Hiya!! Can I have a matchup for Bungo Stray Dogs and maybe Attack on Titan? My self appointed nickname for the internet is Bunny or Julii and my pronouns are she/her. I am a leo and a INFP. I’m 5’1” (I think, I’m short but it only bugs me when it’s inconvenient. IE: high shelves.) I’m plus sized and pale with fluffy honey colored hair with natural dark brown roots. Update on the therapy stuff so far

So I had my fourth appointment a couple of days ago and I kind of want to make a post about each one but still haven’t actually done it, so...gonna just make a long-ass post now about what it’s been like so far and hopefully I’ll keep up with it in the future. Right now we’re meeting weekly, and I really like her so far! She seems super nice and I feel comfortable talking to her. She doesn’t use a bunch of therapy jargon, platitudes, etc., and something else I really like is that she’s never tries to tell me what/who I am or what I should do? Like, she seems less interested in trying to tell me exactly what my sexuality is and what I should and shouldn’t do, and more interested in helping me figure out what I genuinely want. I can’t remember if this was in the second or third appt, but at one point she said something about how people often talk about how we should take risks and stuff - but it’s also ok if taking risks isn’t what you want. She said you should take risks if that’s what’s best for you personally, but it doesn’t have to be the case for everyone. If I want to try working things out with my bf because of the security of being with someone who I’m compatible with and close to (as opposed to taking the risk of exploring things with women) there’s nothing wrong with that - what we need to do is figure out if that’s truly what will make me happy. Anyway, below are details on the four appointments I’ve had so far:

2/25/20 - The first appt was sort of just a foundational kind of thing - telling her why I’m seeking therapy, some basics about why I’m questioning my sexuality, stuff about leaving religion and when/if I should tell my family about that, etc. We talked a little about compulsory heterosexuality (which I’m familiar with) and she asked me to research it in the next week and see if anything about it applies to me. (She usually gives people “homework assignments” of things to do or think about until the next session).

3/3/20 - We talked about a conversation I had with my dad a few days before about queer people and the Bible. The short version is that he and I started talking about it, I mentioned some of the arguments I’ve heard about why the Bible might not actually condemn homosexuality (without necessarily saying if I agreed with them or not, and definitely not mentioning that I no longer give a fuck about what the Bible says), he basically just said that he doesn’t think those arguments hold up. However, he also doesn’t believe it’s his place to try to decide who’s going to hell and who isn’t, and also that he doesn’t think it makes sense to expect people who don’t believe the Bible is true to follow what it teaches. So in other words, queer Christians are living in sin but he doesn’t think they’re going to hell any more than Christians who struggle with other sins, and there’s no point in telling people to be celibate if they aren’t Christian. He says he wishes he could accept queer people but can’t do it in good conscience, and I believe him - tbh I’m 99% certain he'd be a great ally if not for the fucking Bible. Anyway, we also talked about comp het stuff - the main ones that seem apply to me are liking unattainable men (celebrities, fictional characters, boys who didn’t like me back), never liking the idea of marrying a man (assumed I’d want to eventually), generally liking men that are somewhat “feminine” from a traditional standpoint (long hair, no beards, etc.), and thinking that women are objectively more attractive then men in general. This one is really interesting to me because I feel like I have so few childhood signs of being queer, but I do actually remember thinking this as a teenager. I remember being frustrated that it seemed like there were so few attractive guys but lots of attractive girls, and it was kind of unfair that guys had so many more options.

3/10/20 - Last week I was supposed to think about the different crushes I’ve had on boys in the past and try to figure out why I was drawn to them. I looked at some old journals to help me remember stuff, which was kind of fun. The first crush I can remember was when I was 9 (fun fact: that guy is apparently now in prison? so I think I dodged a bullet there). The last one was in 2015, possibly through early 2016...so it’s been a while. It was kind of hard to remember how it felt to have a crush on someone, but I do remember it wasn’t too hard to get over them. Like I know I was sad about it when I realized they’d never like me back or whatever, but unless I’m remembering wrong I don’t think I was ever upset for a really long time or anything? I never knew any of the guys very well, and I’m not sure what exactly drew me to them. Mostly just that I thought they were attractive and I just generally felt drawn to them for some reason, but I never had the chance to actually form any kind of emotional connection to them. Another thing we talked about was core values and how they play into making decisions. We tried to pinpoint my top four out of this huge list, which was...kind of difficult, but I ended up with Personal Fulfillment, Kindness, Honesty, and Nature. This week I’m supposed to think about how making different decisions might look based on these core values.

