Starting to think that any fiction newspapers with the TDP are evil and should be banned. Specifically looking at you, The Daily Prophet and The Daily Punctilio. I don't know enough about DC to judge The Daily Planet, so they're safe for now.

fic rec: daily punctilio
All the News in Fits of Print [geraldine & moxie]
In which Moxie reads an article she finds suspicious, learns unexpected and upsetting things about Geraldine Julienne, and dines-and-dashes at a very In restaurant.
every cloud [jacques & lemony]
the snicket brothers (supposedly) at work.
puppeteer [esme/geraldine] (rating: M)
geraldine isn't really the kind of woman who would lock her editor in the basement. or, at least, not without some convincing.
Foolish Girl [geraldine/eleanora] (rating: M)
After a night meeting with Geraldine Julienne and some bottles of wine, Eleanora Poe finds herself in an unfamiliar place.
Off the Record [esme/geraldine] (rating: E)
"Cheap champagne," muses Esmé as Geraldine babbles. "She's like cheap champagne with a fancy-looking label, and it’s much too sweet and much too bubbly, but it gets you just drunk enough to forget how much you’re going to hate yourself in the morning."

Dunklaus 'head-canon' post to make up for my terrible posting habits on ao3:
Post-canon Klaus becoming obsessed with reading the paper. Violet is suspicious about this, since Klaus was never a particularly avid reader of the newspaper. He'd keep up to date on things, of course, but he wouldn't obsessively buy the paper everyday and spend entire days studying it. He also would not spend thirty minutes in front of the paper stand each morning lamenting on which one to buy as if his life was on the line at the choice he made. After months of his peculiar behaviour, she confronts him - and all he has to say is that love makes you do weird things.
Of course, this only makes her more confused, but Klaus refuses to elaborate, no matter how hard she bribes him with incentives of pretty hardcover books, opera tickets and trips to his favourite café.
It is only one month later, when she sees him jump out of his seat at the name "Quinn G.C. Damen" credited to a very well-written article in the Daily Punctilio that she realises her brother is still in love with their journalist friend that they lost many, many years ago.

Olaf’s Mansion
Written for @asouefanworkevent
"Hey, boss!" Fernald pushed the door open and waved the latest edition of The Daily Punctilio he was holding. Learning to hold a newspaper with his hook had taken him a while. "Have you seen the review? We were marvelous! You -"
The newspaper slid from his hook and landed on the floor of Count Olaf's tower room amid scraps of paper and empty wine bottles. Olaf was lying on the floor, eyes closed and ghostly pale. His arms were stretched out before him, his fingers bent to claws.
"Boss, why do you keep doing this? We were going to celebrate!"
Olaf didn't move. Only now, Fernald spotted the blood and splinters under his fingernails. All around him, fresh marks had been scratched into the wooden floor. They were sloppy, but he recognized the eye insignias at once.

just after lunch, a volunteer is slipped an early evening edition of the daily punctilio, in which a bookmarked article reads : nine cows are arrested by authorities under the suspicion of involvement with the v.f.d.   the tenth cow, escapes on a stolen tractor.   she slips it into her pocket, doing rather poorly to hide her smile. her brother is never going to live this down.
a very happy jacques snicket cow disguise day to those who celebrate !! ✨ 🐄

