It's been bugging me for a while and I love your meta and all your thoughts, so I wanted to get your opinion on this.

Why do you think Nandor is so repressed? Or so in denial about Guillermo? I understand Guillermo and his motivations (well not so much this season but I can still make sense of them) but why is Nandor this way? I want to study him like a bug and go inside his brain

I, too, feel the feminine urge to put Nandor in a jar and shake him. I've had a couple days to think about this now, so here are my thoughts. There... are a lot of them, fair warning.

At first, I thought this was a loss response. He lost all 37 of his wives and their children in one fell swoop, and that seems to be something that has affected him strongly. And, y'know, I still think that's part of it. I think that after losing everything he had, the idea of trying again and making new relationships scares him. Having someone to love is having someone to lose, and Nandor is so afraid of loss.

But then, y'know, I thought about the actual relationships he had with his wives, and I think a lot of what affects him now affected him then, too. It's a little hard to tell because most of the information we have from him is several centuries removed from the actual events, but it does seem like he probably never loved any of them with his whole soul. He said he didn't love all of them, and that's by his own admission. He didn't fight to keep any of them when they all left, and none tried to stay with him despite his vampirism. And he was pretty clearly leaving them alone for long periods while he went on his campaigns.

I think it's kind of telling that of all the creatures for his ghost to remember and miss, it wasn't any of his wives, it wasn't any of his men. It was... a horse. So I think we can probably say that he had a hard time creating serious human relationships even when he was alive.

I think... I've talked about this before and I'll probably talk about it again, but I do think that Nandor's got an almost pathological sense of dissatisfaction. He's never actually satisfied with anything in his life and he's always chasing after the next big thing. But I think that's because he's afraid of the intimacy that comes from working at a relationship. It's easier to chase the idea of a relationship than build one with the people who are already close to you.

If you think about it, all of Nandor's serious love interests have never really demanded vulnerability from him. Even Gail, his longest-term relationship to date, was a fairly surface-level love story. She didn't expect much from him; he was just a guy for her to have some fun with every few years. The things they knew about each other were also very surface level. Like in the grand scheme of things, who cares if she likes yogurt and Bob Seger if you can't figure out her actual basic character motivations? It's important to remember little details about your SO, but Nandor was missing the forest for the trees.

So when he was alive and now that he's dead, we still have the same Nandor. A man who was constantly conquering new lands instead of cultivating the country he already had. (And immediately letting it fall to shit without even noticing once he was turned.) A man who had 37 wives, but not one who would stay with him once things got hairy. A man who was very happy to pursue new love interests, but very hesitant about actually giving them any real part of himself.

Nandor is a man who is all about acquisition, but he doesn't know what to do with things once he's got them. He loves the thrill of the chase, but the aching and terrifying vulnerability that comes after that is anathema to him. He's simply not willing to put in the work. He likes the fun part, the conquering, the fighting, the hunt. But actually opening up and cultivating a real relationship? Letting them see the awkward, weak parts of him? Trusting them to love him anyway?

He hates that.

I'm thinking back to season 1, y'know? When Guillermo got hurt? He told him that he was his friend, but then immediately felt too vulnerable and walked it back. That's Nandor. Letting people see the soft, unexplored emotions inside of him is too much for him. It makes him feel fundamentally unsafe the way a battlefield never has. Even he doesn't like examining those emotions too closely.

(And let's be real... a horse isn't going to ask you about your feelings.)

So then we have Guillermo. Guillermo, whom he cannot hypnotize into forgetting his awkward, embarrassing moments. Guillermo, who has slowly learned him over the years, both inside and out. Guillermo, who has seen him at his worst and still loves him. Guillermo, who knows him.

Nandor has a kind of intimacy with Guillermo that I'm not sure he's ever had with any other living soul, and I think that scares him. I think it thrills him, yes! I think that's sort of what was actually happening in that familiar fights episode. He senses this strange bond with Guillermo and wants to strengthen it and test it and wallow around in it. He can tell on a fundamental level that there is something important and good and fun there.

