More Polar Express doodles! I've left some notes under the cut if you would like to read, it's mostly notes about the story of the Polar Express and how these two fit in, but nothing extensive. (Probably for the best, I don't think it would be coherent if I went any further.)

All right, I have some thoughts about this movie. I enjoyed watching it for the first time and got so excited that I watched the film again. While watching, I immediately picked out characters to put the subway twins as because I am so normal, and here is a little explanation. To start, in my head, all the characters that run the train are spirits or ghosts, much like how the Hobo is portrayed. While the other characters are not as prominent, there are a few hints here and there that point to such. For example, in the Glaciar Glutch scene, the conductor doesn't wrap the safety belt around himself; he only wraps it around the two kids. That at least points to the fact that he may be a spirit, as he doesn't have as much care for his person. Furthermore, he is on a magic train and has been doing it for years; he's a spirit. I'm sorry, but he is. So I chose Ingo as the conductor because, in the movie, the conductor rarely smiles; he also cares a lot about the kids, as shown by his body language. Also, in my mind, the conductor was very hard to read, but that may also be caused by the fact that the expressions were very realistic in this movie (I suspect motion capture), and I have a hard time reading facial expressions. Now, Emmet is the funnier one. I chose Emmet as the Hobo because of my personal headcanon that Emmet has the crazy uncle energy rather than the more fatherly energy. The Hobo within the movie also smiles a lot, almost constantly, and is just generally chaotic. Instead of outwardly telling the kids what to do and what not to do, he instead scares the crap out of them to teach them a lesson and further their adventure throughout the movie. He also only chooses to help in the most dire of times and in the most ridiculous way possible; think of skiing on the top of the train and tapping the emergency brake on the caboose. He makes a pun instead of just telling the main character that there is a brake, and then he poofs back out of existence. Also, the conductor clearly knows that the Hobo exists, as he alludes to it in the movie when the main character asks what the man who saved the conductor looked like. The conductor only responded, "Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can't see." That has been my ramble, and I apologize if none of this made sense; I've been up since four this morning running off of straight caffeine, and I've been all over the place.

okay so i've been listening to the dorohedoro manga soundtrack for a while now, and my morning has been a little hectic so i decided to just ramble about all the songs and what/who i associate them with, and also which songs from the anime ost they remind me of (since the anime ost is very much inspired from the manga ost)

Redacted, Recalcitrant, Repressed - khost: this one in my head is literally curse/risu theme and you cannot convince me otherwise Ever. Man Inside The Mouth from the anime ost is im pretty sure inspired from this song too so it All just makes sense. also the title itself reminds me of risu and the way he is and whatnot (im so shit at explaining good lird) also this is me just being insane but i think the voice of the guy singing KINDA fits risu more (the deeper more monstrous voice sounds like curse in my head too), like i love his actual voice too but when i read the manga i definitely dont imagine him with it i expected something more raspy(?), meanwhile aikawa being the one with the smoother voice (his raspy voice fits too giving that Kaiman and yadda yadda) Dont ever let me talk abt risu drhdr bro i dont stfu

Blaka Smoko - VOODOOM: i love this song so much but kai's stupid fucking face pops up in my head when i listen to it and i DONT KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH IT!!! though yeah uh this is pretty much either his song or the cross eyes in general since the lyrics are "i sell black smoke"..though the deranged laugh really reminds me of him solely. imagine a version of the drhdr manga where black smoke is like weed and they smoke that shit and get high i Think thats rlly funny i dunno what else to say tbh i think me associating the song w kai is preventing me from having too many thoughts about it. However i hope when he like shows up fr (not just in flashbacks) the anime ost makes a remix of this song cuz it genuinely fits (also i just love how this song directly mentions nikaido and kaiman, although a bit nonsensical given the context)

Dorohedoro Zombie Slushi - Candie Hank: im so certain 1000手観音 and another song (i cant remember which one) from the anime ost sampled from this one lmfao. anyway this one just reminds me of zombie ebisu, or ebisu in general. not even like living dead day, literally just zombie ebisu. its probably the vocals tbh, someone in a youtube comment was complaining abt them and another person replied "just imagine ebisu singing it" and i cant get it out of my head now. i can totally see her sing this song, especially knowing shes canonically interested in the manga ost album (you can see her read the songs of it while checking it out in like episode 4? i think? the one where they follow doll risu around and end up in some cheap clothing store)

Eating food and fighting Wizards - Shitwife: this one makes me very nostalgic, i like how its one of the few songs that isnt just pure nonsensical chaos. like i love those too, infact im bummed out the anime ost doesnt have more chaotic songs given the manga is literally incomprehensible sometimes, but i like how this song kinda shows the more coherent and cheerful side of the story. of course this is just kaiman theme to me, i mean the title and all. i think kaiman would really like this song, he would def listen to it. it also reminds me of that scene where him and nikaido are driving in their motorcycles, it gives the vibe of a drive in the middle of the night to me anyway, not much to say for this one too, i just think its really nice (also the drums go crazy hard)

Enter the Hole - NAH: lovely magic predecessor LOL. perfect for me honestly cuz lovely magic is my fav song from the anime soundtrack. This one just reminds me of hole, i dunno. the brief ethereal part reminds me of the past of the hole though, before the lake of refuse was created (i forgot what they called that shit in the official translation forgive me..lake of refuse sounds cooler either way). thats all tbh

She is a devil - Hanali: devil nikaido theme song what can i say...i literally want this song beat for beat to play at the scene where nikaido grows her devil tail and gets devil high (if they even animate season 2 that far) either that or when theyre selling gyoza at the department store and she goes devil high again and starts beating ass. its so perfect for those scenes also i like to think the distorted singing at the very beginning is like what humans hear when a devil sings, i know it should be more ear bleeding giving the reaction everyone has in canon but whateva!!! also also i like to imagine nikaido was probably hearing something similar while her tail was growing and she was going crazy, i think maybe hearing the singing of devils in your head while slowly turning into one is a cool idea

LIZARD HEAD - Dr. Das: i cant lie this ones...a little boring for me. like the beat is cool and all, but i think this is the one song i have the least to say abt. to reference another youtube comment, they said smth abt imagining kaiman fucking around in hole to this song, and yeah. i see it. i think if the anime animates that little bonus(?) comic abt how kaiman spends his day in hole, they should use smth similar to this song

Transformations - Shackleton: ok i lied this is the one i have to say least about. i dont mind 10+ minute songs, but damn this ones even more boring to me. the pissing sounds arent helping either LOL. though i think if they had to play this song somewhere, or a variation of it, maybe it fits best at the part where kawajiri is making nikaido do the devil exam in his house or whatever...idk....

