May Fic Rec❤️
stuck in reverse by crazyassmurdererwall (smartalli) - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 65656, sterek)
Look, Derek is the worst. Everyone knows that. Their fearless leader is a total and complete failwolf.
Which means the rest of them? Are kind of the worst too. They’re a ramshackle, slap dashed, sorry excuse for a pack that’s about a half second away from getting one of them killed. And this is a problem, because Stiles would really like to survive high school. Thanks.
Still, nobody deserves what Derek has gone through. Nobody.
And it’s about time somebody told him that.
There Are No Wolves in California (Werewolves on the Other Hand...) byisthatbloodonhisshirt (wasterella), KioFox - (Rating: Mature, Words: 49010, sterek)
“I’m not calming down until you call animal control! I fucking saw it! There were fucking wolves!”
“There are no wolves in California, Mr. Daehler,” the principal said, sounding exasperated, like this was the third time she’d said it to him.
“Well clearly there are!” he shouted back, showing such a lack of respect for the woman, Stiles had to applaud her for her fortitude not to smack him in the face.
“Perhaps you were mistaken,” she said calmly.
“No I wasn’t fucking mistaken,” Matt insisted, sounding incensed. “No way these were dogs, they were massive!”
For a second, Stiles felt like the world had slowed considerably as those words wormed their way into his brain. Because—he knew a dog that was massive. Honestly, he’d also brushed away the idea of the dog being a wolf because there were no wolves in California.
But... what if there were?
Holy shit, had Stiles literally spent his lunch break with a fucking wolf cuddled into his side while he pet it?! Good God, he was lucky to still have all his limbs!
Go Away, Scott by HelloWhyTheFuckAmIHere - (Rating: Not Rated, Words: 66227, sterek)
After the incident at the warehouse, Stiles is fed up with Scott. He finds himself drawn into Derek’s pack and in the process, drawn to Derek himself.
With the Alpha Pack closing in, Derek needs to learn how to trust his pack and those around him. And who better to help him than Stiles?
Camaro '68 by ZainClaw - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 17709, sterek)
Derek huffs, arching one eyebrow. "I'm not a fugitive."  "You look like a fugitive," Stiles insists, practically beaming. "Maybe you should start wearing cardigans."
In which Stiles is a hitchhiker and Derek a runaway whose paths cross at a gas station in the California desert.
Wash the Rain by BarlowGirl - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 5659, sterek)
“Oh,” Stiles says, sharp and thin, more of a whimper than a word, his muscles going stiff and tight.
Derek starts to check on him, and his gaze gets caught halfway, where a dark, wet spot is spreading across the front of Stiles’ underwear. So fucking easy, his brain says, and he has to breathe for a moment, in and out.
“Oh my God.” Stiles’ voice is low, muffled. When Derek finally drags his eyes away from that wet spot, he has his arm across his eyes, hiding his face. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t,” Derek says, hiding a grin. “Don’t, it’s okay. You’ll last longer next time.”
Stiles moans.
OR: PORN
Where the Wild Things Went by banafofool - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 6974, sterek)
In the mass of cosmic chances, the universe had at least two things planned out. One, Claudia Stilinski and Talia Hale would be best friends. Two, their friendship would bring Derek Hale and Stiles Stilinski together.
Or at least this is what Stiles believes.
Words Whispered By Firelight by tigerlady (shetiger) - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 6698, sterek)
"We had our own stories, though. Werewolf stories."
Stiles takes an aimless couple steps forward, the curiosity in him a thing of kinetic energy. "Like what?"
Stiles wants to try something; Derek isn't so sure it's a good idea.
Daddy's Good Boy by DenaCeleste - (Rating: Explicit, Words: 3242, sterek)
Still haunted by the trauma of the Nogitsune’s possession, Stiles let’s slip some deep-seated needs that he’s never talked about before. Though he tries to hide, Derek won’t let him. Instead, he has to convince Stiles that he really can have what his heart desires.
I'll Always Take Care of You by adult_disneyprincess (orphan_account) - (Rating: Mature, Words: 2360, sterek)
Love You Most by LadySlytherin - (Rating: Mature, Words: 2974, sterek)
There are things Derek never expected to have. Things he’d resigned himself to the loss of. A proper pack, a mate, and children topped that list. He couldn't be happier that he’d been wrong.

And here it is, the long-awaited design sheet for Areyan/Arslan that... admittedly took much longer than it should have. But in my sincere defense, med school is a bitch.
We'll jump right into it, with his first outfit design. You'll notice that it's styled more after Shapur's attires in his design sheet that I've shared before, along with the third design. And that's intentional.
Arslan pretty much switches between the two styles— his father's (probably the regional fashion) and the clan's— with ease in his daily life, though he wears this sort of thing when the situation requires that he lean into an aspect of his identity that is “marzban Shapur's son, Isfan's brother” aka part of the ruling family of those lands. Especially so after the... ordeal that went down in Ecbatana, when Shapur is whisked away to Sindhura on a campaign to solve the issue of the threat looming from the east, Isfan has to step up into his elder brother's role while he's gone, and Arslan pretty much slots into a rough somewhat equivalent of Isfan's role in assisting his brother take care of the region. The colour of his coat reflects that, the same colour as the cloaks (and coats, as you shall see with Isfan's design sheet that I have yet to begin) that his father and brother wear, the family colour. It is my headcanon that purple is a household/family colour, and it's often worn as an outermost layer of garments when the wearer has to be out in public or receiving guests or stuff that requires them to be seen by people not part of the household, to signify where they belong.
The soft browns and earthy tones on the other hand, echo and complement Isfan specifically— as I associate him with autumnal earthy tones such as burnt orange and browns and such for reasons unknown to me outside of “they look good on him”— Arslan's pretty much imitating his brother to, again, pretty much be a signal that he's part of the ruling household of this particular region in Gorgan, specifically acting on behalf of the heir, the person currently taking care of it in the lord's absence.
Aside from that, though...
Let me just say that wolves are territorial.
Isfan isn't enthused about people from various factions (fake Crown Princes popping up like shrooms after rain) trying to either snatch Arslan or kill him.
That's his brother. Back the fuck off. He's ours.
That's basically what this thing is communicating, lol.
And of course, there are wolves on his coat! I'll leave the wolf stuff for Isfan's sheet instead, so that this thing doesn't get too long. I tried to evoke the feel of the moon too, albeit somewhat indirectly.
Though this outfit leans really heavily into one half of his family, that doesn't mean it neglects the other side either— it's just... a little more subtle.
For example, the silhouette of his coat, it's the same as the coat Ranna wears (just longer than hers), and one that Kashi loved to wear as well. And he wears a bird feather as an earring on one ear, and though his bird familiar/companion isn't a blue bird (it's a pigeon. yes, a pigeon. I'll get to it later) I gave him a blue feather anyways because hey, that's his colour! It echoes how Gieve wore an earring of an animal paw on one ear. That little dark orange ish line? Yeah, it's not very noticeable but I was thinking of both Isfan and Kazai when I chose the colour.
Next we move onto his second outfit, and this is one that swung the opposite direction on the pendulum, basically. He wears this sort of clan-styled stuff when he's acting in the capacity of a clan child, an apprentice healer.
First off, the blue layer, you'll have noticed that it's styled the same way as his uncle's, Kazai's. That's a clan style of garment, in a vibrant blue that I associate with Arslan. The embroidery details on that layer, I... kinda plucked it straight from Gieve's crest, lol. Two arrow-tails (for the archers in the family— grandma Eihon, Kazai with his crossbow, Farangis, Gieve), green for Farangis and a burnt orange for once again, Isfan, and a saffron/crocus flower in the middle.
I won't go into detail here because I have already gone over the saffron stuff here over in Ranna's sheet, but I will extract some relevant parts that I think could be repeated.
So a while ago, I had the idea of associating either Ranna or Arslan with saffron/saffron flowers— saffron is precious, and the flowers bloom in autumn. One would be associated with saffron, and the other would be associated with “autumn crocus/meadow saffron” which is actually not saffron at all and instead is poisonous, even.
Pretty neat plan, except I kept going back and forth on who would be which flower. Because on one hand Ranna is secret royalty and it'd make sense for her to be associated with the expensive and precious saffron, Arslan the fake saffron, but on the other hand I ended up linking venom/poison and Ranna (the scorpion, poisoned weaponry), and Arslan ended up embodying a lot of saffron symbolism...
So I decided, fuck it, imma just leave it ambiguous. Figure this shit out yourselves 😭 [...] The meadow saffron I talked about? Iirc it's a colchicum, not a true crocus.
This could work in a reference to the family purple I mentioned above:
“Purple, the traditional color of royalty, is tied to gracefulness, dignity, and personal success. It’s great for symbolize someone’s recent accomplishments or to celebrate their many years of service or partnership. Darker shades in particular have a strong association with the wisdom of experience.”
And while white crocuses aren't featured on his actual clothes, white is a design I associate with him in general:
“White, the purest and most versatile flower color of them all. A bouquet of Crocuses in this color can indicate a humble approach or wishes of condolences for someone in grief. This color is commonly associated with funerals in some cultures, but it’s also used for weddings due to its ties to purity and elegance in others.”
He's a person who's not all high and mighty, not prideful of his status, and instead someone who approaches people humbly and makes many friends as a result. He ends up causing his family quite a lot of grief even though he didn't intend it, firstly by being “stolen” by Shapur and leaving Kazai to frantically search for his lost nibling, and then by having so frail of a health that Isfan and Shapur were constantly afraid he was going to die in his first few years of life until the clan came into the picture, and then by almost dying in Ecbatana and remaining comatose afterwards in a tug-of-war against death.
He was also born on the day his birth parents died, making him a... funeral flower, of sorts. A small silver lining in the tragedy that occured, a small thing of comfort for Shapur left in the absence of the two friends he held dear. The same also applies for his uncle, Kazai.
On a less bleak note though, crocus flowers also represent something like hope:
“It is most commonly associated with spring, renewal, and rebirth due to its growth during the winter or early spring. Autumn blooming crocuses may inspire some artists and writers to use it as a symbol of hope in the face of loss or death instead. These varieties can be some of the last flowers to bloom, making them a reminder of the spring to come.”
Both the saffron flower and the poisonous meadow saffron bloom in autumn— he becomes somewhat of a symbol of resistance and hope for people after the stunt he pulled in Ecbatana, and he was born in autumn as well. (I've got Thoughts™ about the calendar but that's a topic for another day) The season associated with his uncle is also autumn, but the season associated with his adoptive father is spring, instead.
He wears a wolf-and-moon brooch with it, wolves are ever-present in his garments, both for his brother and his mother, Kashi. She had wolves for familiars, and he too has a wolf companion. Again, I'll leave a deep-dive for another day with Isfan's design sheet.
And then the outermost layer, it's a soft green, and it's what the clan healers wear— maybe not this exact shade of green, it would vary a bit, but it's in the same general neighborhood, as green is the colour of healing and growth, and it's a way to honor all the plants they use in their medicinal concoctions.
Here he wears another brooch, this time a chestnut-leaved oak leaf, the same leaves as on the sleeves.
I mostly picked that tree because of a geographical factor, those trees are found in that region, even though the actual symbolism is pulled from a more general oak.
“Quercus castaneifolia, the chestnut-leaved oak, is a species of oak in the turkey oak section Quercus sect. Cerris. It is native to the Caucasus and Alborz mountains of Iran, and resembles the closely related Turkey Oak in appearance.”
×
“A specimen of Quercus castaneifolia found in the Hyrcanian forest of northern Iran on 29. April 2021 by Alireza Naqinezhad is considered to be the tallest oak in the world.”
The second one doesn't really serve any purpose, I just thought it was cool. (Could it be a Heart Tree that the clan rituals and stuff are centered around? Maybe.)
Now onto the oak symbolism:
“The use of oak for food was paralleled by its use for other purposes. Acorns were used for food, but other parts of the tree were used for medicine, fuel, shelter, and art, as oaks became the ‘tree of life’ or the ‘frame of civilization’. For example, almost all prehistoric pile dwellings built along the shores of lakes during the Bronze Age were made of oak logs. Oaks clearly facilitated the establishment of human populations in Europe, and humans returned the favor, contributing to the considerable expansion of oak populations across the continent. Subsistence relationships led to values and virtues being associated with trees, which ultimately became symbols in societies, or to the association of sacred beings with trees in religions. The shared history of humans and oaks also generated cultural and emotional relationships that translated into symbols or were incorporated into religious beliefs and mythology. Oaks were associated with the most important gods (e.g. Zeus, Jupiter and Thor) in the mythology of ancient Greece, Rome and Germany, and were often used to represent the axis mundi, the center of the world, in Celtic and Germanic cultures. Since the earliest ties between humans and oaks, a very strong symbolic image of oaks has developed in which these trees have become associated with longevity, strength, stability, endurance, fertility, power, justice, and honesty.”
It's the tree of life aspect that I really want to lean into, and how it was used as medicine:
“Oak bark was also used for many medicinal practices due to its strong astringent properties. Drank in the form of a tea and it was known to treat diarrhoea and dysentery. Applied topically to the skin and it would treat inflamed wounds and skin disorders such as eczema.”
But they also resonate with the clan's values and such in particular as well, of shelter and cooperation and community. It's an old species of tree with lots of history, and well, the Marda is also an ancient people with loaded history. And their thing of taking in runaways and castaways is reminiscent of oak trees being an important shelter, both for humans and other species.
“Oak trees are an ecosystem within themselves, they provide food, shelter and life for many species of wildlife. The acorns from the oak tree are nutritious and have been previously been used to combat food shortages, whether that be for livestock or human consumption.”
Similar to how I chose Ayunnen to be seated under a hornbeam tree in this ficlet (the explanation can be seen in this post), the oak tree really does fit like a glove for the clan people, especially the healers under Eihon's tutelage.
It is not a coincidence that his tattoos are more visible in this attire, either! It is by design easier for the tattoos to be visible when he wears clan style clothing. And his sash, you might notice that it mimics Kazai's design #2— the style of the household staff, and purple, his family's colour, marking him as theirs the same way Kazai chose to be, though he tucked it into itself. He works closely with the household staff, and it's a subtle way of associating himself with them.
Moving onto his third outfit, this one is definitely the simplest, a soft yellow that kinda imitates the off-white yellow of the palace staff. It's not like he wouldn't wear it back at home, it's just that this kind of thing got kinda emphasized when he was regularly visiting the palace library to look at medicinal texts, and healing the palace staff and that sort of thing. It's probably not made of silk, can you imagine wearing silk in Ecbatana's hot weather? But yeah it's probably made of some material that'll keep him a bit cooler. It's in the same style as his father yet again, so that “none will doubt that you are my son” in Shapur's own words, he's wary about letting Arslan visit Ecbatana, a bit. Arslan can always throw on a coat in the family purple, I just chose to exclude it since I already included one in his first design. The pattern on it resembles water, since water is an element I heavily associate Arslan with, symbolizing wisdom, life and rebirth, nurturing, source of life, cleansing, soothing, depth, and healing.
There's the thing on his sleeve, the outer border of Isfan and Shapur's crests, left blank because Arslan has yet to receive a crest. He has not come of age, after all. And he's still wearing the oak leaf brooch even though there's no one that'd recognize it as an indication that he's a mage-healer of the Marda clan (it's better if people don't, anyways) because he takes pride in his family, his people, his healing.
I used a base without the scars and tattoos since I wanted to showcase that this was what he wore in Ecbatana before all that nonsense went down.
And then the fourth and final— the ceremonial spirit dancer dress. There's actually not that much to say that hasn't been covered already in Kazai's sheet, but here's the rest of the stuff I got.
There's a stylized wolf snowflake thing on each sleeve because of course there is, the three tassels on his necklace are his three elder siblings (Farangis, Isfan, and Gieve, in that order), the piece that they're attached to a green that made me think of the healers (I wish I'd chosen a brighter green, though) and above that, purple for... you know who it's for. Then there's the moon(s), and light lilac/purple beads. The white detailing on the blue part of his bodice— I was kinda thinking of Shapur's crest when designing it, though of course they don't resemble each other all that much. I don't know if you can see it, but the flower detailing on his earring also made me think of his father's crest. The pendant thing on his waist, I was trying to draw the stylized pine tree I did for Kazai's necklace, but somehow it came out... too round and lumpy to be a pine tree. Ah well, at least it looks like a tree.
Giving him a red sash for this felt... wrong. I tried, but it kept looking off no matter how many shades I tried, so I gave him a sash the same colour as the night-sky thing on Kazai's ceremonial dress. Dark as his eyes. Dark as the midnight sky. I was gonna add the star-snowflakes too but... I got tired, and hey this looks nice enough anyways.
And now... his tattoos.
Boy how long is this post already?
There's the two water waves on his collarbone region, two water waves that resemble wings. One of his nicknames here in this AU is “little bird” and he has a bird companion both here and in canon— though his AU bird companion is a pigeon. We'll get to that. The symbol between the two “wings” is the center part of his father's crest, with the “petals” removed.
On his left arm, several feathers floating on a wave of water, I've already explained why I chose water so I'll get onto the feathers.
So you see, the feathers started out as those of one particular bird that ended up... not working out. So just think of them as pigeon feathers now. Or owl feathers, to reference an old abandoned AU where he had an owl. But pigeon! I ended up picking pigeon because... they were domesticated animals, our companions for such a long stretch of history, and then they just... got abandoned and considered as pests when they were no longer useful to humans and that... that made me sad! So to make myself not-sad I decided to give him a pigeon! Siiiiigh.
Worry not, though. They aren't without symbolism either. I prepared.
“Pigeons are symbolic of fertility and prosperity, fortune, luck, and transformation. They’re said to be one of the first bird species to be domesticated by humans and have been friends to us since ancient times. These birds are also symbolic of persistence, harmony and well-being, mercy and forgiveness, and freedom.”
Fits Arslan pretty well, doesn't it? And he kinda ended up being some sort of good-luck bringer to Gorgan since his attachment to Shapur was what made the clan stay and they've been helping this place out with harvests and stuff ever since.
And the flowers on his torso... Well, it's gonna be a bit of a journey— I don't know which journey will be longer, this or the pine sapling on his right arm.
“The yarrow flower is associated with both healing and love. Yarrow flower meaning and symbolism in floral terminology relates to healing, and it comes from Greek legend. The genus name Achillea is derived from mythical Greek character Achilles, who reportedly carried it with his army to treat battle wounds. The specific epithet millefolium as well as the common names milfoil and thousand leaf come from the featherlike leaves which are minutely divided. Yarrow, also known as soldier’s wound wort, military plant, and knight’s milfoil, is a symbol of courage, specifically amid wartime. Wearing the blossoms is also supposed to bring safety and bravery. In addition to the fabled Achilles, battlefield medics in the American Civil War used mashed plants and flowers to treat gunshot wounds.”
×
“A. millefolium was used in traditional medicine, in part due to its astringent properties and the mild laxative effect of its leaves. Yarrow and its North American varieties were traditionally used by many Native American nations. The Navajo historically considered it a "life medicine" and chewed the plant for toothaches and used its infusions for earaches. The Miwok in California used the plant as an analgesic and head cold remedy. Native American nations used the plant for healing cuts and abrasions, relief from earaches and throat infections, as well as for an eyewash. Common yarrow was used by Plains indigenous peoples to reduce pain or fever and aid sleep. In the early 20th century, some Ojibwe people used a decoction of yarrow leaves on hot stones and inhaled it to treat headaches, or applied decoctions of the root onto skin for its stimulating effect. In the Middle Ages, yarrow was part of a herbal mixture known as gruit used in the flavoring of beer prior to the use of hops. The flowers and leaves are used in making some liquors.”
×
“There are many other Yarrow flowers meaning and symbolism references. Yarrow’s flower meaning was discovered in Neanderthal tombs where ancient ancestors consider them holy flowers. The Druids are also supposed to have used vine stems and limbs in their ceremonies to predict what will happen and the climate. Some people in medieval Europe use them to invite or expel malevolent entities. Dreaming of Yarrows signifies that somebody will receive positive news. Some yarrow-related practices, such as combusting dried herbs as fragrances in the expectation of flooding the house with joy and affection. Placing flowers in hot baths to obtain magic abilities are all still done today.”