But he also refuses to examine it. He refuses to name it. He refuses to let Guillermo that last little step into his heart. To put it into the show's metaphorical terms, Guillermo has managed to break into Nandor's secret basement treasure room despite his best efforts, but Nandor still batted Guillermo's hands away when he tried to examine the treasure.

He still can't even force himself to admit that he likes those rainy Sunday movie nights with Guillermo or that Guillermo is his best friend. (Though Guillermo now seems to understand the things that Nandor cannot say, in these situations.) I think admitting to himself that he's in love with him is just far too much for him. I think admitting that he loves, truly loves, Guillermo would be admitting that he's never felt anything like this before. I think it would be admitting that he's never let anyone in this deep.

And most of all, I think that would be giving Guillermo the power to hurt him like no one has ever managed to do. Not his 37 wives, not his dead children, not Gail. No one. Because if he lets Guillermo see all the most intimate parts of him and Guillermo doesn't like what he sees... that would break him, I think. If Nandor finally allowed himself to really try with a relationship and still got rejected... well, let's just say that it would hurt a lot worse than Gail's rejection of the shallow version of himself that he allowed her to see.

I think that the real root of Nandor's issues is a fear of vulnerability, loss of control, and rejection. He won't let himself fully feel his feelings because he can't control where they'll go. We're talking about a literal former warlord over here. He likes to control things and he likes to feel powerful. The fact that he can't control his own emotions is troubling to him, and the fact that he can't control his relationships with others is even more so.

So he at least controls what he gives them of himself. What he allows himself to internally acknowledge. He still keeps some parts of him segmented off and secreted away. Because it's a way to protect himself and protect that sense of control. If he never allows himself to become fully vulnerable with a person, he can retain control. If he never allows anyone to fully know him, then they cannot reject the most fundamental parts of him that he never allowed them to see.

It is, I'm afraid, one of those mortifying ordeal of being known things.

We're starting to see him loosening up, though. He was willing to give up control of the Council. Control of the household. Control of his life to Guillermo. He's willing to be something other than the leader at all times. And he's starting to let go of those emotions he's kept on such a tight tether for all these years.

I keep coming back to s3, y'know? When he said, "I have no one to share my dreams or my fears with." That's what Nandor really wants here. He wants someone he can finally free himself around. He doesn't want someone that's willing to let him confide in them -- he wants someone that he can bear to confide in. He wants someone who he can trust with those parts of him like he's never trusted anyone before. He wants someone who he can tell his most secret desires to without fear of judgment or reprisal. He wants someone who he can talk to about being afraid without feeling like he's lost a fundamental part of himself when doing so.

And then in 4.06 that's exactly what we saw. We see Nandor truly opening up, truly allowing himself to be vulnerable with someone on his wedding night. But not his wife. It was Guillermo, when Nandor finally allowed himself to give Guillermo something real and true and scared. To admit how he was really feeling right in that moment. The vulnerability we saw in his eyes for just a moment was heartbreaking.

He still ended up choosing yet another shallow, empty relationship that would place no real demands on him. But I don't think he's going to be able to ignore what he really wants for much longer. I think realizing what a massive cock-up this wedding was is the beginning of the end for him.

I think Nandor's going to hit a breaking point soon, and it may very well come when he realizes (or at least believes) that Guillermo no longer wants him. He's finally found that person that he's willing and able to give everything to... and that person might just reject it.

