You have a fic with McCoy and an alien!reader so how about one for Kirk and an alien!reader? I'm curious to see what you would do!
Tumblr media
(I LOVE ALIENS!!! AND I LOVE SOULMATE AUS!!!!! HERE IS ANOTHER SOULMATE AU FOR YOU!!!! ALSO!!! Fallian Ambassador is COMPLETELY @lpwrites creation from a story we did together!! I HOPE YOU LIKE THIS!)
You thought you were alone for the longest time. Like other chicks on Fall, you were born with the mark of your mate branded between your wings, an intimate spot that was meant to only be seen by your mate. You watched your nest siblings share their marks with each other – you shared yours, of course, you were interested to know what it was – and discover their mates early on, each of them paring off before their down feathers had completely shed, and being wed when they passed the twentieth anniversary of their hatching.
But you didn’t. You would often find yourself sketching the design described to you in the margins of your school notes when you still lived on Fall, and again when you migrated to Earth to join Starfleet as a Fallian ambassador, and took multiple xenolinguistic courses to make yourself valuable.
During one such class, you were approached by Spock for your assistance running the Kobayashi Maru simulation. When you asked him why, he explained that Nyota – Uhura, he was quick to correct – would be inside the simulation, but he wanted an outsiders perspective on the other side of the glass to evaluate the cadet running it. You accepted with a smile, and a remark that your assistance came with the need for a recommendation letter to join Captain Pike’s crew once you graduated. He also accepted.
That was the first time you saw James T. Kirk and his raspberry blue eyes.
You tried to pay attention to the readings that you were meant to be watching, keeping your wings tucked close to your body as you did. But every time he talked, you found your attention drifting up to the windows, until you were watching him beat the test like it was nothing.
The next time you saw Kirk was years later, after he had taken over the Enterprise – your dream ship – and stopped the man you knew as Khan from destroying Starfleet as you knew it. You were graduating from the Academy with degrees in both Xenoliguistics and Command, red and gold ribbons threaded through your wings to mark the occasion. Captain Kirk waited for you afterwards, dressed in the Starfleet issued dress uniform and wore a smile to match it. Your eyes were immediately drawn to the emblem on his chest – the Starfleet Command crest.
You had drawn the symbol for years and years and you never put it together that it belonged to Starfleet until then.
“I’ve been told you wanna join the crew,” he said after he called you, grinning when you approached. You felt your face warm and your feathers ruffle. Kirk nodded his head and cleared his throat. “Actually, I’ve been told that you need to join. Very adamantly by my first office, Mr. Spock.”
Your palms sweat as you remembered the Kobayashi Maru test and your requirements for helping Mr. Spock. “He remembered that?” you whispered. You cleared your throat and looked up. “I would be honored, Captain.
“Jim,” he corrected. He held out his hand. The sleeve of his uniform slid up to reveal his wrist, where a gold and red feather sat between the tendons that pressed against his skin. You stared at it as you took his hand. You’d recognize your feather anywhere.
You whispered your name as you shook his hand. “I’m honored,” you managed to say, “Thank you.”
You didn’t think it was possible, but his grin grew brighter.

star trek fics masterpost (mostly AOS):
Maybe Not Anywhere (Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Spock, M) -  AU Where everything is the same except Spock runs into Jim before the events of the movie. Mostly PWP, but the plot that exists is heavy on Spock-centric character study. Spock and Nyota deal with the fact their relationship is not exactly ideal, when Captain Pike promotes Spock to first officer, by deciding to break up for a little while and try to convince people they aren't together. Spock ticks off far too many people, and Jim just wanted to get through the Kobayashi Maru - he never meant to ruin everything like this, he didn't know. Meanwhile, Spock wonders if everything would be better off if he didn't feel anything.
Vulcan Make Outs And Awkward Admissions (Kirk/Spock, T) -  Spock gets stuck in a blizzard, Jim finds him and proceeds to mother hen like nobody's business. In the middle of all that, they share some awkward stories because Jim is desperate to keep Spock conscious until they can beam back aboard the Enterprise. (For the most part, what it says on the tin.)
Six People Spock Has Kissed (Spock centric, T) - The six people Spock has kissed - an elaboration on the kisses mentioned in Vulcan Make Outs and Awkward Admissions.
of a kind (Uhura centric, M) - A character study of Nyota and her trek through relationships, dancing around vulnerability, wondering why some people risk it when there is so much at stake. Her fears and her dreams as she explores the universe. In T'Pring, she sees herself. And maybe, the potential to want to understand more then is seen, to be understood in kind.
Can a Person Be a Home? (Kirk/Spock, T) - 'Spock is home, Jim realizes, wonders how tired he is to be thinking such things. It's not a metaphor, either, no, Jim doesn't think it is. He thinks Spock simply is the definition of home, for him. He hopes Spock always wants him.' Spock and Jim, weary from a trip down to a planet of violent mass brainwash, try to unwind and remember what it's even supposed to feel like to not be alone without compromising themselves. If that's even possible.
Fluency In Love (Amanda/Sarek, M, incomplete) -  A collection of snippets of Amanda and Sarek’s life together.
What will they find when I am ripped apart? (Kirk, Spock, E, incomplete) - I love you Spock, written on my heart. The story of how Jim Kirk realizes how in love he is (the answer is: without limit), and his messy attempts to do something about it, to try and make it a good thing for all parties involved. Or, how Jim and Spock go from friends, to friends with benefits, to that awkward grey zone that is unexpressed feelings and misunderstandings of what it all means, to lovers who have been dancing around that eventuality of the universe for far too long with far too much unnecessary fear.

i've heard whispers you're reading a lot of star trek fics atm... if you have any spirk recs, one wouldn't be against that! just sayin' ...
marie, i have only been waiting for someone to ask!
i also want to start off with saying the fics i’m recommending are all based in the stxi/alternate original series, meaning the reboot films where chris pine (best chris!) plays james t kirk and zachary quinto plays spock. some of the fic might be read as either universe, but all in all the recent films have always been the way i roll.
Tumblr media
ABSOLUTE EPIC:
Observations, by anon-j-anon
this epic, 400k, fic is hosted on livejournal but with easy click through links for every chapter. basically it takes the first reboot film and then spins it into the original series universe. some of the chapters and parts are based on episodes, some are the author’s original takes and shapes. the spock voice here is outstanding, the kirk characterisation is a masterful one of pine-meets-shatner. i’ve read this fic twice but i think the last time was in 2013. it’s a big undertaking, and some parts are really fucking difficult to read. but all in all it’s  a masterpiece. everyone, no matter fandom, should read it at least once.
EPICS:
The Lotus Eaters, by aldora89
THE WORLD BUILDING! what starts off as a regular retrieve-mission turns in to captain kirk and spock stuck on an unknown planet. what looks to be normal and unthreatening takes a different turn as the night creeps in… this will have you wanting more and more and more. with the mystery of the planet and its inhabitants, the growing relationship between the stranded crew members, and also the unexpected help. 93,5k.
Don’t Stop Believing by kianspo
I WAITED SIX YEARS FOR THIS FIC TO BE FINISHED, and fuck if it didn’t pay off. as will become clear from this list i have a thing for very competent genius jim and spock’s fascination with him - this has that in spades. also a very good spock voice, needed as it is his character that we follow. from being a cadet at starfleet, to becoming kirk’s first officer and the enterprise’s five year mission. 200k and a little extra, plus checkout the series tag!
Atlas by distractedKat
when i read this the first time around it was hosted on ff.net, lucky for us the author has put it on ao3! takes place after the narada incident, spock is encouraged by starfleet admirals to get to know kirk and report back, does he deserve the captaincy? and well, that’s only the beginning. 135,5k divided into parts, lots of action.
Leave No Soul Behind by whochick
an au of the first reboot film and a really good one at that. we follow some of the EPAS - emergency personnel ambulance service. and once again, the world building here is exceptional. the narada keeps showing up and getting away, and all the characters we know turn up and play their part, but in unexpected ways. what’s always true is, spock is frustrated and fascinated, and so is kirk. 259k.
FUN EPIC:
Spoctoria - strive seek find yield, by waldorp, screamlet
you’ll like this one marie! in parts based on the film the young victoria (where emily blunt plays the young regent). spock is the heir to the federation throne and as such he needs to married, and to someone fitting at that. james t kirk is the prince of america, because his brother abdicated, and he is not… fitting. another one where the writer manages to marry the reboot films with great world building, as well as turn side-characters into exceptional loveable, and humours, roles.  68k, extras in the series tag.
Bang a Gong, waketosleep
i haven’t reread this recently, but i know that i’ve read it more than once. i remember it as both hilarious and hot. quite the combo. (pon farr ;) ~23k
SEMI-EPIC (BUT STILL EPIC)
Magpie, by waldorph
growing-up-together au of the reboot films. jim’s life is sad and writers in the stxi fandom love to hurt him even more. in this one, at least he has spock. ~58k
Entering Orbit, by museaway
takes place after the narada incident. jim goes back to iowa to get away from the media, a… misunderstanding has spock following. sharing a house in the middle of nowhere, after the destruction of vulcan, leads to the two getting to know each other. 31k
Something Smart to Do, by kianspo
5+1 - kirk and spock keeps ending up married on missions. five times they didn’t mean to and one time… 21k
Helloooo, Nurse! by lalazee
Jim is a nurse with expert knowledge of vulcan biology, 9k
Slightly newer, post st:beyond
Bluebird, by waldorph
BAD. ASS. WINONA. KIRK. another fave trope of mine, sadly not used by many more than waldorph and their friends. winona as a starfeelt engineer, she left her son on earth because other than george her true love was space and her work… jim understands. mostly. that’s not this fic. just partly. but really good. 7k
And Then I Let It Go, by kianspo
the crew gets some time off after the events of star trek: beyond. kirk goes to do something he always meant to. spock tracks him. 10,6k
asymptote, orphaned
i only have vague memories of this one, but i remember liking it, so i will get back to it. (i’m pretty sure it was written by an author with “anna” in their name and they wrote both larry and e/R as well) summery @ ao3: Spock only deserves so much, and Jim is everything. 4,8k
I COULD GO ON EVEN MORE. all-in-all: everything kianspo has written for the fandom is worth checking out. so are things by waldorph, waketosleep, spicyshimmy. lots of others. if you filter ao3 by kudos you’ll find lots of works by littleb*rdtold - i liked these when written but find that they don’t hold up ten years later. anyone is free to check for themselves of course.
for anyone having read all of these, feel free to come back for more! or if you’d like to rec me something, i’m all ears!

