since i've spent the past few days essentially staring at nothing but natsuyuu volume covers i thought it'd be so fun and silly to try and redraw them all from memory tee hee. all 30 (thirty) (三十) of them!!! wheee!!!!

i haven't actually looked at them next to the originals yet so guess what time it is!!!! LET'S COMPARE

starting with volume 1. iconic. show stopping. masterpiece. the mona lisa of natsuyuu SURELY i reproduced every single detail perfectly such that it kickstarts my career as a forgery artist RIGHT

but i remembered the book of friends is like. weirdly purple? ok well in this pic it looks p gray BUT ON OTHER COPIES...... IF U UP THE SATURATION GKSJKDNFKDG

why is nyanko sensei smack dab in the middle HUH i couldve sworn he was bottom left this is so fucked up and scary. haunted manga volume??????? i bought it from a grarage sale idk you guys-

as i was toying w the idea of doing this redraw thing i was still working on collecting my Images and Pictures so i kinda started taking note of a few small things here & there and one of them was just. the general gist of this cover SO LIKE that's why it's so good LOL

forgor the flowers tho. i literally forget everything that isn't a character like immediately BUT OK CUT ME SOME SLACK like after a point the covers start being whole ass scenes which are SO much easier to remember shit abt than the fuckin Green Void (p sure this is the last green void cover tho)

8/10 composition is gr8 but details like the shirt & the yellow flowers are wrong, also the stick is backwards. i literally looked up what that thing is called and forgot already tee hee

fuck dude. fuck. i rly thought vol 6 was the last one LOL not to spoil but as i was grabbing these images i saw a Preview of what's to come and the green void lasts until fuckign volume TEN LOL collapses onto the ground and dies

so erhermrm this is vol 7 lolllll i remembered the bg flowers this time can u believe hahaha distracts u from the fact that LITERALLY everything else is wrong auhghg

u know what the green void turned into bushes and i think that's beautiful.... like points for creativity on my part tbh. like to be completely honest. 3/10 i got the characters right

i remembered the BARE essentials of the composition but not much else... since i thought the green void was gone i put the green i remembered into natsume's yukata (and then put him in the school uniform again LOL) and went WELP. GUESS I'LL DIE NOW

OK THIS ONE.... i almost died irl trying to remember this shit, even before i started and i was still viewing the covers i was like there is no way in HELL im remembering this shit for vol 10. and i was right

like. Purple. White Mask. Antlers. WILD layered clothing. at first i drew the mask as an actual deer skull but later had a straight up epiphany and redrew it like that which... still not correct but I MEAN.... IT'S PRETTY GOOD

i cant believe most of the purple is the bg oughgh his clothes are WHITE..... this is fucked up. i DID remember the stick tho, bells and everything!! actually bells and nothing else!!!

7/10 ok it might seem high but CONSIDERING this design..... i think i did shockingly well TBH

obviously the most striking thing abt this cover is the bg w that deep burgundy & the circular window so that was the main thing i nailed down right away (my palette was more muted tho). also natsume sitting there w paper in his mouth but i thought he was mid return when rly hes playing like keep-the-balloon-off-the-floor or whatever the fuck he's doing. i love u natsume

disability studies & classics: some introductory texts!

as a disclaimer, this is not a complete list and not intended to be. i don't necessarily agree with everything in these texts, either – i'd be happy to discuss what i like/don't any time :-) that said, i included them because i find them useful or important or because i liked them enough i wanted to talk about them. further, not all of these texts are accessible (as in, free and online); send me an ask or message me if you want access to something & if i can i will send it to you.

in case you're looking for more sources but don't know where to find a good list, this – though as of posting (may 2023) is two years out of date – is a list of works on disability in the ancient world. it's very cool!!

disability theory/crip theory

Keywords For Disability Studies (book, edited by Rachel Adams, Benjamin Reiss, and David Serlin) - this series of essays can be really helpful in situating yourself. i find them occasionally a bit oversimplified, but overall they're pretty good, especially if you're new to the field.

