Also!! I bring ask for the chatfic au!
What kind of outfits/styles do the gang have going on? And what are their pfps?
Wah! I don't really know fashion and clothes, but I'll do my best!
Godwyn dresses really simple most of the time. Just jeans and a t-shirt and he's good to go. Sometimes he'll add a jacket. His pfp is a headshot of him smiling.
Ranni mostly does business casual, usually light colours and she'll always jump on the chance to wear long coats. Her pfp is a blurry pic of her falling on her ass, taken by Tiche.
Rykard is usually in his old work clothes for the forge, but sometimes will wear a fitting suit. His pfp is a picture of Rya holding Sniffy. Sniffy is sniffing her nose.
Radahn has the cowboy look. That's it. The most stereotypical idea of a cowboy look that you can imagine? That's him. His pfp changes every couple of days, but it is always a new picture of Leonard.
Blaidd would love nothing more than spend his days in track pants and hoodies, but unfortunately Ranni made him part of the company so now he has to wear suits and look all sleek. He hates every minute of it and always changes out of them the moment he gets home. His pfp is an old picture of the whole Rennala family.
Tiche usually wears suits at work (and drives Ranni crazy), but her preferred clothes are leather jackets and ripped jeans (that also drive Ranni crazy). Her pfp is her and Ranni bumping heads to fit in the frame.
Miquella is pyjama man. He has some comfy clothes for when he's on the field, as well as medical attire and a single suit that he uses when he has to talk face to face to "iMpOrTaNt" people to ask them to please act humane ffs. His pfp is a picture of the earth with paper people holding hands and circling the globe.
Malenia is content with track pants and hoodies, really. They are comfy, let her workout whenever she gets the urge and they are soft and nice. If she wants to put effort in for dates, she switches to jackets and crop tops. Her pfp (for now) is a close up of the hilt of her favourite sword.
Meli thinks fashion is cool coats. That's it. The rest of the fit can be whatever feels nice. Fanny packs usually make the fit too. In summer, if she's in the city she might wear a sundress or something similarly flow-y and light. She still will be carrying a decently sized backpack though. Her pfp is a closeup of her holding someone's hand. Not saying whose ;)
This was fun! <3

happy 5th anniversary to “want,” the song and music video of all time. and happy 5th anniversary to me too, for becoming a taemin fan :) i was on the other side of the globe at the time, and i don’t know how or where, but i saw the want teaser photos, more precisely Thee Red Suit photo, and well, i Had to know more.
my classmate showed me the “press your number” music video few months back but with want it was my own accord to seek it out and watch it and… oh lads when i tell you. when i tell you i fell in love. i mean it. it was an Experience, trying to watch it with the shitty hotel wifi, sweaty from the heat, tired after long days of sightseeing. but worth every second of it. “want” is such a good concept and so perfectly executed by taemin it makes my head spin. years pass and while “idea” remains my favourite title track of his, “want” will forever have a very special place in my heart.
i wish i had words exactly to describe how grateful i am for the… privilege almost, to have taemin’s music and artistry at my side for so long now. i’ve only been here for exactly half of his solo career, 1/3 of his overall idol career, but to be able to experience even that… well. i’m at loss for words other than sometimes, i get so overwhelmed with it all that all left to do is let myself be absorbed in the mournful vocals of “already,” in the dance beat of “into the rhythm,” in the grandiose of “rise” or “love,” in the clear affection seeping through “pansy” or “night away,” in the defiance and challenge of “advice” and “pretty boy.”
i could go on and on, but the point is, i am in love with his music. and i am so very happy to be able to see his growth as an artist and person, to see him grow more confident and yet more relaxed in his craft. wah. this has gotten long, to wrap this all up………

gonna do this yumejoshi twitter thread! (not all of them but some of them) (actually wait nevermind i just did all of them)
1. briefly introduce your yume ship! is it romantic, platonic, familial, or something else?
mmm we are so in love it is doki doki love romantic kiss kiss mwah
2. how did you and your comfort character(s) meet?
i watched monogatari!
3. what is the dynamic between you and your comfort character(s)?
they tease me and mess with me a lot and say funny things and i laugh bc they are funny. we do... physical affection i give them kisses all the time. they are also a little mean... and try to get me to fall down a dark path. but its not that serious and probably doesnt work anyway since i just dont do things i dont want to. also, to some extent, this video. im the one on the right. and it would be more like, ougi is reading a book and smiling but yeah.
4. how would you and your comfort character(s) describe each other?
me describe ougi: the best. amazing. wonderful. brilliant. wise. super cool. love of my life. beautiful. adorable. impish. rude. fun. funny. beloved. hot 😳. sinister. scary. creepy. (<- good things) and more!
ougi describe me: cute. foolish. teasable. admirable. bubbly. considerate. thoughtful. kind. pleasant. easy. boobs
5. who is better at cooking?
neither of us are ace chefs but ougi is more swift when following recipes. so i would ask them to make food and then they make it bad on purpose to force me to get faster and better at cooking. grrrr...... annoying 💢......... but i wouldnt mind that much because i'd get to COOK FOR THEM YAAAAAAAAY NOURSHING OUGI and it would probably make me a better more confident cook too
6. who is better at organizing?
ougi. this has no footnotes
7. who is more athletic?
also ougi. they ride that bicycle. i do nothing....
8. who tends to lose track of time more?
probably me more, but i bet ougi would get lost in a good book (prolly mystery novel) and sit up to stretch and its 4 hours later
9. who gets tired faster?
probably also me with my lack of good physical practice.... ugwah.... ougi should take care of me when im tired........... wah....................
10. who gets more excited about special occasions (birthdays, holidays, etc)?
easily me. although i would get more excited for events for them than mine. they wouldnt really get excited for either. but they would make sure to celebrate my birthday and stuff of course.
its like this:
Tumblr media
i am the one who makes their birthday and such a special occasion... because i refuse to let it not be!!!!!!!!!!!! because they are the best and deserve nice things and should be celebrated😌
11. who is better at planning surprises/keeping secrets?
this is also ougi. have you seen that poker face?
also id be good at keeping secrets normally but they would just know anyway and make me tell them. also also if we were playing a prank together i would be the one trying not to crack up like 95% of the time. and the other 5% is we're both trying not to
12. what is something about you that your comfort character(s) don’t know?
mm... not much! probably random details and anecdotes. basically, whatever they don't ask about, or anything not important
13. what is something about you that ONLY your comfort character(s) know?
well if i said it would defeat the point! tryna get me to spill my secrets...
14. what are three ways in which you have changed since meeting your comfort character(s)?
im smarter and happier and much cooler
15. what are three ways in which your comfort character(s) have changed since meeting you?
HOPEFULLY, if they are not being an OBSTINATE LITTLE SHIT some of my love for them will have rubbed off and they like themself more now :) they are also happier, because obviously i don't make them anything but happy 😌✨ also they'd get even more insufferable. i can't not spoil them 😭
16. what is your favourite thing about your comfort character(s)?
everything! well, there's parts i like more. and they shouldnt be so hard on themself but. everything!
17. what is your comfort character(s)’s favourite thing about you?
they'd say boobs to mess with me >:( but it's not true 😇 they like my excitability and my kindness
18. what is your favourite moment featuring your comfort character(s) in the media they come from?
GWEH.
the gweh is just.... its just..... its everytihng
19. do you have alternate universes of your yume ship? tell us more about them!
welll...... unless u count me in naoetsu as au then no...................
20. what nicknames do you and your comfort character(s) have for each other?
oho?
i actually was tryna think up nicknames for ougi once but its hard bc their name is short already. i just kinda call em whatever comes to mind. they can be ougi, they can be my beloved, they can be my precious little thing, they can be the oug. the ouger, even. its what it is
ougi doesnt have nicknames for me they just call me by my name tho.
21. if you had to describe your yume ship with one song, which song would it be?
gwah theres a few of these.... hmmmmm.......
invisible touch is too perfect to not include
the bird and the bee - my love
mad head love - kenshi yonezu
and ill even put...
mitski first love late spring
arms tonite mother mother
some of it is describing the relationship more in general and some of its more about my feelings..... well thats okay too
22. where do you want to be with your comfort character(s) in three years?
🥺
i want us to be happily married and in love........ and i want to have raised my devotion levels and number of tributes 😌✨
23. if there was a book written about you and your comfort character(s), what would the title be?
going by the series' usual naming convention......... sakumonogatari (錯物語).

