Have you decided what your fav characters’ favorite plays are?

NO I'M TOO OVERWHELMED LMAO HELP!! Okay but here are some thoughts about what sort of theatre I think they enjoy:

Lestat: Obviously since he got his start doing commedia dell'arte I think he'll always have a soft spot in his heart for those old comedies. (Honestly, I think Lestat is one of the only vampires who enjoys "lowbrow" comedy and I love that for him.) The style of traveling street theatre Lestat would've been performing during his time as Lelio was largely improvisational, and though it moved into a more scripted form over time, I think Lestat is an improv queen. I also get all giddy and happy thinking about his reaction to the fact that commedia dell'arte is still performed today! Like, I did a production of Servant of Two Masters in college lmfao it's still viewed as one of the foundational tenants of theatre to this day and I think that would really tickle him.

He's also a Shakespeare fan but historically speaking we know Lestat would've had to have read French translations which of course weren't impossible to come by, but given all of Lestat's circumstances in his early life (poor, uneducated, etc) it's definitely worth noting that he would've had to have worked hard to get at Shakespeare. I think it's so funny that his favorite play in canon is Macbeth and that he sees himself as Macbeth, whereas Louis and Claudia totally saw him as Lady Macbeth (which is why I wrote a lil ficlet about it LOL)

Okay LASTLY I also just want to say I think Lestat loves loves LOOOOVE restoration comedy and the comedy of manners that was a little before his time but just really focused on like. Outrageous comedy and satire. Lestat likes to laugh, okay!! He loves Moliere just as much as he loves Shakespeare! Tartuffe and She Stoops to Conquer are definitely plays he can quote by heart.

Armand: Shakespeare, yes, but very specifically: Jacobean Revenge Tragedies. These were a lot darker, a lot more hardcore and angsty (as the title suggests!). One day I'll have to get Armandblr's input for some meta and psychological background as to why Armand would be obsessed with plays where the protagonist is wronged so egregiously that they go down a path of murder and (gruesome, often cannibalistic) bloodshed and rage-induced hysteria that ultimately ends in their own demise. But for now I'll just say that I feel it in my bones. I think he staged The Spanish Tragedy at least a few times at the Theatre des Vampires.

Also I think he'd definitely be into theatre of the absurd, especially in his Devil's Minion era! He goes through phases where he really leans into the existentialism and finds it amusing and thought-provoking, but sometimes it also majorly fucks him up (similar to Lestat)

Louis: He's a Romantic at heart, and certainly he loves the classics, but we've already been over Shakespeare so I'll say that I also think Louis has a soft spot for the American canon. Think Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Eugene O'Neill, etc. He's a modernist girlie, and I think those plays would be a good guiding light into understanding modern America for Louis. I think Louis often sees middle class America as a fascinating subject to study (rather than, like, a reality that real people live), and I think modernist plays are really good at toe-ing the line of like, being deeply humanizing and beautiful and tragic if done right, and also still being somewhat performative and maybe even a bit artificial and contained behind a fourth wall. I think that dichotomy would be fascinating to Louis. His favorites would be A View from the Bridge and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Marius: Unfortunately there are like 0 Roman tragedies that survived in writing, but we know that they existed and were actually slightly different than Greek tragedies in that the characters actually voiced more of their internal psychological conflict, and also apparently the playwrights were influenced by the development of new rhetorical theory, so a lot of the writing incorporated like public persuasion. So I do think Marius would've been into those but listen I also happen to know for a fact that Marius' favorite play is Shakespeare's Coriolanus. He told me himself. I just read over the wiki synopsis to refresh my memory and I'm losing my mind over this line: "The two tribunes condemn Coriolanus as a traitor for his words and order him to be banished. Coriolanus retorts that it is he who banishes Rome from his presence." like PLEASE that's so petty I love it. Real talk though Marius loves a good political drama and look I know I've brought up Shakespeare a lot in this post already but no one is doing it like him, especially with the Romans!!

this is actually kind of about Nie Huisang too but cut for spoilers

its fascinating to look at wei wuxian's characterization and realize one of the major themes is how he, as one of the, if not THE smartest person in the room, looks at cultivation society and their beliefs and basically goes "yeah nah i'm out" -- not giving up his powers or his family, but simply refusing to play a game he's well aware that he has no chance of winning. (Lan Wangji figured this out well before him, which is why he spent thirteen years steadily refusing to do anything but what his conscience told him. in Wei Wuxian's defense, he spent most of that time dead.) so he refuses to be a hero or a villain any more, refuses to be the scapegoat that he's been molded to be since he came to the Jiangs.