wanna hear me rant bae

i’m very frustrated with my romantic prospects at the moment. it’s bad enough to be a woman in the world in general because it means you’re always playing a game you didn’t necessarily sign up for in which you almost always lose. but beyond that being a black “woman” means that people project all of this weird random shit onto me, which affected my feeling about romantic interaction from an early age since i didn’t interact with any other black kids until high school. regardless, minus anything on my end what i want from someone else seems so fucking rare— or, i see people who exhibit it, but they’re all around 40, and the prospect of waiting 20 years….it doesn’t seem like something i should have to do, anyway. i just feel romantically wrong. when a man has his arm around my shoulders i feel like i’m pretending to be something i’m not. if i’m not pretending then i can’t escape the feeling that he’s going to collect whatever he needs from my honesty and then go back to someone more feminine, more normal, less monstrous (and not black, lol!) and i sound like a dick saying this but while i think dating black people could be helpful in some ways, i don’t actually have a lot of cultural connection to blackness, given that i grew up only around asian kids (had to fight the urge to write “other” there help) in a fucking country club, and my family are caribbean immigrants. i do love being black but cultural blackness is something i actively participate in, and have only been participating in, again, since high school. there are too many boundaries i operate at the cusp of to not just be a sort of freak to most people. even my queerness is hard to place. i think i’m so cool, but an acquired taste, not something any majority of people could contend with. but it gets difficult as time progresses to truly perceive that i’ve never been treated nicely by men. i know that in refusing to objectify myself i have always alienated myself from romance. and then the virginity, the abandonment issues, the daddy issues all intensify everything. experimentation and trial become impossible because everything is so suffused with meaning. i think that remaining “a virgin” until this point was a mistake, the sort of trick society would play on a woman to keep her knowledge-less. i am in a power imbalance with every man i’m sexually interested in. i think about hiding my inexperience— but how shitty is it to have to do that? to have to shield yourself from your lover? but now it’s too late, anyway, i’m far too easily bruised to attempt to do away with my virginity randomly, which just means my inexperience is stoked for another year, another year. i’m always thinking these days of plath’s poem about virgins like rotting nymphs.

but that’s all big stuff, and i’m after something small, which still seems impossible to find. a man who can contend with me for a month or so, so not an idiot or a conquistador. 20 is a very fucking lonely age to be.

Hmmm I would actually say Jin, Yoongi, or Namjoon are the most composed kind of crazy (not that they don't have a breaking point evidently lmaoooo) but I will say he was the most calm (on the outside) this chapter because he's seen MC in the state she was in when she was talking about her trauma before. In fact, he's seen her vulnerable the most amount of times out of everyone there, so it didn't hit him as hard. (Not to say he wasn't losing his mind sitting there lol) But almost none of the other guys have seen her that upset before, so that's he was taking it the best (by default)

Jungkook has such a short temper that when he snaps, boy does he snap. I mean, he's a whole worldwide idol and he did not hesitate to absolutely wail on Donghee in the middle of a hospital lmao.

With Jin and Namjoon it takes much more for them to snap like that. Jin only snapped bc he thought he was a breath away from losing MC and it was making him absolutely spiral rip. Yoongi, however, can snap easier than Jin and Namjoon but he snaps in that eerie silent way.

As for their characterization, omg thank you I'm always worried they're not distinct enough, but I would say the fact that my initial inspo for the series being Brother's Conflict (I got this idea when I was like 16 lol) and me assigning certain brothers (excluding the 10 yr old ofc) to certain guys helped a lot in hammering down their characterization. Of course I didn't seriously write this until I was like 21 so a lot has changed to separate me from the premise's inspo (which as an adult I can see was very questionable at best, but nostalgia is rlly out here so I won't be too harsh about it rn lmao) but the simple fact that all those years ago I had to kind of figure out how I wanted them to be in a vague sense seriously helped!

Something that helps way more was giving each of them their own confession drabble, so that way I could establish how they are around MC one on one. Also the asks I get asking about how specific members would react to a certain situation really help me examine my writing regularly and make sure I keep their characterization as distinct as I can!

Jake’s nipples were beautiful, and you would love to show them the appreciation due to them, but not in front of your parents.

“What are you doing?” You hissed, shaking your head at his bare upper body.

“You’re the one who said ‘shirt up’!” He defended and you hid your face in your hands, groaning in mortification.