If The Sinister Duo found Olaf so useless, why didn't they jail him during his trial in The Penultimate Peril? (NCT)
Before answering the question, we must first think of the reasons why they found him USELESS and then why they found him USEFUL, before weighing the two to come to a conclusion:
Reasons Olaf is USELESS:
He is only focused on the Baudelaire fortune. Not even the Quagmire one, solely on Baudelaire revenge.
Speaking of Quagmire fortune, Olaf lost Duncan & Isadora to Hector's self-sustaining hot-air mobile home. The Duo worked quite hard to capture their parents, as TMWABBNH clearly states:
"After we went to all that trouble to restrain their parents in Peru."
He doesn't pay much attention to/realise the value of the sugar bowl.
He's become/been famous! Olaf has had 'Wanted' posters all over the city during the events of TEE - if The Duo knew that Esmé moved into the apartment at 667 Dark Avenue, and they themselsves live in the city, they DEFINITELY knew about Olaf's 'Wanted' posters.
As a sub-point to the above point, Olaf is dating the city's 6th most important financial advisor: her life is DEFINITELY NOT secret a from the press/The Daily Punctilio. He's wanted and they know it.
Reasons Olaf is USEFUL:
The Duo and Olaf both want to eliminate the Baudelaires. Except... Olaf wants to steal their money, first. The Duo have their plan to steal the Snow Scouts' fortunes, so they don't need the Baudelaire's, Quagmire's, or any other fortune of their enemies.
The Duo, especially at first, see Olaf as a pawn in getting the sugar bowl. This means they want(ed) him to get it... for them.
The Duo know that Olaf has direct access to Esmé's fortune - this, combined with her sheer lust for the sugar bowl, makes their [O + E's] coupling a great asset to The Duo.
Olaf is still a fire-starter - The Duo have brainwashed him and they know it.
So, given that there are more reasons Olaf's useless than useful, why do they still let him off the hook?
Well, there are actually a few reasons:
The Duo, by the time of TPP, know that Olaf and Esmé have broken up - by letting Olaf go [i.e. not jailing him], they give him a chance of reconciling with Esmé, so the Squalor fortune can still be used for the purpose of getting the Sugar Bowl.
The Duo know that Olaf is still a fire-starter (well, on that side of the schism) so they don't jail him because they need as many allies as possible, as they keep getting "foiled by those irritating volunteers".
The Duo are giving Olaf [yet] a[nother] second chance at being their underling. By letting him go, they want him to come crawling back to them.
Besides, I think that because The Duo were there, Olaf was 'set free'; if it were only Justice Strauss acting in loco iudex (in the role of a judge), the Baudelaires would've either:
Gone to jail with Olaf 'in light of recent evidence'
Been 'set free' despite all of their inadvertent, arguably accidental/necessary crimes.
Likely the latter, in my opinion.

I drink coffee from the vending machine at the university and feel alive like Esmé in the Hostile Hospital.
And that's when I realize once again that Esmé is not really the arrogant and selfish woman she appears in the book or by all sorts of people who like to hate her. I'm just grateful to the whole team, Daniel Handler, that they made it different, not like in the book. Lucy is just a diamond! With her acting, she made her so incredibly sensual and versatile. Es is also offended, she is able to understand, love, get upset, she is not just a fashion-obsessed woman, as she is in the book.
Now closer to coffee. Just think about it, Her Highness Es herself began to drink coffee from a shabby coffee machine for several times. Book Esmé would send someone to the supermarket, but wouldn't drink it. In the series, she is really simple at times and is able to do what she wants, and not what the Daily Punctilio writes. She is calm about the coffee from the vending machine. It's so cute.