@deepsets said:  ok cha are u ready 18, 12, 14, 6 :smirk: for iwaoi (sms prompts) 18. a drunk text && 12. an accidental text && 14. a text that wasn’t sent && 6. a taunting text.
“Laura, give it back!” “Nuh-huh, it’s mine now! Where are your pictures? I wanna see all your embarrassing pictures!” Iwaizumi lounges forward; but his friend is too quick, and less inebriated, and definitely protected by their three other friends who seem to delight in Hajime’s current predicament. Alcohol and Hajime tend to mix well... until they don’t anymore because he has had one too many - strangely, his new friends in Irvine seem particularly keen on encouraging such slip-ups (and usually happily partake). He has long lost track of the number of empty glasses the waiters have already cleared from their table at their favourite bar - a cosy little place near the beach, all draped in rainbow colours in honour of Pride (Hajime had never really heard of the concept before coming here... and has since come to the conclusion that there is something pretty cool and hopeful about it).
And the evening would be cosy too... if only they hadn’t taken his damn phone hostage. Phone that, apparently, decides to betray him by letting out a distinctive ‘ding!’ after Laura has already secured it by half climbing up on her girlfriend’s shoulders (Sam does not seem to complain). “Oh oh oh! Whozzat from? Okay wait lemme pactice my hiragana... To... o... ru -  TOORU? THE TOORU?” YOU’RE DRUNK, SHUT UP AND GIVE IT BACK!” “Damn, Hajime, your English gets ten times better when you’re drunk and mad.” Sam comments, placidly.
This is bad. All of them have heard about Tooru before - his childhood best friend, his volleyball partner, Argentina’s most promising setter. Hajime has not figured out yet what it is, that got into their head - something he had said about Tooru, or the way he had said it... no matter what it is, it seemed they had all, collectively, more or less subtly at first (definitely not subtly when alcohol is involved), that whatever bond exists between him and Oikawa stretches a bit further than a simple friendship.
And every time they call him out, ask prodding questions, innocently ask him to show them videos of Oikawa’s latest performance... Iwaizumi struggles to find ground to completely deny their veiled assumptions. And perhaps it’s for the best... until Laura keeps his phone hostage right when an opening for a terrible idea appears. “You know what, I think you should let Tooru know how much fun you’re having... wait here!” With a cackle and ignoring all of Hajime’s protests, she takes a picture of the room (rainbow flags hanging from the walls and couples moving to the beat of the latest hit from a local LGBT+ radio station) (can you get any more Californian? Yuyang, their third acolyte, had asked, while sporting her own black and purple nailpolish for the month); and starts typing. “Okay, that’s enough.” Hajime grunts, to intoxicated not to climb up on a table to retrieve the precious device. “Noooo I’m almost done! Hajime you can’t-  wah!”
Well, if this isn’t the consequences of my own actions. The both of them freeze, Hajime’s fingers gripped around Laura’s wrist and fingers almost on the phone... well. Technically, already on the tactile screen.
“... Hajime, I think you sent it.” “WHAT??” “‘s not my phone you came at me like a brute!” “What did you send them??” Finally, Hajime retrieves his phone; frantically, he opens his recent messages...
And freezes.
[to: tooru - 19:35] yooooooo bet yuo wishh you wereh ere!! happy priiiiiiiide my best friend in the wohle wide woldr!!! come to cali next yaer!!!!!
“... I fucking hate you.” “I knoooow. You still owe me a drink though!” “I’m going outside for a bit.” Why??” “You know why!!” Ugh, this girl, he swears -- he is fuming, still, when he steps outside and is caught in marine breeze; starts cooling down, once his feet hit the sand and the murmur of the rumbling ocean permeates his bubble. Hajime looks down at his phone. Oikawa hasn’t seen the text yet... he can still salvage this, right?
[draft to: tooru - 19:40] hey. sorry, that was my friend, she’s super drunk and took my phone, ignore her. sorry about that.
Hajime’s finger hovers over the send button...  ... hm. I mean, it is Pride month... Hajime would be one hell of a sorry excuse of a friend if he didn’t send them his wishes, right? Plus, they’ll probably guess based on tone alone he wasn’t the one to write this text (Oikawa would know him by a single comma if challenged, he knows it).  And he does want them to come to California. So, really, Laura hasn’t lied. Only created circumstances one could call misleading.
Except Hajime is, maybe, a little tired of being dishonest. And words may be lacking still, but something in the pit of his stomach has already started to settle; and maybe that text isn’t as misleading as a younger, more closed-off Hajime would have wanted to believe. Iwaizumi sighs and shakes his head; and deletes the draft. Ah, well. Oikawa will read it, probably have a million questions, and ask them all the very next day while he nurtures his hangover in bed. But that’s a tomorrow problem, so - might as well wait and see what happens next, right?

Come fly with Shaggy and listen to his fabulous selection of reggae and dancehall music
FRESH from re-working his iconic tune It Wasn’t Me alongside electronic music producers Tenchi and Embody, Shaggy returns with a brand new album Com Fly Wid Me. The new long player is a collaborative effort with rock icon Sting who produced the album and was born from a crazy idea Sting had while on tour with Shaggy a few years ago. The album features reggae interpretations of some of Frank Sinatra’s classics including of That’s Life and of course Come Fly With Me.   Sting explains, “This idea of getting my friend to sing ten iconic songs from the Frank Sinatra songbook in a reggae style had been brewing for a while…I know, it sounds crazy! But every time the idea crossed my mind, it made me smile. And what does the world need now, more than anything else…something to smile about!” “I’ve always been a Sinatra fan,” says Shaggy. “As a child, Frank’s music was often playing in our house and on Sundays, all of the Jamaican radio stations would play the greats – Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, et cetera.” He continues, “It’s great to be working with Sting again. He’s the brother I never knew I needed!” CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO STREAM THE ALBUM ON SPOTIFY Sting adds, “The reason reggae may work here is because there’s a joy and energy about it which is similar to the energy that Frank’s music had at its summit. You know the songs, you know the voice, you just never expected this. He’s not trying to be Frank, he’s Shaggy. So, relax and let that smile soothe the cares of the world away.” Currently on tour in the UK, we caught up with Shaggy and he’s put together a playlist of reggae and dancehall favourites for us which follows. Hiii! I hope you're having a nice day/night! Could I request Zhongli, Xiao, Eula and perhaps also Razor with a gn!reader who starts talking passionately about their hobbies and suddenly shut up and apologize for rambling/bothering them? Can be headcanons or oneshots and the hobbies can be up to you ^^
Thank youuuu!! *offers a cookie*
Oh boy, cookie :D
You so sweet anon wah, hope you are having a good day/night too!
Request under the cut for long post, hope you like it!
Everyone in Liyue knew Zhongli was a very talkative person. One could hear him speak for hours and hours, and some even joked that he even talked in his sleep.
Zhongli
But no words came from him the moment they started talking.
Their voice was his favourite sound in all Teyvat. They always said they couldn’t get tired of his voice, but it was the same for them. Every time they spoke, it was like he went into a trance, a smile unconsciously forming on his face.
One of his favourite moments was when they talked about the most recent book they have read.
He loved how their eyes sparkled as they talked. How a small frown formed on their face as they mentioned their less favourite character. How their hands moved as they spoke.
Zhongli leaned in one hand as they continued speaking, a soft smile on his face as he listened to them.
“And then the protagon…. ah sorry, I was rambling again, wasn’t I? Sorry, must have been boring to hear me talk all this time” they said softly, smile disappearing from their face as they looked down.
Zhongli wasted no time to grab one of their hands across the table, gently rubbing his thumb over the skin.
“My dear, I love hearing you talk. Do continue if you want, please”
“Are you sure? I don’t want to make it boring…” they said, a bit of insecurity in their voice.
“Of course. Your voice is my favourite sound on this world, my dear”
Xiao
It was a peaceful night at the inn, and most of the clients and workers had already gone to sleep.
All except two, who were casually talking at the highest balcony of the inn.
Well, more like one of them was doing all the conversation. But they didn’t seem to mind, and neither did the adeptus at their side.
Xiao was someone of a few words and, even though he would never admit it aloud, their voice brought him some kind of comfort.
For him, it didn’t matter what they talked about. It always brought a small smile to his face.
The adeptus blinked as the sound of their voice faded, his gaze moving to look at his side.
“Sorry, all this… mortal stuff must be boring for you, right? You probably know about all the historical facts I’m telling you” they said with a nervous chuckle, their gaze moving to their hands.
Xiao didn’t like the sad look on their face. It made his stomach hurt somehow, he wanted them to smile again.
“... I never told you to stop, didn’t I?” he said, moving closer to them until their shoulders were touching.
The adeptus looked back at the sky, in an attempt to hide the light blush on his face.
“Continue talking. I want to hear more”
Eula
It wasn’t unusual to see Eula and (Y/N) hanging in Angel’s Share after a long day of work. It always helped Eula to relax after dealing with all her duties and people’s glances.
Their mere presence just made all her problems and worries disappear at the end of the day.
It helped her to talk about everything but, if she was honest, her favourite part was when they told her about their own day.
A smile formed on her face as they talked about some rare flowers they have found that day, and how they were making a small spot in their garden to add some of those flowers.
But they fell into silence as she took a small sip of her drink, and she couldn’t help but blink in confusion in their direction.
“Why did you stop?”
“Ah, I thought… it must be boring to hear me talking about flowers. Very boring compared to all the adventures you have as a knight, right?” They said with a nervous smile.
“I truly don’t see what you mean here. Flowers are very delicate and are considered unique in the noble circle” she said, leaving her to drink on the table.
Resting her head on one hand, she offered them a soft smile.
“So do continue talking. I would love to hear more”
Razor
The Wolf Kingdom was, for sure, their favourite place to draw. It was very peaceful, and not a lot of people adventured inside, fearing the wolves.
Which meant no one would stop to silently watch them paint.
It made them nervous, and only a few people were able to actually watch them paint.
Razor was, of course, between those few. He always sat near them as they painted, watching in silence as they painted.
Other times they told him about what they were planning to paint, considering the different techniques they could use and the different colours they would need.
Razor didn’t understand what they were talking about most of the time. It confused him, but he didn’t mind.
They looked so happy when they talked, so he was also happy.
So he was surprised when they suddenly stopped in their tracks, their voice fading away.
“Sorry Razor. Hearing all of this must be boring, right?” they said with a nervous chuckle, earning a confused look from him.
“But your voice… pretty. Razor likes to hear it…. and see you happy when you talk….” he said, gently taking one of their hands in his.
“If you are happy…. then Razor is happy too. Please, continue. Razor wants to hear more about pretty colours”

