A doodle I managed to finish for the coven event- I don't necessarily have a story or AU tied to this one, except that Marius couldn't decide what sort of flowers to bring home for Daniel so he decided on all of them.

More fun for the @deromanuscoven Spring Event 😈
Day 4: I want only your love or death.
Written by @herbeloved82 and me.
Find it on Ao3 here!
He could read it in Louis’ mind. He’d lost him again. Armand knew that Louis was never his to begin with, but over the years, they’d grown comfortable with one another. But now, there was a distance between them that Armand had felt before.
It didn’t help that Lestat was more than happy to be open with his lavish displays of affection for his all too indifferent partner, but the evening that neither Lestat nor Louis had so much as shown their faces before midnight, that was when Armand knew that he was alone once again.
Lestat had descended from his ivory tower to grace them with his presence. Even without the ability of reading his thoughts any longer, Armand didn’t have to pry to see the Prince’s smug expression, but it was the scent of something unnatural still running through his veins that told him what had happened. Louis slunk down to read in the library several minutes later, carrying that same unnatural scent.
Armand had smelled it a handful of times at court - more and more, now that their doctors in residence had time to experiment with perfecting the delicate balance. He knew that the open offer was there, yet, Armand never sought out Seth or Fareed to try it, but now, watching the way that Lestat draped himself across Louis’ lap, their cheeks still flushed, Armand had decided now was the time.
Only, there was no one with which he could. Not with Louis back to being Lestat’s pet or Daniel taking time alone in Rio, now that he seemed well enough to do so. That was when he overheard Chrysanthe’s voice. He glanced up, peering down the hall that led to the salon from which the sound of Marius’ laugh drifted over the sound of a crackling fire.
Armand’s eyes narrowed fractionally as he listened closer to the words. It was nothing of import - nothing that he and Marius hadn’t discussed countless times in the past. History. Politics. And yet, as Marius laughed again, Armand could hear the soft rustle of fabric as one of them must have gestured or moved closer.
Part of him wanted to look into the room, to walk in as though he hadn’t noticed that they were even there, but instead, he simply sat on the other side of the library, glaring at Lestat, who was now nipping at Louis’ jaw. It was a battle he would never win, for once Louis’ attention was elsewhere, not even the end of the world could draw him out of his shell.
And yet, there was the smallest crack in Louis’ facade as he tipped his head closer to Lestat’s for a kiss.
That was enough.
Armand stood quickly and stormed out of the room, leaving the library, but he stopped on his way to the salon when he saw Seth and Fareed approaching from the other side of the hall. Dressed alike, as always, it was Seth who carried an ornate looking wooden box and Fareed glancing toward the salon, from which the sound of Marius and Chrysanthe’s conversation continued.
Seth and Armand’s eyes met for only a moment, but it was Armand who looked away first, shying away from the weight of his dark gaze. Armand drifted to one side of the hall, yet they did not move to pass him, instead entering the salon before Armand could even see inside of it.
Fareed’s voice immediately joined Marius and Chrysanthe’s, and from his tone, he seemed pleased with what he saw. “Marius, Chrysanthe,” a brief pause, in which Armand could practically feel himself bristling. “It’s good to see you about, we were getting worried. We need our prime minister after all.”
“It is my duty to help our Prince.” Marius said with a detached voice that had little in common with the laugh that still echoed in Armand’s mind. It was like something switched off inside Marius, but the difference was clear. Marius had no interest in small talk with the doctor, yet the sound of his laugh with Chrysanthe told another story entirely.
Armand had always been his own worst enemy, and right now his mind was conjuring the worst possible scenario. He knew what was in the nice box Seth carried, what else could it be if not the triple cursed hormones?
Armand found himself grinding his teeth. He could taste the metallic taste of his blood in his mouth as he imagined Marius accepting the box from Seth, a gentle and enigmatic smile on his too expressive face as he nodded towards Chrysanthe.
