Marlo Thomas:

Marlo is an Emmy award winning actress and feminist. She is also the outreach director for St. Jude’s Children Hospital which was founded by her father, Danny Thomas. Her show “That Girl” was one of the first sitcoms to focus on a single woman and helped pave the way for other similar shows like the Mary Tyler Moore Show. The network and the show’s sponsor wanted to end the series with the main character getting married but Marlo fought against it: “…They wanted to end the show with a wedding. I said, "I just can't do that to these women and girls who followed Ann Marie's adventure. I can't now say that the only happy ending is a wedding, because I don't believe it." There was a big ruckus about it, but I wouldn't do it. The last show, Ann Marie took Donald (her fiancé) to a women's lib meeting, which made nobody happy but me. I loved it.“

Along with having stunning dark eyes and iconic hair, Marlo Thomas helped lead the way for shows about young unmarried women living on their own. While it's true that That Girl's heroine Ann Marie had a steady boyfriend throughout, Marlo Thomas was instrumental in keeping her unmarried through the show's run and resisted ending the series with a wedding. Especially in the early seasons, she not only gave the character a charming wistful style (Ann Marie was almost always shown carrying a ladylike pair of gloves when she went out, long after convention dictated), but she kept the character from being too sweet with her comic exaggerations and feisty comebacks.

Why do DnP have such a large transmasc/lesbian following?

Hi! So I put out a general feeler post about this, and it seems like y’all are interested in a big ass post about Dan and Phil’s relationship with their LGBT audience. Click on the read more for a bit of unhinged analysis.

I have… a lot to say on this matter, and tbf I warned you it would be long. This will mostly be focused on the wlw (specifically lesbian) and transmasc experience with DnP. Before I get into it, I wanna state that I am NOT transmasc. I’m a he/they afab lesbian, but I am in no way talking over any transmascs who have differing experiences. This post will mostly deal with the AFAB experience, as I am not AMAB and can’t speak for our lovely transfems/enbies/cis men! I love you guys, and I would love to hear about your experiences too, though! I’m going to be using as much non-gendered language as I can, however I’m talking about some pretty gendered topics so bear with me. One more thing to note is that when researching this, I found a lot more examples of Dan shouting exact communities out. This is a post about them both, as they are both extremely important to queer communities! It’s just that Dan has generally done more press runs relating solely to his sexuality, so there is more content there. I’m sure I’m missing a lot, though, and if anyone has more Phil focused clips/screenshots I would love to link them here. This is very much a work in progress post, I’m sure I’ll be adding more later and if you have screenshots/clips/anything, my dms and my submissions are open! Okay, done with disclaimers for now, I think. This post will be split up into a few sections: DnP talking about the LGBT community (both pre and coming out), how they empower their wlw following, how they affirm transmasc identities and what they mean to the LGBT community as icons. I would like this post to be free of any in-fighting drama, both from the Phandom and LGBT side of things. We are all awesome! 

Dan and Phil are both queer men who came out after acquiring a large fanbase that was predominantly AFAB (love you transfems and cis dudes going strong btw). However, a community that started out as a common “fangirl” fanbase over the years has shifted into a predominantly LGBT fandom with a disproportionate amount of specifically transmascs and lesbians. The word fangirl was often thrown around as an insult to people like us back in the day, but I think it makes perfect sense that a group of disenfranchised, young, queer AFABs would be drawn to DnP. Both of them were, for obvious in hindsight reasons, vocal supporters of the community. I can’t find an unedited version of the clip, but this clip from 2017 is a great example of that. Correct me if I’m wrong, but not a lot of non-out YouTubers educated their community in the way that Dan does in this clip.  I think sometimes it’s lost to time how bad YouTube used to be, that 2013-2017 time period was peak anti-SJW era. As basic as what he said was, somebody with his level of influence taking the time to educate his audience on queer issues as a presumed straight man was very meaningful. This not only created a safespace for young, queer AFABs but also made their specific audience more saturated with us than your typical “straight” YouTuber of the day. Their audience shares more demographic similarities with someone like Tyler Oakley than someone like Zoella, which makes sense in recent years.