Beginning With Disability: A Primer (book, edited by Lennard Davis) - this is another helpful way to situate yourself! i haven't read all of it, but i found the introduction pretty informative for dipping your toes into disability studies :-)

Disability Goes Cultural: The Cultural Model of Disability as an Analytical Tool (book chapter, by Anne Waldschmidt ) [open access on jstor here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv1xxs3r.5] - this article to me has its flaws but ultimately contains what i think is the most useful model for articulating & analyzing disability in the ancient world.

books/articles on greece and rome

truthfully, this is the danger zone for me as a latinist, who finds a lot of stuff supposedly on greece and rome to ultimately be about greece. further, i have bones to pick with these books, but they remain either the best we've got or otherwise foundational:

Mental Disorders in the Classical World (book, ed. William V. Harris) very medical, but still kind of interesting to look at and i haven't found anything better?

The Eye of the Beholder: Deformity and Disability in the Graeco-Roman World (book, Robert Garland) the foundational work but i kind of dislike it, tbh.

Prosthetics and Assistive Technology in Ancient Greece and Rome (book, Jane Drycott) i haven't read much of this yet, but i like drycott and this is going to be my post graduation treat!

Life as a Cyclops: Mythology and the Mockery of the Visually Impaired (article, Jane Drycott) really enjoyed!

Why does classical reception need disability studies? (article, Hannah Silverblank and Marchella Ward) i found parts of this preachy and wasn't super pleased with the thoroughness of the scholarship, but here we are!

A Cultural History of Disability in Antiquity (book, ed. Christian Laes) i don't like laes much but i found some chapters of this really enjoyable

Disability Studies and the Classical Body (book, ed. Ellen Adams) NOT OUT YET!!!!! but very excited for it.......

books & articles on greece

ancient greece has way more scholarship when it comes to disability, or at least this is my experience. i'm less interested in greece, but i still have a lot of articles and books i like + some i know are integral to the field. this is kind of an eclectic list of things i know are Important vs just neat lmao:

The Staff Of Oedipus (book): truthfully, i've only ever read the chapter on blindness (which i enjoyed!). it's not a perfect book, but it's so foundational and can be pretty interesting

The Discourse of Disability in Ancient Greece (article) - one of my favorite articles! i love rereading this :-) i think it's got some super interesting analysis on lysias 24 and the word ἀδύνατος. really cool if you're interested in the construction of "disability" as an identity.

Hephaestus the Hobbling Humorist: The Club-Footed God in the History of Early Greek Comedy (article) - i really enjoyed this article because of how it presents hephaestus, tbqh. im not sure how good it is – dying to hear from hellenists about it, actually – but hephaestus as funny because he's disabled (but not in an ableist way) was very interesting.

"Breathe Upon Us an Even Flame": Hephaestus, History, and the Body of Rhetoric (article) – in all honesty, i don't like this article very much, but what dolmage is doing is super interesting (trying to reconsider hephaestus as a figure), and so i included it. worth taking a look at.

Temporary versus Long-term Madness (article) - this article was a lot of fun for me.

books & articles on rome

full disclosure, i'm a latinist. i love rome. there's less out there but i have so, so much more to say about it. some good places to start:

Approaching Disabilities a Capite ad Calcem: Hidden Themes in Roman Antiquity (book, edited by C.F. Goodey, Christian Laes, and M. Lynn Rose) - this has some problems; i hate christian laes a lot but he's very good at citing lots of ancient examples! overall, the individual essays in this make it better than laes' own book, but they are disjointed.

Disabilities and the Disabled in the Roman World: A Social and Cultural History (book, by Christian Laes) - did i mention i hate christian laes? i don't like how he writes about disability, and at the same time he's incredibly prolific and good at citing ancient sources, so he's incredibly useful. read him if you want ancient examples, but be wary of how he talks about disability, because i think he fails as an abled person to think of disability as anything but bad.

