"Laidback/Dilligent" stat is a bit confusing to me.

Perhaps it's a matter of different perspectives, but for me, refusing to just surrender the reins to someone and keeping quiet when doing so is detrimental because someone said so feels more like job dilligence (not wanting to let someone else do your job for you, wanting your voice to be heard and keeping communication open and being a team player instead of passively waiting orders and just nodding along) than MC being "laidback".

Can you please elaborate on this stat plesae?

Sure! Let's begin with how I understand it.

The MC works for the police, a local government organization where security and its implementation are regulated by protocol. In this line of work, protocol is everything.

The role of a detective offers more opportunities and responsibilities compared to that of an officer, but both are primarily obligated to operate within the framework of protocol, where obeying superiors comes first.

And the federal agents are even higher up in the chain of command, which I think is obvious to everyone (but that's not the reason why R reacts so negatively if you choose to speak up, but you'll have a chance to ask about it later).

Though I haven't worked for the police myself, I did have experience working at an airport.

It's hardly the same, but following protocol is the basic foundation with any job where security is the primary objective.

At the same time, in the difficult and stressful situations, sometimes minor infractions are overlooked because getting the job done is the priority.

Based on that and my experience, I've categorized employees' work methods into two groups: the diligent and the laidback, each with its pros and cons.

Diligent employees strictly follow protocol, often appearing rigid at work. They can be difficult to work with, especially in stressful situations.

The prefect example is K, but even K sometimes had to make difficult decisions that violated protocol because this kind of work is affected by the human factor and it's unpredictable, no matter how well prepared you are.

Laidback employees are more focused on the task at hand. They are more considerate and can overlook some of the regulations because there is a task that needs to be accomplished.

In the case of the MC, both approaches can be seen as effective, just in different ways.

So it's not a "win or lose" stat. It serves to give me a sense of how you play your MC in the workplace, and adjust the narrative and characters reactions accordingly.

Perhaps I should rename this stat to "protocol-oriented" and "task-oriented" for clarity.

I didn't name it as such only because it affects not only the work process, but also the MC's behavior during it (more strict and more laidback), at least this observation comes from my experience.

But maybe I'll make a poll later to make it easier for me to decide.

Update 26/04 - 2024

Hey everyone!

Here's the writing update for April. I've finished the first drafts of 2 backgrounds (aristocrat and nomad) and written a little less than half or so of the final background (scavenger).

This month hasn't been the best one writing-wise. My old laptop broke down and I lost a few hours worth of progress due to a saving-related issue. I've also struggled with writer's block and it was only around yesterday it started to ease up. It's frustrating to deal with, but something everyone who writes will likely encounter at some point or another. I try to remind myself of that when I feel like I'm not doing enough. Since writing has felt smoother yesterday and today, I'm hoping that I can finish up the first drafts completely by the end of April/beginning of May.

Things are slowly coming together and I'm just happy to be in a place where I'm in more of a flow again.

I plan to release 1 or 2 more character portraits in May and post another writing snippet along with more information about each background. I'm also working on answering some asks that I've left as drafts for now since they require more long and thought-out answers.

Platonic Options

I'm debating on whether to add in platonic relationships with the ROs or not and would love to hear some thoughts on this!

Initially, when writing the synopsis I did include platonic options where the player character doesn't have to be romantically involved with a RO to go through the story, but the more I flesh the plot out, the more I find that it would be hard to incorporate that in considering the endings are all dependent on which character you're in a relationship with and how other ROs react to that.

I wanted to make it simple by replacing intimate parts with platonic interactions but I feel that it wouldn't make much sense, and a bit jarring to make the plot of a platonic and a romantic relationship completely the same.

If demand for the platonic options is high, I think I would make a new ending, however, it wouldn't follow the normal route, where you basically follow the RO with the highest affection around, but instead, you would get a "true" route where your decisions aren't affected by the ROs at all.