random question kyunki no pasoori today and I wanted to read something from you- which is your favourite arylie scene? 💕💕
I have to pick one? :(
I'll mention a few scenes that have, so far, stayed with me the most. In no particular order!!!
The Rain Scene.
Tumblr media
I do not give this scene enough love compared to the amount of times I have gone back to watch it. I always start my, "uff..missing arylie..lemme go back and watch some scenes!" binge with this. It's just so beautiful? the build up..the emotions...just the way it is shot! I mean it's all blue! and Imlie and Aryan are completely drenched in a rain that's not gentle. everything about this scene is so raw. be it Imlie's emotions which she had been trying to suppress bursting out of her and for the first time we actually see Aryan talking about HIS own hurt albeit not in direct words. I'd say it was here from where Aryan calling out Imlie's bullshit really started. His, "tumhara sirf break up hua hai Imlie! Koi marr nahin gaya hai." lives in my mind rentfree!! Sumbul and Fahmaan were just terrific in this scene and it was this scene which really cemented their potential as this pairing that were gonna serve some major intensity!
Aryan's Entry as Raj.
Tumblr media
This one is just personal, okay?! one of my fondest memories of the fandom. just the whole anticipation about who's gonna be Raj! If Imlie is Simran then definitely Aryan was going to be Raj. but oh my god what if he wasn't? everyone's look was revealed but why didn't we get Fahmaan's look reveal?! what was happening?! and then Atif posting that teaser and dropping his classic midnight bomb and the fandom just LOSING its shit. yeah..this one is personal. but not just cuz of the offscreen stuff. again, beautiful scene! it's the way he enters yaar! the slow-motion shot of him grabbing her hand (uff that visual will never not make my heart skip a beat) and then the focus of the scene being Imlie rather than Aryan. HER shock, HER gratefulness...the wah SHE follows him without putting up and resistance. it's just...gorgeously shot. again, Sumbul was terrific in this scene. her expressions alone have kept the Imlie side of AryLie alive, let's be honest. just the way Imlie LOOKS at Aryan...with awe, with wonderment, like she hadn't ever seen him before this moment...stuff of dreams this scene is.
Tum Ro Sakti Ho.
Tumblr media
DO I EVEN NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS???????? What a MAGNIFICENT conclusion to a very very dramatic track. like..no wonder the TRPs had crossed 3+ for the track because really, the AdiNi remarriage track was some goooood ITV writing. and if we disregard what happens afterwards (because urgh) and just take this scene as the finale of the track and it not only very neatly ties up Imlie's arc of the track with her getting that final jhatka that her relationship with BS has ended which in turn pushes her on this path of prioritizing her own personal well-being over any relationship...her wanting to now put her emotions second and her logic first...but it also served as this brilliant opening for a new AryLie track all because of her questioning him about his pain. this is intense and angsty and just AGAIN..such brilliant performance by both Sumbul and Fahmaan. even direction wise..before this we didn't really see Aryan being so invasive of Imlie's personal space unless he wanted to threaten her with his presence. this was him pulling her close lest she pulls away entirely. this scene was an indication that the two of them had now entered a new territory wrt their relationship. again..stuff dreams are made of!
The Hero-Villain Conversation
Tumblr media
Hands down my favorite scene from the entire Pagdandiya track. goodness, I made this entire thread about this scene (which I can no longer find cuz hah I locked my twt and I don't even have the password with me clownfaceemoji) but I had talked about how the casualness with which Aryan and Imlie had this conversation was reflective of their development. in the thread I had said that this was the sort of conversation that two friends would have after a long week of work on a weekend...chilling on the terrace with beers and snacks. it was friendly, it was lowkey flirtatious. and most importantly...you could SEE the bone tiredness of Imlie and Aryan in their body language. the two had had a long day from which they hadn't fully recovered before being thrust into this storm that had triggered Imlie's trauma. she was shaken and on the verge of a complete breakdown if not for Aryan who held her back physically and then with his presence, distracted her enough to calm her down. and that's just one part! the other part of brilliance this scene is the layers of meaning behind the Hero-Villain-Item Girl they were speaking in. Aryan calling himself the Villain i.e. the final boss she would have to face that would determine her victory or loss. Imlie calling him not as important...and naming him the Item Girl of the movie - splendid, glamorous, and brief with no relevance to the actual plot of the movie. excellent writing, wonderful direction, superb performance. and this scene being followed by the Shikayatein sequence and that was just...*chef kiss*
Special Mentions.
Fairylight Scene.
Tumblr media
Because it was this scene that got my first ever attention. Hey! I am a RiKara stan! Fairylights will ALWAYS be special for me.
Aryan Saves Imlie From The Drunk Boys
Tumblr media
Because it was here that I started shipping them.

Metro
Scenario: not much before the events regarding the Death Note, Light and Y/N meet on a train, after a long day at school.
B/F/N: best friend's name
pairing: Light x gn!reader
warning: pov switches
requested: nope
Tumblr media
Finally, it was over: welcome weekend! Friday's lessons were always more stressful than the others, at least for Y/N.
«See you on Monday, Y/N-san!»
«Sure, B/F/N-san!»
Sunsets in Japan looked like a portrait, especially if the sky was almost completely clear: a soft shade of orange mixed perfectly with the last hints of light blue and the clouds, every here and there, looked like fluffy sheep.
Y/N, on their way towards the metro station, was enjoying the sky and the background city noises: the bicycle bells of few cyclists, the clamour of small groups of people, the laughs of children, the loud thud of something falling down at the vending machine and, unfaltering, the traffic. However, it seemed like that each sound was softened, maybe with the help of that magnificent sunset. Those noises cradled sweetly Y/N, smoothening the stress a bit.
"𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗸𝘂-𝗜𝗸𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗸𝘂𝗿𝗼. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. 𝗣𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽."
Y/N snapped back into the real world thanks to that announcement. They were going back home and Y/N couldn’t wait to take a long, warm bath.
The shining white and green train stopped and they waited until all the passengers got off before climbing up. Once they found a nice seat far from the doors, Y/N took their headphones and walkman to listen some music before their stop.
.
.
🖊️ LIGHT'S POV 🖊️
Each day was the same, each day was boring as the previous. Light, a 17 years old student, took the train to come back home as he always did after school. A bored and neutral expression on his face showed how indifferent he was regarding the world around him.
He climbed in the white and green train and he noticed many people occupied almost all the seats. He sighed mentally, he was already prepared to spend the route standing up. However, with the corner of his brown eyes he spotted an empty seat: it was next a person who was listening to music, H/C hair, the uniform of a different high school and smooth S/C skin. At least Light wouldn’t spend the next forty minutes upright.
He walked closer to them and tapped their shoulder with a finger, he put his usual polite face mask and asked them: «Excuse me, is that seat taken?»
.
.
-NORMAL POV-
Y/N was peacefully listening their favourite track when someone tapped at their shoulder.
«Excuse me, is that seat taken?»
There was standing one of the most handsome boy Y/N ever saw: light-brown hair and brown eyes; he was wearing a school uniform: a tan suit and red tie. They recognised the logo of the Daikoku Private Academy: that boy must be someone really talented if he attended that institute.
«Oh no, it's not» Y/N replied kindly, removing one headphone to answer at him. The boy smiled and sat at their left. Y/N put the headphone back in their ear and kept listening to music.
However, Y/N couldn’t remove the boy's face from their mind: how his skin shone under the neon of train, the way his uniform suited him perfectly and how alluring his voice was. And the music wasn’t helping their dreams.
Very slowly, due to all the stress of that week, Y/N was drifting in a deep sleep, unaware they placed the head against the boy's shoulder.
.
.
🖊️ AGAIN LIGHT'S POV 🖊️
Light took a book from his bag and started to read it, taking advantage of the silence of the train to study something for the exams. However, from time to time, his gaze would move from the pages to the person beside him. He noticed how quietly they would hum the refrain of the song they were listening or, if it was a classic piece, the way they tapped their fingers against the legs as to pretend to play a piano.
For some reason that Light had to figure out yet, that person seemed not to be boring as the rest of his peers. They smiled at the people who got in the train so casually that it almost surprised him.
Nonetheless, he tried his best to focus on his book: that exam was very important and he needed the best score to attend the To-Oh University. Few minutes later it seemed that Light was again absorbed in his book until he felt a sort of weight on his shoulder. He turned towards the person beside him and noticed that they fell asleep against him: they were so close to him, he could smell the sweet scent of their shampoo.
Light caught nervously and tried not to move too much in order not to wake them up. However, he didn’t know why he did it.
.
.
- TIME SKIP, NORMAL POV-
«Excuse me?»
Y/N woke up because someone was slightly shaking them. Once they opened their eyes, they realised that not only she fell asleep on a train but they slept against a stranger's shoulder too.
«Oh my, I'm terribly sorry! I didn’t mean to…gosh, I'm so sorry!» Y/N apologised as fast as they could. At least they didn’t drool over his uniform during the sleep.
However, the boy didn’t seem offended by it. «No need to apologise, it happens to me too. Although…I think the batteries of your walkman ran out»
Y/N looked down at their walkman and despite all their attempts to turn it on, it seemed the boy was right. They sighed but smiled. «Yeah…the way back home will be incredibly boring then»
The boy chuckled. «I'm Yagami Light, nice to meet you» he introduced himself and did a little bow.
«I'm Y/N L/N, likewise» and they bowed back, introducing themselves all embarrassed from before. «Wait…are you the same Yagami Light, the Japanese junior national tennis champion for two years running?» Y/N asked in disbelief.
Light chuckled once again. «Yes, that's me» the smile never left his face.
«Wah-! I watched all your matches! You were incredible back then»
«I still am, actually» Light replied with a hint of pride…or was that arrogance?
They kept talking for few other minutes until the train stopped and both of them stood up at the same moment. Surprisingly they got off at the same stop hence they could talk for a little bit more. Light and Y/N talked about many random things: school, the future, hobbies, music. In other words: they spoke about everything and anything, just appreciating each other presence.
Light had to admit: Y/N was interesting. They knew so many things, they could switch from a topic to another without efforts and without forgetting where they were if Light interrupted them. Actually, Y/N was the only one that caught his attention after long time, it was a shame they attended a different high school.
Thirty minutes later Y/N and Light arrived at a crossroads. «I have to turn here»
«Oh, I see» Light observed the road Y/N was going to take and recognised the neighbourhood. It was not that far from his house. «It was nice talking to you, Y/N…despite our bizarre meet»
Y/N laughed quietly, still a bit embarrassed. «Don't recall it, please»
The two of them exchanged few more words and then they went in different directions. During his way back home Light thought about something: finally, someone interesting among all those boring people.