star trek into darkness
okay so I’m watching st:id again after all my AMAZINGG back and forth on AUs with @starlightandsunshine centering on the emotional aftermath of this movie, and I now have several (many) meta thoughts
Soo I’m thinking about how
Jim actually opens up emotionally to uhura after blowing everyone else off, also lets her wave him off in the middle of the mission to fight with her boyfriend, and then takes her side in the argument. THEY ARE FRIENDS AND LIKE EACH OTHER, I will not be accepting any other canon, ever.
He makes chekov (19 y/old????? fucking hell) chief of engineering after soctty leaves; is it because keenser was next in line and quit too? or is it because kirk roots his command in personal decisions and trusts chekov more than anyone else to do what he needs? he only bonds with marcus when marcus mentions how he was (ostensibly) the one to talk pike into joining starfleet.  Poor Chekov, he literally did not deserve this stress.
I’ll bet you anything that Jim when Pike took the enterprise from him, even as Jim was angry, he never once, not for a second, regretted what he did.  He’d lose the enterprise a thousand times over to save spock’s life.  to save any of their lives. (ignore me and you will get everyone on this ship killed, Khan says, and Jim turns right back around, pissed as hell, because Khan has observed him for five minutes and had him clocked COLD. he knows that’s Jim’s one huge button)
Deeply enjoyed how Spock got back at Jim for his teasing about Carol, the new science officer, by not telling jim shit about her deception “until it became relevant.” don’t ever tell me spock’s a robot because he enjoys antagonizing jim just as much as jim enjoys antagonizing him
the enterprise deserves someone in that chair that knows what he’s doing.  that’s not me. that’s you, spock. Do you ever think about how Jim literally abdicated the captain-ship during this movie? idk if that was him 619ing, or him maybe...agreeing with what Pike told him, before he died.  That Jim wasn’t ready for command, didn’t deserve it, that he wasn’t capable of upholding the mission and protecting his crew (clearly, since he almost got them all killed, in Jim’s mind).  Jim is...literally admitting that he doesn’t think he’s worthy of being captain, and that Spock should take his job.  that’s fucked up, especially given that he goes and basically commits suicide an hour later. (they give spock a line at the end of the movie to show that spock thinks that bullshit: as a mission of this duration has never been attempted, I defer to your good judgement, captain. really, though, Spock’s face as Jim essentially makes him captain-captain is kind of devastating; like Spock had no idea Jim felt this way or harbored these insecurities)
I’d totally missed, up until this point, that Jim was the one who suggested this mission to Marcus in the first place!! Like holy shit, talk about feeling guilty. Marcus sure as hell took advantage of it, and it’s largely his fault, but Jim was the one who walked up to the head of starfleet and straight up asked for an off-books incursion into enemy territory for revenge.  You can’t tell me that Jim doesn’t take that whole burden onto his shoulders, given that he, again, pretty quickly afterwards commits suicide via warp core.
This crew all loves each other SO FUCKING MUCH.  And the also love their captain.  Jim says “hey chekov i know you’re a navigator and 19 but be my CEO” and chekov’s like “yikes, sure!”  Jim randomly comms Scotty, who just quit and is drunk, and Scotty drops everything to go break into a secure starfleet base behind Jupiter and literally save everyone.
And they spend this whole movie trying to pull Jim back together after all this shit, losing the enterprise and Pike dying.  Bones fusses over his health and flirts with Carol to exasperate him, Spock makes it clear he’s unequivocally on Jim’s side while kicking him in the ass over his dumb decision making to get his brain working again.  Uhura acknowledges his loss and commiserates with him over spock being...spock.  Chekov and Scotty go waaaaaay out of their comfort zones without question because he needs them, no questions.  Sulu is his amazing damn self and literally the entire ship would fall apart without him, and I like to think if he’d had more time he would have dragged Jim into some sparring to let it out in a way that doesn’t involve, you know, klingons.
all due respect commander, but we’re not going anywhere.  how is sulu consistently the best part of every single movie?? I love him
and this...this is what you would have done.  don’t fucking tell me Jim doesn’t know what happened in TOS, don’t you fucking dare, because Jim in this moment chose to take spock’s place. i want you to know why I couldn’t let you die. FUCK Jim knows for sure, for sure. UGH.
Okay but Scotty doesn’t even have to say anything to Spock beyond telling him to get down to engineering; he knew exactly what that meant.  Knew it meant Jim was dying or dead.  Because every single one of the bridge crew knows about Jim’s self-sacrificial tendencies; they were devastated, but not surprised, not at all, because aos!Jim learned the day he was born that the best way to show someone you love them is to die for them.  And he loves them. so much.  god, Bones’ face when they bring Jim’s body in is haunting. Uhura gripping her mouth, because there aren’t words.  Scotty crying his eyes out.  Spock...going feral pre-surak vulcan on everyone.
And then the whole bridge crew is so fucking furious that Khan, directly or indirectly, took advantage of those tendencies, that they all help Spock go fucking feral and absolutely would have helped him murder Khan if they didn’t need him to get Jim back.
This concludes my mostly angsty thoughts about ST:ID and how it relates to aos!Jim’s angst ridden ass and the bridge crew’s relationships therein. will definitely be playing into the next round of time travel au discussion for sure

                                              My Little Blue Star
Jim Kirk x Kat Sparrow (Original Female Character): Soulmate AU - Identical tattoos or birthmarks
Kat sighs staring down at the blue star on her wrist. She was almost thirty years old and hadn’t met her soulmate yet… which normally would mean she never would. Hell for all she knew they could be dead or already happily married with kids. The soulmate tattoos caused a lot of controversy. Many people used to have their kids soulmate tattoos removed when they were babies or children. That was until it was forbidden for a soulmate tattoo to be removed until a person was twenty-one years old. This was to prevent parents from forcing their children’s removed and to keep teens who thought they were in love from having it done.
Many people would fall in love and get married only to later end up in a horrible situation when they met their soulmate. They would have to choose between their spouse and the person they were destined for. Most couples who weren’t soulmates got their tattoos removed at their ten year anniversary, others when they first got married, or when their kids were born. If one soulmate removed their tattoo the others would disappear, the same would happen if someone altered their tattoo; their soulmates would change as well; whether this was by adding to the tattoo, removing part of it, or having a scar change it.
Some people had multiple tattoos, meaning either they were destined for a polyamorous relationship or they simply had multiple chances at finding a soulmate, or one of their soulmates was destined to die… something no one ever wanted to think about. But Kat simply had one. Her blue star had never changed… at least not as long as she could remember. It sat right over her pulse point on her left wrist. A simple light blue star with a black border… it looked almost like a sketch, with the multiple lines making up each edge. The star was faded, like someone had tried to wash it away… Pictures of her when she was born show the star being much more vibrant.
“Kat, are you coming to dinner?” Kat looks up as her best friend pulls her from her thoughts.
“Yeah, I’m coming, Nyota.” She closes down her station following her friend to the mess hall. Kat was head of computer sciences aboard the USS Enterprise. She had worked on the ship since the Nero incident a little over five years before. Nyota had already found her soulmate in her boyfriend Spock. At first the only friend Kat had on the Enterprise was Nyota. Then she’d introduced her to the rest of the head crew. Kat had instantly clicked with Hikaru and Pavel, the two instantly earning themselves a place as her best friends. Hikaru had also found his soulmate in his husband Ben. The two had a daughter now.
“Hey, Kat” She smiles as Pavel waves her and Nyota over to them. Nyota sits down next to Spock, who is talking with Bones, another of Kat’s best friends. The doctor was yelling at him as usual while Spock simply raised an eyebrow in concern? At least that’s what she thought that face meant; the half-vulcan was very hard to read at times. Hikaru and Pavel seemed to be in the middle of some type of challenge, they each had houses built of forks in front of them and were adding more. Scotty and Keenzer were cheering them on. Jim, the captain of the ship was watching all this in amusement. That was their little family.
“What exactly are you doing?” Kat asks as she sets her tray down.
“I bet Pasha here that I could build a taller tower then him.” Hikaru says smirking. Kat shakes her head sitting down and eating her food. She pulls her blue sleeve back from her wrist to look at her tattoo again, letting her mind wander as she eats, absentmindedly listening to her friends argue and talk excitedly.
“Are you worrying about that again?” She looks up as Bones addresses her. Kat quickly covers her tattoo with her sleeve. She wasn’t one to display her soulmate tattoo; many people didn’t, wearing black bands on their wrists to cover it. Normally Kat wore one as well, but hers had broken that morning. This made it a lot harder to find your soulmate, but kept you from finding them while in the middle of situation that was inappropriate, such as at work, or during a negotiation of some sort. The only other person in their friend group who had ever worn one was Jim. But Kat had noticed he’d stopped wearing his when it became legal for Captains to date their crew; so long as they disclosed the relationship to the admiralty, their first officer, and their head of medical.
“Worrying about what?” Kat asks playing dumb, as she pushes her glasses up her face, a nervous habit she’d picked up as a kid. She was allergic to the medicine that fixed eyesight and so was one of the few people in the federation who needed them, something she had once been very subconscious about.
“Your soulmate, you normally move your band to look at it or fiddle with the band when you’re thinking about it.” Nyota says. Kat scowls.
“You people are too damn observant.”
“You shouldn’t vorry; you’ll find zhem when iz’s time.” Pavel says placing another fork on his tower.
“Not everyone does, Pavel. With my luck they’re either dead or already married.” Kat shakes her head.
“Well you’ll never find them if you keep the tattoo covered like you do? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it?” Bones points out.
“I thought you didn’t believe in the soulmate tattoos?” Kat counters crossing her arms. Bones had been married when his wife had found her soulmate and divorced him. He’d been very cynical about it since. It didn’t help his soulmate had removed their tattoo when he was around sixteen.
“I believe in them, just don’t like em.” Bones counters.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen it either?” Hikaru points out.
“I normally wear my band; it broke this morning though…” Kat shrugs.
“But why hide it if you want to find yours, Lass?” Scotty asks. Kat looks away.
“We weren’t allowed to show them in the orphanage or during the war…” She explains. “If we did we’d be beaten, arrested, or killed… It’s become a habit I guess…” Kat had grown up on the none federation planet of Arulan in an orphanage. A war had raged on the planet for most of her life. She had left the planet at nineteen to join the federation and a year later once she was a citizen of earth, to join Starfleet.
“Oh…” The table falls silent. Kat stands up.
           “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
                                            ---Line Break---
A week had passed since the day in the mess hall. Nyota had been pushing her to show her tattoo off ever since. She wasn’t being overly pushy about it, more reassuring than anything. Kat hadn’t bothered getting a new band. She figured her sleeve would be enough for most situations and figured Nyota and the others were right, if she wanted any chance of finding her soulmate she had to show it. They were on Shore leave on Yorktown that day as the ship needed repairs from a fight with a few Klingon war birds earlier that month.
“Okay, so the purpose of this trip is to show your tattoo to as many people as possible.” Nyota says as she drags Kat into a club where they would be meeting the rest of the head crew for drinks.
“I know; you’ve gone over this ten times, Ny.” Kat shakes her head rolling her eyes. She was wearing a blue sundress, her tattoo completely uncovered for anyone to see for the first time in her life. Her long wavy brown hair was pulled back in a braid, courtesy of Nyota’s hair styling skills. Nyota drags her over to the others. Hikaru was dancing with Ben not far from the table, Pavel flirting with a girl nearby. Spock, Bones, and Jim sit sipping drinks. Scotty was playing pool with some guys from engineering.
“Hello, Nyota, Kat.” Spock greets them as the two slide into the booth. Nyota next to Spock, Kat across from her beside Jim.
“So I see you’re not wearing a bracelet. Decided to show off your tattoo?” Bones asks clearly a bit drunk already.
“Yes, she has. Our goal tonight is to show it to as many people as possible, see if anyone recognizes it as their own or someone they knows.” Nyota says.
“Well then, let’s see it.” Bones says leaning around Jim to see. Kat laughs shaking her head.
“You’re nosy when your drunk, Bones.” She holds out her wrist hesitantly. Before Bones can get a good look, a waitress comes over to them asking for their drink order, Kat turns back ordering herself a scotch. Bones now distracted by his drink doesn’t ask again and the group falls into their usual conversations. After a while Nyota drags Spock onto the dance floor, Bones heading to the bar to get another drink.
“So, your actively looking for your soulmate now?” Jim asks sipping his own scotch.
           “More or less… Nyota’s idea…” She shrugs.
“You don’t seem too happy about it?”
“It’s not that… I’m just not very comfortable showing it… I feel like I’m going to be arrested or attacked for it any minute… I know I won’t be but…” She looks down at her wrist running a finger over her star.
“But fear isn’t logical.” Jim finishes. “I had to keep mine covered before… I didn’t want to find my soulmate on the ship, knowing I couldn’t be with them…” He says pulling the sleeve on his right arm up.
“Makes sense” Kat nods. She runs her finger over her star once more before turning to look at him fully.
“Have you ever imagined what your soulmate will be like?” Jim asks.
“Yeah… I hope their nice, a good person ya know? But I don’t know what to think… my tattoo is still here but it’s faded… I would have thought it was supposed to be, but pictures of me as a baby show it being a lot more vibrant… I can’t help but wonder if my soulmate attempted to remove the tattoo and failed…” She explains a worried look clear on her face.
“It could have been an accident or their parents? My mom tried to remove mine with a home remedy when I was a toddler, I only know because my older brother told me… She didn’t want me having one after my father died… something about not wanting me to go through that pain… she tried the same on my brothers… it didn’t work. Now mine’s all faded.”
“That’s horrible…” Kat shakes her head.
“Yeah… But I still like mine… my little star.” He smiles looking down at his wrist, Kat tries to make out his tattoo but is just at the wrong angle to see it.
“A star?” She asks, glancing down at her own little blue star.
“Yeah, it fits, with me loving the stars as much as I do… I hope she likes them as much as I do…”
           “She?”
“Yeah, I mean, I’d be fine if it were a he or whatever they are… but I feel like they’re a she…”
“What else do you feel they’re like?” Kat asks with a small smile.
“Their favorite color is blue, and they love the stars and the ocean… They’re a cat person, but like dogs too.” He says with a thoughtful look. “They are a huge nerd.”
“All that from one little tattoo?” She laughs.
“Well, yes and no… I’ve daydreamed about them, whoever they are my entire life… got me through some of my worst moments.” He downs his drink.
“I guess that makes sense… I was too busy trying to survive to get a chance to dream of stuff like that… I love my little blue star though… It fits me perfectly.” Kat says laying her left wrist on the table to show him her tattoo. Jim leans over to look at it, his eyes slowly widening.
“Holy crap.” He mutters as he slowly looks up at her. Kat raises an eyebrow.
“What?” Jim lays his right wrist beside hers. Right on his pulse point is a little blue sketch like star… her little blue star. Kat stares openly at the tattoos for a minute before she slowly looks up at him.
“You’re my soulmate?” Jim asks, looking completely shocked. “All these years… we were right there… and we never knew?”
Kat stares at him, her heart racing in her ears. She slowly and almost fearfully brings her right hand to trace the star on his wrist. As soon as she touches it a small shock shoots through her, not a bad shock like static electricity but an amazing one. The shock is like a bucket of cold water being poured over your head on a warm day, the satisfaction when you put the final piece of a puzzle together, like the first bite of your favorite desert, or hearing the chorus to your absolute favorite song. It’s like the first snow of winter, or first bud of spring. Absolute belonging, like the world finally making sense. Something Kat had never known. Like for the first time in her life, she was truly home.
Kat looks up at him her brown eyes wide, made even wider by her glasses, locking with his bright shocked blue. Blue… just like her… no their little blue stars.
“Oh my god…” She mutters out, she covers her mouth with her right hand her eyes flickering from his eyes back to their wrists then back to his eyes again.
“Is… is that a good ‘oh my god’… or a bad one?” He asks slowly, looking at her nervously now. Kat blinks at him not getting his meaning for a moment. She moves her hand pushing her glasses up her nose.
“A shocked one… I… oh wow… I never thought… that my soulmate could be… someone like you.” Kat says her eyes locking with his again.
“I know… you probably expected someone better… Someone who deserves someone as amazing as you…” Jim says looking away, clearly misunderstanding her. “We don’t have to be together… I understand if you don’t want to be.” Jim says his voice breaking.
“What? NO!” Kat shakes her head quickly, grabbing his right hand in her left frantically. “That is not what I meant!” Jim looks down at their hand then up at her confused.
           “Then what did you mean?”
“I meant I never expected my soulmate could be someone as absolutely amazing and wonderful as you!” Kat says looking up at him desperately, worry clear on her face.
“You… you think I’m wonderful?” Jim asks, a large grin slowly stretching across his face, happiness, wonder, and love replacing the hurt and pain. Kat nods slowly, her face turning red.
“Well… yeah.” She looks down at their hands. Jim uses his free hand to lift her chin softly so their eyes a locked again.
“I think you’re an amazing, wonderful, beautiful, strong, and sometimes a bit scary, woman. I couldn’t have been given a better soulmate.” He says sincerely. Kat stares at him tears starting to form in her eyes.
“You… really think that?” Jim nods a large grin splitting his face tears sparkling in his own eyes.
“That and so much more… I’ve liked you for a long time… hell much more than liked, but I didn’t want to make a move knowing you still had your tattoo meaning you were probably waiting for your soulmate…”
“I was doing the same thing… we really are idiots.” Kat laughs a large grin splitting her face as a few tears leave a trail down it. Jim brushes the tears away.
“May I… kiss you?” He asks after a moment. Kat nods her smile turning nervous again. Jim slowly leans in, kissing her softly. Kat kisses him back, her heart leaping with joy. After twenty-nine years, she was finally home. ---Line Break--- This is a repost of a story from 2016 originally posted on my main account that I have cleaned up and updated. I really like the little AU and figured it was time to clean it up a bit and move it here, I hope you all enjoy!