Heroes and Outcasts: Ambiguous Attitudes Towards Impaired and Disfigured Roman Veterans (article, by Van Lommel) - i don't remember how situated van lommel is in disability studies, but i found this article & his work in general on roman veterans interesting enough to include.

there's so, so much more out there! this is just a taste! i tried to be conservative so as not to overwhelm, and even then this reading list is huge. i'm sure in a couple months i'll want to revamp this post lmao but i wanted it to be out there so people can at least see it esp since i promised to write this months ago. disability studies and classics is SO much fun and so novel and so exciting. so much to learn! so much to talk about! if you're interested in a specific topic, i can see if i can help you find more on it, but please keep in mind im currently only a student :-)

i will be honest i do check obsessively for feedback the first day or two that i post a fic until it gets to an acceptable level of engagement and then i stop checking, it depends on the fic/fandom because i write for so many, but if its a new fandom i’ll check like crazy haha unfortunately i am insane

my favourite book continues to be tsoa! i just really love it sm. theres an argument to be made about the characters of course but the writing and the lore, itself actually, is just so beautiful. like the setup to the anguish and tragedy was exhilarating that the moment you get to their deaths, it just shatters you too. i cant stop rereading it that my book is annotated to hell now LMAO and the pages are so worn down

my favourite movie is atwow! it used to be cloudy w a chance of meatball LOL but god atwow took my breath away. the aesthetics are so so beautiful and the concept may not be as original (adapting to alien territory, being accepted by their people) but the attention to details make it such a vivid world. like the language, the songs, the culture!! and just such vast fauna and flora?? im in looove (…and jake is just fine as hell)

my favourite song is so tricky bc like how can i ever choose??? that said, i did LMAO but um rn my favourite song (the one i keep coming back to when my mind’s just so overwhelmed and i need to drown out my thoughts) is hypnosis by sleep token! the instrumentals are so reverberating that it snaps me out of my funk

fave album is meliora by the band ghost. theres not a single song that i skip, but also theres just heavy bass in this one so im actually addicted <33

I am FERAL over your newest fic OH MY WORD???? I love everything about it, I love tighnaris protectiveness and cleverness and his balance of not fussing too much outwardly over Cyno in this public setting but also then expertly stepping in when enough is enough! So wonderful, and when they are alone and he softens around sick Cyno I just- I melted fully. It was so fluffy and endearing 🥺

I felt like Cynos illness was captured really well too, a great example of an implied both ends situation that’s not at all graphic or uncomfy but perfectly captures what kind of sickness Cyno is dealing with. Also like, I love the concept of that combo emeto and implied because it’s truly MAXIMUM vulnerability and while Tighnari isn’t bothered (concerned im sure, but not at all bothered) this combo for Cyno PLUS the setting being so high stakes, he’s in his own personal hell. I’m honesty proud of him for asking to leave because sometimes you gotta know when to tap out 😭

this was So GOOD!! I can’t wait for the late notice sequel even more now but I will be reading this many more times between now and then hehehe

I'm also proud of Cyno for recognizing when it was time to leave!! I'm not sure he would have if Tighnari weren't there. The more I write him, the more I feel that Cyno really listens to Tighnari and follows his advice/instruction/etc about important things, even when he perhaps doesn't want to. He trusts Tighnari's judgement so something would have to go really wrong for him to contradict that. Something something respect and trust and even the bravery of putting your faith in someone else idk!! They have unconditional positive regard for each other imo and I love that for them. Sorry for the rant, this triggered feelings, apparently

↳ Fine Print by Hinalilly Such a cute and in character pre-relationship Valentine’s Day fic ;;;; I love them.

↳ Seven days of him just make me weak by frankenjoly Just wholesome assorted sskk snippets, I can always feel myself physically melt reading this.

↳ my pretty baby holds me down by ChaSeuBao but specifically Chapter 2: While the Other is "Asleep" Tbh I just feel this could perfectly happen in canon. They're just as immature and impulsive and in love as they act in the manga, and it's perfect. Post-canon fics where Atsushi and Akutagawa have matured and grown into proper men are v v good but fics where they still act childish and dumb because they never had a childhood they could grow out of are v v good too. Get together fic.

↳ the only exception by dextergrif I've reread this so many times avbkavkvcqbwsl opposite to the one above, it's nice to see a more mature version of Atsushi and Akutagawa who've slowly worked out of their traumas to be a better version of themselves!! I adore sskk being friends before getting together because ~they're the only ones who get each other~. Enemies to friends to lovers is good. Get together fic.