(as an aside im actually real curious about what word they actually use when people call WWX 'the son of a servant', because China has a long history of slavery and bondservanthood, so is it just like, a class thing? or was his dad an actual slave or bondsman? was he a freedman? so many questions.

i believe that, like in most slave-holding cultures, you could be born with the status of a slave and i have a vague idea that if one parent was free or a freedsman the child could inherit freedom from them, but it's very possible i'm mixing up my cultures. the romans, man. [i have the vague impression that in imperial rome, a child born to an enslaved woman is also born enslaved, but a child born to a free woman inherits her free status because, uh, slaves couldn't legally hold property without permission. and women and children were. very much. property.] [depending on the era because roman history, by the narrowest definition, tends to be um. a bit of a sprawl] either way, its definitely a class issue and WWX does appear to be freeborn. anyway!)

but its still impossible for him to ignore suffering, or what he considers wrongdoing. WWX has an instinct to help people that somehow survived everything that happened to him.

and whats interesting about that particular bit of WWX's character -- the willingness to walk away, learned at such a high price, but also the willingness to seek justice -- is what Nie Huisang is betting his entire plan on. NHS bets that WWX would refuse to take power, or revenge, but that his inherent decency would make him see this puzzle through. that once again, WWX would follow his instinct to help, and also that even when WWX figures things out, he's going to understand what NHS had to do. im not saying that WWX approves of it, by any means or stretch of the imagination, but he understands it.

and he's right! he bases his entire delicate Jenga tower of a plot on his knowledge of WWX and he wins the whole god damn game. and im willing to bet that he and WWX are the only two that know it.

Oh, I think you're referring to the Cygnus 1985 AU, which actually has nothing to do with Fallout and is its own standalone universe. Sorry for the confusion! I like to reuse my OCs in a bunch of different AUs lol, so while it's still Vannika she's a little different from FNV Vannika. She's not quite as evil, for example. Like, she's really been Through It but not to the extent of FNV Vannika who was in a cannibal death cult in a post-apocalyptic desert lol. Also there is no army of Roman cosplayers to help Soviet Vannika get any kind of revenge, she's on her own and doesn't even know who it is she should be getting revenge from.

For backstory, FNV Vannika was a farmgirl that then later on ran away and joined the Jackal Gang, and "became" Courier Six after killing the real Courier for their delivery so she could get the caps herself. Benny shoots her and she wakes up with amnesia and Vannika assumes she was an actual courier all along. (Until she gets her memory back anyway and she realizes why she has this big subconscious grudge against the NCR.)

Cygnus Vannika is a highschool dropout from Sverdlovsk (current day Yekaterinburg) Russia who committed violent crimes alongside her cousin, Oleg. But then she gets caught attempting to steal the car of a visiting DDR officer and is given the choice to go to prison or serve in the Soviet military. She picks military service and is sent to East Berlin where she ends up in a relationship with the same DDR officer she tried to carjack lmao. Then a Big Bad Mysterious Event happens and it all goes downhill from there.

This got super long, sorry lmao. Anyway I really need to make a reference post with the basics of each non-Fallout AU so you guys don't get completely lost on what I'm yammering on about.

Remus has always acted like he was totally fine being dead since the beginning, but sometimes when it’s just him and Janus, he’ll get really quiet and mourn the fact that his reckless behavior caused him to die before he ever got a chance to prove himself.

Sometimes Logan’s leg gives out and he’ll fall right through the floor. Broken limbs are a bitch when you’re dead.

Speaking of, Virgil can do some fucked up shit with his neck. Like a cartoon giraffe, this dude scares the others sometimes with how he can bend and break his neck all over again.

The reason Janus and Virgil have these shadows rolling off them is because they have a vengeful streak. Janus is a little more shadowy tho bc a reaper needs to blend in.

I tried going off of different types of pictures of ghost for each of they’re designs. Logan and Patton are based on ghosts you see in screens, Roman and Remus are both supposed to be photograph ghosts, Virgil are those flashes of light where you can’t quite make much out, and Janus is ofc supposed to be the shadowy demon ghosts.

