Mdzs modern AU where teen Lan Wangji keeps voice recordings of himself confessing his love to Wei Wuxian, but never sends them. Wwx runs away from home & disappears for 13 years and Lwj searches for him while recording all his feelings. Maybe he keeps all of these recordings in an old MP3 player or something idk, and just, abandons it in his old house when his family moves into a new big one. And maybe one day coincidentally Wwx moves into the same house, finds the player and finds out that his first love, has been loving him back all these years, and maybe in some of the recordings, Lwj talks about how he has been writing a song for him, and that he has already decided the name of it, and in the last one, he hums the song, but doesn't say the name of it. And Wwx frantically searches for Lwj everywhere and when he finally finds him, after 13 years, the first thing he says to Lwj when he sees him,

"You didn't tell me the name of the song"

And Lwj just, freezes, not yet comprehending anything that's happening, except the fact that the love of his life is standing right in front of him and asking him a question about something he could never know unless a miracle happened, but somehow uttering the word,

"Wangxian."

The rest is history.

Honestly... This fandom disappoints me so much at times. "Teenxian's feelings for Teenji were a secret third thing."

It's called comphet 🙄

Yet there's like 4k of fans that have RTd that post in agreement. Ffs. It's so obvious Teenxian's feelings for Teenji were romantic 🤣 He went on and on about how gorgeous he was, flirted with him constantly and even bought him gifts!

And yet... In the same breath, those same people call WWX bisexual! Wtf! So he can literally pursue Teenji and it's nothing. But he charms (nothing compared to how he treats Teenji!) a girl for food/medicine (for LWJ!!) and suddenly he's interested in her (even though he later admits never having feelings for anyone bar LWJ).

I don't know man, there's some serious heteronormativity to all that if you ask me. If he was acting this way with a girl no one would deny he had a crush! Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but to ignore his obvious attraction to the dude and then exaggerate something that meant nothing to him at all, is just so strange.

I would be happy to try and break this down a little bit; let's go ahead and grab that scene. I'll be trimming some of the dialogue around it since we just want what Wei Wuxian says, we don't need all the natter from the other boys this means you, Jiang Cheng.

Nie HuaiSang spoke, “What other Lan Zhan is there? Yes, it’s that one. Oh gosh, he’s the same age as you and I, but he has none of the energy of a teen. He’s stiff and strict, even worse than his uncle.”

Wei WuXian made the sound of an oh and asked, “Is he a lad who looks quite pretty?”

Jiang Cheng sneered, “Is there anyone who looks ugly in the GusuLan Sect? His sect doesn’t even accept disciples with unclean features. If you can, find me one who has an average face.”

Wei WuXian emphasized, “Very pretty.” He pointed at his head, “White from top to bottom, wearing a forehead ribbon, and carrying a silver sword on his back. He looked rather handsome, but with his straight face, he looked like he was mourning.”

Wei WuXian threw up his hands, “So, he didn’t let me in. He wanted me to move back the leg that had already stepped in. You tell me—how would I do that? And then, he came up, as light as a feather, and asked me what I had in my hands.”

Jiang Cheng felt his head start to ache, indicating a foreboding feeling, “What did you say?”

Wei WuXian spoke, “‘It’s Emperor’s Smile! If I share a jar with you, can you pretend that you never saw me?’”

Jiang Cheng sighed, “… Alcohol is forbidden in the Cloud Recesses. That’s a worse crime.”

Wei WuXian spoke, “He said the same thing to me. And I asked, ‘Why don’t you tell me what exactly is not forbidden in your sect?’ He seemed like he was a bit angry and wanted me to look at the Wall of Rules in front of the mountain. Honestly, there were over three thousand, and everything was written in seal script. Who would read them? Did you read them? Anyways, I didn’t. What’s angering about this?”

Wei WuXian suddenly added, “What? Fighting without permission is also prohibited?”

Jiang Cheng, “… Yes. Don’t tell me you fought with him.”

Wei WuXian, “I did. And we broke a jar of Emperor’s Smile.”

“I drank it.”

Jiang Cheng, “Where did you drink it?”

“In front of him. I said, ‘Okay, if alcohol is prohibited in the Cloud Recesses, then I won’t go in. I’ll drink it standing on the wall. That wouldn’t count as violating the rules, would it?’ Then I drank everything in one gulp, right in front of him.”

