mid-year book freak out tag

years go by... i still read books...

1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2023? moby dick! i totally did not expect to like this dusty tome so much but it was just too perfect a mix of tropy revenge tale, sea adventure mockumentary, and making stuff up and putting it into categories that caused pleasant vibrations in my neurodivergent brain. i have watched so many whale documentaries after reading this, you guys have no idea🐳

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2023? flamefall is the second book in the aurelian cycle and it’s the best sequel i’ve read so far this year. the addition of a slow burn mm master/servant story line improved things considerably, not to mention that it was my favorite character’s time to shine. this series is sooo good, please read it guys you won’t regret it i swear🙏

(ngl i’m a bit annoyed that fourth wing, this fireborne sjm-ified, is doing numbers out there and meanwhile there’s no fandom for the aurelian cycle to speak of😒)

also i simply have to mention defekt, book two of litenverse. i found the first book quite boring despite it’s shortness but the sequel has a sad lil guy🥺. highly recommend for fans of black mirror, severance or the murderbot diaries. you don’t reeeally need to read book one btw, i think you can just read the description and then jump straight to the good stuff

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? i want to read witch king but i keep putting it off cause everything i hear about it sounds suspiciously like *american author does mdzs* and idk how i feel about that😬

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2023? i’m looking forward to system collapse the most bc it’s gonna be set chronologically after network effect and it’s longer than the other murderbot novellas too. very excited to see murderbot and art bicker again hehe

5. Biggest Disappointment? ig it’s the warrior’s apprentice😬 many people recced the vorkosigan saga to me as “the lymond chronicles in space” but based just on this first(-ish) book i have to say miles is uhhh,, not lymond😐 lymond’s key traits are that he’s queer and a cunt and baby miles is simply not that (yet). of all the other books that people mentioned on my overcompetent scheming bastard post this was the last one i hadn’t read so i was a bit disappointed that it didn’t pull me in like the lymond chronicles. however, of all the books mentioned there it’s also the only series i can see myself continuing any time soon so. it wasn’t all too bad ig🤷‍♀️

i was also somewhat disappointed by assassin’s apprentice but i will make myself push through the realm of the elderlings just bc i’m so intrigued by the fool👀

6. Biggest Surprise? apart from the life changing experience that was moby dick i gotta admit i didn’t expect to like the goblin emperor, what with it being one of those cozy hopepunk fantasies where people are nice and decent to each other🙄 but it really did grow on me by the end, it indeed made me feel cozy and soothed. now i wanna try katherine addison’s older darker stuff that was apparently so controversial she had to change her pen name or smth👀🤭  

7. Favorite New Author? so i read another book by christopher rice and can confirm that he’s now one of my favorite authors. the man’s early 2000s gay thrillers are very melodramatic and refreshingly juicy - you can really tell they were published in ye olden pre-twitter times

8. Newest Favorite Character? cyrano savinien hercule de bergerac. after just reading that first act where he monologues about his nose for three pages straight and then spends all the money he has to hijack a theater and cause a scene by duelling a guy on stage while insulting him in ballad form i thought wow but this is one of my sexy fucked up guys who like to swish their swords and run their mouths! please enter the mind rotation chamber, monsieur🙌

9. Newest Fictional Crush? power sur eater🐉 you guys are sleeping on the aurelian cycle and on the Glory and Tragedy of My Boy who has done nothing wrong ever in his life and i love him😭 seriously, if you’d like to watch a character like draco malfoy go through jaime lannister��s arc you gotta read this series

💕Best Ship💕 the relationship of griff and delo in the aurelian cycle was SO dramatic and full of rawest scenes! kinda reminded me of captive prince at times, bc of the whole master/servant element. and the ending? “i will grow old in love, let them sing of others”?? i am Emotion🥺

10. Book That Made You Cry? furysong made me cry my eyes out like every ending to a ya series should. have i mentioned you should read the aurelian cycle btw? but also both moby dick and cyrano de bergerac made me laugh AND cry as only really good books do. there’s a part in moby dick about seeing whales in mountains and stars that made me remember i am a human being and was a small and happy human being once - like that scene in ratatouille when anton ego tastes ratatouille and the nostalgic memories hit him and he becomes not evil anymore. that was nice but i cried like a little bitch😭

11. Book That Made You Happy? re-reading twittering birds never fly without skipping all the yakuza plot scenes made me realize how hilarious this manga actually is! yashiro can obviously crack a joke but this time i discovered the comic relief goldmine that is nanahara