Kim Seokjin - Collect
Stamps, figurines, DVD’s, playing cards, and even books. If it could be collected he had it. Seokjin was the collector, and he wanted you.
Min Yoongi - Rocks
“I will take a scotch on the rocks” he said sitting at the bar
“Mister why do you want your drink with rocks?” he turned to see a small child sitting on the bar colouring in, and he did a double take.
“Uh rocks means ice usually, what are you doing in here?”
“Mama couldn’t find a babysitter again” the small boy said “Do you like colouring in?”
“Sure” He said lying through his teeth, he hadn’t coloured in since he was a child and he didn’t ever plan to colour in until a few pages were thrust upon him.
“Would you like to colour in with me sir?” The boys smiled holding up two pages.
“I have two really cool pages left, the Wizard and the Werewolf” Yoongi looked at the pictures and thought they did look pretty complicated for a childrens colour in. He took the Werewolf and a few colours and got to work, by the end of it he moved a barstool closer so the two could share more colours and they started talking. Suga didn’t realize he was talking about himself and his day, when a beautiful bartender stepped over.
“Hey my boy can I get you anything?” she asked, assessing the situation and smiling gently at Yoongi.
“Can I have a Juice mama?”
“How many have you had tonight?”
“One” he said and she nodded.
“One last one, and you have another hour and a half and then it is your bedtime, you know the rules bed by eight.” She looked to Yoongi, “can I get you another drink?”
And Yoongi felt he wasn’t stressed anymore he had talked it out with the young boy and coloured his problems away. “Ah a Juice as well please”
“Two juices and I might bring over some cookies to share okay.” She walked off, going to get some tall glasses and a plastic tumblr.
“Mister you are nice, and I think you did the right thing even though your boss is upset, it is better that you feel good in your heart and get yelled at, then to feel icky because you made the old woman pay double.”
“That’s what I think too. Thanks little man you really made me feel better”  He sighed the two coloured and worked together talking about different and better things.
“Alright mister, you know what time it is” His mother said
“But mama I am almost finished with the wizards coat and then I am done” The boy pleaded “Please mama Five more minutes, I will get it done I swear.”
“Five more minutes, Please” Yoongi added with a gummy smile “We are almost finished”
“Alright five more minutes and that is it,” She sighed “You are lucky you are both cute”
Jung Hoseok - Hat
In the dance team Neuron, there were many great dancers, one of them wore a bucket hat and a mask that kept his face from the public, it helped him feel like no one was watching. He was known infamously to never show his face and he preferred it that way. One day he was packing up after a gig when he was packing up some speakers into a van when he started to get really dizzy. You walked over noticing Hoseok stumble a few times he was your favourite member. You thought he was mysterious and a really expert dancer.
You offered him help and before he could answer he and the speaker began falling. You caught the two but crumbled under the weight of a full grown man and a decent size speaker. Gently moving the equipment out of his hands you lifted him as best you could and got him to the dance teams van. You laid him down and took off his hat and wet a small towel and draped it over his forehead and eyes and you unzipped his hoodie and took off the mask. You fanned him as the crew walked over concerned.
“He passed out, I brought him to your van and I covered his face with the towel, I thought it would be disrespectful to look” You whispered, it wasn’t long before Hoseok stirred the crew finally finished packing up all there things and a few had bored some cold drinks as it was an incredibly hot day.
“What happened?” Hoseok sat up the wet towel falling from his face and you covered your eyes. “You passed out, I didn’t look but I took off your hat and mask and put a wet towel on your head.”
“You can look, it’s not a big secret friend” He chuckled as you peeked out through your fingers with his permission.
Kim Namjoon - Country
Namjoon loved plants, hiking and nature. So it wasn’t a hard decision to leave Seoul and start a little Farm, he wasn’t very good at farming, he was awfully clumsy but, it seemed the next door neighbour Taehyung came to his rescue. Teaching him all the tricks of the trade and how to drive a tractor.
Park Jimin - Pirate @jellycake2109
There were Pirates who were ruthless killers and pirates who were cunning thieves, but there was one pirate unlike any other. The nicest Pirate of them all. He didn’t have to resort to petty theft as everyone he met was willing to give him anything he desired. The only crime he could be convicted of was breaking hearts. Of course, he could be scary. There was something about the way this sassy Pirate would turn cold when he was wronged and nobody wanted to be on the receiving end of his glare or the pointy end of his sword.
So why was he so angry? Why was he stomping through the town on a mission to find you and drag you back to his ship? What could you have possibly done?
You made him fall in love with you.
Kim Taehyung - Rice
Dinner was Taehyung’s favourite meal, it was a time to connect with family and friends and to enjoy delicious foods after a long day. He was always in charge of something easy as the boys didn’t want to overwhelm him but today he was given the duty of making and serving the rice. He measured and washed the rice hoping there was enough for everyone, he carried it to the rice cooker and put it inside pressed all the buttons he was told to by his hyung’s Yoongi and Seokjin who diligently encouraged the young boy.
And then he sat waiting like a little golden retriever for his owner to come home, he sat and watched the machine occasionally biting his thumb nail nervously. He wanted to help. And when the machine pinged he opened the lid and saw the perfectly cooked fluffy rice sitting inside the machine. He grinned “Hyung, I did it!”
His two hyungs stepped over and gave him a barrage of compliments. “Wah look at how fluffy it is Taehyung, you will have to cook the rice more often.” Seokjin patted his head before returning to the stove.
Jeon Jungkook -  Gymnastics
“We rented out the Gymnasium for you, no one can come in except there is a young lady if it is alright with you who is training this evening with a floor routine. She has a competition in about two weeks and she really needs to use the time she has if it isn’t too much trouble to share.
“No that is alright, thank you so much for even letting me use the gym in the first place” Jungkook blushed, he too had a competition in two weeks he was on the uneven bars and he was working hard to perfect his routine. He hadn’t really had time for girls usually spending time training. He didn’t think much on it, until he heard the heavy gym door squeak open and click shut.
There you were a beautiful young woman dressed in some track pants and a hoodie, you gave him a shy smile and the two of you continued working on your routines hyper aware of one another. You both took a break drinking water and he asked you a question. Nothing important, just small talk and soon the two of you had sat down reluctant to return to your practice and instead indulging in each other's company.
“Do you ever find it just a bit stuffy,” You sighed “Like you want to just eat a hamburger or go to the movies and hang out with friends instead of just training every afternoon”
“I think about it sometimes, hell I wish I could kiss a girl once just to know what it is like?” He laughed and you leaned over pressing your lips, stifling the sound of his chuckles and watching his neck and ears go pink.

i don’t usually do this but i feel Compelled to do a liveblog/review of Mouth Dreams so here goes
Please don’t read this if you haven’t heard the album yet as it’ll spoil Everything
(i’ll admit the idea came to me After i listened to Just a Baby so these first ones are gonna be relistened reviews)
first we got Yahoo. what can i say about this song? neil starts off Strong with incredibly sustained notes and just one phrase, in typical neil style. and he makes it work in so many different ways! honestly didn’t expect myself to get so attached so fast but that’s just the way his magic works ig. when the hoooooooos harmonise it almost brings tears to the eyes. i would love to see a group of choristers singing this with another guy on an electric keyboard. what a cold open. 9/10
of course then we go on to the titular track, the dimension of sound, the dimension of imagination, the dimension of doors. rod serling narrates the intro in his traditional monotone as the warbling twilight zone theme plays in the background. i tell ya i was actually Screaming when the track finished and he dropped the title! it may not be a song per se, sort of like Blockbuster from Mouth Moods, a ‘filler track’ if you will, but the effort in those fifty seconds cannot be ignored. it just goes to show once again how Good he is at what he does. 6.5/10