I can’t tell you entirely why Roman’s design is so pale, but I was mostly going off of how ghosts are presented in theatre and old media. Idk I was struggling with how I wanted him to look a lot. Remus is those photos you take from night vision lenses ya know??

Patton is my favorite bc I tried making it look like a shitty television screen in the 70s where it’s all staticky and you can feel the heat coming off it which helps bc he probably leaves warm spots.

Remus and Roman get vertigo real easily. Roman hates it, but Remus thinks it’s fun barfing up ectoplasm.

Speaking of ectoplasm, that shit is basically what your fluid turns into when you die. All that blood and vomit coming from them?? That’s ectoplasm. It looks the same as normal fluids, but it’s thicker and duplicates itself. They no longer have bodies to produce those fluids, so the soul does it themselves by repeating the way they died.

Reapers can’t move on until they finish their lists of souls to guide.

Reapers are also vengeful ghosts that have killed the living and have to serve their sentence by saving souls until they are “forgiven” or they fail a soul and they take their place as reaper.

Ghosts that don’t know what they need in order to move on are considered lost and wandering. Remus is one of these ghosts.

Patton hates it when members of his family die, but he enjoys talking with them and helping Janus to guide them to rest.

Janus refuses to talk about when he was alive or when he was a New Dead because he doesn’t want to be seen differently. He thinks them all as friends and he believes they wouldn’t like him anymore if they knew anything about him.

Roman did in fact commit suicide, but he wasn’t aware he did it until he woke up dead. He pretty much fell into a dissociative state and took too many pills without even realizing it. He keeps insisting that it was a genuine accident.

When Logan gets a little more used to being dead, he will ask to go back to his work and see who has taken his job as a teacher, how the kids are dealing with his death, watching over some that took it particularly hard. Patton couldn’t go with bc he has to stay near family, but the others had a fun trip there.

Janus and Virgil fight a lot because Virgil still wants revenge on the people that drove him to die, but Janus won’t let him do that.

Jokes aside, I just watched the teaser and I'm actually kind of intrigued? It's real disappointing that we don't get to see the vacuo squad, of course, but the island looks interesting based on what's shown so far.

I'm really hoping that volume 9 is good because vol 8 left a real sour taste in my mouth. RWBY used to be one of my favorite shows and I've put a lot of time and money into the series. I'd love to really enjoy a volume again to the level I did the first 3.

i don't know if i could enjoy rwby as much as i did back in the first three, especially since i came in during v5 & that was one of the worst volumes before v8 struck lmao. i think there's just a lot of bad blood that co exists with a want for this show to be good like it once was.

but, if we're going to get this island, i hope we really explore it. i don't want it to be another mistral or atlas where we get like three locations & we're stuck there. use the environment to your advantage !! put the team in different match ups !! don't fucking shove jaune in the spotlight again, they were doing so well with him in a support role where he should be. actually figure out what you're doing with neo & what you want her to be cause right now, she's just a stand in for fans crying for roman content or revenge for roman. neo isn't a character at this point, she's a prop.

the most interesting part of the teaser was absolutely the island & i think that will be the draw in for a bunch of fans who are willing to give rwby one last try. let's hope they don't blow it.

Their schedules being opposite had always been a thing, but since Virgil’s taken on his job, it’s been to an even more extreme level.

Their bedroom door flies open. 

“I have to rant about academia, are you up yet?” Logan demands, sounding entirely too lively. Usually, Virgil would cite the time, but he lost that particular privilege as soon as he took on the night shifts at the hospital, so he can’t say Logan sounds too lively for six-thirty at night.

About three seconds later, Virgil’s alarm goes off. Virgil groans, pulling his pillow over his head.

“Virgil,” Logan complains (oh, he would so hate it if Virgil said he was complaining.) 

“You’re a monster,” Virgil whines directly into the mattress, as he’s made an attempt to keep his pillow over his ears, despite the fact that it won’t dissuade Logan.

“Good,” Logan says. “According to my calculations, it has been approximately eleven and a half hours since you’ve eaten. I haven’t had dinner yet. What do you want?”

“Hello, Virgil,” Virgil grumbles into his mattress. His warm mattress, that has never betrayed him by waking him up before his alarm. “Good morning, Virgil—”

“—factually inaccurate—”

“—did you sleep well? How was your shift last night? Oh, here, let me—”

As Virgil has been complaining, Logan has walked over to the bed. Virgil thinks, oh, good, he might sit down and calm down.