Fire on the mountain (or the georgia mcspirk au)
maybe idk I’ve never Named a Fic before any suggestions on titles?
Chapter one
“And why couldn’t we have done this in my office?”
“Because last week you said you’d sing Before He Cheats with me when’s its time for karaoke- Bones? Hello?” Jim waved a hand in front of his friends face. “What’re you looking at?”
McCoy had heard what sounded suspiciously like an “evil hiss” from the direction of the small band gathering in the open area of the rec room. He looked at Jim, rolled his eyes, and went back to his padd.
“Oh no, no no no, you don’t get to act all smooth, that’s the song.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking ‘bout, Jim.”
A loud squeal came from one of the violins, and McCoy winced. “That’s the wrong note damnit; why don’t they get someone competent-“
“I knew it! It’s that song! The Devil Went Down To Georgia!”
“The Devil Went Down To Georgia, Captain?” Spock sat down beside McCoy, who desperately wanted nothing more than to slink back to his quarters and open that bottle of vodka he didn’t take from the kid’s locker.
“Yeah, Bones can play it on his violin. He’s a real natural at it.”
“First of all, its a fiddle, not a violin. And I ain’t a natural at it, I’ve been playing since before you were born you conniving infant-“
“Doctor, I was not aware that you played,” Spock smoothly interjected.
“I don’t,” McCoy grumbled into his padd. And he wouldn’t have played at all that night if Christine hadn’t come up behind him with Jim saying “why thank you nurse chapel! and you said you found it in medbay? just lying around? well it’s a good thing we have someone here who can play!” Jim looked like the cat who got the cream, and if he wasn’t mistaken, that eyebrow twitch meant Spock was pretty damn amused.
“How in the name of Sam Hill did you do that?”
“I don’t know what you’re talkin’ ‘bout, Boooones,” Jim drawled, smile askew.
“That’s just offensive,” McCoy growled. They heard another halfhearted attempt at the chorus, and McCoy stood up. “Alright. Don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone. And I better not find a recording of this.” With that he stormed off towards the band, fiddle in tow.
Jim turned to Spock. “You didn’t know he played?”
Spock raised an eyebrow. “Doctor McCoy and I do not often get the chance to talk about our pastimes.” Aggressive southern protesting was heard from the bands direction as to prove Spock’s unspoken point.
Jim grimaced. “Yeah, I didn’t really think about that...” The band played a harmonious note, and a hush fell over the room. McCoy walked up to one of the main microphones and tapped it.
Jim wolf whistled.
Leonard sent a glare.
And Spock contained a sigh.
Then the music started to play.
————
“The Devil went down to Georgia. He was lookin' for a soul to steal. He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind, he was willing to make a deal.“ Spock was in control of his emotions. He was in control of his emotions. The Doctor’s voice was smooth and perfect for the melody, and Spock was in control of his emotions.
“Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the Devil his due. I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul 'cause I think I'm better than you." Jim looked back and forth between his Bones and his first officer. Spock looked relaxed for once, and Bones was getting into the persona.
“And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold! But if you lose the devil gets your soul...”
For the rest of the song there was lots of laughter, clapping, and to Spock’s surprise, dancing. There was an old earth “line dance” that Jim and a couple of other crew members knew. The captain even drug Uhura and Nurse Chapel into the dance, it looked extremely simple to learn. And yet, when Jim had asked Spock to dance, he’d said no.
Watching him dance was much more fun.
“Spock! Spock, look!” Jim gestured toward where McCoy was telling the end of the story. Spock, ever the obedient first officer, looked up to the doctor.
Where he found McCoy already looking at him. “I done told you once you son of a bitch I’m the best there’s ever been,” McCoy sung, winking at the end because he felt like it. “Fire on the mountain, run boys run!”
He winked.
If Spock had a dusting of green over his ears, Jim and the good doctor were too far away to notice. He willed the blood to go down, and worked on regaining his composure for the rest of the song.
————
“Howdy Bones-“
“Oh, shut up,” McCoy grumbled with no real malice. He was smiling, and he ruffled Jim’s hair before standing in front of Spock.
“Well, did you uh... did you like it?”
Spock, caught up in the doctor’s smile, honestly couldn’t decide what to say. He decided what he thought would “stir up less trouble.”
“What is the cultural significance of the lyric ‘chicken in the bedpan picking out dough’ ?”
McCoy swore loudly and walked away.

My Fave Spirk Fics
(!) = Smut
(*) = I love this fic and have gone back to re-read multiple times
(-) = Short fic
(|) = Long Fic
Listening Skills by Aelimir (-)
K/S. Spock has concluded that the Captain doesn't listen to him. Uhura, as the communications officer, disagrees. What is the real problem? AU set before "Into Darkness." Rating changed due to reviewer suggestion. :)
Thy Soul, Alight In The Dark by Aerlalaith (|)
When disgraced former Starfleet captain and current salvage runner James T. Kirk stumbles upon what appears to be an abandoned Vulcan research vessel on the edge of Federation Space, he thinks he’s finally found some luck. The state of the ship and the fate of her original crew however, turn what was supposed to have been a standard day’s work into something quite a bit stranger. As Kirk and his crew debate if they can—or should—wake a sleeping survivor, it soon becomes clear that the nightmare is just beginning.
In Another World by ashayamspirk (!)
Starfleet believed Jim Kirk was destined for command. Jim Kirk would prefer to leave his father's long Starfleet reputation behind him and dedicate himself to xeno-botany. Offered a position to work on hybrid plants on Vulcan, Jim is put into contact with a tutor, the blind xenolinguistics professor, Spock. It's only after meeting him that Jim realizes how he and Spock are connected, and why the Vulcan hates him so much. But then fate has other ideas, and long after Jim leaves earth for Vulcan, they're thrown into each other's paths once again.
Designated by ashayamspirk (!)
“I would like you to read over the contract and consider what you are agreeing to before you sign,” Spock says, and reaches for the PADD on the table. And because Jim is an absolute dipshit who thinks nothing through ever at all, he just shrugs and uses his fingers to scroll to the bottom, signs, and hits send. Amok Time AU
Vulcan Keeping and Other Problems by t_3po (*)
Where's the manual for raising nerdy young Vulcans chasing after local bad boys when you actually need it?
I Will Have This by ashayamspirk (!) (series has been discontinued, consider the first story in the series a one shot)
Just as she finished adding a small box of sweets to her items, she felt a tug on the sleeve of her robe. Turning, she had a smile prepared, and a praise on the tip of her tongue for whatever item her son had chosen. That turned into a sharp gasp when she realized that carefully ensconced in her son’s arms was not any item for sale in the shop, but a very human baby. “Mother, I will have this.”
Something Smart To To by kianspo (|) (!)
In which Jim finds himself fake-married to his first officer every other month. It's not his fault. Mostly. Dowries and Klingons are involved. Starfleet is decidedly not amused.

