maniacally consuming every bit of tsitp since the show came out has made me realize how disappointing tatbilb was in comparison. sure i was excited but i didn’t feel This way. the way the books made me feel. this series might have to be my favorite book adaptation i just feel like it got everything right that it needed to. it’s not perfect but it’s so so good and i just wish we got something like this with tatbilb. with the same amount of time to explore the characters and actually flesh out the plot. cause tbf the whole story kinda got bungled in the movies. it wasn’t Bad by any means, but i think the song girls deserve just as much as the fisher boys

To All the Wizards I've Loved Before: Chapter 3 — Dramione fanfic on AO3
💌🦉📬💕🪄
Chapter 3 of TATWILB, a Dramione Eighth Year adaptation of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, is now live on AO3!
Tumblr media
It’s been so interesting to disentangle the HP vs. TATBILB characters... Hermione from Lara Jean and Draco from Peter—two sets of characters so deeply conditioned by different forms of losses. Narcissa from Mrs. Kavinsky—two women forced to pick up the pieces the men they loved left behind. I hope I’m doing them all justice.
And, let's say it together: Oh, Ron, our sweet summer child. I always felt that Josh Sanderson deserved far more sympathy than he received.

This was posted earlier today. I have the updated article on my tumblr page. I think I’m ok with it if it happens. I think it heightens the emotions between Belly and Conrad. 🤔Thoughts?
Thank you so much (and shout out to the anons who sent me links. I'm gonna respond to all of y'all collectively with this one).
Honestly, at first my jaw was on the floor and I was just sitting there silently in shock. And I was kinda mad and upset. I just feel like they did this same exact thing with TATBILB and I just don't understand why she would spend so much time writing the characters a certain way and building such a beautiful little world with such respectful men and then changing such a big part of a characters beliefs and the way they were written. I know people are saying "JH is making it more sex positive and bringing the story into 2023" but tbh I don't think having a boundary and wanting to wait for the right moment (bc Belly DOES want to have sex (with both brothers at different points I'd argue) and she thinks about it in the books. she just wanted it to be special and the right moment). I don't think there's anything wrong with showing that and showing boys who respect the boundary and don't push it or force it. I think that is the most healthy thing you could show. Even though Jere has his flaws and gets annoyed about Belly not having sex with him, he doesn't really push her on it, he just respects the boundary and is silently mad about it. In hs my best friend had a boyfriend who was SUPER pushy, she was honest with him and kept telling him "no, i'm not ready yet" and he just kept pushing her about it, and eventually they broke up and she realized how awful that behavior (among other red flag behavior from him) was. I just feel like the message being sent to young girls today is not a good one and I was actually kind of excited to see a show that would portray sex in a different light. I clowned myself because I thought since JH is the showrunner, she'd keep the important things from the books. But I guess this is a battle we are losing lol. That Christmas scene was so so good in the book, and the way Conrad is with Belly, how he recognizes the importance and wants it to be special for her...I was really looking forward to that.
After much consideration, I think I'm actually okay with it, as long as it's Conrad. And I have a feeling it is going to be Conrad, in Cousins in December. That's kind of the only way it would make sense is if it happens there. Also the fact that they bring up the fact that she loses her virginity immediately following "Tung...wanted to ensure that key moments from the second book...carried the same weight and resonance when adapted for the screen". The first thing that popped into my head after I read that was the Christmas in Cousins scene, because I felt like that whole thing resonated heavily in the book and it was really important. Also if I'm right and it is Conrad in Cousins, it actually adds more flames to the fire and more angst to the 3rd book storyline, because if she doesn't sleep with Jere but he finds out somehow that she did sleep with Conrad, and then finds out she ended up alone with him in Cousins again and didn't tell him? Oh that will be GOLD. Jere sleeping with the sorority sister could still carry the same amount weight. Just because the audience knows she lost her virginity to Conrad doesn't mean any of the other characters are going to know. And Conrad strikes me as a guy who wouldn't kiss and tell (and especially his own jealous little brother and Belly's older brother lol). I think they could 100% pull off the rest of the plot and still have her give herself fully to Conrad. But I can see the secret coming out to Jeremiah in the heat of an argument and all hell breaking loose. I think it'll be fine. It has to be lol
also who's idea was it to drop this spoiler-ish bomb on us two days before the start of the season?? I just wanna talk