×
“Other names implying its historical use in healing—particularly in the military—include bloodwort, knight's milfoil, staunchweed, and, from its use in the United States Civil War, soldier's woundwort. Its use in either starting or stopping nosebleeds led to the common name nosebleed.”
×
“Yarrow is best known for it's ability to stop bleeding and heal skin wounds. Historically, the leaves are chewed up and then used as a poultice on top of wounds to help stop bleeding.”
So as you can see, yarrow has a strong association with healing and medicine, particularly known for stopping bleeding. When Arslan was in Ecbatana, he consumed a lot of energizing pills— which had a safeguard built in that basically makes it necessary for the pill-taker to sleep off the extra energy they obtain, for example if one pill gave you an hour's worth of energy, the person needs to sleep for an hour when the effect wears off, so that the body wouldn't be pushed past its reasonable limits. Arslan, he... took a whole bunch of them without sleeping it off, and the “debt” kept piling up and up and up, and then he got captured and tortured by the Lusitanians, at which point his body went on an energy conservation mode aka a coma to keep him just barely alive. There wasn't enough energy for the body to heal itself, it needs energy for that, all bodies do, for the natural course of the body repairing itself. If it was too late, he wouldn't have made it but anyways, the fact that his body didn't have enough energy to heal itself, it meant that it couldn't stop bleeding for a long-ass time. It took a lot to prevent him from dying of blood loss. So the yarrow tattoo is... in a way, it's a charm, with the hope that he won't have to bleed so much again. Does it have magical properties? Probably, but to a limited extent.
As for the colours of the yarrow tattoos:
“Friendship, kindness, joy, festivity, and positivity are all represented by the yellow color of the blossom. These flowers can be sent to loved ones on special occasions to commemorate and preserve happy memories. The color white is a means of regeneration, calm, purity, new horizons, hope for the future, as well as clarity of thought. This hue expresses your belief in someone’s ability to begin a new chapter in their life.”
Onto his right arm, there's not much to say about the forearm part since I didn't have a specific plant in mind, only that those tattoos are meant to represent medicinal herbs since he's a healer and all.
And then we reach the upper arm where the pine sapling and the moon are.
The moon is culturally significant to the clan, as you may well know from my other posts and my conversations with @innerchorus in the comments/notes of said posts, and since this post is probably becoming a monster I'm not gonna unload all of that here. Maybe as a separate post, if y'all are interested and don't wanna go hunting for lore in corners.
The pine tree... The Moon Tree, the Heart Tree, born from a desperate attempt to revive a loved once, the Moon Tree is an iridescent white pine tree that is ever reaching towards the moon, so yeah pines are also culturally significant to the clan people.
Aside from that cultural association, they also symbolize:
“The evergreen pine is universally known as the symbol of life. During the long and icy winter season, the evergreen does not lose its leaves nor its lush dark green color. This tree has the unique ability to withstand harsh winds and up to subzero temperatures.
In Japanese culture, the pine tree is known to represent longevity, good fortune and steadfastness. It is commonly linked with virtue and long life, even immortality. The pine tree is iconic of the Japanese New Year, as a symbol of rebirth, renewal, and a bright (hopeful) future.
This is reinforced by this story about a certain pine tree:
“Since the bombing of Hiroshima, even more recently the 3.11 triple disaster, the long-standing meaning of the pine tree has been revivified and relevant once more. Recently the pine has been used as a symbol of hope, especially in of the 3.11 disaster. After the devastating earthquake and following tsunami, the town of Rikuzentakata was left in ruin. The tsunami had crushed everything in its path, leaving nothing behind but one solitary tree, one lone pine to stand alone amongst a desert of destruction. It had been strong enough to withstand the grave impact of the tsunamis force. The pine's resilience to the disaster quickly spread throughout Japan and the pine soon became known as The Miracle Pine. People gathered in numbers to simply glimpse at this miraculous tree. However due to severe water damage, the tree was dying. Touched by its strength, locals and citizens a like sought to preserve the tree as a national symbol. Like the roots of the painting above the The Miracle Pine had touched the lives of millions joining them together to preserve not just a tree, but a nation.”
×
“The roots of this sapling very much symbolize the willpower, support, and perseverance of the people. It brings meaning to their continuous fight of survival. However, even against unspeakable odds, faith is indestructible. With enough will power, anything can be revived. As the pine is very much a symbol of strength, it also acts as a reference for rebirth. Once the pinecones open, new seeds will spread. These seeds will then grow and repopulate the destructed landscape replacing of Rikuzentakata. Where life had been once destroyed, new life will flourish once more. Soon the destroyed pines will be replaced by the new, as old wounds heal with the patience of time.”
×
“It is also worth mentioning that the roots of the sapling extend outwards across the page. This not only expresses growth, but also symbolizes the saplings far reaching effects and influence. Its roots will grow and expand as the tree continues to sprout, burrowing itself deep within the soil to become one with the earth. The deeper the roots spread, the taller the tree will grow; the more support the roots provide, the more stable the sapling will become. In this context the audience connects the growing sapling to the importance of cultivating strong and lasting foundations. A strong foundation provides a promising future. The outreaching roots parallel to the branching pines on the sampling. They too are dense and large in number. As the roots dig down deep into the ground, the pines on the sapling stretch tall as if reaching for the sky. The sky is indeed the limit for this little sapling to grow. Before long, it will flourish into a strong and resilient great evergreen pine to sprout samplings of its own. The future for this little seedling is indeed hopeful.”
×
“The sapling above captures a symbolic reference to longevity and rebirth. The seedling itself is dainty and small but with time will grow into a strong and mighty evergreen pine, as all saplings do. This is exemplified by the thickly painted roots, which extend outwards towards the center of the painting. It has been strategically painted towards the center of the page to emphasize the strong foundation of a growing pine. The centralization of the roots catches the viewer's immediate attention additionally referencing to its vital (central) importance to the piece. Moreover, it emphasizes the importance of a foundation in terms of growth, even rebirth. Without its strong roots, strong upbringing, strong support, it would be unable to nourish and grow. The roots are what provide the sampling with the nutrients it needs to survive and flourish. They additionally take part in the stabilization of soil. Without its roots, the sapling would be unstable, weak, and fable. There can be no life, no hope, without a strong support system.”
I apologize for the lack of explanation and commentary, but I think these snippets I collected speak for themselves— I started typing this post at around 9pm and now it's midnight. What in the fresh fuck of hells.
The swirly stuff on his feet/legs— it's kinda both water and wind. Wind because... well, flexibility, swiftness, freedom, that sort of thing. He'll be a key player in the abolition of slavery in Pars in this AU even though he's not the Crown Prince or King.
My head hurts, my neck aches, my eyes are swimming, sorry for the abrupt ending without a proper after-word or something, but ah I'm so tired. Hopefully y'all enjoy this labor of love from me.

Oli and her company
Chapter One:How it all started
This story happened to a simple girl Oli. A pretty ordinary girl who has no friends. It's okay for her to be alone at all.When all the other children are having fun and playing, Oli prefers to sit alone in the classroom or at home to draw, make, listen to music or just do nothing. And so it would have continued all her life, if not for one miracle that changed Olino's ideas about the world.
One day, Oli was sitting at home as usual and drawing animals in her notebook. They were unusual animals. She first drew a beautiful fox in an elegant dress from the 20s and 30s from America, with white short gloves and with luxurious, long, brown hair. She still held a microphone in her hands and sang songs to the sounds of jazz and blues.
In the second drawing, the girl drew a rabbit and a wolf cub. The rabbit treated the wounds, scratches and bruises of the wolf, apparently someone offended the baby and even beat him badly. The little wolf had tears flowing in a small trickle, on top was the inscription "Even ferocious predators also need love."
Well, the third drawing of Oli draws a girl with a cat mask, she was dressed in a costume similar to Zorro, and in her hands she held a sword.
There was silence and a lonely emptiness in Olya's room, only the music in the headphones was playing in the headphones.
"Seven digits and a bell, how do I find your love, turutututu, how do I find your love" she sang.
It was raining heavily in June. The cold was so intense that even a cold stream of air could be heard in the house. Everything would have been fine, but then the intercom rang. Olya like a stremglam rushed to the intercom and took it off.
"Yes?"asked Olya.
"Olya, it's my" mother's voice came from the phone and Olya pressed the button, put the phone back in place.
A few minutes later, the parents came home with a large mirror
"Oh, what are you standing for!? Help me!" Oli's dad asked.
Olya was happy to help put a mirror in the hallway. And then there was a sound of something falling on the floor, turning around She saw a pendant with a purple stone. Picking up the pendant, the Girl asked Dad: "Dad, what is it?"
" Eh? It's a pendant, you can take it for yourself," Dad replied, chatting with mom.
Already in the evening before going to bed, Olya examined this pendant.
" Well, the pendant is like a pendant, nothing to do with lovomi", she put it on the table and went to bed.
The next day, Oli woke up alone in the house, a notification came on the phone that her parents had gone on business for three days, and Anya (the younger sister of the main character) went to camp. So she was left to enjoy loneliness and boring vacations again as always.
As soon as she became, she managed to do exercises, wash, change clothes, make herself breakfast, wash the dishes and clean up. After all the cases, she decided to lie down, but an unknown vibration in her chest stopped Olga. It was a pendant.
"What the?!"- Olya only had time to think, only turning to the mirror she realized what was the matter. That if it is how much further away from the mirror, then the vibration stops. And if it is too close, the vibration of the pendant will be strong.
Going to the old mirror, she began to hold her hand over it. The mirror had an unusual oval shape and its height was one big 50-year-old man. Its frame was carved from mahogany, and the patterns on the frame resembled various creatures, be it a dragon or a wolf. At the very top, the mirror was adorned like a kami tiara of the same color as the stone in the pendant. Then Olechka noticed the missing detail in the mirror - it's a pendant on the very top of the mirror. Removing it from her neck, the girl shoved it into the empty hole.
And then, Olya's mirror image disappeared and a portal to the other end appeared. Ole was reminded of the fairy tale Alice through the Looking Glass or the works of Neil Gaiman "Coraline", where everything was the same and even knew what happened to the main character and what difficulties she managed to overcome. Oli remembered this book very well, but the thirst to enter the unknown pulled her stronger and stronger.
I stepped into this corridor in the mirror, the girl kept going forward and forward.The corridor was neither too long nor too short, but so-so. But she managed to pass it and end up in a cave.
" what? And I went to this?"said Oli and looked back that the entrance in the mirror was gone. Oli was seriously scared, but when she saw the light, she immediately calmed down. She came out of the cave and saw a small town on the seashore, cute and clean.
And as soon as she took two steps, she abruptly and very quickly went down. She didn't even realize what had happened. And as soon as she was driving, something hit her with such force that she briefly blacked out.
And what will happen next, we will wait in the new chapter
Guys, I had to translate this with the help of a translator and don't swear at me, please 🥺

Okay this is just a small thing that you don't have to do, just an idea but like. What do you think their reactions would be to wolf hybrid!Child reader going Rabid on a skeleton that tried to hurt their dad.
I hope you enjoy! ♥
In Game, Reader is 10
Pairings:  Platonic! Parental! Tommy, Wilbur, Philza, Technoblade, Eret, and Dream x F! Child! Wolf Hybrid! Reader
Warnings: Fighting of Mobs
        TommyInnit
        Hyped
        Tommy loved bringing (Y/N) everywhere he went, much to everyone’s dismay her whole life.
        Their dismay lessened once (Y/N) was able to actually learn how to fight. With her added perks of being part wolf and her father being a decent fighter, she wasn’t half bad for only being ten.
        Today, the pair were out trying to get (Y/N) her first disc. Sure, she had her father’s she shared with him but she wanted her own, which made Tommy so proud of her. Together they struck out into the world and went searching for a few ruined temples and such.
        “We only got a few diamonds so far.” (Y/N) huffed, her ears flat on top of her head after they searched their third temple.
        “None of that now!” Tommy tried to cheer her up. “It took me ages to find my first disc. We’ll find one for you. And having a few diamonds isn’t too bad either! We can use them to try and scam a few items from people.”
        (Y/N)’s tail wagged at her father’s words. “Yeah! We’ll find one! And if you’re going to do more scams with Uncle Tubbo can I join?”
        “Of course! That’s the spirit!” He ruffled her hair between her ears as they went to find a new place to loot.
        Night was slowly creeping up on them when they found a new abandoned building.
        “Alright, it’s dark inside and it’s late. So, get your shield and sword ready.” Tommy told her.
        She nodded, taking her shield off her back as Tommy went in first, shield up and sword at the ready. Following in after him with her shield, her ears twitched as she listened. Tommy walked forward when (Y/N) heard the pulling off a bow. Before she could warn him, Tommy yelped as an arrow snagged his bandana and tore it as it went by.
         He whipped around to defend himself when (Y/N) snarled, launching herself into the skeleton.
        The monster was barely able to hold itself together and got no chance to respond to the attack as the child used her sword to cut off its head. Tommy stood in surprise as (Y/N)’s ears twitched and her tail straight as she growled tearing the rest of the bones apart.
        “Holy shit!” He exclaimed finally, (Y/N) jumping as she looked at him. “That was fucking awesome!”
        She knelt on the ground for a moment with a bone in her hand, watching him before grinning and her tail wagged quickly.
        “Really?”
        “Of course! My training for you has really worked!” He grinned as helped her up. “Let’s go own more shit!”
        “Yeah!” She bounced putting the bone in her hand in her bag to gnaw on later.
        Tommy had her listen first this time and together they took out any other mobs.
        In the end, Tubbo screamed as Tommy slammed his door open with (Y/N) on his shoulders, practically howling while holding a disc in celebration. It was just an average adventure.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Wilbur
        Worried but proud
        Oh look, Wilbur has another animal child, who would be surprised?
        After the war, L’Manberg had become a mostly peaceful nation. (Y/N) didn’t need to learn how to fight like her brother so he let her instead enjoy her other passions.
        It very much pleased Wilbur though that his little girl always still wanted to spend time with him. One of those days, the pair had been outside the walls. Wilbur had brought his guitar, strumming as he sang, while (Y/N) ran around to get her extra energy. The father hadn’t expected the storm clouds to roll in so fast but they did.
        The rain started to pour, (Y/N) screaming as she clung onto Wilbur as thunder boomed.
        “It’s alright little star.” He assured her as he quickly got up, putting his guitar on his back. “Let’s get back home.”
        She clung to his hand as they sprinted for the path and went for L’Manberg. He had carelessly not brought a weapon as he hadn’t expected to be out when monsters could come out. So, when a skeleton was in the path, he halted to a stop, looking for a quick escape before it noticed them.
        “This way—” Wilbur tugged (Y/N)’s hand but his eyes went wide as the arrow flew past his head. “Shit!”
        Before he knew it, (Y/N) had let go of his hand. He was too busy looking for a weapon to defend himself and his child when he noticed (Y/N) attacking the skeleton.
        “(Y/N)!” He yelped in panic as he rushed forward.
        Even without any experience, just pure instinct to protect her pack, she managed to take apart the skeleton. Wilbur pulled her from it, her big eyes looking at him with a bone in her mouth. She sat there for a moment before her eyes went wide, the bone dropping.
        “I’m sorry daddy!”
        Wilbur didn’t know what to say for a moment, the thunderclap breaking him from his thoughts as (Y/N) screamed, clinging onto him again. He took a new approach and scooped her up before sprinting instead for the Embassy. Tommy wasn’t in, so they were able to slip in. The man sighed with relief to be out of the rain, putting (Y/N) down.
        She shook the water out of her hair as she swished her tail to do the same. Wilbur took off his guitar, jacket, and hat, laying the objects on a chest as he ruffled his hair.
        “Alright, let’s get your jacket off and find something to dry off with,” Wilbur said, going for the back room.
        “I’m really sorry daddy.” She spoke before he stepped through.
        He stopped, remembering what happened. He looked back at her, her ears pointed back as she stared down at the ground with her hands behind her back and her wet tail on the floor. Coming over, he knelt in front of her, taking her shoulders, having her look at.
        “There’s nothing to be sorry about,” Wilbur told her, making one of her ears twitch. “You did good. I was extremely worried, yes. I was scared you would get hurt and I don’t want you to rush into danger again without a proper weapon, but I’m not angry or disappointed with you.”
        “I really did good?” She asked, her tail coming off the floor.
        “Yes, you did.” He smiled. “I’m proud you were able to think on your feet little star and protect us both. But, as I said, we’re not going to do that again without a weapon right?”
        “Yes sir, Mr. President.” She gave a giggle with a salute.
        He laughed as he kissed her forehead and ruffled her hair. “Now let’s get you dry.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Philza
        Would have taught her more control, proud
        (Y/N) laughed as Phil held her securely to him as they soared through the sky from the village they had just traded at.
        “You having fun darling?” He smiled at her.
        “Yes!” She cheered, her ears twitching madly in the wind. “This so much more fun than walking!”
        He laughed himself as he nodded. “It is. Like I said though, I can’t do this long, we’ll probably have to walk the rest of the way home.”
        “Aw ok.” She frowned but instead smiled and decided to enjoy the moment.
        Phil had promised the young girl when she was old enough, he’d start taking her one trading expeditions after he trained her up a bit. He did tend to stay out for long periods of time after all and usually saw mobs. It had come to that time and Phil personally trained her. As Phil had taught all three of his sons, teaching his fourth child was no work and (Y/N) picked it up quickly. He also helped her work on her wolf instincts just as he had with Techno with his piglin ones.
        Of course, it was precautional training. He wasn’t going to let her fight mobs so easily. There was little to no chance she’d have to fight anything; Phil was a master at avoiding mobs and taking them out with ease as he only had one life left to his name and had to be extra careful.
        As night was starting to set in, Phil landed as his wings took as much as they could.
        “Alright, stay close to me darling.” He told her as he took off his shield and sword as a precaution.
        She nodded, her ears perked up and listening carefully to help her father as she had her own gear out. Together, they walked through the snow towards their home, Phil ahead of (Y/N) as she was close to his back. As they were close to the edge of their property, (Y/N)’s right ear twitched at the sound of a bowstring in the distance. Quickly, she turned and held up a shield in front of her father’s back, an arrow giving a loud THUNK as it hit the wood.
        Phil jumped at the noise, whipping around just as (Y/N) dashed forward and used her sword to strike the skeleton with ease. He rushed over as the skeleton tried to recollect itself and gave a final blow to it.
        “Come on,” Phil told her as her tail swished and she growled lightly. “We’re almost home.”
        She followed Phil again and from there they got home safely. He sighed in relief as he laid down his weapons, (Y/N) laying hers down beside him. Looking at his daughter, he patted her head between her ears smiling.
        “Good job kiddo. You really had my back.”
        Her tail wagged eagerly as she smiled. “I learned from the best.”
        He laughed as he nodded. “Guess you did. We got to work on you not rushing in head first though ok?”
        “Ok.” She nodded with determination.
        “That’s my little angel.”
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Technoblade
        Proud
        (Y/N) was the daughter of the Blood God!
        The second she could hold a sword on her own, she wanted to learn everything she could just to be like her father. Techno was glad to teach her as he wanted to make sure if his enemies ever found her, she could defend himself and he did tend to exploit her wolf abilities in some dangerous places, so not having to watch her constantly was good too.
        Today was any other day. A bit of training between the two, trading a bit with a village, minor terrorism in the Dream SMP land.
        “So, what did we learn today?” Techno asked as he led her across the bridge in the Nether to the home portal.
        “Grandpa doesn’t let us have fun?” She questioned as she looked at him.
        Techno threw back his head in laughter at that. Phil had convinced Techno not to do a few of his crimes, much to the pair’s disappointment.
        “I was looking for more we keep better track of our invisibility, but grandpa not letting us have fun is true too.” He grinned.
        (Y/N) wagged her tail as Techno went through the portal first, (Y/N) a few seconds behind. He frowned at the night sky, taking his axe off his belt as he saw a few scattered mobs in the snow.
        “Guess we were in the Nether too long,” Techno said. “Stay close to me. We’re going to make a run for the house.”