3/17/20 - We talked about a few different things this time. We went over the core values and how they might work with relationship decisions. At one point I told her about this girl from church youth group at high school I potentially felt attraction to this one time? The problem is I can’t remember it very clearly, but I just remember liking the way she looked and it must have been similar to how I used to feel when looking at cute boys, bc I do remember thinking something along the lines of “well I probably just like her clothes/I’m comparing my body to hers and even if I was somehow a lesbian (which I’m not, lol can you imagine? crazy idea) I would never act on something like that, so it doesn’t matter anyway.” It stands out to me because I can’t remember any other times from when I was younger that I was specifically attracted to a girl - I can just remember a few vague instances with girls I passed by on the street or whatever where I was “comparing myself to another girl’s body.” I also told her about how I’m watching Ocean’s 8 mostly for the eye candy (I felt it was relevant lol). Also we discussed the way I’ve been sort of semi-identifying as lesbian in my head and how I sort of...do little secretive pride things? Like I have a couple of rainbow socks I’ll wear if I’m feeling especially gay one day, etc. Then at the end talked a bit about how, when I’m talking to her about how I feel and verbally processing things, I tend to kind of just barely mention the things I’m anxious about regarding exploring my sexuality and then move onto something else - so she wants me to think about that more this week and try to pinpoint the specific things I’m afraid of.

Things to think about:

Week 1. Research compulsory heterosexuality and see which things might apply to me.

Week 2. Think about past crushes on guys - what things about them attracted me? How hard were they to get over? lol not very hard

Week 3. Think about core values and how they might play into future decisions, particularly about relationships.

Week 4 (current). Examine/let myself feel anxiety about exploring sexuality - what I am afraid of, specifically?

yup, lots of times. the first time i went was in LA with my GSA club in high school. it was like me, two other girls, and my mom who was the club coordinator or something.

HORRIBLE. she wasn’t my type and i didn’t find her attractive in any way but i was dancing with her at a school dance which was innocuous, but then she kissed me in front of everyone and i wanted to die of embarrassment.

in that many words, i don’t think so. in university i discovered one of my childhood friends quietly came out as lesbian. i set her up with her gf and they’ve been together four years now!

not really. i’ve been really sick the last five years and haven’t had time to meet other LA lesbians.

do you have any older lgbt+ people you look up to?

my great uncle/godfather. he lived with his life partner on his little farm and it’s nice to have a family member and a latin@ as a gay role model. i think of this one other older man i met from time to time, too. i went to an open forum hosted by a diplomat on how to get into civil service and i asked him if he knew if it was possible to be a diplomat while being gay and he said he and his partner never had a problem with it and even though i was in university it blew me away that gay people grew up and had lives.

do you identify with butch/femme labels?

not as much anymore since i discovered they don’t mean just fashion styles. if i had to pick, lipstick lesbian.

who’s your favourite fictional wlw?

don’t make me pick between Carol and Therese!

hey. asia... do you have any modern au coming out thoughtz?

(sry this took a while to answer bc i had to think about it lol)

tbh i could see so many different possibilities being in character, esp depending on the details of the au. But like, assuming this AU is as close to canon as possible while still being set in the present w/ current identity politics and a gay community etc, yk both still have traumatic histories, griffith still has a dream that requires marrying a woman, etc etc, I can maybe throw out a few ideas. tho again like, nothing set in stone.

I guess ultimately I really want them to be each others’ realizations.

I like the idea of Guts’ being a slow realization that kind of sneaks up on him, where first he realizes that he would absolutely be dtf Griffith and it’s not til after that realization that he figures out that makes him gay. Like I mean he’d fall into that “it’s not guys, it’s just you” cliche but he eventually realizes that no, actually it is men.

He might try experimenting too - like surely it’s just because Griffith looks androgynous, so being with a woman would be better - but nope, doesn’t work.