Dorohedoro - Igorrr: ALRIGHT BACK TO YAPPING. this song is so fucking good, dare i say its my favorite of the whole ost. and im not the only one, everyone seems to love this one. its literally just TIC TOC predecessor but even better. the classical music and opera singing inserted into this absolute chaos is insane and i cant think of a song that fits shin more honestly. like this is literally shin theme. it perfectly mixes his calm and rational self with the deranged outbursts he has. ive heard people say shin is a boring character and i genuinely cant wrap my head around it like HELLO...not only is his design just cool as fuck, but he has such interesting personality? my boy went through absolute hell and grew up from an aggressive and snarky kid to a calm and if i may say, empathetic guy. like he cares about the people around him, he was carrying three guys (one with his fucking mouth mind you) that passed out because of the rain flooding the underground basement. he refuses to kill people who are weak with magic, and generally doesnt really like going on killing sprees unless its a life or death situation (which since kid has made him go crazy, i like to think its probably cuz it increases his heartbeat and being a human+sorcerer maybe doubles the adrenaline this way). also the way he has inhumanely high pain tolerance, he can have his guts splattered on the ground and still manage to walk, to the point it even weirds EN out. like you gotta be some freak to get en concerned for you (or be kikurage lol). sorry this turned into a shin rant more than the song itself, i just cant believe so many people dont see how cool shin is. like hes not even my most favorite character but i will protect all the drhdr characters i like (which is most of them). anyway moving on

The Hole - Ghengis: alot of ppl say they think of hole (the place) when they listen to this song, but me personally?this song screams hole the entity, and artificial devil kai. like this song FEELS like its oozing with the sludge and that feeling every sorcerer that gets in contact with hole "magic" feels. i like to think the headaches they get is equivalent to the beat of the song LOLL. like just super loud and painful pulsing headache that can leave you paralyzed on the ground. anyway, i dont have that much to say, i just want this song to play at the central department store arc, OR. when artificial devil kai is first shown thas all

Don't Think, Just Kill - Roly Porter: i lied again this is the one i have least to say about. sorry. literally my only thoughts are that one of the songs playing during the living dead day episode is inspired by it but i frogor which one

Kaimans Head - Dead Fader: to compensate the fact i mightve lied once again im gonna ramble about something mildly related. so the one youtube upload i found of this song uses this one fucking risu fanart that legit makes me shit my pants. its honest to god the scariest freaking fanart ive seen of a character i like. its not like Shiver me timbers scary, its just so unsettling to me, like WHO COOKED THIS UP. WHO DREW THIS. i know hayashida would love it. she wishes she made risu this scary and not the catboy babygirl beautiful princess with a disorder she created (/J). anyway uh, this song goes pretty hard, i like it, i just dont have much to way besides that i like the beat maybe. also heres link to the youtube upload with the picture if u wanna know what im talkin abt

Radio 538 - Dow Jones Brotherhood: because the first time i listened to the songs was on youtube, i found this song pretty much last and uh. i dunno its cool! for some reason it reminds me of the cross eyes? ive no clue why it just does. it reminds me specifically of how all of them are basically just worshipping some guy half (if not most) of them havent even seen the face of. i like how the whole thing is basically just a cult. people built statues of the boss, tattooed his face on their hands so they never forget it, And the elites...oh those poor little guys. closest to the boss and got psychologically tortured with killing thousands of sorcerers daily and left to deal with the incomprehensible shit their boss does, while slowly building suspicion and disgust towards him, but unable to do anything because of how far theyve gone into this. like can you imagine how miserable dokuga and tetsujo must feel knowing their devotion to kai led to all their friends killed. id just die bro this is so fucked... anyway, kewl song👍 i love the cross eye elites

Stay down zombies! - Ed Cox: i honestly love how lowkey dramatic this one is. ALSO the accordion tune from el corazon is im pretty sure taken from this one! which makes two shin references yippee!!! i like how this one kinda mixes calm music with breakcore (do not erm akshually me on this one i dont care), just like how igorrr does. i dunno its just a cool song, though PERSONALLY i dont think it fits living dead day, it reminds me more of that scene where shin remembers his mothers death, and then slowly turns into a zombie. it gives off that vibe giving how the song progresses from dramatic and a bit somber, while the beat starts creeping in, accompanied by the accordion that i literally will never not associate w shin in general

ANYWAY WOW THATS ALL!!!! if even one person bothered to read all this, thank you. i love yapping about dorohedoro i love silly manga about a bunch of freaks and freak stuff and i am obsessed with hayashidas taste in music, knowing she picked all those artists cuz she likes their music makes absolute sense considering the kind of art she makes. i love you q hayashida im your biggest fan. also if you notice any grammatical errors pls remember english is not only my second language, but i also barely slept last night so that's my excuse

First thoughts from just one watch under shitty circumstances with bad internet and worse sound:

RAMBLING FRANK vs RUSSIA THOUGHTS

I was very worried about this episode with how sacred the S5 DENNIS System episode is to us all. Didn't want a Thunder Gun 4 situation on our hands and thankfully they avoided it so hard! I think having the plot with Charlie, Frank, the mums, Uncle Jack and chess really helped out to make it feel more than a direct sequel.

SINNED -> DENNIS -> SINNED -> DENNIS — I'm so impressed with this. How did I, a wholeass Sunny fan, miss this for so long?! Three cheers to whoever came up with that inversion, really! Definitely something that happened in the writer's room and made everyone lose their shit for sure. I wonder who it was, could be Meg or another writer too, given how collaborative they all are!

And can I just say, Dennis the Restaurant Manager... oh how I love you so much! The Waitress is Getting Married is a personal favourite of mine and I wasn't expecting a bit of a redux of that whole situation.

I was so worried about all the "Mac getting a boyfriend and it being Ryan Reynolds" theories and I absolutely wanted none of that. Everyone had speculated it to death and it wouldn't have been fun anymore (not to mention I do not care for RR in my Sunny, I'm sure he's fine, but I don't need his and Rob's PR relationship filtering through into my dickandball show no I don't "find them cute" and I won't elaborate here anymore).

I know we'd guessed that Johnny could've been Dennis catfishing Mac, but it definitely felt like we were doing an Insane Fan Speculation more than anything — and for it to turn out to be correct! And in the best way, because we never could've seen the vibrating anal beads coming!! That's the best kind of "called it but it's still unpredictable".

It really broke my mind, this episode did. And don't even get me started on the Macdennis and queer Dennis of it all! As a longtime believer in Bisexual Dennis, I won so hard! All of us Queer Dennis Truthers won so fucking hard!

[Unpopular Take incoming] This is the first Sunny episode credited to Meg for writing that has felt so wholly "Classic Sunny" and super fuckin hilarious to me. I always appreciated her understanding of the characters and she's always a very solid writer, but this is the first time where I felt myself thinking ok, you she write RCG/Hornsby/Marder-Rosell/Chernins-level of an insane chaotic Sunny episode with multiple belly laughs and not just slightly Community-fied versions of the gang.

The closest her writing has felt like true Sunny to me before this was Dee Day, so I'm glad to see her grow and improve too, and I wonder if the podcast rewatch has helped in that regard! Must also help to have a classic S5 structure to play off in The D.E.N.N.I.S. System! (And ofc writing is collaborative, so well done to RCG and all the writers who pitched ideas and rewrites that ended up shaping this episode!)