        “Ok.” She nodded as she took off her sword just as a precaution.
        “Three, two, one, go!” He told her before the two of them sprinted across the snow.
        They had piqued the interest of a few zombies but they were much too fast for them. As they got close to the house, an arrow snagged itself into Techno’s cape. He stopped and went to turn with a full axe swing but didn’t get the chance as a snarl filled the air. Looking, he saw (Y/N) slashing through the skeleton with ease then tore it apart with her own hands.
        He was impressed but there were mobs around. So, grabbing her by the arm, he dragged her away, forcing her to run with him again as she growled still at the now-dead skeleton.
        “Come on killer.” He told her with a proud smirk.
        “It tried to hurt you.” She huffed as they finally slowed down on the porch.
        “Yes, but what do we say?” He looked at her.
        “Technoblade never dies!” She threw up her arms with a grin and he smiled as well as he ruffled her hair as he opened the door.
        “That’s right. You did well out there, little goddess, we need to work on your form though and that was a bit overkill.”
        She pouted. “Ok.”
        He chuckled patting her head. “But I’m proud of you regardless.”
        That made her smile again as Techno took off his cape to fix it. As he did the voices were chanting.
        Blood Child! Blood Child! Blood Child!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Eret
        Worried
        (Y/N), as a wolf hybrid, had an excessive amount of energy that Eret was just not able to keep up with sometimes. So, he’d let her go off on her own with Tommy, the two usually able to work both of their excessive energy out without any possible danger as Eret made Tommy promise him.
        It had been one of those days and Eret was waiting by the castle gate, worry starting to seep into him as the sun was starting to set.
        “Damn it, Tommy.” He muttered under his breath before going back inside the castle for a moment.
        Coming back out and starting to walk down the path, now he had a sword strapped to his belt as he made his way to Tommy’s. As he got to the fenced area, he heard the sounds of (Y/N)’s laughter as Tommy was yelling out profanities. Going in and to the door, he knocked on Tommy’s door. Swinging it open, Tommy stood there with a scowl on his face.
        “You’re both late,” Eret told him.
        “Shit, is it really that late?” Tommy’s eyes went wide at the setting light. “I got to meet up with Wilbur!”
        He went back inside as (Y/N) came over, seeing her father, a guilty look on her face seeing the fading light.
        “Sorry, dad.”
        “It’s alright sweetie. Let’s get home before it gets too dark. Stay safe Tommy!” He called as (Y/N) came to Eret’s side.
        The two walked down the Prime Path as the sun set full set.
        “You’re not mad?” (Y/N) asked.
        “No princess, I understand you were having fun. I was just worried and I knew I had to come to get you. Tommy’s a good fighter but I don’t think he could protect two people.” Eret explained calmly to her.
        “Well, I’m sorry I worried you.”
        “It’s alright, let’s just get home safe.” He smiled at her.
        The castle was just in sight, making Eret feel relief that they’d get there without seeing a single mob, but he jinxed himself. As they stepped out of the gate from the Community House, an arrow flew by his arm. He jumped in surprise, pulling his sword as he went to grab (Y/N) to pull her behind him, but only grabbed air.
        Looking around in a panic, he saw his little girl tackling the skeleton on instinct and starting to pull it apart with her hands.
        “Princess.” He said quickly as he went over and pulled her off the mob as she growled. “It’s alright. Calm down.”
        “It tried to hurt you!”
        “I understand sweetie, but you should have let me handle it alright?”
        She huffed but nodded. “Alright.”
        He helped her up and smiled as he ruffled her hair. “Thank you for being my knight instead princess but I promise I got it.”
        “Ok, dad.” She agreed as they went home to the castle without any more problems. “…can you teach me how to fight though?”
        “If you want to princess. We’ll figure it out.”
        “Thank you, dad.” She smiled.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Dream
         Proud but Worried
        “Got you!” (Y/N) howled as she tackled George, who in turn screamed.
        Dream laughed as he came over to them putting his wooden sword on George’s chest. They were playing a game of Manhunt and Dream had (Y/N) on his team naturally. With that, she was able to use her wolf senses to win with ease. Dream actually had to do very little but defend her. Sure, he trained her but there was a large training curve between her and everyone else.
        “We win again.” Dream told him.
        “This is no fair,” George whined. “(Y/N) can hear everything.”
        “You guys practically stomp around the forest.” (Y/N) grinned as she jumped up, her tail wagging rapidly.
        “Now don’t be too mean to your uncle.” Dream laughed, ruffling her hair.
        “I’m going to guess George lost too.” Sapnap came over to the group.
        “Dad and I are the best team!” (Y/N) threw up her hands, making Dream grin as he moved his mask from his face.
        “What told you? The scream?” Dream teased George now.
        George grabbed Dream, trying to tackle him but Dream managed to swing it back and pin George to the ground. The goggled man huffed at his second defeat as (Y/N) cheered.
        “Alright, let’s get home you two idiots.” Dream chuckled as he helped George up.
        The sun was close to setting and they were in the forest. The two other men agreed with Dream and everyone started walking.
        “Can we play again tomorrow?” (Y/N) asked Dream with eagerness, her tail still wagging.
        He laughed, nodding. “Sure. But why don’t you try and find me tomorrow with your uncles?”
        “But I like your team.” She pouted.
        “I’m honored sweetheart, but we have to make your uncles think they’re good too.” He whispered but loud enough for the others to hear.
        “Alright! You listen here Dream!” Sapnap stopped to argue with his friend, making Dream laughed.
        (Y/N) was giggling as the three were playfully arguing with each other but she frowned as her ear twitched hearing a sound in the forest. It sounded like…bones?
        Then she heard the bowstring and her eyes went wide.
        “Look out!” She shouted, startling everyone, giving them enough time to move as the arrow just flew past Dream’s face.
        “Holy shit!” Dream exclaimed in surprise.
        Before anyone could react, there was a snarl and the three saw the little girl tearing the skeleton apart.
        “Yo! You show it (Y/N)!” Sapnap cheered.
        “Shut up. Alright, sweetheart.” Dream came over, pulling her off. “You got it.”
        She huffed at the pile of bones before looking at her dad. “Are you ok daddy?”
        He smiled lightly as he nodded, patting her head as he crouched in front of her. “I’m fine, you warned me just in time.”
        “Good.” She grinned, her tail wagging.
        “But I don’t want you to do something like that again ok?” He looked at her seriously. “You got it, but you went way over of what you needed to.”
        She frowned, confused. “What do you mean?”
        “It was dead, but you kept going. That’s serious stuff. Sapnap was wrong to encourage you. I’m proud you got it, but you need to keep your control, ok?”
        She nodded slowly. “Ok. I think I understand.”
        He smiled again, kissing the top of her head. “Good. Now let’s get home before anything else catches us.”
        With that, the four went home, pride definitely in his chest but he would make sure his daughter understood her anger.
paris is always a good idea | a Jonerys Drabble
Thank you @youwerenevermine for my wonderful birthday gift, I love it so much and I love Paris so much and Jonerys and you for making this for me so I felt inspired and wrote a quick little drabble thing, lol. It’s only the fourth time I’ve written Jonerys in a modern, non-Westeros world, but it was fun!  And I wanna’ go back so much!  Paris, je t’aime!
They met while in university, oddly enough, as fate would have it, on her birthday.
She had been there to study art, for a year abroad, savoring every last second wandering the wide, arched hallways of the Louvre, staring at grand masters for hours on end, burning the vibrant colors and mesmerizing brushstrokes into her memory, wishing she could be as good as them one day.  One day, someone would have her art in their house, and proudly boast they'd gotten it back when she was but a nobody, painting on the streets or in the grassy parks.
Since it was her birthday, she decided to treat herself, and instead of heading straight to the university to get some time in the studio, she decided to get an ice cream at Berthillon, heading to the Ile-St-Louis instead of to the metro, taking her time to admire, as she often did, the glory of Notre Dame, it’s gargoyles and buttresses.
At the glacier she took her time selecting a flavor, did not even mind paying the exorbitant price and shouldered through tourists taking refuge from a cold rain that had begun to fall. She savored it, the clean water bouncing off her peat coat and the beanie she’d tugged over her silver hair.
She was about to set off, to eat her ice cream and wander into the Marais, perhaps drop down into the Latin Quarter— maybe take a trip to Chanel or Dior or Celine to admire the creations she couldn’t afford— when her ice cream went flying, straight onto the wet sidewalk. Where a mass of pidgins attacked it with gusto.
“Merde! Faites attention!” she shouted, stomping her Doc Marten on the ground in petulant annoyance.
The man who had bumped her because he’d been roughhousing with another friend had been apologetic.  He bought her another and said his name was Robb Stark. He was from Scotland, was on spring break with his buddies, which she didn’t care about. To apologize he invited her for a drink, especially when the worker who she’d told it was her birthday had commented on it again when she got another ice cream.
She figured why not?  He was attractive, sorry, and nice enough so she agreed, although she had commented his French was terrible best to speak English. “You’re English?” he had teased.
“Half and half,” she answered. English father, French mother.
At the comptoir where she suggested they meet, in Montmartre, she brought her roommate Missandei and Missandei’s boyfriend Grey. It was just a drink and they’d leave and go to the dinner Missandei planned to take her to anyway.
Except that’s where she met him.
The dark, brooding figure at the tiny table in the corner, ignoring Robb and Robb’s friend Theon, and a couple others, favoring silence and his drink. He was in all black, barely acknowledging her and slipped out for a smoke when Robb began to shamelessly flirt. She didn’t care about Robb, she cared about him.
Jon.
She exited, saw him lighting a cigarette against a lap post. She flicked her coat collar up and sidled towards him. “Puis-j’en avoir un?”
“Sorry I don’t speak,” he began, and his eyes— black in the orange lamplight glow— flicking to her. He smiled gently “French.”
She smiled and repeated her question in English.  “Can I have one?  A smoke  that is?”
He stuck the cigarette between his pouty, sinful lips, framed with a cropped dark beard, and reached into his coat pocket, removing a pack. She took one delicately and he lit it, cupping his hands around the tip so the wind didn’t blow it out.
A stream of smoke escaped her nostrils when she puffed and she smiled up at him, hoping he got the hint. “Do you like Paris?”
“Not especially.”
“Aw come on,” she teased. She hummed, closing her eyes and taking in the cold night. The electric buzz is people on the street and at the cafes and bars around them. “Paris is always a good idea.”
“Someone famous said that.”
“Audrey Hepburn.”
He sucked on the cigarette and smiled, a tiny one, the curve of his lip sly rather than shy.  “You aren’t in there with the rest of them.”
“Because it’s my birthday and I want to do what I want to do.”  She stubbed the cigarette out on the post and turned, disposing it in the bin by the door.  A quick text to Missandei: I’m going to skip dinner, I think I have a date, she turned and studied him.  “I’m…”
“Dany,” he said. He shrugged, finishing his smoke. “I remember.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I didn’t think you were listening when Robb introduced me.”
“I was.”  He pulled the tartan scarf around his neck tighter.  He glanced towards Sacré-Cœur, illuminated white in the lights around its base. He smirked at her.  “You going back in?”
She shook her head. “No,” she drawled. She followed his gaze to Sacré-Cœur. “Have you been up there?”
“No.”
“You should. Some of the best views of Paris.”
He chuckled, voice tight. “You should invite Robb.”
“I think he might be a third wheel.”
It took him a second, the gears in his mind turning, understanding what she was saying. He cocked his head. His black curls were in a mess around his face. A few scattered rain drops landed on them, and he shook it free like a dog. Or a wolf, she thought, noting the animal embroidered on the edge of his scarf.
He narrowed his eyes again. “I told you I don’t really like Paris.”
“Why?”
“It’s loud. Busy. Dirty.”
She laughed. “Every city is like that but in Paris it’s different.”
“Why?”
Her bravado got the better of her and she stepped towards him, linking her arm through his. If he didn’t get it now, he was a stupid fool who deserved it when she kicked him into the gutter. “Because,” she murmured, rising to her toes, trying to gaze as directly as she could into his eyes, which she now saw were actually gray. His breathing quickened. “You’re with me.”
The wolf got the point with that comment. He allowed her to keep her arm around his and lead him towards the cathedral.  They spoke of nothing and anything on the long walk through Montmartre to the highest point in the city.
He was in Paris for a research trip.  He was studying medieval weapons and was going out to Bayeux to study some relics. His cousin Robb and friends came along for the free trip.  They spoke about being starving artists in their field-- her literally an artist as it were.  They talked about Paris-- how much he disliked it, how much she adored it.  The top of Sacre-Coeur might have changed his mind, but he pretended he still didn’t get the appeal, so she dragged him back down to the streets, to her favorite all-night boulangerie, into the metro and across town to the Eiffel Tower, spinning in circles on the Champs du Mars.  They ran across the Pont-de-la-Concorde and across the Tullieries.  They wandered down the Seine, smoked cigarettes in the doorsteps of old buildings in the Latin Quarter, and drank cheap wine in one of the tourist-cafes near the Jardin du Luxembourg.
They meandered back through the streets, the city oddly quiet, the rain stopping, and she brought him to her garret studio in the Bastille, up the six flights of stairs to the top of the building, where she shed her coat and boots adn scratched her fat cat Drogon’s ears, leading him to the wrought-iron bars in one of the four windows she had, pushing the window open and crawling out, up onto the roof where she wanted to show him something.
“Look,” she directed, when he climbed up next to her-- less gracefully-- pointing to the lit-up Eiffel Tower.
He cursed under his breath.  “It’s gorgeous.”
“It’s my favorite place in Paris.  The rent is steep, but it’s worth it for this.”  She chuckled.  “And it has the best view.”
He whispered.  “Yes, it does.”
And to her surprise, since she didn’t realize the time, the tower began to twinkle, the 20,000 lights across its metal beams flickering and she glanced sideways; he wasn’t watching the tower, but her face.  She arched her brows.  “You know, the lights twinkle for five minutes every hour, on the hour.”  She smiled and shrugged, whispering.  “It’s a sign that you’re supposed to return to Paris.”
Instead of saying anything, like how silly that was, he leaned in and cupped her face in his wide palm, callused and warm, bringing her face to meet his, kissing gently, in the twinkly glow of the lights.  He pulled back a moment later, breathing, “I think I like Paris.  And you’er right...this place has the best view.”  His eyes were wide on hers, focused.  She chuckled, nodding in agreement, and pulled him back to her for another kiss.
That night she savored every moment with him, as they pulled each other’s clothes off slowly, kissing and touching, every smooth curve and muscle of each other, each hard ridge and plane of his strong, muscular body or her soft, lean one.  He touched her and kissed her and stroked her in ways she’d never experienced, bringing her to heights she’d only dreamed about.  It was intense, the lights behind her closed eyelids when she came, over and over, gripping his shoulders, hair, the bedframe behind her.  He rose up and over her, in and out, their bodies moving as one, thrusting and arching.
She didn’t know if she’d see him again; if this was a one-time, romantic Parisian adventure, but in the morning when she woke, she found him coming back inside from getting pastries and coffees, the faintest scent of cigarettes and her toothpaste on his lips when he kissed her good morning.
They exchanged their information, vowing to speak daily, and he would see her when he got back from Bayeux.  She couldn’t believe when he did call and he kept his word.  “When you lie, words lose their meaning,” he’d explained, obviously reading her surprise.
And when her year ended in Paris, she found herself in London, back at university, dreaming of their magical time there, even when they made time for each other, going back and forth from London to Edinburgh; and he from Edinburgh to Paris during the last couple of months of her year there.
They made it a priority; every single year they spent time in Paris, like they were students again, on that magical night.
They grew older, no longer needing to find the cheapest drinks and cigarettes, or staying in studio garrets, eventually able to experience some of the best hotels and restaurants the city had to offer, as he sold books and became a well-known author and professor, and her dream of becoming a famous artist came true, when sure enough, someone bought one of her paintings on the side of the Seine, someone who happened to be an art dealer in New York.
It was their city, where they met, and where they could remember.
After they married, about fifteen years after that fateful birthday, they visited again, and spun together on the Pont-Neuf, kissing and murmuring how they loved each other and always would, and he took her back to the tiny studio garret, which was now theirs, and sat on the rooftop and watched the Eiffel Tower sparkle.
“Paris is always a good idea,” she murmured, head in the crook of his neck, her back to his front, wrapped in a warm blanket, and his arms tight around her middle.  She tilted her face up to his, sated, and still hopelessly in love with him.  “Take me to Paris, Jon.”
He nuzzled his nose into her cheek, whispering.  “You are Paris, Dany.”
As it was the city where they’d met, fallen in love, and found true happiness, she grinned, because that was his way of saying how much he loved her.  She brushed her lips over his, sighing, “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
And they kissed, as the Eiffel Tower lit up, and she curled up into him, falling asleep in the city of love and lights.
You Know I'm No Good - six
sick days
Warning(s): Vomiting?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes you just have to rest. The world can wait.
Waking up the next morning, Tallulah felt as if she had been run over by a bus. Her head was heavy, the nausea she had been consumed with had yet to disappear, the light in her room seemed brighter than the sun and the sound of the rain sounded like rocks being pelted against her skull. Pulling herself out of bed was more exhausting than when she had to run the 12 minute mile in tenth grade, she thought to herself. Grabbing the comfiest clothes she could find, which consisted of a dark pair of leggings and a way too big hoodie, she put them on, only stopping once as she felt woozy. The world around her was spinning and before she could even think, her feet were moving. She ran to the bathroom, thankful it wasn’t occupied, before throwing up anything her petite body held from the day before. Too busy dry heaving as a wave of nausea refused to pass, Tallulah didn’t hear someone join her in the small bathroom, holding her long hair from falling forward and rubbing soothing circles around her back. By the feel of the small hand and the motherly gesture, she could tell it was Kira.
Tallulah sat back on her heels as hoped the worst was out of her system, minus the nagging in the pit of her stomach. Kira held her palm up to her forward and frowned, “You don’t have a fever.” she said, just as her dad came in holding a bottle of water, handing it down to his daughter, who used it to rinse her mouth before taking little sips, hoping to keep it down.
“Maybe it's stress,” he theorized. It wouldn’t have shocked her, but it felt like more than that. Like something wasn’t right and her body was trying to tell her.
The two adults helped the young girl back onto her feet, before moving her back into her room. Joseph tucked his eldest daughter into bed, something he hasn’t done since she was six. Kissing her on the forehead before leaving her room to let her sleep off whatever illness she was currently fighting.
Tallulah closed her eyes once her door was shut, but she could just hear Kira and her father on the other side of the door, ‘I told you this would happen’, she listened to Kira say, the audible sigh came from her dad but his next sentence was too hard to hear as she began to drift off to sleep.
Tallulah was surrounded by the tallest trees she had ever seen, looking upwards to the sky, she could barely see the blue skies peaking through the leaves. She was sitting with her back against a broken tree, her legs tucked underneath her. She felt calm. The most she had felt since arriving in LaPush. In front of her, there was the largest dark gray wolf she had ever seen, and sure, she hadn’t seen many in real life, but this one seemed to be unnaturally big. It stalked closer to her slowly, as if not to frighten her, but she wasn’t the slightest bit afraid of the furry animal. She reached her hand out slowly for the same reason as to not frighten the wolf, as it dipped its head forward, allowing her to touch its snout, and then forehead. She caressed the wolf, giving him small scratches behind both of his ears, a sound of delight leaving the wolf's mouth, almost human like. The gray wolf settled down, nestling its big head onto her lap as she continued to pet him, the two beings both closing their eyes in solace.
---
It was early afternoon when Tallulah awoke. The feeling of nausea seemingly had passed, only to be left with a dull ache in her chest. She picked up her phone to check the time only to be hit with a slew of text messages, from Lina to her mother, as well as Chase and August, with whom they exchanged numbers the day before during their second independent study class.Only one text message caught her off guard, it was from an unknown number. She clicked on it and read it over three times, barely comprehending it,
‘Hey, your dad told me you like to paint and I was wondering if you could do me a small favour?”
‘It’s Paul by the way.’