Somewhere to Begin by jouissant (|)
Everything's fine between Jim and Spock at the end of the first five year mission, or so Jim thinks. But then Spock up and leaves San Francisco without so much as a goodbye, and Jim's suddenly faced with the prospect of life without his first officer...unless he can go to New York and win Spock back.
Of Spocks and Socks by gentleau (-) (*)
The giving of gifts is a most illogical practice, Spock doesn’t know how to be in a human relationship, and no one ever talks to Jim about anything.

Five times Kirk tried to win his soulmate over, and one time Spock succeeded without really trying.

Plucked by cembular (!)
Spock loses his virginity to his captain and boyfriend. PWP
This is Bumbles by PurpleFluffyCat (!) (-) (*)
This porny, fluffy, slightly-cracky(!) fic was written for a Star Trek kink meme. The prompt suggested subverting the usual trope of Vulcans in pon farr as aggressive and uber-dominant, and read as follows:"Spock's in pon farr. Jim finds out and offers to help him out! Instead of being aggressive in pon farr, Spock is super loving, emotional and sweet. Bonus if it takes Jim off guard!"
In Any Language by Enterprisingly (!) (-)
A love story in 10 parts. Based on a tumblr post about relationship words that do not translate to English.
Aubade by jouissant (-) (*)

Another Way Jim and Spock Could Meet as Kids by Seasnake (-)
Your heart’s sudden but inevitable betrayal by WhatIfImaMermaid (-)
Every once in while, when he’s feeling the perfect combination of nostalgic and impish, he asks Spock about that night. Most times Spock just smiles that non-smile of his into the curve of Jim's neck, and says nothing.

After a transporter incident, de-aged Spock Prime is left in the care of Jim Kirk. Nu Spock becomes illogically jealous of Spock Prime. De-aged fluff fic.
Bragging Rights by Ragdoll (Keshka) (!) (*) (|)
AU. Two and a half years into his time at Starfleet Academy, Cadet Jim Kirk meets Lieutenant-Commander Spock, and the sparks begin to fly.
Dynamic by coffee666
Jim is tired of the crew assuming he and Spock don't work well together just because they happen to disagree a lot. To prove them wrong, Jim convinces Spock they should start dating.
Playing up their romantic relationship in front of the crew for spite should be fun. The hard part is that they're both secretly crushing on each other.
Ardor by ThereBeWhalesHere (!)
AU where everything is the same, but when Vulcans find their soulmate they sense it through their pheromones. These pheromones are, well, incredibly insistent. Spock's pretty sure he's immune to them until he meets one James T. Kirk. Really this is just an excuse to write sexually-frustrated!Spock who's pretty much DTF from the get-go.
cast out fear by s0mmerspr0ssen (|) (*)
Kirk saves Vulcan from Nero at high cost to himself. It falls to Spock to pick up the pieces.
A Theoretical Novelty by FallacyFallacy (!) (|)
So, it turned out that Jim's skill at chess was the hottest thing Spock had ever experienced. He only wished he hadn't found that out in the middle of the rec room. Repeatedly. Written for Kink_Bingo for 'Humiliation (In Public)'.
Some Cupid by summerofspock (-) (!)
Tired of their childish fighting, McCoy sets out to set up Jim and Spock. Antics ensue. (i.e. that time i wrote Much Ado About Nothing using Kirk and Spock)
Devil’s Bargain by Rhaegal (RhaegalKS) (!)
Set after TMP. Spock’s impending pon farr makes him wary of agreeing to a second five-year mission, so Kirk agrees to lend a hand (so to speak) should the situation arise. What could possibly go wrong?

Santa, Baby by rabidchild67
Spock is a department store Santa. Hilarity ensues.
Reasons We Should Date: A Logical Approach by iknewaman (*) (-)
Jim really wants to get across to Spock how well they are together, but he's not sure how to go about it.
Eventually he decides fuck it, the simplest way to get Spock to understand is to walk him through it, and he does so using the wonderful medium of digital presentations.

Bang a Gong by waketosleep (|) (!) (*)
The chronicles of the Sad Bastards Club (Enterprise Chapter).
It was just the two of us by sinking_m (-)
Again, everyone knows except for Jim
Measure of Happiness by writeonclara (|)
When Spock chose Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy, he had not anticipated cohabiting with the most illogical, irrational, emotional human he ever met.
On the flip side, Jim never asked for a Vulcan chaperone, especially one as snotty as Spock, son of Sarek.
A Starfleet Academy AU in which Spock adapts to human life, Jim learns very, very quickly never to play a prank on a Vulcan, and there are far too many people after Jim Kirk's life.
No-Win Scenario by CateAdams (!)
A split-second decision changes Jim’s life forever, as a desperate bid for survival results in a bond with Spock. As Jim tries to understand their new connection, he must contend with his own inner struggles. Surprising new enemies are revealed and unexpected threats emerge, and Jim must come to terms with the true significance of their bond before it is too late.
Through Chekov's Eyes by littlebirdtold (!)
In which Mr. Spock hates Chekov and terrorizes the crew, Captain Kirk has the best poker face on the ship, Chekov never means to eavesdrop, Uhura gets some curves, Kirk gets cock-blocked, Spock gets off, McCoy pulls rank, Spock pulls Kirk's pigtails, and love sucks.
Friends With Benefits For Idiots by yaoichan12 (|) (!)
Spock loves Jim but won't tell him. Jim loves Spock but won't tell him. They get to talking about friends with benefits and end up agreeing to start that type of relationship. Both think that's all they'll ever get to have with one another, so they keep their mouth shut about their feelings and just have sex.
Chess, and other Aphrodisiacs by obsidienne (!) (*) (|)
When Jim is brought up on charges of academic dishonesty, he decides to find out who his accuser is.
As You Wish by writeonclara (|) (*)
It's probably a phenomenally bad idea to let someone named Lucifer grant you seven wishes, but, well, why the hell not? Maybe then Jim can finally have that perfect command team from the other universe he so desperately wants.
Then again, wishing that Spock would loosen up a bit shouldn't land him in pre-Reform Vulcan.
Maybe he'll get it right next time.
Sure Thing by FagurFiskur (!) (-) (*)
Based on this prompt:
Because of his reputation (which initally came from nowhere) men have always assumed Kirk is a sure thing and have never tried to seduced Kirk... just used the old wham, bam thank you ma'am (or sir in this case)and have rarely bothed about his pleasure. (...)
(...)So suddenly Kirk finds himself being courted by Spock... at first Kirk thinks it is Spock trying to mess with his mind because Spock is still pissed about the 'cheating' incident but is soon disabused of that notion and he finds himself in his first loving, committed relationship in his life.
Echolocation by Darksknight (-)
Kirk and Spock don’t realize that they’ve bonded right away. The rest of the crew is a different story.
Eavesdropping by coffee666 (-) (!) (*)
Jim knows for a fact that Spock and Uhura and talking about him when they start whispering in Vulcan. He has no idea what they're saying, until he takes it upon himself to learn the language.
___
Spock gushes about his crush on Jim, having no idea that Jim can understand him
Subtext by noodleinabarrel (*)
Texting your Vulcan first officer in the middle of the night is never a good idea. Especially when you have an obsessive crush on said Vulcan.
The holidays are approaching and Jim is left entirely Spockless aboard the Enterprise when his First takes shore leave on New Vulcan. After some midnight pining, Jim sends a text he instantly regrets. That is, until Spock responds and willingly continues their textual communications to an inevitable conclusion.
Pyromania by sinestrated (-) (!)
Jim has been burning bridges since childhood. The Enterprise and Spock eventually change that.
Limits of Interpretation, or: So You Want to Date a Vulcan by druxykexy (*)
Kirk learns that, when it comes to the cultural habits of Vulcans, it's not a good idea to trust other people's research. Spock gets to see a different side of his captain (that may or may not exist). There's a reboot of the TOS episode "Shore Leave" somewhere in the middle of all this.
Note: The McCoy/Barrows relationship is fairly background, and is included due to its presence in the episode.
Armchair Psychology bigmamag (-)
McCoy forces Kirk and Spock to write an ongoing list of things they like about each other. Kirk doesn’t know if he’ll be able to make his weekly quota. At least, not at first.
Blind Date by Aelimir (-) (*)
McCoy convinces Jim to go on a blind date. Only, things don't go as planned.
Abrams-style, except for that fact that George lived.
Perception by Aelimir (-)
Everything happened like it did in 2009, except the Narada never attacked Vulcan. After several missions, Pike retires and Jim is appointed in his place. The downside? He's required to have Spock, that bastard who tried to get him kicked out of Starfleet, as his First Officer.
Jim soon learns that perception is everything, and not all is as it seems.
So Wise We Grow by Deastar (|) (*)
"Commander Spock, we have located your son," the Vulcan lady on the screen says, which would be great, except Jim can tell by the look on Spock's face that he's never heard of this kid before in his life. "If it is expedient, the child will be sent to join you on the Enterprise within the week."
Looking to the Stars (Like They've Got All the Answers) by shards_of_divinity (!) (|)
Jim and Spock's relationship is on the edge of something deeper than friendship. When their kidnapper's ship crashes to an uncharted and uninhabited planet, Jim and Spock have to fight to stay alive, and the strength of their uncertain relationship is tested when Spock enters Pon Farr...
we have not touched the stars by prouvairing (-) (*)
Sometimes they’ll also ask him why he hasn’t gone out and chased his soulbond yet.
Jim will point to the sky, and say, “The moon’s always there, babe. Don’t need to go chasin’ after her.”
It is January, year 2063. Humanity has quietly achieved interstellar travel, and Jim Kirk’s soulbond stretches into the stars.
These things tend to get messy by WhatIfImaMermaid (!) (-)
A lot, Jim tells himself. A lot of heartbreak.
Or:
It begins because aliens make them do it, and then it becomes one of those things.

A list of some Star Trek ficrecs for @hugs-are-good-for-you - sorry this took so long!
It’s also under a cut, because length.
Bluebird by waldorph
“Jim Kirk.” Jim whipped around so fast most of his drink ended up on Spock, who was reaching for the phaser that wasn’t there. The Enterprise crew was parting like the biblical seas before Moses, and Jim could feel the temperature dropping. “Mom,” Jim croaked.
This is a post-Star Trek Beyond fic, and I love it. 7k one shot.
Atlas by distractedKat
Between what was and what will be stands James Tiberius Kirk, in all his fractured patchwork glory. Because saving the Federation was only the beginning.
This picks off from the end of the first Star Trek film, and it’s long, but damn it’s good. It’s so good, told from Spock’s perspective as he learns what Jim will really meant to him.
And Then I Let It Go by kianspo
Post-Star Trek Beyond. The crew of the Enterprise gets a breather while they are waiting for their new ship. Jim uses the time to do something he had sworn he would never do.
I went through a stage of needing post-Beyond fics, and this is another great take on the angst that Jim had at the end of it.
Observations by anon_j_anon
There’s no way to really describe this fic. It’s another huge one, and coves some sensitive subject matter at times, but damn it changed me and left me different. It’s worth a read, as long as it is.
Leave No Soul Behind by whochick
If you're Starfleet, you spend your whole life wishing you never see an EPAS uniform right up until the moment they become your only hope. Whether you're dying a slow, cold death in space, or a long painful one on some godforsaken planet, they're going to come for you. So count your last breaths, son, and hold on tight. They leave no soul behind.
This is a damn good AU where Spock and Kirk never had the chance to stop Nero at the end of the first film. It’s a what-if of stunning writing, while still being the exact characters we know. There’s also an amazing trailer to it on YouTube here.
How We Are (but not how we’re going to be) by alpha_hydra
Even when they hate each other, they're still sort of falling in love.
Beautiful fic, pulls at the feels.
Something Smart To Do by kianspo
In which Jim finds himself fake-married to his first officer every other month. It's not his fault. Mostly. Dowries and Klingons are involved. Starfleet is decidedly not amused.
This was just a lot of fun, and so much heart.
Veritas by theproblematique
Captain James T. Kirk and Lieutenant Commander Spock are hereby charged with negligence and wanton misconduct due to their emotional compromise with each other.
They are each in so much denial through this fic and it’s great.
I’m going to stop there for now, but basically anything these authors have written are also amazing and cannot recommend enough. Enjoy!

