I thought of this headcanon for Joe and I had to write it before I forget. I’m also sure that someone else has thought of it but oh well!

Joe is a HUGE comic book nerd. He’s been a fan of them since they came out. I’m sure he has a ton of different comic books scattered around at all their different safe houses. I’m sure in the past he has even written and drawn some of his own comics. (He definitely based a character or two on his found family.) He obviously loves Marvel and DC. At some point in his life he definitely had drinks with Stan Lee.

I also think he definitely watches all the comic book movies and tv shows with Nile. They almost always get tickets to an early showing unless they are on a mission. If they are on a mission they make sure to see the movie immediately when they get home, She always used to see the movies in the theater with her brother and now she gets to do it with her new brother. They decided at some point make the rest of the team sit down and have a marathon of them. Joe’s favorite character is Moon Knight. Nicky loves Daredevil. Andy’s favorite character is Wonder Woman (Especially after hearing that maybe she was the inspiration for her). Niles favorite character is Iron Man. Bookers favorite character is the Scarlet Witch.

I think my silliest Mildly Autistic Nicky headcanon is that yes, he adores spices and seasonings and authentic flavours, but very occasionally (like once every six months) he will want a Plain Food day where he eats nothing but pastina in brodo and bread and butter and other boring things and everyone goes along with it. Joe is happy because Nicky is happy, Andy and Booker will eat anything if it sits still long enough. Nile was surprised but anything Nicky cooks is nourishing even if it's not mind-blowing.

The menu resumes as normal the next day.

(Actually I don't know if this is silly or not. I just like the idea. I would also imagine that they've eaten their fair share of fucking atrocious meals over the centuries, stuff that not even Nicky's skill could save, so anything is better than ship's hard tack, tripe or rotten rice.)

I lowkey hope Joe and Nicky's introduction in TOG 2 is chaotic. Like, Nile and Andy are meeting with an important associate of Copley's and they burst in fresh from a mission/stakeout. Neither of them have slept in three days, their eyes are bloodshot, they definitely need a shower, and they are so overtired to the point of being delirious. They can barely stand up. When Andy introduces them and she's poised as ever, Nicky definitely checks out the guy and he's like "oooh oooh oooh". Andy dismisses them right after that obviously.

I love when folks ask me Fandom Old questions and I get to be like "Yeah, uh, that's from my old online RP group, no it's not canon at all, yes we just made it up, no we did not claim it was canon but the mid to late aughts were a strange time."

It's honestly a shock to realize how often this has happened. I mentioned earlier that Reno's fanon surname came from this same group, but that's not even the half of it. I once made a bunch of screenshot manips based on the most ridiculous ships anyone could think of—someone slapped a random line of text onto one of them and to this day it's used as a "cringe FF7 fandom" meme. I saw it on the twits a bit back and almost fell out of my goddamn chair.

If you've ever heard Scarlet referred to with the surname "West," read about Tseng fighting with metal fans, seen Elena's older sister being called Anna instead of Emma, come across Vincent portrayed as having a PhD in spite of being a Turk, or caught references somewhere to Grimoire experimenting on Vincent as a child, that started with this group. That was us.

One of the funniest examples of this, for me specifically, is that we don't actually know which arm Veld is missing? The fandom generally goes with his left because that's how I drew him in the first picture of the guy ever posted on devart way back in 2005, but it may very well be his right. I've seen people offer "proof" that it's his right based on a scene in the opening cutscene, but you can't tell there either, and with BC's graphics there's literally no way to tell on his sprite.

Hell, this year we found out everyone's assumed timeline of the Kalm fire is wrong, and that's our fault too because we made some assumptions about Felicia's age for an LJ RP that were entirely wrong. She's around Zack's age, not Sephiroth's! She's old enough to run with a terrorist group in BC, but she was a child when Kalm burned, and that happened in 1997—we know this because NPCs in Rebirth literally refer to the fire in Kalm having happened "just ten years ago." Veld has only had his prosthetic for three years when BC starts. (This also implies that, contrary to popular belief, Veld may actually be younger than Vincent. Vincent may have been the senior partner, and that's why he was sent to Nibelheim alone while Veld was left at headquarters.)