Tallulah furrowed her eyebrows trying to figure out a response, I haven’t painted since middle school, she thought to herself, while simultaneously wondering why her father was telling Paul this in the first place.
She typed out a response only to delete three times before settling on,
‘What kind of favour?’
Simple, yet assertive, she thought. Before clicking the sleep button on her phone, deciding she would read the rest of her messages later.
Slowly making her way out of bed and down to the kitchen, making sure the woozy spell she had in the morning was just a once off, she was met with Kira sitting at the kitchen table, typing away at her laptop. She cleared her throat so as not to scare her, before grabbing a glass from the cupboard and filling it with water.
“How are you feeling, sweetie?” Kira's voice filled the quiet room. After taking a small sip of water she turned to face her stepmom, “Better, probably was stress, like dad said.” Tallulah said, and Kira nodded in agreement. “Did you get Paul's message?” the older woman asked, a glint of hope evident in her eyes. “I did..” Tallulah spoke apprehensively, “I thought you guys didn't like him and now you're giving him my number and telling him I can help him out?” she asked, not in an aggressive way, more so curious. This brought out a laugh from Kira, “It’s not that we don’t like him, per se.” she chose her next words carefully, “It's just that, we’ve known him since he was a child and we just want to make sure you are careful and don’t get too caught up in his world. Plus his age doesn’t help..” she trailed. His world, Tallulah questioned herself, chalking it up to be what Lenna had been talking about at the cafe, him and Rachel's tumultuous relationship. She smirked at the age comment before slyly saying, “aren’t you six years younger than my dad?”She was only 7 years younger than Paul, and while she had absolutely no interest in him in that regard, there was definitely something interesting to her about him.
Kira nodded her head at her comment, “Yes. But I wasn’t 18 when I met your father. We both had life experience before meeting, it makes a world of a difference dear. But it is your life, and we want you to be safe, happy and healthy. Whatever gives you all of that, we will be supportive of. Within reason of course.”
Tallulah smiled, appreciative that Kira was treating her like an adult, not a child.
Letting Kira get back to her work, she heads out to the back porch, hoping some fresh air would do her some good. Settling on the porch swing, she checked her phone again as it buzzed, the same unknown number she now knew to be Pauls, had sent her message,
‘The Uley’s bookstore down by Third Beach got some water damage a few months back after a storm. I could use your help repainting some of the structures, nothing too intense.’
Tallulah thought it over. It would give her something to do, that her dad would actually allow her to do. The idea of spending time with Paul didn’t hurt either, if anything, it made her excited. She added him into her phone as a contact before replying,
‘I’m in.’
She sat in the porch swing, breathing in the fresh air and watching the treetops sway. It reminded her of her dream, the dark gray wolf filling her thoughts. The dull ache in her chest had been replaced with a fluttering feeling. The sound of a wolf howling through the windless air broke her train of thoughts, causing her to smile. Maybe the wolf was real.
Hunting the Beast
Paring: Ju Haknyeon (The Boyz) x reader
Genre: Beauty and Beast retelling/inspired; dark romance (does get a little suggestive at times), angsty end
Warnings: violence, old-fashioned thinking about mental health, as well as incorrect treatment of patients
Word Count: around 10k (I thought about splitting it into multiple parts but then I was like Nah; apparently it takes around 41 minutes to read this)
Synopsis: One fateful night you are not only attacked by a beast but also meet the mysterious Haknyeon. You are attracted to him, but his secret seems to stand in the way of your relationship. Will you two find your happily ever after?
A/N: I was inspired to write this, after reading Old as Time by Liz Braswell. It's a Beauty and Beast retelling. Not my favourite book, but still good. I bought this book because of the cover, lol. Would recommend it if you like fairytales. Another huge inspiration here was the game Cinderella Phenomenon (Dicesuki). I played the entire game with all the different story paths in one night, so be careful if you want to play it because it’s addicting.
It was the third day in a row that it was raining. Your father, however, did not seem to mind. He walked across the meadow near your cottage and piled up stones. You and your father lived near a village, which was far away from the rest of the world. Once upon a time you and your father were very close to the villagers but after that one particular night, you tried to avoid the village as much as possible.
You thought about how you would get your father inside. If he stays any longer outside, he would catch a cold. He was very fixated on his project. Unfortunately, his project didn’t seem to make any sense. He was just stacking stones and calls his invention that would save their lives one day.
“Papa!”, you yelled but he wasn’t even reacting to you.
Too much in his head for him to notice you. That did happen very often since that one night. You could still clearly remember it. It had been raining a lot just like now. Your father had gone to the next town to discuss some business and left you home alone. Clearly, you were old enough to stay home alone but you haven’t been prepared for what was to come that night when he came back.
Between the village and the next town was a dark forest. As a child, the elders would tell scary stories about this forest, how they were haunted and all kind of stories to keep the children from wandering away into the forest. Your father had travelled through these woods on regular basis, but on his way home that night something had gone terribly wrong.
What exactly had happened, you didn’t know and you weren’t even sure if your father knows it. The image of your father running out of the forest would haunt you forever. He was covered in blood and dirt and the fear was evident on his face. He collapsed right at your door. You pulled him inside and luckily, he only had some minor injuries.
But when he awoke the next morning, he didn’t remember anything. He didn’t even remember you at the beginning. It seemed like the horse wasn’t the only thing your father lost that night in the forest. Sometimes there are little silver linings, where his eyes begin to clear up but the only thing he then would say: "There is a beast, Y/N! In the forest. Promise me, my dear, never go into the forest.”
Overwhelmed by the situation you went to the village to consult the elders and the pastor, but this turned out to be a bad decision. Not a week later the pastor and mayor came by with a doctor who was a specialist for people with lost minds. But you couldn’t let your father go with him. You heard rumours about how badly they treated the patients there and that relatives were prohibited to visit. And after losing your mother at a very young age, you couldn’t lose your father too. So you assured the visitors that your father is no threat: You will take care of him and he will never bother any of the villagers.
But every time you wanted to go to the village and run errands your father would insist on accompanying you. The villagers didn't like that, they were afraid that his disease was contagious. Many vendors didn't let you buy their goods. You needed to find an alternative. You went hunting. In the forbidden woods, but your father didn’t need to know that. Every time your father was busy with stacking rocks, you sneaked in the forest to hunt something or collect berries, mushrooms or any herbs you needed. Before dawn and before your father got tired, you were back at the cottage. He never questioned where you got the dinner from. He just ate it while mumbling about his invention.
“Papa!”, you yelled again while stepping into the rain.
He only noticed you when you stood right next to him.
"Oh, dear! What is it?”
“Come inside, Papa. We don’t want you to get sick.”
“But my invention is not finished. We will need it very soon!”
“Tomorrow is another day. If you get sick, you will not be able to finish it on time as well.”
“Well, you’re right, my dear! Let’s go inside and have some tea!”
You sighed and the both of you, now fully drenched, went inside. After dinner, you spent your time reading a book while your father went to bed early. It was a romance novel and you wondered if your life would have been normal, would you have been married by now. The boys and men in the village didn't take a particular interest in you, and even though you knew that did not mean you were unattractive, you couldn't help but feel a little sad about it.
The next day the weather was significantly better, which was the perfect opportunity to go hunting. Unfortunately, your father got up very late which meant you had less time than usual for hunting. Nevertheless, you were confident that you could at least catch a hare, or maybe even a deer, for tonight's dinner. You snuck away and in the forest, you breathed deeply the humid forest air. Here, you could forget about your worries a little and have a little me time.
Unfortunately, the evening came sooner than you expected and it got dark in the forest. You still had nothing for dinner except for a few berries. That was not enough. You felt safe enough to walk to that one stream and then you would go back. You started to think of an excuse when your father asked where you have been. On the other hand, you doubted he would ask you that.
At the stream, you found many bushes with berries. You hurried to pick them up and made your way back to the cottage. It was getting darker and darker. Again and again, you tripped over branches or roots. The chirping of birds stopped and an eerie silence fell over the forest. Occasionally you heard the sound of branches cracking, and each time you had to convince yourself that it was just an animal in the undergrowth. It would be more afraid of you than you were of it.
Then you heard it: a howling. You never knew that wolves lived in the forest. You were not up to a confrontation with a pack of wolves, so you started to walk faster. But the howling got louder and louder. Not a minute later you saw blood-red eyes staring at you. The creature you faced was way too big for a wolf. It stood on his behind legs and breathed heavily. It had horrible claws and its teeth were bared. Escape or fight, you asked yourself as you reached for the knife you carried in your belt. Slowly, the smell of wet dog from the beast enveloped you.
Before you could react, the beast pounced on you. You couldn’t help the scream that erupted from you, as his canines sunk into your arm. You took your knife and ram into the direction of the beast. It let go and you got up as fast as you could and ran for your life. The beast was not distracted for too long and followed you. Not much later it had caught up with you and this time it bit you in the lower leg. Again, you screamed out as unbelievable pain flashed through you. You stabbed the beast with your knife but it seemed to be to no avail.
Then, you heard something thudding noises. The beast let go of you and ran away. For a few more seconds you lay there bleeding out on the forest floor. Father, you thought, he needs to eat something. The berries you had gathered were now squished. You didn't dare to move because the pain was too great and in your despair, you started to cry. You only noticed the footsteps when the boy was already bending over you and inspecting your wounds.
You looked at him in amazement. You had never seen him before. So he wasn't from the village and the town was too far away. You held your knife ready to stab him.
"Come on. You have to get up. Before it comes back.", he held out his hand to you.
You weighed your option. Unknown forest boy or beast? You decided to take the mysterious boy’s hand. He helped you to your feet and you both quickly realised that running was not an option for you.
"I'll carry you ok? I'll take you to a safe place," he asked.
Dazed by the pain of standing up, you nodded. He took your knife and before you could protest, he grabbed you and shouldered you. This triggered a new wave of pain and you remained silent. Instead, you concentrated on breathing the pain away.
He carried you effortlessly through the forest and you wondered if he could see anything at all. Unlike you, he moved much more elegantly and safely through the forest. After a while, he lowered you down. As you looked around, you found yourself in a ruin. He laid you down on a blanket and checked your wounds again.
After he had decided that you would not die any moment, he said: "I have to go now. Just stay here and try to sleep. I'll come back for you tomorrow!"
"Wait! Who are you anyway?"
"My name is Haknyeon!"
"And where are you going? You can't just leave me alone now!"
"Yes, I have to!"
"Are you going to get help?" you asked.
"Something like that!" he grumbled and disappeared into the darkness.
When he was gone, the panic set in. You were defenceless and injured in some ruin in the forest. You are going to die here. Your breath was going way too fast and only with difficulty did you manage to calm it down. Then exhaustion and tiredness came over you. You didn't really want to sleep. What if the beast returns? But sleep could no longer be stopped. You fervently hoped that your father would be all right.
You fell into a restless sleep. You dreamt of the beast and the red eyes and of the night your father came home covered in blood. Had he also been attacked by the beast? But he didn't have any bite marks. More like scratches and bruises.
Then you dreamt of Haknyeon, even though it was dark, you were sure he must have been a handsome young man. Or maybe it was the hopeless romantic in you because in the next moment he smiled at you and gave you a kiss on the cheek.
Only the background noises did not match the supposedly first beautiful dream of the night. You heard the howling and growling of animals. Was the beast nearby? But nothing could wake you from your beautiful dream when Haknyeon smiled at you like that and stroked your hair gently.
When you woke up a few hours later, the sun was up again. As long as you did not move, your pain was bearable. You looked around and tried to keep your body as still as possible. Haknyeon was nowhere to be seen. Just as you were about to try to get up and find your way home, you saw Haknyeon approaching you. He was all dirty and bloody. His clothes, however, were completely intact, unlike yours.
"Good morning!" he mumbled exhaustedly, grabbing a nearby bucket and turning to leave.
"Haknyeon!" you called, "what happened? Did you fight with the beast? Where are you going again?"
"I'm going to get water!" he said without turning around and then he was gone again.
This boy's got some nerve, you grumble to yourself, deciding he's not as great as in your dream. Nevertheless, you decided to wait a while longer to see if he comes back. After all, the chances of finding your way back with him were much better than alone. Last night you had completely lost your bearings. You could be anywhere.
In fact, Haknyeon came back a short time later with a full bucket of water. He seemed to have bathed himself because there was no trace of the dirt and blood. There was only a scratch on his forehead. He sat down next to you and gave you a drink.
"What is your name?" he asked.
"Y/N.", you answered.
"Do you live in the village?", he asked as he began to clean the wound on your arm. "
Yes, kind of. The cottage a bit further out."
He nodded as if he knew where you were talking about.
"And you? Where do you live? I've never seen you before!"
"Here!" he replied.
"Here?" you asked surprised.
He nodded and continued with your leg. The bite was much deeper than the one on your arm and also hurt a lot more when he cleaned it. You bit your lip and concentrated on not crying. After Haknyeon had finished cleaning your wounds, he tore some old sheets and wrapped them around both your injuries as bandages.
"Thank you!" you whispered.
He smiled at you and it was even more beautiful than in your dream.
"No problem," he replied and then gave you a handful of berries.
He had one himself and began to eat it contentedly. A little hesitantly you began to eat too.
"I have to go home again. My father must be worried already!”
He nodded: "Don't worry. I'll take you home in a minute!"
"How come you live here?" you asked again.
"It just happened that way. The people in the village are very averse to strangers or anything they don't know. That's why I decided to stay here. Free from responsibility and judgmental looks. I have everything I need here."
You look at him for a while and then ask further: "And the beast?"
"I've learned to deal with it," he answered quickly, "Let's go. Before we end up in the same situation as yesterday."
He helped you stand up and unfortunately walking was still not the best option. He picked you up and walked with you through the forest. Haknyeon smelled just like the forest, earthy and fresh and you quickly found that you liked the smell very much. On the way, you told him about your father and what happened to him. When you told him what the villagers wanted to do with him, he snorted contemptuously.
"It's so typical that they want to lock up a harmless old man right away."
Your arms tighten around him, as he wobbled down a hill.
“Don’t worry. I got you!”, he reassured you and held onto you a little tighter.
The forest slowly began to look familiar again and as soon as you emerged out of the forest, you could see the cottage. Your father was in the meadow, stacking his stones.
“Is that your father?”, asked Haknyeon.
“Yes…”, you answered.
Your father didn’t notice you coming, too focussed on his task.
“Should I take you inside or to your father?”, Haknyeon asked.
“To my father, please!”
He hesitated for a short second, but then he walked towards your father.
“Papa!”, you yelled and surprisingly he reacted.
He looked up to you and for a short moment, he had his clear eyes back.
“Y-you?”, he stammered.
“Papa! It’s me, Y/N!”
Haknyeon let you down into the soft grass of the meadow.
“I know, my dear. I remember!”
He looked at Haknyeon and studied him. He looked back at you.
“The Beast, my dear. Don’t go into the forest.”
“I know, Papa. I’m sorry. But Haknyeon saved me from the Beast!”
He looked confused at Haknyeon: “No, but-“
“I’m Haknyeon, Monsieur.”, Haknyeon interrupted him and hold out his hand for him.
Your father eyes clouded over again and he took Haknyeon’s hand and shook it.
"Are you interested in investing in my latest invention? Come on, young boy, I show you what it can do!” your father said and dragged him to the pile of stones.
You observed how your father talked, probably nonsense you guessed. Haknyeon patiently listened to him. You lay in the high grass of the meadow, unable to probably move due to your injuries and enjoyed the sun. Something was comforting about it after the many days of rain and the last night of terror. You fell into a dreamless sleep and when you woke up, you laid in your bed.
When you turned around, you could see how Haknyeon served your father a soup while he still listened to his ramble about his inventions. As he saw you were awake, he gave you smile and served your bowl of soup as well and came to your bed.
“Slept well? Here!”
“Yes, thank you!” you mumbled as you sat up.
Haknyeon sat next to you and was ready to feed you.
“I can feed myself!”, you grumbled and took the bowl and spoon away from him.
You instantly regretted it, as pain shot through your arm. You ignored the pain and began to eat. To your surprise, the soup tasted heavenly. Haknyeon observed you with mischievous eyes.
“It’s good, isn’t it?”, he said confidently.
You nodded and he grinned.
“Perfect. I will head home now. I will check by soon again and bring new food.”
“You can stay here. I’m sure my father wouldn’t mind.”
He shook his head and gave your sad smile:
“I appreciate the offer, but I can’t. I’ll see you soon. Get well soon!”
With that, he stood up and left without another word.
“What a strange guy!” you said to your father who hummed and you took it as he agreed to you.
That night you stayed awake because you couldn’t stop thinking about the moment when you laid there helpless on the ground of the forest. You read a lot about the damsel in distress and you absolutely hated that trope. Now you are one yourself, you scoffed and turned around in your bed. You tried to minimize the pain, but that turned out to be rather difficult. You will never let this happen to you again, you decided. Next time you will see the beast, the roles will be reversed. You will be the one attacking and the beast cowering in fear. With this thought, you fell asleep.
The next morning, your father attempted to make breakfast, it didn’t go that well so you two ate the left-over from Haknyeon’s soup. The pain was much more bearable today and your wounds seemed to start to heal. Short before dawn, Haknyeon came with some food and a balm for your wounds. He didn’t stay long and your father claimed most of his attention. Then he disappeared for three days.
When he came to visit again, you were able to move quite okay. You cooked something from the food he brought as a thank you and you never saw someone eat your food so enthusiastically. It made you smile like an idiot the whole dinner and you secretly hated yourself. Why are you so whipped for a strange boy who you know nothing about?
Soon after dark, Haknyeon wanted to go again and you accompanied him to the edge of the forest. When you arrived, you both stood there awkwardly.
“Why won’t you stay here? It is safer here!”
“For me, the forest is safe as well!” he countered.
You sighed. Why did you even try?
He chuckled: “You like me that much?”
You felt the heat creep up your neck and your cheeks and hoped he won’t notice it.
You scoffed: “No. I just don’t want the beast to kill you.”
“It won’t!” he said still grinning.
“Yes, maybe you right. Because before it can kill you, I will kill it!” you announced confidently.
For a moment you saw shock and surprise on his face, but then he laughed.
“Idiot!” you grumbled and turned around to go back to the cottage.
“Wait!” Haknyeon yelled and followed you.
Soon he reached you and grabbed your arm: "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to laugh at you. It's just…"
“You think I can’t do it. I get it. Now go.”
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
“The beast is very strong. It will kill you before you can even attack it. I think no one can kill it.” he said.
"Well, we will see," you said still a little angry.
You had to admit, you didn’t come up with a good plan yet. But there is still time and you will prepare accordingly.
“Please, think about it again. I don’t think it is a good idea.”
“What if we do together?” you asked suddenly excited.
He seemed to know a lot about the beast and the forest. If you both trained a bit together, you would definitely stand a chance.
"I can't.", he said with a sad smile.
You scoffed: “Why not?”
“I can’t tell you.”
You stare at him perplexed. Why did he have to be so mysterious? What couldn’t he tell you?
“I’m starting to think you want to protect that beast.”
“No, that’s not it.”
"You know what? Forget about it. Go to your oh-so-comfy ruin and cuddle with your beast.” you said and ripped your arm out of his hold.
You had enough of his mysterious shit and turned around to go to the cottage. This time he didn’t follow you and you didn’t turn around to see if he was still standing there.
The next morning you were still filled with anger. After breakfast, you went to the village to visit Gaston. He was the best hunter you knew and an old childhood friend of yours. He became popular as you were teens so he stopped hanging out with you. You were now sitting in his kitchen while his mother served you tea.
“So? You want to learn how to hunt?”
“Yes!, you said.
He didn’t seem to be opposed to the idea.
“May I ask why?”
"It is kind of a long story. But in the forest, there is some animal I want to see dead!"
He raised an eyebrow: “Okay? You want to hunt a predator, I assume.”
You nodded again: “Yes, can you teach me?”
He seemed to think about it for a while: “Yeah, sure. Why not?”
“Really? Oh, thank you!” you said excitedly and hugged him.
He seemed surprised but he reciprocated the hug nevertheless.
“Okay. When do we start?”
“Tomorrow?”
“Sounds great! Where?”