Might be worth mentioning here (tho i’m sure u already know this) that I hc Guts as gay rather than bi bc Miura did a great job of making his interest in Casca feel super inauthentic to me lol.

Also I think it’s fair to assume that his csa trauma would lead to some discomfort here, but at the same time I don’t think he’d consciously like assume all gay people are predatory or even assume his rapist was gay and not just a pedophile. He might be uncomfortable being checked out in bars at first, and I feel like he’d be prone to worrying that his sexuality makes him specifically more likely to hurt someone bc feeling like a monster is kind of a canon issue he has, but he’s smart and fairly self aware and wouldn’t make it anyone else’s problem for the most part, barring like flashbacks during sex or smthn.

Also he’s tough enough that he’d never really feel like he’s in physical danger with anyone else. So assuming he’s in a good place in his personal life (ie not in a walking disaster “don’t touch me” phase) I don’t think he’d show any discomfort. (And I mean in canon the first time we ever saw him relaxed and happy was while having a water fight with a naked dude who he thought came onto him when they first met a few days earlier. I really don’t think it would be a huge issue.)

And overall I think he’d be fairly low-key about it. He’s gay but it’s just a description to him rather than an identity to build his life around. He wouldn’t be closeted but he wouldn’t be out to everyone in his life like, idk coworkers or w/e. Tho eventually I think everyone would realize because I think he’d kind of want to show Griffith off lol.

Griffith I could see like, simultaneously knowing he’s gay all his life and refusing to fully acknowledge it. He’s gotta achieve a goal which requires a certain image which requires heterosexuality. Maybe he’s not actually attracted to women, whatever, but that doesn’t actually matter as far as he’s concerned.

So with Guts being his realization, what that means is that Guts is the breaking point where Griffith realizes he’d rather have Guts than the dream. Yk, like in canon, but with a) no torture chamber, and b) the addition of this realization leading to the larger realization that he can live as his authentic self and be happy.

Like I’ve mentioned before that in Berserk you have this dichotemy of the dream/het marriage/emotional repression vs guts/emotional expression and yk in a modern AU you can add coming out to emotional expression.

Like we’ve talked about this b4 but I’m saying it again bc I love this idea where Griffith realizing he’s in love with Guts and would rather be in a relationship with him than achieve whatever his modern AU dream is is like a catalyst for dropping the image of respectability and ~finding~ himself. He’d make a bunch of gay friends, start experimenting with more gnc looks, volunteer at pride, go to protests, etc.

Though if his motivations for achieving his dream are similar to canon (mb not the whole for the sake of the dead thing, but yk guilt, to assuage a feeling of inherent worthlessness, to justify things he did to achieve it that he’s ashamed of, w/e) there’s also plenty of room for some angst and drama in between that realization that he wants to give it all up for Guts and embracing a new life. Some “am I selfish/terrible for choosing Guts” soul searching or w/e.

ALSO I feel like modern au griffith could’ve been fairly gnc as a child - wanting to play with girls’ toys, singing along to britney spears, saying he wants to marry the disney princes when he grows up, wanting his hair long, playing dress up in dresses, etc - with some kind of catalyst that hammers home this idea that to get the thing he wants he has to police his behaviour and be like everyone else. this is self indulgent but i just like this concept of like, knowing what you’re about as a kid and then having to unlearn everything you’ve internalized since then. it’s an appealing narrative to me.

And like I could see Griffith’s trauma with Gennon actually affecting him and his opinions wrt sexuality/internalized homophobia more than Guts’ trauma affects Guts, mostly because Gennon was such a goddamn evil gay stereotype in canon, plus Griffith’s own self-loathing compounded w/ the idea that he’s always sort of known he was gay = a secondary motivation for trying to embody the image of a heteronormative ideal, to distance himself from the idea that he’s anything like Gennon. Like Griffith’s trauma comes with a side of effeminate stereotypes and ostentatious homoerotic castle decor, etc. But I don’t think it’s necessary either, like it’s not something I’m super interested in exploring and hey maybe modern AU Gennon is less of an offensive stereotype. and/or Griffith is v socially aware and capable of recognizing that Gennon isn’t representative. w/e, kind of a take it or leave it thing I guess.

Also I’m not really envisioning these 2 concepts (guts and griffith) in the same story lol. Maybe they could fit together but I didn’t really think about it.