We were really wrong on this! But we were working with what we had. There's no canon evidence for the vast majority of these things (the most notable exclusion here is Vincent being educated) but we weren't claiming there was. We were filling gaps, and canon was so sparse that we had a lot of gaps to fill. So if it turns out that Veld lost his right arm, then I'll just have to start drawing him that way—because losing his left was never canon.

Tragically, there's nothing any of us can do to make people stop assuming these things are canon at this point; there aren't a lot of us still in the fandom, and it's not like any of us have those old chatlogs anymore. People from this RP group have DIED since those days. It's been over 20 years since most of us met, and around 15 since most of us were in a public fannish space together.

"Prove it," people say, and I literally can't. Do you know how many computers I've been through since then? 75% of the platforms we used no longer exist. This all started on a BBCode forum! There is no proof!

But...there's no evidence any of these things are canon, either, so maybe think about that? The Kalm fire, Tseng's weapon of choice, Veld's arm, character surnames—none of these are retcons because there was no lore there to retcon. We made it up for our specific purposes, and it escaped containment in an era when there was really no way to do online contact tracing.

It's just one of the weirdest feelings in the world to see younger folk arguing about A or B point in canon, about X or Y retcon—referencing something my friends and I thought up at like 10 o'clock at night on a now-defunct IM client in August of 2005, because we needed something to refer back to for a specific scene in an RP and the source material had nothing to offer.

Absolutely fucking bonkers.

I was going through your speculation tag a little while ago and saw that one of your headcanons for Tangled is that the royal family's surname is Solaris (which I love love love !!). idk it fits in so well with how sun-centred corona is and all. and it's pretty teehee

I've always been a little bit frustrated by the fact that we don't really have a lot of characters with canonical surnames. to be fair a lot of things about tts annoy me... but we don't need to get into that. i know it's not particularly important to the story but it's important to me LOL, names are a powerful thing !!

So I was wondering if you had any surname headcanons for the other characters? apart from Eugene and Lance, of course (shout out to them though </3 my scrunklies)

Aww, thanks! I've always been fond of using Solaris for them, simply because of that sun connection! (To be fair "der Sonne," which many people use because of the series, is also related to the sun.)

My headcanon name for the Captain is Dominik Collins, which would make Cassandra's last name Collins, too. (Granted, I gave him that name long before the series came out, and I might have made it different if I'd thought it up post-series.)

I don't really have last names for anyone else, but if pressed, I'm sure I could come up with something I was satisfied with. For example, Quirin and Varian would be given a Greek last name, like, Makris or Galanis. Kiera and Catalina would have the same last name, which they chose together (and then later, they obviously both become Schnitz).

Oh! But did you know that Feldspar's last name is canonically Wilipeg, and Old Lady Crowley's first name is Hortense? So there's two more full names for you. Plus, Attila's full name is Attila Buckethead (though I have no personal headcanons as to what his non-ruffian name would be).

In fact, here! Here's a list of all the names that @darkprince-eugene collected. Most of them have been looked up for meaning, but the project kind of fell by the wayside after a point.

Andromache is a Greek name, and Andy predated the Scythians by thousands of years. Also "Andromache" means "fighter of men" and the Scythians were famous for their mounted warriors.

So I imagine Lykon dying and reviving and dreaming of these ferocious women, for decades, and of course he needs to call them something even if it's just in his own head, so one of them becomes "Andromache the Scythian" because have you seen her? And then they all finally meet and have a good laugh about it and he and Quynh start calling her Andromache as a joke, and then it becomes a habit, and you know she really kind of likes it, and then Lykon dies, which wasn't supposed to be possible, and she stays Andromache the Scythian because that means he's still part of the team, even the new ones who never met him will carry him with them.

(Now, you might very well ask, why does Lykon name her in Greek? I am working on a headcanon for that as well, one that is at least vaguely historically plausible, because some of us actually know how to use Wikipedia, Greg.)

(Quynh is the only other person in the world who knows Andy's original name. When Andy realizes she's mortal again, she thinks about how it'll be after she dies, no one remembering who she was so long ago, just Quynh screaming her name at the bottom of the ocean with no one to hear.)

don't get me started on the booker apologists who think that his being "queer" (because Greg Rucka said he's essentially bi and on the ace spectrum in a private discord chat, lol) absolves him of having a self-centered, amatonormative world-view.

the very fact that he thinks nicky and joe's queer romantic love shielded them from all other forms of loss/trauma/etc just reinforces the fact that his personal version of amatonormativity is not contingent on heteronormativity!! I don't know why people are choosing to be deliberately obtuse about this very valid point you made (other than woobifying an angsty white dude, as usual.)

