Thinking about the bilingualism of the turtles and just realized like

The mutant mayhem turtles must have ZERO knowledge of Japanese chjzjddh. Like Splinter does have an accent (though Jackie Chan is from Hong Kong according to Google, not Japan), but he's a normal New York rat. Not Hamato Yoshi transformed into a rat, like 2012/2018, and not a pet rat that belonged to Hamato Yoshi, like 2003. Zero connection to Japan at all

I'm just imagining them all in a big crossover. 2012 gives me the vibes of being the MOST connected to Splinter's culture, so they're all bilingual (to differing degrees), they know a lot about Japanese culture and mythology and all that jazz.

2003 I think has some knowledge of the language and culture. Splinter lived in Japan with Tang Shen, and then Yoshi took him to America. If he was smart enough as a rat to pick up ninjutsu, I think he is smart enough to know the language and the bits and pieces of the culture he would witness, being... a rat.

ROTTMNT, I do not see them speaking the language or knowing much of anything about the culture, lol. They probably know some, being around Splinter, but I don't get the impression Splinter often spoke Japanese, and he didn't really train them like the other Splinters. I think they would still pick up some habits from their dad, like we see them bow to him a few times, and I bet he's made them family recipes at least a FEW times. The kids would pick up on a few words I'm sure, either from Splinter or from Lou Jitsu movies lmao, but culturally I think they know very very little. The 2012 boys would be horrified to hear them butcher the language, but on the other hand I bet they know more Spanish than 2012.

And then Mutant Mayhem... Literally not a single word. Even the Rise turtles are surprised how little they know. Except MAYBE Donnie lmao, being a huge weeb, but if he's anything like the weebs I know the knowledge of the language is... incredibly limited. Plus he's a kpoppie, so he may know more Korean than Japanese.

Day 28 of @sariphantom's Risetober prompts! I have this theory in my head that Leo doesn't know fluent Spanish, just enough to toss some Spanish words into his vocabulary here and there. He can usually make out the gist of what's being said, but won't admit it if something goes over his head. Hueso knows this, of course, and intentionally starts using Spanish words that Leo wouldn't know. Leo has yet to ask him for a definition.

bilingual tmnt 2012 and rotmnt head cannons!!

Ok so I’m Mexican American (ew america) and my mom was born and raised in Mexico

Yet I’m not bilingual

I’m taking Spanish class in my high school

This is what I think the rottmnt kids are going thru

My mother had to assimilate to get a job here. And I think that’s what rottmnt Yoshi had to do too.

But my mother refused to make my first language spanish, she wanted my life here to be easier.

I think Yoshi didn't want to be reminded of what he left behind.

He used his ninjitsu skills to become a movie star and actively runs away from his heritage from the show.

Not that he doesn't want to be Japanese, or that he wants to forget that part of himself, but he wanted to branch out and be Lou Jitsu, and japanese tradition and culture are not as important to him and his identity as 2012 Splinter.

He ran away from tradition.

I firmly hc that the rottmnt turtle know japanese in the way I know spanish; nothing beside the scoldings and the frustrated mumbling of their father.

"Kuso!" Their dad will yell as he stubs his foot.

"Konoyarou," He mumbles as he talks about a person who screamed at the sight of him.

"No Blue! Aho! Don't eat random stuff off the floor!"

I hc that rottmnt Splinter has a potty mouth, and because of the all his kids know is how to curse and scold someone in japanese, which you know, they use to insult each other.

The rottmnt kids have to go out of their way to learn japanese, it's an underlying language in their home and a part of their heritage, but they live like third generation immigrants.

As opposed to the 2012 turtles, whose first language was most definitely japanese.

2012 Splinter grew up, fell in love, and lived in Japan for the majority of his life. He loved his heritage and tradition, the only reason he moved to New York was because he was literally running for his life. It was chance that he ended up in America.

In Japanese schools, much like many other schools in different countries, have a class that teaches english bc ya know, it's the national language bc british and american ppl be pissbabies. So Splinter learned english, and like the good student he was, was good at it.

That why for he lived there he could live comfortably and could talk to others (like the pet shop owner), bc he already knew english.