Me: I’m just going to do a really quick, shitty AU Captain Spock (green wrap edition) and First Officer Kirk sketch.

Tumblr media
Captain Spock and First Officer Kirk head canons:
A young science officer Kirk was so frustratingly good at chess that he was known to intentionally lose an occasional chess game to his brother George just so that he would at the very least have someone -- anyone -- to play with him. (It was lonely for a nerd in Iowa.)
Pubescent Captain Spock was a confirmed nightmare. There was a legitimate emo “I hate my dad” phase. In an act of defiance he once tested out a risque human gesture which involved making the hand into a fist and then raising the middle finger, resulting in the longest grounding of Spock’s childhood. Amanda was inconsolably amused. Sarek was not.
Cadet Kirk nearly fell out of his chair when Commander Spock walked into his chess club, sat down, and just silently started a game with him. He resisted the urge to geek out hard because he knew exactly too much about the commander: his innumerable accolades and accomplishments, what it meant to Starfleet to have him, the only Vulcan known to turn down a position at the Vulcan Science Academy -- the sheer intelligence, the strength of will, the raw talent it took for him to earn the reputation he had --
“Cadet Kirk. There is a notable tremor in your hand. Are you quite alright?” Jim made some strangled noise around the lump in his throat that sounded something like consent and nodded just in case his awkward attempt at communication had failed him.
Spock was walking away after personally asking Jim if he felt ready and capable of supporting him by filling both Science and First Officer positions on his newly appointed ship. It was a tall and ambitious order, but Spock made a point of informing Kirk that he felt confident in Jim’s abilities -- so much so that Kirk was his first choice without hesitation. Jim was so utterly grateful that the Vulcan had turned and walked away when he did, because Jim’s knees were weak. He was so shocked that for a moment his head swam, he felt tingles in his extremities -- Oh God don’t faint here! He stumbled sidelong against the wall and shimmied around the corner before letting himself slide down the wall, cradling his head in his hands with his knees drawn up under his chin. He was certain he was having a panic attack right now, his chest was so full of joy and other wild and flailing emotions that he thought his ribs might crack from the pressure of holding it in. He wanted to dance, scream, and cry his tired eyes out. The most promising and anticipated individual to be promoted to Captain in the fleet would command the Enterprise; people were clamoring to showcase what they had to offer in the hopes of being aboard the first and only ship with a Vulcan captain, who also happened to hold the current highest aptitude in the history of the fleet. People were giving their all just to get to set foot on that ship as a crew member. Oh God. Oh God. I’m going to be second in command. Oh God! He had never wanted anything else so badly in the entirety of his life. On shaky legs he worked his way back up to his feet, taking massive gulps of air. He fled to his dorm on legs he still did not quite trust and swore to himself he would not. Cry. Out of every single qualified candidate in Starfleet, Spock went out of his way to personally approach me -- to ask me to be his First Officer. ME!!! He threw himself into the room and slammed the door, collapsing onto his bed and no, he didn’t cry. What he did was more akin to silently sobbing.

o   No one asks Sam what he wants.
o   [Wincest, incest, non-con elements, forced bonding, angst, John is a shitty parent, minimal smut]
o   This is the angsty fucked up version of a forced bonding fic. But I’m trash, so I love it.
·       Necessity by notboldly (Star Trek, Mature, 14K, 2010)
o   When Jim is attacked by a telepathic species, Spock bonds with him to save his life.
o   [slow build, romance, minimal smut, telepathy, empathy, bonding]
o   A classic forced bonding to save your life fic. Focuses on the discomfort of the sudden intimacy and how that brings them together.
·       ♥ ♥ Then You Think Again by leah k (blinkiesays) (Teen Wolf, Mature, 22K, 2012)
o   "You had no idea that it was going to work!" Stiles throws his hands up. Why is Derek the most frustrating werewolf in the history of ever, why is Stiles even helping him, why is this his life?  "Why did they even believe you in the first place?" Derek says, "You reeked of me," which is unfair.  Stiles only smelled because he'd gotten covered in Derek's bodily fluids trying to staunch the bleeding.
o   [bond or die, hags made them do it, bonding, forced intimacy, empathy, useyourwords!Derek, humor, sarcastic!Stiles, UST, pining, werewolf instincts, scent!kink, minimal smut]
o   Another one where Stiles’ voice is on point. Funny and tense with the UST. Forced bonding for the win. Their relationship builds really nice and organically.
·       Here Comes Your Man by hannahrhen (Avengers, Teen-Explicit, 25K, 2013)
o   (Reluctant!Soulmate AU) An unexpected bond forms between Tony Stark and one of his greatest enemies. But not everything before is forgotten, or forgiven.
o   [Tony/Loki, forced intimacy, dub-con, angst, bickering, denial of feelings]
o   This relishes in the awkwardness of forced intimacy as Tony has no understanding or patience for the bond. It’s laid out as a series, but really this should have been chapters of one fic.
·       ♥ ♥ Choices by Kethrua (Dresden Files, Mature, 28K, 2011)
o   In an AU to Changes, Harry sold himself to John Marcone instead of Mab. They both take a while to adjust to this. Written for the Kinkmeme, for a prompt requesting both serious treatment of the issues and smut. Contains non-explicit reference to past child abuse and rape.
o   [bonding, dubcon, magic, power imbalance, healing, hurt comfort, smut, trust issues]
o   I love this fic so much. It has perfect pacing and character development. The love and growing trust between the characters is so obvious and yet understated.
·       A Shove Towards Love  by General_Button (Voltron, Teen, 31K, 2016)
o   A simple rescue mission turns into chaos when the species on the planet Novaria take an interest in the lives of two of its paladins.
o   [Klance, meddling aliens, aliens made them do it, but there’s no smut, bickering, pining, mind meld, forced proximity, soul bond]
o   This is great example of the trope. Keith and Lance are somehow both pining and acting like they can’t stand each other at the same time, and you just want to smack them, until you don’t.
·       ♥  Debt of Honor by Brianna Falken (Star Trek, NC-17, 33K, 2009)
o   Six months after being taken prisoner and raped by a Vulcan captain, Kirk finds that same Vulcan is now being assigned as his first officer when peace between Vulcan and Earth is declared. Originally published in the print fanzine Beyond Dreams 7 (2004)
o   [Non-con, non-reform Vulcan, super angst, rape recovery, healing, bonding, slow build]
o   This starts with a pretty graphic rape scene so please take care of yourself, but if that isn't your trigger or you can get past the non-con, this is a lovely story about forgiveness and healing. It’s actually one of my favorite star trek fics, something about the characterization both breaks my heart and gives me all the feelz. Literally the definition of a fandom classic since it came out of a fanzine.
·       Defendere by Lomonaaeren (Harry Potter, Mature, 37K, 2012)
o   When Harry stumbles into a magical ritual meant to enslave Draco, he manages to create a bond that leaves Draco with some free will. And the ability to irritate Harry in the name of "guarding" him.
o   [Drarry, forced soul bond, dub con, lots of consent issues, free will issues, slow build, pining, UST, angst, forced intimacy]
o   This one felt weird because of all the consent issues, but it does deep dive into the forced bonding and intimacy, and it’s well written. I’m just not sure I think this relationship is actually healthy, but it’s fanfic so, ehhh. The author does address the consent issues, don’t get me wrong, I just couldn’t 100% believe that they were solved.
·       Unexpected Consequences by lauren3210 (Harry Potter, Explicit, 39K, 2015)
o   Harry was going back to school. He was going to play Quidditch, sleep in lessons, hang out with his friends, and generally just enjoy being a kid for a change. And he was also going to do it while being bonded with Malfoy, because apparently life was just going to continue throwing curveballs at him. Harry didn't know why he expected anything different.
o   [Drarry, slavery sort of, consent issues, slow build, healing, enemies to friends to lovers, trust issues, magic, bullying]
o   Draco is completely in Harry’s power and must learn to trust his jailor. It’s very good. One of those classic Drarry fics IMO. It’s what Defendere could have been.
·       ♥ Present  by reillyblack (Teen Wolf, Explicit, 112K, 2018)
o   When Stiles's best friend Scott presented as a werewolf, it was just the worst. Worst by far was that it meant Scott had to leave immediately to live with the werewolf pack in the mountains -- which no one knew anything about. Stiles couldn't even visit, so he only got to see Scott once a month when he came back to visit his mom. It sucked. A year later, he presents too.
o   [world building, ABO dynamics, werewolf dynamics, scent kink, inventive werewolf world, like—super inventive, soul mates, Oblivious!Derek, plot, smut, UST, pack dynamics, pack bonding, BAMF!Stiles, Stiles doesn’t take shit from anyone]
o   As you can tell from my tags, this fic has precious and wonderful world building. I absolutely adored it. It’s everything you could want from werewolves. It’s also well plotted and fun as hell.
·       Rare Merchandise by CateAdams (Star Trek, Explicit, 120K, 2015)
o   Jim and Spock are kidnapped by Orion slavers during a diplomatic mission, transported to a location outside of Federation space and sold to a mysterious woman who commands an entire world. Once there, they are forced to participate in her terrifying agenda: their friendship used against them and their strength brutally tested. Can they survive and escape, or will they be used to bring down the Federation itself?
o   [For want of a nail, angst, action, Non-con elements, character torture, forced bonding, mind meld shenanigans.]
o   This is a very action oriented fic that will keep you reading late just make sure everyone lives through it. It has some mind rape elements though, so be careful there.
·       ♥♥  other things the road to hell is paved with by LuciaZephyr (Dresden Files, Explicit, 138K, 2011)
o   Book One of the Matter of Chicago series. Diverges from the canon plotline from Fool Moon, chapter 23, running on the idea of Marcone not holding the Idiot Ball and thus getting Harry to sign his contract. Very slow burn romance. Essentially an AU take of the entire series.
o   [slow burn, deliciously slow burn, magic, power imbalance, magical contract, Oblivious!Harry, manipulative!Marcone, trust issues, plot]
o   This is one of those perfect fics. I don’t know what else to say; look up a summary of the Dresden Files and then read this if you haven’t read the books. It’s better than the source material. The bond is more an oath of fealty/obedience than the more traditional telepathy or empathy version.
·       Human is Just a Word by lady emebalia (emebalia) (Teen Wolf, Explicit, 173K, 2017)
o   Getting claimed by a werewolf has so not been on Stiles' agenda for the night. But at least he can choose whose human pet he's going to be. That's a plus, right?
o   [fuck or die, forced bonding, so much angst, slow build, pack dynamics, werewolves are known, BAMF!Stiles, scent kink, forced intimacy]
o   This has a lot of similar qualities to Present, so if you liked that, then you’ll probably like this too. It has a different concept of the intimacy of wolves and enough drama/tension to burst a blood vessel.
·       Bond by Anna Fugazzi (Harry Potter, Mature, 204K, 2006)
o   Yet another one of those Harry and Draco Are Forced To Be Together By Something Beyond Their Control And Then Stuff Happens Leading To Twoo Wuv stories.
o   [Drarry, fandom classic, fuck or die, UST, pining, smut, they eventually fuck like rabbits, magic compulsion, bonding, mystery, angst, loss of virginity]
o   This is the OG best of the best of Drarry bonding fics. If you haven’t read it and you like either Drarry or the bonding trope, then what even are you?
·       ♥♥ The Saffron Soul by BeautifulFiction_FMA (Fullmetal Alchemist, Explicit, 267K, 2010)
o   When a serial killer blurs the lines of alchemy in an effort to seal two souls together, Ed finds himself under suspicion from the police. Can he prove he is innocent, or are he & Roy doomed to suffer the consequences of the killer's ideals?
o   [RoyEd, BAMF!Edward, BAMF!Roy, murder mystery, action, adventure, dream sharing, empathy, plot, smut, slow burn]
o   This is one of my favorite fics of all time. I’ve reread it countless times. The characterization is amazing, the plot engaging, and the writing wonderful. All of her FMA works are great but this is the masterpiece.