Favorite Book Adaptation You Saw This Year? i have a LOT of criticisms about martin crimp’s “free adaptation” of cyrano de bergerac but ngl it was fun to watch the play come to life on stage (even tho there were no swords, a crime😒) and even more fun to watch christian kiss cyrano on the mouth like god intended

Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year? so this year i actually started reviewing stuff on goodreads for the first time and it’s quite fun and really useful for refreshing your memory on what you thought of a book. i try to go for short and witty over in depth and analytical so i suppose the best examples of the reviews i have written so far would be the ones of moby dick and the goblin emperor

Most Beautiful Cover? the og red cover of fireborne slaps! the revolutionary red? the minimalist black dragon? the main characters’ profiles formed by its wings?? talented brilliant show stopping. idk who made the decision to redesign the covers after the first book but that decision was utterly stupid🤨

What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? i need to finish some series (the diviners, the dreamhealers, the broken earth), then like i said i want to read witch king and also i’m doing the classics challenge again so i have to at least finish reading roxelana and re-read the picture of dorian gray (the uncensored edition👀). i have looked up my old mid year tags and was pleased to discover that i since have managed to read all the books mentioned there EXCEPT for you love me which has been a staple in my reading plans since 2021 so i’m gonna put it on this list again to honor the tradition lmao

overall i have to say my reading year is going well but i still miss the exhilaration of discovering new books worth obsessing over like it kept happening in 2019-2021 with the secret history, captive prince, all for the game, mdzs and lymond. last year i used to think i wasn’t doing a good job of finding books like this but now i’m starting to suspect that i have actually read ALL the good books and there aren’t any left :( but that’s absurd right?? or isn’t it?! anyways tell me what you’ve been reading so that i can maybe get intrigued by something and prove myself wrong on this🙏📚

Hey. I know that depression is a bitch and its voice is unbearably loud. I can't imagine what must have caused it to be so strong, although I relate to the feeling of worthlessness. I just wanted to tell you that, even though we don't speak very often, I consider you a friend. You *are* funny and I smile when I see you on my dash or in the tags. I also appreciate that you go out of your way to comment on my fics, the tags you left on my last one made me so very happy because you understood exactly what I was going for :) and yeah I'm also glad that we can talk about badwrong things without one judging the other! Speaking only for myself, it helps a lot with my insecurity.

Hey hello I took a little sleep and uhhh idk I’m at least calm now… I can’t say I’m doing alright. I had a really bad breakdown in regard to my art in early to mid October and I’m just now getting back to where I was. And then recently I had my entire perspective of life and death changed and like it was a good change but that’s still… A lot to deal with.

Unfortunately my lack of motivation or whatever I’m experiencing has been an ongoing issue for a very very long time and I’m not sure what to do about it or what’s causing it… I think a lot of issues piling on top of each other. Depression, anxiety, executive dysfunction, perfectionist mindset… Apparently anemia can be contributing to this too??? Yeahhh btw I have chronic anemia <3 Plus some other issues that I’m not comfortable throwing out onto a public tumblr post

Oh yeah I was listening to this album again while sewing I think. Been really enjoying putting on Seether albums while I do art stuff. I actually only started listening to them properly this year soley bc i saw their name on a friend's fursona refsheet and was like 'oh i should listen to them more' and now i do :)

Currently watching: Two things mainly;

I'm currently binging and trying to get up to date on Viva La Dirt League's NPC D&D campaign, the vldl crew are friends of my work and the DM for this games (Rob Hartley) dm'd the game that Aestereoth first debuted in. But also this series is literally the only dnd series I can watch/stomach. It isnt just 4hr podcasts every week. They're nice snippy 30 min episodes with cutaways to them acting out the scenes they played. It's SO FUNNY and i love these guys a lot :3 can't wait to catch up so i can draw them finally haha

Secondly is my partner and I are watching thru all of Card Captor Sakura!! :D They watched the localised version as a kid so it's important to them but they hadn't seen the unedited japanese version ever so we get to watch it for the first time together. It's just so cute and wholesome and silly and jkahsdkjahd good comfy anime. Fucked up in places like all good anime should be but like overall... 10/10 snuggle anime.

New look, same old blog!

welcome to a wholly improved skysometric.co! after years of dreams, sketches, redesigns, code, and slamming my head against the wall, i've finally fulfilled my dream of having a blog that matches my design language. i'm so excited to put it to good use as the front page for my creativity and journaling 💖

the blog's still based on tumblr, using a new custom theme. in truth, it's just a heavy edit of the default theme... and quite a mess of one, at that! but hey, it looks and works great, and isn't that all that counts in the end?

