i really do think dennis wanted to be a proper parent to brian jr. i think when he left for north dakota he wanted to try and stick it through for the rest of brian's life. before he decides to leave he's sitting in paddy's watching the gang dance around and do what they always do, and the thinks about his life. he realizes that this isn't really what he wants to do for the rest of his life. he wants change, he wants to settle down, he wants to have a family. he also thinks about how he was raised, the kind of father frank was. he thinks about everyone in the gang, their parents or absent parents, and he realizes that brian jr doesn't deserve that. ultimately i think the real reason why he returned so soon after was his fear of vulnerability and the lack of trust that he has in himself, as well as his codependency with the gang. in order to be a parent you need to be vulnerable, you need to be honest. i truly think that dennis does not believe that he can be a good father. i think he's too worried that frank sunk his claws in him too deep and he will end up hurting mandy and brian jr in the end. he's too scared to confront what is wrong with him and fix it so he goes back to philly. he goes back to what feels comfortable, what feels easy. and putting his mask back on is exactly that. dennis has lived the last twenty-something years of his life with the gang, and most importantly mac. yes he is close with the gang and codependent with them, but mac has been his roommate for that whole time. they've gone out to dinner every single month, shared a car, shared a home. mac takes care of him, peels his apples, gives him massages, makes sure he eats, make sure he sleeps, watches out for him. without mac what is he? i think another big reason why dennis came back was that need for mac. he couldn't imagine existing with out him and shit, he didn't want to exist without him. even if dennis refuses to admit it he enjoys mac's company and he cares about him. when dennis returned from north dakota he tried to jump back in like nothing was wrong and nothing happened. you can tell after he gets back from north dakota he is ... tense. more so than usual ( i will acknowledge that part of this is due to robs ideal version of 'dennis' as a character and enjoying the more 'creepy serial-killer' behavior. i however am going to ignore all of that and focus on the deeper implications ). he's pushing all those feelings away because he doesn't want to admit it. he is ... much more harsh towards mac and mac's affection after he returns from north dakota. i feel like he's lashing out on mac and projecting his anger with himself to what he views as the source of the anger. dennis would have a really hard time talking with mac about why he left and why he came back. i feel like he wouldn't. if ever asked about it he'd brush it off or push it away. i could however see him admitting to it eventually but to be honest i can't see that happening until way later. probably post season sixteen after everything that happened with johnny, more guilt that he feels for his shitty behavior and manipulation. i can see it all kind of compounding and coming out eventually, most likely when he's incredibly drunk.

I'm curious about what your opinion on dtamhd is?

I talked about it a bit when the episode first came out, but I'll summarize my thoughts for the new folk. This is all just my personal opinion/interpretation, feel free to disagree, etc etc

I really like DTAMHD! Dennis is my favorite boy and I enjoy being with him for 20 minutes and watching him bop around trying to keep his cool and be kind to people while he slowly loses his mind. I fuck very heavily with the idea that Dennis actually does try to be calm and kind most of the time, he just gets overwhelmed by his own emotions and lashes out because he has no healthy outlit or healthy coping mechanisms. And he refuses to accept help from others because he doesn't trust anyone but himself with his mind and body because growing up every adult in his life that we know of abused him in some way. So when he has a problem, like high blood pressure, he keeps it all inside and tries to deal with it himself, which just makes him more stressed and miserable. I really like all the little things in his fantasy that actually do highlight parts is his real life, like him having to be on Frank's family plan, forever tied to him and relying on him even as an adult, or him crying "nightmare nightmare please somebody help me". We love to see a man suffer on this blog. But that's the aspect of the episode people usually don't have a problem with. Let's get more controversial

My interpretation of the ending is that Dennis did not actually lower his own blood pressure, he's just so stuck in this fantasy version of his life where he has control and where things can't hurt him that he blocks out the negative information and replaces it with positive. I don't see it as a "win" for Dennis because I don't think he succeeded at all in actually changing anything. I think the fact that the gang's phone call at the end is the exact same one that's explicitly a fantasy is supposed to clue us in that this is fake too, the difference is Dennis isn't aware that it's still a fantasy because he's so wrapped up in his own idea of himself as someone who CAN lower his own blood pressure and someone who the gang needs and relies on. So he has these purposeful fantasies to help him cope, but those fantasies still bleed in to real life and color his perception of himself and the world even though he thinks to himself that he's in control of the fantasy. But much like how he can't actually control his physical health, he can't control his mental health either, and this constant fantasizing that he can do all these things has led him to see a distorted version of reality where he doesn't have to change or grow or learn. Which is kind of the core of the whole show if you think about it. I do agree completely with the criticism that Dennis actually having the ability to lower his own blood pressure is stupid, so I get hating the end if you see it as him returning to reality and being successful in his endeavors, but that's not how I see it, so it's not an issue for me.