“You have that large meadow near your cottage. That should be a good place to start. I will come by after breakfast.”
“Thank you so much!” you exclaimed.
On your way home, you couldn’t help but skip like a little school girl. You hoped to make fast progress. Maybe Haknyeon will change his mind when he sees how capable you are.
The next two days were the most exhausting you ever had. Gaston didn't go easy on you and taught you many different techniques with different weapons. You were surprised how good you and Gaston got along. It was just like back in the old days. In your breaks, you would lay in the meadow staring up the sky and watching the clouds.
On day three of your training, you saw Haknyeon. He stood at the edge of the forest and watched you two with a dark and unreadable expression on his face. You sent Gaston home and went to him.
“What are you doing here?” you confronted him.
“Just checking by. What are you up to with that hunter?”
“You know Gaston?”
“I’ve seen him hunting in the forest.”
That made sense, you thought.
“So? Is he your boyfriend?” Haknyeon asked.
You couldn’t help but smile. “That’s none of your business.”
Haknyeon scoffed: “Is he trying to teach you hunting?”
You nodded.
“You know he’s not that good!” Haknyeon said.
“Is that so? He is the best hunter, I know!" you countered.
“Well, I hate to break it to you, but I’m better”
You chuckled. He might be right, you thought, but he won’t teach you.
“It doesn’t really matter!” you said.
“Why? So he is your boyfriend?” Haknyeon asked again.
You sighed. Why was he so obsessed with Gaston being your boyfriend?
“No. But I need someone to teach me how to hunt!”
“I can do that!” Haknyeon exclaimed.
You raised an eyebrow. What made him change his mind?
You decided not to question it, so you said: “Okay. Then teach me!”
He grabbed your hand and pulled you into the forest.
“First of all, just because you can do it meadow doesn’t mean it will work in the forest as well.”
So your training with Haknyeon began. It was very different from Gaston's. Instead of theory and technique, Haknyeon concentrated on using the forest to your advantage. He showed you how you could outsmart the beast and its instinct. He knew a lot about the beast, just like you had guessed.
But Haknyeon only came by every third day, so you kept training with Gaston. One day Haknyeon came at a day, he usually didn't. He saw you and Gaston laying in the meadow and laughing. You only saw him as he disappeared into the forest again. You really hoped he wasn't hurt by you still training with Gaston. This night you could barely sleep.
But the next day, when Haknyeon came to visit you, he wasn’t mad at all. He even brought you a rose. It looked ethereal.
"I didn't know roses grow in the forest!”, you said as you put it in a vase.
Haknyeon laughed nervously: “Yes, I found this one rather by accident too. I hope you like it.”
“It's beautiful! Thank you.”
“It reminded me of you," he said and you couldn't help but blush.
You stared intently at the rose. Carefully, Haknyeon stroked your cheek.
"You are both so beautiful. I'm afraid you'll fall apart every time I touch you."
The blood rushed in your ears and when you looked at Haknyeon you thought you were sinking into his beautiful brown eyes. He took a step closer to you and you could smell his scent: earthy and fresh. His hands cupped your face as he looked at you intensely. As if he wanted to imprint the sight of you forever.
He pulled you even closer and your chest touched his. Your body tingled with excitement. Your gaze briefly wandered from his eyes to his lips. When you looked into his eyes again, he had come much closer to you. You felt his breath on your lips and you closed your eyes. But your lips never touched because Haknyeon suddenly pushed you away.
"Sorry!" he mumbled sheepishly.
You just nodded, unable to process this situation.
"We should start training!" he said and walked towards the forest.
However, you couldn't concentrate on the training at all. Every little touch from Haknyeon brought you right back to the situation before. You wondered all the time what it would have been like if he had actually kissed you. Haknyeon was not much different. He just stared at you and didn't complain when you did something obviously wrong. When you both took a break, you both fell silent. Just when you could no longer stand the silence, Haknyeon took your hands and pulled you towards him so that you were pressed against his chest.
"Tell me when to stop," he murmured as he placed one hand on the back of your neck and the other on your waist.
You looked at him wide-eyed. He smiled softly at you as he pulled you impossibly closer. You smiled back at him.
“Why are you so beautiful?” he whispered against your lips.
His nose gently touched yours and you closed your eyes again. You hoped he wouldn't push you away again. He didn't. Instead, you felt his lips on yours.
The kiss started out hesitantly and very soft. But once Haknyeon realised you wanted this as much as him, the kiss got more intense. His hand on your neck pulled your more into the kiss. You couldn't help the little whine that left your lips when Haknyeon lips pulled away from you. Your lips chased his and with a deep chuckle, he gave in and kissed you again.
He slowly moved you backwards while kissing you and then he pressed your back against a tree. You moaned into the kiss and Haknyeon tongue slipped into your mouth. Your body felt hot and tingly as Haknyeon pressed his hips into yours. You pulled away since you really needed to breathe. He on the other hand didn't want to stop so he kissed down your neck. At a very sensitive spot, he stayed a little longer and slightly bit your skin. You whined and your hand went into his hair. You pulled it, so his lips will connect again with yours. Haknyeon obeyed and kissed you again with a lot of passion. Your hand that wasn’t in his hair roamed his chest and abdomen, which made him release a moan into the kiss. His moan excited you more than you expected and you pulled his hips closer to yours as wrapped a leg around his hips. His hand immediately started caressing your thigh.
You were so into kissing him that you almost didn’t hear the howl. It was unusual. Normally the howling could only be heard at night. Haknyeon heard it too and immediately he pulled away from you, but still kept you close. He swore under his breath and pulled you to the direction of your cottage.
“Why is it awake now? I thought it was nocturnal?” you whispered.
“I don’t know!” Haknyeon whispered back and constantly checked your surroundings.
You believed him. Something in you told, he being honest with you. The beast didn’t howl a second time and you made it safely to your cottage.
“Haknyeon?” you said as you took his hands and pulled him closer to you.
Almost naturally, his lips found your temple and he placed a kiss there.
“Yes, my love?” he said as he smiled at you.
You already hated yourself for what you were about to do.
“Please don’t get mad at me. But I really want you to stay here with me. It worries me, that you’re out there alone with the beast.”
“I’m fine. Don’t worry, ok?”
“You say that every time. I don’t understand that. Please explain it to me. Why is it so bad to stay here with me? You’re not a burden if you think that. I like you and I think you know that.”
He sighed: “I like you too. I really do. And that is one of the reasons I can't stay here… Wait no, that sounded kind of wrong. You're not the reason why I don't want to stay with you. I'm the problem, ok?"
"Haknyeon, you're not a problem," you said as you took his face into your hands to make him look at you.
You saw how sad his eyes looked and how emotional he got over it.
“Stay with me.”, you whispered as your felt your eyes water, “You’re not a problem, ok?”
He hesitated, but then he nodded. Later that night, you thought you should have made him promised to stay the whole night. You hadn't been asleep for very long, but you woke up from the sound of the door being closed. You looked around and found that the spot on the floor, where Haknyeon insisted he would sleep on, was empty. You cursed as you looked out of the window and saw a figure hurrying into the forest.
You locked the door from the inside. He shouldn’t come back in the morning and pretend he stayed here all night. He wasn’t fooling anybody here. Angrily, you went back to bed. The next morning, Haknyeon wasn't there and didn't appear for the next two days. But Gaston was there and he showed a lot of interest in the rose Haknyeon has gifted you. He was very curious about who gave you this rose. You only answered him it's from a boy, but more you didn't give out more information. You were still angry at Haknyeon, but you still wanted him to be your secret.
You regretted telling Gaston not more about Haknyeon when Gaston came with a massive bouquet of roses. You were actually waiting for Haknyeon. Today it was his turn to train you and you hoped he would actually appear and you could talk about what has happened. But instead of Haknyeon, Gaston appeared with his massive bouquet. A little confused you took his gift and let him in.
“Y/N! There is something very important I need to ask you.”
“What is it?” you asked as you turned around.
Gaston was kneeling one knee before you and took your hand: “Do you want to marry me?”
You were speechless.
“G-Gaston…” you stammered, "I didn't even know you liked me that way!"
“Well, you’re pretty and I’m quite handsome myself. It only makes sense if we marry. Everyone in the village is already wondering.”
“B-But…” you stammered, your gaze fell onto Haknyeon’s rose.
Gaston followed your gaze.
“This boy is nothing. I can give you everything you want and need. I got you dozen of roses.”
"Still, I don't think I can marry you," you answered.
You liked Gaston, yeah but as a friend. You don’t think he could erupt the same feelings you felt with Haknyeon that afternoon in the forest.
Speaking of the devil, there was a knock at the door and you heard Haknyeon calling your name.
Gaston raised an eyebrow: “Is that your boy?”
You didn’t answer and Gaston stood up.
“I won’t give you up. You’re destined to marry me.”, he said to you.
As Haknyeon knocked again, Gaston ripped open the door and immediately grabbed him by his neck. You couldn’t help but embarrassingly squeak Haknyeons name. His eyes instantly found yours and he gave your sad smile. In his eyes, you saw how sorry he was and knew that he had angered and disappointed you. Gaston pushed him onto the grass and punched him full force in the stomach.
"Hands off my girl!"
"Stop it!" you shouted as you followed them. No one listened to you.
Haknyeon scrambled to his feet and unceremoniously punched Gaston in the jaw.
"I don't think she's YOUR girl. Who do you think you are? Walk-in on her with a bouquet of flowers and think you've been courting her?"
Gaston muttered something unintelligible and lunged at Haknyeon. Haknyeon deftly dodged and pushed Gaston to the ground.
"Get out of here," Haknyeon growled to Gaston.
Your father had witnessed the tumult and was now at your side.
"What's going on here?" he asked, and you didn't quite know how to explain to him that you had just been proposed to by the village beau, had turned him down, and now Gaston and Haknyeon were fighting.
It was like something out of a cheesy novel. Your father didn't seem to expect an answer and approached the two. They both stopped fighting and your father told them both that it was not right to run around on his property and that they should get lost. A little perplexed, they both stared at your father but agreed. Gaston went towards the village while Haknyeon went to the forest.
When Haknyeon reached the forest, he turned to you again. Your heart ached and you couldn't explain why you wanted to run to him when you were so angry with him.
Your father came to you again and said: "Those tramps. They must have wanted to steal my invention!”
You couldn't help but smile at that.
"How about a cup of tea and a piece of cake, my dear?" your father asked.
You agreed and turned your back on Haknyeon, who was still staring at you.
Later, when you were about to start cooking dinner, it knocked again. You sighed hoping it wasn’t Gaston again. You opened the door and Haknyeon stood there.
Before you could say anything or even let him in, he said: “Hey, I know you probably don’t want to see me, but I really need to apologize.”
You open the door a bit wider to let him in and went to the stove to make some tea. Haknyeon closed the door behind him and sat down at the kitchen table.
"I'm really sorry, Y/N!" Haknyeon started, "I shouldn't have said these things to your potential suitor and shouldn't punch him. I'm sure he is a nice guy. I'm sorry I ruined his proposal. You're going to marry anyway, right?"
Astonished, you turned around. "What makes you think I want to marry him? Actually, his proposal took me completely by surprise."
Haknyeon smiled sheepishly: "I can understand him very well on that point. Who wouldn't want to marry you?"
You felt your cheek flush and tried to concentrate on pouring the tea.
"I don't want to marry him and I won't!" you said quietly as you put the tea down in front of Haknyeon.
When you looked up, Haknyeon was already looking at you and his look was somehow hopeful. But there was more. But before you could lose yourself in his eyes, you turned away again.
"I'm still mad at you though. Not because you ruined the proposal."
"Look, I know, I shouldn't have left that night. But I can't stay here."
You started to get very annoyed: "Why not? Just tell me!"
"I can't!" he replied.
"Then leave and don't come back until you can."
Haknyeon was silent for a moment but then stood up.
Just as you were beginning to regret your words, he said, "Please don't try to kill the beast, ok? It will kill you first!"
"Go!" you replied coldly.
With a sigh, he left into the rain again. As you watched him go, you decided the beast will die soon.
The next days you prepared everything for your beast hunt. Gaston showed up one day to ask again if you want to marry him. You dismiss him with a simple no and after a while, he left. Haknyeon didn't show up, but you secretly wished he would. Your heart seemed to long for him. Your dreams were filled with him and every time you thought about him, your heart ached. Is that what love feels like?
You also prepare everything in case you won't survive the night. Someone needed to take care of your father. You talked to an old lady in the village and she agreed to look after him in two days. Her husband was a soldier and when he came back he had also lost his mind. He was now in the asylum and his wife was forbidden to visit him. She understood that you couldn’t let your father go there.
As the night of the beast hunt came, you felt a tiny bit nervous. It was raining, which means finding the traces of the beast would be hard. Also was there a higher risk of slipping. But you went anyways. Not much later, the howling of the beast started. It must have been near you. You started walking in the direction of the howling. You needed to find the beast before it found you, so you hurried through the forest.
The training had made you more agile and now you practically flew through the forest. The next howl was very far away and came from a completely different direction. You changed your direction and a little bit later you found your first traces of the beast. You followed those, but you never came close to the howling.
You were confused. Where is this beast? It is a predator. They don’t hide.
You kept following the traces which ended in the ruins where Haknyeon lived. And then you saw it. His deformed body was on top of one of the ruins. His red gleaming eyes were staring at you. You stood there frozen. The beast didn’t move as well. Is Haknyeon here? Where is he? Is he hurt?
You looked around for him. You heard a loud thud and when you looked up again the beast had disappeared.
“Haknyeon?” you yelled and started searching the ruins for him.
The thought of him being hurt sent you into complete panic mode. You searched the ruins and its surrounding the whole night. No trace of him. Luckily, the beast didn’t come back.
In the early morning hours, you found Haknyeon. He was covered in dirt and blood. He was lying unconscious in a small stream. You ran over to him and dragged his head out of the water and into your lap. With shaking hands, you tried to feel his pulse. When you felt his pulse, breathed out loudly, feeling relieved. You shook him gently while caressing his hair. Slowly he opened his eyes.
As he saw you he smiled and your heart skipped a beat. His hand reached up to your face and gently whipped away your tears. You didn’t even realise you were crying.
“What happened? Why are you crying, beautiful?” he asked with a hoarse voice.
“You happened! I thought you were dead. I searched the whole night for you.”
“You did?” he asked.
The surprise was on his face for a short second but then it was replaced with a cocky smirk.
“You like me!” he stated.
“I thought you know that!” you replied and splashed some water in his face.
A boyish grin took over his face and he moved away from your lap and started splashing you with water as well.
You giggled: “Stop. Aren’t you hurt?”
“Nope!” he replied and continued on with splashing water at you.
You decided to also attack him with water. And soon you both played fighting in the middle of the small stream and you both couldn't stop giggling. Haknyeon’s arms were wrapped around you to keep you from splashing water at him. You squirmed in his grip as he pulled you close to him. You stopped squirming when you realised your faces were only inches apart. You looked into his eyes which were staring so lovingly at you. It still hurt that he wouldn’t tell you why he is staying in the forest. It just didn’t make sense. Doesn’t he trust you enough? You just wanted him to be safe.
He laid his forehead against yours and as if he had heard your thought he said: “I’m sorry. I just can’t tell you everything. And I’m afraid you run away from me!”
“Please try!”, you mumbled.
Both of your eyes began to water.
He placed a fleeting kiss on your lips and then whispered: "I'm cursed. And I physically can't tell you anything about my curse."
“The curse keeps you in the forest?” you asked and he nodded.
You slung your arms around his neck and hugged him. He pushed his head into your neck.
You heard of curses before. You knew there weren’t just stories to scare children. When you were younger, there was this cursed man who couldn’t remember his name and life anymore. He didn’t even know he was cursed. The curse was broken when he found out was his name was.
“Can you show me your curse?” you asked.
He shook his head.
“Do you know how to break it?”
“I have an idea. But it feels impossible," he mumbled into your neck and cuddled closer to you.
“I will try to help you, ok?”
He just nodded at that and moved his hand under your thigh to carry you. With you in his arms, he went out of the water and laid you gently on the grass growing at the edge. He bent over you and looked at you again with those loving eyes.
"You are the best thing that has ever happened to me," he said softly, his hand tenderly stroking your cheek.
You smiled at him and pulled his face closer to you.
Then, he kissed you. You still had so many questions, but his kiss and his proximity made you forget about everything. As his lips moved against yours, time seemed to stop and nothing else but he was important now. As he slowly pulled away, you didn’t allow him to be more than a few centimetres away from your lips. He chuckled lowly. One of his hands caressed your side lovingly.
“I’m not going anywhere!” he breathed out against your lips.
“You’re not close enough!” you replied, still a little breathless.
Still, you pulled him into another kiss. This one was more intense and you wrapped your legs around his waist to pull his body flush against yours. Haknyeon groaned into the kiss when your hips touched. He couldn’t help but grind a little into you, which made you moan in return. Your hand went into his hair and you pulled lightly. He kissed you again with more lust. Your body began to feel very hot from the fiery kisses you shared and you wanted more of him.
But Haknyeon began to slow down the kiss. You whined against his lips. He pecked your lips several times as an apology.
“You don’t deserve this. I should take you to the castle and make love to you on a huge bed.” Haknyeon mumbled with his eyes still closed.
“Which castle?” you giggled and softly run your fingers through his still-wet hair.
A blush crept up his cheek: "The one, you deserve to live in.”
You giggled again and Haknyeon showered you with short pecks all over your face, so would keep giggling. When he was finished, he smiled proudly at you. A small breeze came through the trees and made you shiver. You were still soaking from the rain last night and your shenanigans in the water with Haknyeon. He noticed immediately and rubbed your arms to warm you up a little bit.
“We should get you home before you get sick. Your father is probably worried.” Haknyeon said and sat up while pulling you with him.
As you two walked through the forest, Haknyeon kept you close to him in hopes to warm you a little bit.
“Has the Beast something to do with the curse?” you asked as you reached the meadow by your cottage.
Haknyeon didn’t answer but he didn’t have to. You were pretty sure that his curse and the beast were connected.
As you reached the cottage, you told Haknyeon to wait for a minute. Inside you went straight to your jewellery box and took out an amulet with a rose on it. You went back to Haknyeon and told him to close his eyes. With a grin, he closed his eyes and then he tried to relax his lips.
He was hoping you would kiss him and you couldn't let him down, so you gave him a quick kiss. Haknyeon had other plans. He wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you closer, effectively prolonging the kiss. You smiled against his lips and softly laid the amulet around his neck.
As the lock clicked into place, Haknyeon detached himself from you. He looked back and forth between you and the amulet in amazement.
“It’s a little present. So you’re not completely alone. I’m always with you.” you explained and felt heat rush to your cheeks again.
Haknyeon’s cheeks also turned red but looked really touched and grateful. He pulled you again into a kiss. It was a very soft and loving kiss.
“When will I see you again?”, you asked him.
“Soon. I try to come tomorrow, okay?”
You only nodded. Your heart ached at the thought of letting him go.
“Will you promise to stay out of the forest?”
“Nope!”
He sighed: “I already thought so. But I thought asking wouldn’t hurt.”
He gave you a kiss on your temple and mumbled: “Thank you!”
You smiled at him and neither of you wanted to go.
“Please go inside now and warm up.”, Haknyeon whispered against your hair as he pulled you into a hug.
“Not before you leave!”, you replied.
Slowly, Haknyeon let go of you and started to walk backwards.
“Turn around. You will fall!” you scolded him.
He just grinned and shook his head. So you have to endure, Haknyeon walking backwards to the forest. When he has disappeared between the trees, you want into the cottage to wash up.
You had a lot to do today. First of all, tell the old lady in the village you survived the night and she doesn’t have to look after your father. Secondly, visit the library to find out more about curses and how to break them. And lastly, find a way to kill the beast. The beast puts Haknyeon in danger every night and maybe if the beast is dead, his curse will be broken.
After visiting the old lady, you went to the library. You found out if you’re cursed you can’t talk about your curse and how to break it. People close to the cursed shouldn’t help, that’s why witches took this precaution. A witch couldn’t take back her curse, so searching for the witch who cursed Haknyeon wasn’t really an option.