He could see her delicate hand wrapped around Marius’ arms as they walked to his bedrooms, where they would - no. Absolutely no, he decided, he wasn’t going to stay around to see them leaving together. He was done for the night.
Those were his thoughts when he walked away and left the main floor with its too many happy couples.

Hey, thank you so much for answering all my questions! It helps! Curious about you saying "he had been very secretive, which created frustration for Louis and Claudia about their nature as vampires". In the movie he says he doesn't know anything because his maker never told him. Do we think this is a lie then? Is it a lie in the books? Do you recommend all the books or only select few? Are they all canon? I'm def interested in L&L centric stuff (don't think all books are?). Anyway, thanks again!
Hey, thank you so much for answering all my questions! It helps!
You're welcome 🌷
In the movie he says he doesn't know anything because his maker never told him. Do we think this is a lie then? Is it a lie in the books?
Yes and No!
TL:DR; I think some of us Lestat fans forgive him for keeping secrets from Louis and Claudia, it was partially for their safety.
Tumblr media
Well, when Anne Rice wrote IWTV, she didn't yet have much of a backstory for Lestat; since she didn't know the secrets he kept from Louis, neither did Lestat 😅 So I would say, no, he wasn't lying then (technically). If that was the only book in the series, then he was not lying.
Anne Rice also wrote the '94 IWTV movie script, and at that time, she HAD written Lestat's backstory in The Vampire Lestat, so at that point Lestat knew secrets that he withheld from Louis and Claudia. In fact, Tom Cruise had read the first 3 books in the series, so his performance is informed from this immersion in the lore; you can see the simmering beneath the surface as Louis asks him questions, trying to get anything out of him, and Lestat evading as much as he can, until he can't evade anymore and bursts out in frustration and pain. He KNOWS and wants to tell him so badly!
(Hit the jump, cut for length)
So in the movie, Lestat is lying to Louis and Claudia by saying he doesn't know the secrets, but it's kind of a partial lie, because his maker, Magnus, gave Lestat very little information. Magnus didn't tell Lestat about the origin of the vampires or what their place was in a religious context. Magnus just wanted to leave behind an heir to his wealth and power before he died.
However, Lestat did learn the origin story of the vampires from Marius. In order for Anne to solve the problem of why Lestat withheld this information from Louis and Claudia, she made a retcon: Marius threatens Lestat that if he tells the secrets to anyone, Marius would punish him, because he can't have anyone know where he is, which could threaten the safety of the entire vampire species.
Tumblr media
Marius threatens to crush Lestat to death or set him on fire with pyrokinesis, and that this punishment would include anyone Lestat told the secrets to 😭. So it's partly out of safety that Lestat won't tell Louis and Claudia those secrets.
Tumblr media
Marius underscores that Lestat's fledglings might not be ready for this knowledge anyway, it could be "a horror to them," so in not telling them, Lestat is also protecting them from the potential psychological damage.
Tumblr media
I think there's also some fanon that Lestat was afraid that in telling Louis and Claudia these secrets, that they might leave him, and that's a giant separate discussion, whether that counts as a form of abuse to keep them against their will. By telling them the secrets, they would have the knowledge of where to start looking for other vampires 😭 Which, again, is a safety thing for Lestat partly, because they were pretty weak as far as vampires go, and therefore vulnerable to more powerful vampires' attacks. And there are worse things than death for vampires.
Do you recommend all the books or only select few? Are they all canon?
I usually recommend reading all the books, even though there are some I prefer over others. How do you know what you will/won't like without trying them? Technically anyone can make the argument that all of the books are canon, but I treat the series like a buffet, as many book fans do, and so not everyone agrees which books are Truly Canon 😅
Tumblr media
But in general, if I had to choose, the first 3 used to be referred to as the Trilogy™ (derogatory), those are the most universally-loved, and some fans find that Anne Rice strayed from the parts that made canon so delicious after the third book. I would recommend reading them in order of publication because that's the order Anne Rice explored the stories and characters (even though the timelines do jump around and there are interesting discrepancies between different character's accounts of the same events!)
