There have been several attempts on Mei’s life; I think. Constantly stamping down resurrectionists and whatnot. She took down the caste-system, so I imagine it was many who previously benefited who wanted to see her dead.

Terumi Mei, the Godaime Mizukage is many things, merciful, kind, intelligent, deemed the strongest in her village. None of these traits apply to those who endanger her home, and her people.

To have an earth-nature was rare, in these islands, but Mei climbed the ranks, honing her strength and gaining a reputation until no one could dispute her right to stand and fight. Until 'Earthshaker' was a name on the lips of both allies and enemies.

They didn't realise that crimson hair wasn't all her mysterious mother had given her, not until it was too late.

Mei crushed the old Kiri beneath her heel, cracking the island is two and destroying the corrupted leadership that had tortured them all for so long. Then, and only then, did she finally allow the Uzumaki chakra in her chest to pour outwards in a burning stream of heat.

Her revolution didn't end with an uprising; it began with the red dawn and the blaze of lava as she crafted their island anew.

(( clears my throat- Sasuke/Mei Terumi. Originally a political marriage post war that Sasuke agreed to since he wants other suitors to stop bothering him. He is effectively a trophy husband, still free to do his work in Canon (and has a nice place in Kiri he can stop and rest at every couple of years) and Mei can brag she's finally married. But down the line they do care for each other when he starts showing up more often. His face in her bosom...))

Mei watches her breath fog in the air and disappear in the surrounding mist. She shoves her gloved hands inside the pockets of her jacket. Kirigakure never snows in the winter, but the mist surrounding it gets so thick and the rain gets so cold that the inhabitants still have to wear a few layers above their armor. 

Well, most inhabitants.

Utakata is sitting beside her on the bench, his kimono ever so slightly open to show off a cleavage that goes almost to the middle of his torso. Perhaps being a jinchuuriki has some perks.

“It’s tomorrow,” Mei says. Tomorrow she’ll die or become Mizukage.

“I’ll be there,” Utakata replies.

They both know he’s lying.