“I said shut up you absolute walking disaster!” You said, peeking at your father who shot you an incredulous look. His eyes were asking you for confirmation that this is the man you’re planning on spending the rest of your life with and you scrunched your nose.

Jake blushed, scratching his goatee bashfully before pulling his shirt on again. Your mother was clearly trying hard not to laugh, suppressing her giggles by pursing her lips. Your brother, however, had no chill because he kept munching on his snacks, watching your fiancé with a fascinated gaze that shifted to you after he was clothed again.

“Now I know why you stay with him. He’s ripped.” He said, nodding as if in approval. You threw a piece of salad at him, sitting down in silence until your father cleared his throat. The argument before Jake suddenly decided to flash everyone was almost forgotten, an uncomfortable silence descending on the dinner table.

“Right,” Your father said, “as I was saying earlier, I would have liked it had you asked for my daughter’s hand like a gentleman.”

You grabbed your fork tightly in your hand, shooting your father a glare. Seriously, what time was he living in?

“And like I said, I don’t need your permission to marry her. Only hers. And she said yes.” Jake grumbled, chewing on his food as he sulked, still a little red around his ears.

“And like I said, will you both please shut up?” You said, voice slightly raised. “I am not some object you’ll talk about as if I am not here. Dad, I made my choice when I said yes. And you, Jake, don’t you ever talk to my father like that again.”

Your brother looked between you three, very entertained. He was smirking, exchanging amused looks with your mother who didn’t look like in any hurry to interrupt this argument.

“You just told him to shut up yourself.” Jake said.

“He’s my daddy, I can talk to him how I want. But I’ll be damned if you raise your voice at him.” You huff, earning a very approving nod from your father.

“That’s my girl!” He cheered, reaching over to pat your back with a huge smile. You gave him a sarcastic one back, fixing him with a withering look.

“You can’t talk to my fiancé that way either. He’s gonna be your son in law soon, so treat him like family.”

At your father’s bewildered look, your mother wheezed out a laugh that she quickly stifled, stuffing her mouth with food. This isn’t how you expected this dinner to go at all. Not only had your father and fiancé got into an argument that ended up with one of them shirtless, but you were sure your brother had the hots for Jake.

“Who wants ice-cream?” Your mother asked, smiling sweetly and pointedly at you. You raised an eyebrow at her before getting up to follow her into the kitchen. She had no subtle bone in her body. On reaching the kitchen, she excitedly pulled you in and squealed.

“Oh god love, where did you find this guy?” She asked, bursting with curiosity. You cracked a smile at her enthusiasm, leaning against the counter as you shyly bit your lip.

“Half dead in the desert.” You told her, chuckling when her mouth dropped open. “Don’t worry, he’s not a bad guy. He’s got a complicated history.”

Your mother nodded, taking your hands in hers and squeezing gently. She knows Jake used to be in the military and didn’t ask for more information. There was much that happened to soldiers behind the scenes, things that were hard to put into words. She didn’t need to know what happened.

“He’s good to you, right?” She asked, eyes sparking when you nodded. “Oh my child, I am so happy for you. I’ve never seen you stand up for someone as you did today. I have high hopes for you both.”

With a soft smile you hugged her, taking in her natural musk and feeling like a little girl again who would plan her dream wedding with her. You’d always had trouble feeling feminine enough with two guns strapped to your thighs and hands roughed on the battlefield. But Jake made you feel like the softest, most beautiful woman in the world.

“I love him ma, I really do. I can’t imagine living without him.” You confessed. Your mother cupped your face and kissed your forehead, a lot like your grandma used to do.

“You won’t lose him” She promised, then looked out into the dining room and giggled. “Well, we better hurry out there. Your brother is trying to steal your man.”

You looked over your shoulder and screeched, stomping out and smacking your brother on the back of his head. You stood protectively in front of a very confused Jake, shielding him from your brother who was trying hard to look nonchalant.

“What?” He grumbled, rubbing his head where you hit him.