About the redesign

on the left menu are links to my main sites, and core tumblr links like the askbox and archive. there's also a theme toggle for light and dark mode – i'm especially proud of how the dark theme turned out! the light theme needs a little work, but i think it's a good start to improve on in the future. oh and btw, these animations for the menus opening and closing? they're pure css, even on mobile~

the right menu has featured tags to browse stuff i've made and written, as well as a search box for anything not featured. tags are a core part of the updated site, serving as collections of art and writing – so they have extra prominence both in the menu and at the bottom of each post. all my most important tags have icons that are loaded dynamically based on their name! and any tags that don't have an icon use the default hashtag. i'm really proud of all the design work that went into it, and i'll show off the icons on their own pretty soon ✨

posts themselves can be blue, purple, or pink, matching my main color palette. the color is based on the post id! so each post's color is always the same, whether you're viewing it on the front page, tag pages, or the post itself.

Design history

this updated blog has been four years in the making, surviving both my name change and multiple iterations of my design language – yet somehow, it still looks just like my years old sketches. i'm impressed at how much i was able to rework and carry forward with me, especially with how many of these ideas felt like dead ends at the time!

that early screenshot at the top is from waayyy back when i was considering moving away from tumblr. it was very tempting to self-host and "own my data" as they say... but i would miss out on all the social features like reblogs. plus, on tumblr people can follow me and see all my posts in the app, as well as on my site – what's not to love? so even though the site's time may be past, i'm sticking with tumblr until they literally nuke it out of orbit~

i've had this blog for nearly ten years now, and the way i've used it has changed tremendously over that time. what started as my first foray into social media turned into a space for sharing things i found that made me happy, sharing my philosophies and outlook on life, sharing my struggles through college and burnout, and now sharing my journey discovering my voice as a person and a creator. so now that i'm a new person with a new voice, i should probably clear out all those crusty old cobwebs and start fresh, right?

not a chance!

if anything, i went back and made sure my old posts look just as good as my new ones, cleaning up tags and backporting my new code to work with old tumblr post layouts. i want to carry my history forward with me! for all these years this blog has been my journal, and even though my journaling changed with time, that core purpose hasn't. honestly, after all the cleaning, i'm inspired to return to those old methods of journaling – share more of myself, share more of what makes me happy, be more free and open and wild ✨

(that said, some of those early posts were especially raw! those have been archived for now. maybe i'll remake the sentiment behind them someday...)

My promise to myself

in the wake of college i realized i was posting less here on the blog; this redesign was an attempt to give it more importance, so that i would use it more. but what i didn't realize was that i was posting less due to burnout... and i stalled out on the redesign, also due to burnout. a double whammy! so i used my blog less than ever, and it languished for years.

on top of that, giving my blog more importance made it more of a Serious Website™ in my head, a place where i had to put my best foot forward at all times. that made me want to post here even less, only when i finished some big or important project! but my blog was never intended for this – i've been posting random nonsense since the beginning.

so what started as a promise that i would use my blog more, became a promise that i would make my blog A Big Deal. and that's not healthy for me! so i stepped back and re-evaluated. first, i started consciously calling this place my journal, to make it a sketchy and rough place with intent. second, i ultimately decided to redesign it anyway, with a new promise: to make it somewhere i'm proud of posting more often, no matter what those posts look like.

and with that promise fulfilled, i'm ready to get back to journaling 💙

The Butterfly Effect and It's Consequences | The Phoenix Effect -

The Butterfly Effect is my main rottmnt fanfic series. About my little rottmnt oc's (Ame) life and how the gang adopting them into the family changed everything mostly for the better but the bad things kinda got alot worse. Idk been focusing on the phoenix effect more

The Phoenix Effect is kinda an extension of that. Its basically the same thing but adds the cass apocalypse series into it. Basically how future Ame being there also changes things and how oopies mystics powers are hard to control after being half dead in stasis for about 12 years hope Ame does trys to leave to protect everyone from himself only to get kidnapped putting everyone in worse danger also oopies isnt that the super dangerous alien someone accidentally freed awhile ago

The Future Diary - So i watched The Hot Box's video on the anime future diary and well here we are

Another rottmnt oc thing. Ame obtains a diary from his future self being like "hey so the world is gonna end soon here's how i think you could possibly stop that. Pls dont do this all alone ur like 5" and ame decides to do it all by himself.