“… And then?”

“And then we started fighting.”

“Wei-xiong.” Nie HuaiSang blurted out, “You’re so smug.”

Wei WuXian lifted his brows, “Lan Zhan’s skills were quite good.”

So the first fun thing here is that we never actually get their first meeting in the text. This is as close as we get, and it’s very interesting indeed.

On a first readthrough, it might not be super standout, but what’s the first thing that Wei Wuxian remembers about Lan Wangji? He’s pretty. Very pretty. He gives a better description later, but that’s literally what he leads with and it’s the first sign that Wei Wuxian is just captivated by him. He doesn’t first think of Lan Wangji as stern, or mean, or cold. He thinks he’s beautiful.

We also get that Lan Wangji’s skills really impressed him, he’s happy to compliment his fighting skills even though Wei Wuxian was in the middle of getting in trouble for being a teenager and sneaking out to smuggle booze into the Cloud Recesses in the middle of the night. Look at the way both his description of the event and Nie Huaisang’s comment on his tone go. He isn’t at all bothered by this, it clearly was fun and he enjoyed it. Their first meeting definitely made an impression on him and it’s clear that rather than deterring Wei Wuxian in any way, the comments about Lan Wangji are only making him more interested.

That being said, it is a little hard to read into just how their first meeting can show how compatible they’ll be later on, because again, we only get Wei Wuxian’s recounting of the event and in rather sparse detail at that. Lan Wangji definitely made a huge impression on him and that will remain true, but at this point, Wei Wuxian has no idea what Lan Wangji is thinking about when he looks at him or anything like that.

What we can do though, is look at the whole of the lectures and see how it showcases their future compatibility much better. Sure, a lot of it is Wei Wuxian teasing and Lan Wangji responding by either threatening to fight or running away, but it’s kind of an elegant little fledgling dance. There’s a way that they are just drawn to each other and it’s mutual. Watch how many times that Wei Wuxian in the parts of the Cloud Recesses that he’s allowed into just so happens to spot Lan Wangji. Notice the tiny ways that Lan Wangji starts to soften, the little glimpses of his heart behind the flustered maiden antics, the tiny scraps of emotion beneath the -_- face. It is subtle, especially since they are still young and scrabbling with feelings so much bigger than they’ve ever felt before, but that fascination is mutual, and strong. 

I think the clearest example of what will become a very visible compatibility when they’ve both grown up and settled down a little bit is the rabbit scene. Wei Wuxian knows exactly where to find Lan Wangji and how to tease him into accepting the rabbits that Wei Wuxian can see that he wants. Look at how docile the two rabbits are, one of them is just lying on the floor after he drops them off! These were not rabbits picked to torment him, these were always meant to be pets. And the most telling line in this is where he says “You’re always like this,” cause at this point they have the beginnings of an understanding of each other. Wei Wuxian is figuring out that Lan Wangji can really like things and yet not be able to say it yet, and that his reactions are not necessarily because he doesn’t like Wei Wuxian. His reaction to being pushed out the window is to laugh.

The real tragedy here is that they keep being separated time and time again, first by distance, then by war, and at last by death. As we can see, the more time they get to spend with each other, the faster they connect and understand each other on a very deep level. It’s in the Lectures arc and it does start from that first meeting; this knowledge that the person they’re looking at is fascinating in a way they can’t describe yet, but Wei Wuxian will sure as hell remember every detail of their fight and describe it with glee along with how pretty Lan Wangji is to everyone around him! This is an important detail that people need to know, Lan Wangji is very pretty!

Anyway, I know I went a little off topic, but I hope this helps out a lot. I do think it’s something at least that CQL got right too, that fascination and inability to look away from each other is right in that moonlit meeting, although I do wish that they hadn’t added the subplot with the missing invitation because it doesn’t stand out quite as much as their first meeting when we did have them arguing about invitations before. But the actual framing of them in the moonlight, the delicate motions and music, that’s really well done.

"Wei Ying," Lan Zhan cleared his throat lightly as he fidgeted with his clothes. "What if they do not like me?" 

Silver eyes blinked rapidly at him several times in utter disbelief. "What?! Not like you? But Lan Zhan, what's not to like! I promise! They're gonna love you! You even got all dressed up!" 

"Mn... I am meeting your parents, I want to look my best." Which was saying something, since the 17 year old always looked his best. Lans were very well known for their pristine attire, after all. 

