In 2011 I drastically reduced my DWJ book intake to dripfeed levels, so it was only in the 2024 new year that I finally decided to read Deep Secret. My god - out of all her books this seems targeted at me personally? Stressed late-20-somethings, making fools of oneself in vicinity of fav authors, artist alleys?? Also, blatant unmistakable LGBT-rep??? I can't believe I slept on this one for so long!!! Definitely putting it on the upper tiers of my DWJ bookshelf.

Anyway, here's some designs I've whipped up for the characters! As always, might tweak 'em if ever I draw more in the future, but that's what's fun about figuring out character designs. Rob in particular is a joy to me.

Diana Wynne Jones does such a good job of capturing different kinds of people. we've all known someone like Maree or Nina but so rarely are they portrayed in fiction, let alone with any nuance.

I am working my way through an audiobook Deep Secret (Diana Wynne Jones) and the first half is pretty much ho ho ho, parallel universe hijinks at a sci fi con, who even notices? with a side of rupert, wizard of outstanding ability and understanding of the deep workings of the universe, also a bit of a prat who's in thoroughly over his head, ho ho ho, with another side of maree and nick cousin hijinks, and... it's decent, yeah? A human element that the puzzles work through. The switching viewpoints work great for increasing the mystery, where you get a glimpse of what the other side is doing and go Huh? and pick up context later. Something of that weird liminal cozy-but-dissociated feeling at a con.

AND THEN THE SECOND HALF HITS AND IT IS SO FUCKING RAW.

Neil Gaiman : I’m in Deep Secret as Nick. The scene that Nick eats the breakfast twice is something that Diana and Mary Gentle did to me to amuse themselves one breakfast.

JC: Because you were just that out of it?

NG: I was at a writers’ conference, Milford, this sort of writers’ thing. You had to get up for breakfast because if you didn’t, there was no food until one o’clock when lunch was served. I was fine the first few days, but by Thursday I was getting up in my sleep, going in, and eating these incredibly—

MA: Sleep-eating?

NG: It was, and they were horrible. These greasy, fried eggs that came out in trays. Apparently I would sit there mechanically eating my breakfast and I [one day] finished and Diana and Mary—Mary hadn’t wanted her breakfast because it was so horrible, so she put it in front of me and I carried on eating. And apparently halfway through, I looked up very puzzled and I said, “I’ve eaten this breakfast before and I didn’t like it the first time.”

Deep Secret - Diana Wynne Jones

I have finished reading Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones. As expected from Diana Wynne Jones it is well-written.

The story is about magicians who take care of different worlds, called magids. The main character has to take care of Earth and another world ruled by a paranoid emperor who fears being killed. It doesn’t help as gets killed, the problem is he was of course also paranoid that his children would kill him, so he made sure almost no one knew who his children are and that children didn’t know that he is their father.

The main character is left with the dangerous and difficult task of finding an hair. A good portion of action takes place at a fantasy/sci-fi convention, because where else one can find a better place to pretend one is a normal person when one is a magician?

Nice story, with a well done intrigue and well written characters. The characters although are faced with difficult problems, are resourceful in the face of difficulties.