This tweet from Dan from before he was out displays my point perfectly. To my enby ass, things like this meant the world to me and I can imagine it’s much the same for my transmascs out there. Going back to the clip earlier, though, I think that how willing to break gender norms they both were had even more of an effect in attracting transmascs who hadn’t yet fully discovered themselves. This isn’t denying that a lot of transmascs who were already out were drawn to DnP! Most of my Phandom friends were actually transmen back in the day. However, I think in retrospect there’s a huge pipeline from going into the fanbase as a cis person to coming out of it as… not. It makes perfect sense to me that a generation of transmascs would be drawn to and model themselves after the two of them. Going back to the YouTube landscape of the time, even their contemporaries had a much meaner edge that DnP just never had. This unfortunately made them targets of their fellow “vaguely emo relatable YouTuber” scene; people like Shane Dawson and Onision immediately come to mind, at the time they would have been in a similar category but in retrospect are nothing alike. There was an air of cruelty that Dan and Phil never fed into, consistently remaining themselves. I think that as a baby transmasc, people who stayed loyal to their principals even when it wasn’t the cool thing to do was really empowering. In a time when my friends were all fans of LeafyIsHere, Dan and Phil weren’t afraid to be kind. To be soft, even with the context we have now of how scary that really was. After BIG/COTY dropped, it was easy to see why they were great queer role models.  But I’d argue that they’d always been this, even before we knew they were queer.

This one will be a little bit more personal, but I would like to start this section out with a personal anecdote. I grew up in a fairly liberal household, in which I was told being gay was just fine. However, my mother just so happened to use the word ‘lesbian’ as a descriptor for any woman she thought was “unsuitable”. Ugly, boyish, mean, it didn’t matter; to me, lesbian was an unmistakably bad word. I knew that the word didn’t mean that, but intrinsically I had never heard it as something positive until I heard Dan simply shout out the lesbians on a YouNow stream. Simple, right? Four years later, and BIG came out. I identified as a bisexual “who would never actually date a man ahaha” at the time, and it was life changing. Dan and Phil have frequently shouted out their lesbian fanbase over the years to the point where it’s developed into a bit of an inside joke. This is meaningful for a multitude of reasons, one of which being just how demonized not only the word but the group can be. Even when poking gentle fun, neither of them ever lean into hurtful stereotypes. I went to We’re All Doomed last November, and when Dan took his jumpsuit top off the audience screamed. He yelled into the mic “I thought you were all lesbians!”, to which the crowd screamed even louder. You can poke fun at each other without playing into things like the mean lesbian stereotype, for example, and I think it’s things like this which show that they have a genuine appreciation for their lesbian audience. I can only speak from my own experience when I say that I was originally drawn to them for their authenticity even in a hostile environment. I was a closeted lesbain who had grown attached to closeted gay men, because on a level I didn’t understand yet I related to them. It was a parasocial relationship that if I never had, I wouldn’t have come out. This section is a lot less objective than the others, because for me it’s impossible to look at this objectively. A lot of the reasons that transmascs would be drawn to DnP are why lesbians would, especially in a less than LGBT friendly era like the 2010s. They were never afraid to be perceived as weaker than their peers if that meant being kinder, and from a lesbian lens this wasn’t how I modeled my new relationship with gender off of but what I wished the world was like. I grew up with a deep, fundamental fear of men that is still there, but when I would watch actual sunshine Phil Lester and Winnie the Pooh ass Daniel Howell it made me realize that there are people out there who have your back.

I think this is where the conversation turns to now; we are mostly all adults, DnP have been out and proud for four years now. The pair have returned to YouTube (gloriously, might I add) and can talk openly about even the most mundane parts of being queer. Dan has been a very outspoken part of the community, doing a really lovely bit of standup about it. Watch it if you haven’t. I don’t think either of them are obligated to be spokesmen for the community, in a way I think one of the most powerful things they’ve done after BIG/COTY is to just continue living. Watching two queer people thrive how they have is incredibly important. They’re still just as great role models as they have ever been, just with nothing to hide this time. I think now that most of their younger fanbase has grown up, we’ve been very reflective of our past with the Phandom. Certainly not me (lie). It’s not a mystery to me, though, that two groups of closeted AFAB children would attach themselves to figures like DnP. The pair’s content encouraged a level of creativity, of believing in yourself against all odds that was and is unmatched to this day. We can moan about how much of a demonic fanbase we used to be, but the fact is that we turned out alright. People wonder why our fanbase feels like the most healthy parasocial family this side of Tumblr, and that’s because in a way we are. We were raised by these two British dudes to be how we are today; smart, funny and creative. All kids have a rough teenagehood, don’t they? It’s no wonder why queer kids would be drawn to a culture like this, one in which despite everything there is still hope that we will one day grow up to be our honest selves. Dan and Phil did, and so will we.