I knew Heath Cullens directing meant a good chance of some interesting camerawork (and I've gotta say that even The Gang Inflates had some more dynamic shots than we've been getting in some of the later years and it's got to be the Cullens directing), but I wasn't expecting a whole visual callback to Being Frank! Loved it.

And the editing! The DENNIS System has always been great for cutaway gags and fun little inserts, so I loved seeing that carried out here with the cuts to Mac and Dee fucking up their dates and then finally pulling out the Magic Tissue of Mummy Issues (oh the potential for meta especially with the twins!). The pacing was so good!

Sunny pacing needs to feel like Mac crashing Dee's car into a wall while we are all Charlie watching it in real time and screaming when it's over.

Parental issues everywhere this season, especially with the mums. Reynolds kids, I can't wait to lovingly put you under my microscope. Once I've rewatched this episode with good sound.

Also just in general, the SINNED system just says SO much about our babygirl's psychology, does it not? Why did so much of it sound like self-insert speeches, like he's been doing this to Mac or smt? Don't even talk to me about The Gang Chokes!

Sidenote: I love whenever the show references news stories which were super fucking big at a very specific time in a very specific niche, especially with my whole family being so chess-obsessed. The cheating scandals and anal bead… never thought I'd see a Sunny crossover but can't say I'm not loving the shit out of it!

Ch 1: Jogging Laps

Summary: After being knocked over, your morning is hijacked by the pair of students responsible, and your mind is jogging laps trying to figure out one question: What in the world just happened?

A/N: I have once again been dragged along by my own story, I have no control of what happens lol

In all seriousness tho, I was not expecting some of this stuff to happen right off the bat, but we're going with it. Also, this is NOT going to be a love triangle---Akaashi is a very important character, but I am not adding him to the romance problems TvT he just got a surprising amount of attention this chapter

Your first day of school turned out… interesting, to say the least. Chaotic may have been a better word—maybe hectic. Or perhaps unexpected and eventful were more accurate. Confusing? Not quite, save for the lingering question of how you got to this point in the back of your mind.

You found yourself at your assigned desk, running through English synonyms for your experiences that day and trying to think of Japanese synonyms in the process. Your teacher was running through class expectations for the year that you only vaguely listened to but never fully locked your attention on. It wasn't intentional; your mind was simply jogging laps to process what had happened that morning.

You recalled the course of events once more, attempting to grasp some sort of understanding of the question that ran through your head over and over: What in the world just happened?

After you had been pulled to your feet, eyes wide and taken aback, you finally got a good look at the person who you assumed had knocked you over—and you could immediately tell how that happened. He towered over you, still holding on and moving you around slightly to inspect for any signs of injury. From the way he had picked you up with such ease, you gathered he was pretty well built under his partially disheveled uniform. His hair was two-toned in black and silver and slicked back into what you would describe as spiky owl ears—the thought almost made you chuckle, but you kept it to yourself.

You glanced over to the left in the direction of his friend. His stature was not quite as tall or nearly as visibly brawny, and he was much more put together. He gave you a very brief look of sympathy and apology that you barely caught before your eyes turned back.

The one still holding you by the shoulders finally spoke a coherent, complete sentence that wasn't some broken variation of “Are you okay? I'm so sorry!” When he deduced you had not sustained any wounds due to his carelessness, he said, “I'm so stupid, I'm sorry. Glad you're not hurt, though!” He gave you a grin, one that was somewhere between sheepish, apologetic, and lighthearted.

“I told you, you should have been paying attention,” his black-haired friend interjected dryly. “You might want to let her go, though.”

Something seemed to click beneath his owl ears that reminded him he was still clinging to you. He pulled his hands back finally, chuckling as he scratched the back of his head. You smiled and sniffled whatever remains of your previous tears were left.

“It's no worries,” you reassured. “I should have been paying attention, too, but I didn't know where I was going.”

“Oh, are you new? A transfer student, maybe?” The shorter of the two asked while his companion went to pick up your bag and hand it back to you.

“Was it that obvious?” You joked, brushing off the remaining dust, pebbles, and strays bits of grass from your uniform. You tried your best to straighten out your outfit—the first uniform you'd ever had to wear to school before—before slinging your bag back over your shoulder and across your body.

The one to the left tilted his head slightly, replying, “Well, you were speaking English earlier, so I just took a guess.”

“And you have a strong accent,” his friend interrupted. He grinned brightly and held out his hand, unexpectedly blurting out, “I'm Bokuto Koutarou, by the way!”

You probably would have shook his hand if you didn't get distracted by your own thoughts. “Bokuto's your… surname, right? Last name, first name, I think. Sorry, I haven't met many people since I got here even though it's been a couple weeks,” you rambled. “Also, sorry if I get anything wrong, I'm kind of new to this whole ‘being in Japan’ thing.” You gesture with your hands as you speak, using your fingers as quotation marks near the end.

Bokuto laughed lightheartedly, and his friend almost joined him. “Don't worry, you are doing okay,” he said—to your surprise—in English. It was a bit stiff, but you could understand it just fine—it was about as good as your Japanese. You turned to him, the faucet of your thoughts running out of your mouth quickly closed, and your jaw hung open. “My name is Akaashi Keiji. You can just call me Akaashi,” he added.

For some reason, his words seemed to hit you right in the chest. Maybe it was because he went through the effort to say them in your own language, or maybe it was because you were still emotional and unsure of how living in Japan would go. A couple of subtle deep breaths were enough to stop the tears threatening to well.

“My name is Y/n– I mean, L/n Y/n,” you replied, making sure to correct yourself. “Please just call me Y/n, I'd feel weird being called by my last name.” You held out your hand with a hopeful smile, shaking their hands in turn. I have no idea why I just did that, you thought in reference to the handshake. That felt way too formal.

You shook your head softly at your own thoughts before continuing, “It's nice to meet you, Akaashi and… Bokuto.” You took a guess in calling him that, not entirely sure which name to use. You were already uncertain if you were being impolite, but the wide grin you got in return told you it was fine.

The whole situation went by in a blur to the point you almost had to ignore your own awkwardness, finding yourself just trying to form sentences. It somehow made you both anxious and relieved by having to focus solely on the conversation. There was no time to think about how or why the conversation was happening in the first place.

You briefly pulled out your phone, and your heart leapt in your chest when you saw the time. School would be starting in seven minutes. “Oh no, I have no idea how to get to class—” You looked between Bokuto and Akaashi, the panic of unfamiliarity rising in you once again.

When you asked if they knew the way when you mentioned your class, Bokuto piped up, “That's on the way to my class! You should totally come with me, I can show you where it is!” Before you could give any sort of answer, grabbed you by the arm and started to almost race into the building.

You had just enough time to wave at Akaashi and for him to see the flustered, stunned look on your face. He shook his head, putting his hands in his pockets and heading to class at a much more leisurely pace—he didn't bother trying to catch up. He had the sneaking suspicion that this year was about to be a very entertaining one.