But no. Logan removes the pillow Virgil has clutched over his ears, and immediately thwaps Virgil over the head with it.

“Hey!” Virgil squawks, rolling over.

“Oh, my apologies,” Logan says. “I thought throwing open the door and immediately demanding your romantic partner, and I quote, wake the fuck up, Logan, you will not BELIEVE the bullshit that I had to deal with right before my alarm went off was how we were waking each other now, or have you forgotten your return from shift this morning?”

“I had to assist on a butt stuff thing!” Virgil says. “You love hearing about the butt stuff things! You’re overjoyed to get the opportunity to rant about the height of human stupidity!”

“At five-thirty in the morning?!”

Virgil opens his mouth. Closes it.

Logan sighs, but it’s less frustrated, more the kind of tone he takes when he’s forgiving of Virgil’s particular quirks and foibles, and he tosses Virgil’s pillow back. 

“You know very well that I am very interested in all your night nurse endeavors, as you are passionate about your career and I enjoy it when you are passionate,” Logan says, as if detecting any potential misgiving Virgil’s anxiety could possibly discern and twist into insecurities. “I also, yes, enjoy ranting about, as you put it, the height of human stupidity. However, I also value my time of sleep, and mentioned this. Remembering your behavior in undergrad, it is not like that was the first time you inadvertently woke me with some kind of fun fact you thought I would enjoy, and vice versa. Roman suggested doing this to swiftly demonstrate my… malcontent.”

“Roman did,” Virgil says.

“Yes, I know,” Logan says, “Never, ever tell him that I took his advice. But I believe we are now even. Do you agree?”

Virgil stares at him a couple moments. Logan is staring at him, very serious, very straight-faced. Everyone else would think he was straight-faced. But Virgil knows his boyfriend better than basically anyone else, so he can see the slight nervousness that this idea has backfired on him.

“Yeah, fine, we’re even,” Virgil says. Logan smiles, ever so slightly. “I keep forgetting that you aren’t on this schedule.”

Logan considers him, before he makes an attempt to flatten what Virgil is sure is some godawful bedhead. And Virgil, with a soft feeling fluttering in his chest at the look in Logan’s eyes, knows he’s forgiven for his earlier “waking-Logan-up-way-too-early” thing.

“Good evening,” he says, and leans over to peck Virgil on the lips. “Did you sleep well?”

“Yeah, pretty decent, I guess,” Virgil says. “How was school?”

Logan inhales, and it’s the specific kind of inhale Logan does whenever he’s about to start ranting about something, and Virgil tamps down his grin, because annoyed, ranting Logan was hilarious, and also a fantastic start to his day.

Well. Logan in general was a fantastic start to his day, except for when he was on a revenge plot that was hatched by Roman.

And so Virgil listens as Logan rants his way through the politics of academia as he makes them dinner/breakfast (tonight, it’s pasta; tomorrow, Virgil will make it, so it’ll probably be eggs) as Virgil kicks on the coffee machine, and ducks out briefly to brush his teeth.

He and Logan get to have a much more thorough hello kiss that way, one that almost gets carried away until Logan hears that the timer’s going of, and turns his attention back to their food. Virgil’s only a little sad about it.

It’s been strange, definitely, adjusting to their new life; Virgil as a night nurse (extra pay, to help his boyfriend-nearly-husband pay for his doctorate degree in astronomy) and Logan at school means that they have weird hours to be together. But, Logan had reasoned when it first started, a month and a half ago, didn’t most couples only have a few hours together in the mornings and evenings regardless? They were adjusting from their lives as college students; nearly every other couple who made the transition from college to the real world had to deal with the same realities. So it shouldn’t matter that Virgil was waking up as Logan was winding down, and vice versa. They’d make it work.

And they have, for the most part; Virgil likes his colleagues on the night shift, for the most part, especially a particularly peppy nurse named Patton, who he was planning on bringing over on their next mutual off day to have dinner with him and Logan and maybe Roman. He thinks Roman and Patton would get along really well. Maybe even romantically well, but he was keeping that to himself. And Logan was doing a fantastic job at school, idiots trying to scheme to climb the academic ladder notwithstanding. They were living their lives.

It was kind of great.

And so, even as Virgil was making sure that he was dressed in his scrubs and he had everything he needed for the night, as he leaned over to kiss a minty-mouthed Logan, in bed, reading a book before he’d go to sleep not long after Virgil would leave for his eleven o’clock shift, the fact that Logan had been a monster didn’t matter to him.