Thank you if you made it this far! I know this is a bit over sentimental, but they mean a lot to me. They did back in the day, and they definitely do now. after way too long, Act 1 is finally fucking done, yet the more I read it, the shorter it feels. I can’t tell if it’s because I don’t need to absorb the tutorial stuff due to being familiar with the comic already, or because I’m anticipating when shit really goes crazy later on. maybe a bit of both. it certainly preps me for the art style, the flowery language, the weird humor, and so on.

I can say that Act 1 is

fine.

it is of good quality.

nothing groundbreaking and not the best,

but enjoyable nonetheless.

I get that it’s a bit slow and nothing really happens, but I’m able to entertain myself with the page to page shenanigans and good character interactions.

especially the later part, so much Homestuck skipping was for the sake of immediately getting to the character interactions, but

there are character interactions here,

you learn who the characters even are.

like what the fuck, the introduction to the characters and their dynamics should be key to being invested in them, but I guess not because some people were able to just jump in the middle and grow attached while not knowing what the fuck is going on.

in conclusion: people who skipped Act 1 are cringe, and have doomed themselves. Act 1 good.

snow is fallin, all around you (wednesday x tyler)

Tyler’s mother had loved Christmas, always forced his excitable young self and his grouchy father out into the snow to play for hours on end. One of the rare times he’d seen his father truly smile, playing with him and his mother as snowflakes fell. But now those memories washed over him like a bucket of ice water, drowning any warm feelings that he may have felt.  Christmas was a time of dread in the Galpin household, his father bought him presents that he would pretend to enjoy out of sympathy, which would then never be touched again after Boxing Day. They’d sit there in silence as ill-fitting Christmas music played over a shitty stereo, his father drinking as Tyler looked at the pictures on the wall for a way out.  Morticia and Gomez’ invitation to the Addam’s Estate for the winter came at the most excellent time. His father had been cold, excuse the pun, since the investigation was closed and he had been protected from the authorities. Maybe his son committing such atrocities, or even him having to go against his own law book, had been enough for him to somewhat disown Tyler in his mind. Let alone the sheriff’s distaste for a certain black-haired beauty that may or may not have been his new master.

So, he went to the Addams’. For a family so backwards in the most eccentric way, their celebration was truly wonderful. Seeing Wednesday’s parents under the mistletoe, watching Pugsley wrap fairy lights around Thing so hard he lost circulation on his index. Even Wednesday got into the spirit for her family.  “Christmas is the celebration of false religion and commercialism. Nothing says Happy Birthday to God like buying out the Christmas decoration section at Walmart, or making silly little gingerbread men you’re bound to decapitate. I’d simply rather cut out the middle man, the middle man being Jesus, and decapitate the Ginger bastards on my own time.” Wednesday ranted, pacing back and forth. Tyler simply watched this outcry occur, noting this may have been the most she had ever spoken at one interval. Enid would’ve piped up if she’d been there, stepping in to at least try and defend the Christmas Spirit that laid dormant in her until November. Tyler hoped it was Wednesday becoming comfortable around him, but he assumed she simply really hated the Holidays. Probably as she was destined to return home, without him. 

Then seeing him turn up after Lurch had vanished for a few hours, collecting him from Jericho and landing him on the doorstep like a present from Krampus himself. Wednesday refused the smile that begged to take her lips, simply grabbing him and pulling him into the house and into her arms. He looked beautiful, his face and skin tinged red from the cold. She smelt intoxicating, he thought to himself in her embrace, like gasoline and cinnamon. He’d pay for not telling her Morticia’s plan sooner, but right now she just wanted to bask in his presence without thinking of homicide.  Satan, he had changed her. She loved thinking of homicide at the holidays. Waking up in Wednesday’s coffin, he noticed the heat that radiated from her form. Curled up around him, like a black cat. Arms still crossed over her chest, like that would change regardless of her sleeping state. A soft grin formed over his face, bringing his digits to unplait her hair from the night before. He’d had much practise now with her iconic braids, how to gently untangle them so he could redo it soon after. Standing behind her as she watched him in the mirror, instructing him what part of hair needed to go where. He got the hang of it, a self-proclaimed quick learner when it came to her commands. Nothing got her more than watching him focusing so heavily on her hair, then seeing his head duck to her neck, nipping and biting in a way that makes her positively shudder. She wakes up at his fingers grazing her scalp, and as soon as her eyes open to meet his he is back at square one again. Even the Hyde is humming in content, his Master looking up at him. The Hyde felt protected, safe. All because of the small little human. 