Bokuto had dragged you a good while before you had managed to get him to slow down, saying you couldn't tell where you were going and needed to commit it to memory. Eventually, you had made it to your class. You found it odd that the classroom was just open with no teacher inside. You had glanced around, confused, but didn't bother asking about it.

In the time it took to get to where you needed to go, it was evident that Bokuto was fairly popular. He had loudly greeted people along the way with a shining smile and enthusiastic waves.

A feeling started to eat away at you—a guilty emotion that brewed of envy, discomfort, and something else you couldn't quite place. You were grateful that he had shown you around, but a nagging in your mind told you it was just to make up for his first impression. And seeing him so carefree and able to talk to people so casually made you infinitely more aware of your standing. The realization that he may have been that comfortable due to years of enrollment at the school didn't make you feel any better.

You now sat at the back of the class, running through the busy morning once more. You wondered mindlessly if you would ever run into Akaashi and Bokuto again as you listened to your teacher. T_T omg you are too kind. i'm just a wee little niku.

i feel like my writing process is kind of. chaotic. i very rarely do outlines or anything like that. so it's honestly a miracle that my fics come out even slightly coherent. generally speaking, though, my fics usually are centered around a particular scene or character interaction and i build off that- how to get to that scene and what happens after.

that being said, my process may not work for you, and that's okay. i know some writers who are very meticulous about doing outlines and stuff like that. i think it certainly does help to write things down because you can really organize your thoughts. i just end up daydreaming the same scene over and over LMAOOO. it's all about finding out what works for you personally.

i guess that counts as a tip LOL.

i think also, and this is my personal belief, it is always best to write for yourself, write what makes you happy, and what you want to read. and the reason is that the only person who will 100% guaranteed read every single thing you write is you. i don't mean this in a pessimistic sort of way but like... you are your main audience!! cater to yourself and the things you like! the things that make you happy!! just have fun with it! and surely, surely other people who like what you have to write will follow! and on that note!! it is so much fun talking about fic to your friends. like sometimes i'll pop into my friends' dms and traumatize them with some fic idea i have (sorry moda).

i think ultimately, the most important thing is to have fun with it and enjoy yourself.

Overview

Since I’ve come out of my introverted gremlin cave and started to actually work regularly on my writing as well as posting my stuff on here, I’ve decided to structure my blog a bit. Mostly to prevent people from getting absolutely lost in this chaotic mess.

Hey wanna hear about my oc?

warning, insane rambling that may or may not be coherent, and very long, and possibly bad character design

word count: 978 (so not that long now that i saw the numbers)

So like ive been thinking about this lil guy / gal / nonbinary pal for about 3 days and i LOVE this OC,

So this is Jinx, my OC, they live in a world where like, superpowers and stuff,

Jinx is genderfluid and he can shapeshift at will (wow, sana all) (also I've been thinking that maybe she can copy powers as well, so like they can be a copycat kinda guy?), Jinx has a twin brother Aegis,

Jinx stuff (idk what to call it):

-He's a troublemaker

-really loves candy

(edit: Real name no longer Casey, thought too much about Caseys civilian life and now they're a separate person)

-allergic to birds (everytime she sneezes their hair and eyes changes color)

-eye color is purple and gold (idk how to make faces so that's why they don't have a face DX)

-since hes a troublemaker and childish it often leads to them being underestimated, she uses this to their advantage

-usually wears glasses but uses their shapeshifting to make their eyesight better

-their an anti-hero, and a chaotic one at that, they switch sides whenever they want, they can be a villain one day, a hero the next, or just annoying to both sides

-his weapons are harmless, Jinx doesn't really fancy violence, so she aims to stop his enemies without hurting them (at least fatally) i haven't really decided on one yet, but i do have a list of items

Bolas (she can wrap this around enemy legs)

staff (maybe they can trip enemies?)

Yoyo (just because it looks fun, and maybe he can wrap it around enemies?)

paint gun (yknow, maybe it can glow in the dark and help spot enemies)

I've been thinking on giving Jinx energy drinks so that she can keep his energy up (also because for their backstory I've been thinking that Jinx could be a nurse so she doesn't get much sleep, but idk about the nurse thing, energy drinks yeah)

Purple and Gold rope (he can tie up enemies, plus i think it looks neat, and Jinx can dangle from roofs surprising people, which fits with hercharacter,)

he could just straight up go empty-handed, just using their charm to win (like baiting enemies to traps)

gun maybe like marbles to make enemies slip?

Then again i can make it so that Jinx has all of this, but like, their weapons change like their gender, like one day she can use Bolas, and another they use a staff

also, im gonna be honest, Jinx is kindaaa a self-insert, Jinx is like, someone who i want to be and stuff (like dang i wish i had shapeshifting)

Now lemme talk about their DESIGN, cause that's what i want to show off the most

again here is the base I used

This is their Non binary design, for Jinxs overall design i wanted to make like, something that kids like i guess? Like Candy, Space Arcades, etc. for this design i used like, an arcade floor for their jacket, same with the gloves

then i used paint for their pants, their boots uhh, i didn't really think much of the boots, this is also the first design i made, (kinda why the other two are much better)

also, this is a reference that Jinx like games and stuff,

i split it with black and white to like, show off that they're split between hero and villain, good and bad, (insert other stuff like that)

this is also the form Jinx frequents the most,

this is Jinxs girl design, i wanted to make her design candy and sweet food related, at first i wanted to do cotton candy, then it spiraled into this,

so shes split between chocolate and strawberry, (kinda like black and white), I'm gonna admit that i took inspiration from Vanellope von Schweetz in her sprinkle hair design,, and you'll see that her shoes kinda have like a drip thing on it, i was inspired by donuts for the shoes,

true to her trickster nature, whenever Jinx is a girl, if someone tries to fight her, she tries to pull out the "you wouldn't hit a woman, would you?" card (i think its just a funny little gag lmao [oh! and maybe whenever they're wearing glasses they would pull the "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses would you?" {proceeds to hit a guy WITH glasses /ref}])

this is also kinda like a reference that Jinx really likes candy and sweet stuff

this is the guy design of Jinx. so like, a lot of us had a space phase when we were kids so yeah (also, most of us probably cried at the fact the sun would explode in 5 million years)

I spent SO LONG thinking what his design should be and this is what i got,

so like i made his design looke floaty (??? as in like, it looks like he's floating ig), so he has these thick boots that look like its keeping him down, his hair looks like its floating

then the space design, is it sad that the thing im most proud of is his shoelaces? like the fade and stuff!!! Very cool!!!

the nebula design on his jacket, pants and gloves I'm okay with, but it doesn't really fit his other designs, but i like it,

his shoes have an okay design, like the black shoe with stars i really like, the one with moons, not so much

anyways ill probably continue this when i remember anything else, and maybe if i want to ramble on about more OC's i have, see you guys next episode!!

I picked this up expecting to like it, even expecting to like it a lot, because a friend has praised it highly and I trust his judgment.