Wei Ying couldn't help but cackle a little. "Lan Zhan, you'll be fine. Just be yourself. I love you, so I know they will love you." He grabbed his boyfriend's hand and pulled him into the house. "Mama! Baba! I'm home! I brought Lan Zhan like you asked!" 

The sweet smell of food hit them instantly and Wei Ying's stomach growled, but neither had time to worry themselves over it as a loud hasp was heard, and Cangse Sanren came hurrying over, her boundless energy instantly reminded Lan Zhan of his perfect boyfriend. 

"Ooooh! Qīn’ài de! Hurry, hurry! He's here!" She called over her shoulder before looking at Wei Ying with a loving warmth before pulling him into a hug. "Welcome home, baobei! And you must be Lan Zhan?" She turned her attention to the rather anxious looking teen who was trying to mask it with a neutral expression. 

"Yes, ma'am. Thank you for having me. I brought these for you." He held up a small bouquet of three mixed colored roses. 

Her eyes lit up and she smiled, gently taking them from him. "Oh, they're lovely! Thank you, A-Zhan!" Without warning, she pulled him into a hug, doing her best not to giggle at how stiff he became. (She remembered the first time she forcefully hugged Lan Qiren, who she only recently learned was related to this dear boy.) 

"Thank you for taking such good care of our YingYing. He talks nonstop about you~" she released him, delighting in how red the poor boy's ears were. 

"Darling, don't suffocate him yet, he just walked in the door." Wei Changze stepped around the corner and ruffled his son's hair before he held his hand out, briefly sharing a firm handshake with Lan Zhan. 

"It's nice to meet you."

"You as well, sir. Thank you for having me." 

"Oooh, he's so polite~ come, come! Dinner is just about done. We can all sit at the kitchen table while it finishes." 

She easily dragged the teenage boys inside, and Wei Ying couldn't help but grin at his boyfriend. He knew his parents would love him! 

The dinner went off without a hitch, and Sanren eased Lan Zhan into talking quite a bit before and after the meal. She respected that he didn't speak during their meals, so instead, she shared all her favorite baby stories about Wei Ying, which flustered her son to no end. 

It was a nerve-wracking experience, but it was easily one of the best nights Lan Zhan and Wei Ying had. It was full of acceptance and love and laughter. Neither could have hoped for the night to go any better. 

And if Changze teased Wei Ying after he saw Lan Zhan kiss him goodnight, well, what else is a loving father supposed to do?

good jiang parents au where lan wangji finally went to visit wei wuxian in lotus pier and they have a romantic/sexual tension moment in wei wuxian's room, they're almost kissing when jiang cheng suddenly arrives and opens the door sharply and loudly, startling the boys inside.

jiang cheng stares at them and wei wuxian stares back, lan wangji panicking in silence in the back. and then jiang cheng smirks and turns around, making wei wuxian scramble up and run after him yelling "jiang cheng NO! COME BACK HERE"

they run for a moment, servants and discuples stepping back to avoid collision, until jiang cheng finally arrives at his parents favorite pavilion where he knows they're having afternoon tea together and yells: "MOM WEI WUXIAN WAS KISSING LAN WANGJI IN HIS BEDROOM!"

Summary: Post-canon Lan Qiren time travels to before the Cloud Recesses lectures. The Cloud Recesses are quiet and peaceful, something his home hasn't been in years. ...In fact, it is too quiet and peaceful. Kay's comments: This story made me cackle. Just. The thought of Lan Qiren taking off to Lotus Pier randomly and just straight-up kidnapping Wei Wuxian so that he can get his nephew-in-law as soon as possible. The added fanart was also really well-done! Super funny! Excerpt: He decides to do his lonely younger nephew a favor (and himself, but that part he won't admit to) and gift him his future husband early. It does not matter that they have not met yet - he knows how their story goes, and if he can save Wangji over a decade of suffering, then by gods he will do it. If Lan Qiren himself gets a very inventive, engaging and intelligent research partner cum nephew-in-law earlier, all the better. If he gets a grandchild early, or - heavens, what joy it would be! - a few grandchildren, then he will not complain, certainly. So he informs those who need to know that he will be unavailable for a day or two - he does not foresee any complications that would warrant a longer absence - and leaves for Lotus Pier.