“Don’t even think about it. You’re not getting my man again.” You warned, wagging a threatening finger in his face. Jake lightly touched your back, pushing you aside to look questioningly at your brother with furrowed brows.

“You stole her boyfriend?” He asked in shock, looking a little impressed. You rolled your eyes as your brother smirked proudly, looking every bit like the man slut he was.

“Twice. I only did it to test their loyalty. Suffice it to say, they failed terribly. And they were horrible in bed. I did sis here a favor.”

You grit your teeth, fighting the urge to punch your brother. He meant well, but if he thought of putting one sleazy hand on your Jake, you’ll hit him in the balls.

“Did I fail too?” Jake asked nervously, looking at you with so much worry that you wanted to kiss his frown away. You looked at your brother with narrowed eyes, sending him a warning that he promptly ignored. He leaned his chair back on the hindlegs, swinging slowly as he regarded Jake with thoughtful eyes.

“You are the only one who has ever passed. You must really love my sis if you’re willing to overlook the more beautiful sibling.”

Jake sighed in relief, hugging you from behind as your smiled softly. Your father, very much done with the antics left without a word, talking about shameless children with no respect for elders. Your mother went after him after shooting you a wink, pleased with your choice.

“So, are you guys gonna have sex in your childhood bedroom?” Your brother asked. “If yes, Jake beware the posters on the wall. Sis was a freak.”

You would have lunged on the little shit had Jake not held you back, his breath washing over your skin as he laughed silently. Pulling you away, he pressed sweet kisses behind you ear, gently soothing you and preventing you from murdering your brother.

“Let’s go see those posters in your room baby. If you’re good, I’ll show you something better too.” He promised.

Does hidden mean the types of people (people with influence of the sign in your 12h) you are unaware are antagonizing you or is it that those characteristics in someone throw you off but you can’t really put your finger on why? Can these people believe that they are helping you but really they’re holding you back in some way? Can the hidden aspect go both ways? Why does 12h synestry have this effect? I have cancer on the 12h cusp and I’ve never really been able to develop any meaningful relationships with any (cancers) that I’ve met though I’ve been trying to emulate characteristics of this sign (12h as repressed tendencies). 12th House and Hidden Enemies

Since the 12th house is ruled by Neptune, this is the place in our chart where things can be difficult to ascertain. Things are murky and veiled here. Not only can you be unaware of where people are causing trouble for you but there can also be a weird “vibe” that something is not right with something or someone but one may not be readily able to make it out. In the natal chart, synastry, or composite this can display itself as mentioned above. Things can get triggered here in ways you are not altogether comfortable with. And of course, because like the 8th house, things can be deeply buried or repressed. For more insight lets look further:

Aries/Mars in the 12th

Hidden or unconscious foes can often attack a native’s go sense of self. This is because Aries/Mars rules the 1st house of self. “I AM”. Often a native with this placement may wind up feeling victimized without being able to put their finger on the source if said feeling. An astrologer/native will want to observe one’s Mars placement and the contacts it is making to other planets in the natal horoscope or in synastry/composite [Mid-point or Davison]. Ex: Mars in the 1st can indicate conflict to the self. Mars in the 7th can indicate complexity with enemies being close relationships. Venus in the 11th= friends or those in their general social network. This includes thievery, hoarding, over-spending, or living beyond practical means.  Undoing can come from going after comfort and security in toxic or co-dependent ways. Lovers or those who provide wealth and security may become enemies by withholding it from a native or trying to gain control over it behind the native’s back.

Gemini/Mercury in the 12th 

Secret enemies can come in many forms. Generally, this will be in the realm of communication, ideals, or intellect. The interactions may be formidable and stem from communicative interactions or opposing views. A  secret enemy will often challenge the native’s wits or will simply strive to appear more intelligent than them. Superficiality, fakeness, disingenuousness, and two-faced behavior are common threads. Undoing can display itself as blockages to learning, gaining insights, and general discouragement of focus that can make the native grow. An enemy will, in layman’s terms, try to make you look stupid. Insult your mind. Make you lose focus. Mercury aspects and placements can reveal more. Think of Regina George:  “OMG I love your skirt!” only to turn around and say “That is the fugliest effing skirt I’ve ever seen”.  with the 3rd house involved, siblings and extended family could be culprits or part of the problem.  A toxic person may try to attack your intellectual confidence. Unethical approaches involved with words and general attacks of the mind. These people may intentionally cause confusion or gaslighting. Watch out for people you perceive to be liars. Therein lies the foe.

