate? and How do they greet someone they like / love?
I'll do the main ones from Abracadabra that I have answers for, lol
Greeting someone they don't like/hate:
Rod: Don't like: He'll walk into whatever room they're in and address them by whatever name they're currently going by. No frills, no fun, no fanfare. Right to the point, and no games Hate: He doesn't really use time hating someone; there are people he likes, people he doesn't like, people he's indifferent to, and people he's killed. Because boy howdy, if someone actually manages to piss him off it's not a good thing.
Kashi: Don't like: She'll snarl and pull out the knife at her hip. Basically it's a warning of 'I don't like you and that can quickly turn into the desire to kill you so watch your step' Hate: She'll greet them by trying to kill them, probably
Layla: Don't like: Suspicious behavior. She won't run or fight or do much run around, but she'll get flustered and mad, be suspicious of everything they say and do, and likely will try to leave their company as soon as possible. Hate: So far she's only hated one other person I can think of she she tried to go on a revenge scheme to kill him despite having no aptitude to do so...so I'm gonna say the response depends on why she hates them.
Greeting someone they like/love:
Rod: Like: He comes up with names for everyone and will use those when greeting someone he likes. He'll usually teleport somewhere nearby and 'pop' into their world, he'll play with them, he'll bug them, he'll be sarcastic and goofy and a bit of an ass. Basically he greets people he likes by being a sarcastic asshole and finding the best ways to playfully annoy them. Love: Hasn't happened much so I don't have a whole lot of info, but I imagine he greets the one(s) he loves with relief they're still alive and checking them over to make sure they're okay before they can actually say or do anything.
Kashi: Like: Almost indifference, lol. She'll greet them with a sort of 'oh, you're here' attitude. Love: Playfully. A bit of roughhousing might ensure upon greeting.
Layla: Like: Grins, smiles, small jokes. Maybe hugs, depends on how much she likes them. It'll be very light and jovial of a greeting. Love: Long hugs. Tight hugs. Genuine smiles, kind words. Probably laughter and maybe some kisses, in the very least ones on the cheek or something. Burying her face into them while hugging. Those kinds of things would be in how she'd greet someone she loves.
Thanks for the ask!

Douglas-Fir: What's something in your story that pretends to be something its not?
🌲Tree Ask Game🌳
Ooh this will be tricky to answer without spoilers! I’m going to go with the obvious choice and say the Forest of Eternity in ToL. The fact that everything about it is so pleasant is intentionally misleading. At the end of the upcoming chapter there will be a huge twist that will explain that a bit further!

Hi friend, happy worldbuilding wednesday. What is the political structure of your setting? If you have multiple structures, how is the relationship between them?
Tumblr media
Hi, @aquadestinyswriting! Thanks for sending this ask my way. If you aren't familiar with the amazing Aqua yet and/or you love the Titan Fighting Fantasy universe, I enthusiastically recommend checking out her Writeblr Masterpost for a complete overview of all her projects!
I've been going back and forth on this one for as long as I've been writing The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which is a long, long time, lol. Initially, I'd intended for the main characters to be senior royals within a monarchical society. However, I've recently discarded this idea and simply made them VIPs. The reasoning behind this change is that having Altaluna, the sorcerer's apprentice, fight for a position that ultimately upholds the status quo, and therefore, further perpetuates all the wrongs sustained by this system (which Altaluna has also suffered under), makes no sense for her as a character, makes me personally less likely to root for her, and weakens the underlying themes I'm trying to highlight within the novel itself. However, I still have a hereditary monarchy in the story, as this system perfectly encapsulates the idea that some people are born 'superior' to others and therefore have a 'divine right' to rule, conquer, exploit, and harass the rest of the world; an idea The Sorcerer's Apprentice aims to challenge.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday!
Now, here's a question I've been meaning to ask you ever since you brought up that our two favourite girls come from across the sea:
How prevalent is international, cross-ocean trade and movement in Mortal Sparks? Do any of its powers hold colonial territory abroad?
Happy almost-a-month-later-not-Wednesday Worldbuilding Wednesday! I get to everything eventually
It's pretty prevalent, depending on who you are I suppose. The higher classes and wealthier individuals, as well as sailors, are crossing oceans all the time. The working classes are more likely to stay where the jobs are, but plenty of people go from the Northern Continent to the Western Continent looking for better opportunities, and then just as many cross back over to the Northern Continents for the same reason. It very much is a globalized world.
As to your second question, much of the Western Continent is now independent, but was once colonies of various Northern and Southern Continent countries. Rougnier was first a colony of Ritania, then passed to the Royal Republic after a series of wars. Pratchin was first settled by Ifeltho colonists, but had a large influx from Kostha, Gresia, and the central continental countries when wars broke out. The various Republics of the DUR also have various legacies, which contributes to the lack of cohesion among that group. Ritanian, Espalan, Bresian, some Nusa (which Nicolette and her mother are descended from), its a grab bag. There are also groups Native to the Western Continent living throughout the various countries, with Angtar in particular being a nation founded and majority inhabited by a Confederacy of tribes in response to colonization.
In the current time, only Ritania and Espala still cling to old colonialist holdings, mostly in the form of treaties and control of certain port cities in the Western Continent.

‼️for the ask game! ^^
Hi Hippie, thanks so much for the ask. I'll answer this one for To Heal a Broken Soul more specifically for this one as this is a story that's gone through many, many drafts already
‼️"what has stayed consistent across all drafts?"
Quite a lot of this one has stayed consistent across all the drafts it's gone through, honestly. The overall story arc and the major beats within it have been the most consistent things though. I knew exactly what story I wanted to tell with this one from the very first draft as part of a much bigger Nano project in 2017. This also means that the themes have been very consistent since I split it off into its own thing a couple of years later.
The relationship dynamic has also remained remarkably consistent since the first draft. I admit to being surprised when I realised the story would work better if Edwin had caught feelings for Selene, and if those feelings were eventually reciprocated at some point during draft zero(the nano 2017 project). I ran with it, and I was so happy with the result that I carried on iterating on it through all the edits this story has gone through. As for Chrackle and Selene, that's been consistent since the original campaign. I already knew exactly what their relationship was about from the minute the two of them were created.

CAULDRON - Give me a fantasy food!
--@ceph-the-ghost-writer
hi Ceph! thanks for the ask (that i've let sit in my inbox for ages 😅). i'll answer for the world of The Art of Empty Space:
witch
the story of AES, i guess! i don't really tend to start with worldbuilding; most of the time, i have an idea for a story (or, more often, for a character or dynamic) and build the world around it. if the world i build for one story happens to work with another, great; more often, though, each story has its own world. so this particular world came from my spur-of-the-moment decision to write a "beauty and the beast" type story, which promptly spiraled out of control into something else (as tends to happen).
cauldron
seafood fritters are a specialty of the southern province, and Lienzo's favorite food. they're intended to be versatile, and can be made by mixing any type of seafood (although firmer seafoods tend to work better) into a thin batter (optionally with shredded vegetables to bulk it out) and frying on a griddle with any high-smoke-point oil. in Lienzo's hometown of Minadore, they're most often made with sea snails. this sea snail version is especially popular in midsummer, when the mooncrabs drift in for their mating season. the snails, having eaten bioluminescent crab eggs and larvae, will glow as well (and continue to do so for several hours after death). these fresh 'moon fritters' are commonly served on the summer solstice.