And again like, I’m just throwing stuff at the wall lol, not saying this is my Official Take on Sexuality and Characterization or w/e.

7: how long were you questioning for?

pretty much never, i guess. i had crushes on girls since kindergarten, then in 2nd grade i was told girls could only like boys, so i tried my best to be straight even though in my heart i knew i wasn’t. since i couldn’t make myself like boys, i kinda just ignored the idea of liking anyone at all until middle school, when i found out what the word “lesbian” means online. of course, all the stuff i found about lesbians called us disgusting perverts, so i went through many phases of calling myself literally anything else but a lesbian. i’ve only started using the word lesbian specifically in the last few years, especially since i joined an amazing discord group. i love them so much, they’ve helped me feel so proud of being a lesbian <3

8: what’s the most annoying thing straight people do?

exist.

jk lmao, i’m honestly not annoyed by straight people, but i like making jokes as if i am. it’s hard to annoy me in general, i’ve got a high tolerance for that type of stuff. if i have to answer, i hate it when strangers (usually straight men) pry into my sex life, but i’m not really annoyed by that as much as i am creeped out.

9: what do you look for in a girl?

vampirism is my only requirement.

10: if you had to marry someone you know right now, who would you choose?

@lebians bcs i feel they’d be the most able to put up with my bullshit. everyone else would kill me on sight. if only @ireallylikecameras was still single, then when we got married we could put together our 50% employee discounts at BK and get infinite food for free, ending world hunger. i think that’s how it works, but also im gay and therefore bad at math.

hhhh i’d like to pretend i do but tbh i’m not very observant and straight up bad at reading people.

yes and no. i’d rather have been born straight, because it would’ve saved me so much pain, but it’s a few years too late for that lol. if there was a magic pill that could make me straight today, i wouldn’t take it. i’ve been through so much as a lesbian, it means something to me now and i wouldn’t trade that for anything.

I think so. This seems like a weird question cause I can’t talk for how other ppl see me, but really I do think I’m easy going and can get along with most people fairly easily. I’m friends with p much everyone in my new class and ppl say they think I’m friendly and chatty so I think thats my proof lol

I haven’t really ever had a falling out with anyone other than ppl who are homophobes or something.

5. If you were drunk would the person you like take care of you?

Yeah :3 She would. Well she wouldn’t because it would cost her like a bazillion dollars to jump on a plane and fly across the world but she would cause she is lovely, kind and would probably talk me out of anything silly from tumblr messenger lol

Women. Women who are kind, beautiful, strong and skilled. I’d say mostly butch women but that’s only like a 60/40 split tbh X3 Women who know things or who are strong and confident, or who can do amazing things I admire. Ppl who like laughing and don’t mind being silly.

Um? Little Hansy Rilow? Jackass Extraordinaire? Love of my life? Ofc I’ll do as many as I can!! Thanks so much for sending these! I hope you like them and I’m sorry they took me so long! (Also I answered these out of order and towards the end I was running a bit low on steam so there are some answers that are Not So Good mixed in there, sorry)

1. What does their bedroom look like?

I think for the most part it would be tidy. Bed made, desk (mostly) clear, etc. He’s got some laundry on the floor, a couple of books lying about, and his jacket as well as his school things are never put away but everything else is in it’s place.

His desk is by the window so he can make good use of natural light and It’s usually got assignments for school on it as well as whatever books might go along with them when he’s not using it.

He keeps a small collection of books in his room- his favourites. Whatever he’s currently reading is kept on his bedside table and everything else is stacked by his desk but they should be on the shelf in the living room.

He’s a nerd.

2. Do they have any daily rituals?

I don’t think he would, not outside what he needs to do (school). Not unless you count him monologuing while he masturbates as a ritual, I have a feeling that’s a daily thing.

3. Do they exercise, and if so, what do they do? How often?

He does not, he would much rather lounge somewhere comfy with something he finds enjoyable. A book, a person, a puzzle, etc.

4. What would they do if they needed to make dinner but the kitchen was busy?

I can see him being like “Everybody, get out of my way” (This is meant to be read in John Mulaney’s voice from the thing where he followed this with something like “I’m just here to feed my birds”) but I can also see him just clearing enough space for himself and getting to work. I guess it depends on who’s in the kitchen making what and what he’s going to be making. He’s not going to be interrupting someone that’s making cake or pastries just so he can cut vegetables in peace.

