i still think a lot about how technically, it's implied Anubis and Walt started dating each other before they asked out Sadie, and if Sadie had said she wasn't interested they would have gone "Entirely fair have a nice day" and proceed to just go continue to date each other.
Cause like, that was the entire thing. They decided that themselves. That things would work best if they were together (as in both physically sharing a body and also relationship-wise). The "asking Sadie about it" part was secondary. If she had said no, they would have stayed together, because among other things Walt would kind of die if they didn't. Walt and Anubis are technically the first gay couple in the Riordanverse. AND they're in a polyamorous relationship with Sadie. Why does no one talk about them ever.

Dealing with Dragons: Cimorene sketch ^_^
Been re-listening to Dealing with Dragons recently (anyone who knows me knows I will not shut up about how formative this series was for me re: many things but mostly dragons) and so I got the urge to draw Cimorene again (I sketched her like a year or so ago, but can't find it, so I thought a redesign with my new style was perfect!)
Also, my fav book reviewer (I have one of those now?? What??) Just covered the first book of the series, so if you want to check out a great reviewer AND my favorite book of all time, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMaKkwHQQKM
Not me trying to speak into existence an Enchanted Forest Chronicles graphic novel series that I get to adapt, whatttt noooo... ^_-

everything sam is doing to "save" dean from the mark is predicated on the belief that dean can't handle the mark. that he will lose. that he's not strong enough.

i have to say seeing how popular jem is now, knowing he hasn't always been, is SO reassuring and relieving. not because other characters aren't great or have good values, but because it means jem's standout qualities – things like kindness, compassion, gentleness, being thoughtful – are being appreciated and seen as more important and that's SUCH a good thing. especially knowing ya's history of pushing forward the toxic-cocky-mysterious bad boy agenda… we're finally putting qualities like kindness above that, which is a really positive step forward. i know it's more nuanced than this, and tsc's characters are far more nuanced (jem's sole trait isn't being kind, for instance) but he wasn't always appreciated this much and as a longtime jem fan i truly love to see it. i grew up reading books where the mc always went for the mysterious bad boy character – ruder, testy, provocative – and often these characters were more popular because being kind was seen as 'boring' or meant you could only ever be in the friendzone. jem was one of the first characters i read who had this really horrible backstory, but throughout everything was genuinely just kind. it's really wonderful to see so many people appreciating that :)

He didn't think he was good enough. He thought he was a bad person. He didn't think he'd be worth anything. He blew the horn because he didn't know what else to do. And the Heroes still came. His face said it all.

tlhod’s Gender Situation as written in 1968 (published in 1969) was about a man from Earth who goes to another planet inhabited by alternate-bio ambisexual humans who are completely like Earth humans in every other respect. The man from Earth at first expects them to be like men in a way that’s recognizable to him, and that expectation causes him some struggles in relating to them, but he then comes to accept them on their own terms.
An updated look at that Gender Situation might be about a nonbinary person from Earth who goes to another planet inhabited by alternate-bio ambisexual humans who are completely like Earth humans in every other respect. The nonbinary person from Earth at first expects them to be like nonbinary people in a way that’s recognizable to them, and that expectation causes them some struggles in relating to them, but they then come to accept them on their own terms.
Mutatis mutandis since “nonbinary” is a way, way broader category than “man” (hello multigenders I love you) but people who have never heard of gender are going to have a different, for lack of a better word, thing going on than someone who is familiar with a gender binary and has rejected it.
(I also think having a normal earth queer person interact with members of a fantasy gender/lack of gender would be interesting. Real deal meets metaphor. It’s like if an actual trans woman met Jadzia Dax.)

In 2011 I drastically reduced my DWJ book intake to dripfeed levels, so it was only in the 2024 new year that I finally decided to read Deep Secret. My god - out of all her books this seems targeted at me personally? Stressed late-20-somethings, making fools of oneself in vicinity of fav authors, artist alleys?? Also, blatant unmistakable LGBT-rep??? I can't believe I slept on this one for so long!!! Definitely putting it on the upper tiers of my DWJ bookshelf.
Anyway, here's some designs I've whipped up for the characters! As always, might tweak 'em if ever I draw more in the future, but that's what's fun about figuring out character designs. Rob in particular is a joy to me.
btw Zinka plsplspls let me table with you

there obv IS a prevalent and aggravating trend of stories having an antagonist who correctly identifies a flaw in society and aims to fix it but also commits atrocities along the way that the narrative claims to undermine the entire goal and then when the hero defeats them it is in the name of the status quo - but people sometimes point to legend of korra as an example of this which is so annoying bc like man how can you not understand a show written for children. every single season ends with korra defeating the villains and then saying "they had some points tho!" and then changing the status quo to address the flaw the villain identified

i find it unreasonably funny when people hc raven listening to like sad emo rock or smth like that (honestly tbh it's so valid), when raven canonically is a swiftie.
and what's even better is the fact that dexter is also a swiftie and i think they both canonically sing a bit of enchanted together.