Character stuff

Watcher - *slaps religious trauma onto them* bitch gets sacrificed. Okay okay so Watcher, wasnt always Watcher. Before they used to be Ena a simple kid who was sent away for reasons i havent thought of yet to a church. Blah blah corruption, Watcher gets sacrificed for not falling in line blah blah they were saved and given a second chance.

Dimension - *slaps alot of anxiety and identity issues onto her* bitch got issues. Same as Watcher, Dimension wasnt always Dimension. Before she was Ellie a poor girl hated by her whole town because of the lies their mother spread about them and their father who had left years ago. She only had one friend, Watcher. Somehow they managed to make contact with each other despite being in different universes. Eventually Dimension snapped and went on a killing spree, slowly ripping apart her world in the process because this wasnt supposed to happen (think spiderverse canon events but different ill explain later) with her world crumbling around her, Dimension messages Ena one last time, not knowing Ena was already long gone, and accepts what they assume to be death only to fall into whats basically the anti void from utmv, gets corrupted and became a villain technically more of a multiversal criminal.

OKAY TIME FOR WORLD BUILDING

How does what happened to Dimension's universe work? The way i explained it is like spiderverse canon events but different, but heres the details. Idk how to explain this but bare with me

Imagine each universe as a game in a folder on a computer. Each game has different code, story, art assets basically all are mostly different.

Most games are coded to have very specific story events and when something goes wrong everything breaks. Like take a spaghetti thing of code that shatters the moment you try to do something like trying to talk with an npc while having a status effect and thats how some of these worlds are like. And Dimension's was very much one of those worlds, and her breaking down like that shattered the code of their world and everything fell apart.

Im too tired to continue but my main multiverse is like one big computer own by a game creator who only sometimes knows how to make a stable game

Oh my god, I'm so terribly sorry for not answering this since forever.

I think people noticed my activity on here keeps dwindling more and more, there's just too much going on in my personal life right now, both literally and mentally. Trust me, I wanna create content again, I just don't know when.

But first of all, thank you for this ask and thank you for the compliment, I apologize for not having created any more art in probably months at this point-

And while the answer may be obvious, I always love getting to gush over my favourite boys. I could of course go the easy route and just say Ben and Silver are my faves... But I need to be honest with myself.

I think the posts, the headcanons, the tags and all make it obvious that while my favourite used to be Lost Silver it slowly evolved into it being Ben. And I still stand by that. He isn't only my favourite Creepypasta, he is probably my biggest comfort character and one of my most favourite characters in general.

I don't even fully know why, my neurodivergent brain just decided to hyperfixate on him and hasn't let go of him since. He is in there 24/7 and better pay his goddamn rent soon-

He is lovable, he is so fun to design and draw and make headcanons for, he seems like a great MC to write for, he is genuinely such a nice person despite all he went through, he's so incredibly tragic, like I legit still think he is the saddest Creepypasta ever and you can not change my mind, I just wanna hug him and let him know everything will be fine. But I'm also thirsty for angst, so sucks to be him I guess, lol.

He just... makes me genuinely happy, but don't worry, his boyfri- I mean Silver is still very close up as the second most important Gamingpasta in my heart.

Silver has always been sort of an inspiration to me and a giver of hope which I probably show in my writing, like I often think I may kinda be a traitor to Silver fans or many SilvernMoon shippers, because most seem to care more for him and that's totally fine and cool; I just feel like a faker almost for it lol, but I still love him a lot, I just gotta acknowledge that I want Ben to be happy too, and even think he needs love and comfort more (That's right, I said it).

I'm really sorry if my rambles make no more sense or are becoming incomprehensible. Bottom line, my faves are Ben and Silver, but if being 100% honest my absolute fave is Ben, he's just a funky lil bean.

LU ALTFP: A Link To Four’s Past

Just some fluffy sketches I did for my story idea A link to Four's Past (Yes it's officially named this now) which I will now be tagging any art related to this idea as : ALTFP

So the chain goes back in time and who wouldn't be able to resist a very smol 10 year old Four? Not me and apparently not any of the other Links either. Btw it's Twilight that started this fiasco, everyone else joined and Four is just trying to silently disappear in the background while watching the embarrassment unfold before him

I’ve been thinking more and more about this idea and I wanted to share some of my thoughts and ideas I have for it. One reason being: I doubt I will ever have time to actually make this into a fanfic but I will still continue to do some art for it and maybe small comic skits in the future, *crosses fingers and hopes to not be so busy.* 

Anyway I’ve never posted a blog this long just containing mostly writing, so bear with me, this is all very new for me to do and most of this was just raw writing sent to a dear friend of mine on discord. Thank you @seekingseven​ for entertaining me and picking my brain on this idea! Your questions really had the gears in my head turning and it was fun reading your reactions to my thoughts on this.