All the really great parts of him mattered way more.

Do you recover well from surgery? Judging by the two surgeries I've had, oh yeah. I was hyper as hell when I came home from getting tubes put in my ears as a little kid, even though the doctor said I'd be very sleepy. Then, after my cyst removal, I was put on very strong painkillers but was still warned it was going to be a painful recovery, when it totally wasn't. I literally only took painkillers the first day. What addictions have you had? Caffeine, technology. Would you change your name if you became famous? Nah. If Cupid were real, would you hire him to make someone love you? No. I don't want somebody forced to love me. Ever been to an auction? No. Which word(s) do you generally use to describe someone attractive? (e.g. “fit”, “sexy”) It kinda varies with gender. He still tends to win when he tries to come over, but sometimes I'll block him with my arm, and this spoiled brat will actually slap it a few times before walking away lmao. Could you afford to pay it off tomorrow if necessary? No. How many hours of sleep do you typically get each night? Is that enough to function or would you rather have more? Especially lately, I don't get nearly enough. Like at the time I'm answering this question, it's 4 AM, and I've been up for almost a couple hours. I struggle with falling asleep, I will ALWAYS wake up at least once in the night, and I jerk awake from nightmares regularly still. It's a big reason why I pretty much require naps. Does your house have a loft/basement? Are they functional or do you just use them for storage? We only have an attic. Do you suffer from road rage? What kind of thing tends to set you off or wind you up while driving? No. I'm way too timid of a driver to get that outwardly pissy about stupid people. I'd just judge them in silence, haha. Family History: ‘Jim’ was the result of an unwanted sexual act between her mother, a native american called ‘Speaks with Lillies’ and Colonel Albert Abberneth. Her mother ran from her tribe when she found out she was pregnant and raised you alone for 10 years, until her mother was found by a gang who threatened her and Jim, her mother was eventually killed and Jim ran for her life and hid. After a few days of walking Jim came across a cabin that housed an Army deserter, James ‘Jim’ O‘Drarey, he adopted her and raised Jim for 6 years until the army found him and killed him, Jim adopted his name and set out for revenge. She built up her body and practised brawling and grew to an astonishing 6′ 2″ she now goes form town to town fighting well, drinking alot, and winning all of her bets until shes found by Nora-Jane and taken to the Van Der Linde camp.

How They Joined: Jim was drinking in the Valentine Saloon on a cool summers night, there was talk of a new gang coming into town. ‘Great just what we fuckin need’ the whiskey here was alright, but not the best she’d tasted. It had been a quiet night, hardly a brawl until she saw some little girl walk in, long curls and a cheery demeanour. ‘She’ll get eaten alive in here and that ain’t none of my business’ through the night the little girl was really becoming popular, and stealing everything worth stealing, ‘damn she’s not half bad’ but she got caught, a stupid mistake nothing more. He was one hell of a big guy, but Jim was bigger, the man shouted bloody murder at this child and before Jim knew it she had crossed the bar and punched him out cold with one hit, “Anyone else wanna try me? Or her?” a shout that shook everyone to the core, except the girl. When Jim left she was there waiting for her, “You should come back with me to my family, you look lonely” ‘I am lonely, she’s sharp’ “Sure” and then she was taken back to the gang.

Arthur: She confides in Arthur about her past and how she feels about the gang members, he listens and doesn’t judge her, everyone needs someone to talk to about things, in the end she sides with Arthur indefinitely

Hosea: Hosea is her 2nd surrogate father, he begins to teach her to write, and she becomes extremely attached to him quickly, he brings out her personality and trust, she borrows his books to practice her reading but no one ever sees where she goes to read and they dare not follow her.

Romance

Her and Sean make quite the pair, she first met him after he’d been rescued and they had a major drinking competition,no one knows who won but they were both still awake and drinking when the others started rising for chores. He brings out the laughter and humour from Jim, something someone hasn’t been able to do for a long time, his accent gets her the most, her father was Irish and it held a special place in her heart. The others don’t know how Sean managed to tame Jim or even talk to her, they’re scared shitless of this 6 foot 4 galumphing woman, but Sean finds it amazing. He clings onto her for dear life, she picks him up and kisses him, and when she’s carrying a massive dead stag with one arm? Well, mark him down as scared AND horny, don’t even ask about when she’s chopping wood with her shirt off and a loose undershirt drenched in sweat underneath, she’ll give him so much affection and winks in public, and Sean returns each one of them tenfold. His death hits her hard, she runs into town and drinks until she’s blacked out, and she wakes up to the rain and Nora-Jane wide eyed to all the bodies around her, unconscious and beaten. “Lets go home, Jim”