oh lawd, my favourite so far, Spongerock. reading the title i had absolutely No idea what to expect. the goofy goober song from the movie? winner takes all from band geeks? i was pleasantly surprised to find myself tapping out queen’s distinctive boom boom CLAP as the song progressed, and i was in complete Hysterics the whole way through, chanting along with the kids as the pirate encouraged me to sing louder. it’s such a beautiful fit the way they mesh together, and it’s one of those mashups that you listen to and think ‘why has nobody done this before?’ but neil is on a higher plane of existence than us and Knows where it’s at. you’re never the same after you’ve listened to Spongerock. 7.5/10
Just a Baby, where i stopped to begin this thing, is a melancholy song, which i’m not usually a fan of. i admit i don’t know the original song so i kept quiet until the last chorus or two. it’s the yang to the yin of Wow Wow from Moods, another sentence-mixer that was like a full Bop and barely gave you time to catch your breath. in Just a Baby you begin to empathise with the singer as he regales confusing times of his constant youth, including the time his mother (a train) shot a man in cold blood. it’s a powerful ballad, and it’s got a tasteful amount of justin bieber adding backing vocals to the chorus. i may have to deduct a few points cos the lyrics are gonna be hard af to remember. 7/10
ok next up we got Superkiller. this one’s totally blind! i’m. ehhhhh okay not diggin this one very much. ok that say something once line being repeated was comedy gold but talking heads are just like. kinda tuneless tbh. i’m glad he’s trying to lassoo it together with u can’t touch this but it’s kinda falling short tbh. i wouldn’t skip it but it’s not as memorable as the previous ones. 5/10
starting Get Happy. i’m not gonna lie i think i Know what this is, there are only so many options after all. i predict it’s a mix of “get dancin’” by disco-tex and the sex-o-lettes and “happy” by bahrrel williams, and i really hope that ain’t the case cos i Love the first one but despise the latter. oh well let’s see if he can pull it off. sounds like village green by the kinks so far lol uhhhh i have no idea what to make of this. okay i feel like i’m gonna like this after all. hey it’s got memorable lyrics at least! is it gonna get faster? or just more bassy? yknow maybe i was too critical at the start, but i had no idea what to expect. this is a feel-good pop song and it’s definitely making me feel happier than i was when i was listening to Superkiller. 7/10
Ribs? wtf do i expect from a song called Ribs lmao another song i’ve never heard of IH IT’S EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE TH WORLD OH YEEEEEEEEES omg i Love this song i sing it to myself when i’m walkin my dog cos his little paws click-clack on the pavement to the exact rhythm of the song omg i’m in Love! another one with odd lyrics but i think after a Lot of repeat listening i’ll be able to properly croon along to this one omg! it reminds me of Best from Mouth Silence in that they’re both about products, only instead of folgers in your cup it’s about chili’s baby back ribs omg neil you’re Perfect! how come more advertisers haven’t contacted you for a product placement deal?? 7.5/10
next we got My Mouth. welcome to? who knows let’s hit play. ooooh minor key. is this a real song? it sounds like oney singing a cover of something. oh That’s the gimmick? 2:30 long i hope there’s something else tbh cos otherwise it’s gonna get pretty thin pretty fast. mm not a fan. the weakest so far imo especially after Ribs blew me away. definitely a bad dream. 3.5/10
Aerolong don’t fail me now! okay see This is how you do a mashup. I DON’T MISS YOU BABAY AND I DO WANNA MISS A THING THAT’S GOLD!! this is just a song about saying bye to your ex lmao i love it. wish it was longer though. 6/10
Sleepin’ here we go! ok in the youtube version the first half of this song is just silence so that wasn’t fun. gee this one’s only moderately better than My Mouth i’m feeling very shortchanged. 4/10
what to expect from Aamoorree? hopefully this one’s another jam but...okay i’m likin this one. it’s Fun and isn’t trying too hard! it’s just a drunk dean martin singing about pizza pie on karaoke night, what more could you ask for lol. 6/10
Where Is My Mom? by the p-p-p-pooo-oo-ooo-oooool of course. i don’t recognise the other song but it’s decent. i’ve listened to slowed-down songs before (the sludgefest chipmunks albums lately) and this one’s kinda ok. not a fan of the ending but points for effort ig. 5.5/10
Fredhammer ay? might there be some peter gabriel in there? undoubtedly. yup there it is lol ok now bring in the flintstones? oh ig that’s fred durst? mm not totally feeling it so far but censoring he** was funny lmao HEY THERE’S SEINFELD i’m wheezin that was a good way to end a song, well done neil. 6.5/10
here goes Limp Wicket. i’m on the edge of my seat. and Again i’m disappointed. is this a bunch of ewoks singing some kind of star wars song? or is it jarjar? either way this is Not a good song. it probably wasn’t before he mashed it up but this wasn’t an improvement. bringing in Fredhammer didn’t help this song much at all, in fact i think it brought both songs down actually. last one was a 7/10 but i Have to dock it points now that it’s a two-parter. as for this one? i’m being generous cos the limp bizkit song was good. 1/10
Cannibals runs for 4 minutes. PLEASE don’t let this be a repeat of the last one. i get that miners can’t dig up gold every time but don’t just show up with a bunch of rocks and iron pyrites yknow i’m just gonna start. i don’t want to be angry at this album. i recognise that sound in the bg! from a cyriak vid i think. thx comin in. loooooooong drone. ugh UGH there are Too many lucid dreams on this album. starting to regret liveblogging this cos i Loved the other three mouth albums. this one’s just falling flat again and again. 3/10
here comes The Outsiders. there is NOTHING to say about this. 1.5/10
come on Johnny. okay that got a laugh out of me, not many songs start with a booing crowd like that, is that meta? wouldn’t put it past him tbh. ah i’ll give it a 5/10, for a kinda filler song it wasn’t too bad.
Closerflies, this has gotta be gold. PLEASE. intro’s goin on for a little too long...mm having never heard the original version of closer i gotta admit i thought it’d be faster, like the one used in Rollercloser in Silence. this version seems very sloppy and sluggish, especially the bassline. 3/10
Nightmovin’ i’m not expecting much OH good intro oh YES now here we go. this is a good one, it’s got clear lyrics and a catchy tune, i’m liking this one more and more by the second. cuts off weird but it’s going into the next one. so i’m gonna leave the rating out of this one and see how it is after the next one.
Whitehouse i’m holding my breath. mm it’s Good but not great tbh. criminal that the last one was half as long as this one. think i’m gonna give both of these songs a 5/10 i doubt they’ll be anyone’s favourites. the title is a nice little joke too i respect that.
Wah! what’s neil’s obsession with using wannabe as a source lmao! it’s another decent one but nothing memorable again. 5/10
Pee Wee Inc i’m expecting big things. good intro I’M IN LOVE okay this is Much better than i imagined it’d be. did he use the radio edit of feel good inc? this is a heck of a way to bring it back to the gold stuff and i wouldn’t be surprised if this is what neil’s head sounds like all the time. 7/10
on to 10,000 Spoons. not sure what to expect from the title. okay this is a Nice one i think. throwback to the likes of Just a Baby with the two songs and the sentence mixing and it’s Good. and really 10,000 spoons is So ironic anyway, don’t you think? 7/10
oh another song called Mouth Dreams? an extro? that was Weird lol ok the intro i wasn’t too keen on, def not as much as the intro, but i got to appreciate it as it went on. like Rlly appreciate it i was beginning to reflect on what a journey i’d been through tonight, especially writing it all down. felt very poetic. and then WHAM, out of nowhere, after being gone for 23 songs, all-star came Back and How! gotta give this one a 7.5/10
keep the train rolling Brithoven! i can hear faint bits of instruments in britney’s song in the back of her audio which sound like a mistake but knowing neil.......yah lmao. this song’s kinda like Promenade (Satellite Pictures at an Exhibition) from Mouth Sounds, i liked what i heard. very nice. 6.5/10
the final song. we’re gonna be hit one more time for Ain’t! and i have NO idea what i’m in for! in the hall of the mountain king eh? is this like a way of looping around to the first song of the first album with classical music? ok the snoring’s a nod to Bustin i’m sure lmao funny anyway. i thought i heard a hey now in there but i must be going nuts. wouldn’t call it a grand finale but it is what it is. 5/10
now the question that must be asked - was Mouth Dreams trying to make a point? was there a reasons so many songs were of lower-quality than previous albums? perhaps it’s just a matter of taste, or perhaps it’s as rod said back on track two, that this album is a doorway into another dimension, and the further you progress, the more mind-rattling, brain-melting concepts you come across. the album gets an average of 5.5 which is kinda disappointing. don’t think i’ll be listening to the whole thing again. thanks for reading!

