So, if you asked to write your top 5 fav from JJK and HxH, what genre will you put them (or you agree that they should be in shounen)....

HxH top 5+:

Gon - he fits battle shounen well but he's also do great in a sports show. Any type of adventure story would suit him, it wouldn't need to be fighting related, he's so curious. And also detective stories, he's very perceptive. But also psychological horror or thriller where he has to face the darker parts of his personality. And high fantasy, Gon's obviously an elf or a hobbit or like a cross between them.

Killua - he would do well in some slow burn romance, period probably where a lot is unspoken. He could also do well as an eccentric detective, genius with poor people skills but actually very observant and empathetic on the inside XD

Alluka (and Nanika)- shoujo, possibly a magical girl one but with slightly darker undertones. You know, both cute and creepy. Or like darker, maybe supernatural or horror yuri drama. Nanika would either be her twin in this, or the dark magical being connected to her like she is in hxh. And obviously gothic horror.

Canary - she would also make a great magical girl, but also any kind of story of reluctant heroine would suit her - she serves the Zoldycks out of necessity but she also grew very emotionally invested in that. Also yuri drama would suit her very well. And considering how she scammed Amane in the Election arc I feel like some kind of story where she uses her wits to achieve her goals.

Leorio - apart from the obvious aka any medical drama, any scenario where it's him against the system. Probably cyber punk would suit him well, because of how such reality would clash with his values. But also rom com, he'd be kinda bad at it and it'd be funny.

JJK to 5:

Yuuji - I mean he's a shoujo manga heroine, I stand by it wholeheartedly. He's be good in slice of life but also in something very dramatic and painful. And he'd be perfect for romance where he's the clueless one and others pursue him, maybe even harem anime. Also some kind of story where he has a service job and deals with it, kinda heavy but funny story, probably heart warming in the end. Also musicals to utilise his singing skills and charisma.

Nobara - any story where she's the underdog climbing to the top or where she has assert herself against the world. She'd be great in slice of life too, especially comedy. And stuff with yuri on the side though no romance for her as the main plot, like she's more about her goals. And anything where she's ride or die, can be as tragic as Thelma and Luise but also a lighter play on that trope.

Kenjaku - comedy, obviously. Horror, duh. But also spy thrillers, both as the main character, kinda an anti hero, or the villain. And like any historical drama that is intrigue and/or creepiness heavy. And cyber punk with the body hopping. And obviously any story about them being an overbearing parent with a difficult relationship with their kids, like heavy family drama. Kenny's got range.

Sukuna - porn. Any story where he's the ruthless ruler or contender to power - period drama, modern, sf, crime. Any story where he's a cannibalistic serial killer, especially styled after true crime where he'd have groupies. Reality tv where he's the hated judge. But also some heavy drama where he has to deal with societal rejection and/or has to face the personal consequences of the way he is, like the thing Gege is denying him rn. Or a more silly and topey high school drama version of that like a bully getting his comeuppance and rethinking his life, something teen oriented.

Yorozu - so like mad scientist anything for her. But also Crazy Ex Girlfriend kinda thing where she slowly works through her issues and gets over seeking validation in shitty men. Also like Sex and the City but like if Samantha was the main character (as she should've been). Like a reverse rom com. She'd also do well in musicals and super hero stories before the started to strive for being serious, because she's over the top.

Regarding the ask about female VA’s doing little boy’s voice, there a few candidates I can think of:

Colleen O’Shaugnessey- She recently played Jean in FE Engage which is one of the very first time IS bought a female VA to voice a little boy character.

Erica Mendez- She is one of the very few VA’s to pull it off and she’s widely known to play Gon from Hunter x Hunter.

Cristina Vee- Like with Mendez, she can also pulled that voice off too as well. And she’s also played Killua from Hunter x Hunter along with Bennet and Xingqiu from Genshin Impact (in the last ask regarding Cristina)

Laura Stahl- Played many young boy characters with Iruma (Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun) and Ray from The Promised Neverland being one of the most recognizable one. She had that range and voice quality to pull it off like Veronica Taylor does.