The curses are often inspired by fairytales. You searched in your mind, for a fairytale with a beast. The first one that came to your mind was Beauty and The Beast. Could Haknyeon be the Beast? You thought back to the first night you met both of them. He saved you from the beast and you once heard the beast while you were with Haknyeon. It didn’t really make sense. But maybe killing the beast isn’t the best idea. Just in case, you thought. Maybe catching the beast with a trap would get you more clarity. But you knew nothing about traps, so you decided to visit Gaston.
Gaston wasn’t home, but he was in the local tavern. You didn’t have a good feeling while you entered the tavern. You spotted Gaston drinking with his friend in a corner. You walked over to them.
“Hi! Gaston? Do you have a minute?”
“Have you changed your mind?” he slurred and almost fell out of his chair.
His friend laughed.
“No, but I need your help. I need to know how to build a trap!” you said.
“Depends on what you want to catch?”, a friend of his who is much soberer answered.
“A beast?”, you said and they all laughed again.
One of the older hunters came to the table: “A beast? The same story that your father tries to tell us?”
You hesitantly nodded and everyone else laughed.
“Get the pastor and send someone to the cottage to get her father. They both have lost their mind. They’re crazy. She keeps seeing a boy that doesn’t exist.” Gaston said, he still sounded drunk but no one cared.
He was popular, after all. You, on the other hand, weren't.
“Is that true? You see a boy?” a middle-aged woman asked.
“No. Haknyeon does really exist," you replied angrily.
“Oh, he has a name.” the woman laughed and everyone else joined.
“And where does your boy live?”
“In the forest!” you replied before you could shut yourself up.
Everyone laughed again but you didn’t care. You needed to get out of here. As you turned to the door to leave as fast as possible, the older hunter gripped your arm so tight that it hurt.
“Let me go!”, you hissed, but it was no use.
Before you knew it, you were locked in a carriage. Not much later, the villagers threw your father into the carriage with you.
"Papa! Are you all right?" you asked as you crawled to him.
He nodded, dazed.
"My dear, what are they going to do to us?"
You shrugged even though you already had a pretty good idea where they were going to take you. To the asylum. The carriage started moving. When the carriage stopped, you were met by guards in front of the asylum. When the heavy gates closed behind you, you felt so helpless again. How you hated that feeling. Would it never end?
Your father and you were locked in a cell together with the comment that the doctor would be here soon to take you for a first examination.
"I didn't know we were sick, my dear," your father said.
"We're not!" you grumbled as you paced up and down the cell.
Your father lay down on one of the beds. You didn't understand how he could relax with the agonising screams that came to you from time to time. You had to find a way out of here as quickly as possible.
The doctor arrived earlier than expected and had guards lead you both through the building to an examination room. On the way, you caught a glimpse of a crowd of tortured souls sitting whimpering in the corners of their cells. Soon your father and you would be one of them. And you could no longer help Haknyeon? But maybe he could help you? But that only happened in fairy tales. Gaston and his friends would probably hunt him to death at the latest. You really underestimated Gaston's jealousy.
Your thoughts were interrupted by the sight of the examination room. All sorts of bloody equipment hung on the wall and the doctor donned a bloody apron. Your stomach turned and you began to struggle against the guards' grip.
"Well, let's start with the young lady."
You were strapped to the table so that you could no longer move. Another gag was shoved into your mouth.
"What are you doing with my daughter?" your father asked indignantly, "She doesn't know anything about my inventions!"
The doctor laughed and ordered the guards to tie him to the chair. He was also gagged, for you only heard muffled sounds from him.
“That will hurt now a little.” the doctor said and felt how something is injected into your arms.
Shortly afterwards you felt your body getting heavy and you couldn't even move your fingers. You were briefly lit up once in the eyes. Then something cool was pressed to your temples. A little later you heard a slight chill and then an unbelievable pain went through your body and your muscles tensed up. Your scream was stifled by the gag. You wanted to move away from the cold metal touching your head but there was no escape. After the third shock, you passed out and woke up when you were back in your cell.
Your father lay in the bed on the opposite side. You were feeling dizzy but you got up anyway to check up on your father. His breath was steady and didn’t seem to have any injuries. You sighed with relief and went back to your own bed. Your body felt drained from all energy and you just wanted to sleep. As laid down, you close your eyes and could feel sleep taking over.
But then you were startled awake by a howl. At first, you thought you were dreaming. But the howl became louder and you heard the clashing of metal against stones. Some patients screamed, but that wasn’t really unusually.
You got up again as you heard a roar again. It sounded like the beast. You went to the bars that separated you from your freedom. One of the patients, whose skull was shaved bald and covered with scars, ran past.
"Wait!" you shouted, "What's going on?"
"A beast is here and it's tearing open the cells!" the patient shouted in panic and ran on.
You tried as best you could to stick your head out of the cell to look in the direction where the patient had come from. More and more patients ran past you and the turmoil grew even bigger. The first thing you saw was his red eyes. It was indeed the beast, fighting its way through the corridor. By now there were also several guards trying to fight the beast.
You retreated back into the cell and crawled to your father. You shook him awake. Confused and dazed, he looked around.
"The beast is here!" you whispered and his gaze immediately cleared.
"Crawl under the bed, dear," he ordered you and you obeyed.
He came to you under the bed. A little later, the beast stood in front of your cell and tore the bars out of the wall and threw them at the guards. It was bigger than you remembered which didn’t make it any less frightening. It didn't notice you and went to the next cell. Your father crawled under the bed. You followed it and your father helped you up.
"Let's get out of here before it comes back," your father said and dragged you out of the now open cell.
He turned in the direction away from the beast, but you couldn't help turning around to look at the beast. It was by now surrounded by guards and had to endure several stabs from their spears. What if Haknyeon was the beast? Then you had to help him. And you stopped running.
"Come!" urged your father.
Then the beast looked up and looked you straight in the eye. All your focus was on the beast. It knocked the guards aside, slapping them against the wall like dolls. Then it ran towards you and your father called your name. But you did not react. You stood rooted to the spot. Why else would the beast be here if it is not Haknyeon?
The beast came to a halt in front of you and let out a growl. Then you discovered the amulet dangling around the beast's neck.
"Haknyeon!" you breathed and reached out your trembling hand to him.
The beast came even closer. Neither you nor the beast saw your father coming. He had taken the spear of an unconscious guard and was charging at the beast. When its muzzle touched your hand, it crackled in the air and the beast's chest began to glow.
It was into this glow that your father thrust his spear. The beast sacked to the ground.
"Haknyeon!" you shouted and ran to the beast, which slowly began to change into a boy.
Haknyeon knelt on the ground, the spear still in his chest. Blood began to pour out of his mouth.
He coughed a little before speaking softly, "You have broken the curse."
Tears streamed down your face as you panicked, trying to calm the bleeding around the spear.
"My brother and I were both very conceited, so a witch cursed us. Every night we would become beasts and the curse can only be broken if someone loves both sides of us," Haknyeon explained.
"I didn't know you had a brother," you said as you tried to prop him up.
"He was the one who had hurt you and also your father. He is now more beast than man. He has started to change during the day. Every night he wanted to go out of the forest to attack people. I fought with him every night to stop him."
Everything seemed to make sense now.
"What is your brother doing now?" you asked, realising what it might mean if Haknyeon was here now and not stopping his brother.
Haknyeon murmured: "I'm sorry. I know the people in the village don't deserve it. But I couldn't leave you here."
You looked up to your father who was standing next to you pale as a sheet, guilt written all over his face.
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't know."
"It's okay. You were trying to protect your daughter. I probably would have done the same."
"You would never have hurt me!"
"No. I would have killed myself before that."
More tears stream down your face as Haknyeon's eyelids slowly began to flutter.
"No, please don't." you pleaded, "Stay with me!"
You heard the guards starting to collect the patients again and put them in other still intact cells.
"Go now! Get as far away as you can with your father. Start a new life, far away from here."
"No, I won't."
"I'm beyond help. Go!" he gasped, coughing up more blood.
"The boy is right. Let's go."
"I love you!" you murmured desperately, unwilling to break away from him.
"I love you too. You're the best thing that's happened to me. The most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
He smiled weakly and darted away briefly, driving the spear deeper into his chest. Your vision was blinded by your tears but you felt how you were picked up. You trashed against the hold, but the grip was strong. You saw the bleeding Haknyeon getting smaller and smaller. The last thing you saw was how he completely collapsed. You had found the love of your life and managed to break his curse, just to lose him.
“Of all things, you would have thought that the rain was innocuous enough. Turns out, nothing is innocuous in this Gods forsaken place!” geralt and reader, if your still taking requests!
Hey anon! I’m sorry this is a bit later than I would’ve hoped, but this prompt took some figuring out. In the end, I went for a witcher!reader (I kept it genderneutral, since you didn’t specify. I hope that’s okay). Not sure how it came out, but I hope you like it anyway!
Prompt: 47. “Of all things, you would have thought that the rain was innocuous enough. Turns out, nothing is innocuous in this Gods forsaken place!”
Warnings (start after the cut): canon-typical violence, brief description of animal killing, graphic description of blood and injury, swearing, (feral) witcher!reader. Phew, this is on the angsty side. I needed to get that out of my system, clearly.
You don’t really know how you ended up in this place, much less how you and your companion will find a way out of here. You hear Geralt curse next to you, which only has you rolling your eyes at him. Like cursing and sulking will be any help at all. You bite back the sardonic comment sitting at the tip of your tongue, because as much as you like to think otherwise, your sarcasm won’t improve your situation either.
You re-adjust the two swords strapped to your back and thumb your medallion the way you always do when you’re feeling jittery before a hunt. You feel the Cat-shaped pendant vibrate as you take several steps into the unknown territory you and Geralt portalled into. Your mutated green-yellowish eyes and your keen ears are alert as you take in your surroundings. The place seems deserted, but you know better than to lower your guard. In your line of work, danger is always just around the corner.
“I told you not to step through that stupid portal,” Geralt grouses next to you. You heave a long-suffering sigh and level him with an unimpressed glare.
“For the last time, I thought it was our only way out of there,” you tell him before returning your attention to the strange environment. Everything is quiet… too quiet. “Besides, the toxic fumes were filling the room and we would’ve died of asphyxiation. You’re welcome.”
“Fuck, Y/N. Can’t you see this is a trap?”
“Of course it’s a trap,” you snap, whirling around so you can face Geralt and glower at him, “but we’re alive, aren’t we, which we wouldn’t be if we stayed in that godsforsaken cave!”
“You don’t know that!”
“You didn’t have to follow me,” you challenge him as you step up to him until your faces are mere inches apart, “you could’ve stayed in that cave and died, for all I care! So don’t blame me for your predicament. You had a choice to make, and you made it! End of discussion.”
You feel your anger coursing hotly through your veins, but you will yourself to calm down by taking a few controlled breaths. Now is not the time to lose yourself - you need to be alert, and ready to fight whatever monster decides to attack you first. It turns out neither of you have to wait all that long for the first ambush. You hear the growling of wolves before you see them. You and Geralt both unsheathe your silver swords at the same time, eyes riveted on the pack currently surrounding you.
“Ready?” you ask, a feral grin spreading on your lips as you feel the anticipation rise in you with each passing second.
“Always,” Geralt replies before stepping forward and piercing the first wolf with his sword. Instinctively, you bounce onto the ball of your feet and run in the opposite direction towards your half of the pack. Your movements are light and graceful as you bring your sword far above your head, then down with enough brute force to decapitate the first beast. Before a second wolf can jump at you, you pirouette out of the way, then slash at the wolf’s belly. A third and fourth one flank you, but you manage to roll out of the way in the nick of time. You make quick work of the remaining wolves, and when you turn around to check on Geralt, you see the other witcher panting heavily among a heap of dead wolves. Your eyes meet, but he doesn’t match your giddy grin.
Geralt, always the soft-hearted son of a bitch.
“Let’s go,” you urge him as you wipe the blood off your sword with the hem of your shirt, “like our instructors at Stygga said, where there’s a way in, there has to be a way out.”
You hear Geralt grumble something unintelligible under his breath, but you decide to ignore him in favour of searching for said way out. As far as you’re concerned, he can either be part of the problem, or part of the solution. You know which side you picked. Eventually, Geralt falls into step with you, and the two of you scan your surroundings in a companionable silence. While Geralt seems unsettled and nervous, you find yourself smiling as you saunter through these strange lands. You always affectioned chaos more than order, anyway. Chaos is your element.
You know Geralt doesn’t feel that way, but that’s why you two are the perfect match. Opposites attract, or so they say.
After a while of walking around the place and not encountering other enemies, you’re beginning to think that whoever is in charge of this place wants to toy with you and Geralt. A mage is behind this, there’s no doubt about that, and a clever one at that. They, whoever they might be, must be observing you from afar. It’s like an elaborate game of cat and mouse. The thought makes you smile, and you thumb your medallion again.
You always enjoyed a good mouse chase.
Eventually, something begins to change. The world around you darkens as black clouds roll in over your heads, heavy with the promise of rain and thunder. When the first drop of water hits your skin, you feel an unfamiliar itch right where it hit you. Not thinking much about it, you poke your tongue out and catch the raindrop that hit your lips. The tangy, metallic taste of blood fills your mouth… and that’s when you see it. This is no regular rain. This is a shower of blood.
How very dramatic!
“Of all things, you would have thought that the rain was innocuous enough,” Geralt shouts over the low rumbling of thunder, “turns out, nothing is innocuous in this Gods forsaken place!”
“Geralt, look!” You point north, where your keen eyes caught the sight of something shimmering in the distance. “The portal! Run, we don’t have much time.”
You sprint in that direction, confident that Geralt will be close behind you - or at least, you hope he is. You don’t look back and make a beeline for the portal in the distance. The rain falls harder, lightning hitting the ground right next to your feet. It is only thanks to your feline-like reflexes that you manage to dodge the treacherous strikes. Out of the corner of your eyes, you can see that Geralt has caught up with you and is expertly sidestepping various monsters the mage conjured out of nowhere. The portal is just within reach. You’re almost there… almost… Then you hear it. The distinct sound of something tackling Geralt to the ground. You stop dead in your tracks, your eyes darting between your freedom and the witcher you have come to care very deeply about. Your heart is racing in your chest… the choice really shouldn’t be so difficult.
“Y/N!” you hear Geralt call out to you, “Y/N, save yourself!”
He’s giving you permission to leave him. You briefly consider doing just that, your eyes lingering on the portal. You think that if you’re fast enough, you’ll be able to make it. But a small voice inside your voice tells you that this is more than that. This is the mage toying with you both now. Why else would the portal remain open for so long? Whoever they are expect you to leave Geralt behind… and you won’t give them that satisfaction. You unsheathe your sword and fight off the beasts - nekkers, as it turns out - tackling Geralt to the ground.
“What are you doing?” he roars, and there’s a desperate edge to his tone that you’re unfamiliar with, “Y/N, save yourself! The portal…”
You ignore Geralt’s protests as you feel your blood rage consume you. Geralt’s voice dies in his throat at the sight of you butchering the group of nekkers which a few seconds ago had been pinning Geralt to the ground. You aren’t aware of your own movements anymore, your emotions having well and truly taken over your instincts and lowered your inhibitions. Only when you’ve killed every last nekker do you hoist Geralt to his feet and pull him towards the portal once more.
You don’t know how you made it in time - perhaps the mage took pity on you - but the next thing you know, you feel yourself fall through the portal. You feel like being dragged through space and time by a hook attached to your navel. It’s uncomfortable and painful, but over within several seconds. The air in your lungs is knocked out of you when you hit the ground with brute force. You hear the distinct snapping of bones as both you and Geralt collapse on the forest floor, followed by pained groans falling from both your mouths.
“Fuck!” he curses breathily, “That was close.”
“Too fucking close.” You hiss as you try to push yourself up onto your knees. “Shit! There go my ribs.”
“Tell me about it. I think I broke my arm.”
“We’ll live,” you state conversationally, as if you were discussing the weather. A near hysterical laugh pushes past your lips. “Shit, Geralt. I was right. I told you if there’s a way in, there’s always a way out.”
You watch Geralt roll onto his side and sit up, face pulled in a pained frown as he cradles his broken arm to his chest. Your eyes widen at the sight of him, caked in dry blood from the torrential rain, giving Geralt a near feral look. You guess you don’t look in much better shape if the look in his amber eyes is anything to go by. You manage to crawl up to him and catch his lips in a sloppy kiss.
“Thank you,” he whispers in a gravelly voice in between heated kisses, “for coming back for me.”
“Don’t let it get to your head,” you tell him, “you’d have done the same for me. You wolf witchers are all self-sacrificing bastards.”
“Only for the people who deserve it,” Geralt adds as he cups your face with the hand attached to his good arm, “make of that what you will.”
You offer a kinder smile, your eyes softening as you take in the sight of your lover. You’re both alive. You both made it. Not that you ever doubted that for a second. Well… maybe for a tiny second.
“I’ve told you before. I can be very likeable, when I’m amenable to it.”
Part: 1 I 2 I 3 I 4 I 5 I 6 I 7 I 8 I 9 I 10 I Epilogue
**
The sound of your pencil tapping lightly against your notebook must have been annoying those around you, but you were too focused on the digital clock hanging above the professor’s head to care. Bright red numbers stole your attention; each time it changed you sat up a still straighter, scooted closer to the edge of your seat. The darkness of the room didn’t help. Even with the projector shining the notes you were supposed to be absorbing did nothing to block out the beacon. You were starving.
Okay, maybe not literally, but you were definitely ravenous. Breakfast had been the last thing on your mind this morning and now you were paying for it severely. A headache brewed right under the surface and your stomach gurgled and bubbled from the emptiness. The thought of leaving early did cross your mind, but that would have been rude, not to mention highly inconvenient since you were seated near the middle of the small lecture hall. It was best to avoid the dirty looks and low curses from those that you have to crawl over to get the stairs on the edge.
“And that ends the lesson for today.” The professor walked over to the side and flipped on the light. The sudden brightness made you squint, but it was worth the relief you felt. He’d ended the lesson a whole ten minutes early. You packed your belongs as quietly as possible while still keeping a listening ear. “Please look over chapter six, sections one and two before next class, there will be a two question quiz over the passages.” You scribbled a reminder down in the corner of your notebook and hopped up out of your seat. You weren’t the only one who had called it quits for the day even though the professor was still talking. “Don’t forget the first outline of your project is due next class as well, if it’s not turned in then it’s an automatic twenty percent deduction.”
Standing in line to shuffle out from the row of desks, you made a mental note to go over your outline one more time. You were already on the third stage of the project – gathering the necessary sources for the paper – but it was still a good idea to count your ducks and make sure they were lined up nicely.
You hurried to the cafeteria. The moment you were inside you hopped in the first line you saw, not bothering to take the time to consider your options. The line you were in was for the salads and sandwiches; boring food it was. Your stomach didn’t care if your taste buds weren’t going to be blown away today, it only needed sustenance. With your tray full, you moved over to the cash register and paid for your meal before finding a free table.
“Hungry much?”
Willa slid into the chair across from you, her own tray holding the spaghetti special. The buttery garlic smell drifted over to you and made your mouth water. You chewed slowly on your bland sandwich. Maybe later you could stop by for an afternoon snack….
“Already started without me, I see.” Eric dropped his bag in the half booth beside you and kissed the top of your head.
You smiled up at him. “Early bird gets the worm.”
“But the second mouse gets the cheese,” he countered as he pushed his glasses up his nose.
You leaned around him and stared at the long lines forming across the way. “I don’t think that second half applies here. You better get going before all the good stuff is gone.”
Erik followed your gaze. “Oh, crap. You’re right. Be right back!”
After swallowing a mouthful of noodles, Willa sighed. “You two are so cute.”
You snickered under your breath, but didn’t reply. Erik and you had met in World Music Appreciation your freshman year. In class, he was the slightly loud, slightly obnoxious kid who sat behind you with his friends. Somehow – and to this day you still weren’t sure the steps that led to it – you ended up in their study group for the final exam. You found that the boy who sat behind you was indeed funny, but also intelligent, generally entertaining to be around. After passing the exam that was much harder than any introductory music class should have been, you found yourself going out for celebratory pizza with him that morphed into your first date. The two of you had settled into a comfortableness with each other and you were happy.