↳ someone to share the silence by UnicornFlowers Idk this is just one of the best fics I've ever read and so so beautifully written I'm sobbing. Such a good enstablished-relationship Akutagawa character study and sskk navigating their relationship 🤧🤧 On touch-repulsed Akutagawa and touch-starved Atsushi who's perfectly respectful of his boyfriend's boundaries. AND AKUTAGAWA CRYING that is SO good

↳ makeshift gauge by moderndaycain The post-doa arc sskk reunion we deserve (pre-relationship)

↳ Five Times Atsushi Was Hugged and One Time He Gave a Hug & Five Times Akutagawa Cuddled Atsushi And One Time He Asked For Hugs by why_cant_turtles_fly I feel it's only fair to mention these two fics together? The first one is more of a gen fic but you should read it anyway, it's so good!! Op's characterization is amazing and their fics so heartwarming ngggghhhh see ask under this

↳ How to Tame a Tiger's Hair by Mississippi_moon I think about this fic an unhealthy amount. Getting-together, friends sskk who still kinda act like kids in love. I love Akutagawa in this, I love how he speaks like someone who's worked hard to get rid of a fucked up mindset.

↳ midnight, somewhere by hybridsunshine This is so gooood I love sskk atypical getting-together events because nothing about them is typical and they speak a language that is only theirs

↳ split lips, soft teeth by wildsuns You know when a fic is so overwhelmingly good you feel like you need a month to recover

↳ guardian by fwootbat Just read this yesterday night and it was so cute!!! Also very in-character according to how they act in canon. Get together fic.

you know just what i need — this is the longest fic i’ve written (& posted) in a long time! & while having reread it recently there are a few things i would have done differently / things i think could have used more editing, i’m still v proud of it! (& probably judging it too harshly bc, yknow. own worst critic, & all)

in a diner at midnight — this verse is SO self-indulgent & probably not the most IC thing i’ve ever written but it also has the honor of being the first batfic i ever posted. &, self indulgent or not, i have put a lot of thought into the choices i’ve made for it. (altho like the above, there are changes i would make now! tho this time in the vein of, ik more about things now/have thought more about certain aspects & would do it differently. but!)

& then this one is the hardest to pick ^^; it’s a toss-up between a plateful of love & drape me in your warmth. the latter bc i reread this one recently & with the exception of a typo i enjoyed it a lot?? like?? no critical comments, so that’s nice. & then the first bc it just makes me happy.

(also i cannot talk abt writing i’m proud of without at least a passing mention of queen of blood, an original piece that just kind of spilled out in response to a prompt lol)

e. What character do you identify with most? Is there a certain fic of yours that captures these qualities particularly well?

i wouldn't say that there's a specific character who i identify with the most as much as all of my characters end up with little pieces of me in them. like in haw, the pressure matthew feels to live the kind of life his family/the world expects is something i super relate to. and i'm also a very anxious person so his anxiety in that fic was something that i identified with, even though the way his manifests and the ways he deals with it are not quite the same as mine. or in tnno, dylan's wariness and resistance to forgiving someone he loves who hurt him very badly — definitely something i identify with. part of the reason i'm enjoying writing my girl!quinn fic so much is that she has a lot of issues around navigating femininity that are similar to my own! that is something i really love about writing, tbh, is being able to take pieces of myself and kind of filter them through a new experience and see them through my characters' eyes.

k. Do you have a guilty pleasures in fic (reading or writing)?

not really, honestly, because i don't really believe in guilty pleasures? like if i like it then i like it, i don't need to be weird about it 😂 i am cringe but i am free, etc. and i think fic is a medium that's uniquely suited to people just trying shit and having fun and leaning into self-indulgence, and i love to see that. i briefly thought of cisswap/rule 63 as a guilty pleasure but then i decided to lean into it instead. i guess some things that could go here are like, i really love when a fic leans HARD into hurt/comfort. i love when people write weird and/or super self-indulgent porn. i really enjoy a slightly fucked-up power dynamic. given how much i hate to see hockey injuries irl perhaps i should not love a good career-ending injury fic so much but what can i say. the heart wants what it wants.