“Fraternization is frowned upon in Starfleet,” lectured Spock, his hands clasped behind his back. “You should know this better than most, considering you’re fresh from the Academy.”
You pressed your lips together and managed to mumble a soft, “Yes, Commander.” You gripped your PADD and stared at the ground.
“Return to your post.” He paused as he stepped away. “This will be discussed with the Captain.”
You bowed your head more and nodded with another, “Yes, Commander.” You turned on your heel and hurried to the turbo lift, embarrassment hot in your face. Instead of heading back to the science lab like you were meant to – like you were told to by your boss – you headed straight to the Med Bay in search of Christine Chapel, your closest friend on the Enterprise. You needed to tell someone what happened, anyone, before it got around via the Enterprise’s surprisingly quick grapevine.
The Med Bay was quiet, as expected for an early Alpha shift, and you didn’t see anyone immediately, prompting you to more towards the back of the Med Bay. As you did, one of the office doors opened, revealing the cause of your troubles – Dr. McCoy.
You froze.
He ruffled his hair, the dark circles under his eyes prominent. He must have been in the Med Bay since the start of Gamma shift, at least. “Are you alright, Lieutenant?” he asked.
You cleared your throat and nodded, “Yes, Dr. McCoy. I’m…” You coughed. “Perfectly fine. I was actually looking for Christine. Is she in yet?”
Dr. McCoy looked at the cron on the wall. “Not for another two hours.” He frowned. “You’re here awfully early. Are you sure you’re alright, Lieutenant?” he asked.
You nodded. “Fine! I told Commander Spock that I would be working on some of the stellar charts for Orscasian System early today, so I’ve…” You cleared your throat again and looked down, unable to look the good doctor in the eye. “I’ve been working since about mid Gamma shift.”
He frowned. “Well, I’ll tell Nurse Chapel that you came by to see her, then,” he mumbled. You nodded and turned to leave the Med Bay. “Alpha shift starts soon,” he said to your back. You stiffened. “Do you want a coffee? Get you through it?’
You turned back around to face him, gripping your PADD until your knuckles were bloodless. It didn’t go unnoticed. “That sounds lovely, Dr. McCoy,” you said. You waved over your shoulder. “I’ll go get some from the dining hall.”
He waved a hand at you, brushing off your suggestion. “I’ve got a machine in my office.” He pointed to a Bio Bed and commanded, “Sit. Might as well do your physical since you’re here.” He stepped towards his office as you perched on the edge of the Bio Bed. “Everyone’s due date is coming up.”
“Right,” you called after him. He disappeared into his office. You stared at your PADD, hoping that maybe, just maybe, the Bio Bed wouldn’t be reading your heartrate as racing, or that blood pressure was high, or that you were breathing so hard and so fast that you might give yourself a panic attack. Your heart jumped as something chimed – was that the Regenerator? Or a Comm?
“Bones, you’re not gonna believe what Spock just told me!” came Captain Kirk’s muffled voice from Dr. McCoy’s office.
“What, did the hobgoblin finally crack a joke?” the doctor mumbled.
“Nah, you know that Lieutenant? The one you’re always making eyes at? Year behind us at the Academy? Just joined up? Real cute?” the captain asked. You sat up.
“Kirk,” warned Dr. McCoy.
The Captain continued as if he hadn’t been interrupted, “—said that you looked mighty fine in that uniform of yours.”
Your heart dropped. Your ears rang. You scrambled off the Bio Bed just at the Comm was cut off and absconded from the Med Bay, practically booking it back to your workshop in the science lab. You could at least die in solitude there.
You buried yourself into your work as you had promised Commander Spock, working on the stellar charts throughout the rest of Gamma shift and well into Alpha shift. An hour from the end of Alpha, your PADD chimed with a message. You opened it without glancing up, focused on the details of the Orscasian system’s three suns.
The message started to play. “Lieutenant.” You dropped your stylus – that was Dr. McCoy’s voice! He cleared his throat. “If you’re not too busy after Alpha shift, I was wondering if you’d want to grabbed dinner together.” He paused, taking a deep breath. “If you’re not busy,” he repeated. You stared at the message, which continued for a quiet few seconds, then ended with a soft, whispered swear. Tapping your stylus against your desk, you tapped it against your PADD to send a response.
“I’d love to,” you recorded, “I’ll meet you at the Med Bay.”

Of Wings and Sirens
A/N: Okay, this is really shitty but I didn’t have time to edit it. This is my entry for @yourtropegirl‘s Historical AU Challenge.
Summary: The RMS Enterprise get an... unusual passenger.
  Pairing: Pirate!Jim x Siren!Reader
  Words: 855
Tumblr media
The creaking wood was a constant companion in the brig of the mighty ship.
You sat on the floor of the jail cell, carving little drawings into the floor with a small dagger you made sure to hide whenever the guard decided to walk past. It had been two days since the incident and you missed the feel of water on your skin, the sound of waves crashing all around you. You were starting to wonder if the captain had forgotten about you.
Three more days passed. The lack of stimulation was starting to make you antsy. You paced back and forth, not even stopping when the guard came in with a meager meal. It wasn’t until that night - or afternoon, you weren’t entirely sure anymore - when a different officer came into the brig. You froze in the midst of your pacing, trying to hear what words the officer was exchanging with the guard, but they were too quiet, even for your hearing.
A few minutes later, she heard two pairs of footsteps walking toward your cell. You all but dived onto the cot, sprawling out on your back in an attempt to make it look like you hadn’t been eavesdropping. Or trying to, anyway.
The footsteps stopped just outside your cell door. There was a clanging as whoever was out there unlocked the door. Your wings twitched against your back as you forced yourself not to sit up as the heavy wooden door swung open. The first mate - his name was Spock, wasn’t it? - stepped inside, looking much cleaner than the last time she saw him. His ebony wings were folded neatly against his back, almost blocking the guard in the doorway from your sight. Almost
“Hello, Commander!” You greeted him as joyfully as you could. “I trust your day has been well so far?”
The first mate ignored your words and took a step toward the cot. “The captain wants to see you,” was all he said. It was then that you noticed the handcuffs dangling from his fingers. You threw away the first thought that came to mind and sat up instead.
 “Oh, alright,” You said.
You took your time standing up and stretching before you put your hands behind your back and allowed yourself to be shackled. As Commander Spock lead your out way the cell, you glanced at the guard and said, “Much obliged for lettin’ me stay in your place of refuge, cupcake.”
To his credit, he didn’t react.
You didn’t speak again once the two of you were out of the brig, nor did Spock. People stepped of your paths as you walked past. None of them so much as blinked an eye at your scantily dressed form. The commander lead you up three decks above the brig, to an elaborately carved door. He knocked once, but instead of waiting for an answer, he opened the door and guided you into what looked like a study. There were bookshelves covering every wall except for the across the room, which held a porthole window.
Just in front of that wall was a desk and sitting in behind it was a very familiar face.
“I brought the prisoner up, Captain,” He said.
A wicked grin curved your lips. “Why, hello, Captain Kirk!” You said with exaggerated enthusiasm.
Captain James T. Kirk looked at you, his blue eyes scanning you up and down before he glanced at his first mate. “Thank you, Mr. Spock. Return to your post,” He said quietly. Commander Spock left without a word.
“Thank you for the escort!” You called out as he walked out. As soon as the door swung shut, you turned to him. “He could use lighten up a bit, I reckon.”
Captain Kirk didn’t dignify that with an answer. He stood up from his seat and walked around the desk. “What government are you working for?” He asked.
You tilted her head in confusion. “Government?” Then you realized what he meant. “Oh no, no. I’m not a spy,” You said quickly.
“Then why have you been following us?” He asked, crossing his arms.
“Because I didn’t have anything else to do.” You shrugged, stretching your wings out behind you.
 “For three days?”
“Despite what the stories might say, life as a siren tends to be pretty boring when ships aren’t around.”
He tried to hide his surprise, but his wings - with blue feathers the same shade as yours - flared out, giving him away.
You laughed at that. “What, didn’t think sirens were real, did you?”
He glared at you. “No, I just didn’t think that the soulmate principle applied to them as well,” He said defensively. “Or that one would be so cocky.”
It was your turn to glare. “You know, I would love to insult you, but I am afraid I can’t do as well as nature did,” You shot back.
You stared at each other, neither of you daring to say a word.
After what felt like hours, but only a handful of minutes, he sighed and gave in. “What do we do now?”
“Well, it looks like I’m stuck with you.”