This is going to be a very, very long post. So if you're interested on reading more about this story idea, everything will be under the cut.

So just to make this clear, as obvious as this already is, Younger Four is basically Four back when he was on his adventure with Ezlo during the Minish Cap.  Idk but I imagine younger Four more cautious at this time because of the fact Vaaiti is still at large and he is the reason Zelda got turned to stone in front of his very eyes and that his Hyrule is under a bit of chaos since the princess isn't exactly present. I would say the environment or atmosphere of Four's Hyrule at this time might have been tense, full of uncertainty of the fate of the kingdom. So granted, younger Four would be very wary of others around him, he is a smart child after all. 

As for Future/Present Four, as soon as they are thrown into his past Hyrule he wasn't 100% sure it was his Hyrule at first. The chain was still in some confusion as to where they were. After some confirmation, Four believes without a doubt they are in his past but some Link are not too sure about it. Some of the Link's would ask him what makes him so sure and that it's also possible they might be in another Hyrule entirely with a new Hero. Four starts explaining events that are supposed to come to pass, and it works the first time but then things start to change slowly and he starts getting it wrong. Which baffles Four even more! It is not until they meet his younger self they fully believe him. They meet younger Four in the middle of a battle with monsters that horde over castle town.

During this time, Four wasn't feeling very well either, after the time jump he was having the worst case of headaches and occasional dizziness and nausea. This is actually because future Four is physically Linked to past Four. I had this idea that Four doesn't feel very well when his other self is in danger, which later on he seems to figure it out. Depending on Younger Four's condition, Four starts to feel faint.  It becomes this weird kind of spidey sense that the chain uses later to figure out the disruptions happening in his timeline due to changes it is facing because of Dink's influence. But this change always usually involves the attempted assassination to his younger self sent by Dink, Vaaiti and Shadow joining forces. 

Other things to note is that Four has made it clear to everyone to NOT reveal his identity to his younger self. However, they don't entirely lie to him either, they still tell him that they are all Links from different timelines. Four just kinda passes himself as a whole other link entirely, even as younger Four seems suspicious when he realizes they both have the four sword. But knowing that the master sword is also common in each timeline, they easily come up with an excuse. 

Future Four is also a little worried (or self conscious?) about his secrets getting revealed to the chain by his younger self. But at the same time he also know himself very well and knows that the use of his Minish powers or the Four sword is not something that his younger self would just outright share or reveal with a bunch of strangers. That much puts Four at ease but it still works as a double edged sword for him, because he also can't use certain powers that may give away who he really is.

That being said when younger Four does use his powers it's Four that ends up being the only one that saw it and the secret remains with them even though younger Four wasn't fond of someone finding his secret they choose to keep it hush hush. Four is also not 100% sure whether at this point in time Younger Four has Split or not with the Four Sword yet. Although, the idea of them both splitting at the same time and older colors meeting the younger colors would be so funny and awesome. But that also means Four's cover would be blown indefinitely, at this reveal.  

Still, the more things change in his timeline that end up differently than what was supposed to happen, Four starts to wonder if this change in his past would actually change him or create another split in the timeline with a whole new Link that isn't quite him, due to all the changes in their experiences. This very much worries Four, and he tends to talk to Sky and Time about it. The idea scares him a little. 

I know this seems like all angst but I could also imagine the chain gushing over younger Four. And four finding it way too embarrassing, like this is far worse than seeing an old photo of him because they are literally there experiencing his younger self in the flesh. Lol 

Like I definitely imagine Twilight being the first one to just pick up lil' Four like an annoyed cat getting man held by its human owner Or Sky just wanting to hug him, and both Fours being utterly overwhelmed with embarrassment. Or Legend using this moment to ruffle his hair because he can easily pass it off as him teasing him instead of actually wanting to show a bit of affection. <3

All of these questions (some I didn't necessarily have answers to...lol) until now! have had me really take a moment to consider the possibilities. Thanks! 

Yeah I agree, the trio of villains that should have never came to be just sound a lot more threatening when you have help from the future to eliminate a common goal. Unfortunately the same could be said for our heroes and there are NINE (ten with smol Four lol…) of them, so good luck to the villains. 

Now as far as Younger Four ever finding out who Older Four is, the answer is yes. Though the way he finds out is sort of a rude awakening. I've had this scene play in my mind a few times like a sad amv, lol. 