Yet after finishing it -- and the reader is urged to complete it at its own pace -- I found it not exactly terrible, but not at all compelling, either. I had a good time with it, and I liked the first half even if the second half soured me on it. But the experience wasn't at all similar to my friend's. I guess we're both in the habit of liking books because our friends love them -- or because we like our friends -- which is a tendency I suspect may not always be a good idea.

This book is a slow, sprawling, rambling meditation on the theme of an alien civilization in which everybody has undergone some horrible experience or injury, with the result that they've become weird, twisted-brained people -- perhaps as a result of trauma, or genetic defects, or both -- who never recover their faculties of speech or cognition, and seem to have lost all their memories except for fragments from their childhood.

Each character, in a way, has to struggle against this. As a result of these things, they may have no memory of their home or family, or of the people who once were their friends. For them, the world of daily life and ordinary conversation is a terrifying, inchoate nightmare, and when they find it they may be terrified to begin with. They may even be unable to take any care of themselves -- like, say, cleaning their own apartment -- because their lives may have become so chaotic that they can't understand how to go through them with anything resembling coherence.

The language in this book, and the ideas it presents, are very different from what I usually like in fiction. This book isn't especially plot-driven (although there are plenty of moments that would work fine as such, just without a clear sense of a unified plot). The characters never really interact in a way that looks like "character-driven" -- although, because of the way the book's perspective is limited to the eyes of one character, it's hard not to feel like one is being given an inside view of a strange world, especially for the first part. Even at the end -- when everything has become very clear and the narration focuses on the main character's thoughts and memories -- one still has this impression.

What you have here is more an alien view of the human world -- as an outsider would be able to take in our world with only minimal distortion -- than an account of human life, which is what fiction usually is about. Like most of Tevis's other fiction, which includes his earlier, better-known novel (The Man In the High Castle), it seems to have more of an appeal as a work of science fiction than as a mainstream fiction story. Tevis has a talent for evoking strangeness -- not just the literal strangeness of Sputnik-like technology -- but of the sort of strangeness that can arise from some fundamental, metaphysical break, from a gap between what "we" can grasp and comprehend in our mundane, human way and the ultimate strangeness that exists, like another dimension, outside our ordinary experience.

It's not an alien world that I found unengaging (I liked it a lot) but rather a human world that just isn't really very engaging. The strange characters, the fractured-perspective alien view, and the lack of plot are not at all what a lot of writers these days are doing, and that's what makes this novel a bit of an anachronism. So I found myself in the odd position of wanting to enjoy a book despite its being very different from the kinds of things I normally read, because at least it was different in some interesting ways. But it wasn't something I'd want to read just for its novelty value -- except in the same way that a lot of modern art is about its novelty value, or that people talk about classic novels being about "social criticism," i.e. about what they can teach us about the human condition. (Tevis has written some other books, I guess, in which he has tried to give us these kinds of lessons -- about the pain and loneliness of growing older in contemporary America, for instance -- but there's something really wrong with doing it in this particular novel.)

This was SHOCKING and I have so many more questions. Also I’m still convinced somehow he is still pulling strings and trying to control Celaena’s life, but I have no proof.

I LOVE Nehemia so much and I just 😭😭😭 I just wanted Celaena to be happy.

And then it all came crashing down. And from this point on I COULDN'T put the book down. I read until I finished. In tears. I was sobbing.

My jaw dropped.

I was very shocked that Archer was actually involved. I want to know if that also means the other people she let live were actually traitors or if it was just Archer. Regardless, even though it was told to us from the beginning, I didn’t believe he was actually a rebel lol. Also, wasn’t too shocked that Celaena is fae, especially with how hidden she keeps her past. And the song she sung at Nehemias grave kind of gave her away- once Chaol found out what it was.

I laughed because HOW IRONIC and then I cried for a bit because he is going to have to give her up, and he isn’t going to give her up. Or this is what makes him despise her and there is no going back after this. But I don’t think he will tell anyone. I think he did just make the biggest mistake though by having her sent to the HOME of the Fae.

anyways, yeah. That was chaos. I don’t even know if it’s coherent but I am pressing that post button :)

WHAT’S THEIR GO-TO PICK UP LINE / FLIRTING TACTIC?

he really doesn’t flirt in the typical sense and his only workable tactic for picking anyone up beyond existing and hoping someone approaches him first is overly blunt and better-suited to one night stands. and much like the latter, if someone’s done the hard part for him, his responses are of a direct yes-or-no sort and don’t leave much room for interpretation. if he knows someone well, he will stay in their space, but that’s not so much about broadcasting intentions as it is about putting himself in a position to be touched.

CAN THEY DANCE?

absolutely not. if the dance is slow, he can probably be led. anything more than that and he would embarrass himself.

UNDERWEAR STYLE?

boxer briefs! it’s almost entirely based on functionality and comfort (that support, fam; that snugness).

CRAYONS, MARKERS, COLORED PENCILS, PAINT?

i would say paint. he’s not exactly an artist in practice. he will draw a stick figure and call it a day, but he’s fond of color and things that are aesthetically beautiful. i can’t see him painting anything that requires clean lines, so I’m thinking watercolors, and the subject would most likely be the sky, over and over again. no happy trees, just… happy sunrises. happy sunsets. he gives me urban art vibes, too, like spray paint and sidewalk chalk.

WHAT WAS THEIR CHILDHOOD STUFFED ANIMAL OF CHOICE?

young wes regularly ran away from home at night because his best friend moonlighted as a stuffed animal. i’ve never pictured him having stuffed animals before; if he did, it likely would have been a rabbit!

WHAT’S THEIR SLEEPING POSITION?

if he’s alone and somewhere comfortable, he sleeps mostly on his stomach. in canon, if he’s outdoors, he’s on his back and boomer is most likely pulling double-duty as a pillow. with a partner (or partners), he’s either on his back for maximum clingability — he’s not a clinger himself, though he likes to be on the receiving end with his arm wrapped around — or curled into them like a chaotic spoon (with his partner facing toward him or away at their equally chaotic leisure). regardless of the position, he likes to tuck his chin over their head or bury his face in their hair, because he is a sentimental bitch.

DO THEY SNORE?

for a blessing, no. apart from being overly warm, he’s a very tolerable sleeping partner.

WHAT DO THEY ACT LIKE WHEN DRUNK?

he’s a happy drunk — more talkative, more forward, more open, more apt to share stories and ideas, less existential angst, less pretenses, less clothes. his speech is also less coherent: he rambles, curses, interrupts himself, pauses or trails off, and repeats words. takes any and all dares. will send drunk texts and photos to exes and delete the messages the next day to maintain dignity denial.

SWEET, SOUR, SALTY, OR SAVORY?

of the ones listed, it’s salty, hands-down. he’s not fond of sweet things — just about anything beyond raw fruit is too cloying. absolutely will not eat cake unless the frosting is scraped off. he also likes bitter things, as evidenced by his love of whiskey and black coffee.