hello, I was wondering which asoue character is your - well, i would say favourite, but I mean the one who fascinates you most, and why that is. I found your post about Duncan's idea to kick the fake sunny around hilarious, by the way.
Hi! My favourite characters are all three Quagmire triplets however the character who fascinates me the most is Quigley. 100%.
His actions are questionable at best, alongside who he chooses to place trust in. I get that Jaques was the first person Quigley was in contact with after the Quagmire fire so he would be more easily swayed by Jaques but still…the fact that Quigley CHOOSES to stay seperated from his siblings, allowing them to believe he is dead is intriguing, especially for someone claiming to have ventured to the Mortmain Mountains searching for them.
Quigley could have let Isadora and Duncan know he was alive at any time during their stay at Prufrock. On page 48 of ‘The Austere Academy’ Isadora states that she and Duncan had been living at the school for “three semesters”. Three semesters is approximately the equivalent of 45 weeks.
Why did Quigley not send them a letter during this time? Yes, Jaques said it was dangerous for people to know Quigley was alive, however Quigley was willing to risk sending a telegram to Violet in ‘The Grim Grotto’. Although, at that stage the secret of his existence had become known to Count Olaf and Esmé Squalor, which may have influenced Quigley’s decision to risk sending said telegram. This does not take away from the fact that Quigley still could have sent his siblings a CODED letter revealing his status as alive. Or, a coded newspaper article in ‘The Daily Punctilio’, as he knows of Duncan’s interest in journalism and how it would mean his brother is likely to see it. (‘The Austere Academy’ page 49 “I plan to be a newspaper reporter…figure it’s good to start practicing”-Duncan) (‘The Ersatz Elevator’ pg 143 “I’m still a journalist”-Duncan)
It is endlessly frustrating to me that Quigley waited until his siblings were out of reach (kidnapped) before he went out searching for them. The fact he went investigating in the Mortmain Mountains of all places is also somewhat incriminating. VFD headquarters was located in the Valley of Four Drafts so it is possible that Quigley was telling the truth: he was searching for his siblings and seeking information/help from VFD recruits. It’s possible he began searching after his siblings’ kidnapping to keep them safe, the same reason he didn’t reach out when they were ‘safe’ at Prufrock was because Jaques told him it was dangerous. That would align with what Quigley claims his intentions were: “set out to find the organisation. I thought they were my best hope of rescuing my siblings”. (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 8, page 155)
In ‘The Slippery Slope’ book version Quigley claims he got ready to search for his siblings prior to their kidnapping, “started to gather…supplies” (Chapter 8, page 147) but “was interrupted” by “Jaques Snicket” who Quigley did not know at the time but trusted because Jaques knew a lot about the Quagmire family, the secret passageway and because Jaques was “very well-read.” (The lack of sense in Quigley’s reasons to trust Jaques is very intriguing to me. Factors Quigley deems trustworthy I would see as suspicious and [“well-read”] irrelevant.)
Moreover, Quigley’s blind trust in Jaques portrays him as a sort of naïve character -maybe a manipulated one- as he obeys Jaques by remaining hidden even though Jaques neglected him during their stay at Montgomery Montgomery’s house, prioritising VFD work over the newly-orphaned, isolated child.
“Jaques spent a long time at Dr. Montgomery’s house, but he was too busy”… “to explain everything to me”… “He would”… “sleep all day, or disappear for hours at a time” -Quigley about Jaques Snicket (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 8, page 152)
Another possibility is that Quigley was not searching for his siblings in the Mortmain Mountains. He was searching for the sugar bowl.
Reasons:
1: Quigley is very likely a VFD recruit, VFD recruits are searching for the sugar bowl.
Reason to believe Quigley is a recruit: when explaining the function of ‘Verdant Flammable Devices’ Quigley says
“so another volunteer will know where you are” (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 7, page 126)(not originally bolded) The word choice “another” implies that Quigley himself is a volunteer.
Another reason: Quigley suggests that Isadora-his triplet- may be a member of VFD already “I wonder if that’s a code she learned from V.F.D.”-Quigley (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 10, page 187)
2: It could be interpreted that Quigley has already been inside of VFD headquarters. If he had been there searching for his siblings why would he lie about never entering the headquarters whilst it still stood?
“I read that there was a large window”… ‘moving his gloved hand in the air as if it were still there’. “When it was your turn to cook you could look out at the waterfall while you were chopping vegetables or simmering sauce” -Quigley Quagmire (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 7, page 136)
^The hand gesture in particular suggests Quigley’s familiarity with the building as it conveys how he knew the precise spot where the window was situated. Even possessing the information‘through reading’ that you could “look out at the waterfall while cooking” he should have needed time to work out where the kitchen worktop would be positioned to figure where the window would be. The specific actions “chopping vegetables” and “simmering sauce” especially hint towards this being something Quigley tells from personal experience rather than reading. Unless it was a diary or an encoded message why would somebody write in such detail about a secret headquarters? Unless Montgomery Montgomery kept a diary which Quigley found whilst staying in his house?
^Additionally, volunteers “chopping vegetables” has extra relevance. Quigley is a TRAVELLER at this point, he should only have food on him that is long-lasting, otherwise is SURELY would have gone mouldy… so where does he get the carrot sticks he offers Violet on the frozen waterfall? (See Chapter 10, page 188 of ‘The Slippery Slope’.)
Carrot sticks=A chopped vegetable. What did volunteers do in the VFD headquarters’ kitchen? Chopped vegetables!
3: Quigley has written about the sugar bowl in his notebook,
“Jaques Snicket mentioned a sugar bowl once” … “said it was very important to find it” …”I wrote it down on…a page in my commonplace book” (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 11, page 219)
4:The sugar bowl is located in the Mortmain Mountains whilst Quigley is there.
Asides from the endless theories surrounding Quigley’s actions, I find his characterisation interesting. Likeable too, if you couldn’t tell that already by the sheer amount I’ve written about him…
He’s so isolated and very much in denial about that.
“Not quite by myself”… “I had this backpack” … “and I had my commonplace book”-Quigley (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 8, page 155) This is just SAD.
“I wish Isadora were here”-Quigley (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 11, page 217)
He’s so LONELY! Everyone thinks he’s DEAD! His siblings are kidnapped; Quigley has no way of knowing that they’re even still alive! His mother left him in that secret tunnel then the first adult he saw (and became attached to-) after her kept leaving him continuously without even SAYING he was going anywhere! (Implied by word choice “disappear” describing Jaques’ actions) Only for Jaques to leave and never come back! Then-and this gets OVERLOOKED- the snow scouts he spent time with when disguised as one, were KIDNAPPED! They were literally swooped up and taken away right before his eyes!!! After THAT he gets SEPARATED from the only friends he still has!!!! Somebody give this child a hug!!!!!!!!!!!
The isolation he’s in has caused Quigley to become INDEPENDENT and capable, unable to rely on others he can only help himself.
“We found it in a coded map”-Klaus Baudelaire
“I had to draw my own map.”-Quigley Quagmire (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 7, page 126)
Despite not having any of the advantages of childhood (receiving help) he is still vulnerable to the drawbacks: “Bruce saw my matches and confiscated them, because children shouldn’t play with matches”-Quigley (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 9, page 163)
He’s selfless too, to an extent, when he helps the Baudelaires save Sunny even though it risks his safety and well-kept secret of being alive
“You don’t have to risk your life any further”-Violet
“Don’t be absurd” “Of course I’m going to help you” -Quigley (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 9, page 182)
Although, the fact he risks his identity being leaked to help the Baudelaires circles back to the question of why he let his siblings believe he was dead.
Point out of his favour: Quigley helps to convince Violet to leave her baby sister to spy on villains, “Sunny can find out for us, but only if she stays here.” (Chapter 10, page 202) but everyone has flaws. We don’t need to criticise Quigley for this, right? If anything it depicts how brainwashed he is.
He’s naïve:
“I never thought of learning about maps as training,” Quigley said. “I just liked it.” -(‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 11, page 213) [Referring to his home-life pre-fire]
^The fact Quigley keeps placing trust in adults with hidden intentions is heartbreaking.
He’s MORALLY GREY in the books especially!!! He has the idea to hold Esmé Squalor hostage:
‘ “We could take her prisoner,” Quigley said’ … “thinks cigarettes are in. If we lit some of them, she might smell the smoke and come down here.” (‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 11, page 221) The fact that he’s willing to do bad things to protect the people he cares about contributes to why he’s one of my favourite characters.
Although he helps the Baudelaires, Quigley did not reveal his identity to them until there were no other options of people he could turn to. He kept his mask on when they were working on the lock but thought nothing of revealing VFD secrets,
“very centre of the Valley of Four Drafts, so the smoke is scattered… V.F.D doesn’t want anyone to see the smoke.”-Quigley(‘The Slippery Slope’ Chapter 7, page 125)
meaning he was intentionally keeping his identity secret from them until they finished helping him with the lock. He was using them, if only for a small thing, redeeming himself when he helps them later.
In conclusion, Quigley is the most fascinating ASOUE character because his actions and words compose of half-truths and veiled intentions, leaving him open to interpretation. He is not straightforward. I see him as a character who doesn’t always do what he thinks is good but will try to display himself as having good intentions, even if that means lying. Quigley leaves behind more questions than answers and is therefore the most intriguing character.
Thanks for the ask! (+thanks for the compliment! I’m happy you enjoyed my post!) :)
This may be…a little longer than you anticipated… it is far lengthier than I thought it would turn out anyway! Whoops?
Please, feel free to send more asks! :)