Then he got mutated and four sons lmao.

So he raised them the way he was raised; traditionally japanese. The language, the tradition, the customs, everything.

So all the tmnt teetles are fluent in japanese, and a part of the reason they were not allowed topside before they were 15 is because they weren't done learning english yet.

They often forget words in english, and in the heat of the moment, it's the first language that comes up.

Raph and Mikey's english slang comes from the comics they've read and the movies they watched.

Leo's english mimics basic english textbooks and Captain Ryan's

Donnie sounds like an encyclopedia bc that's where he gets most of his vocabulary from.

TLDR: The rottmnt turtles only know insults and curse words in japanese while the 2012 turtles are bilingual; fluent in both Japanese and English because of the way their respective Splinters raised them.

The turtles are bilingual!

I love bilingual characters, so now I’m gonna talk about it and rottmnt!

So, we all know the turtles are bilingual. In the show, it’s just mostly Leo speaking a bit of Spanish every now and then (eg. ”Vamanos, hermanos” and ”Muy rápido”) but I think it’s fair enough to assume that all four of them can speak Spanish.

Which of course means one of three things:

1. Splinter can speak Spanish and they learned it from him

2. They all collectively decided to learn Spanish together from the internet

3. April taught them Spanish – and maybe can speak it as well

Personally my favourites are the latter two – but the first one leads me to think that they would also be able to speak Japanese fluently. After all, their dad’s Japanese – it’d only make sense that he taught them the language.

I really like the idea of them speaking these languages in their everyday life, way more than in the show. So, here are some headcanons!

- Splinter used to talk to the brothers in Japanese when they were kids, especially when telling them stories or comforting them after a nightmare. It reminds him of his childhood and he sometimes misses those moments now that the boys are older

- Leo was the first to take interest in learning Spanish – he stumbled upon it on accident and wanted to show off to his brothers. Mikey was the next one to begin learning, followed by Raph. Donnie took a bit longer because of his hearing problems (another headcanon of mine)

- April and Donnie often speak Spanish together and they’ve been talking about learning a language together – they just can’t choose which one would be the most useful

- Mikey speaks Spanish the most out of the four

- Splinter has been learning Spanish with the help of Raph and Donnie

- Raph often switches to Japanese when comforting his brothers

- Sometimes when rambling, Donnie might switch between languages without noticing at all. No one ever mentions it, Mikey even talks back in whatever language he’s currently speaking if he has any questions

- Sometimes the brothers argue in different languages: they start in English, switch to Spanish mid-sentence and finish in Japanese

- Most heart-to-heart conversations the boys and Splinter have are a mix of English and Japanese

- April doesn’t understand much Japanese, but she’s slowly learning it to understand her turtle friends

- Mikey and April have a bunch of Spanish nicknames for each other

- Leo and Donnie often use Spanish words of affection for each other – they’re also learning Spanish sign language together so they could have a ”secret twin language”

- April grew up speaking both English and Spanish

- Sometimes when frustrated, April rants in Spanish

- Raph and Splinter often speak Japanese to each other

ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE HEADCANON EVER

i love multilingual turtles!!!

i do think 2012 it's the one iteration that seems to be more in touch with yoshi's culture the most.

this might be for the fact that yoshi didn't have absolutely anyone at all when he arrived to new york, a complete unknown different place to him.

it's not literally specificed but one can deduce yoshi got the four turtles in the first place as an attempt to not feel as lonely after losing his family,his clan and being exiled.

so after the mutation i feel like yoshi would have taught the boys how to speak and read in japanese first instead of english since he would have been trying to find a level of normalcy and comfort in all he was going trough.

Another fact is that the brothers are used to splinter telling them stories as a way to pass the time when they were growing up. I like to think he tells them stories about different things like legends and just silly random stories from his past, all in yoshi's og language.

The show also shows it a lot! the brothers speak and understand japanese words pretty randomly! So i do think they mostly speak it while they are by themselves exclusively and at home instead of english (probably not much when april or casey are around as to not make them feel left out of the conversation tho)

also another fun silly headcanon i like is that mikey somehow speaks and understands spanish because of how he says random words of the language in the show too lol. as to how he learnt it himself idk tho. he probably found some telenovelas in vhs or smt lmao

Eagle-eyed turtles have noticed that In DD's debut anniversary selfie, parts of the background have been edited. It has led to speculation and discussion about what might have been hidden.