I’m sure that’s going to happen before the end of the season anyway, lmao. and she didn’t seem to be particularly under duress from keeping it secret (aside from the Oshama Tricks interference), she just wanted to keep the Meltic Star status quo, and like, if that makes her happy?? I think that’s fine?? maybe it’s just my Extreme Meltic Star Bias talking though. anyway it was interesting to see this situation resolved differently from the way it usually is.

The Case for Redeemable Rax, a Three Part Saga

@absolxguardian​ this massive rambly essay started with our discussion of Galli vs. Tom Riddle as you will see 

it’s extremely long though and I’m publishing it mostly for personal reference, just to have it archived on my blog

also it might end up being character notes for fanfic so if it just gets repeated in narrative form somewhere else that’s why

Episode I: The Phantom Personality Disorder 

the warning signs Dumbledore missed with Tom Riddle were definitely meant to be of a personality disorder, most likely psychopathy. there are a ton of similarities between Galli & Palpatine’s first meeting and Tom’s first conversation with Dumbledore, but contextually it’s different since Palpatine is mega evil and Dumbledore (while flawed) is not. Dumbledore doesn’t threaten to kill Tom, and he certainly doesn’t start feeding him overt fascist ideology. but Tom is also unlike Galli because he’s in control of the conversation. he’s just a kid, but he’s charismatic and calculated and even when Dumbledore intimidates him into giving back the toys he stole, it’s suggested (or is it directly stated? I don’t quite remember) that Tom won that round — he got a demonstration of a wizard’s power to intimidate and control people, even if the person being controlled is himself. it’s not deterrence because he was just told he could one day have this power for himself.

so these are particular psychopath warning signs that we don’t get from Galli — or even adult Rax! we see him interact with Palpatine three times and we hear about his relationship to Kolob, and something that doesn’t happen (even though neurotypical people can learn to do this, even neurotypical kids) is Galli trying to leverage their power to his advantage

when he’s faced with someone who has power over him, Rax doesn’t know how to turn the tables or even stay afloat. with Palpatine, he never says or does anything outside of “yes, sir” and assorted synonyms. he wasn’t charismatic enough to charm Kolob or the other anchorites so he could get away with bullying other kids. 

those same other kids followed his lead when he left the orphanage, but it’s not because they let him have power over the others. he didn’t need to be that cunning to get them to leave -- he could have told them in good faith that they’d be taken to a better life off Jakku with him. when he’s waiting for Palpatine in a state of terror and false bravado, thinking, “he won’t kill me, I killed for him” -- this is almost certainly right after he killed the other children and it makes fear and desperation the primary motives. 

we learn that he burned down the orphanage before he left, and that Kolob didn’t know what happened to the other kids, so Galli must have done this on his own. it wasn’t something Palpatine would have needed him to do, and he never attacked the anchorites before then. it could have been a final act of spite, but he’s not smug or satisfied afterwards, he’s thinking about how he might be okay dying in this chair because it’s so comfortable, ha ha, it was all worth it for this, ha ha Ha. what I can imagine happening is that, after years of clinging to the hope of a better life, he was abruptly told he wouldn’t get it or would even be killed if he didn’t kill the rest of the children. he did the deed impulsively, in a panic, and then Palpatine left him alone on Jakku just long enough for him to wonder if he’d be played, if he killed his friends for nothing and that he was going to be next. he would've only had the anchorites to take out his rage and anguish on (he could easily blame them for everything), and Palpatine took him offworld after his rampage was over.

and you’d think maybe he’s just young and learned manipulative skills later, but when Sloane is about to kill him he actually has something he could use as leverage — the information about the Eclipse and the other ships sent to the Unknown Regions — but instead he weeps and begs for mercy. Sloane isn’t soft-hearted or empathetic and Rax would know this. seeing him suffer makes her revenge that much sweeter. so he’s not very cunning on instinct, when his life depends on it.

compare this to Palpatine leveraging his own vulnerability in the fight against Mace Windu to turn Anakin to the Dark Side. and I do think he was genuinely vulnerable and not entirely faking because Palpatine gambles with his life again with Luke and Vader, only he loses. his prologue scene with Rax in Book 3 reveals he’s perfectly aware of the risk he’s taking, because he hopes for high rewards.

