Hmm... what about... Can you write a ficlet in which Dan gets amnesia?

I'm more used to writing longer stories, to be honest. This one required some extra thought on how to keep it short without bloating it. I think keeping some details vague helped a lot.

Who knows how an amnesiac Dan would behave or do?

It burns. It burns.

Dan inhaled deeply, his body shuddered violently as he did so. It panged with a burning ache that ate away at him. He was aware he was stuck… somewhere. Dan leaned forward to get his bearings, only to fling himself back into place once his head began to spin.

A pounding throbbed throughout his skull.

Focus. He needed to focus.

Dan’s head fell back, rough and rugged material dug into him. Another, shakier breath. Broken, cragged shapes amassed around him. Twisted and spiraling.

He tried to close his eyes. Wait for the chaos to fade, for his body to be sturdy enough to get up without falling over. Dan grimaced, his fingers dug into the hard material that surrounded him. A piercing pain stabbed through his head, a faint ringing took over his train of thought.

Dan groaned softly. Smoldering pain surged down the side of his body. The ringing pain ran to the forefront of his mind, clouding any coherence he had left.

Out. He needed to get out. Away from… his thoughts. Too muddled, barely strung together. Missing.

Dan heaved himself out of his spot, his body hunched over. His arm dangled awkwardly with a bright green liquid gushing down. A concurrent of agony and numbness weighed him down, a sickening warmth sunk into him. Sweat disgustingly stuck to his face.

Slowly, Dan began to walk forwards. His hand held his shoulder as to not aggravate it with his motions. His feet shuffled along the dusty ground, kicking up small clouds. He was faintly aware of the green liquid dripping off of his hand. He could… smell it.

A dull light streaked above him, highlighting the silhouettes of huge… piles of debris? His muddled mind struggled to find a thought, a blank, static image played out before his eyes. Something… important. Dan had no idea what it was.

It was the same everywhere he looked. A flattened landscape that was ‘here’, there was no ‘where’ as far as Dan could see. Nothing of familiarity came to mind. He had apparently been buried within the wreckage. Quiet, sturdy breaths blew out of his mouth. Discomfort dug into him.

His head throbbed the more he tried to think about it. Seemingly reprimanding him for thinking about it too much.

A hot flash lit up his insides. Dan grunted in effort to swallow down the sick feeling, his limbs wavered. Through the cloudiness and the sweat, he managed to ease his form against a sturdy structure, and leaned back in relief. Warm breaths of relief escaped him, never mind his injured shoulder that ached in retaliation. The ache pulsed through him, it almost brought Dan to a lull.

Dan wasn’t sure how long he spent in that position. Exhausted to the point of sickness, finding relief hiding in the ruins. Hiding like some…

Animal.

The word stuck out to him. It… did seem to apply to him, in a way.

Dan closed his eyes to rest his mind a bit. His eyes were sore from trying to take everything in, make sense of where he was. His head continued to pound, albeit more dully.

Before he knew it, he sensed… someone in front of him. A wariness that set him on edge. His eyes snapped open.

An unfamiliar woman stood before him, decked out in a red suit. He didn’t see much else, the details blurred together.

Dull red eyes stared in confusion.

Dan found himself staring down the barrel of a gun.

A brisk (yet endearing) knock at the door made Andi smile to herself. That was her, alright. She did a final once-over at the living room just to make sure it was just how she wanted it; the heat was on, there were throw blankets on the couch, the TV was on (like it was waiting to play a show)...everything looked good.

And when she heard that familiar “Hello? Andi?,” she smiled the tiniest bit more.

“Coming! Have some patience, jeez!” She called back as she feverishly walked to the door. No use keeping her waiting, after all. She opened the door, being met with Val’s warm smile. “Long time no see, huh, Scott?”

The older woman rolled her eyes endearingly. “That’s your own fault. I’ve been asking for months now if you want to come visit us and the only responses I get are-” She then cleared her throat and did a bad impression of Andi’s voice. “‘I have so much work to do, I’m busy, the portal thingy is busted, blah blah blah.’”

“You really have to get my voice right one day. You sound like a cat that just started smoking.”

Val laughed at the absurd simile before pulling her into a hug. “Ah, I missed your realism.” She only replied, before stepping inside and whistling in appreciation at the apartment. “You really went overboard, huh?”

“Sue me.” Andi only replied, then took the bomber jacket Val was shrugging off and hung it up. She then took note of the plastic bag (and caught a glimpse of two glass bottles) in her hand and looked at her with disapproval. “Did you forget I’m not old enough to drink yet?”

“Keep your pants on, one’s non-alcoholic cider.” Val simply replied, holding up the bottle to show the label. “I’m not that stupid.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Uncalled for.”

Andi snickered in response as she went to grab two glasses from the kitchen. “Make yourself comfortable, I’ll grab some glasses and snacks for us.”