5. Cleanliness habits (personal, workspace, etc.)

His parents/governess were somewhat strict about cleanliness when he was a child so he makes an effort to keep himself well groomed, especially when adults are present. No dirt under his fingernails, his clothes and hair are neat etc. He’s less concerned about it when he’s with the other boys and even less when he’s relaxing, either by himself or with Ernst, but he still somewhat pays attention to how much dirt he’s getting on himself or how much work it will take him to make himself look properly presentable before he finds himself around adults again.

I think I got into workspace okay with his bedroom? He’s mostly tidy because he has to be, any disorder in his room can easily be taken care of.

6. Eating habits and sample daily menu

I think he would love sweet things (candy, fruit, berries, etc) and he’s always a slut for baked goods. I have no idea what kind of things ppl usually ate in 1890′s Germany.

7. Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time

He only really considers time wasted if he’s not spending it on something he likes to do or needs to do. So he has no favourite way to waste time, he only feels as though he’s wasting time if he’s bored out of his mind for no good reason.

8. Favorite indulgence and feelings surrounding indulging

Ernst. It really isn’t safe for him to be smooshing booties in a vineyard with another boy but? He’s doing it. And being all poetic about it too ofc, he really likes Ernst.

If he can indulge he will, he loves it. Life’s too short to deny himself pleasure, so long as said pleasure doesn’t harm him and/or get in the way of him becoming a millionaire.

9. Makeup?

None. I can see him maybe trying, or at least wanting to try makeup at some point? Never with anyone around or if there was a chance of someone catching him though. (I’m a sucker for boys in makeup tho and I think modern Hanschen would enjoy makeup. If u want to hear a bit more abt that u know how 2 contact me)

Literature and languages. He loves reading, loves diving into a book and analyzing characters, plot, symbolism, all of it. He loves talking about them as well, he could talk for hours about his favourites. He’s fascinated by other languages and speaks a handful rather fluently as an adult. He probably also enjoys reading the same book but translated into different languages because no translation is exact and it’s always interesting to see a slightly different take on things.

I can also see him having interest in biology? Because science is fascinating and it’s amazing how diverse and intricately designed living things can be.

He talks about the books he likes when he’s jerking off so I don’t think I really need to get into that lmao

Multisexual. Bi/pan/ply/whatever. A pretty person is a pretty person & all that.

I think he might see the idea of sexual orientation as a little silly or perhaps performative? He understands that he’s expected to only like women and knows that once he’s older he’ll be expected to marry one, to have children etc etc. So for the most part he keeps his attraction to men to himself (Ernst being a very obvious exception, likely not the only one but it’s not something he would ever reveal lightly) and he thinks that most people are doing the same in order to avoid being judged negatively by their community.

Something along the lines of “everyone is only acting like they’re exclusively attracted to the opposite sex because it’s what’s seen as normal. They don’t want everyone else to point fingers at them calling them sinners and sexual deviants and condemning them to hell so they deny themselves half the beauty the world has to offer. For this same reason, they’re quick to attack anyone around them who might be revealed as queer. They’re so focused on keeping their own secret safe that they never realize everyone around them is keeping exactly the same one.”

His brain shuts down for a minute and then he realizes that yes, this is happening and oh dear god I need to get out of here. He tries (and fails) to give the impression that he is calm, cool, and collected but he’s doing pretty good for someone who is screaming internally as loudly as he is.

He just keeps going. He tries to act like everything is fine, to show that he’s strong. The second he’s alone he deflates. He’s depressed af but does everything he can to hide it.

What is there for him to be afraid of? He can worry about dying later.