I can also understand why people could see the heart eating scene as a serial killer Dennis thing and dislike it because of that, but that's not how I saw it at all. It's really goofy and cartoony and obviously not real when he rips the guy's heart out and eats it; it's not about killing someone (the guy doesn't even look hurt at all, he just stands there watching Dennis—I think a real murder fantasy would focus on the pain and dying but it’s not about that, it’s about defeating a metaphorical evil, not a literal man) it's about oversimplifying the world. There’s so many fun different ways you can interpret the CEO, like that he represents Dennis’ relationship with himself or with the world or with his parents, etc. I think if you detach yourself from the literal image and look at things in a more abstract, metaphorical way it makes the scene and the episode as a whole more enjoyable—but I understand that’s not something everyone is interested in doing.

That’s why it doesn’t just feel like a retelling of Glenn’s real life experience to me—I think there’s a lot of Dennis-specific ideas and systems (lol) throughout the episode that give it more symbolism and weight and makes it into a good (imo) narrative.

And I get why, if you’re the type of person who feels a Sunny season should end with a story about the entire gang, or about the gang helping one of them do something big, or something similar, DTAMHD would be disappointing, but I personally have no expectations for what a Sunny finale “should” be, so I wasn’t bothered by the fact that Dennis never opened up to anyone or had any real growth. I was just along for the ride.

I really enjoy the fact that the episode has a lot you can read into and a lot that’s open to interpretation, but that’s also the exact reason different people came away with such different views of the episode. I love when Sunny takes risks and makes unique episodes like this. And I like watching Glenn Howerton smear blood all over his mouth

Welcome to the pain of being a long time comic reader, my friend.

I've said a few times that I gave up on Marvel with Civil War, but what made me give up on mainstream comics as a whole was twofold. One, I hated the New 52 reboot. It ripped everything up everything I liked about DC and replaced it with cheap knockoffs and diversity hires. But after Rebirth, I started to soften a bit on DC. I read a few of the Scott Snyder Batman comics and didn't hate them. But the thing that really intrigued me was Peter Tomasi's Super Sons. I discovered it late into the run through image sets and meta a mutual from my old, non-politcs blog posted and it looked like a lot of fun. I heard the book was ending and I decided to wait until it was done to start reading it properly, so I could have a nice contained story to read and maybe use as a jumping on point to dip my toes back into DC full time. Maybe I'd even finally get into Superman, which I've tried a few times over the years, but he'd never really caught on with me the way Batman did.

Then I heard what Bendis did to Jon Kent, and I realized there was no point in ever getting invested in any of the Big Two ever again. Anything you like will inevitably be changed, and changed in a big, negative way. Editorial mandates and writers with a grudge against a character will always find a way to mess up anything that manages to somehow be good. Mainstream comics is a fully compromised art form. The days of Denny O'Neil, Chuck Dixon, Greg Rucka, Chris Claremont and the like were well and truly dead. The days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby seem like a fever dream, because how could comics ever actually be that good?

Honestly, the best thing that could happen to our favorite characters is entering the public domain. The horrible takes will multiply, but there will at least be a non-zero chance of seeing a long running story with those characters done right for the first time in years, if not decades.

Until then, if that ever happens, we either reread the books we used to love and ignore the rest, or we try to find new voices outside of mainstream comics. For the latter, I can't recommend Eric July's Rippaverse enough. They even have Chuck Dixon writing for them now, and his first book, Alphacore, was great.

honestly if mac and dennis could be responsible pet owners (theyll never be.) i think theyd LOVE having a snake. i know theyd go for a ball python because theyre more stereotypically "snake" than some other pet trade species, but frankly i think theyd do best with a hognose. theyre pretty social (with humans. dont keep hognoses together in a tank) idiots with huge attitude and they look god damn adorable. hognoses would also be great for them because they tend to be more food motivated! its also good for snakes to just take them out and like. set them on your bed n just chill or talk with em for an hour or so. thatd be great for mac.

i personally think that mac will only hook up with you as a fellow man if you a) can pass as older than him or b) look like dennis. yeag i think he, consciously or not, goes for people that have similar traits to dennis, physically or personality wise. if dennis let himself accept that he cares a bit too much about who mac is dating, that little fact would single-handedly make macdennis canon. dennis would tell mac to just date him if he wanted to date him so badly

not entirely a headcanon but i imagine almost all of the gang besides maybe frank has methods for getting dennis to regulate his diet a bit more instead of eating like 1 meal a day. i think mac can get dennis to eat or drink just about anything by just giving it to him in conversation. he'll just let dennis talk his ear off and continually hand him chips or fruit or even drinks or nearly any drug at all. having a small bite or drink or hit during conversation is such a reinforced habit that its natural to the both of them now.