Rax is just not very good at being an Evil Slimy Advisor. unlike a Wormtongue or a Jafar or a Lady Macbeth, he doesn’t even try to convince Sloane that she’s the one in control. he takes nominal steps towards this — making her Grand Admiral, promising her the throne — but they openly discuss the fact that she’s a puppet ruler, and when Sloane is like “so uh when are you going to drop this act and just be the Emperor or something” he’s like “no, no, I’ll keep telling everyone I support you, you’ll still be respected”. Sloane’s not pleased by the paltry offer, obviously she wants to rule for real and it feels like he’s not even trying to seduce her with power yes I think she genuinely gets pissed that he’s not being seductive enough; the culmination of all her hatred comes out as “did you really think I would join you after everything? you think I’m that cheap??? the fuck??”

conclusion for part one: Galli specifically averts the (pop science 101) psychopath trait of leveraging power from a position of weakness.

if he’s mentally disordered (and I think he is) the most believable diagnosis is actually ADHD. lmao yes I’m being serious here even though I’m biased since I’m projecting onto him: he’s disobedient and difficult to contain as a kid, kind of flaky and dreamy as well if he’s distracted by “stories”, he’s intense and comes off as wound-up or unstable, he’s impulsive, easily overstimulated by emotion or sensation, has hyperfixations that he turns to for stress relief, is rejection-sensitive (Sloane calling him “precious orphan” is enough to ruin his moment of triumph), and he can’t even keep his hands to himself when he talks to people

otherwise he acts like (and is) someone trained to have complete deference and submission to authority. he can’t manipulate, because authority is absolute and you either accept it to be good, or lash out at it to be, as Palpatine puts it, nasty and naughty.

Episode II: Attack of the Societal Factors

Rax’s fall to the Dark Side and subsequent abuses of power seem like a product of patriarchy. I don’t actually mean that he has an internal gender bias — he behaves in patriarchal ways (being a sugar daddy, condescending to people, refusing to yield status and control) but towards men and women, except in his apparent heterosexuality. Chuck Wendig generously makes Sloane a bit of an escapist fantasy for the gals, where people pretend not to respect her but deep down they all do. but he’s also continuing the long Star Wars tradition of being visibly patriarchal but not overtly sexist.

patriarchy isn’t exactly the same thing as male supremacy. male chauvinism is built into it, but the word itself means “rule of the father” and that describes the intersection of a hierarchical structure and a gendered chauvinism. not all men are fathers, not every patriarch is ruling a household or family (they can be a monarch, a CEO, a schoolteacher, a military commander), not all rulers in the role of “patriarch” are male. Rae Sloane behaves EXACTLY like a patriarch in a lot of ways, and even exercises what the Romans called “patria potestas”, the power a patriarch has over the lives of their family members. Sloane kills her subordinates, she kills her “daughter”, she kills loyal allies who she decides have outlived their use — because she acts as if it is her right to do so.

the way that Rax abuses his power is the way a lot of people do in our own patriarchal society — pushing boundaries to see what you can get away with. literally, he “tests” and goads Sloane as if he’s waiting for her to snap, he pushes the Empire into further chaos by “testing” them all, he terrorizes Armitage by telling him graphically what the Jakku orphans would do to him, even as he’s being sympathetic and trying to relate to the poor kid, and with Adea he acts in that dubious-consent area of not actively taking a “no” as a “yes” but not taking a lack of a “yes” to be a “no”. later we find out that she’s thoroughly enamored with him and eager for power, which sort of shows why Rax can be the way he is without being inherently evil: pushing boundaries doesn’t always backfire. if you’re being rewarded for it, just like Galli was rewarded for betraying and killing people under Palpatine, it can become a fixed pattern of behavior.

and that comes back to the anchorites cause this is the idea I had that turned into this essay — testing people’s boundaries is a very immature thing to do, but it’s not because kids are worse at being good people than adults. the average kid is good at doing things that are emotionally healthy for a kid. testing boundaries is something kids need to be willing to do. it’s not healthy for them to be overly deferential and unwilling to upset anyone. they have to learn a variety of social skills through trial and error. that’s why it’s okay that kids are kind of assholes — as long as they’re in the right environment where they can’t permanently traumatize each other or become locked into abusive patterns.