It’s quite long so I’m inserting a read more thing

What is your idea of perfect happiness?: Just feeling comfortable with who I am in life. Being able to just lay down, relax and realize all the amazing things in my life and all the amazing things about life in general. To be able to feel real and soak things that I experience up. What is your greatest fear?: The physical embodiment of my greatest fear is a high school cafeteria. That is a place where I had so many panic attacks and it caused so many problems throughout my high school career. Just being in a place with so many people. So many loud noises. A place I can’t escape. Strikes fear into my heart. Also being in large groups where a person has the choice of what group to be a part of, where to sit. But also that it is expected that you do have a place. A group to sit with. But then me not having anywhere. No friends. Or even friends, but then me not feeling like I really fir it. That they even like me. Is also so terrible. Another one of my fears is that I will be sick forever. Which means having a chronic illness absolutely sucks for me. The thought that I will have to deal with this pain and the feeling of exhaustion for the rest of my life. Also that I will never be able to contribute to society. To help others. Or even being able to do the things that I love and also going through phases where I can’t not only do those things but that I don’t want to do those things. Those things that are so much a part of me just disappearing and meaning nothing. I hate it and I am afraid. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?: My sicknesses. Its just the worst thing ever. What is the trait you most deplore in others?: That some people seemingly lack the basic ability to see others as human and treat them such. That people can be so cruel to others just because they are different. Which living person do you most admire?: dodie because I can just relate to her so much. And also that she is so beautiful and so talented. That she works so hard and loves all the friends and family in her life, I admire that about her. Also that she is an open bisexual feminist breaking down the stigma or mental illness is amazing. So I admire her for those things. What is your greatest extravagance?: Cute clothes. But also just days where I use my energy to do things like go on a bike ride or simply to the grocery store. What is your current state of mind?: I’m a little out of it at the moment. But hopeful and also happy cause I’m dying my hair today. What do you consider the most overrated virtue?: I’m not so sure cause all the ones I can think about can be really good if used in the right way. But probably chastity or purity because if people force that onto you it’s not too good. Like especially in the sense of teaching no sex before marriage. There’s nothing wrong in wanting to choose that for yourself or teaching that it is an option. But when parents and churches and especially schools teach that as the only option it gets dangerous. It makes people feel bad for having those feelings. Or having sexual experiences. And if you don’t teach proper sex education people can get stds, get pregnant and just overall not be knowledgeable about an important aspect of many peoples lives. On what occasion do you lie?: I don’t like this about myself, and have gotten better, but if I feel like I’m going to get in trouble I lie to get out of it. Even if I didn’t do anything wrong, I will lie. And that’s so stupid of me. But I just hate the feeling of getting in trouble so much. What do you most dislike about your appearance?: It’s kinda silly but my neck and shoulders. Also my boobs, not even in a dysphoric way. But I just don’t like the way they look and want them to be smaller. Which living person do you most despise?: Any person that’s in a high position of power that abuses that power and actively tries to hurt others and take away their freedoms. This includes trump and pence. What is the quality you most like in a man?: Just if they are nice and understanding. If they are interesting to talk to. If they strive for equality of minorities. Then I will be their friend. I’m mostly gay so I probably wouldn’t date any guy even if they do fit this criteria. What is the quality you most like in a woman?: All the same qualities mentioned above. And for qualities I look for in a woman to potentially date they also have to be sensitive and I have to find them attractive, which isn’t hard cause I find like 90% of women attractive physically. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?: “I don’t feel good” of “I’m tired” I say these so much that it annoys everyone in my family. But it annoys me most cause I’m the one that actually is feeling those things all the flippin time. What or who is the greatest love of your life?: My little sister, my cats and my computer (it doesn’t have to be this specific computer that I own now but any computer that I can have to myself) When and where were you happiest?: Probably all the years I spent in elementary school cause once I got into 6th grade my whole life kinda changed and I began all my lovely mental illnesses. I had my best friend back then, I loved school, I had other friends as well and I just had that childhood wonder where I didn’t know of all the bad things in the world. Which talent would you most like to have?: I would like to be a good artist or a good writer.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?: To not be freakin sick! Both mentally and physically please. What do you consider your greatest achievement?: Still being alive and stopping some of the more bad behaviors I had such as self harm and an eating disorder. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?: A plant. I’m not sure what type but I would like to be a plant. I love them so much, they’re beautiful and bring life into the world. Also I would like to not have to think. Where would you most like to live?: I would love to live in so many places. Maybe in Organ or Washington or in London. I’ve been to those places and I just feel more alive there and I love those places to death. What is your most treasured possession?: My computer, just case it allows me to access the internet and such. Or my stuffed moose because I’ve had that thing for such a long time and I still sleep with her. What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?: Being alone in a crowed room especially if you are “with” someone in that room. What is your favourite occupation?: I’ve never had a job. But my dream job would be a writer or a psychologist. One that helps the world learn new things about people or helps even just one mere person overcome their illness and be healthy and happy. What is your most marked characteristic?: Is this asking what my most prominent characteristic is? Then tiredness and sensitivity or empathy. What do you most value in your friends?: Honestly I don’t have many friends and the ones I do have are all online. But I guess people that fit into the qualities I listed in what I look for in men and women. But also the ability to discuss things. To ask questions and have a conversation or a civil argument.