Jeannie Tirado- Also played young boy characters like Norman from The Promised Neverland. She can also pull off the range as well.

Brina Palenica- One of Brian’s most famous roles is playing Ciel from Black Butler and Chopper from One Piece. Haven’t heard her voice for these two but I think she can help voice for a young boy character.

Dawn M. Bennett- Also played young boy characters at some point in time so she could also work as well.

These are the ones I can think of at the moment but these are the lists of candidates that I can think of that can pull off the range of voicing little boy characters. (Sorry if the list got too long)

I wouldn’t say Jean was the first time, technically there’s M!Kana. But he is one of the few actually voiced by a girl. And I trust Colleen, given her amazing performance as Tails.

Sad thing is, unless we get new OCs that are young boys, we probably won’t see these actresses getting to play any young boy characters, since the baby banners are always played by their OG actors no matter what (Mia being an exception). I totally agree that fuck toxic masculinity. It’s so fucking toxic and men should be allowed to show emotions, affection and care openly without fearing for repercussions. And having portrayals of friendships where the characters are not afraid of sharing their love with the other in a totally platonic way is amazing.

However. 

There’s been countless representations of this type of relationship in media over the years. In every media, not only anime. I always cite the same example, but take Naruto who is the example that speaks to me the most. (ive never seen it so dont flame me if i say dumb shit). But from my understanding, Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship was a full on middle finger in the face of toxic masculinity. They shared a deep bond, pretty much like Killua and Gon’s. I know a lot of people shipped them because their relationship was borderline homoerotic, but in the end it was just a beautiful representation of a very deep platonic friendship. 

And when you’re queer, it’s heartbreaking. Because you’ve been projecting this entire time, for the work to tease you, to literally bait you into showing you inherent queer behavior only for it to say “haha lol jk” at the end is fucking rough. Especially when you’re young and questioning your sexuality, looking at relationships between two best friends and thinking “oh, this feels like I feel when I’m with my best friend, is this romantic love?” and then the work saying nope haha its purely platonic ! its rough. trust me. 

The community doesn’t have a lot of positive, healthy queer relationships to identify with. Especially in anime. Most queer relationships are labeled under the special genres “shounen ai” and “yuri” (both of these categories painting queer relationships in the worst possible ways ever btw, but thats a whole other subject). But it’s fucking sad. Because we deserve to see queer representation in works that are not classified as those genre. We shouldn’t have to dig into a particular genre to identify with characters : there should be queer representation no matter the genre, whether it be a shoujo, a seinen, or for example, a shounen battle manga.

And that’s why HxH is so important to the queer community. Because it displays just that. That you can have good queer representation in non shounen-ai genres. That queer relationships are normal and should not have to be classified under a certain category. 

A lot of queer people identify and recognize HxH as queer work, because of a few reasons. Togashi has always been interested in queer representation, having put queer characters in every single one of his works. There was a trans girl in YYH, a trans man in Level E, Alluka in HxH. Togashi also wrote several gay characters in both of these works. I always repeat myself on this, but Togashi also wanted to write a gay sports manga, but was turned down. His favorite manga when he was younger was a shounen-ai. So yes, Togashi has deep history and is very involved in queer representation.

Togashi is also very fucking smart. Just look at all the metas people are producing every day about hxh and understand how much effort togashi has put into his work : he’s a smart man, who makes conscious choices about everything he puts in his manga. So when you see the way he portrayed Killua and Gon’s relationship, and for now most importantly Killua, you know it’s not accidental. Togashi has put SO much subtext in his work about Killua in general, from his birthday being Tanabata to him wanting to commit a lovers’ suicide with Gon, and Togashi KNOWS how it comes across, he’s not dumb. He knows what those things mean, he knows that a shinjuu is a heavily connotated word, and that people, ESPECIALLY JAPANESE PEOPLE who have the cultural context, are gonna think “oh, maybe Killua is gay”. Because that subtext is intentional. And there’s a lot of it. If you haven’t read my post on the subtext of HxH, I invite you to do so because there’s a LOT of it. 