At one point the villains nearly achieve their goal, ambushing younger Four at his most vulnerable state. He doesn't have time to dodge a sword attack from Shadow, but older Four jumps in in his place and takes the brunt of the strike straight to his abdomen.  In which he holds it in place to allow a chance for the others to gain the advantage. In the end Shadow escapes, just barely from the rest of a very vengeful group of Links. 

But rewinding back a little, in that moment Older Four gets stabbed, Younger Four is in shock: YOU, WHY? Why would you give up your life for mine! 

(So the reason younger is so surprised Older Four jumped in for him is because he believed Four didn’t like him (Since he had been avoiding him most of the time for various reason younger Four just doesn’t understand. lmao...)

Older Four: Haha.. give you say? Ah, the irony... No, it's quite the opposite you see... without your life I would cease to exist. 

 I am only taking hold of our life and sustaining both of our futures. 

That's when older Four would finally reveal his identity, although younger Four doesn’t understand it at first and is later told by Time. Of Course I wouldn't kill off older Four, I wouldn't do that to my boy. Lol..

Talking about things I would never do, I would never do what Akira Toriyama did to Trunks at the end of Black Goku Saga. Lmfao. And that's basically allowing Future Trunks to exist alongside another version of himself that is mere weeks in the past of himself because his timeline was destroyed so he had to be put in a timeline where everyone is alive including himself. (I will never forgive Toriyama for this sad conclusion.) 

That being said, as much as another timeline would be cool, the fact remains that this Four would be way too similar to Four as far as his abilities and mental state. Therefore I refuse to allow another timeline to exist, but that doesn’t mean I can't make it seem like that conclusion is very much possible. I would like to highlight this possibility as an alarming problem that is very close to being reality for older Four. I want it to be something that is clearly a situation they are fighting against time with and often teased as a possibility but in the end they are still able to resolve the situation. 

Although, I'm not sure how to make it so that younger Four forgets this happens. Maybe with the help of Zelda, (like when they save her) Time helps Zelda with a spell using his ocarina. Since Zelda is part of the royal bloodline, she can possibly activate its abilities, and with Time, play the song of time to send them back to the present while also returning Younger Four and correcting his timeline. There will be sad goodbyes I guess, since it will be the last time he will remember them… but he leaves them with content in his heart; knowing what he will experience in his distant future and the idea of meeting friends like that is something he is grateful to have planned in his future.

Living with the Pirates of Heart ~Day 9: The Proposal

Hi babies! So, here we are with day 9 of this series. I know this took a long time, but you know all of the shadow banning and the current event made everything get a little delayed. But, even though, here we are with a new story, this time Law is asking Reader an important question... what would it be? 🙊

A/N: Reader is Law’s girlfriend. The fluff (and some angst that hell made me cry) is everywhere. Please enjoy your crying. Btw, the angsty part will have more details in future days. Oh and at the end there is a picture of that specific element! ♥ ~

Day 9: The Proposal

Long legs, long lean legs that tremble. His lips also tremble. Perhaps his voice too. Everything does.

“Am I ready?”. “What if she says no?”. “Is this romantic enough?”. “Ugh, I hate wearing a tie”.

The tie around his neck seems to be tangling, almost choking the young man. Tattooed fingers that fidget with a velvety box inside his pocket. A drop of sweat that garnishes his temple.

“Am I really doing this?”

The sun is going down, orange light that tints the whole autumn landscape. Sunflowers fields, wheat fields. Grey irises reflect her image. A yellow flowery dress flows with the wind as she walks where the soon to be fiancé stands.

“Law...?”

Two weeks before…

“You should wear a suit”. “And a rose on the front pocket”. Law’s best friends surround him, it’s late at night. The captain hasn’t been able to sleep -even less than always-. Something has been haunting his nights constantly. He remembers her words, “Ikkaku, of course I wanna get married! I want to wear a big princess white dress!”. Words he accidentally heard; words that now won’t let him rest. He often finds himself daydreaming of her coming to him, a church, her in white… but this is so scary. What if he is not enough? Marriage should be forever, what if he… what if, what if.

“Captain, you suck ass when it comes to romantic stuff. Leave it all to us” Shachi suggests. “I don’t trust you, Shachi” he says. “What is her favorite type of island, Law? Is already October, an autumn one would be perfect” Penguin tells. “Well, she likes fall… Bepo, can we set course to an autumn island soon?” Law asks. “Aya Aya, Captain! In about two weeks we will be arriving at Hazel Island. Do I set the course?” the mink navigator informs. “Yes, please”.