Lilium - Khan Noonien Singh x OC
Tumblr media
Summary: The cryotube which Khan has been kept in after being sentenced for his part in the events of STID has malfunctioned, to the point where he’s hanging on to life itself by a thread. All that’s left for commander Zinalya Hamilton to do is to visit him in this last moments, to make one final farewell...
Warnings: ANGST and character death. Seriously, this is probably the most angsty thing I’ve ever written lmao. And there’s also a few mentions of alcohol abuse.
A/N: This is absolutely definitely NOT the real series of events that happens in my Khan x OC ship, it’s honestly just a what-if AU idea that suddenly popped up in my head. The only real series of events in the story of Zinalya x Khan that isn’t AU is the happy ending of Undeniable.  ^^
It was in the late evening stage of the day when captain Jim Kirk received the message from Starfleet Command.
Uhura had been the one to send it through to his quarters, without opening the message herself, upon its arrival in the communication systems of the USS Enterprise. As you probably would have guessed, he wasn't expecting its melancholy contents at all - due to this origin source of the message being Starfleet Command, he initially believed before opening it that it would be a set of new orders for a diplomatic mission to carry out, but the thing is he couldn’t have been more wrong if he tried.
He soon found himself affected by this melancholy content of the message; not only was there a serious recent development to contend with that anyone would be feeling sad about to some kind of degree, but one of the first thoughts that went through his mind was the certain fact that his security chief, commander Zinalya Hamilton, wouldn’t be pleased about it in the slightest.
"You wanted to see me sir-" This security chief herself began to say, but she abruptly stopped in mid-sentence upon seeing the scene before her. She’d just entered into one of the Enterprise’s meeting rooms later that night at the end of her duty shift, having been asked by Kirk to come due to him having something to tell her, but what she hadn’t been expecting was for the other seven senior officer comrades to additionally all be in there, standing around said meeting room with their captain. Scotty, Pavel, Sulu, Spock, Uhura, Bones and Carol Marcus.
"Evening, Zin." Said Dr. McCoy, his voice somewhat somber.
"Hey." She greeted in reply, before a small joking smile appeared on her face. "This isn’t some kind of intervention is it? I mean lately I’ve gotten better with my... ethanol problem, ask anyone." Zinalya still suffered from bouts of longing and hopeless desperation every few days or weeks over the absence of the man who, to put a long story short, she wanted to end up in a relationship with.
Her plan that she’d executed two years prior, back in 2259, was an attempt to convince the Federation court who’d carried out Khan Noonien Singh’s tribunal - after his fear and sorrow-induced retaliation against Alexander Marcus for the magnitude of this admiral’s manipulation against him - to allow the two of them to be sentenced to an exile together on a distant planet with his seventy-two comrades after she’d found herself helplessly falling for him a couple of days or so after he was captured on Kronos, so that they could be with each other and so that he and his fellow Augment friends could start the new life that they’d been looking forward to since the 1990s.
However, this plan of hers had failed, and he was instead sentenced to be placed back into cryogenic stasis and stored with the other seventy-two with no end date to this sentence. Over time, Zinalya’s frustration and despair at the injustice of this situation, the only man who’d ever meant that much to her romantically being taken away and effectively kept in an icy coma most likely until the end of time, had driven her into a reliance upon vodka, beer and sometimes Romulan ale for the purpose of numbing the pain of her now never getting the chance to pursue that possible relationship with Khan. Nowadays, she still smiled less than she used to and still suffered from these sad nights caused by her trains of thought about him, but over nearly the last year she’d been trying to kick the booze habit in the realisation that it was anything but good for her.
"No, it’s not an intervention. But you should probably sit down and brace yourself - what we’re about to day is pretty serious, and to be honest you’re not gonna like it." The CMO answered, the somber tone in his voice not dissipating.
"Okay." Currently a little bit confused at this, she pulled up one of the chairs in front of the table in the middle of this meeting room and perched herself in it. Kirk, Uhura and Chekov were the ones sitting in three more chairs, while the others remained standing in various places around them.
It was Jim’s turn to speak and to begin the revelation of what the communication received earlier had said, but for a couple of moments he was stuck for how exactly to phrase the things he was going to say in the next few seconds. "I was sent a message a couple of hours ago from Starfleet Command: you know that facility in New York where Khan’s been kept with those others...?"
"Yeah, Sierra-Lambda 3. Why?" She momentarily felt a tiny spark of hopefulness at the word “been”, a past tense word, but then she remembered what Bones had just said about how this news that was about to be revealed wasn’t going to be something she’d like in the same amount of time, which was half of a second.
"Well, the message said something’s gone wrong with his cryotube. It’s gone very wrong." Now came the most difficult part of the explanation. The commanding officer took another momentary pause to let out a tiny, almost inaudible sigh of anticipation. "Do you remember how we found out a couple of months after the whole incident that twelve of his friends in the other tubes had died at some point and rounded down their total numbers to seventy-three?"
"Yeah...?" Zinalya was beginning to have a bad feeling about where this conversation was going.
"The thing is, the same kind of errors that threw those twelve tubes out of whack have happened to Khan’s, too." Said McCoy gently. "It's 'cause those things are old technology, so it's a little less easy to keep all of 'em maintained. The life support systems of his cryotube have picked up something in their code after being used for the last couple of centuries ish before three years ago: that life support system just started breaking down."
"The doctors and researchers at the facility in charge of keeping an eye on him and the others tried everything they could to stop it. They prevented him from getting killed, but the malfunction of his life support in the tube has apparently still gotten away with weakening his lungs and heart, and he's... been taken to a hospital in the city." With this same tone, Pavel picked up some of the rest of the explanation from there, being one of her two closest friends. And then there came the underlining fact of the whole thing. The words that the others had all been dreading to tell her the most. "Khan's dying."
"What...?" After having a few of her own seconds of silence upon hearing this, Zinalya's vocal volume was not that much higher than a whisper. "No, he can't be, they must've made some kind of mistake. I mean he's an Augment. He's a superman, as McCoy called him - he's strong. He wouldn't be killed off by something like this."
"It's what killed off those twelve who'd died in the time before he was first woken up in this century, and he's become a victim of the same thing." Scotty, the closest of these two friends, replied to her denial. His eyes contained a sadness born out of his concern for what this matter was going to mean for her emotional state. "They say they've managed to maintain all of the others and these kinds of errors are rare nowadays, but he ended up being on the receiving end of that rarity."
"The doctors at the hospital have managed to save him for the time being and they've given him some sedatives to make it as painless as possible for him, but they've only saved him for a short amount of time. They've said he's got about a day left to live, two at a push." Added Kirk solemnly.
This couldn't be happening, especially not when Zin's time with Khan had been so short. Only a little bit over a week, to be more specific. "So that's it? He's been through so much, practically through hell, and this is how it ends?" Her voice gradually began to raise as she spoke, a noticeable sense of anger creeping into it as well.
"Those guys at the hospital and Sierra-Lambda 3 did everything they could to save him, like Chekov said." Uhura responded, this same kind of sadness in the chief engineer's eyes showing up in her own, as well. "They tried their best, Zinalya."
"Well they should've tried harder!" The half human-half Trill shouted back, her previous frustrations of feeling helpless against the impossibility of her and Khan being able to be together amplifying itself tenfold in this moment. However, she soon looked back on this exclamation a second later in regret, as she realised just as soon that her crewmates were just as unable to stop this as she was. "Christ, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled like that; I know it's not your fault." Her voice wavered at the back of her throat as she found herself involuntarily taking a breath afterwards.
"If we found out that someone close to any of the rest of us was dying we'd be feeling the same way as well." Replied Carol in reassurance.
"You must have held a great amount of endearment towards Khan." Said Spock. Normally he wouldn't be one to get involved in the emotional side of the matter at hand, but if there was anything he'd learned from his Enterprise comrades over the last few years it was that there were times when the decent thing to do was to step up and offer consoling insights into this emotional side. "I am very sorry for you having to face this development, commander Hamilton." The concern on the others' faces was fading into life on his.
"He must've meant quite a lot to you." Sulu gave his own respects.
"People all around me are going through their relationships and everything's coming up sweet and rosey for them, and what the hell do I get left with?" Commented Zinalya bitterly, stopping for a moment before reluctantly releasing one last word in a somewhat more hushed tone. "Nothing."
"I'm sorry, Zinalya." Said Scotty, his own voice additionally a little bit more quiet compared to before. It then dropped again by another notch or two. "We all are."
"Yeah - it's not exactly a mystery how much you were missing him once he'd been sent off to dreamland." Bones' voice didn't contain his usual snarkiness, and was instead laced with the same kind of sympathy which was now mirrored in the voices of the others.
"The message also said we can divert our course to go back to Earth so you can see him if you want, but it's your call. It's up to you whether or not we go." Jim told her.
"I want to see him." Her answer came about five or six seconds later, once again at the volume level which was not that much higher than a mere whisper, while without her consciously realising it, both of her eyes had begun misting up. "So I can say goodbye to him one last time."
The immaculately polished white floors of the corridors in this hospital in New York, as a result, reflected the images of Zinalya, Pavel and Scotty just as perfectly. Sounds that were a cross of sorts between a thump and a click were produced as the heels and soles of their shoes made contact with this ground surface every half of a second, the trio's feet guiding them through the halls towards a certain wing and, once they got there, a certain room, now that they were past the entrance and had found out which room this was. By now they were up on the ninth floor, and of course during their journey through the hospital various doctors, nurses and orderlies had walked past them down both directions of the corridors. The hair and clothes of the three were coated in a layer of wetness because of the fact that they'd just come indoors from the heavy downpour of rain going on outside.
"Do you want us to come in with you?" Asked the Russian, the three of them now standing in front of the door they were looking for. It was the next day on from the revelation to Zin about what the matter at hand was, and after she'd told the others that she wanted to see the man behind this door for the final instance, Kirk had allowed Mr. Sulu to turn the ship around so that they could head back to Earth in order to make this wish happen.
"I'd prefer it if me and Khan were alone." This same woman gave her reply.
"Alright. We'll stay out here and wait for you; just take as long as you want with him, lassie." The engineer told her in a soft and benign tone, giving her a consoling hug in advance which Pavel, in addition, contributed to by joining in.
Taking a moment to psyche herself up for whatever she was about to see next, she took another couple of steps closer towards the door and turned its gleaming metal knob to enter through it and into the room, with the two accompanying her standing back so as to carry out the part where they waited for her.
She definitely needed this brief process of psyching herself up: as soon as she opened the door and stepped in as she did so, the first thing that her green eyes landed on were Khan's own turquoise ones looking back at her, their lids half closed most likely out of exhaustion from his current condition.
It was only to a slight degree, but his normally flawlessly combed jet black hair was a little bit less so. However, there were much bigger changes than this to his appearance compared to the last time she saw him that grabbed her attention more quickly. His skin was pale but not the same kind of paleness that he usually possessed anyway; this kind of pale skin colour he had at the moment was the ghostly kind, and normally there was a sort of twinkle of vigour and depth in his eyes like a shark ready to strike, but that twinkle seemed to have disappeared completely. On some parts of his bare chest were respiration and heart rate monitors with intravenous drips, in addition, being located on his left forearm and the left side of his neck, all of which connected to thin plastic wires that snaked around his torso on his bed. The IVs must have been a solution to another aspect of his new state of health: apparently it had also been reported in the message to Kirk that Khan was too weak even to eat or drink anything. A nasal cannula was coiled around his face just underneath his nose and around the back of his ears and the upper half of his neck, no doubt as a means of helping with the weakening of his lungs.
Seeing him like this made Zinalya feel like she wanted to cry. She'd managed to mostly keep herself from doing this the previous night after she'd heard about his state and had predominantly kept herself calm and collected once she'd gone to bed, but no matter how much she'd tried, actually seeing Khan this weak was nonetheless worse than when she'd pictured it in her mind.
"You must be the commander." Said one of the two nurses who were tending to him right now, just finishing up with checking on his heart rate monitor which was quietly beeping away in the background. It sounded marginally slow.
"That's me." Replied Zin, doing her best to ignore the stinging sensation in the back of her eyes. "Is it okay if the two of us are left alone for a few minutes?"
Diverting his gaze from this officer, Khan looked up at this nurse who'd just spoken, and even though he didn't say anything out loud, he gave a small nod of his head to indicate that this was indeed okay - he trusted her.
The nurse nodded her own head, more noticeably and less slowly. "Alright. We'll be on duty outside." She gave a brief, sympathetic smile before she nodded towards the door while looking at the other nurse on the other side of the room, the two of them making for the door and exiting through it.
To the right of the room were tall glass windows, through which the rain downpour outside could be seen running down it and down the gleaming skyscrapers nearby, and to the left was a vase of white lilies on a white table, these flowers' presence probably being a personal touch for whichever patient might be there. The sunlight outside was faint but was of a colour temperature that stood on the threshold between warmth and coldness.
"It's good to see you, Zinalya." He managed to get these words out, albeit a little bit slowly. From the sound of it, his current condition hadn't affected the baritone pitch of his voice.