v. Are there certain comments you’ve received on your stories that have stuck with you?

yes for sure! first of all i go back to reread my comments fairly often — at least a few times a year, especially if i'm struggling with writing — so i've read a lot of them a bunch of times, which makes them memorable. especially the longer ones or partituclarly thoughtful ones, when people really dig into the writing/themes of the fic or share very personal ways the fic resonated with them (i got a couple of these re: how matthew comes out to brady in haw, which did make me a little weepy. also some really lovely comments on tnno from people who have gone through complicated friend breakups.) someone left a super super long comment on tnno once breaking it down literary analysis style that i think about SO much because it was so fun and touching to read.

Z - Major Character Death-do you ever write/read it? is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?

oh dear, uh, me and mcd have a complicated relationship. love her, but also despise her.

idk if i can write character death in my fics. i would be more upset bc they’re my little babies that i’ve latched on to since i saw them on screen. i would write character deaths for OCs tho lol they’re free game

i will read one-shots with mcd. will not read mcd if it’s a multi-chapter fic bc i will get attached and i will be inconsolable later. however, if i am assured that one of my favorite characters or ships won’t die, i’ll read. even the temporary character death tag will have me reading the most gut-wrenching and heartbreaking pics if i know my babes will come out of it alive (maybe not ok but alive).

basically, i need that reassurance that the ending will be a positive one

for characters i can’t tolerate dying? well, wish i could say arthur but the show beat us to it lol, so every christmas all i get is gifs upon gifs of him dying (spoilers, i guess?). does wonders to the heart.

@theoceanismyinkwell always a slay. saved so many of his fics. doing a reread of regression to the mean and OH MY GOD T^T just as beautiful as the 1st read

with my dr geyer fic that began bc i wanted to explore characters. the plot was already given to me, i just expanded on dynamics that jeffy man ignored. and tbh my merlin fic, i just wanted to give Merlin a magic friend. someone who wouldn’t die after 1 episode or leave when they both realize they have opposing views or whatever. i wanted to give Merlin a friend and, damnit! a friend he shall have!

however with my og wip, that’s neither plot nor character. i began with the world. then characters then themes then plot.

I just wanted to let you know that you are one of the only writers I’ve seen do a time travel fic in an intensely narratively satisfying way. I know you don’t really plan on updating it anymore (which is so valid!! I’m just so glad I got to read *anything* from you, you’re so talented!!!). There are virtually no plotholes, you chose the perfect character to voice the narrative (he wouldn’t give away too much, so it leaves the reader in suspense), and you write the most beautiful character relationships!! Your attention to detail and understanding of the effects of trauma supplement the narrative so well!!! Both the subtle and large-scale effects were interwoven so well. And the suspense!!!! Oh my gosh!! The double dramatic irony of us the readers knowing things Aizawa doesn’t and Aizawa knowing things the rest of the characters don’t constantly kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s one of the only fics I can reread and find new details in every time. Every single character is written with so much love and care, it’s so beautiful and impressive!!!!! It’s such a kind story, overall :,)

There are so many more things I could say, but I think I’ve left enough comments on the fic itself and would probably go waaaaay over the word limit for a tumblr ask.

Time travel fics (tbh time travel fixits in general, there’s a bunch of kcomics that have the same trope and I live for them too) are so near and dear to my heart, and they’re my go-to “things are hard, I need something that makes me feel like mistakes don’t have to be forever,” comfort reads, and it really means so much to me that you enjoyed my take on one so much. And also that you picked up on a lot of my deliberate choices! The double dramatic irony, picking Aizawa (who admittedly is my fave bnha character so I was probs always gonna pick him BUT he also made a great unreliable-but-predictable narrator), and the trauma affecting things subtly and obviously… Sometimes I wonder how much of what I write gets across to readers, because I’m v much a “every choice I made, every word I picked, they all had a reason even if I don’t explicitly say what that reason is,” kinda writer, and it’s both amazing and humbling to have those details picked up on by a reader tbh 💕