But this conversation hasn’t always been like this… And Law took way too much to even communicate with the guys about his wedding plans. Not to mention, she, her lover, you, began to feel like shit. Law was acting weird -weirder than ever-. He wasn’t speaking, not even kissing her and it was concerning.

You have stopped sleeping in his room and came back to your old one. At first, it hurt. You kept thinking about him becoming tired of you, so you decided to give him space… If you only knew.

Law wasn’t eating properly, too. He takes way too much to process changes, and his brothers knew exactly that something was wrong with him. And so, one night they planned an emergency intervention…

“He is gonna slice my head up, let Bepo go first”. “WHY ME?”. “Stop, you two”. Penguin broke through the door of Law’s room. The doctor was sitting over the bed, eyes closed, yet glossy cheeks from past tears. “THE FUCKING FUCK IS GOING ON WITH YOU?”.

Law opened his eyes right away, he got so scared he even fell back on the bed. He was so sunk into his own misery he had shut down his own observation Haki. Law was completely vulnerable. And this had happened before…

Pen, Shachi and Bepo sit around him. “We are not going anywhere until you tell us what’s going on” Shachi said, putting his forearm in front of his head just in case his Captain decided to attack him. Law didn’t speak for a long time, and instead he just laid there squeezing his fluffy hat. The guys understood that in order for him to speak, he had to feel safe and decided to hug him tightly.

“Law… this is just like those times with our old man” Shachi said. “Man, I miss Mr. Wolff!” Pen whispered. The mink wasn’t speaking either, until… “I’m sorry” Bepo excused himself just because. “WHAT FOR?” Penguin shouted. “I don’t know. Sorry” the polar bear apologized once again. “Bepo!!!” Shachi screamed. A subtle, low, yet pure laugh could be heard in between the guys bickering. Law’s soft laugh. “There you go, little booboo!” Penguin mocked the doctor. “Stop, you guys!”.

The night went by just like those old times at Mr. Wolff cabin. They felt little one more time, they laughed, they fought with the pillows, they tried to make Law to eat umeboshi… but failed. Yet, the reason for Law's misery wasn’t exposed until late in the night…

The band decided to sleep in Law’s room for the night. It was really late, almost dawn when Law looking at the ceiling confessed.

“I want to propose to her”.

Silence. Total and complete silence. The guys weren’t sure if they had heard those words. Law getting married? You know how weird that sounds?. “Oooook…” the elder, Penguin, said. None of them were even blinking.

Some minutes later, Bepo started crying. He jumped over Law, hugging him, in full garchu mode. “Captain!!! ohhhh captain!! You married!! I’m so proud of you!” the Mink cried out loud, snot all over Law’s cheeks. “Bepo, for the love of God. Stop!!” And even if Law was still feeling insecure, the pain of having so much inside his chest was finally released…

“Guys, get ready! We are emerging soon! shouts Law, who has been informed about the Polar Tang finally arriving at the destination that will be in his memory, forever.

“Law is there anything on this island?” you ask, still a little bit hurt because Law kept acting cold with you for a few weeks now. “Uhm… not really. We need supplies” he lies. And you know he lies, but you prefer to believe in his words. After all, there was nothing else to do.

He quickly leaves the submarine without you. Bepo, Shachi and Pen go with him. “Why are you leaving me, Law?...” you mumble as you watch his silhouettes disappear in the busy streets of that beautiful fall island. Ikkaku pulls you out of your misery, “I heard this island has the most beautiful wedding dresses ever, let’s go explore!”. “Ok…” you accept, because even if you don’t really feel like watching such dresses, you want your friend to be happy.

The cobbled streets full of red, orangey, and brown dry leaves that crunch under your feet, are full of stores and lively people. The scenery at the back of the street shows beautiful mountains that start to show a white crown around their peeks. Everything smells like cinnamon and cardamom; some pumpkins garnish the entrance of the many wooden buildings.

A hot chocolate on your hands warms your fingers, as the weather gets a little colder. For some reason, your friend insisted on you two wearing pretty dresses and not that boring white boiler suit. The tips of your noses show a little blush when you two look at the photos Ikakku’s little portable den den mushi took of you.

“Babe, look! Look! aren’t they pretty?” the brunette points at a princess-like white dress at some shop window. You are driven like a bug to the light. The white wedding dress is perfect. Your reflection shows on the window, and you can even imagine yourself in it. “Why don’t we try it?” Ikkaku suggests, pulling you into the store.