This is my contribution for the Nanbaka Secret Santa Event of this year! My giftee was @darkthiefofamestris and I hope you will like it at least! You can also read it under the cut. Enjoy :D
A pill for the heart
Nico wasn’t a big fan of waking up. When he was younger he didn’t have a roof over his head and sometimes found himself wishing to not wake up. Then he ended up in the medical reform school, where his trypanophobia implemented its roots. He couldn’t have a good night’s rest, having nightmares about the horrifying needles and medications he had to endure only to escape few days before it came. But even then it wasn’t good, going back to being a child on the streets.
But then he met (or, better said, re-met) with three other boys his age that made his days happier. And together the four of them ended in Nanba Prison, becoming cellmates. Slowly and surely, they became like family to him. And one of them became even his lover.
Even if his blanket was puffier and warmer, his mangas and animes came more frequently than before and his medicaments became strictly oral, accompanied with his favorites flavours, waking up didn’t become a treasured moment in his day.
But because of Uno it did.
Their beds were always right next to each other, even before they became an official couple, but only recently did they start to only share one, cuddling under the same blanket in a mess of limbs and long hair. Sometimes Uno left his hair unbraided for the night and Nico really enjoyed having it around him, with a sweet scent of coconut shampoo embracing him (sometimes it got in his mouth and it wasn’t that funny anymore, especially when it got tangled in his uniform’s zipper, but it was comfortable nonetheless).
It was all worth it, though. Now he got to wake up in a sweet embrace and look sleepily at the one boy he felt closer than with anyone else he had ever met. Sure, it still felt weird to have someone’s hot breathe into your face or that close to it, but in Nico’s sleepy state it didn’t matter that much. He usually woke up for a few minutes during the night, not used yet to long periods of rest, found himself looking up at his boyfriend and fell asleep back with a small smile on his lips, safe and happy.
Yamamoto coming in their cell in waking everyone up, though, made it all harder to like waking up. Nico hated exercising, especially so early in the morning.
“Good morning, my friends! It is time for our morning workout, hahaha!”
Every prisoner groaned, despising that time of the day. They were still teenagers, after all, if they could they would have slept all morning. Nico especially, nuzzling back in Uno’s chest, trying to hide under the cover.
No luck, though, as Yamamoto grabbed him by the collar and held him up like he weight nothing.
“Come on, inmate 25! Some exercise would do you good, you are young at heart and your body has to be prepared for the responsibilities of adulthood!”
“Wah, Yamamoto, I don’t wanna, it’s way too early in the morning! Why do you take me up and not Jyugo-kun, we are the same age and he’s weaker than me!”
“Number 25, stop whining!” a familiar voice came from down the hall, followed by the heavy steps of Hajime. “Yamamoto, put number 25 down. He’s going to come and take his medicine first. Now come.”
“Yay, Hajime saved me!” Nico jumped out of Yamamoto’s grip with a new found force and energy, fueled up by his happiness.
“Awe, that’s not fair, why does Nico get to always play the medicine card?” Rock complained loudly, being shaken by a laughing Yamamoto.
“Because we all know what happens when he doesn’t get his medicine.” A shiver run through Nico’s inmates spines at the same time and Hajime frowned, everyone recalling the limited memories they had with that side of Nico. They hoped they would never see it again.
“Nico, bring me something sweet back from the doctor, okay?” Uno screamed after his boyfriend, dragged by Yamamoto before he even had the time to braid his long hair.
“Okay!” Nico waved at the pile of boys dragged by a normal Yamamoto, skipping along  in the other direction with a pacing Hajime. “Which medicine is today, Hajime-chan?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is it for my low sugar level?”
“I don’t know.”
“My short term memory loss?”
“I don’t know.”
“My blood cells problem?”
“I don’t know.”
“Oh, do you think they discovered something new?” Nico gasped, momentarily stopping in his tracks, little stars sparkling in his eye. “What if they discovered something out of this world in my DNA, like in that new manga I started reading?” he gasped again. “This means I will have to burden the big responsibility of saving the planet from a great force they have never anticipated! Wait, but does this mean that I will have to train myself? Ugh, I hate training myself, especially with Yamamoto, he has no limits! But also, I heard that in the new volume the protagonist’s love interest will be kidnapped and used as bait to lure him out.” His arms franatically fly around, planting his feet in front of the guard to stop him. “Hajime-chan, what if someone kidnaps Uno?! I am still weak, I haven’t trained yet!”
“That would be impossible, no one escaped Nanba Prison before.” He moved the inmate around with ease, making sure he wouldn’t try anything out of his normal behavior.
“Ah, that’s right, only Jyugo is still playing around. Oh, then if he can escape Nanba will he become some sort of celebrity? Will tv people come here and take interviews? I always wondered how it is like to be famous. Have you ever appeared on TV, Hajime-chan? Though I guess your brother is more the type to do that, he is very cute and would make a wonderful TV host.”
“Inmate, stop talking about my brother. We have arrived.”
“Huh? Where were we going again?”
“To get your medicine. You obviously need your memory ones.”
Nico giggled at Hajime’s unintentional joke. He had to admit, he was always looking forward to his medication time because everything tasted so good and he felt better after he took his pills. He could take one of his pills and then eat a strawberry from the cake Rock gave him to try while escaping prison and he couldn’t tell the difference when it came to taste.
He was always wondering what flavor he would get that day, maybe lemon or something more salty, like caramel, or maybe even tiramisu. He was once afraid he would get obsessed by the pills unhealthily, but the doctor knew how to make each one feel like enough for his tummy.
In the infirmary, the doctor greeted by announcing that today he had to take a new special treatment made especially for his heart. Nico was a little puzzled, he couldn’t remember what heart problems he had, but then again he couldn’t count on two hands half his affections. Nonetheless, he took it and left out an ecstatic noise at the cherry flavor. The doctor run some more tests and then let him go.
On the way back, Nico skipped happily, ranting about everything and anything that crossed his mind. From his favourite flavours to the next coming anime he wished to watch immediately.
And then he felt like his left foot hit something and he hit the ground, face first.
“Inmate, watch your steps! You almost squashed Kuu under you?”
“Kuu?” Nico asked, confused. “Hajime, I can’t see no Kuu.”
There was an indignant ‘meow’ and a little stab of claws on his leg, but Nico still couldn’t see anything. He shrieked and jumped on Hajime out of fear.
“Hajime, I think Kuu is dead and his ghost is hunting the jail!”
“What are you babbling about, idiot? Kuu was just here and left because you tripped over him.” Hajime was silent for a few seconds, inspecting the way Nico was looking around frantically. “Please tell me you are not having any side from the treatment.”
Nico gasped in shock. “It could be! But I was never blind before! Or… partially blind? I can see you and the walls and I could still see everything at the infirmary when we left.”
“That damn doctor, didn’t he say anything about side effects?”
“Not in a while.”
Hajime sighed and took the inmate off of him. They walked back to Nico’s cell, everything going normal so far since the incident with Kuu. Hajime really hoped it would be the only surprise of the day.
“Inmate, we have arrived.”
Nico stared at a wall, his eyes empty of any emotion. He stared for a good few seconds more and then turned to the guard. “Hajime, this is a wall.”
Hajime face palmed, feeling a terrible ache in his stomach.
“Hey, Nico, that’s not nice, man.”
Nico looked around. He was sure the sound came from straight ahead, but he could only see a the wall.
“Yeah, is that a way to talk to your boyfriend? At least say that my muscles are hard like a wall, damn it!”
“Uno, you barely have muscles.”
“Look who’s talking, mister I-Can-Only-Escape-From-Jail!”
“Where is everyone?! I can’t see anyone!”
“They are right in front of you inmate, try to walk forward and you will get into the cell.”
Nico tried Hajime’s advice and made a few steps. It looked like he did nothing, to him the wall was at the exact same distance as before. He turned his head at Hajime, who made a hand gesture to press him on. Nico tried again. The same result. “What the-“ he thought to himself. He tried taking more determined steps. Nothing. And then he started running. It felt like was running on the same patch of earth and not at the same time. The wall even started to get more far away. He tried running faster, but he was already becoming tired.
“Nico, are you okay?” asked Jyugo’s voice.
“Yeah, you look a little sick.” Added Rock from somewhere, somehow feeling like from everywhere.
“What happened?” asked Uno.
“I dunno!” shouted Nico in desperation. “I just went and took my heart medicine and now I can’t see some stuff!” His breathing became sharp, sweat forming on his forehead. Maybe he shouldn’t have skipped working out with Yamamoto. “Ah, I shouldn’t have taken the pill!”
“What pill?”
Nico opened his eyes and jolted up, trying to catch his eratic breathing. Looking around, he was in his cell, early in the morning, with all his sleepy cellmates looking at him worried.
“Nico, did you take some weird experimental thing again?” Uno asked, a little angry. “I swear to God, I will go to that doctor and give him a piece of-“
“It’s okay, I just had a weird dream.” Nico laughed a little, calm now. “Maybe I shouldn’t have eaten so many trusted cherries before sleep.”
“Weird you should say that,” started Jyugo.
“Yeah, Hajime came by some minutes ago and left us this package for you from the doctor, saying he and his wife went on a little vacation.” Rock opened the little zip bag slowly. “He said they are for some heart things and they smell so sickly of cherries.”
“No!” Nico jumped up from his bed and started running around, as away from that bag as possible. “I am NOT taking them!”
“Nico, don’t!” the trio looked all suddenly scared, remembering what will happen if Nico doesn’t take his medication. “Nico, you know you have to take them!” said Uno, running after him with Jyugo and Rock. “Please, for me?”
“No, keep those away from me!”
Just a normal morning at Nanba prison.