If you look at the image, the trees are obviously heavily edited, and the street itself is duplicated and fuzzy along the edge where it meets the trees.

Some people think it resembles a street in Beijing near where GG was filming there in August (where turtles believe DD was driving him to and from work), and some are talking about the street signs in Inner Mongolia, which are bilingual and would be a giveaway.

There's no real consensus on where the photo might have been taken, but all agree it's very 👀.

Tmnt 2012 hc:

I think that if the turtles were humanized they would all be black and/or blasian since they’re siblings and would have to have the same genetic tree (in 2012 I’m pretty sure they’re biologically related). However I love idea that they have slight differences between them since they hang out in different areas in nyc (a diverse city with a bunch of different cultures that I think would really interest them).

So anyways I hc that Splinter brought them all up to be bilingual, however Raph and Donnie aren’t as good at Japanese anymore since I think they aren’t as good with languages and they would consume a lot of English content growing up + Leo probably started translating Splinter for them and they kinda stopped needing to use it, so it faded a bit. I think Raph stopped speaking Japanese but can still understand it and could speak it (with some grammar and pronunciation errors) in a pinch. Donnie rarely speaks Japanese but he speaks it from time to time with Splinter, Leo, or Mikey. Leo is probably fluent in Japanese and English and I think her (Leo is transfem in my books) and Mikey can read Japanese while Raph and Donnie can’t. However, I think that Leo code switches and sometimes makes tiny grammar/pronunciation errors, with Mikey being the best at Japanese of all their (Mikey is aroace gender-fluid) siblings.

I don’t think Raph is a big language buff (unlabeled he/him non binary Raph supremacy), so he probably just knows English and Japanese. Meanwhile, I think Donnie knows code languages and probably taught themself (They/them for Donnie, source: me) obscure/dead/constructed languages like Esperanto or Latin. Leo probably can understand/read Spanish to some extent, though she’s barely conversational speaking it. She might also know certain phrases in a bunch of different languages since I hc that she wants to travel. Mikey, in my opinion, will be the best at picking up languages, probably fluent in Latin American Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese, conversational in Italian and Korean, and has begun to pick up some Haitian Creole (though her pronunciation isn’t good because she probably sounds either very American or has WAY to heavy of an accent). They also codeswitch and mesh together languages pretty often, so his siblings have begun to pick up a bit of their languages, especially Leo (how she learned Latin American Spanish)

I think they speak primarily English among themselves and Japanese/English with Splinter, who is plays a little game with himself when he hears music to guess the language it’s in

Colorcoded!Metalhead lore : -Meets for short -They/them -Is mute, communicate through their own invented sign language (3 fingers family)

-Backstory time :

Meets is a self-learning AI, proudly made by Donnie, that then grew scared of it because of superstition and well, movies. He decided to shut him down. Much to everyone's surprise, Metalhead isn't really kin on dying, so he fought back and escaped. At that point Donnie believes he created a powerful super-villain and he's full on having a panic meltdown. His brothers and friends reassures him and help him go looking for it. They all have a lot of trouble finding it, until they realize it's with the Mutanimals, hiding. They took it in thinking it was a really fucked up mutant. The turtle family bust in, explains the situation and the Mutanimals are like "... I don't know mate they seem pretty cool. Have you tried talking to them before going on a rampage ?" Donnie is confused (cough cough movies) and looks at Metalhead and they look DOWNRIGHT TERRIFIED. And then the turtle family looks at each other and go : oh. Ohhhhh we were huge assholes there for a hot minute. Anyway, they're adopted now. -Tiny metallic version of the turtles -Colorcoded Pink -No mouth but overly expressive eyes. -Raph is the best at learning the sign language, Donnie second, Mikey third and Leo is bad at it but he’s trying. -They’re interested in science for it’s capacity of Explaining Everything -They like the science of people as well. -They love gossiping with Raph, and can be quite obnoxious about it (abilities such as seeing through walls and enhanced hearing) -The reason Raph is the best at learning the language is because he’s very motivated by the idea of gossiping more with his sibling. -Share their room with Shelldon -Interested in “science” in the broad way, they like all fields. -Learn engineering with Don and go get infos about other fields elsewhere. -Donnie is the 2nd most motivated to learn the sign language because of when they work on a project together, he sometimes give a task to Metalhead but they can’t communicate about it and it frustrates Don. -Meets sometimes acts as the Mikey Babysitter tm. When Mikey fucks up Meets is usually the one to clean up. -Mikey is the one that tries his very best to make Meets feels welcome and part of the family. Meets deeply appreciate it. -Leo is put off by the whole situation and it takes him a while to warm up to them, which is why he’s the last at understanding the language, far, far behind Mikey. -Splinter immediatly saw them as the reasonnable spawn, and keeps their brothers away from stupid teen shit. He didn’t expect Metalhead to also do stupid teen shit. -April and Casey thinks the turtles getting a robot brother is hella metal. Alright it's almost Hispanic Heritage month again yall. Here's a list of Animated characters that I, a Latina, cried over when I found out they were Latin American