platonic: Kit and Bertrand
Kit and Bertrand! Hell yeah!
If I ever thought about it: It's not really as develop as other SBG friendships, but I do think of them! I feel they're like, a perfect platonic match for one another. I don't explore it a lot, let along talk much of it much, but these two are there in my mind.
Who I think befriended the other first: Both insisted that the other was the one who initiated their friendship with one another.
Kit was running in the rain using her Uncle F's coat to shield her (because she was adamant that it wasn't going to rain because the Daily Punctilio's forecasts are wrong), and suddenly, it stopped. Kit looks up to see Bertrand -who while younger than her, who never interacted with her until now- using his umbrella to shield her.
Bertrand had saw Kit running in the coat, and chased after to shield her from the rain. Bertrand told her no need to thank him, but Kit did, and began a conversation. Bertrand found himself replying more than simple, short replies, finding the older girl to be nothing as she seem to be from a distance.
Who I think would steal the food of(f) the other plate: Bertrand. He doesn't look like the sort, but Bertrand will steal all of your food if you're gone for longer than [he] expected. Kit learned the hard way when she found her key-lime pie slice gone, with Bertrand not even looking guilty as he wiped his mouth clean.
Which one would tell the other a secret first: Kit. Kit knows one too many secrets, either because of her own decision or it was force upon her without any say. At times it overwhelms her so badly, she has to tell someone. And Bertrand is always willing to listen, promising Kit to never reveal them (and he never did. He died knowing many secrets, some being of Kit herself, some being of other people).
Ideal Hangout Locations: Hotel Denouement (any of the rooms), Kit's car (they be blasting and singing to the radio), Bertrand's apartment flat, The Baudelaire Mansion (usually with others pre-Island. Post-Island is themselves, with Beatrice taking Violet out around the City, or to be with other friends).
Which one would pretend to be their significant other if the situation ever calls for it: Somehow surprisingly, they never get put into this situation. If anything, Kit and Bertrand are mistaken for siblings, blood siblings or adopted siblings. And Kit and Bertrand are disappointed, because they legit have a two-page fake relationship history for them as a couple and they just need a chance to share it.
What causes them to fight, seriously or jokingly:
The two got into humorous fights about the differences between scallions and green onions, cilantro and coriander, and hares and rabbits. They always try to get other involves too.
Regarding serious fights, Myceilum Argument is the one that stands out. Kit strongly disagrees about the Myceilum's usage for good (because it's just too dangerous). Bertrand strongly believes it's power of good if kept in the right hands. This fight only came to be AFTER the Baudelaire's return from the Island, when all the fragmented clues are put together at last.
Kit and Bertrand do eventually come to an understanding on WHY the other think the way they feel, and agreed to push aside this fight in the past, because both agreed that the Myceilum will never be seen again, After all, the tunnel was never completed, and there's no way to access Anwhistle Aquatic anymore.
How they stop being friends: Time. And their loyalties.
Kit slowly began devoting more time to her duties for the organization, for she decided it's time to be a proper volunteer. She over time, longer made the visits to the Baudelaire Mansion, or answered the messages left on her phone. She no longer had the time to find glimpses of the man with glasses and long hair on the streets.
Bertrand slowly began his paperwork to enter 'retirement' for the organization, for he decided it's time to be with his family, a proper family man. He over time, no longer made the long walks to Kit's car, or left messages at random payphones. He longer had the time to find the woman with pencils in her messy bun on the roads.
@tangentiallly, thank you for picking this platonic ship!