i think dee does it by purposefully playing into her status of being "below" dennis. she'll complain about being too weak to open a peanut shell or something and he'll snatch it and do it to prove hes better and out of habit maybe has a little bite. though i imagine if theyre inebriated in any way its as easy as genuinely just feeding it to him. dennis will never admit it, because he hates his sister, but he trusts her.

joyce i think can get dennis to eat just by getting alone with him. she provides a bubble of decompression and a lack of worry for him. its also insanely easy for her to just offer dennis a huff of whatever inhalant shes been having fun with that day and i imagine that makes things easier as well

i think you could pretty easily get mac into nerd shit. just have some pretty boy be a little nerdy. get him to watch star trek itd be life changing for him even if i think a good amount of it would fly over his head at times. ttrpgs and roleplaying in general i think would be big for him

Alright, now for the rambling. Series 4 is one of the rare occasions where I knew most of the cast as I was familiar with Joe Lycett, Lolly Adefope, Noel Fielding and Hugh Dennis to some extent, and over the course I've come to cherish them all (and Mel of course too). That being said, this is probably the only series where I take genuine umbrige with Greg's scoring. Most series I don't care who wins. I'm just here to be entertained and as I usually like all competitors, I don't care who wins. This time around, however, I think Noel didn't deserve the win. Who should have won in his stead? I don't know. If the scoring would have felt less favourable towards Noel, I wouldn't have minded him winning, but as it is, I do mind. I also think that Greg came down a bit harsh on Lolly a fair few times and Hugh. This series was just so strangely scored and I don't know why. But aside from the points - as I said, I don't usually care much for them anyway - I like this series. Everyone's a blast to watch. Hugh with his knives, Lolly with her naïvité, Mel with her uncorruptible positivity, Joe who becomes more and more irritated but otherwise is just adorable, and Noel's weird creativity. It's fun. I'm here for it! This time around I didn't have a competitor I liked less than the rest, and I'm glad they paired Mel and Hugh for the team tasks.

And I like to emphasise that I don't hate Noel. Usually I find him quite entertaining, and this is the only reason series 4 isn't my favourite (not counting from series 5 onwards 'cos we're not there yet, although I've watched them all). Individually, I liked all competitors, they're simply fun. Greg and Alex are great, and the tasks are a treat - although rather on the artsy side. Only because I consider Greg's scoring unfair do I not love this series as much as series 1, for example.

Addendum: When I started drafting this post in my notes, there was a long rant about the scoring - believe it or not - and I cut it down considerably, but I just wanted to give you guys an example of what I mean when I say, I find it unfair: A lot of tasks in this series are art-based and Noel is a very talented artist, not denying that, but often these tasks weren't about 'who can paint the best painting', but 'who fulfils the set parameters'. In episode 1, they're meant to draw a caricature of the person sat behind the curtain. Noel's drawing looks great, though it's not really a caricature, is it? Even Hugh's disaster meets the required parameters better (and he used colours too) than Noel's in my opinion. And every episode has one of these moments. Just to name another one: The prize task in episode 8 where they had to bring in the most cash. Greg decides to award points based on value in pound sterling. Mel's Monopoly money doesn't count extra, but Noel's made-up currency gets third place? How's that justified? And I know that a huge part of what makes Taskmaster Taskmaster is the arbitrary scoring - that Greg basically has the last word - but in other series he manages to make it seem fair nevertheless. Anyway, enough of that. I'm stoked to return to series 5!

No one hates serial killer Dennis more than me or serial killer anyone in the gang, my first og big post on this blog was an ultimate anti-serial killer dennis post, so I'm not going in that direction here, but hear me out, this isn't a real theory of anything I think will happen, but the whole situation escalating with Charlie and Uncle Jack here, they're building up to something, and many have already speculated or desired that Jack dies or Charlie gets to kill Jack, well, what if he does, whether accidentally or on purpose (rightfully so), but Dennis, Dennis takes the fall to protect him from the fallout because everyone expects this kind of thing of Dennis anyway, they've fallen for the mask and no matter how hard he tries to take it off, they just can't see the real him, they don't know him, so what's left for him to lose, he becomes the face of the "killer" they think he is, and that itself, being a selfless act, becomes the thing to finally help remove the mask and let them see he's not a killer.