I did stumble across that and I found the way people were treating that as canon very strange. I amended a post where I called Booker straight with this:

I am now aware that Greg Rucka has in a discord message confirmed Booker as queer. This is not canonical, however. It’s very not publicly available word of god. Until it is included in the next movie, it is not movie canon and I will continue to call him straight, because to the movie watching fan, that’s what he reads as.

It is even less canon than authors tweeting out that a character is x sexuality or confirming it in an interview - and I don't personally care that much what the author says outside the story. I find it very strange that people are weaponising booker's 'queerness' to absolve him of his sins. Like, queer people can be shitty, too.

I'm not sure why people are so desperate for him to be so when the film is chock-full of interesting and dynamic queer characters, but I digress. Just because Booker being bi and ace is Rucka's headcanon doesn't make it canon as it is not in the film - if it's your headcanon, that's cool, but Booker is not canonically queer. There is nothing that implies that he is bi or ace - I would have noticed, particularly the latter.

And you're completely right. Being queer does not prevent people from being amatonormative!

This is a really poignant ask. I think that what a lot of people disagreeing with my interpretation comes from is these people do not understand what amatonormativity is. It's not jealousy, it's devaluing all relationships outside of monogamous romantic relationships. It is implicit in Booker's words and is unlikely conscious on his part, but it comes out in this canonical line: 'you two always had each other!' Romantic relationships do not stop grief, or racism, or homophobia, or - millions of other horrible things nicky and joe have experienced.

All my posts really stemmed from a deep frustration at Booker's just absolutely selfish narrow tunnel vision - because Nicky and Joe lost their first families (their parents/siblings/nieces+nephews), experienced centuries of discrimination, AND lost quynh.

anyway booker's issues are not nicky and joe's responsibility - they have their own recovery to worry about.

there's no way that in over 900 years of marriage, nicky hasn’t patiently explained to him that, as far as flavor and texture is concerned, if an animal fat (like, say, goose) needs to be substituted, it should be with a different kind of animal fat (like tallow, lard, or even butter), instead of a plant-derived oil. like olive.

joe knows this simple culinary fact. he just keeps forgetting.

The thing about Booker, is that he has a talent to annoy you

Ever since you two first met, the french man showed you that temper that would just drive you crazy, unstoppably

It is as if he takes pleasure in contradicting you, and that of course, makes you want to kill him

Which you actually did, more than once

Everytime the team gets together for a job, he presents you that convinced smile of his and with irony, says how much he has missed you

You absolutely cannot work in plans together, since you always end up at each other's throats, more arguing than anything else

You do work fine together in the field, but you strongly believe that is because killing people do not require for you both to actually communicate

If you had a huge fight, you would give each other threatening looks later while sharing a meal with the others

Andy is annoyed by your bickering at each other. She is the boss and when she says so, you both stop fighting at the very same instant and do whatever she tells you to

Nicky and Nile mostly just roll their eyes at all the swearing and argument you have with each other, from time to time muttering to themselves how you both are such childs when it comes to one another

Joe finds it funny. He can't stop laughing whenever you both start screaming, shouting your lungs out because of something probably stupid, like who would get to go in first at the job

When Nicky asks him about it, he just says the fun is in the fact that you both don't see what's right in your faces

Occasionally, after a harsh job or just a bad day for both, you would allow yourselves to share a drink together in silence, just hoping for the alcohol to kick in soon

Whenever Booker spoke about his sons and all the grief he still felt after so much time, you wouldn't be able to deny to yourself how bad you felt for him and you would hug him, comfort him, even though you would later pretend that never happened

And he would pretend it either, even though that meant a lot to him. The fact that you cared

For some time, you would give yourselves a break from each other. But then, all of the sudden, the fighting and screaming would come back and in Nile's words, "everything would go back to normal"

And Joe woud laugh again at that and when it happened, Andy would be the one to ask why he was laughing, how he could find that funny. And for that, looking at his boss, he would say

"Me and Nicky were exactly like that in the beginning. Don't you remember it, boss?"