Share with dash something you're currently into, and tell us about it! It can be a movie, a song, a book, a project you're working on, anything that comes to your mind!
I held off on this because at the time I didn't have much going on aside from Airplane which everyone already knew about lol. Now I've fallen in to Lemony Snicket hell and I'm reading through the books to see how they differ from the Netflix show. I'm only on book three, but thus far, Olaf is less comical and more menacing in the books. There are also things in the Netflix series that just don't even seem mentioned like Eleanora Poe and The Daily Punctilio. It's not one of those "the books are better" situations, but they are definitely different. Either way, this series is really interesting commentary about how kids in abusive situations are often just dismissed when they try and speak up and how institutions meant to protect them so often fail.
In other news, I also got a rock tumbler so I could polish some of the cool rocks I find out here lol.
Tumblr media
The cluster at the top is banded agate, below it on the right is jasper, two pieces of petrified wood at the bottom and fusulinid fossils on the left. I don't know what the round rock is made of, but sometimes I find these spherical concretions so I threw one in just to see what happened lol. It pretty much just got smaller and smoother, but not very shiny lol.

geraldine julienne & moxie mallahan, referenced kidnapping and minor character death, (character death is not explicitly canon but after researching for this fic i am 90% convinced that it is canon)
@whoslaurapalmer's prompt fill for the @asouefanworkevent
Moxie Mallahan took a sip of her now cold tea, sighed, and looked back at the title and byline of the article she was studying from yesterday’s mid afternoon edition of the Daily Punctilio.
Baudelaire Orphans at Large, by Star Reporter Geraldine Julienne.
Moxie was—she suspected—the foremost expert in meta journalism, and her familiarity with the Daily Punctilio through that lens was peerless. This article—the additional title in the byline, the sloppiness of the reporting even by the standards of the Daily Punctilio—struck her as suspicious. Something out of the ordinary might be going on, and Moxie had built her life around investigating suspicions that others might ignore, as was her job as a journalist.
She folded up the newspaper, packed up her portable typewriter, straightened her waistcoat, put on her jacket, laced up her boots, checked the angle of her hat in the mirror, and walked out the door to begin her investigation.