I know you enjoy reading and was just wondering what your favorite book adaption is (movie or series)? Do you have any that you'd like to see adapted on the big screen in the future?
I’ve really loved the adaptations of Harry Potter, THG, and both of Jenny Hans projects (tsitp and tatbilb). I also really enjoyed shadow and bone S1 in particular. S2 was still good because of the cast, but it did veer from the books in areas that were definitely making cracks.
More than anything, I really want SJM’s stuff adapted! I hope the acotar tv show ends up finally moving forward, although I think TOG would be easier to adapt. I love acotar and think it has potential to be amazing, but there is also much more room for cringe bordering on goofy in acotar. They’ll have to be more careful.
I’ve seen that fourth wing has been optioned for a potential tv show, and while I don’t think it’s as good as SJM’s work, I think it has potential to be a great show. And also easier to avoid cringe in adapting although I know the budget would be crazy in order to get all the dragons they’d need.
I also think better than the movies by Lynn Painter would make an ADORABLE romcom and that needs to happen immediately!

hey Liv! so I had sent you the first ask about The Summer I Turned Pretty - and I'm so glad to see a few other people join in on the convo! though I have to say I disagree and prefer TSIP over TATBILB, both in books and in the screen adaptations. so, the lead female in TSITP is 15yo and turns 16 on the show, and the brothers in the love triangle are about 16 and 17 each. so they are young and sure we're not the intended audience but I guess just something to keep in mind for when you watch it. I finished the show in two days and honestly, it might be one of the best book to screen adaptations I've ever seen, and it really helped that the author was able to be so hands on. sure, they made some changes but really only 2 things had me "scratching my head" so to speak, otherwise I didn't mind the changes. personally, I recommend watching the show first and then reading the books. Book 1 is the primary focus but there are some elements from Book 2 and even 3 that are incorporated. plus, it's already been renewed for a season 2! which will now be a loooong agonizing wait, lol.
i didnt even know there was a love triangle, i know nothing about this other than the name of it lol thanks for the info! it sounds cute :)

What else are you thinking about cutting out from the bottoms to fit the fic?
hm im not sure, i feel like the issue w/adapting tatbilb is that i need to rework a lot of things. i dont know if the "thinking josie and PJ were in juvie" aspect will fit if i keep it like, pure fluff-fic. on the other hand, i could probably throw it in there if i want to have a little angst (as a treat). ill see how it feels once i start writing ig....

hi baby, thanks for the ask! my fav location has to be the summer house, it's so beautiful!! and yes, i've read the books. i bought the box a long time ago, just when the tatbilb movie got announced, and then i never read it because everyone told it wasnt as good as tatbilb (i love tatbilb SO much, i've read it in 2014!!) so i kept it on my shelf, delaying it. then at the beginning of the pand*mic i pick it up to read and finished the series in like 3 days. i liked the first one enough (4 stars) but the second and specially the 3rd one oh my, i couldn't believe what the hell was going on and god i hated every decision belly made alskdj (also, i was 22 at the time and wasnt into YA anymore and thought everything was very immature so yeah, it was my experience and i wasnt the targeted audience). two weeks before the premiere i read it the 1st book again, cause i'm that annoying little shit that likes to compare the book and the adaptation asdhj i love Jenny's style of writing and composition so much <3

Shadow & Bone is one of the best book to screen adaptations I’ve seen! Along with THG and TATB. I absolutely loved everyone casted and felt they really embodied their characters. I’m so happy 😭 can’t wait for season 2!