But then again, you would only really get 1 (technically 2) platonic ending instead of 16 total romantic endings and that seems a bit boring to me. Let me know your thoughts :)

The Garden Sanctuary is an 18+ horror, lesbian romance, and erotica interactive fiction. It takes place in a world built in Gaslamp Fantasy, with Art-Deco and 1920s influences. It is planned to be a browser-based visual novel style experience, with multiple illustrations and CGs placed throughout.

CONTENT WARNING: The Garden Sanctuary is a HORROR and EROTICA interactive fiction. MC: Mikhail Ilyushin - The Composer - They/Them

Mikhail Ilyushin was raised in one of the many churches of Vilyuchka who follow the single god of Lithos. From birth they were seen as sick, in body and mind alike. Thus they were sheltered from the rest of society in an attempt to protect their frailty from the outside world. During their time in the church they would occupy their dark upbringing with their passion for music. Mikhail had given up on the prospects of freedom. Until one day their overbearing family was contacted by a mysterious sponsor, who was somehow able to convince them to allow Mikhail to attend the University of Saint Yelena in order to pursue becoming a professional composer.

RO: Watcher Uriel - Patron of Pestilence - He/She/They

Watcher Uriel, the cursed angel forced to live on the outskirts of the city. Their very existence brings sickness. Her appearance is gruesome, no matter how hard she tries to mask her true form under a mortal glamor. In spite of the nature of their very existence, they long for only one thing: Love and affection. They are the head of a fanatic cult, obsessed with finding love for their holy angel. Nonetheless Watcher Uriel remains on the ceaseless hunt to find a soulmate. No matter the cost.

RO: Lucia Blackhart - The Violet Songstress - She/Her

Perhaps one of your only hopes of learning what the life of a composer entails. Lucia is not only a prolific melodist herself, she's also an extremely elusive detective. The catch: she only works with criminals in the Vilyuchkan Underbelly. Her allegiances are never set in stone. And while her services are invaluable, you can never fully set your trust in the Violet Songstress. Bonus Route: Because of her good natured relationship with Caim, it is possible to pursue a polyamorous route between the two of them.

RO: Caim - The Wonderland Ensemble, one of the Five Kings of the Vilyuchkan Underbelly - They/Them

Caim is a demonic being who surfaced in Vilyuchka many decades ago. Since then they have founded the Wonderland Ensemble, a ruthless crime syndicate known for its equal worship of pleasure and pain. Caim is an absolutely ruthless criminal, earning them the title of one of the Five Kings; a designation for the most dangerous and esteemed crime bosses in the Vilyuchkan Underbelly. Bonus Route: Because Caim is great friends with Lucia Blackhart, it is possible to pursue a polyamorous route between both of them.

RO: Headmaster Stelliana - Beholder of the Moon - She/Her

Headmaster Stelliana is the only companion you will meet on your journey that has the privilege of participating in regular society. She's a highly respected scholar, and lead of the academic group known as the Beholders of the Moon. Though she just poses as an intellectual elite, she holds a dark secret. Her and her fellow Beholders are apart of a cult seeking to resurrect the Old Gods. Only she and her fellow scholars know what this entails, and what fate this may bring about.

Something about this presence seems familiar. Yet foreign. I can feel my heart pounding against my ribcage. Is it fear, or is it fiery yearning that I feel? Nonetheless something inside of me burns. Threatening to sear through my sternum and breach the skin along my breast. Until we meet again.

The demo will be published around may 15th 2024, and will include the entire prologue, in which the player will be able to fully customise the main character and be introduced to the world of the story.

Florence Hawthorne (F), 20 years old, “Enemies to lovers.” You’ve attended a private school with her; once, Florence Hawthorne was the favoured among all of the young ladies you knew at the time, extremely talented in many arts and languages, and rumoured to be the most eligible candidate for the royal first born and heir to the Empire. And yet, from what you’ve heard as of recently, the young baroness has been considered disgraced, ‘tainted’ — though you’ve yet to hear the whole story — and no longer holds the reputation required to look down on you as she once did. Physical description: Medium in height, with long, silky black hair, green eyes and a feminine figure. The queen of elegance at its finest.