I've read the new chapter of Honest Lie, and I need to hug both Rosalie and Astarion, omg. Poor Rosalie, she was so scared and upset of having a broken heart again, and how good it is that Astarion fought to put his feelings into the words, to be heard, finally. It was so sweet and tender, and I ran to reread Party Favours immediately to get more angst where Astarion hoped Rosalie would catch up and act on her feelings, and I'm just 😭 You write them being miserable so well, even if I really want to see them finally be happy, but it's such a long journey for both of them, and I'm here for the full ride. Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️ It's so lovely, I adore it, and I'll be living in Astarion/Rosalie re-reading circle for a while now. Again.

u’ve got me interested in hoffstrahm now! what r some good hoffstrahm fics from marks pov vs peters pov? also how do you think people tell them apart writing style wise bc i feel like they r similar (i have read no fics i don’t trust going on ao3 blind without recs so even just the basic fics everyone has read are good to rec)

So I haven't actually read as many fics, because I tend to just reread the ones that I like a lot lol. That being said, I do have some recs! All of these are actually from Peter’s perspective, that seems to be the one most people enjoy writing from when it comes to Hoffstrahm, myself included.

I will say beforehand to answer your other question, as someone writing fics from both their perspectives, I think the biggest difference is that Hoffman is a man of Action, vs Strahm being a man of Words. And what I mean by that is that if you have a dialogue going between the two of them, Strahm’s going to be the one carrying the conversation more by a long shot. The guy never shuts up, both internally and externally. It’s just a part of his more neurotic nature. Hoffman meanwhile is a Lot less verbose, and doesn’t talk as much compared to Strahm. His thoughts don’t get externalized as often, and he’s more likely to just Do something rather than Say something. It makes for an interesting time writing for both of them tbh, and presents unique challenges either way.

With that said tho, here’s my list of favorite fics for the two of them that I’d recommend to you:

“I’ve done this before (show me your teeth)” by nucodiangelo is one of the first one’s I ever read for Hoffstrahm and one I come back to quite frequently. It’s a longer one shot that diverges from canon with the events of Saw V and goes into Peter’s internal struggle with accepting what he knows about Mark and what he’s willing to let slide in order to have a relationship with him. Truly represents just what I love in a more canon compliant relationship with these two.

Literally every Hoffstrahm fic by Doztoevsky is Amazing in it’s own way, but I particularly recommend the “Street Cats” series and the one shot “I’ll run (but I’ll come running).” “Street Cats” is a very fun exploration about how things could go with some canon divergence past the point of Saw V and onward and includes some great domestic slice of life stuff intermingled with everything else. (@/Jadenvargen also drew some truly stunning artwork for the series, and if that summary doesn’t sell you on reading it, the art will.) “I’ll run” meanwhile is a one shot about Perez interrogating Strahm about his relationship with Hoffman and what all he knew about him while they were together, very good little character study piece for Peter.

“Cosmo’s Top Ten Dating Tips” is a five part series by the wonderful @carouselcometh and is a series that’s both funny, but also has some really really interesting insight into how neurotic Peter Strahm can be, and it’s one of my favorites for that reason. It definitely helped to inspire how I’ve gone about writing him for my own fics. Remy has a unique voice for writing Hoffman that I haven’t really seen with anyone else either which makes it a very fun read compared to everyone else.

Last but not least, I will put “Strahm Dies At The End” by @romanromulus on this list as well. I’m putting it last because it does come with a warning: Unlike the others on this list, this fic is considerably Extremely heavy, and if you chose to read it you need to heed every warning that’s tagged on it. It goes to some very dark places, and is not at all a lighthearted or even Nice fic for Strahm and Hoffman. It’s fucked up, and it doesn’t romanticize that point either. But the fic as a whole is a Wonderful case study on both Strahm and Hoffman as characters and gets really deep into some detailed meta on who they are as people thanks to their circumstances, and it’s a really well done tragedy story as well, which I always like reading. Hell, my last art piece was an illustration of a scene from this story, that tells you how much of an impact it left on me. It’s definitely not a story for the feint of heart, but if you can handle some touchy subject matter, I do recommend it.
