call me a dumbass furry werewolf otherkin faggot but I genuinely don't think queer people having genders tied to their nonhumanity is a bad thing at all. it has no impact on whether or not we're actually. oppressed. or not, so why not let us talk about how our elf or dragon or wolf or cat or whatever nonhuman identities affect our genders, who cares lol

Person ≠ Human = Person
(For clarity, that title should be read as "Person does not equal Human equals Person".)
I've seen a fair few posts over the years I've been involved in the community where someone gets upset by the use of "people" as an umbrella term, generally also claiming that "person" refers exclusively to humans, and therefore the term excludes non-humans.
That is wrong, and it shows that there is a very important conversation that should be happening but isn't.
First thing's first, [this] is the Wikipedia article on "Personhood". I'm going to recommend reading it in full, but if you don't have time or don't want to, the most relevant parts for this are the opening paragraphs (up to the "Philosophy" header) and the sub-headings "Non-human animals" and "Hypothetical beings", both under the "Debates" heading. Those sections should provide some insight into what I'm going to be talking about here, and give you an idea of that conversation that should be happening.
With that out of the way, let's talk about what it means to be a "person", and why it's wrong to claim that it's synonymous with "human". The state of being a "person" (that is, personhood) is less of a biological classification and more of a social one. A person is someone who is deserving of basic rights and decency, which I would hope we can all agree is not a category exclusive to humans. Exactly where the line between "person" and "non-person" lies has been debated extensively for a very, very long time, but there is at least one solid standard that everyone should be able to agree with:
A person is a sapient, thinking being capable of recognizing itself as being a person.
If you are reading this right now, I'm going to assume that you meet that definition, which makes you a person, and that is a good thing. It means you are a being which deserves basic rights like the ability to engage with society, own property, and exercise your free will. Saying you're not a "person" because you're non-human is saying that you shouldn't get to enjoy those basic rights, and that you should not be included in society and allowed to act as an independent being.
All humans are people, but that does not mean that all people are human. And it's worth noting that declaring categories of humans as not being people has been an important part of excusing the removal of basic rights from them. You see it in the way that slaves were talked about prior to the practice being outlawed, and in the way that fascists talk about the groups that they think should be killed en masse. Declaring those groups as not being "people" dehumanizes them, not because being a person means being human, but because being human means also being a person.
There very clearly needs to be an ongoing conversation in the community about non-human personhood, because it is a topic with a long history, with strong points made in favour of including all manner of non-humans under the umbrella of "person". This ongoing trend of declaring oneself to not be a person because of non-humanity is, put bluntly, foolish at best and actively dangerous at worst. Everyone has personhood. It came free with your being a sapient being, capable of thought and self-reflection.
And bonus conversation topic: The reason that anti-kin and related groups do the whole, "Oh, you're not human? Does that mean I can treat you like an animal?" bit is because they don't see non-humans as having personhood. Consider how it would affect how they approach our communities if they were open to the concept of non-human personhood, and how that could further benefit the community as a whole.
Discuss.

dont think this post is worded great, im pretty tired but i wanted to get my thoughts out here anyway
okay here i go:
i think in a lot of cases where folk think therians and alterhumans are faking or not being 100% genuine about their experiences or linking things that are unrelated together, they generalise quite a lot and don't take things like instincts and even just psychological therians/alterhumans into consideration
lets take the example of (were)wolves and 'edgy' aesthetics, those things may not be directly correlated, but if a big reason for you being kin of a were(wolf) is that you used it as a survival/coping mechanism, you may also relate to 'edgy' aesthetics, or more specifically, feel like it fits your were(wolf) instincts because of a strong drive to bite, attack and defend etc
so many times i see folk saying "but that's unrelated" and like, yes, sort of, but its not up to you whether folk enjoy those themes and relate them to their kintypes
i really wish folk in this community (especially younger therians/alterhumans) would realise and keep in mind the effect imprinting, neurodivergence, and other psychological causes has on the community
not everyone has a past life, or memories, and sometimes folk will use arbitrary things to relate to their kintypes
that doesn't make their experience less real, it doesn't make them less of a therian or alterhuman, it just is.