As if trying to contradict you, Minseok’s face made an appearance in your mind. You shook the image of his smile away. That… that wasn’t good.
“Not hungry anymore?” Finally through the line, Erik sat down beside you and cracked open the can of pop he’d purchased. You looked down at the half-eaten sandwich in your hand. You hadn’t realized you’d stopped eating. The grumbling of your stomach hadn’t completely subsided, however, the bread and meat combination was no longer remotely appealing. Was this your “grass is always greener” moment?
To wave away the thoughts, you became playful again, reaching over and plucking a lob of cheese off the fresh slice of pizza on Erik’s plate and tossed in your mouth. “No, I just decided that your food looks better.”
“Well, then here.” Erik picked up your plate, took the sandwich out of your hand and slid his tray over to your side. “I’ll eat this.”
“No, Erik, give it back.”
“Seriously, (y/n), it’s fine.”
“Holy crap.”
Willa’s soft outburst stopped the playful argument in its tracks. “What is it?” Erik asked after taking a bite of your sandwich. Giving in, you nibbled on the pizza as you waited for the answer. Your taste buds cheered in victory. This was much better.
“A couple campers were attacked last night in the woods.” Willa’s eyes were trained on her phone, scanning the article that fed her the information. Whatever words she was reading, they must have been bad. Normally, Willa was the more upbeat, nothing-gets-her-down type. It must have been bad.
You leaned forward on the table. Your happy mood at the better-tasting meal as disappeared, replaced by worry. “What was it? Does it say?”
Willa swallowed thickly. “The one that was still awake said it was a wolf. A really big wolf.”
“The one that was still awake?”
“Yeah. I guess there were three of them. One died and one’s in the ICU. The third was only sort of injured when the park rangers found them.”
“Maybe he did it,” Erik said skeptically.
“I thought the same thing, but the police say the scene was consistent with an animal attack.” She clicked the lock button on the side of her phone and put it down. Her eyes flickered to you then back down at her food. It didn’t take a telepath to figure out where her mind had gone.
Erik threw an arm around your shoulders. “See why I don’t like the idea of you going out there by yourself?”
Guilt sunk your stomach. Now you really didn’t feel like eating. To try and hide it, you smiled up at him. “I’ve always understood, but you’re right, that’s a scary thing happen and it could happen to anyone.”
Satisfied, Erik removed his arm and turned his focus back to eating. You continued to pick at the cheese in order to throw off any suspicion. While the guilt of lying was still there, that wasn’t at the most forefront of your thoughts. As plausible as it was, you hoped that it wasn’t your wolf that attacked those people. Well, the wolf didn’t belong to you, but you couldn’t image such a creature killing a human being. He’d seemed to gentle and sweet to be able to do such a thing.
It was an animal, you reminded yourself. They ran on pure instinct. Besides, you didn’t know the whole story. Perhaps, if it was the same one you met in the clearing, he was provoked. Idiots were always teasing animals, whether at the zoo or the park. It was quite possible that the campers brought it upon themselves.
No. You shouldn’t think like that. A person died. Sighing, you pushed the tray away from you.
“Full?” Erik asked. You nodded and he picked up the remains of the pizza, devouring it in only a few short bites. You giggled at the grease stain left in the corner of his mouth. With the napkin, you wiped it away and started to feel somewhat at ease again.
**
Minseok was devastated. There was no other word for it. This- this was not a possibility he had imagined. How could fate be so cruel?
As he stood near the entrance of the cafeteria, he’d been overjoyed at spotting you, sitting alone at one of the hybrid tables near the middle of the large crowded room, devouring the food in front of you like Chanyeol at his favorite burger place. For a moment, he’d considered walking over and saying hi, but thought better of it since he wasn’t alone. Jongdae was chatting about his classes, laughing merrily with Jongin and Yixing beside him. All the noise was a simple hum in Minseok’s ears. His fellow students were nothing but blurs his peripheral; only you were in focus. One foot started your way despite his previous hesitation, but then another girl sat down across from you. He took that as a sign to slow down. Then a guy joined you, placing his bag down as if he owned that space beside you, and kissed your head. You beamed up at him.
The ground shook beneath his feet, vibrating his whole body. An elbow connected with his stomach and made him flinch. “Hey, you okay?” Jongdae asked.
“Yeah,” Minseok lied as he turned away from the sight that caused his blood to boil. The wolf had never been so hard to fight before. Human. He had to be completely human here. “But I think I’m going to take my food back to the lounge.”
“What? Why?”
“Is everything alright?” Yixing tilted his head in that way he always did when he was trying to read through the expressions on their faces. It was irritating at times, especially when they didn’t want to talk about whatever was bothering them. He meant well, but he wasn’t learning to become that kind of doctor.
“Yeah, yeah.” Shoving his hands in his pockets, Minseok forced himself to turn away before he stormed across the cafeteria. The sure fire way of having you reject him would be to slam your boyfriend against the wall. Jongdae opened his mouth to counter, but Minseok was already moving into the line, grabbing a faded red tray still wet from the washer and sliding it across the three metal bars that kept the herd of college students at bay. He swiped up a plate with a lukewarm slice of pizza and kept going. Bypassing everything else, the last thing he grabbed was a can of flavored coffee from the open fridge before going to the register.
Jongdae pouted as Minseok waved goodbye and walked out of the building. His grip on the tray was strained, knuckles pale and tendons popping out from under the skin on the back of his hands. This complicated things well beyond the obstacles he already had in his way. And here he had the fairytale in his head, thinking he would simply meet you, continue to “coincidentally” run into you and get to know you until the two of you naturally fell in love and then… well, he didn’t exactly have a plan after that, but now that would really have to be put off while he figured out how to get past step one.
Arriving at the mathematics college where he spent most of his time, he made his way through the halls until he found the lounge reserved for the GTAs. There were tables where they studied and put together lesson plans as well as couches where more naps occurred than other types of casual reclining. Against one wall was a stereo equipped with Bluetooth while a TV and game console sat across the way. It was a room where they could relax and bounce ideas off each other. The place was empty at the moment, most of the usual occupants either in class or eating lunch with their friends.
Minseok sat down at one of the tables. He aggressively chewed on the pizza as he tried not to think about what he saw a few minutes ago. And here he thought eventually telling you that he was a wolf was going to be the hard part. A large group came in then, happily talking amongst themselves. Spotting Minseok, they joined him. Sungkyu took the seat to Minseok’s right and dropped a heavy binder on the table.
“Sometimes I wonder why I took this job,” Sungkyu grumbled.
So much for peace and quiet. Oh, well, hopefully this would serve as a nice distraction. Minseok could go back to planning his next step later, once he’d calmed down a bit.
“Having fun with the freshman?” Minseok teased. As GTAs, that was the main group they taught. Not all classes were bad, but it usually took a while for some of them to realize that college was much more serious than high school.
“Actually, it’s not a freshman.” Opening the binder, Sungkyu pulled out a few papers stapled together. A sticky note covered the name written at the top, but the red ink that dictated the score was out for the world to see. “She’s close to our age, a senior, but she put this class off until the last minute. And I’m starting to see why. I don’t want to fail her, but….”
“Just give her an extra credit project,” Varya suggested between sips of her peach tea.
“Like what?”
Changmin was the first to have an idea. “Have her put together a project that applies the math to whatever her major is.”
Sungkyu wrinkled his nose at the idea. “That sounds complicated. She’s an arts major.”
“Get someone to help her with it.”
“Are you volunteering?” Varya snorted. Changmin was… charming and used it quite well, to put it mildly. “Who is it? Maybe I’ll help.”
Sungkyu peeled back the sticky note. “(y/n) (l/n).”
Minseok nearly choked on his food. Was this fate giving him a Get Out of Jail free card?
Varya shrugged. “Never heard of her.”
“I’ll do it!” The word were out before Minseok could figure out how to say them without sounding overeager. Everyone at the table was staring at him, confused. He wasn’t the kind to volunteer for these sort of things. He wasn’t the kind to add additional interactions to his schedule; he was too much of an introvert for it.
“You hate any sort of tutoring,” Sungkyu pointed out.
“I need it… for my resume.” He didn’t even have a resume. At least not a serious one. The last time he’d put together the paper bragging about himself was for a class three years ago. The file was probably somewhere on his laptop, but he doubted he would ever actually add something like this to it.
While Changmin and Varya still eyed him curiously, Sungkyu simply shrugged. “Whatever. This is only if she agrees to do it, anyway.”
“If she wants to graduate, she’ll do it.” Standing up, Varya threw out the remaining ice in her reusable cup and slipped her bag over her shoulder. “I’ll see you guys later. I’ve got a research paper that’s not going to write itself.”
In an overdramatic fashion, Changmin placed his hand over his heart and looked to the ceiling. “If only they did. My school career would be so much easier.”
Sungkyu rolled his eyes. “And yet completely negate the purpose of it all.” Changmin wasn’t bothered by the comment at all, pulling out his phone and scrolling through his social media as he leaned back in his chair. Sungkyu replaced the sadly scored paper and closed his binder. “Are you free tomorrow a little after four?” he asked Minseok. “I want to try and catch her after class. I’m sure she’ll agree to do the extra credit, but maybe having you right there to say you’ll help will nudge her if she’s on the fence about it.”
“Absolutely.” There was no way Minseok was going let this opportunity go. Maybe this was the better way to go about it. The two of you would be spending time together while he helped you with this project; endless time just you and him. He could get to know you, learn about what you liked and disliked, where you saw yourself going and where you’d already been. Then he could properly fight for your heart, win his mate over the right way. The excitement of what awaited him was almost too much. Tomorrow couldn’t come soon enough.
**
You wanted to disintegrate there in your seat.
Right on the front of the homework you just received back was a sticky note asking you to stay back after class. Never had you want a period to not end, to go on and on in a cycle of torture. You knew it was about it your recent grades. It wasn’t as if you weren’t trying. But this subject had never been your strong suit and recently it had been harder to grasp the concepts. You were an arts student, a photographer. When were you ever really going to need to know how to find the function of x after this?
Unfortunately, the end came and you stayed seated while the younger students happily skipped out of the classroom. When it was only the two of you left, you got up and walked over to the desk.
“That bad, uh?” you said in an attempt to lighten your own mood.
Sungkyu, at least, seemed a little sympathetic. “I’ve seen worse.”
“Well, not everyone can be a math genius.”
“No. That’s why I’m going to give you a chance to make up the points.”
You perked up. This was… somewhat good, given your mind had wondered if he was going to suggest you drop the class for now and try again later, under a different teacher. “Really?” You couldn’t help but feel like a rabbit jumping for a carrot hanging in the air. “Whatever it is, I’ll do it.”
“Good.” Sungkyu reached behind him and plucked up a sheet of paper before leaning back against the desk. “I’ve got an outline here that’ll explain the project in detail.” He handed it over to you before continuing. “The basics, though, are pretty much just write a paper of how the subject relates to your major.”
You’ve got to be kidding me. Clearing your throat, you said, “O-okay. I think I can do that. Except….”
“You don’t know where to start?” Sungkyu guessed. You nodded. “That’s alright. I’m not going to make you do it alone. I’ve enlisted some help for you. Minseok?”
In from the hallway strolled in the very same Minseok you’d run into the day before. There was no way…. You nearly laughed out loud. This couldn’t possibly be a coincidence, could it? But the manner in which he shyly waved at you and fidgeted from foot to foot told you that it might be.
“Minseok will help you with the research and come with ideas. He’ll also help you with the examples that way you get all the points. Is that alright?”
Your stomach did a backflip. This meant the two of you would be spending time together – alone. Which wasn’t anything unusual; you’d had project partners of the opposite sex before, but none of them sent your heart leaping either. Perhaps it would be best to keep this on a need-to-know basis for the time being. Smiling, you looked at the expectant GTA.
“Peachy.”
Track by Track Review - Hottest 100 2020
Wrote this article a little bit ago just for fun. Decided to post it on here with the thought of maybe getting back to the Bish Review. Also, put an asterix next to my votes (songs that made my top 10). Anyway, here we go:
100. Kool - BENEE
One of the many gems from ‘Hey u x’. Unlucky to hear her biggest hit so early on.
99. Itch - Hockey Dad
I thought ‘Brain Candy’ was a little bit of a disappointment, but Itch was one of the strongest tracks they duo have released.
98. Your Man - Joji
Surprised to hear this track in the countdown. Pretty solid tune though
97. Audacity (feat. Headie One) - Stormzy
He’s still one of the best from the UK rap scene and this track shows why.
96. Germaphobe - Hockey Dad
One of the weaker tracks, I thought, off Brain Candy, but not surprised a lot of Hockey Dad fans liked this one. Definitely plays into their audience’s taste.
95. Loose Ends (feat. G Flip) - Illy
I do not like Aussie Hip Pop. This track is not an exception.
94. Rain (feat. Tay Keith) - Aitch and AJ Tracey
The piano in this is very ‘Humble’ - Kendrick Lamar. Still a banger though.
93. Lemonade (feat. Gunna, Don Toliver and NAV) - Internet Money
Bit of a forgettable track. It’s okay, but feels like there’s a lot better like this out there.
92. These Days - Thelma Plum
First cover of the countdown. Still one of the best Hottest 100 number ones, and Thelma does it justice.
91. Charlie - Bugs
Second cover of the countdown. I do like this but I feel it doesn’t reach the same heights as the original.
90. No Time To Die - Billie Eilish
A little expected from Eilish but still a solid Bond song (the second in history to make it).
89. In Her Eyes - The Jungle Giants
I cannot wait for the new Jungle Giants album. They’ve gotten better and better with each release.
88. Heart Attack (feat. lau.ra) - BRONSON*
I fell deeply in love with this song the second I heard it. It just has this quiet yet strong emotion behind it. The production on it is something else as well.
87. Three Leaf Clover - Teenage Joans
A really solid debut single by the Unearthed High winners. Can’t wait to hear more from them.
86. Laugh Now Cry Now (feat. Lil Durk) - Drake
I still don’t get the hype for Drake. The falsetto “baby” in the chorus also never ceases to make me laugh.
85. Too Tough Terry - Dune Rats
Dunies slow descent from mature stoner pop to edgy tracks for teens has been hard to watch. This song just seems like a parody of the band.
84. Chicken Tenders - Dominic Fike
Has to be the sexiest song about the best thing in the frozen food section at the supermarket. Pity the album didn’t live up to the hype.
83. Down For You - Cosmo’s Midnight and Ruel
I was really keen for this once I heard about the collaboration between the two. Unfortunately it felt a little too much like a Ruel song and it doesn’t really feel like Cosmo’s Midnight had much of a touch on it.
82. The Clap - The Chats
It’s a bit generic for The Chats but I just like hearing them get more popular. Just hilarious dudes.
81. Weightless - Spacey Jane
One of the stronger and more unique tracks on Sunlight. The synth touches really suit the band.
80. Freaks - FISHER
Cannot wait for FISHER to just slowly fade away. His tracks all sound the same and are so basic.
79. my future - Billie Eilish
One of the best tracks Eilish has released. Love how this just turns halfway through from a really soft ballad to a bit of an electro pop song.
78. Lady Marmalade - G Flip
It’s a nice cover. The video of G Flip performing it though is really fun.
77. House Arrest - Sofi Tukker and Gorgon City
This song bangs pretty hard. I like a lot of Sofi Tukker have really been putting out some solid stuff.
76. Baby It’s You - London Grammar
This is a great track, that synth in the chorus is heavenly.
75. Photo ID - Remi Wolf
I do like this song but it reminds me of a track from the 80s or 90s and I can’t put my finger on what that track is.
74. Scream Drive Faster - LAUREL
When I first heard this I thought Ladyhawke was back in the mainstream. Little disappointed it wasn’t, but this slaps.
73. Don’t Need You - Genesis Owusu*
Possibly the best chorus of the year. Owusu has stepped up massively in the Australian Hip Hop scene.
72. Way Down - Ocean Alley
Ocean Alley have plateaued. ‘Lonely Diamond’ just felt like the band had become comfortable.
71. Obey - Bring Me The Horizon and YUNGBLUD
I just can’t take BMTH seriously anymore. They’re music has become so comically edgy.
70. Low - Chet Faker
Hey look, Nick Murphy has become Chet Faker again. Don’t know why he changes between the two when one is just slightly more soulful than the other, but he does release nice tunes.
69. Second - Hope D
I do like this female, Aussie version of Jamie T. It’s a really nice track. Also the number 69 is claimed by Hope D. haha.
68. Lie to Me - Vera Blue
I don’t know what it is exactly, but there’s something about Vera which just puts her on a different level than her counterparts. She’s just that consistently good.
67. Boss Bitch - Doja Cat
This track doesn’t get old for me. It’s so much fun, and Doja Cat owns it. Love it.
66. Fantasising - Skegss
This track really does have a very “Three Leaf Clover” vibe. I have enjoyed Skegss in the past but their new stuff hasn’t captured my attention really. Seems a bit run of the mill.
65. C’MON (feat. Travis Barker) - Amy Shark
I actually don’t mind this song, but why does it feature Travis Barker. It’s a piano ballad featuring a punk drummer, and he really doesn’t do that much. I’m confused, was he jealous of Mark Hoppus?
64. Soak Me In Bleach - The Amity Affliction
The song title reflects my thoughts when I hear that The Amity Affliction have released a new one. There are so many better Aussie metal bands out there.
63. Day & Age - Ball Park Music
BPM have a knack for writing amazing ballads. I wasn’t huge on their latest album, but tracks like this continue me having them in my good books.
62. Run - Joji
One of the best tracks Joji has released. A really mature song for the artist and a step in the right direction for him.
61. Pretty Grim - Ruby Fields
Ruby is good, but I feel she’s starting to release the same song over and over. Need something fresh.
60. Go (feat. Juice WRLD) - The Kid LAROI
Probably the strongest track by The Kid LAROI, but Juice WRLD outshines him just due to his vocal tone. He just sounds better.
59. Gimme Love - Joji
And that’s three for Joji. I really like how this song has two distinct sections and both are solid without overshadowing the other.
58. Fly Away - Tones and I
I still don’t get why Tones and I puts on that fake accent in her songs. It just detracts from what could be a nice pop song.
57. Sobercoaster - Beddy Rays
Really didn’t expect this to get so high. I’m happy though because it’s a really fun song.
56. On The Line - San Cisco
Tracks like this keep me invested in San Cisco. They can really release some brilliant stuff.
55. I Think You’re Great - Alex The Astronaut
The fine line between overly chessy and adorably optimistic is what Alex walks on with every track. I think this falls on the former side sadly.
54. Blue - Eiffel 65 (Flume Remix)
The fact that Flume puts so much of his identity into this remix is why Flume has been one of the most successful Aussie acts this past decade.
53. In Your Eyes - The Weeknd
If The Weeknd release ‘Blinding Lights’ a month later I’d believe that he would take out this countdown. He didn’t though and instead we are left with this solid track in the bottom 50.
52. The Glow - DMA’s
Why? Why did DMA’s have to get so poppy and generic. I loved their first two album, but I struggled to get through the third.
51. Your Love (Déjà Vu) - Glass Animals
Out of the three big hits the band had in 2020, this is the most underrated. There is so much going on here, yet it never feels muddled. Wavey Davey on fire here.
50. Nothing To Love About Love - Peking Duk and The Wombats
Although this is a nice song, there’s been so many 80s electro pop throwbacks recently that have been done better that this collab just fades into the background.
49. Wishing Well - Juice WRLD
This song is so beautiful and heart-breaking. Really shows why Juice WRLD became such a beloved artist so quickly.
48. Ain’t It Different (feat. AJ Tracey and Stormzy) - Headie One
This is a really cool collab. They use the Red Hot Chili Peppers sample so well and really flow so well with it that it feels almost effortless.
47. Animals - Architects
I like a lot about this track, but the chorus really hits another level. Feels cathartic to scream along to.
46. Pretty Lady - Tash Sultana
Was hoping Tash would move into a more psychedelic direction with their newer stuff, but this is still a fine track.
