Have you played VAESEN ?
By Free League Publishing
Tumblr media
Vaesen is a horror game that takes place in 19th century Scandinavia, and is inspired by Scandinavian folklore. You are part of the Society, and organisation who solve mysteries around conflict between human an vaesen. These vaesen are creatures of stories, who either help or hinder human, but are unseen by most. There are those that can see them though, Thursday's Children who are blessed (or cursed) with The Sight. With time more and more conflicts appear between vaesen and the humans who live nearby, as industrialisation pushes civilisation further and further into nature and the supernatural seems to grow stronger.
Vaesen is based on the book "Vaesen: Spirits and Monsters of Scandinavian Folklore" by Johan Egerkrans, and uses the Year Zero Engine. The game alternates between solving mysteries and dealing with whatever problems appear at your base, Castle Gyllencreutz in Upsala, Sweden.
(Poll Runner note : There is a french translation, and as a bonus, the translators did a bestiary book dedicated to my region. Nice touch)

In dark forests, beyond the mountains, by black lakes in hidden groves. At your doorstep. In the shadows, something stirs. Strange beings. Twisted creatures, lurking at the edge of vision. Watching. Waiting. Unseen by most, but not by you. You see them for what they really are. Vaesen. Welcome to the Mythic North – northern Europe of the nineteenth century, but not as we know it today. A land where the myths are real. A cold reach covered by vast forests, its few cities lonely beacons of industry and enlightenment – a new civilization dawning. But in the countryside, the old ways still hold sway. There, people know what lurks in the dark. They know to fear it. Vaesen – Nordic Horror Roleplaying is based on the work of Swedish illustrator and author Johan Egerkrans, Vaesen presents a dark Gothic setting steeped in Nordic folklore and old myths of Scandinavia. The game mechanics use an adapted version of the award-winning Year Zero Engine.

For our Vaesen campaign. Meet Vili and Ve, the more recent inhabitants of the swedish fjords, twin baby unicorns, a true miracle. I don't usually ✨paint✨but it felt fitting for the illustration. I hope you like it despite the many things it lacks :)

Scene from my friends' monthly Vaesen campaign. Pictured: The Sadults (all 3 people in this scene have lost a spouse and child) None of these people has slept.
There is one more adult in the party but he is currently babysitting the three 20 year olds that went chasing ghosts (and I do not know whether he has lost anyone, that is secret knowledge) The other two (Karlotta and Søren) don't know that Erich has lost a child though, they only know about his Alive Child (who is one of said 20yos in the party)
These 3 hung back while the rest of the gang decided to investigate the "possible ghost" in the castle and are being depressed in the library. This scene started out with Søren talking to Karlotta about quitting alcohol but not going about it in a healthy way and Erich interjected himself because hes A Doctor and wants to help
The 3 of them ended up commiserating about lost loved ones but Erich's attempts at comforting Søren ended up getting uno reverse'd and instead Karlotta helped him feel a little better about the situation with his son (in the last session Erich got possessed and tried to kill him so now they're Really awkward)

Rot in the North - A Vaesen Game - NPCs
So I'm running a Vaesen campaign for @juk3box, @boomarrows and @leeminarium . And now I've made it a goal for myself to draw every NPC in the game, even if it's a dumb doodle. Enjoy.

the character to the left is my character Ragnhild Bergheim, the girl to the right is Sophia Harjula, a girl I adopted last session lol.

i never uploaded this character's whole design and im HERE TO FIX THAT!! ! Top right sketch by the amazing Kinseviing (Twitter), rest of the art by me. This is Lawrence, my Vaesen PC, and there's more info about her below the cut.
Lawrence is a Stone Troll. You're not supposed to play as mythological beings, the Vaesen, in Vaesen RPG- you can be an investigator, hunter, religious person, or even a witch, but you're human. Or mostly human. However, my storyteller was gracious enough to go with my stupid idea and let me play as a Servant archetype regular girl most of the campaign. Lawrence, supressing her "inner troll" and making an innate use of her true shapeshifting abilities, posed as a human for almost 20 sessions. Now stakes are getting higher than we thought possible and Lawrence's been able to meet another human-infiltrated troll and a cathedral gargoyle that are trying to help her come to terms with her true nature, an arch that I'm dying to explore further and that my table's managing so incredibly well! Lawrence's caring, big, soft, attentive, strong and a huge lesbian with TWO love interests that are also very interested in one another- her charge as a servant, a private investigator named Dhwani Edevane, and the group's nun, Lydia. The rest of our group includes a writer named Rúna with odd deals going on, and a forest witch, Valentina, together with a bunch of animals, some smaller vaesen and 4 NPCs. They're a little familiy to go back every Thursday. It's been so much fun so far ;;