For at least as long as I’ve been involved in nonhuman communities, there’s always kind of been this emphasis on not just identifying as nonhuman but also being able to accurately label that identity under the massive amounts of terms that exist to describe every variation in personal experience one can have. Hearted identities were seemingly given the “middle child treatment” and experiences like flickers or links or even frequent cameo shifts were often harshly criticized. And while I’m glad to see much of that has changed now, there is still quite a bit of label pushing and a hierarchy of experiences.
Before I distanced myself from the therian community, I was a frantic mess trying to label everything and anything I experienced just to feel some validation among my peers. I lost sight of who I really was deep down because my focus was more on the labels and how to fit them than my actual lived experiences. Now though, I feel so much relief and confidence in my identities that I hardly ever question or doubt myself anymore. Not having a billion words to juggle around stresses you out a lot less, trust me.
All this is not to say I don’t sometimes like to have words to describe my experiences though! Specifically as of late, I’ve been questioning what the squirrel means to me. I sat with the possibility of being squirrelhearted for a bit, but that just doesn’t seem right; squirrels don’t feel anywhere near the same as bears, coyotes and Twilight for me. It occurred to me though that whenever I see squirrels, or objects and art depicting them, I immediately think of my daemon. Her tiny voice in the back of my mind squeaks with excitement at recognizing herself, the same way I do when I see a wolf. “It’s me”, she says, “it’s Philomena”, I say. I get this warm, aching feeling in my stomach like I just have to have the object, that I just have to be with my daemon in the physical.
So I wondered what I could call this feeling, an almost hearted adjacent experience. And I remembered the word I “coined” for such things as this - and many other types of feelings of being drawn to something -: Calling.
Squirrels call to me because of Philomena. I like them because they remind me of my squirrel-girl. I like watching their movements because it helps me visualize Philomena. I feel drawn to squirrels because they make me feel closer to her. They bring her to the front of my mind and briefly give us back some closeness to each other that we’ve lost recently. Without Philomena, squirrels don’t mean much to me. It’s only because she’s a red squirrel do I feel an affinity with them.
Calling definitely feels like a good fit

thinking thoughts about my kintype. i think i’m dogkin AND werewolf? in the sense of they’re separate but also connected.
i live life as a dog, but on occasion (not rare but not frequent) i’m much more wild and larger(?) than myself as i am normally. i think its:
dog->were-dog-wolf-thing->dog again
dog that’s a werewolf?

Icons of the humans of the main party, in their Were forms!
Along with Zahalkro, these four make up the main team we'll follow in Stars Below. In order, they are Madeline, Target, Charlotte, and Atlas. Madeline is the leader, Target is currently the best human at psionics as well as a good case study for the Were phenomenon in the first place, Charlotte is best at being a weapon-wielding brute, and Atlas... can drive a sharkmarine.
Charlotte is Zahalkro's Tether, and Target and Atlas also seem to be Tethers for missing Vani.

Otherkin Discord Coven
Hey all! Just wanted to advertise the new Coven Discord!
This discord is specifically for Vampires, Vampire Familiars, Ghosts, Undead, Werewolves (+ other weres), Demons, Angels, and Dragons. These are the specific groups this discord is made for. We feel like these kins are underrepresented and we would just like to make a community for these kins!
I know its a little cringe that I'm advertising a discord server but I would really like to have a nice community for these kins.
In this server we are also a practicing witch/vampire coven and we'd like to include the above listed kins into our group. We host talks, classes, tips, streams, movie nights, vcs, and game nights. We have pluralkit and tupperbox for systems as well. Nontraumagenic systems are not welcome (sorry). This is a safe space please no drama.
I would really appreciate it if you join! There is a verification process so please don't just join and do nothing T-T. Can't wait to see you all there!

The wlw characters i ship always have about 0 chances of becoming canon and i was all fine and good and accepting of this (fanfiction exists i could survive) until like 3 of them fucking became canon, so now i am staring at my other ships expecting them to do this same, like no bestie, my guy, those were the outliers, those were not the beginning of the gay revolution you so desperately want, i would go feral if they do and i am going feral as they do not, this is my villain origin story

For those who identify as nonhuman but not therian/otherkin/alterhuman
if you feel comfortable, regardless of your choice, please explain your choice and your personal beliefs. I'm literally so curious as to how nonhumans (besides those who use therian, otherkin or alterhuman labels) view themselves and how they perceive their identities.
Nonhuman spaces are so heavily therian/'kin that it's hard to find others who don't perceive themselves that way.
