My best advice for those who want to pick up a new hobby but feel intimidated by perceived elitism is to just do what works and is available to you
I'm a musician, yet I purchased instruments online that were around $100 (very cheap considering the instruments). It's okay to do things like that! You don't have to be a Beethoven who only uses the most sophisticated instruments that cost over ten thousand dollars. And it's okay to pick up an instrument just so you can learn meme songs! You are learning something new and are applying it in ways that are enjoyable! You don't have to be ~classically trained~ or whatever.
I use music as an example because I have seen so many people who are almost ashamed that they want to dip their toes in and buy a cheap instrument, or are ashamed that they don't want to play the stuffy music that is thrusted onto musicians. However, this applies to literally anything.
Learn to write so you can write fanfic (yes, even lemons), learn to draw so you can make cringy comics, learn to compose so you can make vaporwave music. Buy cheap things that you can get your hands on, it doesn't matter when you are creating and learning!
If you are interested in a hobby, it is okay not to dive head-first into it. It's okay to be into it for a very specific purpose! You'll find that often, the elitism is either very fringe or is a stereotype, and the people in the hobby or passion will love what you're doing!

Ask Meme
Tagged by @arebone! Maya’s a really cool gal who’s an amazing artist with some really rad aesthetics, amazing fandoms, and is a super great friend and fellow D&D player of mine!
I. How old?: I’m 18, turning 19 in February!
II. Current job?: I’m currently unemployed.
III. Dream job?: Probably either being a writer for either a comic, book, or something else, working in the music field, or being a photographer!
IV. What are you talented at?: Writing, amateur photography (1 yr so far), I can play 2 instruments (Tenor Sax and Bass Clarinet), and I’ve practiced bowling for about all my life!
V. What is a big goal you are working towards/have achieved already?: I recently had jaw surgery to fix a problem I had for a while: shortness of breath and trouble breathing when I sleep. My next goal is to get a job!
VI. What’s your aesthetic?: A few aesthetics I can name offhand that I just really enjoy is the old fashioned appeal of things, an amalgamation of older art with modern aspects, art that shouldn’t be in locations where they are (i.e. graffiti, really good and beautiful photoshop, body horror art, ect.), abstract art, space themes, nature, and poetic themes of love, loss, empowering people who need it, and much more. I have an aesthetic tumblr at ghostlybirds as a visual to what I’m talking about!
VII. Do you collect anything?: I collect vinyls! I really want to start collecting colorful rocks and possibly decor for D&D purposes, but I need an income first. ó v ò
VIII. What’s a topic you bring up in coversations?: Usually it depends on the person? If it’s someone I trust/know pretty well, I talk a lot about nerdy shit like video games, D&D, fandom stuffs. If not, I like talking about pets or music (since I listen to a butt ton of genres), or even just what’s going on in the surrounding area.
IX. What’s a pet peeve of yours?: Putting people down or discrimination, oh boy. I live with way too many people that do this and I don’t like hanging out with people who do the same.
X. Good advice to give?: Be nice, and if you decide to argue over something, do your research. It’ll help in the long run.
XI. Recommend three songs or more: UGHH BUT THERE’S SO MANY GOOD ONES
Here’s five I’ve been jamming on recently:
Watsky - Don’t Be Nice Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here The 1975 - If I Believe You Porter Robinson - Fellow Feeling The Decemberists - Philomena
I tag @bitter-almonds-and-bubblegum, @mlmpadfoot, @telanadasprompto, @shineboi, and pretty much anyone else who wants to use this.