Who are your favourite writers (musicians, artists, poets etc)?: Twenty One Pilots, Troye Sivan, Ellen Hopkins, Lulu Rose and Rebecca Sugar Who is your hero of fiction?: I don’t think I have one tbh. I rarely ever look up to real life people let alone fictional characters. But right now I’m really into Steven Universe and all of the crystal gems have some really great qualities that I strive to have. And my favorite character in the show is Connie so maybe her.

okay i’m totally off base probably but like okay here’s the thing i got one and a half episodes into terrace house

it is INTOLERABLE for me

1. i can’t stand secondhand embarrassment 2. I CAN’T STAND HETEROSEXUALS 3. i can’t stand heterosexuals NEVER SHUTTING UP ABOUT BEING HETEROSEXUAL 4. i literally do not care about shipping straight people at all 5. i therefore cannot power through all of this bullshit to get to the parts that i would enjoy

so my thoughts on the first episode are as follows

literally don’t care about anything but uchi/tatsuya reads as potentially closeted for me and that bothers me because, thanks to griffin and rachel and rose buddies (and my own curiosity) i know a lot of what happens with him

he ends up dating one of the girls, they have shitty communication issues, and ate some point he must leave and they presumably do not stay together at all

okay let me just

he is a hairdresser. absolutely 100% straight men can be hairdressers.

he also took up making his own clothing as a hobby. same thing as above.

he has an earring in only his left ear. ...//shrug.

he has the posture of someone constantly hiding something or being insecure.

he, according to the panel on the show, is perfect in every way (by being good with hair and clothes, which is attractive for a woman i guess) except that “he has a high voice” which would apparently get him teased/harassed, and might be unappealing. ...ahem.

similarly, he’s at the house with only two other people, and he goes to take a shower. the girl calls him...peculiar. then jokingly accuses him (when he’s taken a long time taking a shower and they’re wondering where he is) of “going like this” and then proceeds to fix her hair obsessively. ...AHEM.

upon sitting down to dinner with everyone, they start talking about dating and whatever (because apparently that’s just one of the given main goals of the show, and i had no idea--if there was less focus on dating i’d be more interested tbh) and they turn to him and he says he’s absolutely only here because he wants to meet a girl.

which sparks a conversation in which he immediately turns the tables to this other girl who’d asked him about it, and he says, ‘just out of casual curiosity, what’s your type?’ so she starts describing her preferred type of guy.

conversation moves away from him. another girl answers the question. she likes tall guys. someone points out that uchi is tall. he looks vaguely uncomfortable.

eventually the first girl (who’d called him peculiar and made fun of him with his hair, and who he’d first asked what her type was) turns to him and says “you never told us, did you? what your type is?”

and he pauses for a longass time and then says..... “cute. cute is my type. that’s boring isn’t it?”

and then everyone at the table kind of just decides around that moment that they all want more food and reach for it, and, made uncomfortable by this, he jokingly points it out and says they all lost interest in him and were more concerned with food than his answer.

which seems like a really awkward and pointless thing that i’ve done on multiple occasions when talking about this kind of shit. HM.

he’s also the first one to suggest (i think?) that the women in the house should do the cooking. ??????? which was just so blatantly misogynistic and WEIRD considering HE’S A FUCKING HAIRDRESSER AND SEAMSTER LIKE WHAT THE FUCK???? yeah sure dude i totally buy that you believe that.

later that night when hanging out with the other two guys, they’re talking about the girls (of course) and they’re questioning him, pointing out that he’d asked that one girl what HER type was, and they were like ‘yeah you were obvious, dude, you’re clearly into her.’