an environment where kids can’t test their boundaries against authority, by rebelling or being stubborn or throwing tantrums or anything like that, is a deeply unhealthy environment, and foundational to patriarchy. the younger you are, the more you’re at the mercy of adults, and kids need to accept some adult authority to stay safe, but it’s also really dangerous if a kid will do anything an adult tells them to, so they need to have an instinct to push back. and kids also need this to become healthy adults with agency and self-respect. adults aren’t healthy if they're “skilled” at deferring to “because I told you so” or “those are just the rules” or “don’t talk back to me” or “you’re not showing enough respect” from other adults. they’re especially not healthy if this is wielded through religious abuse, where they are forced to accept a divine patriarch whose will goes unquestioned. 

if you demand absolute obedience, if people can’t push against authority (a correct and healthy outlet for fear or anxiety or frustration), they end up with this grab bag of options: be a doormat (and likely be self-destructive or self-loathing), take it out on their peers, or take it out on people they have power over. these are adaptive strategies that a majority of people living in a patriarchy have to some extent.

Galli stood out from the other kids, in ways anchorites clearly believed were bad and going to lead him to the Dark Side, but unlike Tom Riddle, they weren’t real warning signs, and unlike Anakin and Ben Solo, it seems like he didn’t have any positive support systems that he had to reject in order to fall to the Dark Side

so he comes across as, not a troubled child, but an unfortunately gifted one. he has exceptionally high cultural intelligence. he’s brilliant at honing in on the core beliefs of an ideology — but patriarchy and fascism have core beliefs that look appalling when brought to the light. he captures the essence of the Empire, the thing Rae Sloane is supposedly so passionate about, and it absolutely disgusts her. and Rax can’t understand what he’s doing wrong. he's figured out exactly what the Empire is all about, why should he keep it to himself? isn’t Sloane an elevated mind? well, it’s all true, but he shouldn’t say it. 

Rax isn’t manipulating Sloane to get what he wants -- when it’s not working out he specifically refuses to interfere. he’s manipulating Sloane because it’s an act of self-expression, of artistic creation; he thinks of it as composing an opera. his creativity lies in faithfully recreating and perfecting the ideology and culture he was victimized with. Palpatine made him believe the abuse was good for him. and for Rax to be cunning, for him to hide his true intentions, he’d have to understand that nobody wants to be abused and manipulated. and apparently, understanding that would be enough for him to realize it’s just unconditionally bad for people (instead of “sharpening some blades, and ruining others”), therefore it was bad for him, and therefore he’s a horrifyingly broken unloved wretch

Episode III: Revenge of the Horrifyingly Broken Unloved Wretch

because he does start to realize this on Jakku, as he’s insisting to himself that Sloane’s rejection was just a fluke and a disappointment, then moments later he’s facing down Kolob and laying into him with righteous indignation. he starts wanting to get rid of Brendol Hux, while feeling protective of Armitage. he stops admiring Palpatine through his hate — he starts to embrace disdain and disgust for the man. and he clearly starts to more actively hate himself because it all comes spilling out as he’s dying. 

just a few months after one (1) woman rejects him because he’s simply being too much of an asshole, he starts to realize that he’s been crapped on and strung along for his whole life. it’s still hard to say if he could have really recovered. plenty of his actions were already unforgivable. but Darth Vader took years to process the fact that his son was alive. and in those years, Vader continued to do evil things, and if he’d been killed before RotJ, it would have been perfectly justified. so Rax deserved what he got, and his evil plans needed to be foiled, and I would have thrown in a kick in the nuts if it were up to me.

but suppose we redefine redeemability not as a true/false binary, but instead a variable measure of how quickly someone can convert good influences into good attitudes, after bad influences gave them bad attitudes. we’ll call it their Redemption Quotient. their RQ, so to speak. just for fun. 

heroes (in the moral alignment sense) by nature have a higher than average RQ. they’re not heroic because they’re flawless or infallible, but because they absorb good influences faster than most -- Finn gets over being a stormtrooper as soon as something in his heart tells him it’s wrong. Han overcomes his defensive selfishness as soon as he meets some pure good cinnamon rolls to protect. Luke gets over his nihilism as soon as he meets a pure good cinnamon roll to protect. anti-heroes and anti-villains fall in the middle of the spectrum, and true villains by nature fall below that.

all things considered, Rax might have a high RQ for a villain.