“Morning, monster.” He said affectionately, voice still dripping with sleep. It was a low rumble in his chest, next to his love’s ear. Tyler felt her shift at the nickname, making him feel somewhat more secure. “Morning.” Wednesday replies curtly, still not breaking the eye contact. She still couldn’t bring herself to call him a nickname, blaming the PTSD from her parents. His hands run through her long hair, coming up to rest behind her nack and cradle her face. Giving her a soft kiss, both their hearts skip the same beat. Suddenly, the door to Wednesday’s childhood room breaks open. Uncle Fester and Pugsley run in, babbling excitedly as their heavy footsteps reverberate through the wood of the coffin. Tyler jumps. Wednesday hides a grin.  “Do you mind? Pugsley, if you forget your manners again when coming in here I will not hesitate to reteach you.” The little boy grinned at the thought. He’d missed their waterboarding sessions while she was away. “Excuse the intrusion, stormcloud!” Fester booms, “It’s snowing and the little blister wanted you and Tyler to play.” Play? Who does Pugsley think his sister is, defective? Before a word can come from her lips to send the two on their way, Tyler pipes up with a look Wednesday had not yet seen in his eyes. “It’s snowing?” He questions Pugsley, all but vibrating with excitement. Tyler jumps to his feet from the coffin, leaving Wednesday feeling suddenly cold, and runs to the windows. Her brother and her boyfriend rip either windows’ curtains apart, pulling a hiss from Wednesday at the sudden light in the room. So many distractions at the Addams’ house, she noted. The three boys are jumping in excitement, and Wednesday’s heart does melt. Only a small bit. Her uncle and brother run to find Gomez and Morticia, leaving the two in the room alone once more. “I never knew you liked the snow so much,” Wednesday questioned. “It makes sense.” He truly was a little golden retriever, it should have made her stomach churn. Standing up and slinking her way to his standing dorm, she watches his stance reduce to fit hers. His cheeks reddened in a way she adored, so sweetly. “Our family used to be really big on Christmas.” She didn’t need to know how deep the scar ran. “I missed it, is all.” Understatement of the year, and she can see it. Of course she can, she can feel it. Every-time he lies or tells a half-truth, she gets it out of him in record time. Wednesday chose not to pry for once, instead wrapping her arms around his waist and watching him fully sink into her form. Feeling his warmth once again.  “It just so happens that your new family is just as big on Christmas,” Tylers eyes lit up, “So you make me a coffee, we’ll get ready, and I’ll run you through the rules of the Addams Graveyard Snow Fight.” She instructed. He litters small pecks all over her face and she tries desperately not to let the skin flush. Her efforts are in vain.  “Yes Wednesday.” He smiles, eyes flashing a second of golden yellow at the command. And for a second, just a small one, Tyler feels at home again. In this strange house that creaks like its breathing, with his girlfriend who has slowly let the ice of her exterior melt for him. It’s not what he was used to, but god was it needed.

“Good boy.” The nickname awakes death moths in his stomach, clawing their way through the skin. Tyler smirks, simply scooping the smaller being into his arms and running through the house. Wednesday protests, hitting his chest and demanding to be let down, but he just laughs. Carrying her bridal style through the family home’s twisting halls, past her parents room. The elder couple do not say a word, sharing a look they know all too well. Their little storm cloud has found her thunder.

i did not watch this season because it was post-the Very Bad Thing involving quentin coldwater, but they in fact DID NOTHING with the candy (kitchen) witch. NOTHING HAPPENED. she had quentin's blood. no nothing. the end. fuck you. *bitterness intensifies* maybe that was their little joke. i've let go a lot of my feelings about sera and how she was involved with the magicians fuck up, it sure seems like a lot of it is on the other showrunner john mcnamara (and honestly realizing how young she was when she started writing on spn had something to do with it, hell she's younger than i am), but she was involved and things like this get my back up all over again. deep breaths.

okay karin konoval has also been in 3 episodes of the xfiles - two iconic ones and one.. i don't remember at all.

doesn't dean already carry enough guilt, did they really need to put 10 years of enjoying torturing souls on top of it. edgelord shit.

sometimes media crosses this line with me where i feel like it's emotional manipulation and i get pissy. like if a show is engineered to make you cry a minimum once an episode (looking at you this is us), it really puts me off and i'll lose interest. in this case, i'm heavily invested in the characters, but the angst despair anxiety etc.. at some point, i get mad about it. walking a fine line right now.