My April playlist is finished! Please allow me to take you on a journey from the heaven of THP Orchestra to the hell of Inter Arma over three action packed hours. Specially sequenced for maximum enjoyment, there’ll be at least one thing in here you’ll love - I guarantee it. Listen here.
Good To Me - THP Orchestra: I've said it before and I'll say it again, the number one way to find good songs is to go through the whosampled page for Duck Sauce's 2013 album Quack because every single thing they put into that album is a bonafide classic.
I'm Your Boogie Man - KC & The Sunshine Band: I saw Jungle last week and they were absolutely amazing, and the venue started playing this song as soon as the house lights went up after the show which is an extremely good way to get people to not leave your venue and boogie instead. My favourite part of this is near the end of the second verse where he gets even lazier than normal with the lyrics and just says "I want to love you.. ah.. from sundown.. sunup".
Work It Out - A-Trak: I love this new A-Trak song that sounds like a secret lost bonus track from Discovery right down to that specific wah sound on the guitar.
Starlight - The Supermen Lovers: There was all this news last year that Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust was getting remastered and rereleased for its 20th anniversary and was going to finally be on streaming services that seems to have just.. not happened. It never materialized so now I'm stuck listening to the 2nd rate but still extremely good Music Sounds Better With You knockoff, Starlight by the worst named band ever The Supermen Lovers. The songs aren't even that similar particularly but that's just my personal feelings.
Girlsrock - Siriusmo: A friend of mine is a sort of expert on the whole Ed Banger mid-late 2000s electro scene and it's extremely good because he'll just send me songs like this every now and then that are totally sick and make it feel like there was somehow thousands of hours of this kind of music produced at that time and only the tip of the iceberg made it to public consumption.
11:17 - Danger: Somehow I didn't even notice that Danger had a new album in January but I'm finally listening now and it's a proper return to form and really, really good. This song sounds like if the haunted VHS tape from the The Ring was taped over an 80s workout video.
Ultrasonic Sound - Hive: I went to a 20th anniversary screening of The Matrix at The Astor and great news: that movie still kicks ass and rocks completely and has possibly gotten better in the two decades since its release. Someone had curated a really good mix that they were playing in the foyer after the movie and this song was in it. A heady mix of drum and bass and nu-metal guitar crunch that feels like a 1999 calendar picked up by a strong wind and slapping you in the face.
Homo Deus VII - Deantoni Parks: STILL loving and finding new things to love about this Deantoni Parks album for the third month in a row. I'm repeating myself but this music is just so good and feels so completely original to me. It's a great mix of complete technical mastery and the self imposed limitations of a restricted sample palette. Forcing himself to do absolutely everything he can with the sound and fairly well exhausting it over the course of 9 minutes.
Catacomb Kids - Aesop Rock: There's a good line to trace between this and Acid King by Malibu Ken where Aesop Rock's been thinking about Ricky Kasso for like ten years now which is interesting. There's lots of just very nice sounding lines in this like "Crispy the godsender who thunk over a quarter plunk to local Mortal Kom vendor". Just good weird word combos painting a very impressionistic picture of growing up. "deplanting cadavers" "zoo-keeper facelift". Very nice.
Mask Off - Future: I've never listened to Future much which is weird because he's very good but this is a song that just comes into my head pretty often. Metro Boomin's brain is huge and the vibe he created on this is just amazing. Wringing this sort of atmosphere out of the sample without sacrificing any of the trap beat at the center of it is such an achievement.
Old Town Road (Remix) - Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus: Everything that could ever be said about Old Town Road has probably already been written by now but my favourite part is finding out that the sample is from Ghosts by Nine Inch Nails which means it's also Trent Reznor's first writing credit on a #1 song. Absolutely praying for Trent and Atticus to join Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus on stage at the Grammys to perform this.
Claudia Lewis - M83: Every so often I remember just how good Hurry Up We're Dreaming is and listen to it on repeat for a while. It's absolutely amazing. Start to finish (except for Raconte-Moi Une Historie which SUCKS) it's just fantastic. I looked up why this song is called Claudia Lewis and it turns out that has an extremely good answer "I was surfing the web & found this website with space poems – Claudia Lewis had 3-4 space poems on this site. They were pretty bad space poems but I found it super moving, there was something very innocent about it. She’s probably super young like 12 or 14 but I don’t know her or how she looks or anything about her. I just know that she writes cheesy space poems."
OK Pal - M83: Every single musical element of this song is just perfect. I love the huge broad chords, the synth bends, the massive drums, the inverted Dead Flag Blues monologue. It's just beautiful.Little Secrets - Passion Pit: Passion Pit is currently on a 10th anniversary tour for Manners and I feel age 100 which is no good. But this song is good and it contains in my opinion one of the all time greatest drum fills after the first chorus. Huge, super air-drummable, and very functional: perfect.
Blood - City Calm Down: I think "I'm the one who wants your blood" is just such a great an evocative refrain and I wish he said it one million times more in this song.
Television - City Calm Down: Absolutely love the idea of writing a song about how bloody TV is the bloody opiate of the masses that sounds like a Clash cover in 2019 and sounding so deliberately out of the zeitgeist and doing it so well and with such conviction that it’s absolutely great.
I Am The Resurrection - The Stone Roses: We went to Andrew McLelland's Finishing School and he played this as his last song in honour of Easter Sunday and described it as the greatest piece of acoustic dance music he's ever heard which is honestly not a bad description - it's an absolute jam.
Daisy - Pond: It's very cool that there's like an evil, mirror version of Tame Impala that exists in Pond. I think every band should have that.
Crying Lighting - Arctic Monkeys: Basically the reason this song is on this list is because I got stuck in a loop of saying "your pastimes, consisted of the strange and twisted and deranged and I hate that little game you had called "crying lightning" in a Werner Herzog voice to myself and I thought it was funny.
Keeping Time - Angie McMahon: Angie McMahon is so damn good at songs and I cannot believe it! She's only got like 5 and they're all incredible. She’s gonna be huge!
The House That Heaven Built - Japandroids: Sterogum had a really good writeup the other day about Post-Nothing turning 10 years old that turned into a wrap up of why Japandroids are such a good band and why Celebration Rock is a perfect album and it really crystallized a lot of my feelings about them. They're number one on my list of Bands That Make You Want To Start A Band for a good reason and this article really nails the whole young men figuring it all out feeling of Japandroids' music. I really think both Japandroids albums should be called Youth And Young Manhood but Kings Of Leon already took that name. I remember when my friend first turned me on to Post-Nothing he said he didn't want to tell anyone else except me because it was so good and it was Best Friends Music and I really believe that. It’s best friends music through and through. When I saw them a couple of years ago it was as part of a sort of impromptu road trip with my best friend and I think that was the best context I could have given it. It's absolutely one of the best shows I've been to in my life and also Osher Gunsberg was in the crowd behind me but that's not part of the story. https://www.stereogum.com/2041439/japandroids-post-nothing-turns-10/franchises/the-anniversary/
Motor Runnin - Pist Idiots: The pub rock revival just keeps getting better and better. At the minute it's basically just Bad//Dreems, West Thebarton and these guys but I'm sure there's a million other bands bubbling under that are just about to break as well. I love this song, it's just straight up old fashioned pissed off rock and roll that somehow doesn't feel old fashioned at all.
Chains - As Cities Burn: As Cities Burn have reunited and have a new album coming out and I'm extremely wary of it because they're potentially ruining their previously discussed perfect streak. This is the first single and it's.. good I guess. It's kind of just normal and sort of outdated, a little bit of a step backward into safety for a band that was always changing and moving forward. I think I have a worm living in my brain though because I keep listening to it just because I really love the drum sound. They're very nicely mixed. Some very nice sounding drums.
Whacko Jacko Steals The Elephant Man's Bones - The Fall Of Troy: I was talking with some friends about young musicians because of Billie Eilish, and so we were talking about how Alanis Morrisette won a grammy when she was 21 and Taylor Swift won a grammy when she was 20 and Lorde made Royals when she was 17 and all that but what people don't realise is Thomas Erak wrote Doppelganger when he was 20 and it was his second album. He's 34 now and his music sucks badly. That's insane. What will happen to me when I'm 34? Chilling to think about.
A New Uniform / Patagonia - Tera Melos: I think Patagonian Rats is still my favourite Tera Melos album. Toss up between that and Untitled actually. But I love this one for how cohesive it feels. For a band whose whole ethos is chaos it's amazing how well it all comes together as a complete work tied up with a bow by the Skin Surf reprise near the end. I love this song because it's two sketches of songs tied together into one little chaotic lump and the big Primary! Secondary! finale is just so satisfying.
Talking Heads - Black Midi: Black Midi finally have actually proper recorded songs on spotify! The way Black Midi is getting talked about at the moment really feels like the days of blog buzz are back, it's crazy. If you haven't seen it yet here's the KEXP session that's rightfully getting them so much attention https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMn1UuEIVvA I've watched it so many times and it's really something. The best part is the comments are full of music dudes just naming every band ever. "this sounds like if slint, polvo and hella did crack and had a gangbang" yuck "imagine them opening for Swans and/or Daughters" yuck "they're like if Minute Men and Frank Zappa had a baby and that baby dated the child of Talking Heads and Can but then got dumped for their best friend who was adopted and raised by their single parent Voivod but they were cool and stayed friends and listened to Tortoise and Thelonious Monk and got stoned and started a band and conquered the world." yuck "Slint meets Sonic youth meets Pere Ubu meets drive like jehu meets Beefheart...these guys took all that is deranged and twisted in rock and made one big soup of it!" yuck. Anyway the point is they rock completely and here's my addition to the band names: the way he sings sounds like Sting lol.
Walking On The Moon - The Police: This song makes you dumb I think. It's like the dumbest song in the world and listening to it makes your brain mushier, which makes you dumb and stupid. It's very good.
Rubber Bullies - Tropical Fuck Storm: I saw Tropical Fuck Storm opening for Kurt Vile the other day and it was absolutely incredible. My first time seeing them properly, not counting the live soundtrack they did for No Country For Old Men which was was a whole different kind of amazing. It feels like Gaz has finally put together a band that can keep up with is ferocious energy and the result is scary - they basically tore the place apart which makes them a funny opener for Kurt Vile who was as chilled out, relaxed and fun as you'd expect. They played this song near the end of their set and somehow I hadn't really noticed it when I listened to the album but now I can't stop listening to it. It's so good. I love the increasing paranoia of the backing vocals, especially in the last verse as it builds and builds.
Taman Shud - The Drones: This might be the best Drones song. It's a list that's constantly being revised in my head but it's top 5 definitely. It's nice listening to Feeling Kinda Free now knowing what he was going to do with Tropical Fuck Storm because it's all here. Fighting against the constraints of his regular sound and regular songwriting and eventually finding the solution in forming a whole new band. I love this song for a million reasons but the escalation of the disregard is very good. “I don't care about Andrew Bolt or Ned Kelly or the southern cross or the union jack” and you're nodding and then he says ‘I don't really care if you're a pedophile’ and you're nodding but slower. I get what he means in terms of media hype and whatever but it's still a very funny line. Anyway "why'd I give a rats about your tribal tats? You came here on a boat you fucking cunt" is grade A.
Dawn Patrol - Megadeth: The best thing about Megadeth is the sort of half baked politics. Dave Mustaine is the best kind of moron, he engages with everything at a gut level but believes he's being very cerebral about it at the same time. This little intro song about a nuclear post-apocalypse is so good because it's a legitimate warning and a response to legitimate worries but it's also like.. wouldn't that be sick if we had to wear gas masks and carry assault rifles around because all the nukes exploded and everyone was dead. What if there was zombies.
Rust In Peace... Polaris - Megadeth: The story behind Holy Wars... The Punishment Due is so good. "Mustaine has said that at a show in Antrim, Northern Ireland, he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale. He was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fund raising activities for "The Cause", explained as something to bring equality to Catholics and Protestants in the region. Liking how "The Cause" sounded as was explained to him, Mustaine dedicated a performance of "Anarchy In The UK" to it, causing the audience to riot. The band were forced to travel in a bulletproof bus after the show" I just love him. I'd like to share a Dave Mustain quotes about this song also. "I was driving home from Lake Elsanon. I was tailgating somebody, racing down the freeway, and I saw this bumper sticker on their car and it said, you know, this tongue in cheek stuff like, ‘One nuclear bomb could ruin your whole day,’ and then I looked on the other side and it said, ‘May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace,’ and I’m going, ‘'Rust in Peace.’ Damn, that’s a good title.‘ And I’m thinking like, 'What do they mean, rust in peace?’ I could just see it now – all these warheads sitting there, stockpiled somewhere like seal beach, you know, all covered with rust and stuff with kids out there spray-painting the stuff, you know." Goes ahead and writes a kick ass song from the perspective of a nuclear warhead containing the line "rotten egg air of death wrestles your nostrils".
Planet B - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard: King Gizz are Megadeth now and I love it! The cold war is global warming now and we desperately need new thrash metal about it to save us!
Primodial Wound - Inter Arma: If you can't tell by me including three of their songs on this playlist I'm still having an absolute time with Inter Arma. Something I really love about this band is their ability to sit in a vibe for so long and expand on it. They're not songs with narrative arcs and multiple contrasting sections, they're songs that just kind of dig deeper on themselves. This one starts deep and then by thinning out entirely at around 6 minutes in only gets darker.
Howling Lands - Inter Arma: This song made me dream of a Dark Souls game where Inter Arma does the soundtrack. It's a peabrained thought but it's one that really got me thinking. This is boss music of the highest order: a song seemingly about itself and the hellbound denizens cursed to perform it in the arena of hell.
Sulphur English - Inter Arma: It's extremely funny to listen to this song a bunch of times and be completely blown away by the total power and ethereal majesty of it and then look up the lyrics to find out that it's about Trump in that very good way of putting normal thoughts through a metal lyrics filter "The charlatan sets his eyes towards the throne / tongue adrip in revolting ecstasy" "Sever the corrupt tongue of the imperious fool / silence the gangrenous root of his abhorrent voice"
Peepin' Tom - Courtney Barnett: When I saw Kurt Vile he brought out Courtney Barnett to play Over Everything as an encore and it was so good to see just how much a hometown crowd loves her. Everyone lost their shit! We love our good friend Courtney! I think I've written about this before but Peeping Tom is one of my favourite Kurt Vile songs and I think Courtney's version is even better. Her voice is perfect for it and she really has to show off her range to do it which I love. The super deep 'peeping' to the high cascading 'tom' is a perfect musical moment to me.

