you can’t write good vampire fiction unless you’re at least a little bit religious. but it can only be a little bit. you need the spice and the self-loathing but it’s got to be tempered by genuine introspection and homoeroticism. it needs to be melodramatic, but like, prestige melodrama. and nobody can show you the world as seen through the eyes of a creature of the night like someone who was raised to see the world as simultaneously a lush, evil garden of potential sins and the most beautiful thing gifted to humanity. 

it’s like a bell curve with teeth marks in the middle. if you’re too religious, you get angsty-yet-unsatisfying stephenie meyerpires. if you’re not religious enough, you get sanitized tvd-type vampires. anne rice is the bite marks.