Is this unpopular..i thought the show was much better than the books. I watched the show and than read the books and was kind of surprised at how much i didn’t like the books. It had the same feel but i felt the show was done much better. They improved almost every character and made everything feel cohesive. The books are just not well written imo. No disrespect to Jenny han. I love her and really like the tatbilb series and feel she’s the main reason the tsitp tv series is so well done.
I totally respect this opinion. I feel like everyone is different when it comes to books vs screen adaptations and that's totally fine. I really liked the show and most of the changes. I loved the way you got to see the characters POVs better in the show which is a really cool think about screen adaptations. I liked that we got to see more of Steven and I liked what they did with Taylor's character. I thought it was for the most part extremely similar to the books, like it felt like I was watching the book just chapters that weren't included in it if that makes sense. I think the show did some things better and the book did some things better. I still prefer the books though, but I could possibly change my mind when the whole show is out lol but probably not?? idk.
I agree to a certain extent with you on the quality of the books. There were things about the 1st that I thought could have been done better, but overall it was pretty good. I've def read way worse writing though. I thought the 2nd book was much better and the 3rd book the best of the three (from a writing standpoint). It's important to remember that TSITP is her first published book, and I felt like you could kind of see the progression and improvement of her writing between the three books, they weren't bad to me but the fact that it's her first books shows. And TATBILB is her second trilogy, so I think it was just done better because she had more experience and expertise at that point if that makes sense. Also, I read an article a few weeks ago where she said that at first she didn't intend for tsitp to be a trilogy, it was originally going to be a one off. So idk if that played a role in the execution or not. I'm glad she waited so long to do the show tho bc it gave her so long to think about how she wanted to do it and to figure out what could have been executed/done better and fix that for the show.
a random but related fun fact about me- I read TATBILB first and loved it and Jenny Han's writing which is what made me read TSITP (as soon as i read the synopsis I was like "oh i'm gonna love this") and I found that I actually liked TSITP more. I love both trilogies though

It's so funny - I actually ended up reading the third book of The Summer I Turned Pretty series first, because of a post I saw on tumblr in 2012. I think it took me reading all the way to the end to realize that is was the last book in a trilogy, lol, so of course I went back and read the first two and then a lot more things made sense. I was 22 then, back when tumblr was still a little bit popular, and I've still reread the series every so often. It’s so cool and also kinda crazy to see posts on my dash of the show now, in 2022. The Amazon series may be one of the best book to screen adaptations I've ever seen, and I'm so excited to see how they do with books 2 and 3 - especially when they play the older, college aged versions of the characters! Do you remember when you first read the books?
Oh that’s so cool! I love to see so many huge fans of the books so happy with the show. It’s also one of my all time favorite book to tv adaptations- honestly I PREFER the show.
I can’t imagine how confusing it must have been to read the last book first 😂 I also read them back when they first came out (I was like 13 or 14). I haven’t reread them since so it was really cool to see how hard I stuck with my initial ship convictions even though I didn’t remember a ton of the details. I have never really heard many people talk about these books until now, much more so tatbilb so it’s awesome.

did you ever read The Summer I Turned Pretty book trilogy? It's by the same author who wrote the To All The Boys I've Loved Before trilogy that was made into netflix movies. TSITP was just released as a series on Amazon Prime, and has already been renewed for a season 2. I've only just finished the first episode but as a HUGE fan of the books - it's really good so far! And so if you're not familiar with it, or even if you are, I think it's something you'd really enjoy!
i didnt! i knew the show was based on a book but i didnt realize it was a trilogy, or that it was the same author as the tatbilb books.
as someone who was a fan of the books, if you love the show so far im assuming they did a really good job with the adaptation? im watching a few things right now and dont have the time but ill be sure to check it out. thanks for the rec! <3

PSA for People who Haven’t Read TATBILB
Since everybody’s still raving about the TATBILB movie I just need to say.
PLEASE BUY, READ AND SUPPORT THE NOVELS. They are truly wonderful, the first book is better than the movie even though it was a great adaptation, Jenny Han deserves all this recognition right now and by supporting the other books along with watching the movie it gives us a greater chance of Netflix adapting the sequels.
THANKS FOR LISTENING.
