My best advice for those who want to pick up a new hobby but feel intimidated by perceived elitism is to just do what works and is available to you
I'm a musician, yet I purchased instruments online that were around $100 (very cheap considering the instruments). It's okay to do things like that! You don't have to be a Beethoven who only uses the most sophisticated instruments that cost over ten thousand dollars. And it's okay to pick up an instrument just so you can learn meme songs! You are learning something new and are applying it in ways that are enjoyable! You don't have to be ~classically trained~ or whatever.
I use music as an example because I have seen so many people who are almost ashamed that they want to dip their toes in and buy a cheap instrument, or are ashamed that they don't want to play the stuffy music that is thrusted onto musicians. However, this applies to literally anything.
Learn to write so you can write fanfic (yes, even lemons), learn to draw so you can make cringy comics, learn to compose so you can make vaporwave music. Buy cheap things that you can get your hands on, it doesn't matter when you are creating and learning!
If you are interested in a hobby, it is okay not to dive head-first into it. It's okay to be into it for a very specific purpose! You'll find that often, the elitism is either very fringe or is a stereotype, and the people in the hobby or passion will love what you're doing!

I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned my super long sea shanty playlist (almost 16 hours!)
If your favorite sea shanty or shanty band isn’t on here, please recommend it to me!

Musical Saw
I wanted to write a fanfic for Chants of Sennaar. I only used he/him pronouns but let's say that their languages have no gendered pronouns.
The five representatives of the Temple's peoples were gathered in one of the anchorites' rooms, in the devotees' lands. A bard, the Director of the theater, had called a meeting. The Director stood in front of the screen, which currently showed a saw and some sort of curved stick with a taut string.
The Priest, no, the new Preacher was hoping that he was not expected to know what the curved stick was. The Director was utterly silent as the other representatives gathered. He seemed tense. When he began to speak, it was with utmost seriousness.
It immediately turned out that the Preacher's worry was for nothing, as the Director began explaining what a saw and the stick - a bow - were for. In detail.
The Preacher decided to forgive the Director the long-winded explanation when it looked like the anchorite genuinely did not know what a saw was for. The peoples of the higher levels, it seemed, were a strange bunch. He was not sure if the alchemists' Professor was also ignorant or just enjoyed listening to the lecture. The explanation of the 'bow' was a little more interesting. Bows were an old weapon for launching projectiles, like a slingshot but for longer distances. The warriors did not prefer projectile weapons, but some kept up the practice as a hobby and to brag about their skill.
"Years, Traveler has?" asked the Director to the anchorite- the Traveler's Creator. The Preacher blinked at the change of topic. The Creator anchorite also seemed to take a second to adjust. Then he spoke.
"Zero years. Five months."
"What?!" the warrior's Commander exclaimed. "He is a baby?!" Or spoke. In the Preacher's experience, the Commander was not a quiet man. In this case the Preacher forgave the volume, because what?
The Creator anchorite seemed perplexed at the reaction.
"The Traveler is not a baby. I created him for the mission of uniting the Temple and reviving my people, and all the skill he needed for that he had from his first waking moment." The Creator anchorite paused for a moment. "He did not have knowledge, since every attempted creation I simply gave knowledge to did not work, but I gave him curiosity, and he got all the knowledge he needed in days. He is not a baby."
"Baby, he is not. Child, he is," said the Director. "Playing, he likes." The image on the screen changed, showing the Traveler holding a saw and bow.
Ah. So it was about the Traveler the whole time.
"Days ago, an old saw, he found. Toys, he made. With his devotee friend, he played. Then, funny sounds, the saw made, when it, his friend shook." (Then his friend found that the saw made funny sounds when he shook it. I wanted to keep the grammar as close to bard language as possible. Sorry if it's hard to read.) "When hit while oddly bent, even more interesting sounds, the saw made. A bow to hit with, they found. Like this, the saw sounds now."
What proceeded to play from the sound-boxes was the most haunting noise the Preacher ever heard. It sounded almost like a wordless voice. It sounded like mourning. It was beautiful... except for the odd screeching sounds in some parts.
The Director faced the Creator with utmost seriousness.
"Your child, you will stop. Please."

Recently went to see Hadestown.(btw the current West End cast is amazing) The ending was probably the most nuanced and haunting one I’ve seen. It’s such a great portrayal as to why people kept telling these tales for millennia.
It’s a sad song. It’s a tragedy. But we sing it anyway. Cause here’s the thing. To know how it ends, And still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time.
It made me think of Merlin. Why after so many years people still can’t get over it. Because you see the golden age that could have been despite how it ended. And because every time you go back, you still believe things will turn out differently. Maybe Orpheus won’t turn back this time. Maybe Merlin will get to Arthur in time.

sorry to be a hater in the first degree but fake country music fans are so fucking annoying. you’ll trip over yourselves disavowing most country music, saying you only like the “good” stuff, and then get all excited when your milquetoast pop fave says they’re recording a “””country””” album. give me a break. maybe listen to “all the cool girls” by hailey whitters to put some shit in perspective.

Oh boy I’m listening to this soundtrack on YouTube (it’s from the scene where Lloyd connects with the source dragon for the first time) and!!! You can hear the dragon theme that gets established in season nine from the very start but later on they also layer in the dragon theme that they use in the pilots and season one and!!! this is literally making me emotional it’s so cool that they have so much music to work with from all the years and inserting a callback to the very start of it all is just. someone get me a chew toy to destroy please

This man is speaking so much truth. He has articulated this much better than I ever could. I ask the same question on the daily: where are all the rock bands? The direction of music these days is GRIM. It really does seem like there's only three mainstream boxes to tick: rap, pop girls and country. I miss my little white garage boy bands. Julian Casablancas, your initials are not JC for nothing. Resurrect the genre please. Amen.

I'm looking forward to packing up to move so much!! and then opening it all again there where I end up and setting up my home 😊 I'm not someone who likes unpacking after a trip, but when it's your whole home going somewhere new and exciting, I feel like it's different. I'm saying goodbye to so many things I don't need anymore, or never needed, and for the first time in my life getting to choose exactly what's going to be in my space, with an actual budget for things I need or even just want, and nobody else to impede me bring in their own stuff. ahhh it took so many years to get to this point but I can't wait!!!