“The girls have entered the wedding dress store. Phase 1, ready. Over and out” Shachi informs his partners in crime via his portable den den mushi. “You are such a nerd, Shachi… over and out? Come on!” Law grunts on the other side of the line. “Fuck you, Captain” Shachi hangs the transponder while hiding behind a wall.

On the other side of the street Penguin tells Law, pushing himself to enter into a little -yet expensive looking- jewelry shop, “Ok, so now Ikkaku got her into a good mood. Next, the ring”

“Welcome, refined men. That’s a good-looking suit, sir!” the old guy from the store greets them. “G...good af… afternoon” Law stutters as he gets closer to the counter. Pen has to suppress a giggle, it’s so damn funny looking at the cool laid-back man acting all clumsy and nervous.

“Looking for a wedding ring, perhaps?” the old man guesses. “Yes… a rose gold one, please” Law asks, sure that’s your favorite color for jewelry. The man shows him the multiple options, yet none seems to please the surgeon. Until something catches his eyes.

“Excuse me Sir, what about that one?” Law points at a specific ring the man didn’t show him yet. The man, surprised that a young pal had picked a vintage one, takes the ring out of the counter and puts it into Law’s palm. “This one… Pen. It’s perfect. It reminds me of...” Law chimes showing the gold band with a Rubi heart to his friend. “It’s really pretty, Law” Penguin tells him, melting because of Law’s happiness.

“That’s actually a vintage one. A random man once sold it to me. He said he found it in a destroyed city… Flevance… You know, the place where… well. It has a name engraved on the inside. We could buff it out if you prefer” the jeweler informs them. And Law, who is barely hearing what the old man is saying, gets his eyes full of tears when he reads the name of his mother on the inside of the ring. “Law” Penguin whispers, putting a hand over his shoulder.

“I… sir… this is my mother’s” Law mumbles. “Is it? I bought it from a man who used to loot abandoned places” the jeweler says, heartbroken because of his client’s reaction.

“Boy, take it. That’s yours”

Bepo and Shachi have already prepared the hill where the proposal is gonna take part. They call a few times before, until Penguin answers. “Oi, having a little meltdown here” he informs. “What the fuck, why?” the red-haired asks. “Tell you later, we are already walking up to there. Did you tell Ikkaku?”. “I did, Sir!”.

Puru puru puru… puru puru puru…

“(Name), can you wait for me a sec? Gotta answer” your friend says and runs out of the store. You two have been trying some white dresses, and now are actually trying for some shoes. Ikkaku going out to answer a call is quite weird, but you try not to think much.

Suddenly, she enters and snatches you from your arm. “It’s time! Let’s go!” she screams. You, stumbling on your own feet, running to keep up with his pace, ask her what’s going on. “Ahh… you will see when we get there!”.

Sun is setting over the horizon, everything looks so pretty under an orange and lilac sky. A soft breeze plays with your hair while you run with your friend through a path surrounded by poplars and sweetgums. You climb a hill, a path formed by some burning candles guides you to a pretty arch made out of branches, leaves and fairy lights. From the hill you could see endless sunflower and wheat fields. And under the arch, the love of your life waits for you dressed in a black suit.

“Law…?”

You get reflected on his grey eyes; he gets on yours. The sienna light that bathes both of you, makes his caramel skin look so pretty. No other man, there is no other man. You walk up to him; he moves back and forth in his place with his hands on his pockets.

“Babe… uhm” he mumbles, lips trembling. His eyes are wide open, a drop of sweat on his temple. “Law? What is this? This is so pretty!” you tell him, trying to understand what’s going on. “Babe… I… (Name)-ya…”. “What, Law?”.

Suddenly the doctor puts one of his knees on the ground. “L-aw? Y... You…” you stutter, it couldn’t be… no way…

Your lover blinks a few times, his perfect profile bathed by the sunset light. He takes some air and pops the question; “(Name)-ya...Marry me, please”. He shows a little velvet box open, a rose gold ring with a ruby heart strung into it. “Please, marry me. I… I love you” he utters.

Your eyes get filled with tears, yet your heart is full of joy and relief. You crunch in front of him, grazing your hand over his cheek.

“Of course'. Of course babe! I love you Law, I love you so much!

Your now fiancé, takes the ring out of the box and softly slides it into your finger. Both of you stand up. Law, who started crying like never before, holds you from your waist and makes you spin in the air.

“I’m the happiest man alive!!!” he shouts, loud, loud enough for the whole island to hear. “I LOVE YOU, (Name)-ya!!”.

A smile, the smile your memory will cherish until your last breath… ♥ ~