CAN THEY PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? IF SO, WHICH ONE(S)?

wes can play acoustic guitar but not beyond an intermediate level at best. he received one for his birthday when he was younger and learned to play then, but he left it behind when he peaced out of montana. by the time the events of the game roll around, he hasn’t played in 11+ years (although he did retrieve aforementioned gift guitar). he picks it up again, but he is rusty. the last song he played before he left and the first song he played after returning were both across the universe by the beatles.

WHAT WOULD THEIR FAVORITE BOOK BE?

watership down! this choice has everything to do with the hilarious plot parallels and nothing to do with my own love of the book and animated film, i swear.

WHAT IS THEIR GUILTY PLEASURE?

he enjoys long walks through the valley and blowing up cult property.

the truest answer to this isn’t fluffy; i’m sorry! wes has a weird relationship with guilt and shame in that he tries to avoid those feelings because he equates them with a.) denial of self and/or b.) denial of things to himself, neither of which he enjoys subscribing to… or so he says. truthfully, he tends to overindulge in certain things in order to deny himself others, for better or worse. sex was one. he used it to distance himself emotionally from his actual relationship ideal, which is far more committed than a lot of his history would suggest. he has no genuine desire for promiscuity; it was just a means to an end — a disastrous combination of him trying to convince himself that he didn’t need commitment in order to feel whole and him preparing himself for rejection of commitment from other people by allowing himself behavioral excuses for it, i.e. “if you are refusing to commit to me because of the things i do, then you’re not refusing to commit to me because of the things i am!” historically, that’s what it was. it’s still a “guilty pleasure” in the sense that he indulges in it from time to time for the sake of validation. he’d much rather have a committed partner, but he assumes his modus operandi mentioned above was a little too successful, and that he shot himself in the foot with it. otherwise, a lot of his current “guilty pleasures” (as well as personal tics) are just replacements for drug-related behaviors in the past. drinking and smoking (both varieties) are comparatively lighter “replacement” vices than what he’d gotten into before, and a lot of his hand- and mouth-focused habits are learned coping mechanisms for/distractions from old cravings. some of those things are genuinely healthy alternatives (as is the case with his penchant for fixing mechanical things), but others are just neutral, ingrained behaviors that don’t serve any functional purpose beyond comfort or satisfying a compulsion.

IF THEY GOT A NEW PET, WHAT WOULD THEY NAME IT?

he’s far more likely to rescue a pet and just keep the name that came with it, to be honest. if he had to name it himself, it would most likely be based on some sort of simple, observational association like a fat, orange cat named pumpkin. if his partners want something with a deeper meaning, they will have to do the naming themselves.

BEACH HOUSE, COZY SNOWY CABIN, TREE HOUSE IN A FOREST, OR DESERT PARADISE?

aesthetically, the desert paradise or the cozy cabin. the forest works, but the tree house is iffy. he’d be happy enough living in the beach house, but it doesn’t match his aesthetic.

WHAT WOULD THEIR FAVORITE BOARD GAME BE?

risk. chess, even though raf dominates every single time.

WHAT DO THEY SMELL LIKE?

typically, a mix of cedar and citrus because of the soap he uses, but it’s probably not strong enough to smell unless you’re right there. (are you right there? good for you!) situationally, he’ll smell like leather and/or cigarette smoke. maybe sweat and blood if you catch him on a bad (read: canon-typical) day.

WHAT’S THEIR FAVORITE SMELL?

pine, wood smoke, wildflowers, gasoline, and tobacco. over half of these are harmful to his health; someone, please help him.

IF THEY WERE DRUNK, WHAT WOULD THEY GET A TATTOO OF?

if he were apt to get a tattoo while under the influence, he’d have ended up with one already. so far, the only tattoo he’s gotten is an ouroboros around his right arm, just short of his wrist. he was, however, completely sober, which was quite the point — or part of it, anyway.

DESCRIBE THEIR LAUGH.

most frequently just a scoff. his actual laughter is rarer, understated — low and smooth — but it comes with bright eyes and a million dollar smile.

HOODIES, KNIT SWEATERS, WOOL COATS, OR JUST A BLANKET TO STAY WARM?

of the ones listed, just a blanket. his style is a little more utilitarian — pockets and protection. when the weather’s colder he wears either a cargo jacket or a fairly standard leather riding jacket, and both would have a long-sleeved henley underneath.

ARE THEY GOOD WITH THEIR HANDS? HOW DO THEY DEAL WITH HOUSEHOLD-TYPE MAINTENANCE?

very good! wonderfully good! he picked up a lot of it from his dad — more observation and osmosis than actual instruction — but he keeps up with it in spite of the association. everything since then has been trial and error, but he’s really handy and would happily do most household-type maintenance himself. wes wasn’t in a good place when he first came back home, and his bike was a restoration project to keep his hands and mind busy in a way that was healthy and productive. he’s very proud of it, and all the work that needs to be done for that, he does himself. there’s definitely a metaphor somewhere in there for fixing what’s broken rather than throwing it away, but don’t suggest that to him or he will draw the curtains shut and pretend he does not see. wes’s skill set also includes lockpicking, hotwiring cars, and other fun things of questionable origin.

Okay, so, about a month ago, my brain just conjured up probably the most random au possible: Legally Blonde Adam Banks/banksway au.

Believe me, it's as chaotic as it sounds, but lowkey, I'm kind of in love with it.

Adam never joins the Ducks because there aren't any Ducks to join. Bombay never had to do community service with District Five so there was no one to realise that Adam was on the wrong team all along. He continues to play for the Hawks and, eventually, the Eden Hall Warriors, never getting the chance to become the well-rounded individual we know him as because he's never known anything other than his rich privilege and the "win at all costs" mentality. He ends up going to college on a hockey scholarship and not straight to the NHL or the AHL (shocking, I know). While he's unsure of his major and where his life is heading, he finds solace in the fraternity he joins, which, by some sheer twist of fate, Jesse and Guy have also miraculously joined.

And his life is perfect for a while. He's the star player on yet another school's hockey team, all of his fraternity brothers adore him (though, it took a bit for Jesse to warm up to him), and his secret, not-really-official thing with his former teammate is going swimmingly. (Not to slander my boy, but I was picturing Larson for the role of Warner, purely because the alternative seems to be Rick Riley and that's kind of an unsettling image-- though, maybe that's the point?)

But then his secret boyfriend breaks up with him because, with his high aspirations in life, he needs to be "more serious." And dating Adam Banks, a guy in a stereotypical fraternity who only really knows hockey, in 2001 isn't exactly the white-picket-fence life he's looking for if he's going to be a politician.

And since this non-Duck Adam clearly doesn't have the braincells that canon Adam does, in his devastation, he decides it's a brilliant idea to prove that he is serious by applying to Harvard Law. His parents try to talk him out of it, since they want him to pursue his dreams of hockey, but being a lawyer is a respectable career so they can't exactly argue with him.

He gets accepted thanks to Jesse, Guy, and the rest of his fraternity helping him study for the LSAT and keeping him on track. He's trying his darndest when he gets to Harvard, but (despite his struggle not being as significant as Elle Woods'), not a lot of people take him seriously as an aspiring lawyer, considering him a meathead jock who only got in because of daddy's money.