For clarification, "Found out" means, having no previous knowledge of said characters and within the context of the show/movie they are confirmed Latin American.

(From the perspective of a Costa Rican 🇨🇷 specifically)

The entire Madgrial Family (Encanto)

The moment I saw the teaser trailer for Encanto I started crying. I was so BEYOND EXCITED to see real, true, positive beautiful Latin American representation in a Disney movie. I'm not even Colombian but seeing something like this become so popular made me so happy. Being able to fully understand "Dos Orugitas" in Spanish just hits so different, its not the same in English. It's such a beautiful step for Latin American representation, and I'm so excited to see what comes next for us. (Still holding out for my Latina Disney princess tho. And no, Elena doesn't count) I've also been told I look just like Mirabel and seeing a character that looks like me in a Disney movie just made my heart soar.

Luz Noceda (The Owl House)

Bruh a bisexual Latina with mommy issues AND she's bilingual??? She's just like me fr.

Lance McClain (V*ltron Legendary Defender)

He was my absolute favorite character in V*ltron and I will NEVER forgive them for ruining his arc and making him sad forever. He deserved a happy ending. He's NOT "just a boy from Cuba", he's so important and lovely.

Miles Morales (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse)

I'm not a comic book reader, so Into the Spiderverse was the first time I met Miles. Finding out he was Afro Latino made me heart soar. He's a sweet boy, such a good character in the movie, and definitely deserved the Oscar. Can't wait for the sequel.

Claire Nuñez (Tales of Arcadia)

I literally laugh my ass off whenever I watch the episode "Hidden City Job" and they do the whole Don Suave bit. Like it's so over the top yet accurate to telenovela characters that I can't help but laugh every time. When they first introduced Capitan Piel, I instantly laughed so hard before they even translated it because they did the whole Skin and Bones bit and I just thought it was so clever. 10/10 duo I'd love to see more of them. Phineas and Ferb was the first fandoms I was ever in, and Isabella holds such a special place in my heart. Love her to pieces

• Marco Diaz (Star vs. The Forces of Evil)

Svtfoe was also one of the first fandoms I was in, so seeing one of the leads be portrayed as Mexican made 12 year old me so happy.

• Miguel Rivera (Coco)

Coco is such a beautiful movie, and I ONLY watch it in Spanish. Miguel is such a sweet and special boy, he really brought the joy of music back into his family.

• Soos (Jesus) Alzamirano Ramirez

Gravity Falls was ALSO one of the first fandoms I was in (PnF, GF, and Svtfoe were my main 3 for a time), and finding out this loveable goof was Latino made me really happy

• Princess Elena Castillo Flores

Now she may not be an official Disney princess (she doesn't meet all the requirements to be part of the franchise) but that doesn't mean she isn't excellent representation for young children. Although the show doesn't represent one specific Latin American country/culture, the show does have bits and pieces of many different LatAm cultures, and even some indigenous inspiration here and there with all the mythology aspects. It isn't perfect, but I do still appreciate Elena's presence in Disney.