Nadir Anwar (M), 28 years old, “Forbidden romance.” You’d never heard of him before your arrival in London; Nadir Anwar, ambassador to the Khedivate of Egypt and the viceroy’s son, has been at court for a while now. You’ve also heard that his position and permanence in England may be the result of a punishment — for what, no one seems to be certain. The court repeatedly hounds him for marriage proposals, though you suspect it may be to gain more status and political advantage with the royal family. Not that it matters, for it seems every proposal coming his way faces a brutal rejection. Physical description: Tall, with short, ruffled dark brown hair, grey eyes and a masculine figure. Dresses as modestly as his position allows him.

Golden retriever. Gentle. Nice RO.

You meet Osric on the night you are kidnapped, and ever since, Osric has been a brother figure to you. He is one of the few people you can trust with your life, honest, gentle, yet without his own complications. But above all, he is sincere.

Louisa Grimaldi [F]

Black cat. Manipulative. Red flag.

Louisa is your childhood friend, however, the divide between your social status, with hers one tier higher causes a strain in between your relationship. It does not help that her family is deeply involved in the dark den (like black market). For guy pc, Louisa never considers marrying you, instead pursuing Hamlin, yet she cannot hide her attraction towards you (depends on choices), even going as far as consenting to her suitor's assassination (depends on choice). Beware romancing her, as she would not hesitate to cut you off for benefits.

Hamlin Davenport [M]

Tsundere. Difficult. Red flag.

Interestingly enough, Hamlin is the suitor Louisa considers marrying. You can meet Hamlin in multiple instances, changing the dynamics between you two. He is the duke of Osborne, the best way to describe his love language is empty, or at best fickle (depends on choices).

Anika [F]

Golden retriever. Warm. High morality.

Anika is a member of the rebellion, you can meet her in multiple instances and change the dynamics between the two of her. Her personality best resembles Osric, with the difference that her morality is more black and white than Osric's. She is one of the more dynamic characters in this wip.

Enforcer Morcant [M]

Stern, callous. Detached friendliness. Highly ordered.

An enforcer that came to investigate the disappearance of your mother, and her recorded visit to the rumored city of San Kiara where multiple murders are happening. He appears amiable and courteous on the surface, but your interactions with him tells you, his core is not at all that gentle.

Eira [F]

Corrupt, frank, red flag.

Lover of money and anything precious. She was the one who trafficked you after your father threw you away.

Sanchia F

Coy, gentle, manipulative, fickle

A girl you rescued on the road from a group of vile men, she tags along on your journey, as she does not possess a temporary home or job having been abandoned by her family. Much like how your father abandoned you.

Started working on next chapter, on route where you enter the scene with Osric and without Anika. Triggered by meeting Anika in dark den and going behind the cave with Osric in bandit escape.

Headmaster Stelliana - Beholder of the Moon - She/Her Pronouns - Honored Vilyuchkan Scholar

Headmaster Stelliana is the high priest of the academic circle known as The Beholders of the Moon. She is the only companion you will meet on your journey that can blend in with the whims of regular society. In fact, she is an extremely honored scholar at the University of Saint Yelena, even being an official member of it's schoolboard.

But underneath all of her respect and honor, and the merits of the Beholders, lies a sinister secret. In reality the Beholders are a collective group of Mad Scholars obsessed with the revival of the Old Gods. They pose as the elite academics of Vilyuchka in order to receive funding and acceptance. Despite their strange goals and enigmatic natures the intelligence of the beholders knows no bounds. Their minds can not be bound in any mortal capacity.

"Headmaster Stelliana is rather flat and unreadable. Though do not mistake her lack of emotion for coldness. She's analytical and precise, yes, but she is also incredibly polite. She doesn't carry herself with any sort of pretension, nor does she assume anyone she meets is below her intelligence. Instead, she finds great value in the many forms of intellect that mortal culture holds.

She also prides herself on hospitality. She believes a good first impression can cement the fate of any relationship. Stelliana loves to get to know new people over a cup of tea and a few finger sandwiches.

Despite this though, she has a penchant for keeping secrets. Her true motives can be hard to pin down, even amongst other Beholders."