and he says, ‘no actually i’d go for [this other girl].’

and the guys are like ohh really?

and he says yeah, the older mature one.

i.e., the one least likely to be interested in him, with which he shares the least in common, and the one mostly unattainable because she is professional, older, and has lofty ambitions.

then in the second episode they show him at his job cutting hair, and he’s talking to his coworkers and they’re talking about the girls OF COURSE and he says basically like, yes he’s already interested in someone, yes based purely off looks. and the women say something like well hopefully he gets her attention or something.

and he says hopefully i get all of their attention, i’m greedy/awesome/something to that effect.

and at work, he Looked Straight for a while there because he was hanging out against a wall and wearing a snapback that removed his hair, and he looked kind of bro-ish in an almost offensive way.

and then after the transition, he looked way less like that for some reason.

and basically my point is i’m Not About This Bullshit.

apparently he’s the one involved with The Meat Incident that happens maybe 7 episodes in.

a really special client shipped him this incredibly fancy and delicate meat from across the country as a gift for him, and he put it in the fridge. at this point, he’s dating one of the girls, minori i think, and they’re not communicating well or spending enough time together.

and so, clearly to be passive aggressive (because apparently that’s how they always are, according to griffin), she suggests that, in lieu of going to the store for food, they just cook up and eat the meat that uchi has sitting in the fridge.

he gets home, all the meat is gone, and he’s devastated.

it turns into a massive argument. he refuses to talk to minori for like, a few days at least. he doesn’t hang out with anyone.

and eventually she goes to see him in his room and tries talking, and he ends up under the covers, hiding completely, and just crying, and he starts going on about all of the things wrong in the relationship and how he’s worried about them and he feels like they’re not connecting anymore or something.

take away being, of course it wasn’t just the meat. they’re real fucking people etc etc etc.

and that’s what has the mcelroys all ~this show is amazing~ about terrace house

like, i get it, on some level

but also

he’s sobbing under a blanket and apparently reaches out a single hand for minori to take to like, seek comfort

and it’s just like

........no, this dude is very closeted. in all fairness i don’t know him, i’m working with what i’m given on a show in japanese, i DO NOT know cultural norms or standards.

all i know are the universal signs of Awkward Around Heterosexuality And Other Related Topics.

i know very little about context, about assumptions on masculinity and gender roles (but again, very confusing when this dude wears jewelry, is tall and thin, cuts hair for a living, and makes his own clothing for a hobby--and yet for some reason suggests women should be the cooks, something not even the baseball jock or the tap dancer [both clearly straight] totally endorse right away, there’s some awkward talking around it while they figure it out).

so all of this is westernized bullshit conjecture

which is mostly me just rambling about this pattern i saw in the very first two episodes

which is ON TOP of everything i already hate about the show

this, as a beginning for the show? makes me deeply uncomfortable.

they tease him for his high voice, they insinuate that he’s the perfect man for women because he does those “feminine” things (flashback to freshman year of high school when a fellow student said to my gay drama teacher that his ability to sew/work with costumes would “make him a really great husband to some woman”--like jk, he ended up marrying a dude and taking his name, but whatever. fuck off.), he overplays the misogynistic hetero dude thing but to an unrealistic/not natural degree (the other two guys, in ep two, start talking about tits and asses--which is when i Stopped Watching--but uchi only ever talks in the abstract), and he’s...so torn up about the whole meat thing and the failing of this relationship.

it seems very much like a “FUCK this isn’t working oh god i’m not straight am i NO I HAVE TO MAKE THIS WORK FUUUUUCK” kind of reaction, tbh.

i’m not saying ~straight men don’t cry~ or ~straight men can’t do feminine things~ or ANYTHING LIKE THAT

i am saying there are a lot of small things that pile up and give me that vibe

and i could be TOTALLY OFF BASE because hello different cultural contexts and language barriers etc

but it’s just a vibe

and all of that on top of how much i hate the show for what it REALLY IS, it’s just like. yeah, i cannot continue to watch this.

sorry mcelroys, but you have failed me this time.

it’s okay, though. y’all love reality tv way more than me, and you’re presumably all heterosexual so like. //shrug. i get it.