I'm def interested in L&L centric stuff (don't think all books are?).
Not all the books are L&L centric, but they often have a moment here and there even in books that are not specific to them, like Tale of the Body Thief. So, some shippers will skim through a book just to find any mention of their ship. Knowing the context of L&L's meetups in TOBT definitely enhances the flavor of their scenes together, so I would recommend reading that one, even though it's not considered canon for some fans 🤷 Delicious angst! The Feels! But that is one of the more Problematic books in the series, so it's up to you whether you want to give that one a try.

“Marius and David not welcome” is sort of funny to me in the grand scheme of this series, like I get the basis of this argument is “well they’re both creeps” but to that point I’d recommend a reevaluation of the entire series, particularly its cast of characters.
Tumblr media
They are all guilty of some manner of abuse. They all commit horrific atrocities. And they moralize over these atrocities. Like. That is the principle upon which the entire series is built. Can these literal monsters ever be redeemed?
When you read Interview with the Vampire did you feel some extreme discomfort with the father/lover dynamic between Louis and Claudia? (which was excised from the show I might add) That locked-door uneasiness is the essence of southern/gothic fiction. Read V.C. Andrews. Read Shirley Jackson. Read William Faulkner. The taboos, the ick if you will, is the foundation of gothic horror. You are meant to feel this. It is an essential function of the genre.
Like- every one of Anne’s books that followed IwtV had to essentially compete with the gothic genius that is the invention of Claudia and the sickness that is her story. It’s not all effective, but it’s there in almost every work. TVL has Lestat and Gabrielle’s incestuous relationship, QotD has Armand’s abuse (yes, abuse) of Daniel. For god’s sake, TTotBT features Lestat committing a rape, and I know that you all know this. Yet no matter how you try to headcanon that scene away, it will always be significant because its very function is to service the larger themes of bodily autonomy and consent within that specific novel.
Killing in fiction is benign. We are desensitized to it. And we know this. Killing means nothing, so the narrative must work harder to find a violence that can demonstrate evil to a desensitized audience. There is a reason that these books are shelved in fiction as opposed to genre. By design, their difficulty is inherently literary. You’re uncomfortable? Good. Then Anne achieved her goal.
But if you’re looking to proselytize and transform the work into something with a black and white morality system then you have come to the wrong series. You are gatekeeping yourself from a nuanced understanding of the material. David and Marius are as bad as everyone else. The main trio are not exempt from this reading. That was the point. They are all bad. They are all complex. It is meant to be difficult to parse. Engage with it or don’t, but you are deluding yourself if you think that these two main characters are somehow going to vanish from the tv show.
(And again, AMC is going to strip away the most challenging character traits anyway)

Anne Rice Vampires Ranked by What It Would Be Like to Get Chomped by Them
Armand – Hypnotic, irresistible. You’ll stray into a beautiful garden and never leave.
Louis – Tender, quick and painless. His victims always love him.
Bianca – A class act. Never spills a drop. She’ll tell you a joke right when she leans in.
Lestat – Who needs life when you have that 1,000-watt smile embedded in your jugular?
Marius – Hates waste and unnecessary suffering.
Akasha – The primal fount can never be slaked.
Khayman – A total sweetheart. You can’t even be mad at him.
Pandora – Super sexy until she rips out your heart and sucks it dry like a Capri Sun.
Daniel – Starts out gentle then gets hedonistic and out of control. Might rip your head off accidentally. Sorry, Boss.
David – Terribly sorry, it’s nothing personal, you understand.
Gabrielle – Will take you down like a lioness with a goddamn wildebeest.
Mael – Marius is so disgusted that you let yourself get killed by this Druid himbo.
Claudia – Uncanny, plus you just know she is into some freaky shit.
Santino – That mildewy smell never really goes away.
Maharet – Hopefully she waits until you’re dead before she steals your eyeballs.
Mekare – [telepathic screaming]
