Friday morning Hermione was awoken by a tapping on her window. She walked over to see a large eagle owl sitting on the ledge. She opened her window to let it in. Hermione was grinning from ear to ear. She quickly scribbled her acceptance and sent Draco's owl back out the window. She tried to think about what to wear. It was the three broomsticks, so casual, but it was their first date, so she wanted to look nice. She didn't have much experience dressing for dates. She couldn't exactly wear her Yule ball dress as she had with Viktor. And she and Ron had mostly hung out at the Burrow or with Harry and Ginny at the Leaky. Hermione decided she'd just have to figure it out later and got ready for her day of classes.

As she walked across the grounds on her way to Herbology, Draco strode up next to her, his long legs catching up to her with ease.

"Hello Granger," he greeted her smoothly with his aristocratic drawl.

"Having a good morning?"

"Why yes I am. How about you?"

"Well let's see I'm walking to class next to you and I have a date with a very sexy witch tonight, so yes, I'd say today is going splendidly."

Hermione could help but smile at his shameless flirting.

"You know you could have just asked me out in person right?"

"Absolutely not." He looked appalled. "That's not how things are done. And to be clear, I intend to do this right."

Draco grabbed her hand and pulled her into him. "Hey, it's alright. I'm here."Hermione could feel herself vibrating with rage.

"I'm going to Apparate us back to the edge of the Hogwarts grounds now."

Hermione nodded that she was ready, and Draco could Apparate them without the risk of her Splinching.

Once they'd settled into their spot, sitting on Draco's transfigured handkerchief again, she turned to look at him.

Draco held up both hands in a display of innocence. "I've said nothing!"

"She just made me so mad! She has no idea how much that stupid paper has messed with my life. Molly Weasley still thinks Harry and I used to date. And the idea of using our relationships as newspaper fodder… it just cheapens everything we have."

Draco looked at her and smiled his gorgeous smile and Hermione felt her whole-body tingle in response. "What did I do to earn that look?" She asked.

"Did you mean what you said? That I can redeem the Malfoy name on my own?"

"Yes, absolutely. You are brilliant and hard-working, and you've totally rejected the prejudices of your past. I know the rest of the wizarding world will see that about you soon, just like I do."

"I've always loved seeing you all lit up with righteous fury but having that light turned on my mother in defense of me may be the most incredible honor of my life."

Hermione rolled her eyes. "I know I'm a lot but don't make fun.""I am fully serious Hermione. Having you speak up for me? Having all of the force of Hermione Granger fighting, in my defense instead of against me, was absolutely Earth-shattering."

It looked like a jagged piece of rock. The sharp edges hugged a fiery-red-colored stone within. “Pretty,” she said as he stepped closer to her. Hermione held her breath, her hand itching to grasp her wand. “It’s a botched Philosopher's Stone,” he explained as he brought his face close to hers. With his wand, he pointed at the stone. “See the black specs within? They’re quite small, but if you look closely, you can see them.” Hermione was about to turn blue from the lack of oxygen. “Yes, I see them,” she exhaled and finally took a breath. He was wearing cologne. Light enough not to overwhelm her sensitive sinuses as Ron’s usually would, but strong enough to catch the subtle bouquet of primrose and rye with a hint of vanilla that reminded her of a warm summer day. She panicked. Hermione stood so suddenly that she knocked into Draco’s shoulder, sending him stumbling back a bit. The stone clamored to the floor from the lack of magic to hold it in place. Embarrassed beyond belief, Hermione began to apologize and instinctively dove for it. Draco was quicker and he snatched her wrist before she could touch the stone. “Careful!” He yelled. Hermione instantly seized her wand and jammed it under his jaw as she gazed at his frightened face. They stared at one another almost nose to nose, truly looking into each other’s eyes for the first time in an age. Draco could see the mistrust, the hurt, the challenge in her eyes, while Hermione saw something akin to shame. He gulped loudly and slowly released his grip on her wrist. “Sorry,” he murmured softly.