Cancer/Moon in the 12th

Veiled Nemesis’ are often difficult to feel. Things will be subtle. Their tactics or vibes will often display themselves in the form of manipulation, passive aggression, or a general “toying with the feelings”. Since the moon/Cancer often represents the “mother”, toxicity from a parent or child may be an issue or the culprit. A native will often feel their sense of security or safety being “attacked”. Enemies will attach their healing methods and/or emotional confidence. The placement of the Moon can indicate where emotional damage typically goes on. Ex: Moon in the 10th can indicate attacks to the public person or prestige or even the career. Coddling, not being able to let go, clinginess and overprotection are general themes. Again, it may be hard to see since it is the moon that can be a mysterious place as is the 12th house. The channel that one discovers said enemy will typically be through intuition and even dreams. Remember, through said over-protection and general fear of letting go can lead to the native’s undoing. We often see the toxic side of femininity with this placement. Mom, Grandma, sister, great grandmother, etc can be involved in the problem here. Child-abuse, using the child as a pawn during custody battles, emotional manipulation in order to get what the enemy wants can be what causes the nemesis theme. A hidden enemy may cloak themselves as “just wanting the best for you” or “I do it because I love you and care.” The enemy may not be able to let go.

Leo/Sun in the 12th

Foes will strive to exert their and dominance over a native. This will display itself as the spirit of competitiveness, bullying, domination, bossiness, arrogance, etc. Think leonine traits at their worst. Leo in the 12th will do this behind the scenes with power plays. How they can lord things over a native. The father could be a culprit in this or the father could be part of the issue. Daddy issue [regardless of sex]. Internalized misogyny. The Sun’s placement can reveal more. Sun in the 3rd will try to influence the mind or dominate the intellect. Sun in the 6th indicates a coworker or boss or one may feel/be overshadowed at work. The battle will always be involved with the core ego or one’s sense of self. A hidden nemesis will try to act like the dominant parental figure or act as if they are giving good sage-like guidance or person. They will try to act like the authority figure. This person will drain the native’s energy stores. The definition of an energy vampire. Why? because even as humans, we get our energy from the Sun. We are heliocentric. One can often feel drained energetically after dealing with such an individual. This will reveal to you “who” the enemy is. In addition, we can see more themes of toxic masculinity here just like Mars in the 12th. Moreover, the enemy may not be another person but the own native’s hubris. Virgo/Mercury in the 12th 

Secret enemies with this placement will often reveal themselves by criticism. More specifically, criticism about things a native is very insecure about. Like Taurus in the 12th, similar issues will display themselves through relationships. The ones closest to us. Your hidden foes may hide under the mask of “friend”. They are nearer than you are probably comfortable with. Look for those who are near and dear. Now, will all your teammates, family ties or friends be enemies? No. But you’ll want to be careful who you let into your circle with said placement. Best friends turn to enemies. The ones who hate on you when something good happens. Hidden foes may have may connections to karma. The feelings will be extremely felt through intuition and psychic insights. You’ll feel them but not really know where they’re coming from. Often there will be a “Nessus/Dejanira” theme going on. The victim and abuser. Often, the native will be the abused.  Strong Manipulation. The enemy will make you drink the “Kool-aid”. If it is an actual individual, the foe can play the martyr or cause you to sacrifice something precious to you. They can play off your insecurities or weakness and keep you emotionally dependent. They can toxic to your spirituality or try to influence your spirituality as well.

I think Bucky would absolutely lose his shit just like I am now.
