I love the US Ghosts so I watched the UK Ghosts because I’ve seen people love that more, but I gotta say the English sense of humor is way more anxiety inducing lmao

like in the US version, they’ve got an issue in the middle and then they fix it by the end of the episode, but in the UK one they try so so hard to fix the issue and then it just comes crashing down in the last like three minutes

as a north american who's a huge britcom fan it's so interesting to me that it feels like every other british comedian originally came from a double act (which seems much less popular here)

#like vic and bob. mitchell and webb. punt and dennis. fry and laurie. lee and herring #and my favs (rik and ade)#i also feel like the comedy scene is a lot more geographically concentrated and also tight knit there so it must be easier to find #the other half to ur comedy duo?? Coco Khan: When the rumors started to surface just before the weekend that Channel 4 were going to broadcast a potentially career-ending expose...did you know who it would be?

Nish Kumar: Yes, this is a well known open secret from the comedy circuit. It's been something that's been talked about certainly to my knowledge for at least the last five years. It's something that's been pretty openly discussed in the comedy industry. I think I remember first hearing about it in mid-2017. Subsequent to Dispatches and the Sunday Time expose, Deadline ran a story about an incident that happened on a TV show called Roast Battle where jokes were made referencing Brand being an abuser and they were removed from the broadcast... from that point onwards it was common knowledge...It was discussed by multiple comedians in Edinburgh Fringe shows the following year, in 2018. It was that well known.

Coco: But when you say it was well known like what was well known?

Nish: to be completely honest with you the story that I had heard was relating to a sexual assault it was not covered in the documentary, so it was a very specific and serious allegation. I was not aware of any of the stories in the documentary. I was surprised watching it how far back this had gone.

I think this is a real moment for everybody to consider how this was allowed to happen and how this was allowed to go on for so long.... I think if you look at Russell Brand's IMDB page you see that his television work in Britain starts to dry up around 2018, 2019 and that's simply because increasingly people were just not willing to work with him. Everyone was afraid to talk about it because of the threat of lawsuits... Watching it as a cisgender heterosexual male comedian you feel a certain sense of guilt and a certain sense of complicity because you've been working with production companies and producers who are providing an infrastructure that allows predators to thrive.

There are still people working in comedy who are the subject of open secrets...there are still people working in comedy who people will say 'oh we don't send young women into their dressing rooms'. Now at that stage for me you should be sacked... if you can't have someone be around young women they have no place in any kind of workplace.

#thinking abt how after that nepo babies article there was a uk version #talking about how virtually all of showbiz here is nepo and/or privately educated #i mean just look at how many comedians joke about being at oxbridge #(also working class actors have been talking about this for ages #about how the industry is becoming less friendly to working class people than it was #which still was never great)#imo thats the root of the ''people like me'' line #and it lands a lot better here than it ever can in the us #where people have only ever seen him as wealthy #and class analysis in general in the us is uhhhh not good
