I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?

Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?

Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

#i don't read any fic about the pairing i'm writing about when i'm working on a long wip #both so i don't second guess myself by comparison and so that if it winds up similar to something else i can just be like great minds etc!! #i can definitely get demoralized if someone writes something similar to something to wanted to write before i get a chance to publish it #which is pretty normal i think? bc you feel like ppl won't be as excited for YOUR thing #even if i know logically that most readers ARE like hell yeah two cakes! #AND even though i know logically that people writing about the same characters/pairings are gonna naturally hit on similar themes 😅 #idk i think part of it is that as a person who's been plagiarized i never want people to feel plagiarized #+ never want people to think I'M copying someone. you know?? #this definitely all ties into my complicated feelings about credit + inspiration in a collaborative fandom environment #but since i only write something like once a year i can't afford to be too picky about my own output anyway ig 😂