45. as long as you care - Ruel
A pretty by the books Ruel song, but he really does this style so well.
44. You & I - G Flip
Probably G Flips strongest release this year. The chorus has a lot of flavour.
43. together - Ziggy Alberts
Generic acoustic track by generic Byron Bay artist. He really took the cake this year for dumbest comparison, when he compared wearing a face mask to the holocaust. Thought he’d suffer a bit for it, but apparently his fanbase grew stronger.
42. WHATS POPPIN - Jack Harlow
Jack Harlow is just so much fun. He’s killing it, and WHATS POPPIN is proof of that. Keep the bangers coming Harlow.
41. I Still Dream About You - The Smith Street Band
I felt I was growing out of The Smith Street Band, their newer music just not resonating to me. Then they drop this and make me a big fan again.
40. Come & Go (with Marshmello) - Juice WRLD
Just that chorus. It is so enjoyable. He really was going places.
39. Righteous - Juice WRLD
A back to back, and from one of the more exciting songs on the album we get to one of the more sombre tracks. Everything from the guitar, the vocals, those synth notes. . . this track is just a perfect send off for the artist. R.I.P. Juice.
38. Parasite Eve - Bring Me The Horizon
This song is so unironically cringe and edgy that it somehow becomes ironically fun. It does the full circle.
37. SO DONE - The Kid LAROI
I do like The Kid LAROI, but his vocals on this, combined with the lyrics, just make him sound like a child chucking a temper tantrum. It does make me laugh though.
36. forget me too (feat. Halsey) - Machine Gun Kelly
If this song was released in the early 00s (where it belongs), it would’ve faded into oblivion. At least Halsey sounds pretty solid on her verse though.
35. Running Red Lights (feat. Rivers Cuomo & Pink Siifu) - The Avalanches*
My personal number one for the year. This song has that melancholic, nostalgic feel to it that just hits home every time. Also one of Cuomo’s strongest vocal performances.
34. Everybody Rise - Amy Shark
This song is fine. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it, but it’s fun to sing-a-long to.
33. Breathe Deeper - Tame Impala
One of the best tracks from The Slow Rush. I love that piano motif throughout, and the bass is so funky. That weird bridge section towards the end is also pretty slick.
32. Criminals - DMA’s
The real criminals are the ones who told DMA’s this was a good idea. I just can’t get around their new stuff. I miss ‘Hill’s End’ and ‘For Now’.
31. Reasons - San Cisco
Tracks like this keep me from becoming a full time fan of San Cisco. They can really release some average stuff.
30. Bagi-la-m Bargan (feat. Fred Leone) - Birdz
Powerful. Birdz really took it to another level here.
29. Dribble - Sycco
Although I find there’s a lot of similar stuff out there, I think Sycco does sound like an original voice in the Australian music scene. She’s killing it.
28. Straightfaced - Spacey Jane
Although there was a lot of good stuff on Spacey Jane’s debut album, I found it to be quite repetitive. This track was one of the ones that I found to fade into the background instead of standing out.
27. Under the Thunder - Skegss
I really want to like Skegss, they’ve released some great tunes in the past. But this just doesn’t do it for me. It’s just boring.
26. No Plans To Make Plans - Lime Cordiale
Everything that makes new The Rubens tracks so average is presented here on a Lime Cordiale track. Obnoxiously quirky.
25. Reality Check Please - Lime Cordiale
Hey back to back Lime Cordiale tracks. And another one of their weaker ones. ‘Addicted to the Sunshine’ did this chorus better.
24. Blue World - Mac Miller
Didn’t expect this to make it so high but so well deserved. This song slaps hard but still continues the tragic story that is presented on his posthumous album ‘Circles’.
23. Good News - Mac Miller*
Back to back Mac! To be honest, I am close to tears every time this track plays. If only the lyrics “there's a whole lot more for me waiting/I know maybe I'm too late, I could make it there some other time/Then I'll finally discover/That it ain't that bad” were told to Mac before his passing, because he did have so much more to offer. R.I.P. Mac.
22. Complicated - Eves Karydas
This song is so good. I’ve heard it that many times but it still hasn’t lost its shine. So damn good.
21. Energy - KLP and Stace Cadet
I was really hoping this would crack top 20. Probably the best Dance track of the year. Such a jam.
20. Addicted To The Sunshine - Lime Cordiale
Despite thinking that ‘14 Steps To A Better Living’ didn’t have many new tracks that were that good on it, this one is nice. It’s just a pleasantly nice song.
19. You Should Be Sad - Halsey
I really don’t like Pop Country music but I also find it hilarious that the genre cracked the top 20. ‘09 Taylor Swift would be proud.
18. Tangerine - Glass Animals
With Tik Tok exploding in 2020 I don’t get how this didn’t get adopted by someone on it. It’s so primed to get hyped on it.
17. Is It True - Tame Impala
I think Kevin Parker’s vocals on this are underwhelming, but that might just be because the instrumental slaps that hard. The rhythm section is so tight.
16. Screw Loose - Lime Cordiale
This sound is what Lime Cordiale do best. We need more dub influence and less elevator pop influence.
15. Skin - Spacey Jane
No matter what you think about Spacey Jane, they sure do make some emotional tracks. One of the most powerful songs on Sunlight.
14. Tombstone - Ocean Alley
The verses are average and pretty bland but the chorus is amazing. Just don’t think the album resonated with me too much, and Tombstone is another mixed track off it.
13. Rockstar - Mallrat
Possibly Mallrat’s best song yet. Her laid back, relaxed style mixed with the low-fi production really meshes well.
12. Get on the Beers (feat. Dan Andrews) - Mashd N Kutcher
I’m not going to pretend this is my style, but the way this has resonated with Australians during lockdown last year makes the track way smarter than it deserves to be. It’s both ironically and unironically good.
11. On Our Own - Lime Cordiale
I’m happy the three best new tracks of Lime Cordiale’s debut were the highest placing in this countdown. This really is a nice song.
10. Therefore I Am - Billie Eilish
Not my favourite songs from Billie but she continues to be consistently good. The production on this is immense as well.
9. I’m Good? - Hilltop Hoods
I wish old school Hilltop could hear this so could prevent themselves every going this direction. Aussie Hip Pop is not a good genre. This is one of their worst tracks yet.
8. Sending Me Ur Loving - The Jungle Giants*
This song has so much flavour too it. It’s so funky and fun and the production is so tight. Also the guitar work is underrated here, not doing much but adding that icing on the cake.
7. Hyperfine - G Flip
Every time I hear this track (and I’ve heard it a lot) I completely forget about it a couple minutes later. G Flip is good, but this is forgettable.
6. WAP (feat. Megan Thee Stallion) - Cardi B
I understand if this isn’t your style, but I love it. I don’t think there’s ever been a song with so many quotable moments. Every line makes a statement that will get in your head. My personal favourite? “ I let him taste it, now he diabetic”.
5. Lost In Yesterday - Tame Impala
There’s a lot of songs on ‘The Slow Rush’ I like, but Lost In Yesterday I’ve always found kinda boring. It feels a little uninspired. Surprised that this was the album’s big hit.
4. Cherub - Ball Park Music*
BPM have released some great music over the decade but I think this is their best yet. It’s beautiful, emotional and has a fantastic, cathartic breakdown at the end. I love a good build up.
3. The Difference (feat. Toro y Moi) - Flume*
Everything about this track is why Flume has been so great for so long. This track is great for any situation. If I’m partying, I play it. If I’m relaxing, I play it. If I’m getting pumped up, I play it. If I’m sad, I play it. Flexibility matters.
2. Booster Seat - Spacey Jane
OHHH-OH-OHHHHHHHH AND IT FEELS LIKE THAT AGAIN! One of the best sing-a-long tracks of the year, yet massively emotional. Like damn this song is rough.
1. Heat Waves - Glass Animals*
If I had one word to express how I feel about this winning I would say “deserved”. Not many tracks were as perfect for 2020 as this one. Glass Animals love writing absolute bangers with emotional cores and this one is one of their strongest tracks. Glass Animals just continue to outdo themselves.
That’s it for now, gonna maybe start posting again. I dunno. See how I feel. Ta-ta.
Swordtember - 6. Snow
“I lost track of this one some time ago, it seems. Hm. This is not the one I gave The Hail to.”
The white-scaled humanoid releases the third arrow of their less-than-successful hunting trip, relief finding them as the ice-blue arrowhead meets the fur and flesh of the snowy fox in the distance. They stow the frost-covered bone longbow over their shoulder as the animal flees, content with the meal that the blood trail promises. The small cave that they call home is damp and dim, yet their vertically-slit pupils disregard the darkness comfortably. They waste no time once they’ve squeezed their way in, endeavouring to cover the low-down entrance with way too many rocks, blocking the icy winds from blowing in. The act takes too much energy, they know that, but they struggle to care once they begin skinning. It keeps their mind distracted well enough to mostly forget about the rest of the hunt, where they managed to scare away some four-legged animal that they don’t remember the name of. They discard the skin to the side and set the body down into the small fire pit that’s gone long unused - the figure doesn’t know much, but one thing they learnt well is to not light a fire in a cave like this. They gained first-hand experience, and still dream at times of that freezing night, where hundreds of little insects rained down from the cave’s roof to escape the smoke. Instead of repeating that horrifying mistake, they take a deep breath in and gather a small mote of heat within their throat, letting it grow and grow until small wisps of smoke eek out of their nostrils and they’re forced to let it escape. Similar but highly unlike what their long-lost kin once did, the figure unleashes a concentrated stream of flame from their lips. Minutes later they consume the charred fox, bones and all. Content. They recall the name of the four-legged animal that they spooked a few days prior. A wolf. Normally, they’d be happy with themselves at the realisation, but in the moment, where there’s more of those animals than they can count surrounding them, they disregard the thought of a self-congratulatory smile. The wolves continue to encircle, the figure slowly considering reaching for the bow over their shoulder.  The freezing air does little to dissuade the figure’s internal heat, nor to weaken the flames that are forced to billow from their mouth - they hope it was wolves that hated fire. They swing around quickly so that flame may surround them entirely, using the distraction to pull free the perpetually frost-covered bow from their shoulder.  The smallest of the pack is on them before they get the chance to nock an arrow, forcing them to instead jam the arrow downward, followed quickly by their boot onto its neck. The attempt at nocking the second arrow goes much more smoothly, but as they raise their bow, they realise how hopeless it is, that the moment they loose an arrow, all the remaining beasts will converge.  They instead aim to the clouds above and fire. In that miniscule moment before the arrow escapes into the endless sky above, the frost that the figure had always known to cover the bone of the bow extends itself forward, unnaturally joining with the arrow shaft and leaving a shrill mist behind as it flies upward. It’s lost beyond the clouds, and the predators take the opening in stride, as expected - two of them manage to take the figure down quickly, tearing away at the scaled-flesh of their meal’s forearms. The sharp breaking of air, followed quickly by a sickening thud, and whine. Then, another. The figure manages to lift themselves up, throwing a now lifeless wolf off of them as they do so, just in time to watch the source of the noise in work. A tiny ball of ice, shooting down from the sky impossibly quick to puncture another wolf’s skull. By the time they reaffirm their grip on the bow and nock another arrow, four more wolves have fallen.
“I know not the creature who has taken my gift as their own. A bastard, unknown even by me, born from that dragon of ice... I wonder, do they know they carry a rib of their mother? Hm. I will allow them to keep it for a time. It feels only right.”
Chapter 7 - Lunch Date With My Victim 7.2. The Beginning Of A Bittersweet Friendship
‘Ah, finally!’ Kibi thought after slamming the door at Legoshi’s face, leaving him behind to get the roses for the Drama Club’s New Student Welcome Event. ‘I want to be as far from her as possible…’
As he was walking down the stairs, Kibi was thinking about the chat earlier that day between him and his two friends, Oryx, an antelope student, and Makoto, Mizuchi’s boyfriend.
‘Hey, Makoto, you’ve got some white fur on you’ Oryx said.
‘Really!? Where?’ Makoto asked.
‘Right here on your vest… and some here, too’ Oryx replied while taking small strings of fur off of the other’s vest.
‘Oh well… you see… the thing is… I had a date with this really cute dwarf rabbit’ Makoto said while giggling. He was kind of embarrassed after being caught red-handed, but he was still proud. Typical male behavior.
‘What?’ Kibi yelled in frustration. ‘Don’t you have a girlfriend?’
‘Yeah… So tell me, how are you the “best rare species couple” again?’ Oryx added.
‘You’re only saying that because you don’t know her! She’s really cute and she’s fun to talk to. She’s super refreshing and really sexy, too!’ Makoto replied to the attacks.
‘Now hold on a minute…’ Oryx said with a mysterious look on his face. ‘Is she in the Gardening Club?’
‘Well… I think so.’
‘Her body is pure white. Not a single stripe or mark.’
‘Umm… How do you know this?’ Makoto’s frustration started to grow.
‘She has a bad sleeping posture and when she’s done she makes sure to clean up the room before getting out.’
‘WHAT!? Did you sleep with her, too?’ Makoto felt his heart sink. He thought that he could finally find someone to spend quality time with just to get his hopes trampled on by someone else. And maybe not just one candidate…
‘Wow, so that makes sense. I bet she doesn’t care whether her targets are single or taken…’
‘You mean… she’s using other males as fodder, too? No wonder she seemed so experienced…’
The topic of the conversation made Kibi uncomfortable. He believed that such private matters are not to be discussed with others, even if those others are friends or family. He just wanted to leave but Oryx’s description of the rabbit girl stuck with him…
‘Fodder? Come on, she’s just a bunny’ he said.
‘Nope. That’s a good word. Once she catches you, she’ll swallow you whole and spit your bones out. You better watch yourself. Females like her are more savage than any carnivore could ever be.’
Those words resonated in Kibi’s head for a long time.
‘Well… I don’t think she’ll do any of that to a wolf. Especially not Legoshi…’ And with that, Kibi left the Gardening Club behind for good.
***
The cafeteria was packed with animals of all sizes. During afternoon hours, the cafeteria served as gathering and meeting point for students, enjoying cakes, coffee and other desserts, which were served. These items were not part of the daily menu but they were always available.
As Legoshi and Haru were standing in the line, they felt the many looks on them from others. It made them feel quite uncomfortable. They didn’t say a word to each other or others. The silence was almost deafening. It was Haru, who finally began to break down the wall between them.
‘So, what are you getting? Personally, I was thinking about getting a raspberry shake with some sweet berry and yogurt parfait.’ she said.
Legoshi looked at her kind of awkwardly. He felt uncomfortable by the looks around him. He didn’t quite know how to answer such a question. What should he ask for? Something he would like or something more preferable by herbivores to avoid scaring her? He looked at the menu again and carefully read it through.
‘What should I get? Cherry pies are too sticky for me and I’d just make a mess of myself… I don’t really like parfaits… Coffee makes my breath smell bad… Caramel-apple pies are too sweet… Key lime pies are kinda good, but this kitchen lady always burns the bottom of it… wait… They have egg sandwiches! Jackpot! And perhaps a glass of red berry juice!’
‘So?’ Haru asked with a curious look on her face, trying to figure out the thoughts of the wolf, who both seemed confused and annoyed at the same time.
‘Oh, sorry!’ Legoshi replied. ‘I totally zoned out. But I think I’ll get an egg sandwich and a glass of red berry juice. I hope me eating an egg sandwich in front of you isn’t offensive or anything to you.’
‘Don’t worry about that, I don’t mind carnivores eating foods like that. Plus, you need eggs for cakes and such, so…’ Haru said.
When it was their turn, Haru asked for their meals. The kitchen lady served them without a word but even she couldn’t help herself and send a judging look towards them.
‘I guess it’s unusual for others to see a large carnivore and a small herbivore having snacks together?’ Legoshi thought. They searched for a seat and then finally sat down near one of the giant oaks in the hall. With each passing student, they were disgusted expressions, or being gossiped about. It started to become frustrating for both of them…
‘Why don’t we get to know each other a little better to deter our minds from what others might be thinking about this whole situation of us eating together?’ Haru suggested.
‘That would be amazing’ Legoshi replied. He felt kind of nervous though. He had no idea how to have a proper conversation with others.
‘Awesome, you go first!’ Haru said.
Legoshi took a deep breath and began.
‘My name is Legoshi. I’m a grey wolf, as you can see, and I’m a second year student. I’m a stagehand in the Drama Club. I like…’
‘Wait!’ Haru interrupted. ‘This is not some sort of job interview or speed dating, take your time and don’t just throw information at me. Why don’t we take turns?’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Let me make an example. I’m Haru. I’m a third year Netherland dwarf rabbit and I’m the only member of the Gardening Club. I like taking care of plants and listening to music. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?’
‘Well… I don’t really know to be honest. I like bugs and reading weather reports. I’m really happy when they report about the possibility of rain.’
‘I see. And what do you like about insects?’
‘That they can’t hurt me like others. Most of them seem to like me because I’m trying to be as gentle to them as possible.’
‘I understand you. Sometimes others just hurt you or spread rumors about you just because you’re different from them.’
‘What kind of rumors are they spreading about you?’
‘It always changes. Gossip spreads among small animals like wildfires. But it doesn’t really bother me anymore. The latest is that I prey on male students to spend my nights with. I guess that’s a pretty good explanation as to why others are looking at us like that.’
‘I’m sorry about that. I can just go if this makes you uncomfortable…’
‘You don’t have to. I don’t care what they think about me. But enough of that. What do you do as a stage hand?’
‘Well, I take care of the lights and help out the costumes department. I also run errands the leaders ask me to do, like getting supplies, asking for help and such. I also do the cleaning most of the time since wolves’ vision is pretty good in the dark, so we can save money on the electric bill.’
‘That’s awesome. How does your night vision work? I’m usually blind in the dark.’
‘Well, I mostly see stuff as I see them in the light but they are a bit darker in color. I think that’s the easiest way to describe it.’
The conversation went on for a good few hours. Legoshi and Haru ended up having dinner together, too. They talked about school issues, common interests, likes and dislikes. They enjoyed their time together with quite a lot of laughing included. It was almost 8 pm when they realized how much they kept talking.
‘Goodness, look at the time!’ Haru said. ‘I honestly can’t remember when was the last time, I enjoyed myself with someone this much.’
‘Me too. It was nice getting to know you. But I have to run now. I have some homework to take care of. See you around’ Legoshi said while waving goodbye.
‘Bye, Legoshi’ Haru said with a smile. After a long time, she felt like she met a genuinely nice character. ‘There is still some good in this world. Don’t lose your light, Legoshi.’ she thought.
As Legoshi was leaving the cafeteria, he bumped into Kibi. He was still kind of frustrated after he used his excuse against him but he still felt a bit thankful so he could at least have a nice afternoon.
‘Hey, Legoshi!’ Kibi said. ‘I’m sorry I left you there. I was waiting for you to come back.’
‘Kibi… Why did you leave me there?’ Legoshi replied.
‘Before that, did anything happen?’
‘No, not really.’
‘Really? That’s good. So… The reason I was running down the stairs four steps at a time was because I was afraid of running into trouble.’
‘Well, there wasn’t any trouble, so what were you afraid of?’
‘Well, there’s this bunny who’s pretty famous around the herbivores. Apparently, she seduced many males and she’s really dangerous to be around… Basically, she’s a slut’ Kibi sighed. ‘Hard to believe, right? She looks so quiet, too… But hey, she wouldn’t try to make a move on a wolf, right? Did she say anything to you?’
Legoshi couldn’t believe what he just heard from Kibi. His words tasted like lead and were just as toxic. He couldn’t believe others would spread such rumors just because of someone being different. After a moment of thinking, he answered.
‘She did. She told me that she really cares about her flowers… She treats them like her own children. I want to talk to the stage crew to suggest getting the flowers from some place else. I think she has some issues, but she is a nice girl if you get to know her a little more. But I have to go now. Bye!’
With that, Legoshi left Kibi behind, who just couldn’t quite process Legoshi’s words. He couldn’t believe how mature he acted despite his young age. He stared after him as the wolf was slownly disappearing in the crowd.