“Will do!” Val smiled softly as she watched her leave, then slipped off her Doc Martens and put them aside as she sat on the couch, putting the bottles on the coffee table. Still in good shape, though she internally grimaced at the potential dirt that could get on the carpet.

Before her mind could get the better of her, though, she saw Andi balancing two wine glasses and a charcuterie board, making her jump up and rush over to her. “What are you thinking, carrying all that around?” She asked, taking the glasses and setting them next to the bottles.

“I’m thinking I want to be productive and not have to make two trips.” Andi replied, but did gave her a “thanks” as she set the board down, then grabbed a small chunk of gouda cheese and popped it in her mouth.

Val only rolled her eyes as she popped open the bottles, pouring a glass of wine for herself and some cider for Andi.

Now the fun could begin.

After a few hours, the charcuterie board was empty and while Andi was on her second glass of non-alcoholic cider, Val was still nursing her glass of wine. What was the same was that the two of them were laughing at an anecdote that the younger woman had told.

“I’m amazed that he hasn’t managed to blow himself up yet.” Val commented as she took a small sip of her wine. "I mean, he’s got you so there’s that, but seriously, he gives off some major mad scientist vibes.”

Andi snickered and nodded in agreement. “He’s gotten better since we’ve been together.”

“Yeah, now you two can be mad scientists together.”

“You realize I’ve accepted that moniker since I was 6, right?”

Val only chuckled. “I completely believe that.” She remarked, then pursed her lips at hearing her phone go off. “Hm?” When she flipped her phone open and saw the message from Raph, though, she smiled to herself. “Ah, just Raph.” She quickly typed a response back, before closing it again and looking back at Andi - who was now smirking at her. “What?”

“You make fun of me for being a, quote unquote, lover girl with Don, and yet you’re the same way with Raph. Hypocrisy much?”

“But there’s a difference though. You’re a dumb teenager still finding her place in the world, and I’m an established woman with a career.”

“So that differentiates our love lives how?”

“Because you have a more, uh…ideal view of love. Plus, Donnie’s your first love, so you kinda got lucky. Me though? I’ve had relationships before Raph, so I’m a little more realistic with my relationship. Take the good with the bad, all that jazz. Besides, me and Raph aren’t as openly sappy and cutesy as you two.”

Andi huffed and glared playfully at her. “And that’s a problem?”

Val giggled a bit as she set her glass down. “Nope. It’s just worth pointing out. Raph doesn’t call me something cheesy like Donnie does to you.”

“It makes me smile, okay?”

The older woman put a hand up in surrender, still stifling a giggle. “Again, not sayin’ there’s anything wrong with it. It’s just funny.”

“I’m this close to escorting you out of my apartment.”

Val only smiled cheekily at her as she finished her glass.

And before they knew it, it was nearly midnight.

“Uh, Andi?” Val called out as she checked the clock hanging in the kitchen. When she got a ‘hm?’ from the younger girl who was in the bathroom, she softly bit her lip as she asked, “You, uh…you mind if I stay here tonight? I don’t really feel safe going out this late.”

When Andi emerged from the bathroom, her hair tied back in pigtails and wearing a white tank top and pink flannel pants for pajamas, she noticed the hint of anxiety in Val’s eyes and smiled reassuringly. “Sure. You want to borrow something to sleep in?”

“Um, sure. Anything’s fine, but I’d like something loose and comfy.”

Andi only smiled again as she retreated to her room, digging through her closet for something. Something…not pink, or lacy. More specifically, something that Val would actually wear.

And then she saw it. It was something from her dad, but it was clean and in good condition. A black t-shirt with ‘8 Beats a Second’ in red text on the breast pocket. She smiled sadly at the memory; they were her dad’s favorite band, and she could remember at least one car ride where he played their first album for her.

She yanked it off the hanger and held it tight to her chest for a few seconds, letting everything wash over her. Being young and listening to her dad’s favorites while he educated her on what each song meant, all while she was so encapsulated by the rhythm, lyrics and-

“Uh, Andi? Are you good in there?”

Val’s voice interrupted her, shaking her out of her daydream. “Yeah, sorry! Just a minute!” She called back, then found some fuzzy black pajama pants to accompany the shirt. She then made her way back to the older woman in the living room, then gave her the clothes. “Hopefully that’s good. I tried to go with stuff you’d actually wear.”

Val smiled at that and nodded. “Yeah, it’s great. Thanks.” She was about to head into the bathroom to change when Andi stopped her. “Yeah?”

“Um, be careful with that shirt, okay? It, um…has a lot of memories for me.”

Meeting her eyes, the woman could see a bit of sadness. Probably something she wasn’t willing to talk about…

So instead, she smiled more assuringly and nodded. “You got it.” She then headed into the bathroom to change, leaving Andi smiling softly at the bathroom door.

“Thanks.”