She moved across the room towards him and sat down in the chair to the left of his bed, stuck for the words to respond with as she was still in the process of trying to get past the feeling caused by seeing him in such a weak state. "You haven't got any idea how much I'm glad to see you too." She eventually released these words of her own, while the rain could be audibly heard, as well. It was like a curtain of soft, calming white noise representing the world of nature. Although there was the occasional equally soft rumble of some of the dark clouds producing this rain off in the distance, this actually added more to this tranquil atmosphere than it took away; it contributed a sense of depth to the noise.
"How long ago was it, when we last met...?"
"It's 2261 now, so that was two years ago." Answered Zin. "What was the... the first thing you're able to remember happening after getting woken up this time?" She asked her own question a bit hesitantly, as she herself was feeling purely dreadful about this situation so she was reluctant to imagine how he was feeling about the fact that he was dying. From the last few seconds that she’d spent looking at him, her eyes had caught sight of him seemingly holding a white lily in his right hand, not unlike the ones in the vase nearby.
"I have very vague images of being transported to this hospital, but the first clear memory that I have from this most recent awakening is coming to in this bed and being told about my... circumstances for being brought here."
"Did they also send my message ahead to you?" This previous night shortly after the revelation, at her behest, Kirk had sent a reply to the message from Starfleet Command asking for the hospital staff in charge of looking after Khan for his last few days to tell him that Zinalya was on her way to see him.
"They did - that’s why I have this." It took a moment, but he slowly, weakly raised up his right hand, the one that was holding the lily, and loosened some of his grip on it. "Once I knew you were coming, I tried to get up and retrieve a flower for you from the grounds outside, but I was stopped before I’d even finished sitting upright. In fairness, I highly doubt I would have been physically able to complete that task regardless." At first, the small smile which then adorned Khan’s features was created out of the dry humour of this statement he’d just made, but it was soon plain to see that it was additionally born from the fact that, as he’d said a few seconds beforehand, he felt glad to see Zinalya. "One of the nurses agreed to retrieve it for me instead."
As she reached out and took the snowy white flower from his hand, feeling a little bit of the surface of its petals on her fingers, this was the moment when the tears that had previously just been a sting deep down in the back of her eye sockets came into being at the top of both of her cheeks.
"Why did this whole cryotube malfunction have to happen, huh?" Asked Zin, using her own dry humour with a tiny chuckle - one that faded away again very quickly and afterwards became replaced by a sorrowful frown. "Why did you have to go and do this...?" The left one went that little bit further but both of these tears that had now materialised swam down the rest of her cheeks' length.
Although his eyes looked sunken as continuous outward reinforcement of his frailness, the concern showing up inside of them at the sight of this fresh wettening of her face was obvious. Still with some slight difficulty, he once again raised the hand he'd been using until now to hold the flower and tenderly wiped away the tear on the right side of her face, then the left, with his thumb. "I don't know why this had to happen. I suppose fate has chosen me as its new plaything."
"This is weird, too: the last time I saw you was two years ago, but talking to you now's like I only saw you last week or something." Zinalya admitted what she was thinking out loud.
"It's almost funny - I was thinking the same thing." He replied.
"You and me are going to fight this all the way, Khan." She said afterwards determinedly. "We'll find the best medical minds in the entire Federation and we'll go as far as we can go with this."
"That's the only obstacle in our path: there's not that far we can go with the matter." The Augment took a breath, the latest look in his eyes showing up at this moment being one of the softness which he reserved for her. The only woman in this century who'd shown him both clear benevolence and full understanding of his motives and pain back in 2259. "I've been told that this is the end of the line so as to speak, and that there's nothing else able to be done for me except for allowing me to die peacefully."
"You can't die. I mean after all that stuff you and me have been through, you just can't." She used her right hand to wipe this wetness from the tears away from her face, though she knew it was an exercise in futility as there was more coming, while still clutching the lily in her left. "I don't want you to die." After a pregnant pause, she uttered the simple truth of her emotional turmoil.
"I'm sorry Zinalya. I don't want to leave you either, but this appears to be the hand that I've been dealt nonetheless." He winced in the pain from the strength required while doing so, making her wish as she heard it that he'd just continued to stay still, but Khan turned to his right ever so slightly and reached out his left hand to hold hers comfortingly, this physical contact with him easing the sadness inside her mind to this same ever so slight degree. "You were a happy dream during those days when I needed you the most." It made him wish he'd had Zin in his life before the first 23rd century awakening, before his escape with his companions aboard the SS Botany Bay in 1996, as a saviour to make the process back then of him trying to forget some of the nightmarish days of his adolescence that little bit easier. These friends of his were people he could count on and who he trusted with his life, but Zinalya's presence seemed to unlock a new level of the ability to be himself and to say what was going on in his heart. "Those moments with you have been some of the best ones that I can remember." A tear from his own eyes suddenly showed up just beneath the right one.
Leaving the lily in her lap, she grasped on to his hand with the other one, so that she could now hold it with both. Knowing that, in turn, she too could entirely and completely be herself around him, she allowed herself to let loose with the amount of tears she shed. "I can't remember a time I didn't feel excited when I was around you. You're not just handsome and basically a sweetheart, you're also a man who brings exhilaration and adventure in your wake."
"I'm afraid flattery won't postpone my death date." He remarked in reply to this with another of his chuckles, putting more dry humour to use. He was, however, still touched by her words.
"No but at least I gave it a shot." She managed to raise a tiny smile herself. Two could play at this game.
While his tear traversed his cheek, his breathing became hitched. The heart rate monitor had also slowed somewhat now. "Do you think I'll see her?"
"Who, your mum?" The half Trill hybrid acted on the guess forming in her brain at who he meant by the word 'her'.
He nodded. "I think I might be about to see her again, and Tanvir, but the truth of that possibility lies in whether what people believe about the existence of hell and heaven is true, and even then it’s a question of which religion in particular was correct." He took a breath once he’d finished speaking - evidently long sentences were getting the better of him somewhat now that he was on death’s doorstep.
Zinalya shook her head, while still not being able to stop the full onslaught of the many tears she was releasing. "I don’t know." Her voice, understandably, was strained. "I don’t know what’s going to be waiting for you, but if heaven and hell do exist then whoever’s in charge up there had better send you to heaven, or at least some kind of medium place between the two."
"Or else you’ll confront them yourself?"
"If it’d mean you getting a chance at a good afterlife, yeah."
Over the next few seconds, he managed to conjure up another small smile. "Or perhaps the beliefs about reincarnation are true, and some time from now I could be reborn as a horse."
"Why a horse?"
"I think running through wide open fields with the wind soaring through my mane will be fun. But whichever kind of afterlife awaits me, I hope I get to see Tanvir and my mother again." He said poignantly. He was only a toddler when Sarina Kaur died, so not only would he be happy at the prospect of interacting with her once more after all these years, but based on the amount of affection she’d shown to him during those first happy years of his life, he had a feeling that she’d be just as joyous to see her little boy again, all grown up. And he'd be doubly happy if he also got the chance to be reunited with probably the greatest friend he'd ever had before said friend's death at the age of fifteen, the boy who had been the best at helping him, and some of the others, for that matter, with trying to get past the emotional turbulences caused by their captivity at the hands of the scientists who'd given them their abilities. "And it'll be nice if I meet Noonien there, as well." Noonien Prasad, although not related to Khan by blood due to the fact that the latter hadn't been conceived from a biological father of any kind, was Sarina's boyfriend until his own death from cancer while she was pregnant, so because of this closeness to her he would've most likely ended up becoming a fatherly figure.
"I hope so too, you deserve to find all three of them." Without fully realising it, the grip of both of her hands on the one of Khan’s she was still grasping tightened. "I’ve heard about this belief called karma, where people are rewarded in their next life depending on how much they suffered in the last one - basically what goes around comes around."
"The sum of a person’s actions." He gave another nod of his head, in recognition of this karma belief after having grown up in India during his childhood and, as a result, being taught about the Hindu faith from an early age. Throughout his life he’d never really followed any kind of religion himself, so he wasn’t sure whether or not he’d be allowed to get in on the action of heaven or reincarnation due to not being a believer. Whether what was coming for him was just a black void which he wouldn’t even consciously be aware of at all. Basically, when there are as many different religious beliefs and ways of faith floating around as there were here on Earth, including atheism, it tends to leave your mind in a bit of a jumble when you try to predict what will happen to you after your eventual demise.
Suddenly, his hitched breathing made a return, more so than it had been the last time.
"No, no, Khan, you can’t go." Said Zinalya, her own voice now becoming even more strained. Her grip on his hand became more soft and gentle again. "Whether you’ve got the power to stop this or not, you still can’t just go!"
As an attempt to comfort her again, his maximum moving speed was still rather slow but he released this hand from hers and used both of his to reach upwards towards her face, gently caressing his fingers against the sides of her cheeks. "To speak truthfully, I’ve spent a fair while in the past wondering how I was going to die, yet this way is possibly one of the ones I expected the least." His eyes conveyed a deep kind of fearfulness which she'd never seen from him until now, and which rocked him to his core. A pause set in for a moment or two. "I don't want to die either."
"Well you're not going to!" She exclaimed defiantly, especially upon noticing that his heart monitor had slowed down again by another couple of notches. Her face was a mess of clammy tears that poured out from the depths of her heart; she could feel both a small release in pressure and a tightening of it simultaneously, in the depths of this heart of hers, as she carried on releasing said tears. There was nothing she could do to stop them even in the slightest. "Remember that scheme I tried out back then, during the trial? How we were going to take each other's hand and run off to some new place once it was all over? We were going to be free to start anew there. There was going to be pretty much nothing we couldn't do together..." The last moments with each other were upon them, meaning Zin was now more desperate than she'd ever been so far to not let the life force of the man she adored sail away down the river. "We were going to have such good times to come..."
"Sssssssssshhhhhh..." Khan soothed, gradually retracting his hands and letting them fall down onto hers, curling his fingers around those of her own hands one final time. "There's nothing that can be done now." His pauses between sentences were growing longer. "This is the way it ends... not with a bang, but with a whimper..." He quoted from the poem The Hollow Men.
"I don't think I've ever hated poetry more than I do right now." Commented Zinalya, this latest attempt at humour to ease the pain of the matter failing to accomplish this desired effect.
"I can feel it..." He said. His voice was at its most quiet volume she'd heard over the last few minutes. "I can feel my heart getting slower, and slower, and slower..." He breathed out, with his face being moisturised by the presence of not just one but two of his own teardrops trickling from his eyes. This provided that extra yank on the young woman's heartstrings. "I love you so much, Zinalya..." Although it was at its smallest size yet, there came another return of his smile.
Hearing these words out loud left her with no other choice but to reply with another plain, simple truth. "I love you too Khan... I love you..."
She found her voice fading out as, over the next few excruciatingly painful seconds, she watched the gentle glint in his eyes as proof of his soft spot for her also fade away. He was grateful that he got to pass away not only with the subject of his endearment sitting with him but additionally while hearing such a calming sound coming from the rain outside the window.
With his eyelids closing a tiny bit more, the expression on his face drained out, and she felt his fingers around her hands go limp.
Then there was the unwavering sound of the monitor flatlining.
He was gone.
Now that there was no one left in the room to offer reassurance, her newfound lack of control over her crying reached an all-time high. Zinalya realised in her mind that this must have been similar to the sadness Sarina was feeling when Noonien died back in 1969, but what she additionally realised was that at the time - although, again, he wasn’t a blood relative to Khan - Sarina had a baby on the way and still had a continuation of her bloodline to love and look after.
Zin didn’t have any of that. The future prospect of accomplishing her life goal of having her own children someday or even just getting married had died with this “superman”. Not to mention the fact that she’d finally found a man who she felt could have been Mr. Right, which had been made even better by him having revealed these two years ago that he experienced the same emotions about her in return, and yet he’d been well and truly ripped away from her forever by nothing more than a malfunction of the cryotube within which he had spent these years until now being kept asleep.
Despite her hand currently trembling, she reached out her left hand and tenderly used her thumb and index finger to fully close his eyelids. There was a sort of peaceful and serene look about him; maybe one could pretend that he was just sleeping again with his eyes in this state of being completely shut.
With her not knowing whether or not she’d have any other emotion left in her once she was done, Zinalya’s head dropped as she began to sob.

AU Where everything is the same except Spock runs into Jim before the events of the movie. Mostly PWP, but the plot that exists is heavy on Spock-centric character study.
Spock and Nyota deal with the fact their relationship is not exactly ideal, when Captain Pike promotes Spock to first officer, by deciding to break up for a little while and try to convince people they aren't together. Spock ticks off far too many people, and Jim just wanted to pass the Kobayashi Maru - he never meant to ruin everything like this, he didn't know. Meanwhile, Spock wonders if everything would be better off if he didn't feel anything.