Earth Premiere "The Mandrake's Hymn" & Interview / Guitar.com
Tumblr media
youtube
via guitar.com
Earth’s trajectory is not so much of an orbit as it is a deviation. For the past three decades, the only constant for the band headed by Dylan Carlson has been change – which is ironic for a group whose music relies heavily upon repetition.
Earth started out with ground-shaking seismic drone metal on 1993’s Earth 2, then took a left turn in 2005 into the arid West with the Morricone-inspired Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method. Almost a decade later, they ventured into meditative rock with Primitive And Deadly.
Now, the band have purged themselves of any embellishments, stripping instrumentation down to Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion. The upcoming record, Full Upon Her Burning Lips, is a lesson in austerity, and spotlights the duo’s sonic symbiosis.
Ahead of the release, we speak with Carlson about the record, his fascination with Telecaster pickups and his favourite collaborations thus far.

Dylan Carlson (left) and Adrienne Davies of Earth
The new album sees Earth stripped down to the core duo of you and Adrienne Davies. Can you shed more light on this decision?
Well, I’ve been playing with Adrienne for almost 20 years now, and on previous albums, I’ve been fortunate enough to play with a lot of amazing players, but I really wanted this album to focus on the two main members at this point. Just because we really haven’t done that since, probably, Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method.
I also felt like live drums have always been a big part of what Earth does, but that has never come across as fully on record. You know, because when you’re recording a bunch of different instruments, you need to leave room for stuff, and I always felt like the drums didn’t show the full potential that Adrienne’s capable of.
And then also, I’ve always sort of been the guy that holds everything down with my guitar and let a lot of other instruments carry the melodic work – whether it’s cello or keys or stuff like that. So I sort of wanted it to just be the two of us showing off the best of our abilities.
The previous records, they’ve all been very lush sounding and I wanted this one to be very present and dry, and upfront. Using the 70s style, you know, where I was running two amps for the basics and hard panning guitars left and right – the kind of stuff that you just don’t really hear any more on record.
Can you tell us a little more about the title Full Upon Her Burning Lips?
I’m always trying to find titles that I feel are numinous and open to multiple interpretations. Many of them, I don’t necessarily see and people tell me about them later. Like someone recently asked if [the title] was about the moon because of the “full upon” bit – which I hadn’t thought of.
I feel like music is a sensual and sensuous experience, so I wanted a title that could evoke that. Originally, the cover idea I had for Primitive And Deadly was going to be much sexier than it turned out. I was sort of on a Scorpions jag at the time [laughs]. I think a lot of music now is missing that element. There’s so much music that’s hyper-male. To me, Metallica is a perfect example – nothing in their music or lyrics reflect the idea that there’s a feminine principle to the universe. So, I guess that’s where it came from.
youtube
You mentioned in a statement that you like the “limiting of materials to force oneself to employ even more creatively”. How did that reflect in terms of guitar tone for this album?
For this one I basically used a limited number of effects. I used my live rig, which was like a compressor, an overdrive, a Uni-Vibe and a delay. I mean I used one other overdrive for some cleaner textures and an auto wah on one track, but I pretty much tried to limit it to just the pedals that I use live.
I tried to get the most out of them. For example, I’ve used the Uni-Vibe for a long time, but I’ve always just used the vibrato setting. I never thought the chorus was very useful, and then on this album, I figured out a bunch of really cool sounds with that setting. So that was fun to use in a different way than I normally do.

A lot of artists tend to compose instrumental music around tension and release. Is that an approach that you take as well?
I guess so, but I don’t know if it’s a conscious one. I feel like all songs should have some kind of arc – I call it a “narrative arc”. Although [with instrumental music] it’s very loose, as there’s obviously not any lyrics telling you what the story is. I sort of – in this very abstract sense – feel like songs and albums should still have a narrative arc. And I hope we convey that in the way that I put stuff together.
Again, it’s a sort of an abstract notion of a narrative, but you know, a song should start somewhere and then go somewhere, in some sort of rudimentary sense. I think that’s why, with instrumental music, the song titles become important. It’s the only way of conveying some kind of narrative with language.
I feel like music is a language in and of itself, and [communicates] in a different way. Music is simultaneously more immediate and more abstract in its meaning. With instrumental music, the audience is also participating in the creation of the meaning or the narrative or the imagery.
It’s not like songs with lyrics where it’s like “Oh my baby left me” or whatever. With instrumental music, it’s more challenging.
This album has a lot of minimalism and repetition. How do you make repetitions sound like progression to the listener?
With repetitive music especially, be it like the riff or the melody or whatever, it should be something that you want to hear again. So I think crafting really memorable riffs is key. They should be something that you want to hear again, and the riffs themselves should have some kind of arc to them as well – so that you’re getting mini arcs that build up to a bigger arc.
That’s one thing I’m constantly trying to do. When I come up with a riff it’s like “Oh, is this something like worth repeating?” There’s that thing that great riffs have where they make you want to hear them again. Whether they’re catchy or whatever, I feel like they should be strong enough – and interesting enough – that they bear repetition.

Folklore is a major theme of this album, as it is with much of your work. What draws you to it?
To me, with the music I make, I want it to be timeless and feel like it’s always been there. Folklore has stories and knowledge that have been around forever, transcending cultures. I also feel like, especially with rock music – for lack of a better term – and American music, are all originally from folk sources. You know, blues, jazz, country, rock ’n’ roll – the music is not “high culture”. It’s not like classical music in that it wasn’t created by rich people for other rich people.
It’s popular music from the people, embedded in the salt of the earth, and it’s the same with folklore. It’s interesting and it’s numinous. It’s got a quality of timelessness, like something that’s always been there and that goes along with what I try to do hopefully musically.
Has your gear changed much over the years?
Yeah, I would say so. When I first came back to guitar playing, I hadn’t had a guitar for at least four years. So when I came back to guitar in 2001 or 2002, I was really into gear and was always buying petals. I guess you could call it GAS. But along the way, I realised that it didn’t really matter what I played, it was going to be me like regardless. And so I got a lot less gear-obsessed.
I like gear obviously – I mean, I love guitar – and I’ve found things that allow me to translate what’s in my head better, but I don’t feel like they’re necessary. I’m going to sound like me regardless of what I’m given. I think a lot of people are always looking for that “magic box” or this amp or that amp. At the end of the day, it’s you, you know?
The gear I do get now, I get it because I like how it sounds – which is the most important thing – and then whether it’s functional and helps me with touring. Number one is the sound and number two is functionality and whether it makes my life easier. Those are sort of two of my guiding principles.
Right now I play my live rig which I’m very happy with because I discovered these Trace Elliot Elfs, 200-watt heads that weigh like a pound – I’ve got two of those. And then one has a 1×12 Dietz cab, which I love. The Jesus Lizard guys use them, and Buzz [Osborne] has one. I didn’t know about them before, I was just in Austin and I needed a cab. Yeah, it weighs a shit-tonne, but that’s the only downside to it. It’s got wheels, but it’s a little monster. Then for the other one, I have a 1×12 Mesa cab that’s semi-open.
And then I recorded the album with and did my solo tour with a Burman – it’s a British amp from the early 70s. They were a company out of Newcastle and they basically built these 100-watt power amps called the “Slaves” which ran for either KT66s or EL34s – mine’s got EL34s – and then they did various preamp modules. So they were kind of ahead of the curve, in a certain way.

You’ve obviously played a lot of guitars over the years. Do you have any favourites?
Yeah, my favourite guitar is the one my wife Holly bought. It has an alder Strat body, and then we had our friend, this artist Jason Borders, carve and stain it. It has no finish. It’s got a Fender neck, the classic player one, with a 12-inch radius pau ferro fretboard, and then I’ve got a brass tremolo. I love brass, I’ve had brass on pretty much all of my guitars that I can. This guitar’s also got a brass bridge and a brass nut.
And then I’ve been running a DiMarzio Fast Track Tele bridge pickup, DiMarzio Cruiser in the middle position, and a DiMarzio Air Classic in the neck. I’m a big DiMarzio fanboy, as you can tell [laughs].
Oh, and this guitar has a little thing called the StratoBlaster which was made by Alembic. It’s a little boost switch – I have mine set for about plus 7- or 8dB, but you can go all the way to 14dB. That’s nice if you want a little bit of oomph.
I have a Tele, it was one of the Roadworn ones which I guess came out in the mid-2000s. That’s got a DiMarzio Tone Zone Tele bridge and a Seymour Duncan Little ‘59 in the neck.
In Europe, I have two guitars that live in a warehouse. I have an Epiphone SG. That one’s got a DiMarzio Tone Zone Tele bridge pickup and a Super Distortion in the neck. I was in a big Jerry Garcia phase then so I got a OBEL (or On-Board Effects Loop) on it, although I very rarely used it [laughs]. And the other’s an Epiphone Explorer that has a DiMarzio Super Distortion Tele bridge pickup. I basically put Tele Bridge pickups in all my guitars.
Some of my guitars have names. Like my favourite one – the Strat or Hollycaster – I call “The Fox”. Tele is “The Cat” and the SG is “The Goddess” because it has a big sticker of Tara Guanyin on it.

Do you achieve noise through the amps?
I use a lot of gain. Well, maybe not a lot of gain but I push the amps with the compressor and overdrive. With the 200-watt headroom, you’re not going to make it break up, so the tone is really a combination of pickups, overdrive and my hands. It’s not the amp. Same with the Burman – it’s a 100-watt – so the headroom’s massive.
If I’m playing a smaller tube amp, like when I had a 50-watt Plexi for a while, I didn’t use overdrive. I just hit the front end hard with the compressor. That was still like, loud as fuck. Over the years, I’ve come to understand headroom and the fact that no one really needs anything more than 50 watts. Even that is overkill, really, for most venues. Back in Earth 2 days, when I didn’t know any better, and I was young and could lug a shit-tonne of gear, it was like, “Oh yeah, let’s have, all this ridiculous amount of equipment!”. Back then most soundmen didn’t even bother mic-ing us, you know? Now I understand to let the PA do the heavy lifting.
I understand we all grew up on the cool pictures of [Jimi] Hendrix in front of a wall of Marshalls. But there were no PAs and they were playing outdoors half the time. Of course, you need like 25 Marshalls or whatever! It was a different time, with a 100-watt head now you’re never going to get to that sweet spot at a volume that’s not going to kill people.
Let’s talk about collaborations for just a second. What would you say has been your best experience so far?
Well, I love working with Kevin [Martin, aka The Bug]. It’s a whole different world than the one I am used to inhabiting. So it’s very fun for me in that way because I just get to be the guitar player and be creative.
I also love Emma [Ruth Rundle]. I think she’s an amazing musician and a wonderful human being, so that was enjoyable. And with Maddy Prior, that was super because obviously I was really into English folk. Yeah, so getting to meet an OG [laughs] and she was a lovely, lovely woman and really easy to work with. She had written a song and asked me to play guitar on it and I got to just come in and do it.
They’re all incredibly talented and really lovely people, so they’ve all been a real pleasure to work with.
What was recording Concrete Desert like? Would you do something like that again?
Yeah, I’ve been talking to Kevin about it! [Concrete Desert] was our very first collaboration, and he basically sent me the tracks and I played guitar and sent them back. So we actually hadn’t even met in person at that point. I actually just ran into him in on the street in Krakow because we were both playing the same festival.
Then Ninja Tune wanted us to play this anniversary party in LA together, and he had this material and was like, “Hey, why don’t we do this again?” and we were actually in the studio together for a couple days. I mean, he’d already generated much of the material but then after I put my guitar on, he went back and changed it a bunch. He told me he got new ideas from the guitar parts and kinda tweaked it.
But yeah, hopefully the next time we work together we can do it with both of us in the studio, building stuff from the ground up. I don’t know when that’ll happen, but we definitely want to do something together again.
Are there any other guitarists you feel are pushing the instrument to the bleeding edge?
I think Oren Ambarchi is pretty amazing. There’s probably some guys I’m not aware of, but I know Oren and think he’s a pretty good dude. I’m a rock dude and like the fact that he still manages to inject rock into [his music] in some weird way, like with that album he did with the Ace Frehley cover, for example. I think he’s got a lot of swagger to it that others don’t have.