In short, HxH has the subtext, has the potential and has the one author that is not afraid of putting queer stuff in his work. That’s why Killugon is so important to the community, and that’s why a lot of people, especially queer folks, insist on the romantic reading of their relationship. 

Because it’s extremely important to queer people. Positive representation of queer relationships in anime is hard to come by, ESPECIALLY in the shounen genre. And sadly, because our society is drowning in deep internalized homophobia, people easily dismiss queer behavior in media as platonic actions.

How many times have I seen people assess that two people of opposite genders in an anime are in love only because they looked at each other once (take Ponzu and Pokkle for example). Or because they held hands. Our society is so quick to romanticize interactions between two people of different genders, but fail to do the same when it’s same-gender pairings. 

Straight people hand holding, kissing, blushing around each other, admitting their love out loud, looking at each other’s eyes deeply are immediately categorized as in love. But when it’s people of the same gender, people immediately say “it can be platonic”. And whether you’re aware of it or not, that’s internalized homophobia.

That’s why it’s infuriating to see people dismiss the subtext that Togashi has tried SO HARD to plant throughout his story. Because it’s there, and if Killua was a girl, there’d be way less people opposed to a romantic reading of their relationship. Because it’d be widely accepted that Togashi is writing them as a developing couple, no questions asked. 

Which brings me to my final point (promise, I’ll stop ranting after this). Sadly, the voices of the people who assert a platonic reading of a relationship are often louder than the voices of queer people who identify with the work. When confronted with an ambiguous relationship between a same-gender pairing, people unconsciously tend to choose a platonic reading of the relationship. Which is harmful to the queer community, because the voices of the queer people who identify with the work are silenced. 

In conclusion, yes, representations of deep platonic friendships without toxic masculinity are good, and very much encouraged. We’ve just had a shitton of those over the years, and queer people are craving for proper representation. Togashi is deeply invested in positive queer representation, has planted a lot of conscious subtext in HxH, and he’s the one author that would NOT queerbait. So people being insistent that Killua is pretty much canonically gay, and that it’s likely that Killugon will be a romantic pairing is not for the sake of mindless shipping. It’s because there are a lot of reasons to believe that this is Togashi’s intention.

And like I said, sadly, people insisting on a platonic reading of their relationship is unintentionally harmful to the queer community, because people are so quick to dismiss elements that make queer people identify with the work as platonic behavior, dismissing queer people as “wishful shippers”. 

There are plenty of reasons to believe that HxH is queer work, and while platonic readings of killugon’s relationship are valid, it sucks that it’s become overbearing in the anime community, to the point where outside of tumblr, people literally bully you for thinking that there’s a possibility Killua might be gay and in love with Gon. (trust me, i’ve faced a lot of people saying that it’s disgusting to label killua as gay)

So yes ! Killugon can be read as platonic. The queer community is just very adamant about people not dismissing Togashi’s subtext because HxH is the healthy, positive representation we need. It’s a beautiful piece of work that has the full potential (and who is most likely headed this way) to display a healthy, loving, positive canon gay relationship between two of its main characters. 

Showing that a shounen battle manga can feature a canon gay relationship, showing that you can be young and gay and what you thought was best friend behavior was maybe romantic and that it’s okay because feelings change and are hard to figure out especially when you’re young and queer !! 

And most importantly showing that unlike every portrayal of deep male best friends relationships in shounen anime that turn out to be painted as purely platonic, sometimes behaviors that queer people identify with ARE queer behavior, and not just platonic love, but romantic, homosexual love.

Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

I find it more depressing than funny, tbh.

I haven't read/seen much BL recently so I'm not sure what the genre looks like but if I remember correctly, you could also find there slow, melodramatic romance.

But the strong gay vibes a lot of the shounen manga exhibit has a lot to do with patriarchy and censorship.

Popular shounen tends to be not that much about what all teen boys are interested in but what they should be interested in, what's acceptable for them to be interested in. It's societal gender expectations reinforced by peer pressure. Japan isn't great on the queer topics due to its history, especially when it comes to men. Not because they are more accepting of wlw, it's just women are societaly more invisible and their interests were/are? considered more frivolous. They can have homosexuality in their low brow media, because in a patriarchal society the media directed at women is by default kinda trashy.

And I'm talking here about women's media because BL and it's cousins are stereotypically female oriented categories, though it's not like men don't read/write it. There's manga that is by gay men for gay men, I forgot the name of it, but what I've seen it, it's more Tom of Finland in vibe than Yuri on Ice. (Though I've seen just a few titles and it's surely far more than just that)

That's why there will be plenty of homophobia in media directed at teen boys. Like there's a whole type of character in shounen that feeds into predatory homosexual stereotypes, like Hisoka from HxH, for example.

HxH is a very interesting example here because Togashi has hinted at times that he wanted to include a gay romance in HxH, and the phrasing he uses between Gon and Killua is quite openly romantic in nature @/https://www.tumblr.com/i-heart-hxh has a lot of meta about it, if you're interested.

In shounen historically two things converged, the homophobia and the ugh, romance is for girls, yuk! So we can't really have het romance in a normal way, because girls have cooties and romance is for girls, but we're also homophobic so we can't have gay characters.

But we also want drama and deep connections and cool lines, so like it all gets very homoerotic but the epilogue will make them straight.

It's getting better slowly, like gradually shounen will have female characters that do stuff, and there will be canon gay characters. Maybe there will even be romance in the major titles, though not in this "Big There", I'm afraid. And no I don't consider whatever the fuck predatory shit is happening in CSM as romance. JJK kinda has one relationship, Kirara and Hakari, but they aren't even officially confirmed despite everyone knowing what they are XD. There was also kinda Chousou/Yuki budding but well mum would not have it, apparently. Hell's Paradise has an established relationship with a bit of romantic flashbacks, but Kittymaru is kinda ace, so it's slightly too queer and not enough a non cringe het romance shounen so desperately needs (Hell's Paradise also has canon queer characters, Kaku took full advantage of Jump+ and it's to be commended).

The fandom kind of ruined Yurio for me, I’m     trying to like him again and find his canon character I loved under the     pile of shit, which is his fanon interpretation.

Hisoka maybe? Well, that’s bullshit I still love     him, even though he is a maniac and killed my baby. But Kaito changed so     much, I don’t like it.

Shouto. I was sooooo in love with him, his story,     his character and everything, but again, fandom happened, he became the     soft baby boy everyone wants to protect and it’s so boring I can’t even. I     still like how he is in the manga, so I think I’ll try to focus on that     and forget the fanon.

A Character You Didn’t Like At First But Do Now:

Chris. I just. Yeah.

Shalnark. He is everything.

Endeavor. I thought Horikoshi will just kill him     or something to ‘solve’ the problem, but the fact that he actually wants     to show, that people can change is amazing.

Three OTPs: 

Victor/Yuuri because c’mon you can’t sit with us     if you don’t ship this, and I ship Seung-Gil/JJ so I can’t sit with     anybody in this fandom and Leo/Guang-Hong.

Aged up Killua/Gon is my jam, Leorio/Kurapika is     kind of something that happens when you’re not looking and I ship     Hisoka/Illumi too but seriously, who doesn’t?

Shouto/Katsuki, because reasons, Endeavor/All     Might because I’m weak and Suneater/Hawks because I’m obviously an idiot.