And that's about the time he meets Linda, who he vaguely remembers from his time at Eden Hall. What he doesn't remember is her being so competitive, because she's deliberately beating him at every turn, just trying (and kind of succeeding) at making him look like a fool. To make matters worse, all of the sudden, she's engaged to his ex-boyfriend, who is very adamant about never telling anyone that he and Adam were more than friends (because, you know, early 2000s homophobia and such).

But things get a little brighter for Adam when he meets Charlie, an undergrad teacher's assistant who gives him all sorts of advice about surviving the school. He introduces him to Professor Bombay, who Charlie claims is the only reason he survived his first year and quickly becomes Adam's favourite teacher, and Charlie's childhood friend Connie, who aspires to be a state senator one day. Charlie's charismatic and even if he's not the most well-liked person at Harvard, Adam feels a weight lifted off his shoulders once he becomes friends with him and Connie. Things become a little easier.

Just before he and Charlie start getting really close, Adam meets Casey at a local diner on a day he's feeling particularly upset and alone, and the two start bonding almost immediately. (He bullshits his way into scaring an ex-husband of hers with legal repercussions he has no idea about and she basically adopts him in return.) It takes him an embarrassing amount of time to realise that it's not just a coincidence that Casey and Charlie share the same last name, which results in poor Adam feeling extremely embarrassed for not connecting the dots sooner while Charlie's having the time of his life teasing him for it. Eventually, when the dust of that settles, Charlie and Adam join forces to set Casey and Bombay up, their schemes borderline ridiculous at times, but they'rere not exactly failing.

And after realising he isn't the Warriors moron she thought he was for going on five years, Linda starts warming up to Adam, which is surprisingly nice? She figures out on her own that there used to be something between him and her fiancé, and is more understanding of Adam than she is mad. Linda actually spills to him the lengths Adam's ex had to go through to actually get into Harvard, aligning more with the rumours about Adam's acceptance being bought than having the aptitude for the law that Linda and Adam share. (This may be me saying Linda and Adam friendship rights, what of it-- /lh)

To make things all the better, Bombay chooses Adam, Linda, Connie, Charlie, and Adam's ex to be on his legal team for a murder case he's responsible for (and while he knows about Adam and Charlie's ploys to hook him up with Charlie's mom, they're his favourites, so he doesn't say anything).

And this is just so much better than anything he had before. After all the initial unpleasantness, Linda and Connie become some of the most genuine friends he's ever had. He misses Guy and Jesse, of course, and he'd never take them for granted, but back when he was with them at the fraternity, a part of him was still being as superficial as he had been in middle and high school. Being authentic for once in his life is liberating.

And Charlie's just about the most considerate person Adam's ever met. Adam doesn't even mind when Charlie teases him over his absurd and juvenile insults because he's just this source of light for Adam, supporting him and always pushing him to be the best version of himself. His ex hardly even exists when Charlie's around because his energy is just so contagious that Adam starts falling for him long before he even realises it. (And when Jesse and Guy come to visit, there's a moment where it all clicks and the four of them realise their history together, however brief. I strongly maintain that they'd be that Starkid meme: "Fucking Hawks? We hated you guys!" "We hated ourselves!" But it does make Adam realise how much better off he would've been if he had Charlie and his team when he was little instead of the Hawks, and it just further makes him understand that people like Larson and Rick Riley just aren't worth it.)

But there's also another revelation Adam goes through. Between helping Casey, his rigorous studies, and his position working with/for Bombay, something just clicks for Adam. He likes being able to help people, fighting for the good guys who may not have the resources they need to be properly defended. Practicing law calls to him in the same way hockey did; it's the feeling of knowing this is what he's meant to do. He still loves hockey, he always will, but it helps him finally grasp that there's a world for him outside of it; when hockey ends for him, there's something equally as rewarding that he can pursue, which was something he never thought he would have.

I haven't a single coherent thought about this au past that point except for these little inklings of an ending--

There's absolutely no SA scene like the movie had; Bombay's just Adam and Charlie's favourite teacher and those are his boys, so he's going to make sure they succeed as if his life depends on it.

With that said, Bombay believes in them both enough to let them finish the case because with their joined determination/stubbornness (and Adam's in with the defendant), Adam and Charlie are a force to be reckoned with and he knows it.

After a handful of comedic failures, they do end up succeeding at their attempts to set Casey and Bombay up, and they start living together sometime during the kids' Junior year :) (All I'm asking is for one (1) story with a Casey/Gordon endgame-- I just think they're neat--)

Linda dumps her fiancé (as she should) and goes on to live her best wlw life as a successful lawyer. (If I'm not mistaken, Linda's actress actually is a lawyer, which is a pretty cool fun fact!!)

Adam and Linda's ex gets the Warner ending because, man, screw that guy /lh (rip to Larson if this is him, I'm sure you'll get a nice endgame in some other universe, king)

Honorary mention for Connie, who was going long distance with Guy this entire time to everyone but Jesse's shock, and they get their Game Changers endgame of State Senator Connie Moreau and stay-at-home dad Guy Germaine with their seven -- sorry, three -- children :)

Adam's an absolute bundle of nerves after graduation, which definitely concerns Charlie. So, when he asks if he's okay, Adam starts nervously monologuing about their time together until he runs out of breath. He ends it by proposing to him, and Charlie smiles so surely at him when he says yes. They both become damn good public defenders and stay engaged until the point they can legally get married, but they're practically husbands long before that happens.

Also, if I did my math right (which I should’ve, it’s my entire basis for my Share Your Address series), the Ducks’ would have the same graduating class year as Elle Woods anyway (2004), which is pretty neat!

Hello, lovely! I haven't had an ask in ages, thank you so much. Would you believe someone else asked for the exact same combination of letters so I'll answer G here.

G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

When I started writing a few years ago, I used to write the story start to finish—just sit down and write the opening scene and then work my way through. That's not to say that I wouldn't add a few scenes retrospectively during edits, but the bulk was always written in a linear fashion.

Nowadays I am much more flexible, especially when it comes to long fics. I'm currently 40k into a multiverse fic and that has been written completely out of order. Most of that 40k is made up of unrelated scenes, all of which were burning away in my brain until I sat down and blasted through them. However, it got to a point where I was feeling daunted by it and unsure of how to bring it together, and @sweet-s0rr0w very sensibly told me that I should back and start writing it in from the start in order to wrestle it back into order. And that has proved very helpful advice indeed.

Now my task involves going back and working out what needs to go in between the scenes to make a coherent story, plus to actually write the narrative arc and plot-ify the thing up! It's fine I'm fine 😅 But I just went back and wrote the opening scene to the whole fic and it's so much stronger than it might otherwise have been, because I have such a firm idea of characterisation and of the whole mood of the fic.

Scrivener is extremely helpful for this sort of writing, by the way. Because each scene can be laid out and shuffled about in the corkboard, and I can add notes about references to check, timeline queries, plus any other little things that I need to follow up on. I think that as a dedicated pantser who doesn't like to over-plan (if I get too detailed in my planning process, it starts to feel too much like work for me) long fics can sometimes feels like Very Big Projects. (Especially for a new writer like me who is still figuring things out and learning - not that the learning ever stops, I'm sure). So something like Scrivener works well because it provides me with a framework for pantsing about in, without making me feel too constrained. I still have a chaotic rambling stream of consciousness gdoc where I shove all my scene ideas, snippets of dialogue, and little character notes, but then I use Scriv to put some manners on the writing 😂 (yes i write in comic sans don't @ me). It's a one-off paid subscription but I got mine half price for finishing Nano and I find it's good value for me.

Rosy (2018) ramble

It's well made, there's a consistent aesthetic that's very evocative, there's a lot of visual interest, the editing is (intentionally) a bit chaotic and disorientating without getting messy or hard to follow, the voyeuristic tone is pushed far enough to have a big impact without being overdone... I mean, solid film-making. A deliberate effect was certainly achieved. The pacing is pretty good. And with the exception of a couple moments from the lead that were either choices that didn't work for me or weren't quite full enough commitment on her part, the acting was impeccable. The guy who played Doug was absolutely perfect at being creepy and unhinged without ever playing creepy and unhinged. He felt extremely real for the most part. Johnny was lovely and understated and created an immediate sense of intrigue about James.

So it's a good film in all those ways. Watchable, interesting. My problem, as a viewer, is that I'm really struggling to understand what the point of the story was. What am I meant to take away from this? Is it drawing a comparison between Rosy and Doug and their wilfully delusional acts of desperation to find companionship? Perhaps that these are both self-destructive paths but her violence is turned inwards and his is turned outwards? The only sort of larger statement I can think of as a plausible reading for all the personal drama is that it's about exploitation, maybe? Rosy is being used and discarded by everyone around her and Doug's feeling of entitlement towards her is not that surprising considering all these other behaviours that are deemed acceptable by society?

Because there was a point where it felt like maybe the film was drawing a moral equivalence between James and Doug, maybe even coming out on Doug's side? I'd like to think that's a misdirect, part of the whole section where Rosy becomes more and more compliant, indulging his fantasy to try to get him to let his guard down. And we're left to wonder during this whether she's genuinely surrendering/losing her sense of agency or if she's just doing what it takes to survive. Of course you assume the latter by default, but the film picks away at your certainty. It plays it almost romantic sometimes, as if they are having genuinely sweet moments of connection, like maybe she's actually falling for him and his plan is working.

This, interspersed with scenes illustrating how detached from reality and increasingly dangerous Doug is that ride the line juussst enough that you're not totally sure whether you're being encouraged to sympathise with him or not.

And you think, when she finally plugs him with an axe handle, 'oh thank God, we're not going there, she's been completely conning him'. But not... really? Because while the ending is extremely ambiguous it does drop strong hints that this relationship is somewhat real and she has some complicated feelings towards Doug despite her continued attempts to escape. There's a constant tension between the audience and film, I think, where it's threatening to 'go there' by having Doug's plan genuinely work and him be right in the convictions he used to justify his kidnapping. It toys with the idea of romanticism in this situation and never commits or totally repudiates that; it wants you to remain in doubt about Rosy's emotional state.

If the intention there is to make us super uncomfortable and not sure what to expect or latch on to, mission accomplished, but this fails to culminate in some kind of coherent point for the climax. Instead, we shift to more standard psychological thriller tension for a few scenes, things seem straightforward, then to black comedy, but then back to weird romantic vibes. I don't know if this is like... a social comment or if it's just a bit half-baked.

But anyway, if it IS trying to equate James and Doug or draw some kind of moral comparison, I find that extremely fucked up. I don't know, though, because it keeps going back and forth on who these characters are. At first you think James is going to seduce her, he's flagged as bad news at their first meeting, but no. He doesn't. She takes full control of that situation immediately, she escalates everything. And knowing full well what his deal is, too. He treats her badly and is an asshole, but he can't be said to be taking advantage of her or misleading her. So if this is about exploitation...

And I'm unclear on the whole escort thing. Is the reveal that she is an escort and how in denial she is about her life or is the reveal that James always saw her that way or...? I'm not sure what was going on in that scene where he was filming her and asking her questions. I am sure it's a deliberate parallel that her relationship with James is also full of misdirects and murkiness until the final two flashbacks where it becomes clear that she's in love with him and has been trying to get a level of intimacy from him that he was always unprepared to give. Otherwise why tell the story out of chronological order, right? She threw herself at this despite his explicit warnings it would never be serious and the many red flags, and now she's heartbroken and lonely and no one even notices she's kidnapped because this tawdry affair was the closest thing she had to a real connection.

(Interesting that James does seem to care a lot about her, but just does not see her as an equal or a viable romantic partner. Maybe I'm being too generous to this character because he's aloof and sexy with an easily exposed streak of apparent vulnerability and I go for that, but you can almost read the breakup as him trying to do the decent thing by her. He knows she's wasting her time on him and she's going to be miserable when he continues to keep her at arms length. He's not a good enough person to treat her better, but he feels guilty enough to stop using her when he can see the toll it's taking?

I'm possibly being wildly generous. I just don't see how we're meant to take him as some kind of master pick-up artist when he's so up front with her about his baggage and seems so hesitant to follow through. If his reticence and... not shyness but something almost shy when confronted about his intentions was a play to lull her into a false sense of security, why does he remain reticent throughout their relationship and why is his last scene so tender? He's careful with her, he's not unfeeling, he just doesn't respect her. It's a nasty chauvinism but it's not the sociopathic entitlement Doug feels at all. Is the point that she chose this? She's so dysfunctional she chases someone who was very clear that he doesn't respect her and she thus puts herself in captivity??? Are we literalising paternalistic sexual attitudes?

Is there a symbolic reason we never see her kiss James but we do see a 'sweet' first kiss scene with Doug?? She gets more actual intimacy from the crazy dude who kidnapped her than the emotionally unavailable ex-boyfriend she loves?)

But anyway.

To have this ambiguity and suspense about whether Rosy is playing on Doug's delusions in order to escape or whether she's so damaged that she's becoming emotionally dependant on her kidnapper, we have to remain at a distance from her. We can't be inside her head. To me, that's the downfall of this movie. It's literally called 'Rosy', the art of filmmaking is employed very deftly to put us in her shoes while also forcing us to be one of the voyeurs always looking at her, you'd think the whole thing kind of hinges on this character... and we really know nothing about her. Her motivations and mental state are almost completely opaque. And like, why? why do I care? Not knowing makes it hard. If this is ultimately a character study about a damaged woman or ultimately about how her image is a cipher to be exploited by shitty men, those two things strike me as mutually exclusive.

The fact that I can't tell which it wants to be is just... it's an issue for me. I felt feelings but the ending leaves me wondering what I'm supposed to make of any of them. Why this, movie??
